Laman spent two years on the former Annenberg estate capturing the courtship dances, hunting habits, and mid-air acrobatics of some of the 130 species of birds that have been spotted at Sunnylands so far.

KMIR Max Rodriguez On September 8, 1951, 48 nations signed the San Francisco Peace Treaty officially ending the Allied Powers occupation of Japan post World War II, but before peace was reached, air combat was one of them main way to conquer battles and a key aircraft used for winning happens to sit inside the Palm Springs Air Museum.

The Vice-Chairman of the museum, Fred Bell, said the U.S. Army Air Corps servicemembers first trained in an AT-6 Texan, the cockpit fits two, the pilot and the trainer.

Bell said, “So if they had a problem they can learn in that airplane with an instructor before they went and fight in there by themselves.”

Training pilots how to fly a war plane seems obvious but in the middle of war, details went out the window.

Bell said, “And they send them right into combat and these pilots might only know straight level flight and so it was fatal.”

American Pilots spent 100 hours training inside an AT-6 Texan.

On this Saturday, visitors of the museum were able to take a closer look at the war plane and actually go inside the cockpit, Zane Hathaway and his little sister were one of the visitors who saw the inside of the plane, he said, “You could move it left and right to move the wings up and down.”

The plane inside the Palm Springs Air Museum still flies and even though the aircraft will not fly out of the hangar anytime soon, the curiosity to go inside a cockpit of a war plane from WWII goes beyond children.

the museum from Orange County with his wife, he was one of many visitors to hop on the AT-6 Texan.

“It’s a different sensation to sit inside an older plane and look at what they were dealing with,” Stuck said.

The staff of at the museum are happy to share the plane’s history with visitors, but most importantly they want to raise interest for a new generation of pilots.

Trump Healthcare Plan to Cut Costs on Health Insurance

I, personally, did not support the idea of a Single Payor system or the ACA plan. I believe that Americans want to have Freedom of Choice. Open Competition has always provided quality care in America. When the Government manages services, quality seems to increase costs.

In California, indifference with what you were told, before Obamacare, anyone who was willing to pay for insurance, could get insurance no matter what Pre-Existing conditions that they had. Several plans, such as the Major Risk Medical Insurance Plan or Access for Mothers and Infants, along with Medi-Cal provided benefits for all. At that time a Pregnant woman who qualified for low income could obtain coverage for her and her unborn child for approximately $30 per month.

Others could get covered under Major Risk Medical Insurance Plan (Mr.MIP). And the Major Risk plan for a 45-year old, with a $500 Deductible, would only cost about $450 a month.

These plans did not have a huge out of pocket costs either. Before ACA, another way that we could provide coverage for a client who had a pre-existing condition was to insure them on a Small Group plan, which is the direction that we are headed today Obamacare made it easier to qualify for Medi-Cal, which perhaps should have been the only change to Healthcare, in hindsight. The Trump plan

will be similar to what we did before the ACA, by offering Group Rates. Americans need a break from High Healthcare Costs. The Trump plan seems to be similar to healthcare before Obamacare, by providing Americans with what they want, which is Lower Costs and Easy access!

Many people would prefer to pay fewer premiums, as long as their plan covers vital services. To afford monthly premiums, especially for older people, who do not qualify for subsidies under ACA, they are facing having to insure with high deductible plans, which covers nothing until you reach your deductible. ($6,500 Deductible plans!), The Trump administration’s new health insurance option offers lower premiums for small businesses and for those who would become an association member. These are called “association health plans.”

These plans would provide you with lower premiums, however, may not cover all the Bells and Whistles of ACA. You would have access to Group rates and greater choices in plan options. You will have more than 4 possibilities than ACA. The Four on ACA are: (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). The new Trump plans to incorporate

the same protections for enrollees with pre-existing conditions that ACA and Group plans have always offered.

One concern of implementing the Trump plan is that it could cause ACA plans to increase even higher.

If healthier people chose The Trump intends to save money, it could leave more unhealthy insureds in ACA plans. If healthy people flock to the new plans, as expected, premiums will rise for those who need comprehensive coverage.

Some of the additions benefits of joining an association plan are the use of using Section 125 of the Tax Code, in which health insurance is paid with Pre-Taxed dollars.

By purchasing a Trump model plan. Some small-business groups said the administration is providing needed flexibility in the face of rising premiums.

As a broker, we look for ways we can help our clients because we understand that much about insurance is Risk and Reward. You can lower your costs by “self -insuring” some of the services included in ACA. By not covering all of the “No Costs” coverages under Essential Benefits (preventative testing), your premiums will be much lower.

Personally, if I am not going to

use all those coverages, I would prefer not to pay for them.

Another way to cut healthcare costs, would be by purchasing a temporary healthcare plan, which has now been approved for a one-year coverage period and is significantly less than ACA plans, however these plans will not cover Preexisting conditions, or service like Mental and Nervous and involvement in individual sports, like bungy jumping, auto racing, skydiving are excluded from coverage. Of course, if you did this, you would always be able to reenroll in an ACA plan during open enrollment each year.

