By Dan Marinelli LOS ANGELES – When a large-scale music festival like FYF Fest has one of its headliners cancel last minute, how do they recover? By calling Kanye West out from his Kardashian depths to drop an unforgettable, Yeezusdominant performance, in front of a sold-out crowd at Downtown Los Angeles’ Exposition Park this weekend.

The most glaring problem at last, year’s festival was the lack of layout organization. There was only one path from the entrance to the festival’s largest stage, which also happened to be obstructed by long food truck lines that created a big jam in the middle of the lone walkway.

FYF fixed the problem the following day, but this year’s organization was smoother than

a warm knife through butter.

There was an additional path to the main stage that created a much easier festival flow. Also, going from Bloc Party to Kanye West – the two most popular acts on Saturday night – would have been an utter nightmare without the added route.

If there was a theme throughout the festival, it was social media. Whether it was

Auditions on Saturday, August 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. are open to people of all experience levels. Actors of various ages are needed for the season’s lineup, which include The Full Monty, A Christmas

Story, Amadeus, and more.

Some specific roles the theatre’s directors are seeking include Billy Crocker in Anything Goes, Cliff Bradshaw in Cabaret, and Ariel Moore, the female lead in Footloose.

Performers are asked to be prepared with one up-tempo song and one down-tempo song. It is suggested that singers perform with pieces

that are appropriate for the shows they are interested in. A piano accompanist is available, but those auditioning may also bring their own music on CD or smartphone. Actors choosing to perform a monologue are asked to keep it under two minutes.

Kele Okereke, the lead singer of Bloc Party asked the crowd “Are you guys ready for Yeezy?” amid the bands’ performance. So he was obviously just as excited to get off the stage and go to West’s main stage closeout.

More than 2,000 stocks hit 52 week lows on Monday

By Desert Star Staff US stocks closed with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 588 points, recovering from the shocking plunge of 1,000 points at the opening bell on Monday. The S&P 500 was down over 77 points as the trading stopped on the busiest day of the year for investors.

Wall Street suffered one of the steepest falls in the last four years. The volatile session saw the main indexes plunge by 5 percent during the day before correcting and closing down nearly 4 percent. The Dow opened with a stomachchurning 1,000-point plunge following world market panic and the biggest Chinese stock slide since 2007.

More than 2,000 stocks hit new 52 week lows on Monday, according to the WSJ Market Data Group. Nasdaq saw Apple fall as low as $92. Giants such as Chevron, General Electric, Berkshire Hathaway and PepsiCo have seen their lowest

stock prices on the New York Stock Exchange in a year.

The Dow’s 588 points loss corresponded to a 3.6 percent decline while the S&P 500’s 77 points drop corresponds to a 3.9 percent loss. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day with a 3.8 percent drop, down nearly 180 points.

According to preliminary data from BATS Global Markets, the US equities market operator, nearly 1,300 trading halts were recorded on US exchanges on Monday.

Though the Dow percentage change may not be dramatic, the 588 point drop is the eighthbiggest intraday point decline in the Dow’s history while the 1,000-point decline at the open is the largest intraday point decline in history.

The US stock chaos followed the crash of the world markets on Monday, after the Shanghai composite closed down 8.5 percent. Asian markets followed China with a broad sell-off.

Europe mirrored the downtrend, with the STOXX Europe 600 Index dropping 5.3 percent – its worst percentage loss since 2008.

“The catalyst for recent declines in stock markets and

commodity prices is a downbeat reassessment of the global economic situation due to China’s recent currency devaluation. The Chinese move to peg the Yuan lower caught markets by surprise and has caused many analysts

to question whether China could meet its lofty economic growth forecasts,” Edward Harrison, banking and finance specialist at Global Macro Advisors, told RT.

Australian firefighters ‘happy to help’ in Northwest

Geranios BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The mountainous conditions in the Pacific Northwest will be nothing new to the dozens of firefighters from Australia and New Zealand who have arrived to help battle the many blazes burning unchecked in the region. “We’re used to tall timber and steep territory,� said Warren Heslip, a 47-year-old firefighter from Southland, New Zealand.

