By Janice Gough Today’s senior students find themselves in one of the most competitive jobs and graduate school markets in a generation.

In past years, we have determined that to get ahead, one needed to get a college degree, and many employers will not interview or consider those who have not completed

that level of learning. However, it is essential to determine, as a parent, if your student is ready to commit to their dreams. It is a costly investment if your student learns that college is their time to party. Some students do not thrive well in structured situations.

Most students have already established whether they are ready to work hard to achieve their goals. However, some students need time to develop

and go their direction before going to college. Having ethical counselors, advisors, and mentors are required to provide a plan of leadership. The most important thing a parent can do is to find a counselor who will advise your student of the best way to proceed. Such a relationship provides students with real-world advice, the best way to pursue their dreams and someone who can serve as a cheerleader along the Road.

Some students can learn far more by reading independently, quite frankly.

The idea of everybody going to college should be a non-starter.

Instead, it’s being sold as some human right. Some of the most genius and wealthy people today have mastered their craft on their own. However, those seeking degrees in the Science and Medical fields or who do Laboratory work, need college to succeed.

Soon-to-be graduates must confront, and sometimes overcome, traits and tendencies that could impede their efforts to land a job or secure a seat in graduate school. While confidence is high, they should also be prepared to deal with disappointments, failure, and setbacks, so this does not hold them back from the desire to reach their goals.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Readies for Phase III

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – A federal program committed to improving the health of Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes is moving into its third phase. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative follows five-year action plans and is taking public comments through tomorrow on its

proposal for Phase Three.

Rick Graham, a board member with the Lake Erie Foundation, explains that since its launch in 2010, the initiative has spurred projects that have benefited the lakes by reducing toxins, restoring habitat, and preventing the influx of invasive species.

“Water is so important

to our state, for health, for jobs, for opportunities for our future generations,” says Graham. “I think water may be the resource that is most limited in our future especially if they keep violating it the way we are with different kinds of pollution.”

Phase Three will continue the work of the

initiative’s priorities, including safe water for recreation and drinking, keeping fish safe for consumption, and the restoration of a healthy ecosystem. The plan is expected to be in place by October.

Phase Three includes a focus on delisting Areas of Concern, which include the Cuyahoga River and Maumee River in Ohio.

So far, four of these socalled “toxic hotspots,” have been delisted, and Director of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Office Chris Korleski says the actions have been completed for eight more.

“You can dredge all the sediment and you can do habitat restoration, but you need to monitor after you finish the work to see if you’re hitting your targets,” says Korleski. “Then, you can say you’ve addressed that environmental impairment, and when you’ve addressed all the environmental impairments, then you

can delist the AOC.” Korleski encourages Ohioans to review the Phase Three plan, and offer their opinions.

“If someone says, ‘Well, they seem to be overlooking this,’ or ‘I think they’ve got their priorities a bit out of order,’ then certainly those are comments that we would welcome,” says Korleski.

“This is just an opportunity for the Great Lakes public to provide their two cents, which is extremely valuable.”

Congress has invested more than $3 billion on roughly 4,000 restoration projects over the past nine years. A 2018 study estimated that every federal dollar spent on the initiative’s projects in its first six years will result in roughly three dollars in additional economic activity for the region through the next two decades.

Blood Pressure Kiosk Saved Life of “Walking Time Bomb”

By Desert Star Staff BALTIMORE – That blood pressure machine at the grocery store might just save your life.

This past February, a blood pressure kiosk was installed at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Baltimore to help people monitor their cardiovascular health. The machine has proved to be quite popular, with close to 2,000 people getting their blood pressure checked since its arrival.

However, for Jackie Simon, a woman who randomly decided to use the kiosk, she believes it saved her life.

“I was a walking – basically, I was a walking time bomb,” says Simon, a former instructor at the community center. “I could’ve had a heart attack or stroke at any time...between the high cholesterol and my pressure being at the highest.”

Despite being physically fit, Simon had alarming readings showing extremely high blood pressure. After a check with her doctor, she was immediately placed on medication and given instructions to follow a lighter, more safe workout regime.

Doctors attributed the heart attack risk to her genetics. Health experts recommend routine checkups to catch potential health issues.