CCAL The federal Housing and Urban Development Department (“HUD”), adopted regulations in September 2016 which for the first time prohibited sexual harassment within housing accommodations. “Housing accommodations” in this context includes homeowner associations. These regulations have thus far not received widespread attention, but in California this will change soon.

In August 2018 the California Fair Employment and Housing Council approved Fair Housing regulations, providing the first written enforcement guidelines to help associations comply and avoid exposure to state or private discrimination claims. The new state regulations will take effect on January 1 or April 1, 2019, after some further rulemaking process, and will be found at California Code of Regulations 12000-12271.

The inaugural regulations do not address all Fair Housing issues but are informative regarding accommodation of disabilities and assistance animals, and also bring a new requirement by echoing the HUD regulations (as California must) by requiring housing providers to reasonably

respond to sexual harassment against residents.

Sexual harassment was previously considered only as an employment issue, and its two varieties - unwanted sexual advances and hostile environment- have both long been illegal in the workplace.

Under the new regulations, associations must protect residents from unwanted advances not only from vendors or management, but also from other residents. If a resident complains against a neighbor, what should associations do, since they can’t relocate or evict residents? Kevin Kish, Director of the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, said “an HOA can’t be liable for failure to take an action it doesn’t have the power to take.” Under section 12010(c) a violation exists where the person knew or should have known of the discriminatory conduct and had the power to correct it.

Hostile environment claims normally evoke the notion of sexually charged banter, conduct or displays. However, HOAs may be unable to act if their rules do not ban such conduct or statements, and Civil Code 4710 protects display of non-commercial signs (even objectionable ones).

Will HOAs be prosecuted for conduct they cannot stop?

Director Kish stated, “that’s a

separate question from whether we as the state could hold an individual liable for his or her own acts, regardless of what the HOA can or cannot do.”

How do HOAs deal with “he said - she said” situations?

Can associations ignore the complaint if the accused resident flatly denies it? Director Kish said “whether an HOA can ‘throw up its hands’ depends to some degree on the power it has to take action in a given scenario. In the case of a harassment allegation involving two homeowners, the actions available may be more limited, but there still may be available actions.”

Such actions might include asking the residents to avoid each other, or recommending Internal Dispute Resolution. Should the HOA after investigating still reasonably be unable to determine what happened, only then can the matter be considered unresolvable.

Some respected HOA

attorneys have recommended HOAs adopt rules barring sexual harassment conduct.

However, associations may want to avoid accepting this responsibility, as volunteers have insufficient resources to handle interpersonal behavior issues. Rather than regulating personal misconduct, perhaps the HOA’s effort is better spent educating residents on their rights under the Fair Housing regulations, and their protections from Director Kish’s DFEH.

Apple ‘Gather round’ 2018 iPhone event scheduled for September 12

By Desert Star Staff Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new research note today, obtained by MacRumors, that outlines several predictions about Apple’s upcoming products, including new iPhone, iPad Pro, Apple Watch, and MacBook models.

Kuo expects Apple to replace Lightning with a USB-C interface on 2018 iPad Pro

models, with an 18W power adapter in the box. That sure sounds like the next iPad Pro will have a USB-C port, instead of a Lightning connector, but to play devil’s advocate, there’s a chance he is just referring to a USB-C charger.

In addition to Face ID support, we expect the new iPad Pro models’ main upgrade to include replacing

Lightning with a USB-C interface and bundling with a new unibody design 18W power adapter, which cancels the removable plug design…

Kuo adds that 2018 iPhone models will retain the Lightning connector and remain bundled with a 5W power adapter, not the widely rumored 18W power adapter with a USB-C port, which could be for 2018

iPad Pro models after all.

His research note with TF International Securities adds that Apple’s widely anticipated lower-priced MacBook may replace the current 12-inch MacBook. Again, the wording is somewhat ambiguous, so it’s unclear if Kuo means the 12inch MacBook will be refreshed, or if it will be entirely replaced.

Kuo expects the new lower-priced MacBook to support Touch ID fingerprint authentication, but without a full-out Touch Bar, which remains exclusive to select 13- and 15-inch models of the 2016 and later MacBook Pro: The new low-price MacBook may replace the position of the current 12” MacBook. We expect this new model to support the Touch ID but it will not have the Touch Bar. Everwin Precision is the main beneficiary because it is the first time this company will enter the Mac casing supply chain and its shipments account for 20% of the new MacBook model’s D parts.

As far as the Apple Watch

By Desert Star Staff Multiple White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, have denied writing a New York Times piece, in which the writer claims to be an insider working against Trump, as the search for the saboteur heats up.

In the op-ed, titled “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration,” published Wednesday, an anonymous White House “senior official” describes a mentally unstable president who makes impulsive decisions and unpredictably about-turns on policies.

The unnamed official also described a concerted effort from themselves and others to thwart “parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.”