Heslip was among the 71 firefighters from the southern region picking up equipment Monday at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, before heading out to help a ground campaign led by firefighters from across the West and augmented by U.S. soldiers.

The flames that claimed the lives of three firefighters in Washington, injured four others and burned 200 homes also inspired an outpouring of volunteers who have been

invited for the first time in Washington state history to help battle the blazes.

This summer’s fire response across the West has been overwhelmed by destructive blazes tearing through the tinder-dry region.

The biggest fire burning Monday was in Washington’s Okanogan County on the Canadian border, where a group of five fires raging out of control became the largest in state history, scorching more than 400 square miles, fire spokesman Rick Isaacson said.

Lightning-sparked fires broke the state record, surpassing blazes that destroyed more than 300 homes in the same county last year. “I’d like to set some different records,� Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said.

The U.S. is in the midst of one of its worst fire seasons on record with some 11,600 square miles scorched so far.

It’s only the sixth-worst going

back to 1960, but it’s the most acreage burned by this date in a decade, so the ranking is sure to rise.

So many fires are burning in the state that managers are taking extreme measures, summoning help from abroad and 200 U.S. troops from a base in Tacoma in the first such

use of active-duty soldiers in nine years.

Jim Whittington, a Bureau of Land Management spokesman in Portland, Oregon, said military assets cannot be used against wildfires until all civilian resources are deployed.

Since 1987, active duty military personnel have been mobilized to serve as wildland firefighters a total of 35 times.

The last time was in 2006.

Since then, it has not been necessary to ask for military assistance until this fire season, Forest Service officials said.

Nearly 4,000 volunteers also answered the state’s call for help, far more than will be accepted, said state Department of Natural Resources spokesman Joe Smillie.

The state is looking for former firefighters or heavy equipment operators who can bulldoze fire lines to corral the blazes and keep them from spreading in mountainous, timber-covered areas. So far, about 200 people with the right experience have been cleared to work.

The dozens of firefighters from Australia and New Zealand who arrived at the National

Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, were being outfitted to fill a critical shortage of midlevel fire managers such as equipment bosses, strike team leaders and supervisors.

The Southern Hemisphere nations have been partners with the U.S. for more than 50 years, able to lend out firefighters because the severest part of their fire seasons occur at opposite times of the year. The last time the U.S. asked for their help was 2008, with 50 firefighters arriving. The U.S. sent firefighters abroad in 2007.

Costs for the international firefighters will be paid by the agency they’re assigned to, officials said, though no estimate was yet available.

Chris Arnol, international liaison for Australia and New Zealand firefighters, said at a news conference in Boise the firefighters were ready to assist. “We understand how tough it is for you guys and we’re happy to help,� he said.

Crying over spilled water: Raising twins during drought

By Gillian Flaccus LOS ANGELES (AP) - On a recent sweltering Saturday afternoon, I submerged my guilt and filled the bathtub halfway for my 3-year-old twins to play in.

It was their first bath in months. The early childhood rituals of spiky-haired tub photos and endless play in lukewarm bath water are foreign concepts to our two girls, who were born in 2011 at the beginning of an epic drought in California that shows no sign of abating.

I told them this was a treat an exception to the five-minute shower rule strictly enforced by my husband - and reveled in their delight as they pretended to be mermaids, floated and splashed each other with glee.

Then, my husband got home and they ratted me out.

“Daddy! Daddy!” one shouted. “Mommy says it’s a special day and we can play mermaids, but really she’s just wasting water and killing fish!”

I was about to remind her no one likes a tattle tale, but then I stopped.

After all, isn’t this the moment every parent of a toddler hopes for? The moment when your child projects beyond him or herself, when they understand their impact on the bigger world around them?

Ever since they could talk, my husband and I had harped,

hammered and cajoled them about the consequences of wasting water when there just wasn’t enough to go around.

And here it was, the lesson we had tried so hard to teach them sent back to us with surprising clarity and simplicity.

Really, it’s no surprise. Our daughters’ short lives have been shaped by water - or the lack of it - from potty-training to playtime to daily routines like brushing teeth.

