The film was shown in the large Camelot Theatre, and there were no empty seats. An A-list of Celebrities arrived to see this film about their friend and fellow entertainer, Peter Marshall, Gavin MacCloud, Roberta Linn, Lola Rossi, Alex Korey, and local radio personalities, Melinda Reade, Joey English and Bill Finegold to name just a few. The list of friends was equally as long. The line of fans to enter the theatre started an hour early so they could get a good seat as they knew it was a sold-out show.

The Documentary was Kaye Ballard telling about

her life, her start in show business, her career and how she learned the trade. I think I am not alone when I say I remembered Kaye mostly as a singing comedienne but the documentary blew me away when she just sang. Her voice was fantastic, and she sang some of the songs for the first time before others made them famous. She was told she could have been an Opera star but was happy she chose this life in the theatre. Her credits are enormous on stage, in the movies and television.

The list of shows she was on TV was a lot more than I remembered and brought back memories of these TV shows.

Kaye mentioned that she felt so lucky to be in these shows with some of the most famous people in the industry, people she admired. She told

how she would watch the stars and learn from them. Kay used her intelligence to make her a household sensation on TV and in the movies. She said she was smart in some ways and made some major dumb mistakes along the way. There are many ups and downs in the entertainment industry when trying to make it a career.

Her slapstick type humor along with her talent kept her working for years. She said that so many of her friends and fellow actors were kind, talented, caring and helpful.

There were only a couple that she said made life miserable and were not nice. She mostly had glowing praise for all her peers. Her fellow actors said she has always tried to help others in their careers by telling people to check out their talent. This documentary

was so well done it kept you continually looking for more.

The audience was so silent most of the time but when a clip showing Kaye singing or on TV they would clap loudly.

Many well-known celebrities praised Kaye in the Film and told about how they knew her and performed with her.

Kaye along with the producer, Tim Pierson, and the Director, Don Wingate held a Q&A after the film. There were few questions as most people were just thrilled to let Kaye knows how beautiful she was and how they loved the movie. Most fans told of her generosity, humanity and what a lovely voice she had.

Supporters said she could do anything, sing, dance, play the flute, be a comedienne and a consummate performer.

Not many artists today can

say that which makes her a specialty in the theatre.

Kaye was such a warm human being up on stage when she said she was so glad that people stayed thru the whole film and didn’t walk out. She said many times she loved everyone in the audience and thanked them many times.

She said she felt so lucky to have so many fans and the career she chose. So many of Kaye’s friends and fans wanted to tell her they loved the film and wanted to thank her that the stage was filled with well-wishers. I-phones were busy taking photos of her and asking her to pose with them. I hope they show the film again so many more people can see what a great performer and singer she was in this documentary.

Native Tribes to State: No Grizzly Trophy Hunts

By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – In preparation for a vote this week on a proposed grizzly bear hunting season, tribal nations from across Wyoming, seven other states and two Canadian provinces have sent letters to Wyoming Game and Fish Commission

officials opposing the move.

Herb Welsh, a spokesman for the Northern Arapaho Elders Society, says the bear is considered to be a sacred relative integral to their culture.

“The grizzly bear is a sacred animal,” he stresses.

“He’s a sacred being. This is how our ancestors have

always believed. But even taking one grizzly bear life, because someone somewhere has pockets deep enough to afford that tag, that license, that’s wrong.”

The U.S. Interior Department ended 42 years of protections by taking the grizzly off the endangered species list

in June of last year. A lawsuit was filed by the Sierra Club and others in August arguing that the delisting was premature due to a decline in food sources.

Wyoming officials say the hunting plans - removing 22 bears, including up to 12 females - are meant to prevent population declines.

A tag will cost Wyoming hunters $600, and $6,000 for out-of-state residents.

The tribal letters outline what they say are breaches of historic treaties enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, should Wyoming proceed with the hunt, as well as violations of laws including the American Indian Religious Freedom Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.

Welsh says the Northern Arapaho Elders Society simply wants state officials to recognize their sovereign rights.

“And it was created for the protection of our ancestral ceremonies and also for the protection of our sacred sites,” he explains. “These are all issues that our traditional form of government has authority over, and they have the first and last say in these areas.”

