By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, CA – Visitors to the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert (CDMOD) may notice a sweet sound coming from the Museum. With a grant from The Sweet Stuff Foundation, CDMOD has installed three outdoor musical instruments.

The instruments can be heard from the parking lot and are the beginning of a musical pathway leading from the picnic area to the traveling exhibit gallery. Visitors are encouraged to play on the tuned drums, strike a chime, or play a musical melody on the large metallophone,

a type of xylophone.

“Music is such an important part of a child’s life. It provides children and families with a creative outlet for energy and thoughts,” said Carol E. Scott, CDMOD CEO. “We are very excited for this gift and partnership with The Sweet Stuff Foundation, which is providing the Museum with a much needed musical component for our members and visitors to enjoy.”

The Sweet Stuff Foundation is based in Palm Desert. The nonprofit is committed to assisting with music lessons,

CIA tweets about birthday, gets trolled in comments

By Desert Star Staff The CIA has tweeted a GIF marking its 71st birthday – and while some folks on Twitter took the opportunity to express their sincere thanks to the intelligence agency for the work it does, others were, let’s just say, not so kind.

The simple selfcongratulatory GIF showed confetti falling over the years ‘1947 - 2018’ with the words “celebrating 71 years” written underneath and the CIA’s logo in the middle. It wasn’t long before the responses to the birthday tweet started rolling in.

Some Americans praised the “heroes” of the organization and the “sacrifices” made to ‘keep the US safe’.

A significant proportion of the responses, however, came from users calling

the agency out for its questionable behavior over the past 71 years.

One user congratulated the CIA on 71 years of “deception, death and destruction,” while another noted it had been 71 years chock full with “espionage and regime change” abroad. One user was more straightforward and condemned the more than seven decades of “supporting terrorists” and “killing all sorts of innocent people along the way.”

Some tongue in cheek responses made reference to the organization’s notorious secrecy and omnipotence.

Others had some burning questions they wanted answered. Like, for example, if there is something the US public still doesn’t

know about the 9/11 terror attacks – or if the CIA could use its overthrowing powers to “do something” about the

current president in the White House, Donald Trump.

One user suggested that 71 years might be a

good time to “call it quits and let the people of the world live in peace”.

Allegations against Kavanaugh like ‘dynamite wrapped in radioactive material’

By Desert Star Staff Allegations of sexual misconduct against US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh are like “four sticks of dynamite wrapped in radioactive material” due to their timing, NBC host Chuck Todd has said.

College professor Christine Blasey Ford has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her 35 years ago at a high school party. Kavanaugh, who was nominated for the Supreme Court position by President Donald Trump in July, has adamantly denied the accusation, saying it is “completely false”and that he has “never done anything” like what the accuser has described.

Both Ford and Kavanaugh will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee next Monday, during which the public will get to hear both sides.

Speaking on NBC’s Today show, Todd compared the atmosphere around the

Kavanaugh nomination to the 1991 confirmation hearings of Justice Clarence Thomas, who was accused of sexual harassment by Anita Hill.

Todd said the timing of the Ford/Kavanaugh hearing so close to midterm elections and in the“Donald Trump era” made the whole thing feel like a “tinderbox”.

“It just seems that either side could see an eruption of a culture war that defines the rest of the midterm election in six weeks that could totally scramble what the outcomes could be,” the Meet The Press host said.

Indeed, the timing of the accusations, just before the vote to confirm Kavanaugh and two months before the hugely consequential congressional midterm elections, has raised eyebrows among some of Kavanaugh’s supporters and led to some heated online debate.

Ford’s allegation was made public last week by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California).

She admitted that she

received a letter in July, but said she did not act on it out of respect for the accuser, who did not wish to be named.

Some have suggested that Feinstein’s timing indicates that the scandal is a last-minute effort by Democrats to derail Kavanaugh’s nomination, which they have been strongly opposed to, as it would shift the political balance on the court to the right.

and only the substance of the allegations matter.

In order to defeat Kavanaugh’s nomination, Senate Democrats need to convince two Republicans to vote with them.