Simon says her story is living proof that hypertension can affect anyone. Despite being an exercise fanatic and

leading a healthy lifestyle, she was still at high risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

She says she learned a valuable lesson and encourages others to regularly check their blood pressure, even if it’s just at the grocery or drug store, so it could prevent untimely medical issues and even death.

“I saw the machine there,” says Simon. “I said, ‘Nope, nobody’s over there. Just out of curiosity, I’d love to see what my pressure is.’ So I took my pressure and it wound up

being 200 over 100, and I thought, well this can’t be, there must be something wrong with the machine.”

Stories like Simon’s are not uncommon.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 75 million Americans have high blood pressure, or 1 in 3 adults.

Organizations such as the American Heart Association recommend routine checks of blood pressure. It also has guides on its website, heart. org, to better understand blood-pressure readings.

I had employment before leaving high school, so I went to college part-time and worked part-time to pay for my studies, similar to internships. College advisors should begin talking about internships, relevant summer jobs, and work/study experiences on the first day of college. This will help your student to understand the value of a good work ethic and respect that they are a partner in paying for their livelihoods.

Conversations about post-graduation plans should be addressed at least a year or more before graduating, as there are many options to consider. Proper planning produces the best results.

Success in college is defined as a predictor for success in the workforce or grad school. It, however, is not a guarantee that all aspirations will be fulfilled; students should not expect that good grades will

The report, available on the center’s website, was released in conjunction with the March of Dimes and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

One serious and surprising issue for U.S. health care has been an unexpected rise in the number of women dying in childbirth. However, Joan Alker, the Georgetown Center’s executive director, states that are getting women

into the Medicaid system actually are reducing maternal mortality rates. She said it’s the best way to address what she called a crisis.

“We are really the only very developed country that’s seeing that, and that’s very troubling,” she said. “For states that have not expanded Medicaid, Medicaid expansion is clearly the single most important step a state could take to address this crisis.”

According to West Virginians for Affordable Health Care, expansion also has proven to be good for getting pregnant women who are addicted to drugs into the substance-abuse treatment they need. The group has said that’s better both for the women and their children.

Hollywood Vampires at Fantasy Springs

They brought “Hollywood Vampires” to the stage. What a gigantic show and production. Hollywood Vampires consisted of the iconic rapper, Alice Cooper, guitarist Joe Perry, and Actor Johnny Depp. The whole place erupted in screams when they took to the stage. Fans stood for a lot of the performance so they could raise their arms, dance by their chairs, sing and sway to the music and take photos.

The cheers and clapping were nonstop after each song.

The seats were filled with fans of all three performers. Some fans even took extra time to come dressed like Alice, wore Alice T-shirts and hats, and other forms of clothing or props to signify their fan status of the band. I saw Perry and Depp t-shirts too and more. Excitement filled the air as fans took photos and videos on the cell phones to keep or show friends later. A magical night for Vampires.

The show was amazing, and Alice sang a lot of his hits. There was a tribute to musicians that have passed away too soon with photos of them in the background with

He told of a 3 am meeting at a bar with celebrities that was the idea for, Dead Drunk Friends. Alice said as you all know, I have always been a villain. A lot of the audience were Alice Cooper fans, but many walked away as BIG fans of the rest of the band too.

Alice Cooper has made a name for himself over many years, 5 decades, and creates new fans where ever he performs. He is considered the Godfather of Shock Rock with his over the top performances that he did with huge boa snakes and even a guillotine at times. Alice changed costumes

several times, and during one song wore his signature top hat and cane. He has managed to stay on top in the world of music with his innovative ideas for concerts. He is the consummate performer.

Actor Johnny Depp can really play the Guitar and sing.

He looked like he was really enjoying himself with big smiles to the crowd. Depp seemed to have his own fan base in the corner by the stage with lots of young girls trying to get his attention. Some did as he tossed a guitar pick to a few and shook hands or touched hands with a lot of his fans. Depp sang Heroes, during the tribute to

‘Apollo 11’ Details the 1969 Moon Landing In 1961 President Kennedy committed the United States to land a man on the moon within the decade and then bring him safely back to earth. It has now been a halfcentury since the spacecraft “Apollo 11” left earth behind to fulfill Kennedy’s challenge.

The date was July 6, 1969.

In his documentary “Apollo 11” filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller chronicles this earthshattering event showing how scientists prepared for the historic flight to the moon.

