Story and Photos by Pat Krause Bianca Rae, Local TV personality, Journalist, Humanitarian and founder of the Bianca Rae Foundation received the 416th Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on June 2nd. Over 100 people attended this star dedication.

Many had chairs that were set up, and others stood or sat

by the fountain. Rae said she chose the location of the star because it was one of the first places she visited when she moved here. The Star in located near the fountain and the Sonny Bono Statue at 149 South Palm Canyon Drive. Rae is the youngest recipient of a Star in the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

KMIR Vince Marino Palm Springs, CA -The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector control District says it’s expanding its search area for a mosquito -- capable of carrying the Zika Virus in Palm Springs.

Palm springs resident Kevin Crain was at home Monday when he got a knock at the door. It was a man from Vector Control and he asked to inspect his backyard.

“I said absolutely, have at it. I unlocked the gates, he walked around the perimeter, checked everything. We have a pretty big pool and a fountain he checked all that,” said Crain.

The inspection was free and only took about twenty minutes but the reason behind it was more

than Crain expected.

“Palm Springs has become the hotbed right now of Aedes Aegypti detections in all of the Coachella Valley. The detections there are growing faster, we’re finding more of these types of mosquito in more areas than any other place in the valley,” said Jill Oviatt, public information officer for the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District.

Initially Vector Control believed they knew where the mosquitoes were concentrated. But after setting a few traps last month they were surprised to see how many of those traps tested positive for the Aedes Aegypti Mosquito.

The Miniature star who is usually given did not make the dedication and would be presented later. Proclamations were given designating June 2nd as Bianca Rae Day.

Bianca Rae spoke and said she knew as a child she was going to be Bianca Rae and would drop her last name Goutos but she is proud of her last name and her family.

A soaring musical dramedy revival of “The Spitfire Grill” at NCRT

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The world of today appears to be in constant turmoil. Culture wars and shooting wars abound here in America as well as on every continent on our fragile planet.

Everyone stares too long and make judgments far too quickly when it comes to the strangers we find in our midst.

We rely on our tribal or family loyalties, the cornerstones and touchstones of a civilized society that at times is necessary but in so doing robs us of enlightenment and the pleasures that comes when societies reach out culturally to one another. Take the metaphor of food, as one example of how we have expanded our gustatory experiences and horizons over the years. Our American melting pot society is filled with success stories where one can see the advantages and possibilities that a diverse society provides.

The current North Coast Repertory Theatre revival production of “The Spitfire Grill”, a musical dramedy written

by James Valcq and Fred Alley with music by Valcq and lyrics

by Alley, is a shining example of the power some ‘outsiders’ can bring to the table or to a community if just given a chance. Intelligently, sensitively and seamlessly directed by Jeffrey B. Moss, with an inspired ensemble cast of actors who can sing (and boy, do they sing) this uplifting and warmhearted musical is just what American theatre audiences need right about now.

The story in short, centers around fiercely independent

Percy Talbott (a terrific Aurora Florence), a young, Appalachianaccented woman who has just been released from prison. Percy is looking to find a place for a fresh start in life. While in prison she read a travel magazine about the idyllic, small, rural town of Gilead, Wisconsin which sounded like a good place to begin her new life journey.

The local Sheriff, young Joe Sutter (Kevin Earley), who is also Percy’s parole officer finds her a job at Hannah Ferguson’s Spitfire Grill, owned by and operated by a force-of-nature earth mother solidly played by actress Devlin.

It’s the only eatery in the town and is frequented daily by loyal residents. The Spitfire Grill has been up for sale for ten years, but has never had any interested buyers. Times have been tough for America’s Midwest economy and Gilead is barely hanging on.

Shelby Thorpe, the wife of the out-of-work local stone quarry foreman Caleb (Kevin Bailey) is a caring, young woman played by Soprano Meghan Andrews, who gently tries to make a home life while at the same time occasionally helping Hannah at the diner.

She endures the frustration of her proud husband Caleb, who resents her time spent at the Grill and her association with Percy. To further complicate matters, Shelby and Percy have become friends.

Post Mistress and town gossip Effy Krayneck, never misses a chance to open the mail before the addressees is nicely played and sung by Maggie Carney who makes the most of her comic relief role as Gilead’s leading gossip and busybody. Also, there is

And, that’s about as far as I’ll go with spoiler alerts. You will just have to see this splendid musical for yourself.