More than 200 tribal nations that signed a treaty to protect the grizzly say the solution is not killing the bears in a trophy hunt. They’re asking that the bears be relocated to tribal lands with suitable habitat. Wyoming’s wildlife commission is expected to vote on the hunt Wednesday.

Young adults are wise to begin financial planning early

need to invest themselves in learning. Most have never been trained to save or feel the need to, as most have live comfortable lives with all their needs filled by their parents.

I applaud all parents today who make their children get jobs, so that they can begin to pay their own way. More may be learned from working your way thru college, than the studies themselves.

There are certain attributes that one gains in struggle.

They are appreciation, pride of accomplishment, cocoordinating efforts with others, goal setting, time management, respectability, overcoming failures and the ability to set goals. These traits will provide more security for a young person than having a ton of money to spend and a cushy life.

It does not matter the amount that one can save out of every paycheck, it is far more important to establish a habit of saving. Savings should be placed on auto-

pilot, because as soon as that hard cold cash reaches one’s hands, there are thousands of things on their wish list, and the thing that they spend the most time doing, the internet, will provide a gazillion more ways to spend easily. When our rainy day arrives, we all experience the rewards of saving and planning financially.

When a younger person begins to make money this is the most important time to become educated on financial planning. Including a basic financial course in their studies is important in any career. Investment clubs are very inspiring and a great learning tool.

When you are young invincible, and on your way up, why think about a will, a medical or a financial power of attorney? Young people feel that it is so far into the future, they do not give it priority.

Young adults may not actually need a will until they are married with children or have accumulated assets significant

enough to need protection.

Once they have children a will is necessary to designate a guardian for the minor children. No one is invincible, and accidents can happen.

It’s important to prepare for these situations, no matter how remote the possibility may be. Over the age of 18, parents no longer have automatic rights to access medical records or to make legal or financial decisions on their children’s behalf.

As financial educators, we help young adults envision how life will look 40 years from now, and visually place themselves in that picture.

Most younger adults have experienced family medical situations and deaths.

They have experienced the problems of what the caretakers and descendents have had to face when there has been lack of planning and preparedness. Getting them to think about the importance of their own will is a starting point. Many

youth believe that, if they’re young and do not have a lot of money, they don’t need an estate plan. That is simply not true. They should begin having a conversation with their parents to discuss how the parent’s estate plan may impact them. Financial websites, like www.nolo. com and www.Rocketlawyer can provide tools and a fillable form, in which a “State specific”, Will, Power of Medical and Financial Attorney can be written.

Reserve accounts keep homeowner associations financially stable by accumulating money each month to roughly offset the ongoing deterioration of capital common assets – such as, for example, roofs, railings, decks, asphalt and other items which deteriorate with the passage of time.

An association which does not faithfully build its reserve balance each month is falling into debt – but the truth is not revealed until the association needs a major refurbishment and the association discovers it is unable to pay for the necessary work. Associations in such a position have three choices (all of them bad): delay the work, ask the members to approve a major special assessment, or mortgage the association’s financial future by making a long-term loan with

one of the banks serving HOAs (assuming the HOA qualifies).

Underfunded reserves have become such a problem that the California Bureau of Real Estate issued a Consumer Alert in September 2012 on the subject. Homes in underfunded associations, particularly condominiums, may have unintentionally misleading appraisals since appraisers are not required to examine the status of the association reserve account.

How Much Reserve Money Does Our HOA Need?

I live in small residentmanaged HOA. Our reserves are very low. Is there a minimum amount or percentage for reserves required by law? Also, is there a legal requirement for a regular audit?

Is there a resource I can access for basic legal requirements for HOAs? My sense is we are not fully complying with regulations and laws.

Thank you, F.S., Carlsbad Dear F.S.: No, there is no specific minimum percentage or amount of money required to be in an association’s reserve account, and the law does not specifically require that ANY money must be in the account. Instead, the law focuses on disclosure, in the hope that savvy homebuyers will realize that purchasing a home in a poorly funded association is less desirable.

Civil Code Sections 5560, 5560, 5565 and 5570 require, among other things, that all associations obtain a reserve study each three years, review it annually, and make extensive disclosures about the extent to which the HOA is accumulating the amounts of money recommended by the reserve study.

