SiriusXM announced today that for the first time it broadcasted live performances and backstage interviews from the prestigious Stagecoach Country Music Festival located in Indio, California.

The exclusive radio broadcast did air on The Highway – Channel 56 and will included backstage interviews and live concert performances from Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen, Kelsea Ballerini, Kane Brown, Brett Young, Lee Brice, and more.

SiriusXM also announced that the SiriusXM Spotlight Stage, a unique Stagecoach stage highlighting up-andcoming artists including Highway Find artists Carly Pearce, Ashley McBryde, Adam Doleac, Seth Ennis, and numerous others.

In addition to all the official festival activities, a special edition of SiriusXM’s ‘Music Row Happy Hour’ hosted by Buzz Brainard, aired live from Stagecoach on Friday, April 27.

Childers said it was hard to believe that this production has been successful for 13 straight years. Childers serves as the producer of the event finding the talent for the concert. Broadways favorite actor, Jason Graae, served as Director of this year’s show.

Ken Katz was the Executive Producer again this year, and the co-producer was Nancy Downer. This event could not happen without all the help of the Co-chairs. It takes many to fill that role for such a massive production. The evening started with a cocktail hour where waiters walked around with slices of Pizza. A buffet table was set up in the dining area where finger sandwiches and other treats were available.

There was a bar set up just on the outside patio where guests could be seated at tables or standing at high tables. The terrace overlooks the pool and golf course.

The Palm Springs High School band performed on the opposite of the pool. Guests watched in awe as the baton twirlers did their routines.

Galen thanked all for coming as guests filled this beautiful home with all the fabulous art. Guests were treated for valet service and welcomed

by Galen and Kabler as they entered. It was like friends meeting friends with the cast as some only see each other at the One Night Only Concert.

The highlight of the evening is when some of the cast of One Night Only perform for the guests. This informal setting is such a thrill for the crowd, and many get involved with a sing-along. Liz Calloway and Ann Hampton Calloway started the evening with Ann on the piano and both singing.

Next came Faith Prince with Billy Stritch at the Piano singing along with her. David Bernham got the crowd going by going into the group and hugging guests and asking for guests to sing along.

There were four buffet tables, so there was no waiting for a meal. There was salads, pasta, meats, vegetables and more. Desserts were on each table, and there were over 50 tables set up and other tables for standing.

There was entertainment the night of the afterparty. Then

at the end of the meal waiters came around each table with a large goblet filled with pink cotton candy. This afterparty is part of the price of the ticket to see a fabulous show.

Guests were able to talk to and interact with the singers and actors of the concert.

This concert gives the audience an experience of listening to some of broadways stars in an intimate setting.

To be able to see and hear so many in such a short time can be applauded by those who make it all happen. This Desert provides some of the biggest and best in entertainment in such a small community.

This One Night Only is one of the biggest venues in the Valley. No wonder it is a sellout early. And it benefits a muchneeded charity in Jewish Family Services of the Desert.

Impact investments provide the capital to address social and environmental issues.

What are some of the reasons that the wealthy are motivated to gift?

Respondents who were surveyed recently stated that they feel that society is best served by supporting their values and interests. The most believe that they have a moral obligation to share their good fortune with less fortunate people. They have an ardent desire to leave a legacy and have a strong desire and sense of potential to improve the world. In most cases, their family has had a history of giving back, and

they want to gift their talents and time because they feel gratitude for the support they were given, when they had less and needed the help.

The survey also revealed that most wealthy individuals expressed more confidence in the private sector’s than in the government’s ability to solve social and environmental issues and many maintained that private money invested in public works and social programs could produce superior outcomes.

Wealthy individuals who made financial contributions to nonprofits and causes, also, considered philanthropic giving the best way they make the most significant contribution. Another way they give is by actively volunteering their time, skills and services to nonprofit organizations, while many work for nonprofit groups.

