The Outstanding Public Service Award is designed to recognize individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty to represent, protect, and better their community. Council member Kite’s dedication to public service through his outstanding service to municipal government, leadership and activism with the League of California Cities, and his high personal character are the attributes that garnered him this prestigious award.

Councilman Kite was elected to Rancho Mirage City Council in 2000 and re-elected in 2004, 2008, and 2012. He served as Mayor in 2001, 2006, 2010, and 2013. In 2015, he was re-elected for another 4-year term on the City Council.

Councilman Kite joined the Executive Board of the League of California Cities in 2007 and was elected Chairman of the Riverside County Division in 2010. In 2015, he was elected to serve as President of League of California Cities, Mayors and Council Members Department Executive Committee. He currently serves as the immediate Past President.

He has attended all League of California Cities Division Executive Board meetings, all General Membership meetings

for the Division and attended all annual meetings in San Diego, Sacramento and San Francisco.

“My goal has always been to strengthen the position of the League in dealing with those issues discussed by Sacramento that impact our city’s future. It is important that cities are provided information about the League and understand the importance of having a strong voice. By Pat Krause The McCallum Theatre brought back the songs of the 60s, 70s and 80’era Hit Songs when the Beach Boys performed. Nostalgia was the name on the day. They performed two concerts on Sunday, Nov. 20th. An afternoon show at 3 and an early evening show at 7.

Both performances were sold out as fans wanted to see and hear these fantastic musicians that have been in the limelight since their first hit many years ago. There were eight artists on the stage.

The four front men included the two guitarists, and Bruce Johnston on the keyboard, an original member of the band and Mike Love, the lead singer for the Beach Boys.

With the California sound like the songs they wrote seemed to be for the young girls and guys. The crowds got larger and larger as their fame grew.

and I Get Around is still as current today as when it was written.

Mike Love asked the audience to hold up their phones and turn on the flashlights as they sang, California Girls, because the song was for all the women among the audience. It lit

phones filled the area as they held them swaying back and forth. One of their first hits was Good Vibrations and followed with others, Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Fun, Fun,Fun. The audience was thrilled to hear these songs again.

It seems everyone knows there was discord among the band years ago as Brian Wilson and Mike Love had a falling out. Those

were bad years that showed their dislike of one another.

Some members have gone on to solo careers, and a few have passed on. The band has all that behind them and now is on a mission of Love in their shows. One of the fans, Sue Harris-Lang went to high school with Mike Love and was very eager to see him perform.

The play revolved around actor Gavin Macleod. The play was held at the Indian Wells Theatre at the Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus. This play was made possible by The Auen Foundation. Special thanks went to Jerry and Barbara Keller and Lulu California Bristro. The Kellers were also a part of the cast in the play.

The play was a love story about a young couple and the years they spent apart. It was a testimonial about the Grand Ole Dame Hotel from a long time ago. The hotel was actually the Hotel Colorado and pictures from that Hotel are shown in the video screen during the Play. Some of the stories in the Play are from quotes in old newspapers.

were played by Gavin Maclead as the older man telling the story of his love for his girlfriend that he lost years ago and still cherished. The Love of his life was played

by Joyce Bulifant. Kaitlyn Farley played the daughter, and the grandchildren were played by Ciera Carr and Bennett Creighton who were terrific in their parts.

Local TV Host Patrick Evans portrayed the reporter in the Play. Sanford Reed and Adrienne Visnic played the young lovers. Joel Vig played President Teddy Roosevelt.

Other notable locals played the people that did the waltz at the Christmas party from long ago. These 10 were dressed in their finest gowns and tuxes for the part. There were many singing parts during the play and the songs were well done. To round out the history of the Hotel was Flappers dancing across the stage. There were children as little fairies while a ballerina

danced and a young couple danced as youthful lovers.

This was a really well done play that had a lot of people in the cast, about 38. Too many to list here.

Then there were the people behind the scenes to put on

this play. The Opening-Night show benefited VISIONARIES of Tools for Tomorrow and was held on Nov. 16th.

There were 2 more matinee performances that were held on Nov. 19th and 20th that benefited CSUSB Palm

on undoing the ACA, there’s more likely to be a review of the law that seeks to preserve the portions that have worked, tweaking parts that can be optimized, and eliminating portions that have either not worked or have been opposed

by Republicans since the law was enacted six years ago.

The process should benefit value-based care initiatives that have shown promise. The fate of the ACA is important for healthcare providers, and particularly as they seek to make strategic plans for how they’ll operate and the kinds of information technology they’ll need to support those plans.