Is that ‘Junk’ in Your Attic or Basement Worth a Fortune?

By Desert Star Staff From baseball cards and sports equipment to postcards and toys, is that “junk” in your attic or basement dusty treasure or just dusty? We’ve all heard of families getting rich from the sale of rare memorabilia. So how can you tell if your stuff is valuable and how can you sell it, if it is?

“The general rule is that the older the item, the more valuable it is. 1980 is not old.

1960 is kind of old. 1910 is old,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction

Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that has helped many families identify and sell valuable items.

In one instance, Crisafulli determined that a family’s baseball bat that spent decades beside their front door to protect from intruders, was actually used by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig -- and Love of the Game Auctions sold it for them for more than $430,000.

He is offering these tips to help determine if

your items are valuable: Baseball Cards: Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be extremely pricey. Do they have sharp corners, no creases and retain original gloss? Do they depict star players and Hall of Famers? A Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner or Mickey Mantle will sell for more than non-stars.

By Desert Star Staff If you think your history lessons in school were completely factual, you may be mistaken.

“Much of what you know about history may be limited or even wrong,” says Marc Wilson, author of “Kidnapped by Columbus,” a new historical novel. “All too often, legends, poems and myths are emphasized in favor of more complex truths.

History is usually written by the victors, not the victims.”

What that in mind, here are four historical facts that may surprise you.

Columbus a Kidnapper: “In 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue,” says the famous poem that most Americans know. But Columbus never landed on or even saw North America, and when he sailed in the Caribbean and along the coast of Central and South America, he kidnapped natives to act as guides in his search for gold and the Garden of Eden.

At the end of his first voyage, he kidnapped six natives from the island of Hispaniola and took the “Indians” to Spain to prove that he’d reached India. Native Americans have been mislabeled as “Indians” ever since.

“While many around the world hail Columbus as a hero, even honoring him with a U.S. federal holiday and naming cities after him, his actions led

to the exploitation and deaths of millions of people. He was a great sailor and explorer, but he traded in slaves and brought devastating diseases to the New World. He opened the door for Cortez to conquer the Aztec Empire, and for Pizarro to conquer the Inca Empire,” Wilson adds.

Washington’s Cherry Tree: As the myth goes, young George Washington couldn’t tell a lie and confessed to his father that he damaged his cherry tree. However, one of his biographers, Mason Locke Weems, had no such problems with the truth and invented this whopper in the fifth edition of his Washington biography, entitled “The Life of Washington” in 1806.

And Washington never wore wooden dentures, either. He had different dentures made from gold, ivory and even lead.

Napoleon: Not Short: Napoleon wasn’t actually short. At the end of his life he was measured at 5 feet 2 inches -- which sounds short until you learn this was in French inches, which are longer than British inches.

In today’s inches, the fiery tyrant actually stood around 5 feet, 7 inches, which was slightly taller than the average European man of his day. He also employed tall soldiers in his personal guard, which made him seem shorter by comparison.

Jackie Robinson: Not

First: Jackie Robinson was not the first African American to play baseball in the major leagues. While he was the first in the modern era, breaking into the National League in 1947, way back in 1884, Moses Fleetwood Walker played for the Toledo Blue Stockings as catcher.

The team was part of the American Association, one of three major leagues of its day. Baseball maintained segregation for many decades after this and Robinson became the first player to end this segregation in April, 1947.

So, how can those interested in history go about arriving at the truth? From, historical novels to primary source materials, reading beyond the textbook can give you a more complete and accurate history. StatePoint

Pre-1950s catcher’s masks, baseball gloves and bats can be valuable, especially those endorsed by star players.

Condition is important but used equipment can be valuable.

When you go to sell sports items, consider a specialty auction, such as Love of the Game, which has the expertise to properly research sports pieces, and maintains lists of bidders specializing in this area so it can get top dollar for these items. Postcards: Postcards of your vacation destinations likely are worthless. But those depicting famous people,

such as movie star cards and vintage baseball postcards, can be valuable. Look for early “real photo” postcards from the 1900s through the 1940s, which are photographs printed on postcard backs.

No matter the type, the older, the better, and the more famous, the better.