Recent studies found that

investors planned to increase capital committed to impact investments this year and this sector of investments have shown steady growth and good returns. Many investors feel that businesses and individuals were most effective at creating better economic opportunities and a higher standard of living for more people. Surveys also found that the Wealthy respondents feel that the most effective ways to stimulate the economy are comprehensive tax reform, investments in infrastructure, increasing the rate of business startups and ventures in innovation and research. Only a small percent believe that the government was most effective at creating economic opportunities.

Two-thirds of respondents surveyed said economic equality in the country would be worse or no better if left entirely to the government

to address, no matter what party is in control. Although 70% expressed confidence in the growth of the national economy, more felt stronger about their local economies, where they could more directly make a difference as business owners and work with local leadership.

Without their gifts, many non-profits would not be in existence, and our goals for improving our society and environment would not be possible.

More Bills of Interest to Help (or Harm?) HOAs in 2018

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Last week’s column discussed SB1265, a terrible bill for HOAs. There are several other bills which, if passed, would make major and minor changes to HOAs in 2019, and they are a mixed bag.

Senate Bill (“SB”)1016, authored by Senator Allen, would add Civil Code 4745.1 to the current 4745 (regarding electric vehicle charging stations). Civil 4745.1 would require associations to cooperate with owners who wish to install “time of use” (“TOU”) meters on their electric vehicle charging stations. So long as members meet the requirements, encouraging electric vehicles is a good thing, and SB 1016 helps that good thing in HOAs. SB 1016 was approved by the Senate, and is pending in the Assembly.

SB 1128, authored by Senator Roth from Northern Riverside County, would reduce wasted motion in HOA elections. If passed, this bill would create Civil Code 5100(g), which would allow an association to declare candidates elected by acclamation if, after the period for nominations has closed, there are no more candidates than openings on the board. The bill would also allow homeowners to elect to notify the HOA via email (instead of a “hard” copy) that the homeowner wishes to receive notifications via email rather than postal mail. The bill passed the

Senate Transportation and Housing Committee and is awaiting hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The bill is practical, a quality sorely needed in the HOA governance world.

Senate Bill 721 is a major bill applying to both apartment and condominium buildings. SB721 arises from the 2015 tragedy in Berkeley in which 6 persons died and 7 others were injured when a 5th floor apartment balcony collapsed. The balcony was alleged to have been in need of repairs. The bill is co-authored by Senators Hill (San Francisco) and Skinner (East San Francisco Bay) and includes adding a new Section 4776 to the Davis-Stirling Act. The new section would require associations to have an architect, civil engineer, structural engineer, or independent certified building inspector inspect balconies, elevated walkways, railings May 2, 2018

and any other “elevated exterior element” once every six years, with the first inspection completed no later than January 1, 2024. The inspection must be followed by a detailed report within 45 days of the inspection, and the inspector must inspect at least 15% of each elevated exterior element. As to HOAs, the new law would only apply to community apartments, stock cooperatives and condominiums, and not to planned developments.

A number of questions remain unanswered about this bill, despite its laudable goal. Will associations and apartment building owners be able to find qualified professionals who will perform these inspections? Will the inspectors be held liable if they miss something? Will these inspectors be able to procure insurance to cover the risk of negligent inspections?

If an apartment owner or HOA

board obtains this inspection of 15% of its balconies, is that a shield against liability if one of the 85% other elevated exterior elements fail? SB 721 was approved by the Senate and is currently pending in the Assembly.

Anti-Immigrant Law Sits on TN Governor’s Desk

Tennessee communities will be prohibited from offering sanctuary to undocumented immigrants, and the law may actually lead to increased incidences of unreported crime when immigrants are afraid to call police for help. (yummypixels/Twenty20)

but a bill awaiting Gov. Bill Haslam’s signature frames the state as less than welcoming.

By Desert Star Staff OLYMPIA, Wash. – An orca conservation team convened by Gov. Jay Inslee is holding its first meeting on Tuesday. The Southern Resident Killer Whale Recovery Task Force will focus on ways to help the Northwest’s iconic species.