President Trump has accused the newspaper of treason, and demanded it reveal the source’s identity, if the source even exists. In the meantime, speculation has reached boiling point.

White House aides are reportedly scrabbling to find the mole, and the media has offered up some colorful theories of its own.

State Secretary Mike Pompeo was first to deny involvement. Channelling his inner Shaggy, Pompeo said on Thursday: “It’s not mine.”

Speaking to reporters after a meeting in New Delhi, India, he said “It shouldn’t surprise anyone” that the New York Times would run a hitpiece on Trump. If the piece actually was written by a highlevel insider, Pompeo said

that the newspaper “should not well have chosen to take a disgruntled, deceptive, bad actor’s word for anything.”

Pompeo’s enthusiastic ‘wasn’t me’ only strikes one name off a list that could stretch into the thousands, depending on the paper’s definition of a “senior official.” Amid the gossip, bookmakers in America have offered odds on the source, focusing on the big names in the Trump administration.

Vice President Mike Pence is online betting platform MyBookie’s favorite, at 4/6. He is followed by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at 2/1, Pompeo at 4/1, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin at 4/1, Chief of Staff John Kelly at 4/1, Defense Secretary James Mattis at 5/1, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions at 5/1.

Many of these figures have also been accused of badmouthing the President and sabotaging his ill-conceived decisions in a recent book by veteran Journalist Bob Woodward.

President Trump has blasted Woodward’s “made up” and “nasty” book, which heavily relies on anonymous sources, and both Kelly and Mattis have emphatically denied the book’s accounts of their behavior.

Already, amateur sleuths have been analysing the New York Times’ mystery leaker’s writing style, looking for hints hidden in the prose.

The first clue: the author’s use of the word “lodestar” in the article’s penultimate

paragraph. Vice President Mike Pence has repeatedly used the word in his speeches, and its occurence here shot him to the top of the bookies’ favorites.

Still, one word is not a smoking gun, and could point to a former speechwriter, a lowly staffer looking to throw people off the scent, or an unrelated nobody. Moreover, the silver fox himself denied penning the piece on Thursday. “The Vice President puts his name on his OpEds,”tweeted Jarrod Agen, Pence’s communications director. “The @nytimes should be ashamed and so should the person who wrote the false, illogical, and gutless op-ed. Our office is above such amateur acts.”

Defense Secretary James Mattis also denied writing the hit-piece, said a Pentagon spokeswoman on Thursday.

One day beforehand, Mattis

had also been emphatic in his denial of Bob Woodward’s allegations, which he said were the “product of someone’s rich imagination.”

Mattis’ denial was followed by additional ‘wasn’t me’s’ from Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.

The writer is more than likely male, given that the New York Times referred to “he” in a tweet promoting the op-ed. In panning the leaker, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders also referred to the writer of the “pathetic, reckless, and selfish op-ed” as a man.

Whoever “he” is, his article does appear to validate the President’s oft-repeated claim that an unelected “deep state” is working to undermine his presidency. Journalist Glenn Greenwald noted that the article criticizes Trump for

In the article itself, the official uses similar language to describe his own antiTrump efforts. He describes his “resistance”as different from that of the political left, and says, rather menacingly, that the ‘cabal’ will “steer the administration in the right direction until — one way or another — it’s over.”

“This isn’t the work of the so-called deep state,” he writes. “It’s the work of the steady state.”

Dog owners dish on how food factors into pet bonding

sk most dog owners and they’ll tell you that they count the bonds they share with their pets among their most treasured relationships.

However, that boundless affection and loyalty isn’t a one-sided effort; dog owners are demonstrating their puppy love in numerous ways, especially when it comes to chow time.

There’s much to be said for the unique relationship people share with their dogs, according to the 2018 Pets and People Survey

by Just Right by Purina. Nearly unanimously (95 percent), respondents said they view their dogs as part of their families, and more than half reported that their pet pals help them de-stress after a long workday and have comforted them after receiving bad news.

Just like any relationship, the bond with a dog requires nurturing. As it turns out, most dog owners are working to keep the love alive with a familiar approach: the notion that the fastest path to the heart is through the stomach. After all, when you view pets as family, you may as well feed them like it.

Encouraging dinner dialogue

A helpful aspect of pet bonding is developing communication patterns that your dog can recognize and understand. In part, this involves commands to help manage behavior, but it often includes other forms of engagement, as well.

Mealtime is an ideal opportunity to enjoy some extra interaction, from asking if your dog is hungry to talking your way through filling his or her bowl with a personalized dog food blend. In fact, 64 percent of dog owners surveyed reported asking their dog if it likes its food after serving it. There may not be a verbal response, but dogs give off plenty of signals to let you know whether or not they’re enjoying the meal.

Personalizing the experience

Humans agree that eating or drinking out of a favorite vessel just makes mealtime more special. That may be the motivation for the 65 percent of dog owners who reported taking time to personalize their dogs’ bowls.