Todd suggested that he wouldn’t be surprised if the allegations and new controversy around his nomination caused Kavanaugh to “withdraw and chose to back down” — but so far, Kavanaugh has showed no

signs that he is considering withdrawing his name as a Supreme Court nominee.

More than 22 million people tuned in to watch the infamous Thomas/Hill testimony in 1991. Thomas was confirmed in a 5248 Senate vote and is still a sitting Supreme Court judge today. “Those community health centers generate $1.2 billion in economic activity every year.”

Building and remodeling projects at the health centers attract investment and other businesses to local communities, and the report also found that centers help attract and retain more residents.

The centers contributed $177 million in total local, state and federal tax revenue, and brought $114 million in federal grants to Colorado.

The state’s community health centers put 5,300 Coloradans to work, and provide career paths for doctors, dentists, nurses, professional front-line staff and also IT techs and accountants.

Pam McManus, president and CEO of Peak Vista Community Health Centers, said they provide critical workforce development through onthe-job training and formal certification programs.

“And especially in our rural locations, we’re considered a major employer, which

“By getting people the preventative care they need earlier on, and helping keep people out of the hospital unnecessarily,” he said.

“That’s a way in which we save significant taxpayer dollars and resources.”

In 2016, the health centers delivered comprehensive primary health care to more than 1-in-8 Coloradans.

Since then, that number has grown to 1-in-7.

Local Resident Shows Off Seventeen Emmy Awards

KMIR Daytona Everett As the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards premieres Monday, a Palm Desert transplant is showing off his golden statues; seventeen to be exact.

Harry Kooperstein, a producer, director and creator, knew from the beginning he had a knack for television.

“I looked technically to see what was good or what was bad and I’d see things,” he said. “Things other people wouldn’t see.”

Before television, Kooperstein would watch projections at movie theaters.

When television came around, he began to critique the technical methods.

The director’s shelves at his Palm Desert home are filled with awards, memorabilia, and seventeen Emmy awards, making it obvious he had a golden career.

His journey began at a local news station in

Columbus, Ohio where he was hired as a prop boy. It wasn’t long before Kooperstein worked his way up to a director position in Indianapolis, which lead him to meet a young weatherman, who now, is a household name.

“One time we were watching the Bishop and Regis show and he looked over at me and he said ‘you know, one of these days, I’m gonna do a show like this,” he said. “His name is Letterman.”

That’s right, David Letterman. Kooperstein would go on to meet several Hollywood stars, most stemming from his work as director and producer of Live from the Hollywood Bowl, where he channeled his ear for music from his days as a band member at Ohio State.

His accomplishments range from eight Emmy’s for Live From the Hollywood Bowl with hosts that included

Carol Burnett, Tyne Daly and Alex Trebeck, five Emmy’s as outstanding Director of Live Special Events, two for Awards of Excellence and two more for Outstanding Non-News Director.

Wood, he came to know Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles and Christopher Plummer. The tribute was one of his proudest accomplishments, he said.

Like Hitchcock’s illusive, secret plot-device - the ‘MacGuffin in all his films, that ploy keeps audiences engaged, waiting for more to come. There are echoes here similar to the plight of Becket’s characters in “Waiting for Godot” as well. However, when one is dealing in ‘magical realism’ as a leit-motif, maybe it’s okay just to go with the flow and ditch reality as we presently understand it.

The technical credits, however, almost steal the show. The creative team led by director Bonney includes: Scenic Designer Myung Hee Cho, who creatively enlarges the stage and acting space of the Geffen, turning the stage into a veritable Garden of Eden in Act Two. Lighting Designer Lap Chi Chu provides supporting mood-inducing moments.

Stephanie Kerley Schwartz costume designs are appropriate as is the sound design by the redoubtable Cricket S. Myers. The clever Projection Designs of Hana S. Kim, definitely enhances the overall ’fantastical’ quality and message of playwright Rivera and the vision of director Bonney.