Southern Resident Orca numbers in the Salish Sea have been in serious decline, reaching a high of 98 in 1995 and numbering only 76 today. It is the only killer whale population protected under the Endangered Species Act, but the state believes more conservation efforts are needed.

Stephanie Solien, who is co-chairing the Task Force, says many of the remaining orcas are in bad shape. She says the Task Force will focus on three of the well-known threats to the whales.

“There’s a lack of adult

chinook salmon abundance,” she says. “There’s persistent toxic pollutants that are both in our Puget Sound and in the waters all the way up to Canada. And underwater noise and disturbance from both commercial and recreational vessels.”

Solein says underwater noise is affecting the whales’ ability to forage and communicate. Inslee will be at the first meeting, where Solein says members will learn about the science of what the whales need to survive and set up a governing structure. In his executive order, Inslee laid out a two-year timeline for action.

The Task Force includes members of tribes, commercial fishing and conservation groups, the state Legislature and the provincial government of British Columbia.

Solien says conservation will be a statewide effort, especially when it comes to

the “Anti-Sanctuary Bill,” requires local governments to enforce deportation activities. Opponents say it’s

the most extreme legislation of its kind in the country and will come at a cost to more than just Tennessee’s immigrant population.

Stephanie Teatro is coexecutive director of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition.

“Tennesseans are going to be spending their local tax dollars supporting the work of the federal government,” Teatro said. “It means that immigrant families are going to have to fear calling the police, because they’re going to know that police are now required to ask about immigration status, required to share information and detain people for ICE.” The ACLU of Tennessee also opposed the bill, calling it “a direct assault on our civil liberties and the quality of life in our welcoming state.”

Haslam has 10 days to veto or sign the legislation,

or he can allow it to become law without his signature.

Supporters say it’s needed to maintain current federal immigration law.

There are currently no sanctuary cities in Tennessee, and the bill would block some state funding from any cities who chose to offer sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.

Some civil rights experts question the constitutionality of the bill, and Teatro is concerned about the damage to the state’s reputation.

“We hope that the governor will veto this extreme bill that will make Tennessee a very dangerous place for immigrant families,” she said.

“That will damage our state’s reputation and our economy. “ Critics of the bill have said the legislation opens up local governments to potential lawsuits if they illegally detain someone.

Governor-Led Orca Recovery Effort to Hold First Meeting

“We are fortunate that this

statewide salmon recovery network will be working with us to provide both short- and long-term recommendations on habitat needs, as well as the need for clean and plentiful water,” she explains.

Solien says this plan will test the Northwest’s ability to tackle big issues in the environment.

“We cannot fail,” she stresses. “This is a regional effort that has to succeed.”

Fired Boulder Editor Fears for Other Colorado Newspapers

By Desert Star Staff BOULDER, Co. – A Boulder newspaper editor says his recent firing could have a chilling effect on other Colorado newspapers that are controlled by the hedge fund Alden Global Capital.

Boulder Daily Camera editor Dave Krieger was fired last week after selfpublishing a piece highly critical of Alden, which owns 50 newspapers across the country, including the Camera, the Denver Post and other papers along the Front Range and eastern plains.

originally meant to appear on the Camera’s editorial page days after the Denver Post published similar critical opinions of Alden for its plans to cut one-third of the paper’s staff this year. When the Camera’s publisher refused to print Krieger’s editorial, Krieger self-published it on a blog and was fired days later.

He says it was the first time the paper had censored his content.

“This violated the basic, and really sort of sacred norm in journalism, is that journalists make those decisions and business people do not,” he

says. “That’s just rule number one, and there’s no decent journalism organization in the country that does not abide by that rule.”

Denver Post editors have called on Alden to sell the paper, rather than continue reducing staff and its ability to provide Front Range news coverage. Attempts to contact Alden Global Capital or Digital First Media for a response have been unsuccessful so far.

what’s causing their pages and local coverage to shrink.