They take great delight in yelling at us when we don’t let yellow mellow (they ALWAYS do) or when we dump a halfconsumed glass of drinking water down the drain.

After weeks spent trying to get my other daughter to turn off the faucet while brushing her teeth, I caught her one morning wiping a huge glob of neon-pink toothpaste off her brush with a tiny square of toilet paper.

When I chided her, she looked at me like I was crazy and said, “But Mommy, I don’t want to waste water. I don’t want Gov. Brown to yell at me!”

Cute quotes aside, California’s water shortage is tangible to them. They don’t have “water play” Fridays at preschool anymore. We let the pansies and geraniums we planted together in the spring wither and die. And we wash our cars so rarely that they

Of course, the drought’s impact on our daughters’ lives is inconsequential compared to California farmers who are losing a livelihood, the residents who have lost homes due to droughtfueled wildfires or to the millions of children worldwide who don’t have clean drinking water at all.

But that’s one reason that the drought’s impact here, superficial as it may seem, is critical to teaching a life lesson: The way you live touches the world.

Our water discussions about

the drought have spawned conversations about waste of all sorts, from using too much toilet paper (another favorite toddler topic) to how plants grow to where our food comes from. We aren’t preachy or ascetic. We’re just matter-of-fact - because they will likely grow old in a world that’s much hotter and much more crowded, where people compete for resources we now take for granted.

I grew up in an old farmhouse in central New York that had only a well for household use. I remember as a child sometimes going to the locker rooms at the school

where my mother taught to take showers toward the end of the summer, when the well ran dry, and filling gallon milk jugs to take home to flush toilets and brush teeth.

To this day, leaky faucets and running water get under my skin. I can’t rest until the tap is off.

I don’t know that our daughters will inherit such a mental tick. But I do hope that, as adults, they will remember being mermaids in a world that was much bigger than them.

Now celebrating 30 years of serving the community, it is the mission of UCPIE to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of individuals with disabilities. The afterschool programs provide care and activities for more than 70 Coachella Valley students with special needs.

“Ultimately, these services benefit the entire valley by helping create productive citizens who feel cared for and needed in their communities,” said Christopher McGuire, Vice President of Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation.

The UCPIE after-school programs help participants develop and improve in five vital skills areas: socialization, independence, communication, safety and health. This is accomplished through a structured curriculum of community outings, educational activities, recreation, games, adapted physical play,

safety training, and nutritious afterschool snacks.

“The families and students say they can’t wait to come back to the after-school programs. UCPIE offers a sense of community within our community,” said Mike Stutz, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates CBS Local 2.

A portion of the grant funding will also be used to support the organization’s adaptive sports and wellness program for about 100 children and young adults in the Coachella Valley. In addition to these services, the organization provides respite care to about 240 area families.

U.S. Failing Mothers in Paid Maternity Leave

By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas - The U.S. is dramatically behind the rest of the world in providing adequate support for mothers to spend time with their newborn babies, according to an investigative report by In These Times magazine.

Sharon Lerner, the report’s author, found most other countries; rich or poor, mandate paid maternity leave. Lerner says American moms frequently have to choose between bonding with newborns or paying the rent.

“Only 13 percent of women have access to any paid time off after they have children,” says Lerner. “That means 87 percent of American women don’t have paid leave. So what do they do when they have children?”

To find out, Ler ner spent months following challenges faced by four new mothers. Lerner says for Natasha Long in Mississippi, back to work three weeks after giving birth, the hardest

part was missed bonding time.

Long worked four to five 12hour shifts a week, developed symptoms of depression and was prescribed antidepressants.

Now three years old, Long’s child still refuses to call her mama.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than one in five of the nation’s top 10 percent of earners get paid family leave, compared to one in twenty earners in the bottom 25 percent.

Lerner points out in Sweden all mothers, regardless of income level, get 16 months paid leave.

In Finland, she says in addition to nine months paid maternity time the mother or father can continue to receive paid time off until the child’s third birthday.

Breastfeeding: Making It Work in the Workplace

By Desert Star Staff Breastfeeding benefits are vast, medical experts say, but it can be a real challenge for moms when they go back to work.