The Broadway hit “Beautiful--The Carole King Musical” is back in L.A. If you missed the show in 2016, now’s your chance to experience this tunefilled musical biography once again playing at the Pantages Theatre.

The story begins in Brooklyn. Carole (Sarah Bockel) is a teenager determined to write pop music even though her mother Genie (Suzanne Grodner) wants her to become a teacher. Grodner is warm and funny as Mama, and in the end, she’s convinced it was she who talked her daughter out of a teaching job and into a musical career.

East Coast Factory Ships Depleting Whale Food Stocks

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK — The return of a major food fish has brought whales and larger fish back to New York waters, but conservation groups fear factory ships may reverse those gains.

Seven years ago, fishery managers sharply limited commercial fishing of menhaden - or bunker fish - in Atlantic coastal waters.

Menhaden are harvested to make pet food, fertilizer and fish oil. But according to Carl LoBue, New York Ocean Program director at The Nature Conservancy, the limit has been raised three times since then, and now is higher than it was in 2012.

“Now, out-of-state ships

have been steaming up the coast to harvest massive amounts of menhaden from areas off of New York and New Jersey, where these areas are supporting whale and dolphin feeding aggregations,” LoBue said.

In 2017, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission approved an increase of more than 200,000 metric tons in the annual menhaden catch off the East Coast.

LoBue said he believes the commission is ignoring important considerations when they set limits on the catch.

“They have yet to factor in the ecological and economic value of leaving menhaden in the water before they calculate how many can be harvested

out,” he said. “And that is a big change that’s long overdue, and needs to happen soon.”

The commission is made up of representatives from each of the 15 Atlantic coastal states, including New York.

New York has jurisdiction over commercial fishing within

three miles of its coast. While that’s just a small fraction of the area where menhaden are harvested, LoBue noted there are steps the state can take to extend some protection.

“The New York State Legislature can finish what it started last year and pass

a law preventing these industrial-scale menhaden harvest practices in New York State waters,” LoBue said.

He added that menhaden close to shore play a vital role in reducing excess nitrogen by consuming the plankton that absorbs it.

Hurricane Underscores Climate Vulnerabilities in Eastern NC

By Desert Star Staff NEW BERN, N.C. — Communities in eastern North Carolina have a long road to recovery after Hurricane Florence. And scientific research indicates weather events like this weekend’s intense rainfall are becoming more common, in part because of climate change - but there’s a data gap in the research.

That’s the premise of an article in the North Carolina Medical Journal, released Thursday. It said rural communities in the eastern part of the state also face other climate-related challenges, including access to health care and heat-related illnesses. And study author Greg Kearney, associate professor at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University’s Department of Public Health, said it’s time to talk about them.

“We’ve been talking about

climate change for years, but it seems like it’s still not at the topic of conversation for a lot of folks,” Kearney said. “And the real motivation for this paper was to really put the focus on eastern North Carolina.”

The medical journal issue, sponsored by Clean Air Carolina and Duke University Environmental Health Scholars Program, also included articles on the increased risk of cardiovascular disease, neuro-cognitive disorders, osteoporosis and diabetes, all related to air pollution.

The researchers found only 40 percent of the medical professionals who deal with heart health report discussing the risks associated with air pollution with their patients.

Kearney said the economic challenges faced by communities in eastern North Carolina further complicate access to appropriate health care and knowledge that might

“Eastern North Carolina suffers from a lot of different factors than the rest of the state,” he said. “We’re higher in terms of percent of poverty

and the population. We have chronic health conditions that people are plagued with.”

Kearney’s research also pointed out that severe weather - another factor of climate change - presents a particular

danger to rural communities, which sometimes lack the communication technology or power generators for medical facilities needed in weather emergencies.

1/2 cup dried figs, chopped 1/3 cup finely sliced red onion 4 tablespoons Lemon Dressing 1 grapefruit, segmented 1/3 cup shredded pecorino cheese Heat oven to 375 F. To make Lemon Dressing: mix olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

On lined baking sheet, toss hazelnuts with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper, to taste.

Roast 10­15 minutes, or until lightly brown; let cool.
