in play for both the winner and the one who lost but would be back another day to win.

Doubles matches held a few surprises when the Number 1 Bryan brothers lost to the finals doubles winners Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock. Doubles finals were held on Sat. to a sold out crowd. Martina Hingis and Sania

Merza won women’s doubles.

Fast play is one of the things I like about doubles matches as players are all over the court.

The Semi Finals brought a relative newcomer from Canada to face Federer. Milos Raonick served up some of the fastest aces out there with speeds in the 140 miles per hour

Eggstravaganza at Living Desert

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT/INDIAN WELLS, CA -- (March 23, 2015) – Egg-cellent family fun awaits you at the annual two-day Easter “Eggstravaganza” at The Living Desert on Saturday and Sunday, April 4th and April 5th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Over 10,000 eggs will be hidden in Gecko Gulch for one of the biggest Easter egg hunts in the area. There will be four different hunts offered each day, as well as a special egg hunt for adults only. Adult egg hunt winners can walk away with tickets to Brew at the Zoo, special zoo tours and more.

One of the highlights of each egg-citing day is a visit from the Easter Bunny. The Easter

Bunny along with his friends will be strolling the zoo and taking pictures with guests.

A variety of entertaining activities are planned including Easter crafts, face painting and a photo booth. There are plenty of chances to win fabulous prizes like free zoo admission, animal plush toys and more, with the always-entertaining peep-eating contest. Kids will also enjoy the bounce houses and a special animal encounter.

The crowd was behind Federer as they would stand and cheer and clap loudly after he won a tense volley. One match went to

‘Stars Among Us Gala’ at the Mizell Center

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Mizell Center held its 10th anniversary “Stars Among Us Gala” at the Palm Springs Air Museum on March 21st. The theme this year was, An Evening At The Apollo, and presented

by Eisenhower Health and Harold Matzner. The event honored several deserving people and charities. Guests entered the Air Museum through a hallway with draped curtains on the wall. The Dining area was decorated the same with drapery all over the walls. The reception was held in another room filled with beautiful lights and decorated tables.

The Entertainment was by Hitzville-The Show and a Motown iconic couple, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. The night was a trip down memory lane with a Motown revue, One-Night Souled Out. McCoo and Davis hail from the 5th Dimensions group and said the group had never played the Apollo Theatre, but that they had. The duo has had great success as a couple and have had many gold and platinum records and received seven Grammys. As emcees, they told about the wonderful work Mizell does with its Meals on Wheels program along with all the other work they do for Seniors. A video was shown with all the well-known artists that had played at the Apollo over the years.

The Stars Among Us 2015 was Chris O’Hanlon, who received the Shining Star Award, and The Gold Star

Achievement Award were given to the Desert AIDS Project and were accepted by Barbara Keller.

Modernism Week was given the Galaxy Award, and the award was accepted by Lisa VosslerSmith. These three exceptional honorees were chosen for the fantastic work they do in the whole Coachella Valley. CoChairs for the Gala were Dr. Ronald and Carol Fragen and Eric Rudolph and Bob Iles.

Hundreds of guests enjoyed the superb entertainment along with a delicious meal. Mizell Center provides 140,000 Meals on Wheels each year along with over 40,000 meals at senior centers. The Center has over 3000 active members and co-chairs Dr. Ron and Carol Fragen with Eric Rudolph and Bob Iles provides another 170 programs yearly. They strive to keep seniors healthy and active with a list of services that goes on and on and has been doing it for over 40 years. Seniors spoke about how the Mizell Center has kept them alive and well and don’t know where they would be without the help they get from Mizell. Mizell prides itself by serving more seniors in one day than other charities do in one year. There is no waiting list for assistance as they help all who are in need. One 94-year-old woman told the guests that Mizell had given her back her life as she now has many friends, Seated are Lori and G. ACT for MS Beach Party II

Story and Photos by Pat Krause ACT for MS, <Multiple Sclerosis> held its Beach Party II at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort Spa’s Esmeralda’s Ballroom on March 20th. The event honored the memory of Singer Frankie Randall, who passed away just a few months ago as Frankie was a huge supporter of ACT for MS. Honorary Chairs were Rhonda and Ray Smith as their son is a victim of MS and support ACT for MS. They underwrote the band and the invitations for the evening. A special thank you went to the Auen Foundation that has supported ACT for MS since the beginning. Gala cochairs were Suz Hunt, president and Gloria Greer, founder.