Old Halloween or Christmas postcards from the early 1900s can be expensive. The same goes for many intricate “holdto-light” postcards, where portions of scenes light up when held to strong light.

Toys: Look for famous characters, such as early Walt Disney items, superheroes, Star Wars, etc. The most prized toys are those in original condition with no broken pieces and paint intact. And if you have original boxes, you might strike gold!

So, while you’re cleaning that attic, basement or garage, don’t rush to purge. Before throwing out old “junk,” determine if it’s valuable!

The Effects of Alcohol Can Be Deceptive…

If you are asked to explain the reasons behind your rules, you can describe the effects of alcohol on the human body: When people drink alcohol, they may temporarily feel elated and happy, but they should not be fooled. As blood alcohol level rises, the effects on the body—and the potential risks— multiply. Inhibitions and memory become affected, so people may say and do things that they will regret later and possibly not remember doing at all.

• Decision-making skills are affected, so people may be at greater risk for driving under the influence—and risking an alcohol-related traffic crash—or making unwise decisions about sex.

• Aggression can increase, potentially leading to everything from verbal abuse to physical fights.

• Coordination and physical control are also impacted. When drinking leads to loss of balance, slurred speech, and blurred vision, even normal activities can become more dangerous.

• Consumption of a dangerously high amount of alcohol can also lead to alcohol overdose and death.

• Vulnerability to overdose increases if the teen is already on a sedative-hypnotic or pain medication. When people drink too much, they may eventually pass out (lose consciousness).

That means people who have had too much alcohol could vomit and choke, or just stop breathing completely.

Think About It! Drinking to celebrate graduation can result in vandalism, arrests, sexual assaults, injuries and trips to the emergency room, alcoholrelated traffic crashes, and worse. “Hostiles”--The Western Returns With A Vengeance

“Hostiles” For a long time the “Western” seemed to have disappeared from view, but thankfully in Focus Films “Hostiles,” it has returned with a vengeance--literally.

The film, written and directed by Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart” with Jeff Bridges and “Black Mass” starring Johnny Depp) takes place in 1892 in New Mexico.

It opens with Comanche warriors riding in and killing a farmer. They then ride after his wife and three children desperately running away toward the woods behind their cabin. She lives, but her three children are shot to death-the baby dying in her arms.

We then cut to Capt.

Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) stationed at Fort Berringer in New Mexico. Much to his anger and disgust, Blocker is informed by his commanding officer that his last assignment before retiring will be to take Chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) and his family back to their homeland in Montana.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire held a special fundraising luncheon on May 16th at the beautiful Ritz Hotel. There was a huge silent auction at the back of the room that saw a lot of activity with bidders.

President/CEO Greg Wetmore thanked the guests for coming and encouraged them all to make donations for the bicycles that are given to kids with disabilities. Greg announced that there would be 30 minutes of entertainment before lunch was served.

He wanted everyone to enjoy the particular show.

David Green’s Musical Theatre University MTU

brought a dozen or so young performers from the Coachella Valley to sing and dance for the guests. These young men and women showed extreme talent. Almost each of the performers did a solo of singing, dancing or reading a poem. The troupe started with some very upbeat dancing and singing some well-known songs. Later in the program, they read poems that could have been written by someone who has a disability. Some of the songs after each poem were meant to enhance those poems. Very emotional and the performers sang with much of the same emotion that the verses stated.

A special treat in the show

was the singing by Janene Lovullo. Lovullo has starred in many Broadway Productions, like The Pirates of Penzance, Les Miserables, and Cats.

She is also a cabaret performer and a recording artist. Her rendition of, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, brought cheers from the audience. The group performed that night at the Purple Room in Palm Springs.

The show was so well received that people wanted to know if they would be coming back to the next UCP event.

for years and thanked Desert Lexus for their continued support also. He said that he hoped guests would make significant donations for the bicycles. They already donated 54 bikes to kids and adults with disabilities, and there is a long waiting list. These bikes give them freedoms they didn’t know possible.

Each Bike is custom made for each and costs between $3,000 and Insurance does not cover $5,000 and. Micki James continues the fight against Cerebral Palsy that her husband Dennis James started so many years ago.