“This is an important story for Boulder, and Boulder should know it,” he adds. “Its newspaper is on the verge of death. It is in a death spiral.”

Alden took over the papers in 2010 and runs them through Digital First Media. But Krieger says many readers who subscribe to one of the papers aren’t aware their news source is being strangled by a hedge fund, because stories critical of the owners aren’t printed.

“If the ownership of the Boulder Daily Camera is so

corrupt that it will not even allow itself to be used as a platform for a discussion of this important civic issue, if it is so corrupt that it will suppress any mention of this important Boulder issue, then I have to admit it might not be worth saving,” he laments.

Digital First Media has eliminated two out of every three staff positions at its media properties since 2010. Alden also owns the Longmont, Loveland and Estes Park newspapers, as well as several others in Colorado.

Interest Rates are Rising: Should You Buy a Home or Wait?

By Desert Star Staff With heightened talk of rising interest rates, many prospective homebuyers are understandably concerned about whether it’s the right time to purchase a home.

Indeed, you may be wondering if you waited too long and let the historically low interest rates pass you by or if you can still find a dream home that fits within your current budget.

Experts say that it’s true that rates are at their highest in almost four years and that this year has been particularly rough, however, it’s not all bad news. Rates are still well below the levels seen 10, 20 and 30 years ago.

Conservatives: Methane Rollback Not Aligned with Conservative Values

By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship has launched a media blitz arguing the Trump administration’s plan to roll back a waste-prevention rule on methane is not consistent with conservative principles.

The Obama-era rule was designed to prevent energy waste, ensure a fair return on royalties, and improve air quality. It was set to take effect earlier this year, but Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said it was a burden on the industry and called for it to be eliminated.

David Jenkins is president of Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship.

He said he wants New Mexico Republican Rep.

Steve Pearce to stop supporting the rollback.

“You know, I’m a conservative, our organization is an organization of conservatives, and we’re of the opinion that waste is not conservative,” Jenkins said. “Common sense standards being put in place to prevent waste and to save taxpayers money, that’s a conservative thing to do.”

Jenkins’ group has placed multiple newspaper, radio and online ads to support the methane rule.

A conservation group that monitored the comment period on the proposed rollback said 99 percent of the half-million people who weighed in were opposed.

Methane is a potent

greenhouse gas, and reports show that harmful emissions from oil and gas production on federal and tribal lands is worse in New Mexico than any other state. Jenkins argued that restricting emissions should not be a political issue.

“Their knee-jerk reaction to push for a rollback, in our view, is just special interest politics,” he said.

“And it has nothing to do

with thinking about what’s best for New Mexico residents going forward.”

The Department of the Interior reported that in 2014, oil and gas companies wasted enough gas to supply 1.5 million households for a year.

Jenkins said in New Mexico alone, the industry is estimated to waste more than $100 million worth of natural gas annually.

“What it comes down to are people not willing to go that little extra step to do something right,” Jenkins said. “They want to do the easiest thing and the quickest thing to get them profit with the least amount of effort.”

Colorado already requires oil and gas companies to install equipment to capture excess gas.

‘Paddington 2’ --A Charming Tale for All Ages

In the first “Paddington” movie from Warner Bros., the adorable Peruvian bear named Paddington journeys to London where he is adopted by the Brown family headed by Hugh Bonneville (“Downton Abbey”).

In the sequel Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) wants to find the perfect birthday gift for his Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) who will be celebrating her 100th birthday in Peru. He isn’t sure what to give his beloved Auntie, so he visits the gift shop of Mr. Gruber (Jim Broadbent) in search of the perfect present.

When he spots a delightful pop-up book about London, filled with beautiful illustrations that leap off the page, Paddington tells Mr. Gruber he must have it. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have enough money to pay for it. He asks Mr. Gruber to please save the book for him while he looks for a job to earn enough money to buy it.