We then watch as three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins suit up. They board Apollo 11 and are launched into space. Traveling at 25,000 miles an hour they speed to their destination, the moon- 240,000 miles away.

From the vantage point of the astronauts, we look out into space and see our planet earth below, like a beautiful blue marble. As they orbit the moon, before landing, we view the moon’s powdery gray cratered surface. Collins remains aboard the lunar orbiter as Armstrong and Aldrin prepare to land on the moon’s

surface. Once the Eagle has landed, Armstrong opens the door and steps on the lunar surface saying, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

After leaving his footsteps on the face of the moon, Armstrong places an American flag in the moon’s soil. Data gathering equipment is set up.

Next soil and rock samples are gathered to take back to planet earth. In the song, we speak of “the man in the moon,” but at this point, two men are standing on the moon.

It’s a great accomplishment in world history.

President Nixon acknowledged the astronauts said, “Our nation is one in our pride and one in our praise for what you have done.” For the first time in world history, man had left earth behind, leaving human footprints on the surface of the moon.

Using recently discovered archival footage and audio from NASA, filmmaker Miller chronicles one of man’s greatest achievements.

While we watch us feel as if we are a part of this grand adventure. The film is rated G

and is 93 minutes in length.

Hail and Farewell. This past week we lost two beloved performers--Doris Day, followed by Tim Conway.

Doris Day began her career as a big band singer in 1939.

One of her earliest hits was “Sentimental Journey” with Les Brown. She then went on to make 48 films, including “Calamity Jane,” “Pillow Talk”

with Rock Hudson and “The Man Who Knew Too Much” with Jimmy Stewart. She retired from films at an early age and became an animal rights activist. She left us on May 13, at age 97. Cause of death was pneumonia.

Tim Conway made us laugh for years. He appeared in films like “The Apple Dumpling Gang” with Don Knotts, but is best known for his TV work on “The Carol Burnett Show.”

Tim was a wild and crazy guy who often cracked up co-star Harvey Korman during on-air skits. Even Carol had to keep from laughing when he did something totally unexpected.

Tim had six children. His son Tim Conway Jr. hosts a comedy talk show on KFI radio.

Like his dad, he too can make us laugh. Tim passed away on Tuesday, May 14, at the age of 85. He will be missed.

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Robocalls to Washingtonians are picking up, and AARP Washington has launched a new campaign urging people not to fall for their scams.

Washingtonians received nearly 560 million automated calls last year.

Doug Shadel, state director of AARP Washington, says harassing and threatening calls from people who say they’re with such agencies as the Social Security Administration or Internal Revenue Service actually are the most successful scams, according to a survey being released today.

“Some of them are positive messages like, ‘You’ve won

money,’ and some of them are these fear-based tactics,” says Shadel. “And what we found is that significantly more people respond to the fear tactics than to the promises of wealth. And so, that’s really disturbing.”

More Than a Nuisance: Groups Launch Campaign Against Robocalls tactic scammers use to get Washingtonians on the line, known as “neighbor spoofing,” where calls come from a local area code.

According to the group’s survey, three in five Washingtonians say they are more likely to pick up calls from a local area code, and nearly half are willing to pick up calls from an area code where family or friends live.

Shadel says this is undermining caller ID: “Caller ID is no longer a reliable way to determine who’s on the phone because it’s so easy to spoof the number, to just make up a number to make it look like it’s local, when it’s not.”

Along with no longer relying on caller ID, AARP Washington also suggests folks use call-blocking services like Nomorobo or You Mail,

independently verify the identity of the person calling, and report fraud to law agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission or state attorney general’s office.

“Invisible Tango”

By Lisa Lyons Ah, sweet mystery of life, at last, I’ve found you... in the form of an unassuming yet brilliant close up magician named Helder Guimarães whose one-man show is currently gracing the Audrey Skirball Kenis stage at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse.

The small theater has been transformed into a mid-century modern apartment with an elegant bookshelf back wall filled with fascinating items that look innocent, but...one never knows in this tour de force, ably directed by Frank Marshall. Yes, that Frank Marshall, the award-winning producer, and filmmaker, who helped bring “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and other Spielberg hit films to life.

But, I digress. From Guimarães enigmatic first appearance, where he tells a story of his first car accident in Los Angeles, to his final philosophical musings 80 uninterrupted

minutes later, Guimarães lays out the premise for the show, for his life and maybe yours too: Everything happens for a reason.