While about 70 percent of new Ohio moms start out breastfeeding, only about 40 percent still do so after six months, said lactation expert Dr. Ardythe Morrow, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Human Milk and Lactation and professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Returning to work often is cited as a reason, but Morrow noted that under the Affordable Care Act, employers are required to provide break time and a private environment for lactating mothers during the workday. “ T h e r e ’s s t i l l m a n y circumstances when moms find

it difficult,” she said, “but there’s been great strides in making rooms available to mothers who can pump and then store their milk so that someone else can feed their baby if they’re at work.”

August is National Breastfeeding Month.

Morrow said breast-fed babies have lower risk of pneumonia and ear infections, and a reduced risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies be exclusively breastfed for about the first six months of life.

Morrow said the medical community is working to build awareness of the need for employers to help new moms achieve their breastfeeding goals as they transition back to their jobs.

“Breastfeeding is something

that in some senses they say ‘takes a village,’ it takes support,” she said. “A breastfeeding mother needs the support of her husband, her family and other people to encourage and help her.”

Morrow noted that not all women choose to breastfeed, and others face such challenges as pain or low milk supply.

“For all areas of medical science, including lactation,” she said, “there are people doing research to understand what the problems are, and why some moms are struggling.”

She said there are resources to help new moms and encourages them to reach out to their pediatrician or a lactation consultant if they are having questions or difficulties.

Fairfield Inn Reconstruction Update

By KMIR News Staff PALM DESERT, Ca. - What was a “Fairfield Inn” in Palm Desert, was virtually destroyed in a massive four alarm fire in April of last year. For many months, valley residents have been wondering why it has taken so long for the hotel to be reconstructed.

According to the city of Palm Desert, plans for reconstruction have been in place since December. The owners of the hotel applied for remodel and upgrade in which the old Fairfield Inn changed to the Springhill Marriot back in December. The plan has gone through a couple of revisions, which is what has caused the delay, “since April it has been in the applicant’s hand since last week. We had corrections and unfortunately its been going back and forth,” City of Palm Desert Safety Supervisor Jason Finley said.

There is some concern about how long the reconstruction is taking to begin. The hotel burned many months ago, and there is still no indication of when it will reopen. The city wants to make sure the hotel meets all

Anti-Violence Vigil Looks to Gang-Suppression

By Desert Star Staff The community of San Bernardino came together Thursday night for a vigil to honor 4-year-old Daniel Munoz, who was shot to death in his aunt’s front yard in late July, the victim of random violence.

The San Bernardino Police Department is looking to make a difference by establishing a program called Operation Ceasefire, which combines heavy enforcement with preventive social

services. Rally organizer Sergio Luna with Inland Congregations United for Change said the city needs to do more even as it emerges from bankruptcy.

“The key components to keep people out of the cycle of violence are still missing,” she said. “We need job training, housing and opportunities for youth.”

Homicides in San Bernardino skyrocketed in recent years but are down dramatically so far in

2015 - something the police department credits to better community outreach.

If Operation Ceasefire is implemented, said police Lt. Rich Lawhead, it would train recent parolees to intervene after a shooting and use their street cred to calm the situation.

“They communicate: ‘Hey, you know, don’t go out and retaliate on this. Let the police do their job’,” he said. “We need to get some of our youngsters to

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – Activists are protesting tax breaks for the $3 billion private prison industry - which runs 16 facilities in California. They protested at an industry conference in New York last week about a loophole that lets private prison companies claim to be in the real estate business and thus pay less income tax.

Ian Trupin, an organizer for the Responsible Endowments Coalition, said California is at the forefront of the move toward private prisons.

“After the federal government,” he said, “California is the largest customer of the private prison industry in the United States.”

In 2013, a federal judge ordered California to fix overcrowding in its prisons which led to the practice of sending prisoners to private facilities. Corrections Corporation of America and the Geo Group, the two biggest private prison firms, say they’re providing a public service.

Opponents such as Trupin say the firms make financial

donations to lawmakers who support anti-crime laws - laws that swell the prison ranks.

