The Palm Springs Women in Film and Television, PSWIFT luncheon is held to honor women who have broken the glass ceiling in the entertainment industry. They pay tribute to these women who have paved the way for others in the industry to follow.

These women are considered Pioneers who have made a name for themselves in the industry. These extraordinary honored women have been chosen for their commitment, dedication, and success in film, television, the arts, and also philanthropy.

There was a reception and silent auction before a delicious

lunch. The founder and president of PSWIFT, Leanna Bonamici, gave a speech welcoming all the guests and thanked them for their support.

Leanna introduced the Broken Glass Awards co-chairs, Kim Waltrip, Patti Gribow, and Kate Spates. This year’s hosts were actors, John Callahan, and TV personality Karen Devine.

New this year was the Denise DuBarry Hay Scholarship award. Denise was a huge part of PSWIFT for years as she was an actress, producer, visionary, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a great friend to many and will be greatly missed.

She passed away this year but was remembered by PSWIFT by serving as a board member and president for over 12 years. A $1000

The celebrated author of over a hundred books where many have been made into films, Andrew Neiderman, was the next presenter to his daughter, Melissa Neiderman.

Melissa was awarded the Humanitarian Award for her advancement to the arts thru her works for many charities as event chair, her leadership, volunteerism, and efforts raising funds for local charities.

The next award presented was to Delores Robinson by her daughter Holley Robinson Peete. Dolores was given the Broken Glass Award because she has achieved great success in Hollywood and the Entertainment industry.

The final award was the Gena Award by actress Gena Rowlands. The award is given to someone who

has shown great artistry and is admired worldwide. That award went to actress Virginia G. Madsen who has starred in countless films and has garnered nominations for the Oscars and Golden Globes along with other awards during her career. PSWIFTs mission to empower, promote, and nurture men and women in Media, Entertainment, Communication, and Still Photography to our valley.

PSWIFT provides support to local educational programs for students in the entertainment fields.

They are also big supporters of the BookPALS literacy program that reaches 2.200 children each week. They applauded Terri Briton for 12 years of service to BookPals.

routine tasks. This avoided payroll tax withholding and other legal obligations.

All that began to change in 2018 with a California Supreme Court case called Dynamex v.

Superior Court, in which the traditional test of employment vs. independent contractor was replaced with a simple 3-part test, often called the “ABC” test. That ruling was incorporated in Assembly Bill (AB) 5, which was quickly signed by the Governor after passing the Legislature. AB 5 creates a new Labor Code Section 2750.3 and affects any hirer, including HOAs, using “independent contractors” which might be reclassified as “employees.” This new statute adopts the “ABC” test, which determines a worker as an independent contractor if: A) The hirer actually and contractually does not control or direct the person in the course of their work; B) The work performed is outside the hirer’s normal business; and C) The worker also normally and independently performs that work for others.

If the hired person meets all of those three requirements, they can be treated as an independent contractor.

As before, the element of control over how the person performs their work is key.

Some HOA service providers are expressly exempted from the law, such as attorneys, architects, engineers, and accountants.

The more concerning area for associations is hired persons working on the HOA property and paid by the HOA. One example of an independent contractor would be the plumber who is called to come fix a leak. The plumber is not supervised or told how to perform the repair. The plumber normally works for others as well, and the HOA’s business is not plumbing.

On the other hand, a less clear answer might apply to maintenance or janitorial workers paid by the HOA. Such workers often are given direction by the manager or board. Furthermore, since the HOA’s job is to maintain the common area, isn’t general property maintenance and cleaning part of the HOA’s “business?”

The conversion of workers to employee status may create

sick leave and other obligations for the HOA, including payroll withholding duties. An employee might try to contest their termination, or allege discrimination. Also, employees are subject to Fair Employment and wage and hour laws.

Associations should obtain advice from their insurance broker regarding workers compensation coverage.

There will be public resources educating HOAs and managers on the difference between employee vs. independent contractor status.

The California Department of Industrial Relations is developing a pertinent web page, but it unfortunately is not ready at present time (www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/ faq_independentcontractor. htm). The California Chamber of Commerce has information available at

www.calchamber.com.

Managers and their boards should be aware of the simpler standard and avoid erroneously calling workers “independent contractors” if the law does not support that status. Also, remember that personnel (employees) discussions are for closed session, while independent contractors are vendors and should be discussed in open session.

Google sucks up & analyzes healthcare data on millions of Americans

By Desert Star Staff Google has teamed up with one of the largest health providers in the US to gather detailed medical records on millions of patients across the country without their knowledge, in a secret project the firm tried to keep under wraps.

Dubbed “Project Nightingale,” the secretive program brought together Google and healthcare giant Ascension to collect medical records on patients across 21 states, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The data sharing began last year and has only accelerated in recent months.