Demitrious Sinor, the Chairman, spoke to the guests and mentioned his life growing

up. His parents were told he would never walk, never go to college and would not have a healthy life. He proved them wrong as he has done all that and more. He said people are 10% of what happens to them and 90% in what they do with what they have. Its Life Without Limits that UCPIE strives to achieve with their many programs. UCPIE has a mission to advance the independence of all people with disabilities, not just Cerebral Palsy, but all disabilities. They want them all to have a Life Without Limits and help them with what they can do and more.

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – A Northwest immigration-rights activist is heading back to court in her battle against deportation today.

Maru Mora Villalpando is an organizer with the Northwest Detention Center Resistance.

In December, she was issued a deportation notice, despite the fact that Villalpando does not have a criminal record.

Her first court appearance was in March. That same

month, the U.S. Department of Justice set quotas for immigration judges aimed at speeding up deportations.

Villalpando says like others, her case has been fast-tracked. She says in the past, a case like hers might take months or even years.

“In a way, it’s very simple how immigration law functions because there’s really very few resources for us immigrants to access due process,” she says. “And so we expect that

the whole processing itself might not take too much time.”

Villalpando says she wants to make her case public to help people understand that the vast majority of immigrants have no path to legal status.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement say it didn’t target Villalpando because she is a prominent political activist. Her supporters are gathering at 12:30 today outside the Seattle immigration court where

her hearing is being held.

Villalpando expects one more court date before she is ordered to be removed from the country or detained.

The mother of a 20-year-old daughter, she says deportation orders are tearing up families.

She points to the Trump administration’s consideration of holding immigrant children at military bases - something the Obama administration also considered in 2015 but didn’t follow through with after

public pressure. She says this suggestion is inhumane.

“This is the result of a system that was created precisely to destroy families,” she adds. “It’s just gotten so bad because we have allowed ICE to do these horrible things against our communities.”

Today, Villalpando also will announce her lawsuit against ICE for its failure to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request in January for documents on her case.

Hawaii power plant shuts down after lava from Kilauea volcano flows onto site

By Desert Star Staff A geothermal power plant has been forced to completely shut down after Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano entered a more violent stage, shooting fountains of red into the vicinity

and threatening the release of toxic gases from the site.

The wells run 6,000 to 8,000 feet (1,829-2,438 meters) underground to tap into extremely hot water and steam used to run turbines and produce electricity.

The capping is the latest measure to be taken at the plant, which has been closed since Kilauea first erupted on May 3. Authorities previously removed the highly flammable chemical pentane from the site.

“County, state, and federal partners have been collaborating closely to

monitor the situation and work with PGV to ensure the safety of the surrounding communities,” county officials said, as quoted by Reuters.

Kilauea has entered a more violent stage which has seen larger amounts of molten rock oozing from the ground and traveling a further distance. Its most recent eruption took place at around 6pm local time on Monday.

Lava began hitting the Pacific Ocean over the weekend, creating yet another hazard for the Big Island’s

residents. That hazard is known as ‘laze,’ a mix of hydrochloric acid, steam, and fine glass particles which is created when hot lava hits the cooler sea water. It can cause lung, eye, and skin irritation, and even death.

At least 44 homes and other structures have been destroyed as a result of Kilauea, and 2,000 people have been ordered out of their homes. A man was also seriously injured on Saturday, after a plate-sized chunk of molten rock shot out of a fissure and struck him on the leg.

Vote Today on Creating a CA Online Community College

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposal to establish an entirely online California community college is set for a vote in a subcommittee of the state Assembly Wednesday, but many instructors say they are wary of the idea.

The governor wants to spend $120 million now and $20 million each year thereafter for an online community college that would target people who have no post-secondary education.

But Wynd Kaufmyn, who teaches in-person and online engineering courses at the City College of San Francisco, thinks working adults who go back to school need the support of a campus community - and worries that an all-online approach would lead to more dropouts.

“I can’t think of anything

more wrong-headed,” she says. “It’s duplicating efforts that are actually better placed to serve the students. I think the best way to go is to fund the programs and the wraparound services that will ensure their success at their local community colleges.”

The governor says he hopes a new online community college would fit better into students’ busy lives and entice the 2.5 million adults aged 25 to 34 in this state who have a high school diploma but nothing more. However, some educators worry that it would simply drain students from existing community college programs.