The majority of dog owners surveyed agreed the type of food their dog eats has an impact on its health and mood. For 43 percent of Millennial dog owners surveyed, they reported spending more money on their dog’s food than their own groceries. CV mayors say public safety costs increasing year after year

KMIR Vincenzo Marino Mayors from across the Coachella Valley gathered Friday for a discussion on the economic status, real estate market, and plans of each desert city.

The mayoral conference happens once a year, and it gives the desert’s top city

officials the opportunity to discuss their state of affairs, bounce ideas off each other and of course talk about some of the challenges facing each city.

On the agenda were things like the status of each cities real estate market, future plans and of course the economy.

“La Quinta is in a very favorable position right now.

Our budget was balanced in July when we set a new budget for next year,” said La Quinta Mayor Linda Evans.

“Our finances are in great condition. Our revenues are exceeding predictions,” said Indio Mayor Michael Wilson.

“Our status is good we’ve got a balanced budget.

We’ve got money in reserve, about 20 million dollars in reserve,” said Cathedral City Mayor Stan Henry.

“As usual we’re in great shape, We just passed another balanced budget for about 58 million dollars,” said Palm Desert Mayor Sabby Jonathan.

“We’re really in a renaissance…our income is going up because of TOT and vacation rentals and hotels and the revenue from tourism,” said Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon.

While it would seem as though Coachella Valley cities are thriving, the single issue virtually every city in the desert struggles with is the cost of public safety.

“The cost keeps escalating. We’re approaching 50 percent of our entire budget being devoted to police fire and emergency, and the increases keep happening

every year,” said Jonathan.

“Uncontrollable costs.

Those are the increase in police services and fire services,” said Evans.

“Like every city, we’re anxious about the cost of health care and public safety and pension costs,” said Moon.

“Those types of increases are unsustainable. So it’s a challenge for us and most cities here in the Coachella Valley,” Jonathan said.

It’s difficult to determine precisely what’s driving the increased costs since every city is different, but one thing is consistent across each town in the desert. The population is growing, and more people are staying full time.

Consumer Advocates Urge Governor to Limit Short-Term Health Plans

— Groups fighting to keep California’s health care system on track are calling on Gov. Jerry Brown to sign Senate Bill 910 which would limit short-term insurance plans.

The Trump administration finalized new rules in August to allow so-called skinny plans to remain in force for three years, claiming it will increase competition and offer a lower-cost alternative. But State Sen. Ed Hernandez, who authored the bill, called the plans “junk insurance” that will rob consumers of important protections.

“They don’t realize that they can get kicked off with a pre-existing condition. There’s no max amount of out-ofpocket expenses, so if they get some kind of devastating health condition, it could lead them into bankruptcy,” Hernandez said. “So, I don’t

think it’s in the best interest of the state of California.”

The short-term plans are exempt from the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, so many don’t cover mental health, maternity or pediatric care.

Supporters of SB 910 argue the plans could lure young, healthy people out of the Covered California insurance market. The result would be more older, sicker people in the risk pool, which would drive premiums sky-high.

Brown has until September 30 to sign the bill, veto it, or let it become law without his signature.

Brown also is considering a bill that would limit the sale of association health plans, one that would prevent eligibility restrictions requiring Medi-Cal recipients to work, and another to safeguard ACA rules that require health

Pro-Choice Groups Continue Call for Oversight of “Fake Clinics”

A new state law provides taxpayer dollars to the nearly 200 faith-based organizations that purport to offer counseling to pregnant women. But some advocates for women’s health claim the centers are “fake clinics.” The centers are part of the Florida Pregnancy Care

Network, which has received $21 million in state funding since 2007 - including $4 million in the current budget.

Amy Weintraub is reproductive-rights program director for the group Progress Florida. She said she wants the state department of health to regulate the centers because she believes they are misleading women.

“They are anti-abortion, and they provide biased information to try to persuade women out of accessing

abortion care,” Weintraub said. “Almost none of them provide any medical care aside from an ultrasound.”

Conservatives support the centers as a counterbalance to what they see as a proliferation of abortion clinic doctors. The National Women’s Liberation group is planning a “Fake Clinic Picket” in Tallahassee for Thursday, September 27, in conjunction with other rallies and protests around the state.

them and imploring them to do what is in the best interest of the health of Florida women and girls,” she said.

Report: Unions Key to Reducing Income Inequality

By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. – Researchers tapping more than eight decades of data say unions have played a critical role in reducing income inequality.

According to this month’s National Bureau of Economic Research digest, when unions are strong, workers have bargaining power with their bosses, and unions also help drive policies that ensure that gains from worker productivity benefit everyone, including Social Security, Medicare, higher minimum wages and paid family leave.

As union coverage dropped sharply over the past four decades, researchers tracked a rise in inequality.

Sue Martin, president and secretary-treasurer of the Nebraska AFL-CIO, says she’s not surprised by the study’s results.

“Workers have been seeing stagnant wages over the past several years, while the top 1 percent are getting richer,” she points out. “And Nebraska, like other states, have progressively seen a decline in union membership, while the CEOs of the largest corporations’ income has skyrocketed.”