The real beauty of this production lies in the multitalented ensemble cast with a director who understands how to craft and shape compelling, poignant, comedic, and dramatic moments and performances from pros who are a joy to watch. Everyone is constantly in the moment.

On- stage chemistry electrifies the entire cast from the minute that Percy comes on stage and sets the tone for all the magic that follows with her song “A Ring Around the Moon”.

The story of “The Spitfire Grill” unfolds over fifteen haunting and poetic songs that conjure up echoes and aural memories of John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country

Road” along with Valcq and Alley’s original country/folk musical score that features such numbers as: ‘The Colors of Paradise’ sung by Percy and Shelby, ‘Forgotten Lullaby’ lovingly rendered

by Hannah, and the rousing “Shoot the Moon” by the company that ends act one.

In act two, the numbers ‘Wild Bird’ by Shelby, ‘Shine’

by Percy, and a poignant ‘Way Back Home’ by Hannah, bring the entire company back onstage for another rousing Finale.

The nicest part, at least for me, is that this highly entertaining musical is performed without one f-bomb being hurled from the stage. The musical’s creators substituted soaring music, soulful country lyrics, and sheer talent instead of relying on attention-grabbing street language pyrotechnics to win over its audience. However, in the name of transparency, this musical was written seventeen years ago in 2000.

My, how we’ve changed.

The production is designed

by Marty Burnett, lighted by Matt Novotny, with costumes by Elisa Benzoni, and sound design, by Chad Lee Thymes. The excellent musical accompaniment is headed by musical director Alby Potts on keyboard, guitar/ mandolin by Nikko Nobleza, violin by Catherine Gray, and cello by George Spelvin (that great old theatrical name). In the new and emerging discipline of projection design, Aaron Rumley is right on the money; not too many just the right amount to set the tone and enhance the moods. If I were to mention that some of the song lyrics were a wee bit too repetitious and went on too long, it would probably give my age away.

So I won’t. But the soring voices of the company made me forget all that repetition.

Rae foundation to help animals by being adopted, and they transport animals all over the country to no-kill shelters. The foundation holds a retreat for middle school kids who started with 100 six years ago and now

has over 500 this year. The foundation’s Fun, Hope & Pups, has raised more than $200,000 for local animal organizations.

Rae has been given many awards and emcee’s events each week for charities and

serves on a lot of local boards in the Desert. Rae speaks at schools and elsewhere to empower young kids. Rae wants to utilize her platform in TV to make an impact for something worthwhile in the Desert.

Californians Rally to Support Their National Monuments

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. Supporters of California’s parks and national monuments are to rally Thursday in Sacramento, planning to celebrate the expected passage in the state Senate of a resolution to keep those wild places intact.

The Trump administration is calling for a review of all national monuments designated since 1996 that comprise more than 100,000 acres, putting them at risk of being downsized or rescinded.

AARP ND President: AHCA a “Target” on Backs of Older Americans

By Desert Star Staff A Congressional Budget Office report found 23 million fewer Americans could have health care by 2026 if the American Health Care Act is passed. (skeeze/ Pixabay) June 7, 2017 BISMARCK, N.D. - AARP representatives from North Dakota and across the country are in the nation’s capital today to ask members of Congress to consider older Americans during their health-care deliberations.

AARP North Dakota President Kathi Schwan is meeting with Sens. John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., to warn them of the harms of a socalled “age tax” in the GOP’s bill, which would allow insurers to charge older Americans five times what they charge younger Americans. Currently, insurers are capped at charging three times as much.

Schwan said a proposal to cut Medicaid by more than $800 billion over the next decade would be devastating too, especially for nursing homes in rural parts of the state.

“Will it allow these smaller nursing homes in smaller communities to remain viable,” she asked, “when you have such a potentially drastic change to their revenue stream through Medicaid?”

A report from the Congressional Budget Office found the House version of the American Health Care Act would reduce the budget deficit by $119 billion by 2026. The report also found 23 million fewer Americans would be insured.

Under the Republicans’ plan, states could apply for waivers allowing insurers to charge more for pre-existing conditions. Schwan said 35 percent, or about 50,000 North Dakotans between ages 50 and 64, have preexisting conditions, which

means they could end up paying $25,000 a year in health-insurance premiums under this bill. She said the AHCA disproportionately tips the scales against older and poorer Americans.

“I think those that are low-income and over 50

absolutely have a target on their back with this current bill as it was passed in the House,” she said.