Funny man Scott Record does amazing impressions and had the audience in a happy laughing mood for the entire evening. He has so many talents as a singer, dancer, actor, musician and comedian that it is hard not to love his showmanship. Dean Torrence from “Jan and Dean” with the Surf City Allstars performed for

has been kind to, never knowing she is actually a magical presence.

In the Tony Award winning musical “Cinderella,“ now at the Ahmanson Theatre, playwright Douglas Carter Beane has updated the original book by Oscar Hammerstein II, adding plot twists and plenty of contemporary comedy without losing the fairytale’s charm and magic. And speaking of magic, the costume design by William Ivey Long is totally amazing; particularly in Cinderella’s wardrobe transformation in Act I when the fairy godmothers Marie (Kecia Lewis) tells Cinderella (Page Faure) to believe. In the blink of an eye, her ragged dress becomes a dazzling white floor length ball gown. How did they do that? And it happens again in Act II when her tattered togs to suddenly turn into a gorgeous form fitting golden frock.

The scenic design by Anna Louizos also bedazzles, from the tall trees in the forest surrounding the quaint cottage where Cinderella lives in the palace and ballroom settings. Adding to the fun is the transformation of a pumpkin into a glimmering coach and a raccoon and fox into a footman and driver.

In the original Rodgers and Hammerstein musical the prince was urged to marry by his parents, the king and queen.

In this revised version Prince Topher (Andy Huntington Jones), like Cinderella, is an orphan.

According to Beane, “ I made them both feel that they were alone in the world “ making them kindred souls in more ways than one.

Another twist, dating back to the original Perrault plot, is one stepsister; Gabrielle (Kaitlyn Davidson) actually likes Cinderella who upsets Cinderella’s stepmother played

by Fran Drescher. Adding to the comedy is the very round stepsister Charlotte (Aymee Garcia) who belts out the musical lament “Why Would a Fellow Want a Girl Like That?” bemoaning the fact that the prince has chosen the slender mystery maiden at the ball.

On opening night there were plenty of little girls dressed in princess gowns, but you don’t have to be a child to fall under the spell of this totally captivating production filled with music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. And the two leads not only can sing, they dance divinely. “Cinderella” is a wonderful way to spend an evening.

The newest Disney film version of “Cinderella” stars Lily James (Cousin Rose on TVs “Downton Abbey”) and she is a breath of spring. It’s easy to see why the prince (Richard Madden) is charmed by her when they meet by chance in the forest. She finds him attractive as well, but rides off without telling him her name. She has won his heart by her sweetness and kind manner, but before he can find her again his father (Derek Jacobi) decides to host a royal ball so his son can meet a suitable princess and marry.

As the film begins we meet Ella and her loving parents.

Sadly, when she is quite young, her mother dies. After many years, her father (Ben Chaplin) marries a widow (Cate Blanchett) who has two daughters of her own, Drisella (Sophie McShane, Daisy on “Downton Abbey“) and Anastasia (Holliday Grainger).

They are cute, but also vain, greedy and very unpleasant to their stepsister following the death of her beloved father.

As a child Cinderella was taught to be kind and courageous, and she lives up to these high standards despite the constant cruel treatment inflicted on her by her cold and calculating stepmother. Her real mother also told her she would be protected by a fairy godmother who turns out to be a beggar woman Cinderella has been kind to, played with gusto

And like the Perrault classic, there is intrigue in the court as the Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgard) attempts to become the power behind the throne following the death of the king.

who takes us through the lush countryside and into the hearts and emotions of two special sweethearts. The movie is perfect for this upcoming holiday season, and like the Disney animated feature of long ago, there are those adorable mice who live with Cinderella in her attic bedroom.