She notes that declines in union membership are no accident, but a result of specific actions designed to weaken unions, including socalled right-to-work laws.

U.S. Supreme Court Janus ruling that stripped public sector unions of the ability to be compensated for the costs associated with negotiating contracts, unions will have to get creative to build up their memberships.

Martin adds creating coalitions across communities impacted by economic inequality, and explaining the value that unions provide to non-members, are good first steps.

“Unions aren’t bad guys,” she stresses. “Unions have

historically fought to make the lives of working people and their families better.

“I don’t think that people realize what an influence big business has on the policies that affect us.”

Martin says it’s easy for people to forget that ending child labor, establishing a 40hour work week and other gains made by unions were not just handed out, but required a lot of education, agitation and organizing.

Recently, 16 county sheriffs announced support for Measure 105, which would get rid of the state’s 31-yearold statute that prohibits use of state and local resources to enforce federal immigration law.

In his statement, Clatsop County Sheriff Thomas Bergin says failing to enforce immigration laws legitimizes more law breaking.

“We’re talking about communities of people that will be less likely to report crimes,” he states. “Victimization will be increased as people, again, (are) not willing to report crimes, and people will be taking advantage of that.”

Sheriffs in Multnomah and Washington counties oppose the measure. Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson signed the letter supporting

repeal of the state’s sanctuary law, but the county’s district attorney, John Hummel, has come out in opposition.

Manning says the Trump administration’s push to punish undocumented immigrants, and even counties and states with sanctuary laws, is affecting Oregon’s politics. He’s dismayed that a law that’s been on the books for 31 years is causing so much controversy.

“I am very disheartened to know this, and not only that, we’ve moved to a place where we’re in a sad state of mind,” he states.

Manning notes Oregon’s sanctuary law bars the use of state and local resources for arresting people wanted only for immigration violations.

AcMoody said the research also reveals that payday lenders are specifically targeting Michigan communities with higher concentrations of people of color and those with lower incomes.

“Payday loans are a high-cost solution to a short-term problem and they’re really built to take advantage of borrower’s financial vulnerability,” she said. “So what they’re doing is locating in communities where they can prey on financial vulnerable people. “ Beyond educating

Report Reveals Payday Loans are Draining Millions

By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. — Consumer advocates say strong reforms are needed to better regulate the payday lending industry in Michigan, and they just might have the data to prove it.

A new report from the Center for Responsible Lending found that in the past five years, payday lenders have taken more than half a billion dollars in fees from consumers in Michigan, including $94 million in 2016. Senior Policy Specialist with the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan Jessica AcMoody said with annual percentage rates in the triple digits, low-income customers often struggle to repay loans on time.

“The average fees equal about 340 percent APR right now. And 91 percent of payday loan borrowers in Michigan re-borrow within 60 days,” AcMoody said. “So what we really need are better

Burt Reynolds: A Remembrance

Burt Reynolds in “Smokey and the Bandit” It is always sad to say ‘goodbye’ to an old friend.

And even though most of us never got to know Burt Reynolds personally, we felt connected to him from the roles he played on screen.

Reynolds, born February 11, 1936, in Michigan, was a football star when he attended Florida State University. His plans for a professional football career ended abruptly after a car crash. As a result, he turned his attention to acting.

In the early days, he appeared on TV’s “Gunsmoke” before graduating to numerous roles on the silver screen. In 1972 he starred in “Deliverance” along with John Voight. However, he was most appealing in comedic films like “The Greatest Little Whorehouse in Texas” with Dolly Parton and “Smokey and the Bandit” in 1977 with Sally Field. He and Sally had a long-term romance. Years later he confided on air to

Barbara Walters that the love of his life was Sally, even though they never married.

Other women in his world included Dinah Shore and Judy Carne whom he married in 1963 and divorced in 1965.

Later he married actress Loni Anderson. Their union lasted from 1988 to 1994.

In the late ‘70s, he was one of the highest grossing stars in Hollywood. His career had some low points but peaked again in 1997 when he played

Jack Horner in “Boogie Nights,” a role which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

From September 1990 to May 1994 he played an ex-pro football player who returns to his hometown in Arkansas to coach a losing high school football team. The show, “Evening Shade,” aired on CBS. For fun, he once appeared as a centerfold in “Cosmopolitan” magazine.

Later he said that was a mistake. Other mistakes include turning down the Jack Nicholson role in “Terms of Endearment.” He also was offered the part of Han Solo in “Star Wars” as well as the chance to play “Bond-James Bond.” Ouch.

Burt Reynolds died on Thursday, September 6th from a heart attack. He was 82.

Sally Field said she “will hold him in her heart forever” and all of us who enjoyed him as an actor with a quick wit and warm smile will also miss him.