Borrowing from the timehonored tradition of close up magic that engages audience members in the sleight of hand tricks, Guimarães charmingly interweaves personal stories about his discovery of a handwritten journal he finds in an antique store that pulls him into a multi-year quest to discover the identity of the author, himself a magician. We also hear about his enigmatic friend Gabriel, a retired clown once painted by famed portraitist Bernard Buffet. If you have ever been amazed and confounded by the magical disappearance/ reappearance of a card, or by the prestidigitator’s uncanny ability to be able to read an audience member’s mind or predict their action in advance, this is the show you must see.

Kudos to the Geffen for bringing Guimarães back to the

Playhouse. His previous show for them, “Nothing to Hide,” was one of the most popular shows in Geffen history. This is a finely tuned vehicle for its star who also wrote the book with help from Dramaturg Amy Levinson. Moby contributes a sensual, atmospheric original score recorded and performed by him and the East Side Jazz Monkeys.

Designer Elizabeth Harper, and Sound Designer Alex Hawthorn are all integral players in this production, and their work is outstanding yet understated.

Part memoir, part prestidigitation, “Invisible Tango” is lovingly underpinned with a philosophical motif that what is life without mystery. At one point, Guimarães offers the audience a chance to find out exactly how he pulls off each of his unbelievable feats;

director Marshall says that no one has taken him up on the offer so far. Perhaps we still need to believe in magic in a world that is desperately seeking to reclaim its soul.

“One out of every three bites of food that we eat exists because of pollinators,” says Egenhoff. “We’re giving back both to the community, but we also are creating a nice habitat for people and birds and bees and butterflies to live together.”

Egenhoff says the new landscape gives these critical species a place to rest, and refuel. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, declines in pollinator populations in North America are primarily due to loss of habitat through the use of toxic pesticides, monocrop production, suburban sprawl, industrial development and off-road-vehicle use.

Egenhoff says when the garden first bloomed, birds

were quick to take notice, along with various critters drawn to the strawberry patch.

“We had actually Monarch butterflies come through and they stopped and feasted on our garden and on our flowers for days,” says Egenhoff. “So that was quite a sight to see.”

Like people, pollinators need water, food and shelter.

Egenhoff says keeping a standard Kentucky Bluegrass lawn green in Wyoming requires a lot of water, but offers no rest for pollinators whose migration routes span hundreds and even thousands of miles.

“And lawns that we have out there provide almost zero habitat, and they use a huge amount of water resources,” says Egenhoff. “So converting your landscapes can help transform your traditional lawn to a sanctuary.”

Half of Ohio Adults Say They’ve Tried Marijuana COLUMBUS, Ohio — As substance abuse-prevention advocates from across the state gather for an annual meeting today, a new poll reveals nearly half of Ohio adults have tried marijuana.

According to data from the latest Ohio Health Issues poll, 1-in-3 of those who have tried the drug have used it in the past year. Marcie Seidel, executive director at the Prevention Action Alliance, said organizations with the Statewide Prevention Coalition Association will discuss the survey results, which she explained will help them determine future substance

“The more people who will use marijuana as adults, the more access and availability and the lowered perception of risk is to young people,” Seidel said.

The polling found that usage has remained steady the past several years.

Medical marijuana became legal in Ohio this year, and an increasing number of states are legalizing recreational use. However, the survey does not reflect medical use versus recreational use.

Seidel said as attitudes toward marijuana become more favorable, there’s been

an increase in misinformation.

She explained more education is needed about the differences between marijuana, medical marijuana, CBD oil, hemp and other cannabis products.

“I’ve had a couple of people who are fairly high up in our government system say to me, ‘Medical marijuana is really great because it doesn’t get anybody high.’

That’s a total misinformation, totally inaccurate,” she said.

“And people expect them to have the answers and the knowledge to be able to share.”

on ways to enhance and sustain substance misuseprevention strategies within their communities. Seidel said one of the biggest pieces of prevention starts at home.

“When parents talk to their young people often, not judgingly, share good solid information with them, young people are 50% less

likely to even start using substances or experiment with substances or drugs in their youth,” Seidel said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the US. The Ohio Health Issues poll found no income differences among adults who have tried marijuana, but those ages 65 and older are typically less likely to try marijuana than younger adults.