One thing that ACA didn’t do very well was that it didn’t get everyone covered.

President-elect Donald Trump wants to keep the Affordable Care Act’s mandate that pre-existing conditions be covered, but doing so without mandating that everyone buy health insurance won’t work, since everyone must pay their fair share to provide this benefit to those with illnesses.

It is believed that anyone currently covered will be able to keep their current coverage and cost containment will be implemented for rate increases.

ACA has introduced new approaches that the government is using to pay for care, such as accountable care organizations (ACOs) and bundled payments. Developed by the Center for Medicare and

Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), and many of the new models have been transferred to the regular Medicare program.

CMMI’s new approaches are estimated by the Congressional Budget Office to save $40 billion over 10 years. It’s hard to come up with those kinds of savings, which makes it hard to get rid of the innovation center.

Expansion of bundled payments hold particular promise. For example, the bundled payment program for knee and joint replacements has created a whole new dynamic way of providing care for patients, causing providers to work together, from before admission for the procedure (so-called pre-habilitation), the procedure itself and postprocedure care. With prehabilitation, patients go into surgery much more healthy than they had been previously, and as a result, rehabilitation is much faster. That’s a great example of how a bundled initiative can work, and how it can care for a patient more holistically. Federal agencies are gaining experience with and refining ACOs which will increase the likelihood that ACOs will succeed.

Healthcare informatics is the use of computer technology to solve problems in healthcare, cover management and analysis. It allows long distance patient/ clinician contact and care,

advice, reminders, education, intervention, monitoring and remote admissions. It allows healthcare system integration.

As the population grows and ages, and medical advances are made to prolong life, demands increase on the healthcare system. Healthcare providers are also being asked to do more, with no increase in funding. Patient-centered or outcomes based funding is cutting costs over paying a fee-for-service. When rural settings, lack of transport, lack of mobility (i.e. In the elderly or disabled), decreased funding or lack of staffing restrict access to care, Telehealth can bridge the gap and is on the rise, thanks to mobile devices that offer high performance, tight security and easy application.

The Republicans and the president-elect are not kings or dictators, and really haven’t come in with any significant plan. It is believed that the part of the ACA which people like

will remain. With group plans covering 80-90% of enrollees, it is most likely that changes will occur in that division first, which may benefit employees.

Health savings accounts, high-risk pools and catastrophic health care coverage proves to be a means to get patients more involved with their care and are highly supported by Republicans.

Under any scenario, the idea of a patient-centered continuum of care is at the center. The government can help providers behave differently by the way they pay, but for this all to work, patients are going to have to behave differently, too. Moving forward, they have to be more engaged in their healthcare decisions.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. If everyone followed the Golden Rule (“do unto others…”), association disciplinary hearings would be rare.

Unfortunately, hearing are a necessary, regular, and unpleasant board responsibility. These hearings are governed by Civil Code 5850 and 5855, which establish a simple system. The process begins with a written notice to the homeowner at least ten days before the hearing, informing the homeowner of the date, time, and place of the meeting, the nature of the alleged violation (or the nature of the damage to the common area), and notification that the member may address the board at the meeting. Within 15 calendar days, the association must in writing inform the member of any discipline imposed. The process must be followed, because procedural violations invalidate the disciplinary action (Civil Code 5855(d)).

NOTE – Since 2014, this process must also be

followed when associations seek to charge a member for the cost of repairing common area damage caused by the member (or member’s guest or tenant).

Sometimes “due process” is erroneously invoked regarding HOA hearings. The required “process” is simply that specified in the statute.

So, homeowners do not have the right to be represented by counsel (HOA counsel often also isn’t attending), cross-examine witnesses, confront their accuser, or have a jury of their peers.

These are not public court proceedings, but are private meetings between neighbors addressing a community problem. Homeowner rights in these hearings are what the statute says they are.

Sometimes hearings are canceled because the accused member is unable to attend the hearing, and the board erroneously thinks the member must be present.

The law requires homeowners have an opportunity to attend, not that they must attend. If the member has a legitimate reason for not attending and the issue is not urgent, postponing the

hearing might be a positive good will gesture. However, postponement is not required.

A hearing is necessary before discipline or a reimbursement assessment can be imposed. Some associations send violation notices to owners, with a notification that the owner can demand a hearing.

This is incorrect, because the law requires a hearing, regardless of whether the member demands it. If the member fails to attend or respond, the hearing may be quite short – but it must happen if the board is imposing any discipline.