Senators have indicated that parts of the bill are likely to change.

By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. - The Financial CHOICE Act is being debated in the House of Representatives this week, aiming to ease restrictions on the financial industry put in place through the DoddFrank Act in 2010. However, new research warns that the deregulation would hurt U.S. service members.

According to the report, Protecting Those Who Serve, the bill weakens the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Report co-author Ed Mierzwinski, consumer program director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, said that in turn weakens the Office of Servicemember Affairs’ ability to defend military families against

predatory financial practices.

“The Financial CHOICE Act makes it almost impossible for the CFPB to protect anyone,” Mierzwinski said, “and that includes service members.”

Its supporters have said the bill, House Resolution 10, would remove blocks on economic growth. Mierzwinski argued that, by making the CFPB “optional,” it risks turning common issues such as debt collection and high-interest payday loans into bigger problems for military families.

The U.S. PIRG Education Fund and Frontier Group analyzed 44,000 consumer grievances from active-duty service members, veterans and their families. Mierzwinski said the most common complaint is pursuit by debt collectors. For

military members, he said, this has job-related consequences.

“Admirals and generals have routinely and often said that a leading cause of losing security clearance is a bad debt or a wrong debt,” he said.

Loss of security clearance limits a service member to lower-level positions, hindering his or her ability to earn more money.

The Financial CHOICE Act is expected to pass the House along party lines, but might not survive in the Senate, where lawmakers on the Banking Committee have shown interest in a smaller but similar bill.

By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – About 1 in 3 American adults experience a symptom consistent with a warning or mini stroke, but very few – 3 percent – take the recommended action, according to a recent survey from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

percent of all hospitalizations.

Dr. Jin-Moo Lee, director of Stroke Services at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, says 35 percent of respondents report having experienced at least one sign of a warning stroke, and those who did were more likely to wait, rest or take medicine than call 911.

“The treatments for stroke have to be implemented within the first several hours,

and so it’s really important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke so that patients can show up to the emergency room,” he says.

Signs of a stroke include sudden onset of weakness or numbness on one part of the body, severe headache, only being able to see out of one eye, and difficulty speaking.

Lee says strokes are caused by a blockage of an artery in the brain that cuts off blood flow. He says many people suffer a mini stroke, which is a stroke that reverses itself, and the symptoms go away, but he says that doesn’t mean everything is OK.

“These symptoms are transient,” he explains. “They come and go. Many people think that they’re benign.

“However they’re usually a warning sign that another stroke will occur. So capturing someone before that stroke occurs is really important so that prevention measures can be taken. “ Strokes are the second leading cause of death in the world, and number one cause of adult disability.

‘The Book of Mormon’--On A Mission To Make You Laugh

The Broadway hit “The Book of Mormon” is back in town for an extended run at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the long running “South Park” TV series, wrote the book and lyrics for the show along with Robert Lopez. Lopez, a star in his own right, wrote the music for the Disney smash hit “Frozen,” with his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

Remember, “Let It Go?” You will if you have kids.

The songs throughout “Book of Mormon” are zippy, zany and at times a bit “profanity.” But to their credit, and showing that Mormons too have a sense of humor and fun, they took out an ad in the “Playbill: saying “Our version is sliiiightly different.” (Yes, that’s how they spelled slightly.) They continue: “The musical is entertaining. The book? It’s life changing. Get a free copy at thebookofmormon.com.”

The show opens with young elders carrying their book in hand. They sing as they ring imaginary doorbells and introduce us in song to “The Book of Mormon.” Then we meet them again as they are getting ready to receive their missionary assignments.

Gabe Gibbs plays Elder Price and comes to this production directly from Broadway. He is a real charmer in every way.

Young Elder Price has been a star in all of his studies

and is praying that he will be assigned to mission to the people of Orlando—home of Disney World and Sea World.

Alas, no such luck. Instead, he discovers he’s off to Uganda.

Worse, yet, he has been paired with Elder Cunningham (Conner Peirson). How could this happen? However, with a stiff upper lip and plenty of self-pride, he decides to make the best of it. On the other hand, the plump, slightly daffy Cunningham is totally delighted.

Once they arrive in Uganda, the village they have come to save turns out to be a pretty scary place. And so far the other young Mormon elders there have not made even one convert. Worse, yet, there is a fierce General (Oge Agulue) who terrifies the villagers and the elders as well. On the bright side, there is the lovely Nabulungi (Leanne Robinson). Robinson, who hails from East London, has a beautiful singing voice.