Immediately Paddington heads off to find work to raise the money. His first job in a barber shop turns out to be a disaster, but fun to watch as the little bear attempts to do a haircut that

doesn’t turn out well at all.

Next, he becomes a window washer, but that too is not easy for the little bear in a red hat and blue coat who finds it hard to reach windows on the second floor.

When the Brown’s next door neighbor, actor Phoenix Buchanan (played by Hugh Grant), hears about the book which contains a hidden secret, he goes to the gift shop to buy it. However Mr. Gruber knows how much it means to Paddington, so he doesn’t sell it to him. At this point, the actor steals the book from the shop and frames it on Paddington who frantically runs after him in the dark of night in an attempt to retrieve this extraordinary book.

When the actor, who is also a magician, disappears with the pop-up book only poor Paddington is captured by the police. He goes to trial and is found guilty of the theft. As a result, Paddington is sentenced to prison.

Used to eating fantastic marmalade sandwiches at home with his family, Paddington politely complains to the growling prison chef, Knuckles (Brendan

AMERYKA – The History of the World in 2 ½ Hours its core, the story attempts to depict America and Poland’s struggle for freedom and with it’s complicated narrative and sprawling scope, one can’t help recognizing the enormous amount of effort that went into the six years devoted to the development of this piece which, for some reason, was presented as part of Center Theatre’s Group Block Party, which is a celebration of theatre.

featuring Ringo Starr’s Award for Musical Excellence is terrific, with both Paul McCartney and Starr shedding insight and humor into the Fab Four’s beginnings and subsequent performances of “Boys” (with Starr joined by Green Day), “It Don’t Come Easy” (featuring Joe Walsh on 12-string guitar) and the rousing finale with Starr, McCartney, Walsh, Beck and others joining forces. Among the standout performances at 2016’s ceremony that shine are Deep Purple blazing through the classic “Highway Star” and Cheap Trick’s full original lineup teaming up for a jubilant rocking set (“I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police,” “Surrender” and “Ain’t That a Shame”). Title: Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert - Original Soundtrack of the NBC Television Event (Masterworks Broadway) You might like if you enjoy: The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber Tell me more: The airing of “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” on NBC-TV on April 1, 2018 (Easter Sunday) drew an estimated 10 million viewers and reintroduced the power of the enduring rock opera created by lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd

Webber in the early 1970s.

The live TV musical is now available as a 2CD audio set and will please fans of those who caught the TV special last month. Soul singer John Legend (a 10-time Grammy winner) is featured as Jesus Christ and the rest of the cast is just as strong, notably Sara Barelles (Mary Magdalene), Alice Cooper (King Herod), Brandon Victor Dixon (Judas) and Jason Tam (Peter). Other members of the cast include Ben Daniels (Pontius Pilate), Norm Lewis (Caiaphas), Jin Ha (Annas) and Swedish rock star Erik Gronwall (Simon Zealotes). Legend’s vocals are up to the task for the wide range of emotions he conveys in the demanding role of Jesus, notably on the foreboding “Gethsemane (I Only Wanted to Say)” and “The Last Supper” as well as on the tragic “The Arrest” and “The Crucifixion.” Among the strong performances featuring Barelles are “Everything’s Alright” and the tender “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” Another standout on the recording is “King Herod’s Song,” a zealous turn from classic rock icon Alice Cooper. The Supremes Keep Us Hangin’ 50-Plus Years Anniversary Album’s

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, -- On June 15, in anticipation of the upcoming 60th anniversary of Motown — a.k.a. Hitsville U.S.A. — and inspired by the album’s recent 51st anniversary, Motown/UMe is releasing a 2-CD Expanded Edition of The Supremes’ tenth studio effort, the chart-topping The Supremes Sing HollandDozier-Holland. A whopping 52 tracks magnify the scope of a seminal album that made history, including 28 tracks that are heard here for the first time via some updated mixes and alternate versions. As well as a score of electrifying live performances captured at the Copacabana nightclub in New York City in May 1967, the last recorded performance of the original trio: Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard.