David Lau, an adjunct English instructor at Cabrillo College in Aptos, says he favors the hybrid of in-person and online courses that most community colleges currently offer. He adds that busy adults are more likely to succeed if

“In face-to-face course offering, as an instructor you can often make all kinds of different attempts to intervene, offer assistance, mandate that

they come to office hours, give them makeup assignments for missed work, and you’re much more likely just to see a student disappear from an online course offering,” he explains.

If the subcommittee votes

the proposal down, the online college becomes a conference item between the California Senate and Assembly. If it does pass, then it goes to a separate vote of the full budget committees of both houses.

Acknowledging there are voices in the US skeptical about the summit and the prospects of denuclearization, Moon said that the “fate and future” of the Korean Peninsula hinge on it.

Asked about his vision for the Korean peninsula, Trump said he was “looking at having two very successful Koreas”

at first, and then it would be “largely up to them” whether to unify down the road.

He described the border between the two Koreas as “artificial” and imposed mainly by the US, during the 1950s Korean War. The Trump-Kim summit was scheduled after a historic meeting between Kim and Moon and Panmunjom in April.

However, the North Korean rhetoric escalated after US national security adviser John Bolton brought up the “Libyan model” of denuclearization, with Pyongyang pointing out that Washington led a “regime change” operation in Libya in 2011 after Tripoli surrendered it’s nuclear research materials to the US in 2003.

Trump distanced himself from Bolton’s remarks last week but told North Korea that the Libyan model of regime change might ensue if the peace talks fail. His vice president Mike Pence later echoed the message.

Summit with North Korea in June may be delayed – Trump

Savory Zucchini and Fontina Muffins

2 green onions, finely chopped 12 cubes (1/2 inch each) fontina cheese Heat oven to 400 F. Line 12-cup muffin pan with large paper liners.

In large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. In separate bowl, whisk 1/4 cup pesto, olive oil, milk, sugar and egg; stir into flour mixture until moistened. Fold in zucchini and green onions.

Divide half the batter evenly among muffin cups; place cube of fontina on top of batter. Top each with 1 teaspoon remaining pesto; top with remaining batter.

Bake 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and top of muffin springs back when pressed lightly. Let cool slightly; serve warm.

Tip: To make extra savory, add 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon.

Tomato and Tortellini Soup

1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 package (12 ounces) fresh cheese tortellini 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley grated Parmesan cheese, for serving In large saucepan over medium heat, heat oil; cook onion, garlic, carrot and celery about 5 minutes, or until softened. Add pesto, basil, oregano and chili flakes; cook 1 minute. Add tomatoes, chicken broth, salt and pepper; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer about 20 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

In blender or using immersion blender, puree tomato mixture; return to pan and bring to simmer. Add tortellini; cook 8-10 minutes, or until tender. Sprinkle with parsley and Parmesan.

Tip: Dried basil can be substituted for 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil, if desired.

Heat oven to 400 F. Halve spaghetti squash lengthwise and scrape out seeds; drizzle cut sides with 1 tablespoon olive oil and season with 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Bake, cut sides down, on parchment paper-lined baking sheet 45-50 minutes, or until tender.

Let cool slightly. Using fork, scrape strands of squash into bowl; reserve squash shells.

In skillet, heat remaining oil over mediumhigh heat; cook chicken, onion and remaining salt and pepper about 5 minutes, or until chicken is browned. Stir in pesto; bring to simmer. Cook about 5 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through. Stir in cherry tomatoes; cook about 1 minute, or until slightly softened.

Toss spaghetti squash with chicken mixture; divide among reserved squash shells. Top with mozzarella cheese; broil 1-2 minutes, or until cheese melts. Sprinkle with chopped basil.

Tip: For a more savory dish, add chopped black olives or jarred artichokes, if desired.

CVHIP.com Includes Links to Almost 1,000 Health and Wellness Resources in Coachella Valley

By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA – Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, in partnership with the City of Palm Springs, unveiled a significant new internet-based platform, providing access to free and low-cost services and resources to support the health and wellness of everyone in the Coachella Valley. Called CV HIP (Coachella Valley Health Info Place), the easy-to-navigate site is a free online information center with links to nearly 1,000 Coachella Valley health and wellness resources and providers. The site (in multiple languages) enables anyone to find providers that offer programs on a wide range of wellness and healthy living topics, including information about health screenings, Diabetes, food & nutrition, senior services, sexual health, counseling, pediatric healthcare, local sports & recreation, food assistance, financial & legal aid, and much more.