The association has many options other than fines. It can take an action which is not discipline, such as warning the member, censuring the member, or asking for a meeting. Other disciplinary options include suspending amenity rights, or in gated communities temporarily disabling transponders (forcing the errant owner or owner’s tenant to check in at the guard gate instead).

One myth is that, if a member demands a neighbor be disciplined, the HOA must take action. However, some

complaints are difficult to confirm, and some violations may be technical or minor.

Not every allegation requires HOA action. Some violations may merit a non-disciplinary approach. Remember, the Business Judgment Rule also applies to disciplinary actions. Neighborhood justice should be dispensed calmly, consistently and compassionately.

To reduce hearing myths and mistakes, consider adopting a reasonable hearing policy. That policy can address how the HOA conducts hearings and inform the members called to them, toward a fairer process.

A firm yet fair process helps the credibility of the association governance.

Researchers identify antibody that neutralizes 98% of HIV strains

By Desert Star Staff An antibody from an HIV-infected person has successfully neutralized 98 percent of HIV isolates tested,

including the lion’s share of strains resistant to other antibodies of the same class, US scientists have found.

The striking efficiency of

the powerful antibody, named N6, makes it an ideal candidate for further research to treat or prevent HIV infection, scientists from the National Institutes of Health, the largest biomedical research agency in the world, have stated.Scientists scrutinized the evolution of N6 over time to understand how exactly it managed to develop the ability to potently neutralize the majority of HIV strains.

Researchers say that identifying broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV has been a real challenge because the virus rapidly changes its surface proteins to avoid recognition by the immune system.

In 2010, scientists at National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID’s) Vaccine Research Center (VRC) discovered an antibody called VRC01

Neuroscientists now hope the brain-spine interface could help immobile human patients too.

Neuroscientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) developed a technology which allows the sending of signals from the brain to the muscles bypassing the damaged part of the spinal cord.By adding a wireless brain implant and electrodes in the primates’ spinal cord, scientists enabled monkeys with spinal cord injuries to walk again, research published in the journal Nature showed.

“We developed an implantable, wireless system that operates in real-time and enabled a primate

to behave freely, without the constraint of tethered electronics,” neuroscientist Gregoire Courtine who led the experiment said, as quoted by Reuters.

The scientist, who treated two monkeys in China, each with one leg paralyzed by a partial spinal cord lesion, explained that he and his team got to understand “how to extract brain signals that encode flexion and extension movements of the leg with a mathematical algorithm.”

They then linked the decoded signals associated with leg movement to particular key points in the lower part of the spine, below the injury. Devices receiving a wireless signal from the brain then generate electrical pulses that activate leg muscles into motion.

With the wireless brain implant in place, both monkeys

partially regained the use of their paralyzed legs within two weeks of sustaining their injury, without any special training.

“They have demonstrated that the animals can regain not only coordinated but also weight-bearing function, which is important for locomotion.

This is great work,” the Nature quoted neuroscientist Gaurav Sharma as saying.Independent experts not directly involved in the work said it was an important step towards a potential treatment for immobile people, Reuters reported.

“In principle this is reproducible in human patients,” a specialist in restorative neuroscience at Imperial College London, Simone Di Giovanni said, adding that the results his Swiss colleagues achieved are “solid, very promising and exciting.”

According to UNAIDS, there were approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2015. Of these, 1.8 million were children younger than 15 years old. The vast majority of people living with HIV are from low- and middle-income countries.

Indian Canyons unveiled newly landscaped neighborhood

Located at the corner of Camino Real and LaVerne Way in Palm Springs, this project was fully funded by proceeds ICNO raised by hosting its popular home tours during Modernism Week in 2015 and 2016. CA Works to Protect Youth Sex Trafficking Victims in Crisis

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES -California is home to three of the top 13 hot spots for child sex trafficking: Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. Now LA and Long Beach are launching a new “Safe Youth Zone” to help young victims escape.

On Tuesday, officials launched a pilot program that prepares police and fire stations to care for a young person who is running from his or her sex trafficker. Michelle Guymon, director at the Los Angeles Probation Department, said this program refocuses previous safe house efforts to specifically reach out to kids in trafficking situations.

“It’s force that literally keeps them stuck. And so when kids try to escape that, the level of desperation does escalate,” Guymon said. “And

so they’re looking for that safe place where they can get some support and help.”

