“Class of 2019” You Just Graduated from High School. What do you do next? By Janice Gough Today’s senior students find themselves in one of the most competitive jobs and graduate school markets in a generation. In past years, we have determined that to get ahead, one needed to get a college degree, and many employers will not interview or consider those who have not completed

that level of learning. However, it is essential to determine, as a parent, if your student is ready to commit to their dreams. It is a costly investment if your student learns that college is their time to party. Some students do not thrive well in structured situations. Most students have already established whether they are ready to work hard to achieve their goals. However, some students need time to develop

and go their direction before going to college. Having ethical counselors, advisors, and mentors are required to provide a plan of leadership. The most important thing a parent can do is to find a counselor who will advise your student of the best way to proceed. Such a relationship provides students with real-world advice, the best way to pursue their dreams and someone who can serve as a cheerleader along the Road.

Some students can learn far more by reading independently, quite frankly. The idea of everybody going to college should be a non-starter. Instead, it’s being sold as some human right. Some of the most genius and wealthy people today have mastered their craft on their own. However, those seeking degrees in the Science and Medical fields or who do Laboratory work, need college to succeed.

Soon-to-be graduates must confront, and sometimes overcome, traits and tendencies that could impede their efforts to land a job or secure a seat in graduate school. While confidence is high, they should also be prepared to deal with disappointments, failure, and setbacks, so this does not hold them back from the desire to reach their goals.