Mark Taper Forum launches 2018-2019 season with “Sweat”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Sweat, is a word with many connotations. Winston Churchill inspired a nation with his “blood, sweat, and tears” speech during WW II. American males usually associate it with the work ethic of the NFL. But in reality it identifies the character of America’s workingclass. The men and women who take on the toughest of jobs in the factories and in our various industries; sometimes the jobs no one else wants or is willing to do. They are Loyal, hard-working, and proud to be labeled blue-collar workers.

Prolific, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage, (“Ruined”, “Intimate Apparel”, “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark” and others) now tackles the thorny issues that has plagued American business practices for over a hundred years: the divide between the management class and the working class.

“SWEAT”, Ms. Nottage’s 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, directed by Lisa Peterson, examines the erosion of job security, via

downsizing, coupled with a feeling of betrayal by some, of unions that always provided their members a safety net and job security. The arc of the play begins in the year 2008, but flashes backward to 2000 then forward again to 2008.

The play centers around a parole officer two ex-convicts, and three women who were childhood friends working in the same factory, and a Greek chorus of one; in the form of the bartender Stan.

Bartenders, have always been good listeners and their advice, good or bad, is at least, always free. Sometime they have to become, referees in order to calm things down when friends have too much to drink. Also, rumors are rampant in bars and taverns, and a bartender can act as a facilitator; driving the content of the play’s message.

Most of the action in “Sweat” takes place in a bar in Reading Pennsylvania, a city hit hard by a downsizing economy and massive job cuts. Prospects for blue-collar workers are grim as more jobs move overseas. The effects of sweeping technology changes over the last ten years has hit blue collar workers in the ‘rust belt’ areas of America with the force of a tsunami. It’s not that difficult to draw comparisons

between Ms. Nottage’s characters, their situations and their dialogue that echoes those of “Trump supporters” during the 2016 Presidential campaign which still lingers into 2018.

The play begins with parole officer (Kevin T. Carroll) having a regularly scheduled meetings with his parolees Jason (Will Hochman) and then with Chris (Grantham Coleman). Now we jump to the bar scene (the play’s structure is very TV episodicdriven) where three factory friends: Tracey, Cynthia, and Jessie (Mary Mara, Portia, and Amy Pietz, respectively) have been drinking most of the day by the looks of them. Jessie has passed out on a table. And Tracey and Cynthia are slurring their words and swearing and cursing in the vernacular of the streets complaining about their jobs and their lives.

A cautionary note here: There are well over a ‘hundred f-bombs’ being hurled from the stage. Apparently, normalization of vernacular speech is well on its way in theatres today no matter how off-putting it might be. Whatever happened to the playwright’s best friend – the Thesaurus?

By Desert Star Staff Seems like axing the swimsuit contest for the Miss America show may have spectacularly backfired - ratings for the long-run beauty pageant have taken a nosedive… and that’s compared to last year’s already abysmal viewer numbers.

The 98th Miss America pageant has faced-off with the first football game of the season in the primetime TV spot… and lost. Significantly. The number of viewers who tuned in to the ABC’s screening of the beauty competition plummeted 36 percent in ratings compared to last year - which was then

a record-low performance.

Funnily enough, last year’s dismal attempt, the one that also went up against the very first Sunday of the NFL regular season as well. Apparently, ABC just does not learn.

According to showbiz news site The Wrap, ABC’s “Miss America” pageant averaged a 1.1 rating/4 share and had 5.4 million total viewers in 2017. Fast forward 12 months, and the revamped (less sexy) format managed to limp to a 0.7/3 and 4.3 million viewers. In other words, it was comparatively down 36 percent in the key demo and a mere 19 percent among

overall audience members.

NBC and Fox - who both had telecasts for Sunday’s football games - dominated the Nielsen figures. NBC totaled an average of 16.3 million viewers in primetime.

Those robust numbers are due to a combination of the NBC’s 80-minute pregame studio show and as much of the Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers game that would fit, as the game overruns the primetime slot. Fox came in second with 7.1 million viewers with its NFL overrun, postgame coverage, a new sitcom, followed by reruns.

respond only when the ladies want more refills. Stan is the only character that realizes what’s at stake for his clientregulars, going so far as to warn them that they all could go sleep one night and wake up to find that their jobs have been moved Mexico. But of course, no one listens. After all, they have the union and their years of loyalty to the company to protect them.

Mr. Coleman is the redeemed ex-con son of Cynthia and ex-con Brucie, (terrifically played by John Earl Jelks who created the role in the New York production) and Chris’ buddy Jason (Will Hochman) the son of Tracey who also frequent the bar, show up at the favorite watering hole of the factory floor workers.

The play also examines the tearing apart of a friendship when Cynthia and Tracey – one black, one white – apply for the same management job.

Cynthia gets the position, but soon when the company does indeed move jobs to Mexico, and the trade union goes on strike; the workers become locked out. The management division begins to separate the two friends, and racial tensions separate them further.

“Sweat” is an exercise in futility for blue-collar workers and is just one of the current issues

that plagues and divides the country on many levels not just job issues and the economy.