“We need to really make this issue something toxic for politicians,” Trupin said, “so they have to stop taking money from private prisons and stop passing the laws that this lobby is really going for.”

Activists currently are running campaigns to press the University of California System and the County of Los Angeles to divest their holdings in private prison companies.

Operation Ceasefire has successfully reduced violence in dozens of cities across the country including Boston and Chicago.

Palm Springs walk of stars honors “Gypsy”

By Pamela Price Sixty years in show business was recognized for James “Gypsy “Haake, who celebrated his Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on the morning of August 24 in front of Oscars Café and Bar in Palm Springs.

It was a weekend honoring Gypsy, the iconic 83-year-old performer, who has captivated audiences from New York to Los Angeles since 1951.

According to Gypsy’s biography, Mel Brooks discovered Gypsy, casting him in as Sasha in the film “To Be or Not to Be” (1983), launching his film and television career. The star inductee mingled with friends and fans during several events, which included a Red Carpet reception at the Hard-Rock Hotel in Palm Springs followed by a dinner attended by over 250 guests such as Margaret O’Brien, Ruta Lee, Lainie Kazan, Connie Stevens, Carol Channing and Sean Kanan.

The next morning at 9am, Gypsy’s Star was official, as it was unveiled in front of Oscar’s Café and Bar. Gypsy’s special talent is celebrity impersonations.

“Gypsy is unique and innovative; he has his own style and a marvelous wardrobe,” says Grace Robbins, author of autobiographical book, Cinderella and the Carpetbagger. The book reveals her legendary celebrity lifestyle during the 1970s and 1980s, while Gypsy’s career was a living legend.

“I remember him well from ”La Cage Aux Follies” on La

Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles,” she reminisced with a big smile. “There was always a waiting list for seating as he was popular with tourists as well as locals.” The production closed in 1993 after a successful 13-year run but Gypsy’s career continued as he performed throughout the world.

As far as Gypsy’s outrageously flamboyant wardrobe, he quips, “There no gold lame for me during the daytime, it gives me heartburn!” The success of Gypsy’s debut in Palm Springs began at a fundraiser held at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs on April 1, raising half of the $10,000 required to fund his Star on the Walk of Stars. Supporters worked tirelessly to dedicate his Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

Honoring the oldest working ‘female impersonator in the world’ according to KESQ CBS Local 2 has made Gypsy a local legend as well. “ All I can feel is gratitude” he says.

T R AV E L Ireland Vacations For The Super Rich & Famous

Day 5: The official press trip had come to an end and the journalists invited on this extraordinary adventure all went their separate ways. Some headed for home, while others chose to do some exploring on their own. As for me, just when I thought I had experienced the height of luxury visiting some of the exclusive castles in Northern Ireland, a “gilding the lily” experience awaited me in my private, escorted visit to the Republic of Ireland.

My guide on the last leg of my trip to Ireland was to be Siobhan Byrne Learat, a whirlwind of a woman who is founder & CEO of Adams & Butler, a travel agency specializing in high-end luxury tours. A most personable Siobhan drove up from Dublin to fetch me at the Malmaison Hotel in Belfast. Soon I was to experience luxury as only kings, queens, and the super wealthy do.

Following a very pleasant drive from Belfast to Dublin, our first visit on this luxury exploration was to Ballyfin, one of the two high-end venues in which I would be spending a night. It is a gorgeous, 5-star property, with sprawling gardens and waterways.

My host was Jim Reynolds, Director of Ballyfin and the designer of Prince Charles’ garden at Highgrove. He also wrote a garden column for the Irish Times and is a fountain of information on subjects ranging from gardens to architecture.

While sipping a cup of delicious chamomile tea, I interviewed Mr. Reynolds in the light-drenched enclosed patio, and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

creation of Ballyfin from the beginning. I helped Fred Krehbiel, a Chicago industrialist, in his search for an old house that needed care and could become a small hotel. We looked for two years.

I heard about Ballyfin, which was a boys’ school since the 1920s. It was now a co-ed day school with over 500 pupils. It was in a pretty poor state in every respect – the house, the gardens, the grounds, the lake, and the woodlands. Everything was suffering from neglect.