The program will likely be enlarged to eventually include hospitals as well. A large yellow sticker will be displayed on the front door of each facility identifying it as a safe youth zone. Once a young person seeks refuge in one of these locations, a team will be called in to find the child a place to stay and connect him or her with counseling and other services.

Law enforcement will begin promoting the safe youth zone program in schools, in the foster system, in youth shelters and in juvenile hall, Guymon said. More than 130 kids in the Los Angeles area in 2015 said they had been trafficked for sex.

“Kids have not been arrested for prostitution but are disclosing that this is

happening,” Guymon said; “because we’re more sensitive than I think we used to be when we labeled them as

teenage prostitutes, which was not a sensitive way to really approach the issue.”

While Sanders released a statement in the wake of Trump’s victory that explained the businessman’s popularity and promised to fight him on any “racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies,” he told the AP he isn’t betting on the president-elect fulfilling campaign promises made to the working class voters.

“I hope I’m wrong, but I believe that he is a fraud, and I

think despite all of his rhetoric about being a champion of the working class, it will turn out to be hollow,” he said.

Sanders and other progressive Democrats such as Elizabeth Warren have called for a reevaluation of the Democratic party and its message in light of the unexpected Trump win and Republicans retaining both the House and the Senate.

“Working families across this country are deeply frustrated about an economy and a government that doesn’t work for them,” Warren explained on Thursday. “We will fight back against attacks on Latinos, African-Americans, women, Muslims, immigrants, disabled Americans — on anyone. Whether Donald Trump sits in a glass tower or sits in the White House, we will not give an inch on this, not now, not ever.”

Now that franchise has come to a close, but the good news is that before there was a Harry Potter there was a Magizoologist named Newt Scamander who wrote “Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them,” one of Harry Potter’s textbooks at Hogwarts.

The show opens Saturday, November 12 at St. Joseph Church in Yucca Valley.

Jennifer Connelly On “American Pastoral” & Being A Working Mom

Jennifer Connelly is not only one of the world’s most beautiful women, she is an accomplished, hard working actor racking up a list of impressive credits.

Her sensitive work as Alicia Nash in Ron Howard’s “A Beautiful Mind,” in which she co-starred with Russell Crowe, won her an Academy Award, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA awards.

Born in Brooklyn to an Irish and Norwegian father and an Ashkenazi Jewish mother, her career in show business began as a child model and was featured in magazine, newspaper, and television advertising. While continuing her modeling career, she made her film debut in “Once Upon a Time in America.” Since then, she has had starring roles in such films as, ”Labyrinth,” “Seven Minutes in Heaven,” “Étoile,” “The Rocketeer,” “Mulholland Falls,” “Dark City,” “Waking the Dead,” “Requiem for a Dream,” “Pollock,” “Hulk,” “Blood Diamond,” “House of Sand and Fog,” “Reservation Road,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “Salvation Boulevard,” and “Winter’s Tale.” Connelly is married to Paul Bettany, lives in New York and has three children.

Connelly’s latest film is “American Pastoral,” in which she co-stars with Ewan McGregor who makes his directing debut in this film based on Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

She plays McGregor’s wife Dawn Levov to his character of Seymour “Swede” Levov.

The story centers around an American family who has its comfortable middleclass life shattered when their daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) becomes an antiwar activist and commits an act of terror with irrevocable consequences. While dad becomes obsessed with reconnecting with his daughter who has gone underground, Dawn struggles to maintain her sanity and eventually drifts off into a new reality, which she carefully creates. The film co-stars David Strathairn, Peter Riegert, Rupert Evans, Uzo Aduba, and Rita Cohen.

A most lovely Connelly recently sat down with a group of select journalists and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

What drew you to wanting to play the character of Dawn Levov?

Connelly: I was very moved by her as a character.

I had enormous compassion for her and I loved what I read in the novel. I really am a fan of the book and I tried to, as much as I could, to honor the book and what I understood about Dawn.

Why do you think Dawn falls apart after her daughter disappears?

Connelly: She’s someone who struggles to find purpose in life and to have a sense of her own meaning and her value in a way that’s more authentic than just her looks. I think that she finds that in her relationship with her husband and her daughter and finds it excruciating when Merry rejects her. I think it’s very destabilizing and makes her doubt herself. I also think she’s very different from Seymour who really avoids confrontation. I also think that she experiences very viscerally her daughter’s rejection and her loss. She grieves very differently and literally cannot survive the experience. She’s completely dismantled and because she’s so undone, goes about tearing down everything that’s left standing This is not the only time you’ve worked with a firsttime director. How was Ewan McGregor as the director and your co-star?