I saw “Cinderella” at the beautiful El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Prior to the film, there was a stage show featuring the singing, dancing snowman from “Frozen” and a colorful series of lights and forms projected around the theater. If you see “Cinderella” at the El Capitan, bring along a

camera or smartphone so you can photograph the costumes which are displayed in the lobby and downstairs at the theater.

You can also register to win a Blue Ball gown worth hundreds of dollars that are similar to the one Cinderella wears in the film. Tell me more: Joe Bonamassa is one of the world’s greatest living blues guitarists, and like many of the genre’s modern-day proponents he is always looking for an opportunity to honor the greats who paved the way for him. The newly-released “Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks” (available DVD and audio CD) honors both Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf via a special concert filmed at Red Rocks Amphitheater over Labor Day weekend in 2014. Shout Factory’s ongoing series of four-episode sets of the series includes season five’s “Hercules,” the Steve Reeves-starring 1958 film scored by the great Italian composer Enzo Masetti. The ladies match between Jalena Jankovic lasted well over 2 hours. The long volleys between the two were heart wrenching to watch as each player looked exhausted after a long run before one would make a mistake and win. Simona Halep fought hard to win and become another first time winner at the BNP. Jankovic said she was just happy to be in the finals after a leg injury before the BNP. They both said they are looking forward to returning next year. A college tournament was held during the last few days on the practice courts and other stadiums. The main stadium was saved for the singles and

doubles final matches.

It’s hard to beat watching this caliber of tennis play. It’s no wonder that record attendance was broken again this year with 456,672 people attending. Day match records were broken too with over 16,000 at the finals on Sunday. A lot of the matches were sold out in advance and there were only a few seats in the top tier that were empty. Cheers rang out for the players and flags were waved from their seats. Some would chant ROGER ROGER and they were louder than cheers for Djokovic. This tournament grows faster each year as more and more improvements are made to delight the fans with talks brewing of a third stadium in the near future.

Festival of the Desert Launches Event at Sunnylands

By Pam Price The Festival of the Desert, an ambitious one-day program of classical music, cuisine, and a session on The Future of Arts in America’s launch on March 18th at Sunnylands Center & Gardens with Philippe Jordan, Festival Music Director welcoming guests. Barrett Wissman followed him. Chairman of IMG Artists is the event’s co-founder and director.

Mr. Wissman thanked the principal benefactors, Gregory and Regina Weingarten and the Annenberg Foundation, Harold Matzner and Marc and Eva Stern.

Following the opening

remarks a morning concert entitled “The Genius of the Emigre Composer” was performed. This was an exploration of the works of the great emigre composers of the 20th century and their influence on the American music tradition. The performance featured Angel Romero, guitar, Christopher, piano, Mikhail Korzhev, piano, Ilana Davidson, soprano and the Rosseti Spring Quartet. Lunch in the gardens of the estate followed featuring a menu designed by Spencer’s Restaurant ( in Palm Springs) with specialties such as local Indio melon soup with fresh mint and edible garnish of flowers.

The program concluded with a

‘talk & discussion’ focused on the Future of the Arts in America presented by Michael M. Kaiser the former President of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The Festival Advisory Board included Steven Biller, Geoffrey Cowan, Renee Fleming, Anne Taubman and Steve Pougnet, Palm Spring’s mayor.

This innovative program was precisely curated linking the past to the present as the hours moved on. After Renee Fleming and Philippe Jordan’s concert at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, a Gala Reception was held at Sunnylands Center & Gardens with musical performances

curated by Quincey Jones and a dance program curated

by David Hallberg featuring dancers Veronika Part and Maria Kowroski. The dinner “curated

by Cat Cora” was also a work of art featuring some of her specialties, such as orange and chili rubbed beef tenderloin with Basque Style “fresh herbs” green sauce.