We eventually met with the chairman of the trustees of the school.

What happened at that meeting?

Well, at first he said Ballyfin was not for sale, but that he prayed that a wealthy Japanese businessman would come along and buy it and turn it into a golf course. I said, ‘You mean it’s possibly for sale?’ He said that the school no longer served its original purpose and that all six trustees would have to agree to the sale.

Obviously, the sale went through. What was the process of restoring the building and grounds and how many people were involved?

It continued to be a school in 2009. During that time, I put the design team together and was on site generally three or four days a week. We had a very clear idea of what we wanted and knew it was going to be costly, which we would finance ourselves. It was a very slow process using English and Irish stonemasons. At any given time, there may have been 50 people on site. FILM ‘Woman In Gold’—A Powerful True Story

The film begins in Klimt’s studio as he applies the gold leaf to Adele’s gown. Are they lovers?

Soul-mates or just intellectual friends? Their relationship is not spelled out as the story inter-cuts between past and present. Adele and Ferdinand share their home with his brother Gustav and her sister Therese and their children.

This was a perfect arrangement since Adele was unable to have children of her own. She was especially close to her niece, Maria and on Maria’s wedding day, she gives her the beautiful diamond choker she wore when she posed for her gilded portrait.

Eventually the necklace, like the priceless work of art, was stolen by the Nazis.

When, as a gesture of reparation, the German and Austrian governments offer to return valuable art works to their rightful Jewish owners, Maria sets out to regain the portrait of her beloved aunt with the help of attorney Randol Schoenberg, the son of Maria’s friend. Now in her 80’s Maria wants to be reunited with the portrait of her adored aunt, but restitution may prove to be impossible since the painting is considered an Austrian treasure.

Screenwriter Alex Kaye Campbell and director Simon Curtis paint a vivid cinematic portrait of their own as they allow the audience to get to know Adele and her young niece Maria in moving, well-positioned flashbacks, which make it clear why the elder Maria (Mirren) is reluctant to go back to Austria personally to fight for her family

treasures. Tatiana Maslany plays Maria as a young woman and Max Irons is her young husband, an opera singer. The memories of their escape from Nazi occupied Austria still haunts Maria to the present day. As much as Maria once loved Austria, it is difficult for her to forgive and forget the past persecution.

Her flashback farewell to her parents is particularly heartwrenching. She doesn’t want to leave them, but they encourage her to escape and make a new life with her young husband in America. Her father’s final words to her were “....we worked hard and did everything to belong.

Woman in Gold by Gustav Klimt Adele Bloch-Bauer may not be a familiar name, and yet if you are an aficionado of Gustav Klimt’s sensuous, luminous portraits you are familiar with her exquisite face. In fact, her portrait is the Austrian equivalent of the Mona Lisa. It was commissioned by her adoring husband, Ferdinand in the early 1900s and when it was unveiled in 1907 it both captivated and offended Viennese society. During World War II the Nazis confiscated the portrait along with other Klimt paintings owned by the BlochBauer estate.

In 1943 the Nazis staged a large Klimt exhibition in Vienna, concealing the identities of the Jewish women who posed for

the artist. Adele’s portrait was identified simply as “Lady in Gold” and at this point became the possession of the National Gallery in Austria. Ferdinand’s gift to his wife was no small investment. At the time, the cost of the portrait was equal to one-fourth the value of a wellappointed, well furnished country villa. Today the painting is worth $135 million.

Mirren, as the elder Maria, is feisty, but also hesitant to return to her former homeland, which treated her and her family and friends with such hatred and disregard. Reynolds is equally compelling as her young lawyer who learns to care for her, even when she gives him a hard time.

Their fight becomes a personal crusade, not only for him and his client but for everyone who lost so much during the Holocaust.

Others in the cast include Katie Holmes as Schoenberg’s wife, Jonathan Pryce and Daniel Bruehl as the young Austrian journalist who assists Schoenberg in his search for restitution and justice.

The film is rated PG-13.