The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland, initially released in January 1967, further cemented the group’s chart prowess and vocal harmonizing skills. The original album, inspired by the production team who along with the group had come to define the “Motown Sound.”

Producers Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier and lyricist Edward Holland Jr. – spawned a pair of universally loved No. 1 singles, the forever-pleading “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” and the heartbreakingly dramatic “Love Is Here, and Now You’re Gone.” The LP also went to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B Albums Chart, their fourth album to do so up to that point while peaking at no. 6 Pop. Formed in Detroit as The Primettes in 1959, The Supremes were Motown’s most successful act of the 1960s, scoring 12 No. 1 singles.

They also continue to reign as America’s most successful vocal group to date. Their influence not only carries on in contemporary R&B, soul and pop, they also helped pave the way for mainstream success by African-American artists across all genres.

The expanded The Supremes Sing Holland-DozierHolland includes the original album in both its original mono and stereo mixes – with the mono record on CD for the first time – plus several rare and new mixes created exclusively for this expanded edition,

including alternate versions and alternate mixes of the hits. The original film version of the No. 1 hit “The Happening,” which was re-cut for the single version; a version of “Love Is Here, and Now You’re Gone” with a vocal previously available only on a Japanese release. A oncein-a-lifetime “duet” version of “You’re Gone (But Always In My Heart),” that includes lead vocals by Diana Ross and Gladys Knight. And a Motown mashup of the H-D-H classics “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” and “Where Did Our Love Go.” Rounding out this collection is a rare recording from the Copacabana in New York, in May 1967, one of the last performances of the group with Florence Ballard.

This spirited show is a masterful blend of Supremes hits and shows tunes, the epitome of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s vision for his Detroit-based company. And included in the package is a 32-page booklet with rare and never-before-seen photos plus an interview with Lamont Dozier. Also included is a bonus 24-page booklet that recreates The Supremes’ 1967 souvenir tour booklet.

4 Migrant Couples Marry Before Entering U.S.

KMIR News Staff Shaky hands, butterflies, looking deeply into one another’s eyes: these are all normal wedding day feelings, but for four couples in Tijuana, Sunday’s ceremony had an even deeper meaning.

After they’re married, they will try to cross into the United States together to seek political asylum.

The couples are part of a caravan of some 300 mostly Central American migrants trying to escape unrest in their countries.

Before crossing the border into San Diego, the couples were married in a joint wedding ceremony in Tijuana Sunday morning.

Pastor Emma Lozano of Chicago’s Lincoln United Methodist Church wore symbolic butterfly wings as she sought to transform the lives of the brides and grooms before her.

Pride Comes to Coachella with East Valley Flair

KMIR Max Rodriguez The Coachella Veterans Memorial Park wore the colors of the rainbow during the second annual East Coachella Valley Pride Festival.

It was a pride festival but with an eastern valley flair, Fabeyonce turnedup the energy with a drag performance with music by Latina icon Jenni Rivera, and Indio resident and one of the event organizers Paulina Angel was proud to see LGBTQ pride in her neighborhood.

Angel said, “So amazing to finally see it brought here to the East Valley, we are finally bringing education, understanding and possibly gain some allies.”

For many years, pride in the desert was only associated to Palm Spring’s event in November, but Angel said the Coachella Valley is an extensive region, and they want to see more outreach.

Angel said, “Growing up LGBT, there wasn’t anything down here for the longest

time, you had to go to either Palm Springs or even L.A. or San Francisco.”

On Saturday a “marcha de orgullo” or pride march transformed the Coachella Veterans Memorial Park into a safe space for expression.

The superintendent for the Coachella Valley Unified School

District, Dr. Edwin Gomez was one of the marchers, he said, “I think it is great to have the kids participate, have the community participate in a great event like this, and it is wonderful to see the enthusiasm of the community and just to be part of it.”

