“Fun, Fun, Fun.” Brian Wilson and The Zombies bring classics to Fantasy Springs Resort By Robert Kinsler Less than a week after catching The Rolling Stones thrill a packed State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, I was able to catch a decidedly more intimate bill celebrating ‘60s-spawned rock courtesy of a promising bill featuring Brian Wilson and The Zombies at the Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio on Sept. 1. Fresh off the band’s
induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, England’s Zombies have continued to enjoy a welldeserved resurgence because of a number of fortuitous factors including burgeoning interest in the band’s 1968 masterwork “Odessey and Oracle” and a slew of high-profile performances showcasing the fully-intact talents of singer Colin
Blunstone and keyboardistcomposer Rod Argent. In fact, prior to catching The Zombies in Indio on Sunday night, this writer last caught the band earn a standing ovation opening for Arcade Fire at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles in September 2018. The crowd at Fantasy Springs was rewarded with a special set that covered the band’s stellar range
of intoxicating material during their set. Opening with the blues rock nugget “Roadrunner” (the Bo Diddley cover was the first song off the band’s 1965 debut “Begin Here”), the Zombies covered plenty of territory over 65 minutes. The prestigious Pride Honors are presented annually to individuals to recognize their efforts in raising awareness and furthering the causes of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and their allies. The awards ceremony is September 24, at the Hilton Palm Springs. Six awards celebrate influential voices in the community, a former mayor, a teacher, a retired Army Master Sergeant and a 43year veteran drag performer. The awards program marks
the approach of Pride Week in the region under the universal theme of Millions of Moments of Pride. Recognized as the Advocate of the Year for working to raise the consciousness of race and racism in our community is author, radio show host and retired attorney Lauren N. Nile. The Spirit of Pride Award recognizes Ellen Wolf for enhancing the quality of life in the region by raising awareness to advance equality, promote diversity, or celebrate the strength and talent of the on projects that advance LGBTQ community.