“Creating CV HIP was an

extensive project and one that had not been done before in the Coachella Valley.” said Herb K. Schultz, Desert Healthcare District & Foundation CEO. “We held extensive conversations with area social workers and case managers to understand the challenges they experienced while connecting people with the services they needed.

These conversations revealed a common issue: whether the clients were seeking information on food pantries, substance abuse treatment, housing alternatives, or employment services, it was a challenge to efficiently match people with the community organizations that could help them.”

The first step in this process was to identify all of the free and low-cost services/resources available to Coachella Valley residents and merge them into an easy to navigate website, available in multiple languages.

Even the best websites can be out of date, which meant that the District team needed to establish a method for the

public and service providers to update their information on an ongoing basis. To support this, service providers in CVHIP will be contacted on a regular basis to keep their information current, thus ensuring an accurate database.

Roberts has been a champion of the project since funds were allocated from the proceeds of the ‘Mayor’s Healthy Planet Healthy You 10 mile and 5 K Race and Wellness Festival.’ “This is a major advance in terms of helping people to get, and stay, healthy. By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Civilrights advocates say a Supreme Court ruling handed down Monday will sweep many discrimination and harassment claims against employers under the rug.

The ruling in Epic Systems v. Lewis says corporations can require employees to sign arbitration clauses that keep them from joining classaction lawsuits over wage and civil-rights violations, including discrimination

and sexual harassment.

Seema Nanda, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, says the ruling is particularly troubling in light of the Me-Too movement.

“We know that when women are able to band together and bring an action against their employer, they have strength,” she says. “It’s very difficult for employees to go through these things one by one, and arbitration is just not as strong a forum as the courts are.”

Supporters of arbitration say it is cheaper and more efficient than litigation through the courts.

But according to Nanda, arbitration often favors the corporations.

“First of all, it’s just one individual against a company, whereas in a class-action lawsuit, you can have the power of the employees,” May 23, 2018

she notes. “The rules are much stronger in federal court. Often, the remedies are stronger as well.”

She adds that the corporations often choose the arbitrator, leaving the employee without representation.

Justice Neil Gorsuch, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, wrote the majority opinion in the fiveto-four decision. But as Nanda points out, Gorsuch acknowledged that Congress can act to prohibit corporations from forcing employees to agree to arbitration.

“They can legislate around this decision, which is very troubling and really undermines what we think are employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act,” explains Nanda.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights had joined in an amicus brief filed by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in the case.

“Soft Power” a triumph at LA’s Ahmanson Theatre

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) The American Theatre is in a state of flux and has been since the millennium arrived. Satisfaction is the enemy of innovation, growth, and thinking outside the box.

America for all its creativity, eagerness for new shiny objects and ideas, however, is quite comfortable in its various creative arts ruts.

According to German writer and dramatist Bertolt Brecht, “The role of the arts should not be limited to just holding up a mirror to society, but be a hammer with which to shape it”. Controversial? Yes. Today’s playwrights and writers are churning out creative work that your fathers and grandfathers would not necessarily approve.

This is the internet/digital age.

Communications and information comes to the creative table quickly and changes just as quickly. One has to be constantly plugged in to be relevant.

Playwright David Henry Hwang’s newest musical play “Soft Power”, now enjoying its world premiere on the stage of The Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles, is an excellent example of readdressing the domination of White culture of the West to the rising prominence and influence of Asian societies along the ‘silk roads’ of the East. Hwang is a prolific American-born playwright of Chinese ethnicity.

Trying to explain the two act plot of Hwang’s brilliant comedic and insightful, think-piece is complicated but not inscrutable.

It’s a little akin to Winston Churchill’s famous quote of trying to untangle the philosophy and the politics of the Russian government to a fellow politician.

“Russia is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. It’s complicated, but there is a key.”