At least 150 employees at Google’s Cloud division now have access to the bulk of the data, which amounts to information on tens of millions of patients, according to a source familiar with the records. The details shared include patient names and dates of birth, hospitalization records, lab results, and doctor diagnoses, which together provide a complete medical history for many of the patients – all without their consent.

Google says it hopes to use the data to develop an application employing AI and machine learning to track patients

and recommend treatments, and ultimately has its eye on creating a search engine that can aggregate disparate patient data in one place. While Google is carrying out its research totally free of charge, presumably for the greater good, the multi-billiondollar corporation is unlikely to miss its chance to monetize the service once health providers around the world are hooked up. Many found Google’s initiative disconcerting, even more so due to the guise of noble and altruistic intentions.

“Wow – this is downright alarming. Do you trust Google with your blood test results, diagnoses, sensitive health information?” asked the attorney and Republican National Committee member Harmeet K. Dhillon in a tweet. “Google’s secret ‘Project Nightingale’ gathers personal health data on millions of Americans.”

The company launched Google Health in 2008 but shuttered it less than four years later after failing to persuade enough users to hand over their medical records willingly, perhaps uncomfortable with the firm having access to such sensitive information. The tech giant has since cut individual November 13, 2019

consent out of its quest to amass healthcare data, going over the heads of patients to make deals with health providers instead.

In September, the company allied with the Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic to provide cloud services and data analytics in a 10-year “strategic partnership,” which will give Google access to data on up to 1 million patients at the clinic each year.

In another mass data grab earlier this month, the company purchased the maker of the fitness tracking device Fitbit, gobbling up the data of some 28 million active users of the gadget. The data goes beyond simple fitness tracking, such as the number of steps one takes per day, as some users opt to link the device to additional medical or insurance records.

While Google vowed to never hand out the Fitbit information to third parties, customers may still have reason to be skeptical about the integrity of their data.

Over the summer, Google and another partnered healthcare facility, the University of Chicago Medical Center, came under fire in a lawsuit alleging the hospital gave Google medical records on hundreds of thousands of patients without stripping them

of identifying information. The case mirrored a similar mishap across the pond in 2017, in which the UK’s National Health Service passed the company data on 1.6 million patients in violation of privacy laws.

The secretive data sharing between Ascension and Google is absolutely legal under US federal law, both companies said, insisting that all necessary safeguards to protect patient privacy are in place – as if it ever stopped data leaks. The 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPA) Act allows hospitals and other healthcare providers to pass data to business partners without informing patients so long as it “help[s] the covered entity carry out its health care functions.”

Ascension – a network of some 2,600 hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other medical facilities – says it’s doing just that, seeking to use the data to improve care and identify additional tests patients might need. However, documents reviewed by the Journal also suggest the company, like Google, has its bottom line in mind, hoping to use the data-mining to generate more revenue as well.

5 Pro Tips to Prep Homes for Winter

By Desert Star Staff Before blustery winter days arrive, there are plenty of home improvement projects contractors can tackle for homeowners. Many cooler weather projects focus on cost efficiency and sustainability, making the improvements all around smart investments.

Winter is the perfect time to implement upgrades that boost energy efficiency and lower heating bills, helping

to manage household costs while improving comfort and enjoyment of the home. Consider these practical upgrade ideas.

Add insulation. Depending on the age of the home, improving the quality or increasing the volume of insulation can make a difference in the home’s energy efficiency. An expert can determine whether old insulation needs to be

removed or new insulation should simply be added. A contractor can examine the home to determine where there may be gaps, as well as provide recommendations on the type and amount of insulation needed.

Seal air leaks. Air leaks can cause chilly drafts, contribute to frozen pipes and lead to energy loss. Eliminating leaks is an important aspect of winterizing any home, but not

all leaks are easily identified.

A skilled contractor can scour the home, checking unknown areas like basement throughwall penetrations, sill plates and the tops of concrete walls. Interior features like light receptacles and outlets are also common sources of air leakage. The caulking around windows and doors is another common culprit to be examined by an expert.

Cracked trim around doors and windows leads to air leaks, and sometimes homeowners think the only solution is replacing windows and doors, but they still end up with drafts. Contractors can periodically replace trim using foam sealant to help eliminate inevitable drafts and save homeowners money in the long run – a more costeffective approach than paying for new windows and doors.

Prevent ice dams. Snowcovered roofs and freezing weather can lead to ice dams – thick ridges of solid ice that build up in gutters and along eaves. Dams can damage gutters and shingles and cause water to back up, which could force the water inside where it can peel paint, warp floors and lead to stained or sagging ceilings. To prevent damming, have a professional clear your gutters of leaves and debris ahead of the first snow and consider installing gutter guards to help prevent melting snow from refreezing in gutters.

Fraud Expert: Become Smarter, Wiser to Avoid Scams

By Desert Star Staff The holiday season provides ample opportunities for con artists to prowl for unsuspecting victims, and a world-renowned expert on identity theft has crucial advice to help Minnesotans avoid becoming prey.