Barrett Wissman was enthusiastic about the launch of the Festival of the Desert on many levels and what makes it unique. “I think the idea of cross collaborations between art forms and having a great singer (Renee Fleming) with a great actor or a fantastic chef with a wonderful

visual artist. His opinion of Palm Springs as the epicenter of the event went further. “Palm Springs has a wonderful air and spirit. One feels that immediately, it is neither excessively large nor too small, and there is audience already there. At the same time, it has an intimacy of a place away from the traffic and noise of everyday life. It is in this ambiance one can enjoy the arts.”

Palm Canyon Theatre Presents a Lush “Secret Garden” Musical

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The Layne Family of Palm Springs and founders of the Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) hit two home runs in one week.

On March 13th the family was honored by Bob Marshall, President of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars who presented its 382nd Star to theatre founder and family patriarch Dr. William Layne, in a ceremony attended by 100 patrons, supporters, and invited guests. The permanent plaque honoring the Layne family’s contributions to the Valley Arts Scene over the last eighteen years, was placed squarely at the entrance to the theatre, located at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive.

The second home run came one week later on March 20th with the opening of the musical “The Secret Garden”, lovingly directed by Dr. William Layne that features members of his family: his eight year-old granddaughter Ava and his ten year-old grandson Wyatt Tethal, his daughter and theatre Managing Director/coartistic director and Actor Se Layne, and son J.W. “The Secret Garden” with music by Lucy Simon and lyrics and book by Marsha Norman is a timeless tale of a special place where magic hope and love reside. Boasting a cast of twenty-two performers led

by Lyric-Baritone Chris Sands and Baritone Mark Almy, the production features a talented company of actor-singer-dancer performers.

Based on the 1911 novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the Palm Canyon Theatre production is the story 10 year-old Mary Lennox, a young English girl (Ava Tethel) born and raised in In India and the daughter of English Captain Lennox and his wife Rose (Angela Delaire). When a cholera outbreak strikes, Mary is left an orphan and is sent back to Yorkshire, England to live with Archibald Craven (Chris Sands) and Neville Craven (Mark Almy), two uncles she has never met.

Eventually her own personality blossoms as she and Dickon, the young gardener (wonderful played by Nicholas Sloan) bring not only new life to a neglected

garden on the estate but also brightens up the dreary manor house owned by her two uncles.

Mary also brings a healing breath of fresh air to her sickly cousin Colin Craven (played

by Wyatt Tethal, her real-life brother) and she generally lights up the dark and musty corners of the manor house much to the servant’s delight; especially Martha, the chambermaid and friend to Mary (nicely played and sung by Alisha Bates; last seen at PCT in “A Chorus Line” as Diana Morales).

With a cast this large it’s not possible to list everyone, however, there are always standouts in every successful production. And this show is no exception. The musical numbers from Norman and Simon are lush and rich, and in the hands of Sands, Almy, and Tethal they still resonate today. Especially the touching and haunting numbers

by Sands and Sylvia Tethel who plays the beautiful Lily in “A Girl in the Valley” and “I Heard Someone Crying”. Also, the penultimate moving duet “Lily’s Eyes” in the first act between Sands and Almy: is a poignant number that March 27, 2015

displays the range and power of these two splendid singers.

Nicholas Sloan’s comedy garden number, “Winter’s on the Wing”, is a folksy number that’s delivered with wit and energy.

In the second act, Sands’ “Race You to the Top of the Morning” along with “Where in the World”, and the musicalending duet “How Could I Ever Know” with Tethal as Lily, are all show stoppers. Which brings me to the astonishing, just-turnedeight-year-old, adorable budding actress Ava Tethal. The part of Mary is usually played by an actor who is 11 or 12. The character is on stage almost 75% of the time.

Her performance is nothing short of amazing. I see TV agents and managers and a career in show business if mommy and daddy allow. And the same goes for 10 year-old brother Wyatt, as well.