Then Finally, Morrissey capped the night with an emotional and political set that left most of the crowd thankful they could see the Brit while he was here.

Overall, the festival was an utter success. From the outstanding musical lineup, to the gourmet food, to the chic décor throughout Exposition Park, the relatively short lines, the lack of a corporate feel, the abundance of positive vibes and numerous surprises, FYF Fest was definitely one of the best music festivals of the summer.

MUSIC New releases: Textones, Black Veil Brides, Boomtown Rats

Terrific reissues of the Textones’ first two albums, the first-ever DVD release from Black Veil Brides and an early 1978 concert performance featuring the Boomtown Rats are all worth exploring.

Artist: The Textones Titles: Midnight Mission, Cedar Creek (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Lone Justice, Carla Olson, Tom Petty Tell me more: The Textones’ 1984 debut “Midnight Mission” and 1987 follow-up “Cedar Creek” were not only terrific albums, but showcased the talents of a band that was a generation ahead of its time via a mix of guitar-anchored New Wave and what would someday be known as Americana.

Recalling most closely the rollicking sound of early Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Textones featured lead singer/ guitarist Carla Olson, guitarist

George Callins, bassist Joe Read, multi-instrumentalist Tom Junior Morgan and drummer Phil Seymour (later replaced

by Rick Hemmert). “Midnight Mission” features a number of excellent songs, including the high-energy “Hands of the Working Man” and “No Love In You,” along with the lovely countrified “Number One Is to Survive.” “Cedar Creek” is an equal joy. The spirited leadoff track “Not Afraid,” rousing “Gotta Get You Back” and Rolling Stones-styled “You Can Run” are balanced by tracks such as the mid tempo “Another Soul Searcher” (bolstered by Olson’s slide guitar work), pianoanchored ballad “Austin” and textured “We Can Laugh About It” fully displaying the richness of the band’s rootsy rock approach.

The reissue of “Midnight Mission” includes five bonus tracks, while “Cedar

Top Kirtan Stars converge for Bhakti Fest

By Jackie Devereaux (Joshua Tree, CA) – Bhakti Fest, a sacred music and yoga festival, will be returning to the Joshua Tree Retreat Center Sept. 9-14 with a lineup of Kirtan musicians, master yoga instructors, and spiritual teachers and explorers from around the world.

Theater shooting victims speak freely at gunman’s sentencing

By Sadie Gurman Associated Press CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - Scores of victims of James Holmes’ deadly attack on a Colorado movie theater, now free to vent their feelings before the judge, are denouncing the defense team, the legal process and the single juror who blocked a death sentence.

Throughout Holmes’ three-month trial, if they were called to testify, survivors and family members were stifled by objections and court orders preventing them from veering off topic or saying too much about the searing emotional and physical scars the shooting has left.

But they were finally allowed to speak without interruption when Holmes’ formal sentencing opened Monday, offering testimony that was sometimes quiet and reflective, sometimes laced with anger and frustration.

Tom Teves, whose son Alex was killed, called Holmes a pathetic coward and the defense attorneys “agents of evil” who were trying to advance their own careers.

Robert Sullivan, the

grandfather of the youngest victim, 6-year-old Veronica MoserSullivan, called on Holmes to “do the correct thing for once” and petition the court to be executed by firing squad.

Unlike during the trial, witnesses spoke from a lectern facing Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr., rather than the jury box, which sat empty. Their voices were tearful and trembling.

At the end of the three-day hearing, Samour will formally sentence Holmes to life without parole and up to 3,318 additional years on attempted murder convictions. Forty more people are expected to take the stand Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jurors rejected Holmes’ insanity plea and convicted him of murdering 12 people and trying to kill 70 others when he opened fire on a packed theater in suburban Denver on July 20, 2012. The jury was divided on the sentence, with 11 favoring death and one favoring life without parole. Under Colorado law, jurors must be unanimous to impose the death penalty, so Holmes automatically got life.

Samour said he understood the victims are hurting, but he said speculating on misconduct was unacceptable. “I don’t have any basis in front of me or any reason anyone has put in front of me (to conclude) there was deception,” he said.