Frank Abagnale is a reformed con artist who was depicted by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2002 movie “Catch Me if You Can.” His number-one tip to avoid a scam is to get educated.

“I tell people every day, you can’t rely on the bank, you can’t rely on the police, you can’t rely on the government. This is not 25 years ago,” Abagnale said. “You have to be a little smarter today. You have to be a little wiser and learn to protect yourself.’”

Abagnale has advised the FBI and businesses on how to outsmart con artists for more than four decades, and now shares his unique expertise as an AARP Fraud Watch Network Ambassador. At an event in Rochester last week, he highlighted the two biggest red flags to identify a scam: if the person asks for money and demands it immediately; or if someone requests personal information such as a Social Security number or bank account number.

Abagnale suggests putting a freeze on your credit, and using a credit card for purchases instead of a debit card.

“So if someone were to get my card, charge a million dollars on it, by federal law I am not liable for one dime,” he explained. “When you use a debit card, every time you reach for it you’re exposing the money in your account.

So when they steal the money, they’re stealing your money.”

Abagnale said every day he hears stories of people who become victimized, and lose tens of thousands of dollars - sometimes even their pensions or their homes. And, he added, fraudsters have no qualms about what they do.

“Years ago, the scam artists had to meet you personally; they had to build a relationship,” he said. “The scam artists today are sitting in their pajamas with a cup of coffee in their kitchen with their laptop thousands of miles away. They’re never going to see you, you’re never going to see them. They have no compassion and they will steal every dime you have.”

College Staff Celebrates Hard-Won Victory at CA Supreme Court

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A victory in court for workers at Antelope Valley Community College could have major statewide implications.

Workers challenged a district decision to change their work schedules without having them vote on it as outlined in their contract.

Relations Board ruled against the district – and this week, the State Supreme Court let that decision stand.

of Teachers, hopes this will encourage colleges to respect the rights of the people who serve the students, day in and day out.

“It can set a precedent throughout the state about back pay and the abuse of wages and benefits for your secretaries, your janitors, your transportation specialists,” says Freitas.

The change meant that five years ago, people went from working five days a week to four longer days plus a half-day Friday – the same number of hours overall, but no overtime pay on the longer days. Now, Antelope Valley College will have to pay them an estimated $1.5 million in back overtime.

Betsy Sanchez, a college spokesperson, argues that because the work schedules did not exceed 40 hours, no overtime was required.

Pamela Ford – president of the Antelope Valley College Federation of Classified Employees, Local 4683 – says the case affirms the value of workers standing together.

“If there was no collective bargaining, then we would not have had any say in our work hours, and the president could have just done whatever he wanted,” says Ford. “But collective bargaining is what gives employees’ rights within the workplace.”

Sanchez also notes many employees chose alternative schedules during the 90-day period before the change took effect.

Draft Plan for Green Transportation Draws Praise

By Desert Star Staff The draft of a policy proposal for a regional effort to switch to electric vehicles is getting strong support from clean-energy advocates.

Building on the success of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative in reducing emissions from the electric power sector, 13 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states have now outlined their plans to reduce emissions from transportation - now the greatest source of greenhouse-gas emissions.

According to Anne Reynolds, executive director of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, the plan would set a cap on emissions and require wholesalers of gas and diesel fuel to buy allowances to cover upto that level of pollution.

“Over time, that cap would be reduced,” Reynolds explained. “And that would be a way to generate some revenue that can be reinvested

in electric vehicle charging and electric vehicle incentives.”

The Transportation and Climate Initiative expects to release a final draft of a memorandum of understanding in spring 2020 for consideration by the participating states.

Reynolds added the plan also has a strong emphasis on equity, ensuring the benefits of clean transportation are shared by low-income communities and those most vulnerable to a changing climate.

“Not everyone has their own personal car. Not everyone wants or can afford a Tesla,” she said. “But we can get electric school buses, city buses, dump trucks, and that would help clear the air in places that need it.”

EPA Proposal Would Weaken Clean Water Act

some coal-fired power plants to keep polluting at current levels for years.

There are about 460,000 family caregivers in Oregon, providing care worth nearly $6 billion a year, according to AARP Oregon.

In doing this loving work, Vicki Schmall, an AARP Oregon volunteer and former Oregon State University professor of gerontology, says caregivers often neglect their own health.

She says if anybody knows a caregiver, reach out to see what he or she needs, and offer support or encouragement to get it from others.

“Finding out where they could really use the help,” Schmall explains. “It may be as simple as getting groceries for them, or the importance of having a weekly

break where they can just get out of the home and do something that’s relaxing and enjoyable for them, even if it’s for a couple of hours.”

An AARP survey of Oregonians 40 and older finds nearly half are current or former caregivers and that caregivers provide a range of support, including transportation, meal preparation and complex medical tasks.

Schmall says respite care is available for Oregonians who need a break from their duties.