In the technical department, the scenic and lighting design by J.W. Layne renders a veritable onstage garden with woods, secret doors, and flowers, and plenty of room for the singers and dancers as well as actors in the interior scenes. The costumes designed

by Se Layne are beautiful, bright,

and eye-appealing. It’s visually apparent that former costume designer Derik Shopinski is back in the desert. Musical Direction in community or Regional theatre is a skill set in itself. Don Kelley has assembled a lovely score that compliments the performers and this impressive production.

In the sound department, however, a little work needs to be done. Sound designs in the Palm Canyon Theatre have always been tricky when it comes to balancing the audio level for the audience to be able to hear the dialogue or lyrics, and the need of the singers to hear the music in order to remain on-key.

It’s a thorny problem to be sure.

The night I attended, the floor in row three literally vibrated when the singing and the music, and the microphones all came on at the same time. Surely there must be a way to solve this problematic auditorium sound balancing act.

Can We Wait on the NFL in Los Angeles?

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles has not housed an NFL franchise since the mid 90’s. Over the last half decade, however, the idea of bringing the NFL back to Southern California has picked up more momentum than Jerome Bettis on first and goal. Not just bring one NFL team, though, bring TWO teams.

On Tuesday, the owner of the current NFL champion New England Patriots, Robert Kraft said he believes Los Angeles would have two NFL franchises by 2016. Kraft is someone with a lot of pull. When the owner of a dynasty like the Patriots says something, it usually carries a lot of weight.

Kraft is not the first person to think two teams are a viable option. Earlier in February, reports cam out of the Rams and the Chargers working out a deal to both move to Los Angeles.

It appears as if moving two teams to Los Angeles is actually a thing of consideration among the NFL’s elite. There is a notion among the Los Angeles media that fans have would more than

love to have a team to call their own, but is that really the case?

There are complications that no one is really considering.

The Rams and the Raiders left for a reason, right? Los Angeles will always be a Lakers and Dodgers town. Will the busy people of LA want to take time on their Sunday to drive on the same congested freeways that they take to work five days a week? Lets not forget why the NFL left in the first place People in Los Angeles would like to have pro football back but Angelino’s have been doing fine without it. With the emergence of fantasy football and things like the NFL Package on DirecTV, fans would rather watch from their couch or tablet.

With a come-late-leave-early reputation, what will happen if the future NFL team or teams are unsuccessful? No one in Los Angeles is going to want to drive and pay high prices for tickets to watch a losing product.

Additionally, is there really enough people to support two teams in Los Angeles? Why cant the NFL

just try one and see how it goes first?

Having virtually no stadium for multiple teams to play in is problem, too. There have been plans and ideas in the previous weeks but there is no actual stadium, yet. Downtown has the Coliseum and Pasadena has the Rose Bowl but those are not permanent or even good options for an NFL franchise.

Do not forget that tailgating – a huge part of football – will likely be impossibility in Los Angeles.

Lastly, and most importantly, if Los Angeles receives its football team and it fails again. That’s it; a team will likely not come back for a third go-round in a huge but distracted market.

Despite the aforementioned concerns, the NFL and Los Angeles together makes too much sense not to happen. Let’s just hope that all issues will be resolved before hastily hauling a team Southwest.

Even families who have saved for postsecondary education for years find themselves looking at ways to manage expenses as the cost of tuition, books and room and board add up. Exploring both traditional and non-traditional sources of financial aid can help

make those mounting expenses more manageable.

Schedule a meeting with financial aid. As soon as you have settled on which school you’ll attend, contact the financial aid office and request an appointment with an advisor. If you’re within a drivable distance, it’s a good idea to meet in person and develop a relationship with someone who March 27, 2015

can help you identify potential aid sources you might not have considered otherwise. Closer to home, do the same with your high school counselor, who can keep an eye open for scholarships that match your credentials.

Explore association scholarships. Many professional associations and member-based organizations offer competitive scholarship programs. Check with the major employers in your area, particularly any in your chosen field, to find out if they offer any scholarship or grants. You can also check with family members to determine what organizations they belong to and whether you are eligible for any funds. Making the most of potential resources to pay for your degree lets you keep your focus squarely on your studies so your next big cause for celebration can be your college diploma.