In the technical department, the creative team led by director Peterson includes scenic Designer Christopher Barreca, whose tavern/bar design is spectacular and practical even to working beer taps, and props. Emilio Sosa’s costumes are spot on for the denizens of the bar. Lighting by Anne Militello paints the stage in mood inducing moments, while projection design by Yee Eun Nam splashes the walls with a tad too much imagery from newspapers, movies and television. Sometimes, less is better so it doesn’t overwhelm the audience. Kudos, however, to Fight Director Steve Rankin for a most believable ‘rumble in the bar’ sequence. Regarding the pacing and voice modulation levels; let’s just chalk that up to opening night jitters.

As a fan of Ms. Nottage’s work, I was somewhat disappointed with “Sweat”. I was looking for a “Ruined”, or an “Intimate Apparel” experience. The cast, however, is absolutely, flat-out outstanding.

Now the ensemble’s enduring sound is showcased on “Latin Bugaloo: The Warner Bros. Singles.” Featuring all 14 A- and B-sides from the Bay Area-based band’s four albums released by Warner Bros.

Records in the early 1970s, the remastered cuts here sound amazing and showcase the approach of the troupe, led by bandleader Jorge Santana (the brother of Carlos Santana).

arbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, potentially deadly gas that can be produced by fuel-burning appliances. Stoves, fireplaces, furnaces and many other types of home appliances and cooking devices are potential sources.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning is a leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in the United States, responsible for more than 400 deaths and 50,000 emergency room visits each year.

Learn how to help protect yourself and your family from accidental CO poisoning with these tips from the experts at Kidde: 1. Have All Fuel-Burning Appliances Checked Annually Know that any fuel-burning appliance is a potential source of CO, including but not limited to: gas stoves and ranges, fireplaces and furnaces. Always be sure to turn your car off immediately when parked in the garage or carport, or simply finish your conversation outdoors or in the comfort of your home.

4. Never Use a Generator Indoors When the weather gets colder, storms can sometimes lead to power outages, and people turn to portable generators to power their homes. It’s important to remember to always keep portable generators outdoors – never bring them inside your house or garage, even if doors and

windows are open. The CDC recommends keeping portable generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors and windows.

Make sure to keep them at least 20 feet from your neighbors’ homes, as well. The same safety precautions apply to other portable appliances, such as portable grills and camp stoves.

5. Know the Signs of CO Poisoning In addition to properly maintaining the devices and appliances that generate CO and installing working CO alarms, it’s important to know the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning so you can get help before it’s too late. At high concentration levels, CO can be fatal in minutes. n Mild exposure: A slight headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, flu-like symptoms (but no fever) n Medium exposure: A severe headache, drowsiness, confusion, fast heart rate n Extreme exposure: Convulsions, unconsciousness, brain damage, heart and lung failure followed by death Carbon monoxide can be scary, but knowing the basics of staying safe from the silent killer can help you and your family can breathe easy all year long. How to Choose a Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Look for these features when purchasing a CO alarm: n Electrochemical Sensor: Alarms with an electrochemical sensor tend to be more stable in humidity and react well with temperature changes. n End-of-Life Warning: This alerts users when it is time to install a new alarm. n UL Listed: CO alarms should be approved by the Underwriters Laboratories.

There should be a label clearly marked on the alarm.

Under California Senate Bill 183, also known as the “Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act,” which went into effect July 1, 2011, all single-family homes with an attached garage or fossil fuel source are required to install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms within the home.

However, many people don’t realize that over time, the alarms’ sensors lose sensitivity as dust and other airborne contaminants build up in the sensing chamber. As a safety precaution, Underwriters Laboratories standards require CO alarms to have a certain lifespan.

Alarms purchased to comply with the law that was introduced in 2011 will start sounding an end-of-life beep indicating the need for replacement at some point in 2018.

There is a difference between an alarm’s end-of-life beep and the beep indicating that there is a CO hazard or the alarm needs new batteries. The end-of-life warning sequence may vary slightly depending on alarm brand. For example, Kidde CO alarms purchased in 2011 will indicate the need for replacement by sounding an end-of-life warning beep twice every 30 seconds.

Knowing how to identify various alarm beeps can be key to keeping your home safe: n End-of-life warning will occur every 30 seconds n If the alarm has a digital display, it will display the ERR or END error code n Replacing the battery will not stop the beep n The beep will only stop when the alarm is out of power It’s important to replace your alarm if you think it may be nearing expiration. Once alarms enter end-of-life mode, they can no longer detect CO.

North Coast Rep Theatre launches its 37th season with a triumphant “Blithe Spirit”

Oscar Hammerstein II, reportedly agonized over two lines of lyrics, for ten days and sometimes longer while his partner, Richard Rodgers, patiently waited for the great lyricist/librettist to send him more words so he could breathe life into the music of “Oklahoma”.

For fourteen years they worked separately. Rodgers in New York and Connecticut.