She also notes that disease awareness organizations, such as the Alzheimer’s Association, have support groups that bring together folks who understand the struggles of caregiving.

“Plus, caregivers often receive support, and a caregiver who may have been through a similar situation will be able to help you deal with a situation that you

Schuster, senior campaign representative with the Sierra Club, without the proposed changes, all of the power plants in the Allegheny River watershed would have to comply with the Obamaera standards by 2023.

“You’re going to end up seeing more pollution from coal ash allowed to be dumped into the water that ultimately feeds our drinking water systems there,” Schuster said.

The EPA has said the changes would save the power industry $175 million per year and reduce pollutants discharged into waterways by 100 million pounds per year.

But Schuster pointed out that under the 2015 rules, 100% of the water used to move the bottom ash left by coal burned in power plants would have to be recycled.

“Now they’re going to be allowed to dump 10% of water that’s used to move

that ash directly into the river every day, without regard for what is in that water after it contacts the ash,” he said.

Bottom ash contains heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, chromium and lead as well as other toxins.

Once the proposed rule is published, there will be a 60-day public comment period. Schuster said the EPA will hold one public hearing on December 19 - just a few days before Christmas.

“They’re not necessarily making it easy for people to voice their opinion on this rule, but we’re definitely going to be challenging it and, if necessary, we’ll fight it in the courts,” he said.

In 2018, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection updated waterpollution permits for most coal plants in the Commonwealth to include the Obama-era rules.

Future of Natural Parks Up to Land and Water Conservation Fund

By Desert Star Staff Congress is considering a bill that would secure permanent and full federal funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), a pot of money from offshore oil revenues used to protect the country’s natural parks.

Mike Butler, CEO of the Tennessee Wildlife Federation, says over the past 50 years, around $200 million from LWCF have gone toward helping Tennesseans conserve the state’s natural gems.

“That’s gone towards hiking and biking trails,

ball fields, hunting access, historical battlefield sites, wildlife refuges and other public land acquisitions like the Appalachian Trail,” he points out.

Butler notes that while the fund is supposed to receive $900 million a year, only twice has Congress fully appropriated that amount.

The measure is headed toward a committee vote on Nov. 19.

It’s not just about natural beauty. Butler says protecting the state’s wildlife areas, parks and outdoor recreation

spaces are valuable for Tennessee’s economy.

“They fuel about a $21 billion outdoor recreational economy in Tennessee supporting about 200,000 jobs, based on the research that we’ve seen,” he stresses.

Butler also adds in the face of a changing climate, natural areas, which do not require expensive maintenance or technologies, are the best buffer against the effects of climate change.

“And so, as we look to try to protect land, or put it into a public ownership category, November 13, 2019

we think that those things can be done strategically, where they have a lot of public support, and can create a lot of public benefit,” he states.

A study published earlier this year found that between

2001 and 2017, a total of 24 million acres, roughly equivalent to nine Grand Canyon National Parks or 49 Great Smoky Mountain National Parks, were lost to development in the U.S.

Honoring “Invisible” Veterans

By Desert Star Staff Veterans Day parades, ceremonies and service projects are taking place across the state to honor those who have served. And some of Ohio’s so-called invisible veterans may soon have their own observance.

A bill on Gov. Mike Dewine’s desk would designate June 12 as Women Veterans’ Day, to pay tribute to the 67,000 female veterans living in Ohio.

Angela Beltz is an Operation Desert Storm veteran and Chair of the Ohio Women Veterans Advisory Committee. She said women have played key roles in the military since its inception, yet their contributions often are overlooked.

“We’ve always been there; we’ve always served. It’s only been 75 years last year when they were able to serve in the military officially,” Beltz said.

“So now we have all these females breaking these glass ceilings. We have women in Ranger school; not only are they going, they’re doing just

as well as their counterparts.”

Senate Bill 77 passed both the Senate and House without opposition.

A 2017 report from the Department of Veterans Affairs noted it wasn’t until decades after World War II that women who served in the military began to be officially recognized as veterans. However, many still struggled to access services and benefits.

And Beltz said social and cultural norms often discouraged women from discussing their military service.

“One of the things that we hear a lot, especially from our Vietnam-era and our Korean War veterans, they say, ‘Well, I didn’t know I was a veteran; nobody ever said I was a veteran.’ And that’s sad,” she said. “We just need to keep finding them.”

Beltz said she’s appreciative that Ohio already is a veteran-friendly state, and she believes all veterans and service members

about 9% to 16% by 2042.

Library of Congress Urges Communities to Collect Veterans’ Stories

By Desert Star Staff As veterans are celebrated today across New Hampshire and the nation, the director of the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project is encouraging people to collect the first-person narratives of the military veterans in their families and neighborhoods.

Project Director Karen Lloyd, herself a retired U.S.

Army colonel, said the oral history collection preserves recorded interviews of veterans who served in World War I and onward.