One ‘key’ is the collaboration of Jeanine Tesori and Mr. Hwang as co-creators, with Ms. Tesori’s wonderfully evocative musical score and additional lyrics that so beautifully captures the spirit of the East and then blends it with the culture of the West.

Playwright Hwang, who penned the Tony-winning production “M. Butterfly” (1988) and Drama Desk nominated “Yellow Face” (2007) and the delightful comedy “Chinglish” (2011), among others, challenges his audience to confront and accept the idea that the planet has more than one alpha-male dominating culture and society. In many ways, the musical goes against a self-image that most Americans hold dear: rugged individualism and American exceptionalism.

especially from the ensemble performers. For those who follow Mr. Hwang’s career arc, they will note the echoes in this stellar production reminiscent of his delightful 2011 comedy “Chinglish”. That story featured a love affair between an American business executive and a female Chinese government official while he was on a business trip in China. Ms. Silverman directed “Chinglish”, as well.

Both plays explore the language and cultural gaps between Chinese and Americans; a frequent theme in Mr. Hwang’s body of work, however, this time the romantic algorithmic connection deals with Zoe, an American woman (Alyse Alan Louis) and a Chinese gentleman (Conrad Ricamora), both of whom are the possessors of wonderful singing voices. Ms. Louis belts with high energy in in Act One leading the ensemble in a series of hilarious musical numbers that allude to America’s current political machinations and explanations without ever referring directly to the current inhabitant in charge. The name is selfevident based on the hoops and hollers, and the laughter emanating from the audience.

Remember, it’s a musical comedy – depending, however, on one’s political leaning.

Conrad Ricamora as Xue Xing, reflects not only his personal philosophy, but that of China’s aspiring new role in global politics. In the play, they eschew raw military or hard power, preferring the label of practitioners of ‘soft power’.

They prefer to influence world opinions with trade, political ideas, and peaceful non-military solutions as a way of becoming the new world leader. Mr. Ricamora , renders a terrifically polished, stylish, understated performance, as the avatar of Chinese ambitions in the future.

There is a third major character in this highly entertaining production: None other than that of David Henry Whang himself. The actor who portrays Mr. Hwang on stage is Francis Jue who delivers a solid, empathetic, portrayal as the quasi-narrator of the musical. I would humbly submit that perhaps, Mr. Hwang is a fan of the great movie director Alfred Hitchcock, who always inserted an image of himself as character into every film he made. However, it’s not that unusual in Mr. Hwang’s case. He was a character in his 2007 play “Yellow Face”, playing himself.

In Act Two, the stage heats up again with the performance of Ms. Louis. This time she’s playing Hillary Clinton. Yes, that Hillary Clinton! It’s a dynamite performance by a consummate singer/ actor/ dancer at the top her game. No more spoiler alerts from me, but remember it is a political comedy/parody production and should be experienced in person. Director Silverman gives her skilled

cast the green light to go full speed ahead, which they do in spades. The standing ovation at the curtain call lasted for over a minute. I checked my watch. It was richly deserved.

On the reality check aspect of the overall production, I would submit that the political comedy lacked subtlety at times, and had a tendency to hit one over the head with a hammer, making sure we got the bit and the metaphor. It may be a bit sophisticated or too on-the-nosey for some, but the audience on opening night definitely got it.

The Ahmanson Theatre is the proper sized house and stage that gives Scenic Designer David Zinn plenty of leeway in delivering a performing space for this excellent production to breathe. Supporting cast members include: Billy Bustamonte; Jon Hoche, Kendyl Ito; Austin Ku; Raymond J. Lee; Jaygee Macapugay; Daniel May; Paul Heesang Miller; Kristen Faith Oei; MariaChristina Oliveras; and Geena Quintos. Well done all.

In the technical department led by director Silverman whose impeccable timing throughout the evening keeps

The costume designs of Anita Yavich, and the lighting design by Mark Barton flood the Ahmanson stage with color and light becoming a visual feast for the eyes and the ears, along with the Sound Design of Kai Harada. The high-octane choreography of Sam Pinkleton

keeps everyone on their toes under the musical baton of Music Supervisor Chris Fenwick.

‘Soft Power”, makes for a splendid evening of music, dance, and comedy that performs at the Ahmanson Theatre and runs through June 10, 2018.