Connelly: It was very comfortable. First we had private rehearsals in the morning before we would start shooting. He always had ideas about how he would shoot a scene, but he never wanted to make definitive decisions until he had seen the actors do the scene. If it were just Ewan and I in a scene together, it would literally be just the two of us in a room. We would close the door and we would try some blocking, rehearse the scene, and put it on its feet. So we would do that and show it to the crew and make final decisions on how they would cover it. Then we would shoot the scene and generally after the first take he would look at the monitor, watch the playback and see how he felt about it and maybe make some adjustments. After that, we’d do the scene together and he wouldn’t go back and forth to the monitor. It felt pretty fluid.

It seems like so much fell on “Swede.” Did you feel bad for him?

Connelly: I felt bad for him, but I felt bad for her too.

Frankly, if you look at it from another point of view, which I did, I feel bad for all of the characters as they all struggle

and grieve in their own way.

But because of the way he handles things, he’s kind of stuck in the past and he’s not with Dawn – they’re not together any more because he’s still living in this fantasy that doesn’t exist and she can’t survive holding onto that fantasy. So I really feel for her when she has that scene toward the end of the movie when she’s says, “When are you going to give up on her?” What I think she’s really saying is when are you going to be here with me, because I’m fucking being left again.

She’s alone and I think it’s just pain and sadness. So yes. I feel badly for him, but I also feel badly for her.

I have compassion for Dawn just as a human being and certainly can’t fathom anything worse than losing a child.

Did you have a souvenir from “Labyrinth”?

Connelly: I had some photographs but unfortunately they were lost. My parents had some of my stuff in a storage facility, which caught fire.

By Pamela Price A fashionable parade of desert personalities attended a chic afternoon event staged at the Palm Springs residence of Steve and Joelle Stanbridge on Sunday, November 13th. This event—the third annual—was presented by the Fashion Group International of Palm Springs and Desert Communities, Inc. A panoply of pink dazzled guests as they entered and gazed off to the right viewing, a glamorous rectangular swimming pool filled with floating rose colored

and white balloons. It was a site to behold with over ninety guests dressed to the nines, in plaids, prints and with bursts of salmon pink everywhere. Laurie Weitz, Palm Springs designer known for dramatic fashion statements, from handbags to her vivacious vintage jewelry collection, stole the show. That was until David Parker, of the Body Deli on El Paseo in Palm Desert, walked in with stunning designer Wamuhu Wawer.

It also launched the winter edition of Palm Springs Art Patron Magazine. The event was held on November 14th at the Rose and Russell home in Palm Springs.

Local Artist Phillip K. Smith III graces the cover of the new Palm Springs Art Patron Magazine with stories and pictures of his art on the inside of the magazine. The magazine dedicated 12 pages to his art in full color. Smith explains in the stories about his rise to

success. He tells of how he found his passion for this type of art and his experiments with light and objects. Smith found so many exclusive buildings and amazing landscapes to make his Art so overwhelming and unique.

His project is called, Lucid Stead, and has become well received by all art collectors.

Smith said it took 13 years to become an overnight success as he described his career in the magazine. He took simple items and made them beautiful with the lighting and color that show his artistic talents. The cocktail party was visited by many local art lovers, and each guest received the newest edition of the Magazine.

THE SANTALAND DIARIES is based on the true chronicles of NPR humorist David Sedaris’ experience as Crumpet the Elf in Macy’s Santaland display.

This Christmas classic riffs on a few of Sedaris’ truly odd encounters with his fellow man during the height of the holiday crunch. It’s not your usual Christmas memories….a very funny and very real glimpse into the workaday world of Santa’s Helpers! Not really for children.

The production features Chris Clonts as “Crumpet, The Elf”. Jim Strait directs and designs the production with costumes by Robbie Wayne and lighting designed by Phil Murphy.

The eclectic guest list had one thing in common, their mutual interest in the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

As guests entered they were greeted by four friendly dogs, each seeking a loving home.

Shelter volunteers, John Burke, Eric Wildermuth, Kevin Andrews, Anthony Ercolani and Gier Ness were on hand to answer questions about dog adoptions. A luncheon created by New Leaf Catering

in Cathedral City, was pitch perfect. Catlin Burkett Crist, operations manager, presented an irresistible menu that included halibut with parmesan accentuated with roasted bread crumbs.

We didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes since the nonstop parade of stunning designer shoes, such as Michael Bonda’s custom orange suede creations by desert designer Debra Hovel were such a scene stealers.

Catching the eye of Hollywood publicist, Tony Turk was seen

with Bobbie Eakes admiring a parade of gift baskets on the show as guests entered. Jack Williams, Regional Director of The Fashion Group of the Desert said he estimated around $7,000 would be raised for the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Tables decorated in pink surrounded the swimming pool, all positioned for ideal views of the event’s captivating fashion show.

Lord & Taylor Unveil 2016 Holiday Windows: Enchanted Forest

By Desert Star Staff Lord & Taylor unveiled its 79th annual world-renowned holiday windows to New York City on Thursday, November 10 with a grand event in partnership with Save the Children and exciting performance by breakout musician Daya.

This year, Lord & Taylor’s Enchanted Forest holiday windows take customers on a whimsical winter journey.

The five windows flanking Fifth Avenue have been transformed, portraying scenes of a winter wonderland filled with 34 hand-sculpted spirited holiday animals. Over 350 square feet of LED walls enhance each vignette. The flagship’s façade features more than 9,000 feet of mixed garland, foliage, twinkling lights and cheerful holiday music, completing the magical display.

World premiere musical at La Jolla Playhouse

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The La Jolla Playhouse has a successful track record of sending its musical productions to Broadway and has a penchant for winning Tony Awards in the process. “Memphis” (2010), for one, springs to mind; the Best Musical Tony-winner was brilliantly performed and brilliantly directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Chris Ashley.

However, I’m not quite sure that the current World Premiere production “Miss You Like Hell” will find Broadway producers bold enough to challenge the bias against Southern Californiaset musicals, especially one revolving around Latinos. It would be a pity for our East Coast theatrical cousins and their patrons to miss it, as well as those audiences in regional

theatres across the country.

The world has been devolving into dangerous and uncertain times since the turn of the 21st Century. Instead of becoming more inclusive as a society, the world appears to be increasingly more interested in becoming rabidly isolationist, even nationalistic.

Playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes, a 2008 Tony Winner for the musical “In the Heights” and a 2010 Pulitzer Prize Winner for her potent and powerful drama “Water by the Spoonful”. She has once again hit the nail on the proverbial head with her musical “Miss You Like Hell”, creatively and deftly directed by talented Lear deBessonet.

The leit-motif running through many of Ms. Hudes’ plays deal with loss and forgiveness. In the case of “Miss You like Hell”, it’s a poignant story of mother abandonment and daughter

estrangement and the coming to grips with forgiveness, and how hard it is to resolve it.

Ms. deBessonet is fortunate to have the services of casting directors Kaitlin Shaw and Tara Rubin, who have assembled a terrific ensemble cast of solid actors/singer/dancers to bring this timeless story to life. This time, the story of troubled mother Beatriz, sensationally played by Daphne RubinVega, and her daughter Olivia, wonderfully sung and portrayed

by Krystina Alabado, is set against the backdrop of Latino culture which is rich in mysticism and the myths of earlier native ancestors and story tellers.

Additionally, the libretto has elements that are reminiscent of the writings of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his style of ‘magical realism’ and shards of the poems of famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

The musical informs the story that illuminates the culture wars now taking place, not only in America, but also in Europe and across the globe. Ensemble casts are the epitome of what musical productions are all about. These actors are there to enhance the performances of the principals, namely Ms. Rubin-Vega and Ms. Alabado.

But these dedicated, talented performers also shine in individual performances and should be acknowledged.

In alphabetical order the ensemble cast includes: Cliff Bemis as Mo; Victor Chan as Castaway; Vanessa A. Jones as Lawyer/Waitress; David Patrick Kelly as Higgins; Julio Monge as Manuel; Cashae

Monya as Pearl; Kurt Norby as Officer/Legal Clerk/A Guy at the Motel Desk; and Olivia Oguma as Mindy.

The creative team led

by Ms. DeBessonet greatly benefits from the inventive set designs of Donyale Werle and the sparkling creative costume designs of Emilio Sosa that help sweep the audience along to the beats of ‘south of the border’ music and lyrics.

In addition to Ms. Hudes’ libretto and lyrics, and Erin McKeown’s music and lyrics, the choreography of Danny Mefford enlivens the stage action under the baton of music director Julie McBride, with sound design

by Dan Moses Schreier.

This splendid production performs at the La Jolla Playhouse in the Mandell Weiss Theatre, through December 4, 2016. Don’t miss It!