“We collect not just oral histories, we also collect photographs and letters, and memoirs and diaries, and two-degree artwork, because all of those are reflections of a veteran’s service. And

everyone chooses to reflect different ways,” Lloyd said.

Congress created the Veterans History Project in 2000. Listeners can visit LoC.gov/vets to access the searchable database, as well as download a how-to field kit to submit the a veteran’s story.

Lloyd said you don’t have to be an expert to listen to a veteran and

record their life story.

“Anybody can do this.

You just have to be interested and listen - really listen - to the veterans in your life, in your community,” she said.

She added it’s important to make veterans’ firsthand accounts accessible for future generations.

“And we would ask that volunteers reach out to those

local veterans and consider donating those stories, and those photographs and those letters, here to the Library of Congress,” she said.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, more than 100,000 veterans live in New Hampshire. More than 30% of those veterans served in Vietnam.

Veterans Day Comes with a Warning About Fraud

By Desert Star Staff Military veterans are gathering across the country for ceremonies that honor their service, but scam artists may use the occasion to rob veterans of their savings.

survey, 16% of U.S. military veterans have lost money to fraudsters, while 72% have been targeted by scams specifically designed to exploit the veterans’ service history.

Leah Ganschow, associate state director of

communications and outreach for AARP South Dakota, says the scammers tend to be opportunists, and may use today’s holiday to contact veterans asking for donations to nonexistent charities.

likely to lose money to a scam as someone in the civilian population is, because of the benefits they have fought so hard to earn, fraudsters know that that is of value,” she explains.

On Tuesday South Dakota attorney general Jason Ravnsborg joins AARP for a telephone town hall to hear from residents, including veterans, about scams they’ve experienced and answer questions about fraud.

The 2 p.m. (CDT) call goes out to AARP members who have opted in, but anyone is welcome on the call. More information is online at aarp.org/sd.

To avoid being scammed, Ganschow says it’s important to know that federal agencies, such as the Social Security Administration, always contact people by mail – not by phone.

She notes that after one veteran had money withdrawn from his bank account without permission, AARP and the U.S. Postal

Inspection Service launched Operation Protect Veterans to keep track of schemes and scams and pinpoint which states are being targeted.

“On our website – on AARP.org/fraudwatchnetwork – we have a scam-tracking map, which allows people to report scams that they are experiencing, and it allows us to upload data about the latest scams that are being reported,” she states.

AARP also hosts free luncheons this week in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen to give people specific information about fraud. Times and locations are listed on the AARP South Dakota website.

Life From a Dog’s Point of View

In the film “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” Actor Kevin Coster is the voice for a thoughtful golden retriever named Enzo owned by the race car driver, Denny (Milo Ventimiglia, “This Is Us”).

Milo buys the dog when he is a puppy, naming him Enzo after the legendary auto designer Enzo Ferrari. The two bond immediately.

Enzo enjoys watching TV with Denny. As the story begins, Enzo is fascinated by a TV documentary about Mongolia, where they believe that dogs will be reincarnated as humans after they die.

At this point, Enzo is sure that someday he too will be a human being just like his beloved owner Denny.

The film, based on Garth Stein’s best selling novel, stars Milo Ventimiglia as Denny and Amanda Seyfried (“Mama Mia”) as his devoted wife Eve, who is proud of his racing ambitions. She is supportive, but that is not the case with her parents, played by Kathy Baker

and Martin Donovan. Dad disapproves of their marriage from the start, believing his daughter could do far better.

Fortunately, mom is more understanding and supportive.

When they meet, Denny is immediately smitten with Eve, a young grade school teacher. This is not the case with Enzo, who is jealous at first. However, he learns to love her, and when their little daughter is born, it is love at first sight for this faithful dog.

Even though Denny’s career involves time apart, Eve encourages him to continue racing. She knows how much he loves what he does, and she wants him to be happy.

She is his biggest fan.

While Denny is away, she takes good care of Enzo. They spend time together and go on long walks in the woods.

When she starts having headaches, it is Enzo who instinctively realizes something is wrong, but he has no way to tell her. Sadly he must wait for his humans to take

action before it is too late.

“The Art of Racing in the Rain” is not only a drama about love and loss, but it is also a dog story with many comedic moments. For example, when Denny faces a court battle with his in-laws over the custody of his daughter, the dog, an avid TV watcher, envisions it

as a court episode of “Law and Order,” starring his family.

The human actors in the story are fine, but it is the dog actors who steal the show, from the adorable puppy Enzo to the aging Enzo and the young Enzo in between.

“The Art of Racing in the Rain,” rated PG, has a

running time of 109 minutes.

The film is now available on DVD. It contains featurettes on the making of the film, including commentary by producer Patrick Dempsey, who is a noted actor and professional race car, driver.