As much as the event was

a LGBTQ pride demonstration, it was also an outlet for resources such as HIV testing and prevention education by the Desert Aids Project.

Jose De La Cruz is a community educator with the Desert Aids Project, he said, “The first line of defense is education, and if you are aware and if you are knowledgeable about the infection being here, then you are more likely to take action to prevent it from happening.”

He said the organization has made a push to bring more of their education and resources to the east part of the valley.

And because one in ten people identify as a member of the LGBTQ community, pride will continue to grow into new areas of the desert.

Angel said, “This gives us the chance to finally represent the community that we have here as well.” Source: KMIR

Fans of crossword puzzles will enjoy CV Rep’s latest comedy “2 Across”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) The impact that crossword puzzles play around the world obviously is unknown, despite the fact that millions indulge themselves every day solving or at least, trying to solve these literary challenges known as the ‘war of the words’.

What is known, however, is the role that one particular New York Times puzzle plays, in the current CV REP stage production, “2 Across”, in Rancho Mirage. This delightful comedy of words and puzzles, and conversation, written by prolific comedy TV writer/ producer Jerry Mayer, is seamlessly and creatively directed by Deborah Harmon.

Audiences can always rely on the technical/creative team credits at CV REP as being first rate. Theatrical productions often win over the hearts and minds of their patrons when they walk into the auditorium.

CV REP is blessed with the creativity and artistry of its resident Set Designer and Emmy Award winner Jimmy Cuomo, who never to fails impress his audience. In “2 Across”, two stars perform their magic on a BART train set that feels so visually real, that we’re ready to exit when we hear our station being called by the car’s recorded conductor’s voice. Now, that’s an almost virtual reality experience.

The story hook, in short, that brings two strangers aboard a San Francisco BART train at 4:30 AM is a pesky NY

Times crossword puzzle, and how each reacts to it and their personal situations. They’re alone in the car, each is married, and both are silently challenging the crossword author. When Josh (a terrific Joel Bryant), tosses his puzzle away in frustration. Janet (a lovely and prim Andrea Gwynnel) snaps, “Crosswords are a metaphor for life, those who finish, succeed; those who don’t, fail.” Thus, setting up a witty, hilarious ‘He said. She said.’ dialogue and at times, delivering many poignant moments of personal revelations, by Josh and Janet in the bargain.

Although the play is performed without an intermission, running about 85 minutes, we’re quickly drawn into the play’s narrative thanks to the wonderful onstage chemistry of Mr. Bryant and Ms. Gwynnel. As many airline travelers can attest, when traveling alone, seat mates frequently get chatty, especially on non-stop, coast to coast flights. English travelers are amazed at how most Americans when traveling reveal so many bits of information about themselves to strangers. The American rationale is: it’s such a huge country and the odds of ever seeing one other again is highly remote. So what’s the risk?

The dialogue between Janet and Josh says a lot about our civic discourse, social mores, our working lives, and our frustrations in dealing with our families and friends. Janet, is sharp-tongued because she’s dealing with a ‘flight from the

Josh, an outgoing, social guy now begins to ease Janet’s anxiety by acting as a volunteer advisor. It’s his way of paying life’s benefits forward. He left his family’s button factory business seeking new and exciting opportunities. Although, he’s currently between jobs, Josh

is always upbeat; but no more spoiler alerts from me. You will just have to see for yourself how Mr. Bryant and Ms. Gwynnel, in highly nuanced performances, resolve their character’s situations. A great deal of the success of this entertaining comedy rests with director Harmon whose light touch brings out the best in her two stars. Their comedy timing is impeccable and a joy to watch.

Cuomo’s set, is a pitch-perfect lighting design by technical manager Moira Wilkie Whitaker that allows the audience to appreciate the costumes designed by Julie Onken; with Hair and Makeup designs by Lynda Shaeps, along with an excellent spot-on sound design by Kate Fechtig.