Hammerstein preferring to work from his farm in Pennsylvania. Genius comes in all shapes, genders colors and forms. Broadway theatres and the movies thrived on the results of their collaboration, no matter the distance between the creative team.

Noel Coward, was a prolific creature of the arts with a huge canon, as well.

He was a gifted writer, playwright, actor, director, composer, singer, songwriter, and producer who wrote over 35 plays, 16 musical revues a number of operettas, and radio shows. Poverty, in one’s childhood has driven many to succeed despite life’s many obstacles.

Coward also hungered for the lifestyle of the rich and famous and he always believed that it would happen to him. He coined the phrase ‘star quality’ as a requisite measurement for success in the theatre and the Arts and he was usually right; whether appraising his own skills or those of others. It’s a little mind-blowing when one learns that Mr. Coward, in 1941, wrote “Blithe Spirit” in just six days! But I digress.

North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT) of Solana Beach, CA, launches its 37th season with “Blithe Spirit”, a, light ‘comedy of manners’ play that made Noel Coward a worldwide celebrity. NCRT’s affable, theatre-savvy Artistic Director David Ellenstein, wisely tapped www.desertstarweekly.com

Southern California director/ actor Rosina Reynolds to once again helm a production from the pen of Coward. I still have wonderful memories from her 2014 production of Coward’s sophisticated comedy “Fallen Angels”.

Once again Ms. Reynolds lends her considerable directing skills; gifting North Coast Rep audiences with a flawless production. But she doesn’t do it all by herself.

Theatre is a collaborative art form with many moving parts, and Ms. Reynolds made all the right casting choices right from the get-go. Casting is 80 percent of the director’s job, and when it’s done properly, the results can be sublime.

“Blithe Spirit”, is a light comedy that deals with ghosts and centers around English socialite/novelist Charles Condomine (J.Todd Adams) and his second wife Ruth (Joanna Strapp). As a ploy to gather material for his next book, Charles invites local eccentric medium Madame Arcati (Susan Denaker) to conduct a séance for his dinner guest friends Dr. Bradman (Gil Berry) and Mrs. Bradman (Ava Burton). The scheme, however, backfires when his deceased first wife Elvira (Teagen Rose) is summoned from the ‘other side’, during the séance conducted by Madame Arcati who sweeps into the room a on a cold breeze felt by all, but is not seen by all. Only Charles can see and converse with Elvira.

The deft performances from director Reynold’s seasoned cast of pros elevates the already top tier production elements. The cast is always in their on-stage moments.

Steady eye contact along with terrific timing and pacing make this production such a joy to watch while waiting for the next comedy shoe to drop from this flawless ensemble cast.

Once again, the creative and inventive directorial touches of Ms. Reynolds win the day.

A great deal of the heavy comedy lifting falls to J. Todd Adams and Joanna Strapp as Charles and Ruth Condomine prototypes of the quintessential upper class English couple

and the epitome of what passes for Coward’s typical witty, elegant, English, upper class married couple.

Their on-stage chemistry is downright palpable and a thing of beauty to watch.

Ms. Strapp’s riveting comedy performance coupled with an impeccable English accent, manner and delivery make it hard to take one’s eyes off her when she’s on-stage because we’re always waiting to see what Ruth will do or say next. If the play was a novel, we would call her

performance a page turner.

Mr. Adams, is a coequal with Ms. Strapp when it comes to speech, action and frustration. Their performances complement one another; validating what professional actors can do with a sharp, well written, witty, comedy script.

Another scene stealing performance comes from Susan Denaker, as the flamboyant, eccentric, medium and clairvoyant Madame Arcati. Ms. Denaker, totally immerses herself into the soul of her quirky character delivering a richly nuanced and highly delightful and entertaining performance.

In 2009 I had the good fortune of seeing then 84 year-old, legendary Angela Lansbury perform the role of Madame Arcati on Broadway and she brought the house down. I had the good fortune pleasure again at NCRT’s opening night production of “Blithe Spirit”. Ms. Lansbury may have performed as Madame Arcati in New York, but I met the definitive Madame Arcati last week in the personage of on-stage actor Susan Denaker, in Solana

Beach, CA. It’s a superb comedy turn not be missed.

Strong support also comes from Teagen Rose as the seductive, foxy and coquettish Elvira, Gil Berry as Dr.Bradman, Ava Burton as Mrs. Bradman, and Michelle Marie Trester as Edith, the Maid, in a little comedy gem of a performance.

The technical credits at NCRT are always first rate and this production is no exception. Director Reynolds leads the creative team of Set Designer and resident design wizard, Marty Burnett and the Lighting Design by the redoubtable Matt Novotny together make for a formidable artistic team. The costumes designed by Elisa Benzoni are spot-on for the period as well as for functionality. Hair and Wig Designs are by Peter Herman, and Sound Design is by Aaron Rumley who also stage manages and shoots the publicity photos. Prop Designs by Holley Gillard completes the creative team.

“Blithe Spirit” is a splendid production that performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach, and runs through September 30, 2018.