These last experiences were not quite the end of my Irish adventure, so for those of you who ever wondered what it was like being raised as a royal, stay turned for an exclusive interview with Brendan Parsons, the Seventh Earl of Rosse.

Old Globe Theatre presents a dazzling comedy gem

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Shakespeare’s classic comedy tale of mistaken identity - long a staple arrow in the quiver of Playwrights ranging from Greeks and Romans to no less a savvy pilferer of stories and plots, than the Bard himself is playfully, zanily, and brilliantly staged, in the Outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, by eight time-Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis, along with an inspired cast and ensemble.

The venerable Old Globe Theatre, in Balboa Park, is celebrating its 80 birthday. And what a celebration party they’ve been serving up to their many loyal patrons. The eclectic season of plays selected for the year-long 80th celebration by Artistic Director Barry Edelstein has been a series of winners for San Diego audiences and all true patrons of the arts.

production of ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ to “Murder for Two”, “The Twenty-Seventh Man”, ‘The White Snake” “Buyer & Cellar”, “Arms and the Man”.

“Rich Girl”, “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” to the Outdoor Summer Shakespeare Festival featuring the plays: “Twelfth Night”, “Kiss Me, Kate” and “The Comedy of Errors”, in repertory, brings to a close another highly successful and entertaining season of quality theatre at the great Tony Awardwinning Regional Theatre in Balboa Park.

“The Comedy of Errors” is a crafty selection, by Edelstein, to close out the ‘summer season’ at The Old Globe. Under Director Ellis’ creative staging, the masterful production, has been moved up in time from an Elizabethan setting to the jazzage, sexy, wide-open, ‘laissez les bon temps rouler’ lifestyle of 1920’s New Orleans (NOLA).

The text, however, with

its zany narrative and sharply executed shenanigans, along with Shakespearean accented speeches are still in place, but now there is an insouciance, and a cultural overlay in this production that compliments the NOLA of then as well as today.

The comic farce resonates in 2015 just as effectively as did the Abbott and Costello baseball

routine of mistaken identity in “Who’s on First” did back in the 1940’s.

It’s a given that when a story centers around two pairs of identical twins, in this case, boys; each a mirror image of the other - separated at birth by their parents and sent to live and be raised in different cities, that the possibilities for comedy scenarios are endless; especially when they constantly keep missing one another only to finally meet at the end. It’s a credit to this wonderfully talented cast of actors and dancers that the hilarity of mistaken identity in one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies is so entertainingly presented with style, wit, imagination, and high-octane energy.

Portraying the very confused sets of twins are gifted actors Glenn Howerton as Antipholus of Ephesus/Antipholus of Syracuse and Tony Award nominee Rory O’Malley as Dromio of Ephesus/ Dromio of Syracuse. Megan Dodds as Adriana, and Barrett Doss as Luciana, score as the love interests of the twins.

Strong support also comes from Austin Durant as Duke Solinus and as Doctor Pinch, and from Garth Schilling as the Courtesan; each delivering show-stopper moments, along with San Diego

favorite Deborah Taylor as Emelia, and Patrick Kerr as Egeon the father of the twin boys and the person responsible for setting all of this entertaining silliness in motion.

The Old Globe Theatre has few equals when it comes to technical disciplines. Director Ellis masterfully orchestrates the gifts that Scenic Designer Alexander Dodge provides in recreating a New Orleans we all have seen and know.

The colorful costumes for the ‘ladies of the night’ and those playing the locals, by designer Linda Cho are picture-perfect in style and period authenticity.

And, thanks to a lighting design

by Philip S. Rosenberg, we get to see and enjoy the impeccable timing and pacing taking place on-stage.

Ellis even manages to squeeze in a traveling group of street musicians at the proper moments which greatly enhances the on-stage action and the overall production. I was ready for a hearty, delicious-tasting, bowl of ‘gumbo’ following the 90 minute, no-intermission,show.

“The Comedy of Errors” production, now performing in the Lowell Davies Outdoor Festival Theatre is a splendid evening in the theatre that runs through September 20, 2015.