Seared Salmon with Pine Nut, Caper and Fennel Topping

Recipe courtesy of Anolon Gourmet Cookware Yield: 4 servings Anolon Advanced Home 12-inch nonstick skillet 1/2 cup pine nuts 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided

1 shallot, finely chopped (about 3 tablespoons) 1/2 medium fennel bulb, cored and finely chopped

3 tablespoons drained capers 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh orange zest

2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil 1/2 teaspoon, plus 1/8 teaspoon, salt, divided

4 skin-on salmon fillets (6-7 ounces each) 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Heat nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add pine nuts and cook, shaking pan often, about 4-5 minutes until lightly browned. Transfer pine nuts to medium bowl.

In same skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil.

Add shallot and fennel; cook, stirring occasionally, 3-4 minutes until slightly softened. Add capers and cook 1 minute. Transfer to bowl with pine nuts. Stir in remaining oil and orange zest. Let cool 5 minutes before adding basil and 1/8 teaspoon salt; reserve.

Season salmon with remaining salt and pepper. Heat skillet over medium heat until hot. Add salmon, fleshside down, and cook 5 minutes until nicely browned.

Flip salmon and continue cooking 4-5 minutes until skin is crisp and salmon is cooked through but still slightly translucent in center. Place one salmon fillet on each of four serving plates; top each with pine nut mixture.

3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 1 1/2 pounds green beans, ends trimmed

freshly ground black pepper, to taste In nonstick skillet over medium heat, warm olive oil.

Add onions and cook until soft, stirring occasionally, 7-10 minutes. Add garlic and continue stirring 1 minute.

Add green beans and tomatoes; cover and cook over low heat until green beans are soft, 25 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook, uncovered, until liquid is almost gone, 2-3 minutes.

6 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup, plus 2 teaspoons, sugar, divided 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon or apple pie spice

6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into eight wedges each 1 refrigerated pie crust 2 teaspoons cream

In nonstick skillet over low heat, melt butter; remove from heat. Stir in 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Arrange apple wedges evenly in skillet, overlapping as needed.

Heat oven to 350 F. In skillet over medium heat, cook sugar mixture until it is light amber in color and bubbly, 8-10 minutes.

Carefully place pie crust on top of apples; cut few slits in pastry to allow air to escape.

Brush pastry with cream and remaining sugar.

Bake 25-30 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Serve warm or at room temperature.

So it’s little surprise that the 20th Anniversary Legacy Edition of “Acoustic Rumble” is one of 2019’s best and most important reissues. Bolstered by the inclusion of two new bonus tracks (the Americanaflavored “All in God’s Name” and countrified “Armageddon Blues”), “Acoustic Rumble” continues to be a revelation with its well-aimed and insightful lyrics along with Ubaldini’s powerful voice; the only accompaniment is that of his fiery acoustic guitar and

blasting harmonica. From the literate fire of “The 7th Trumpet” and inspirational anthem “Badge of Freedom” to the nuanced grace of “Shadows & Ghosts” and the articulate expose of lust on “World Comes Crashin’ Down,” every song here hits its mark. Recordings continues to reintroduce under-the-radar and forgotten gems to modern-day audiences. Listen no further than the glorious second album from Uncle Walt’s Band. “An American in Texas” was originally released back in 1980, and the mix of early Americana and groundbreaking threepart vocal harmonies sounds amazing on the new reissue, which includes the original 12-track release as well as 13 bonus cuts. One of the most popular acoustic bands in Austin, Texas during the late 1970s and early ‘80s, the “An American in Texas” reissue goes a long way to help lovers of roots music get a proper introduction to the talents of Walter Hyatt, Champ Hood and David Ball. “Too Far To Fall” is a particularly gorgeous song, and the bonus track “Hard to Bear” features some decidedly amazing vocal harmonies. Artist: Neil Young Title: Songs For Judy (Shakey Pictures Records) You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young’s “Harvest” and “Harvest Moon” albums Tell me more: “Songs For Judy” is not only the debut release on Neil Young’s own Shakey Pictures Records label, it’s also a terrific musthear album featuring cuts from the artist’s 1976 solo tour.

Twenty-two songs recorded at various tour dates, the disc is sonic nirvana for fans of Young’s original gems written and recorded in the early part of his career. Favorites abound; he delves into Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul,” the reflective “Heart of Gold,” as well as the soul-stirring “After the Gold Rush” and “A Man Needs a Maid.” Later there are stunning takes on “The Needle and the Damage Done,” “Pocahontas” and “Sugar Mountain.” As if all of that wasn’t enough paydirt, the disc also features “No One Seems To Know,” which is a song not officially released on any album by Young until now.

Retrial of AZ Aid Worker Opens Today in Tucson

By Desert Star Staff TUCSON, Ariz. — Government prosecutors in Tucson federal court are set to open a retrial today of a humanitarian aid worker who helped migrants in the Arizona desert. The original trial of Scott Warren on charges related to providing food, water and shelter to undocumented migrants ended in July with a deadlocked jury.

The 36-year-old Warren, a geography professor and volunteer with the aid group No More Deaths, was arrested in January 2018 by Border Patrol officers in Ajo , near the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to Paige CorichKleim, media coordinator with No More Deaths, the group plans to continue its protests against the government.

“Throughout the trial we’re going to be continuing our work, so we’ve kept putting water out and providing humanitarian aid throughout this whole trial,” Crich-Kleim said. “We’ll also every morning just have people gathered outside the court for support and then we’re going to be packing the courtroom.”

Prosecutors are seeking to convict Warren on two counts of human smuggling, a felony that could bring a 10-year prison term. Four other aid volunteers were convicted on misdemeanor charges last year for

leaving food and water in a refuge near the border.

The Tucson medical examiner’s office said more than 3,000 migrants have died in the southern Arizona desert over the past 20 years. Corich-Kleim said hundreds more may have been saved by providing food and water near the border.

“The arrest came a couple hours after we released a report and a video of Border Patrol agents destroying humanitarian aid supplies,” she said. “The arrest is pretty retaliatory, kind of, against the organization for speaking out.”

She expressed optimism that Warren would not be convicted this time around either.

“During the initial trial, it was two counts of harboring and also conspiracy to transport and harbor, and they dropped the conspiracy charges,” Corich-Kleim said. “I think throughout the trial it became pretty clear that they didn’t really have much of a case to back up those charges. But I think the same can be said for the harboring charges.”

Warren’s case has drawn both national and international attention, with a group of United Nations human rights experts unsuccessfully calling on the U.S. government to drop the charges. The trial is expected to last about three weeks.

New strain of HIV detected for the first time in almost 20 years Infectious Diseases, said. “Not a lot of people are infected with this. This is an outlier.”

Scientists began studying this third sample in order to map it and provide thorough evidence for a third strain, in a process described as being “like searching for a needle in a haystack,” and then “pulling the needle out with a magnet.”

It is as yet unclear whether this subtype acts differently from other subtypes of the virus, but current treatments

can fight this new strain, so there is no major cause for concern, it is merely another step in finding a cure for the disease.

“This discovery reminds us that to end the HIV pandemic, we must continue to outthink this continuously changing virus and use the latest advancements in technology and resources to monitor its evolution,” said the study’s co-author Dr. Carole McArthur from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

At present, more than 37 million people living with HIV worldwide, the most on record, with some 1.8 million new infections diagnosed in 2016 alone.

However, Michael Worobey, head of the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona, says the latest revelation is not that big of a deal given that the new subtype belongs to the most common form of HIV, which accounts for roughly 90 percent of all cases.

“It is actually misleading to describe genetic diversity from the [Democratic Republic of] Congo as a new subtype because the only useful meaning of the term ‘subtype’ would come from the identification of a lineage of the virus that has spread significantly beyond Central Africa,” he said.

Prep time: 25 minutes | Cook time: 40 minutes | Serves: 8 Ingredients: 1 large egg 2 pounds 93% lean ground turkey 1 medium DOLE® Yellow Onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup oat milk 1/2 cup whole-wheat panko breadcrumbs 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 package (8 ounces) Dole Mushrooms, sliced 2 cups unsalted chicken stock 3 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/4 cup plain almond milk yogurt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Line rimmed baking pan with parchment paper.

In large bowl, whisk egg; gently mix in turkey, onion, oat milk, breadcrumbs, pumpkin pie spice and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Form turkey mixture into eight (4-by-2 1/2-inch) loaves; place on prepared pan.

Bake loaves 40 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165 F. In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil; add mushrooms and cook 5 minutes, or until tender, stirring occasionally.

In medium bowl, whisk chicken stock and flour; add to skillet and cook 3 minutes, or until thickened, whisking occasionally. Whisk in yogurt, pepper and remaining salt.

Serve loaves topped with gravy and sprinkled with parsley.

Tip: To freeze loaves, prepare turkey loaves but do not bake; freeze 2 hours, or until frozen. Wrap loaves tightly with plastic wrap and freeze in freezer-safe, zip-top plastic bags up to 3 months.

Thaw loaves in refrigerator overnight then bake on parchmentlined rimmed baking pan at 350 F 40 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165 F. Proceed with remaining instructions.

Buttigieg Appeals to Vietnam Veterans in NH

By Desert Star Staff ROCHESTER, N.H. — Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg released his veterans plan on Monday in New Hampshire and appealed directly to Vietnam veterans.

An Iraq war veteran himself, Buttigieg went off script during his address at the Rochester Opera House to speak to those who served in Vietnam.

“This isn’t in my speech, but I want to say to anybody here who served in the Vietnam generation - and if you were among those who were not received in the right way when you came home - I believe it is better late than never to say thank you, and welcome home,” Buttigieg said.

According to the latest Quinnipiac University poll, Buttigieg is running third in the New Hampshire Democratic primary, with former Vice President Joe Biden in the lead, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren polling second. Buttigieg has pulled ahead of other primary contenders by courting centrist voters, hoping to chip away at Biden’s lead among moderates.

On Monday, Buttigieg also said he would nominate a woman to head the Veterans Administration for the first time, and his veterans plan aims to fully fund the VA. While Buttigieg is the youngest candidate in the race, he tried connecting with Vietnam veterans on Monday by reflecting on his experience coming home from Iraq.

“Having come home to balloons and smiles at a time when America had benefited from learning how to separate what we feel about those who serve from what we feel about the policies of this country,” he said; “not everybody who served had that same benefit.”

Buttigieg has a similar demographic base of support as Warren, polling well among highly educated white Democrats. But critics note Buttigieg’s low level of support among African Americans and other minorities, as well as his lack of experience. If elected, the Indiana mayor would be the first candidate to go straight from city hall to the White House.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Artists Council held its 51st annual art exhibition on November 7th at the Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Desert, The Galen, and Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden.

The Fall 2019 Artists Council exhibition honored long-time supporters, Barbara and Jerry Keller. Sadly Barbara Keller passed away this year, but Jerry Keller arrived to support this exhibition. The Kellers are philanthropists who have helped so many of the Arts in the Valley,

along with other charities with their time, dedication, and money. They have given to so much in our Valley.

This exhibition celebrates its first year as an independent, non-profit arts organization that is dedicated to the promotion of arts and artists in the Coachella Valey. The Council’s mission is to bring highquality artists’ achievements

by Artists Council members to show their works to local people. The art in this exhibition is juried by Daniela Lieja and Quintanar and Phoebe

Beasly. Prizes of $3000 were awarded. The Jurors come with an impressive resume of knowledge in the field of Artart.

All Artart was for sale, and the proceeds were split between the Artists and the Artists Council. I talked with several people to ask them if they had a favorite, and many told me they had already purchased some of the works of Artart. The event held a private VIP party early, where over 350 guests attended.

The public was invited shortly after on the opening night and

totaled over 700 attendings.

This is one night where they can see really high-quality art free and visualize the many forms of Artart in one place that included paintings in all media, photography, sculpture, and various creations.

LULUs restaurant catered to the dinner, which consisted of Shrimp, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and a table of celery, carrots, cheeses, crackers, grapes, and more.

Refreshments and dinner were set up in the Garden area.

Winners were announced,

Martha Cowan for Breaks Over, Karen Curry for One Woman One Song, Dennis Johnson for Desert Musings, Mike McLain for Gotta Revolution, Gary Paterson for Modernism in Perspective. The Stephen and Colleen Baumbach photography award went to Nettie Pena for Tom Minderhof.

KAREN and Tony Barone sponsored a special prize, the Apollo Award that honors someone who furthers the Arts Council Mission, and that award went to Curt Miller.

Art of the Turkey Brine

Morse of 5280 Culinary and Ace Hardware Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: About 2 hours; allow 2-3 hours to cool Servings: 6-8 1/3 package 5280 Culinary Brine mix 2 quarts water, plus additional for cooling and covering turkey, divided ice 6-8 pounds turkey breast with rib cage, cleaned 1 5-gallon Ace Hardware bucket and lid

In pan, mix brine with water. Heat to high 5 minutes to dissolve sugar and salt.

Cool brine mixture; add ice water and mix well.

Place turkey in bucket and cover with water and brine. Place bucket in refrigerator or cooler.

Brine 45 minutes per pound.

Remove turkey from brine.

Heat wood fire grill to 350 F. Cook turkey 20 minutes then turn temperature to 275 F. Cook 1 hour, 40 minutes until internal temperature reaches 170 F. Allow turkey to rest about 15 minutes prior to carving to allow juices to settle.

Morse of 5280 Culinary and Ace Hardware Prep time: 15 minutes, plus 1 day for drying Cook time: 20-25 minutes Servings: 10-12 1 package cornbread 1 pound sweet Italian sausage, ground 1/2 cup carrots, peeled and diced 1/2 cup celery with leaves, diced 1/2 cup yellow onion, peeled and diced 1/4 cup dried blueberries 1/2 cup dried apples 1 teaspoon fresh garlic, crushed barbecue rub 1-2 cups low-sodium chicken stock

nonstick cooking spray Cook cornbread according to package instructions; allow to cool. Leave uncovered and let dry 1 day. Break into medium pieces.

Heat wood fire grill to 350 F. Heat medium skillet and add sausage.

Cook until half done and fat is rendered.

Add carrots, celery, onion, blueberries, apples and garlic. Saute until caramelized. Add cornbread pieces and stir to combine. Add chicken stock until slightly wet or pasty; stir well to combine.

Season, to taste, with barbecue rub and transfer stuffing from skillet to pan lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.

Grill, uncovered, 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Internal temperature should reach 155 F when fully cooked.