She is a charmer and one of the first in her group to want to become a Mormon.

Elder Cunningham is smitten by her sweet ways and her interest in converting. On the other hand, Elder Price is ready to head home to Disney World. Depressed, he drowns his sorrow by drinking at least 8 or 9 cups of Starbucks. A big no-no for a Mormon.

While Elder Price is temporarily out of the picture, Cunningham decides to

By Desert Star Staff Filmmaker Michael Moore is urging White House staff and members of law enforcement to leak information about misconduct in the US government to his new website TrumpiLeaks.

The website contains encrypted messaging services such as Signal, Peerio and WhatsApp for whistleblowers to pass on sensitive data or documents anonymously.

Moore, famous for political documentaries such as ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ and ‘Bowling for Columbine’, has warned that leaking government information “might get dangerous.”

In a letter posted to the site, however, Moore said “we’re running out of time” to oust President Donald Trump from his position of power.

“From the time you opened this letter to the time you get to the bottom of it, there’s a decent chance that our president will have violated the constitution, obstructed justice,

lied to the American people, encouraged or supported acts of violence, or committed some horrible mistake that would’ve ended any other politician’s career (or sent you or I to jail),” Moore writes.

This complete setup is fruitful soil for laughter and plenty of anxiety for the young missionaries.

There are all sorts of witty song and dance numbers in the show as these diverse young elders discover that success can be worse than total failure. But what happens when the elder elders come

to call in Uganda? Well, there’s one good way to find out. However, if someone is your family might be offended by some risque religious references and humor, best to leave them at home while you come to the Pantages to laugh out loud.

Testimony Today on Keystone XL Pipeline Route in Nebraska

By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. - The battle over the Keystone XL pipeline is heating up in Nebraska.

The Trump administration gave a green light to the pipeline, and it’s up to the Nebraska Public Service Commission to decide if TransCanada will be allowed to construct part of the route through the Sandhills. The $8 billion pipeline would transport more than 800,000 barrels of crude oil from Canada’s Alberta tar sands to the Gulf of Mexico.

Supporters have said Keystone XL is good for the economy and will increase the nation’s energy independence. but Bold Alliance president Jane Kleeb contended that the pipeline never will be in the public interest.

“Nebraska yet again is at the heart of the resistance

against the pipeline,” she said.

“This is a foreign pipeline, carrying foreign tar sands, using foreign steel, and headed to the foreign export market.

No Nebraska oil is coming on, and no oil is coming off.”

Public comments will be taken at a hearing today in O’Neill, with local landowners, activists and concerned citizens expected to testify, along with representatives from TransCanada and the oil and gas industry. A third hearing with formal testimony is scheduled for early August.

Besides posing a threat to the economic viability of farmland in the state, Kleeb argued, the Keystone XL route crosses the Ogallala Aquifer, putting the drinking water for millions at risk. If the Public Service Commission grants the permit, she added, it will be the first time Nebraska

According to the Institute for 21st Century Energy, the pipeline would create more than 20,000 new jobs by 2020, including 300 in Nebraska.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Bianca Rae, Local TV personality, Journalist, Humanitarian and founder of the Bianca Rae Foundation received the 416th Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on June 2nd. Over 100 people attended this star dedication.

Many had chairs that were set up, and others stood or sat by the fountain. Rae said she chose the location of the star because it was one of the first places she visited when she moved here. The Star in located near the fountain and the Sonny Bono Statue

at 149 South Palm Canyon Drive. Rae is the youngest recipient of a Star in the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

Speakers included friends and co-workers from the TV station KESQ, Channel 3. Her parents and sister were there from Chicago. They spoke about their daughter with great pride. Her sister told about their childhood and her dedication to family. Her best friend also spoke about their friendship that has lasted through the years. speakers. Kathleen Bennett, a board member gave Rae a huge bouquet of flowers and a Star Pin. The Miniature star who is usually given did not make the dedication and would be presented later. Proclamations were given designating June 2nd as Bianca Rae Day. Bianca Rae spoke and said she knew as a child she was going to be Bianca Rae and would drop her last name Goutos but she is proud of her last name and her family. She thanked her fellow co-workers as they always have her back and support her. She thanked

all the volunteers who work at her foundation. She planned on being married and had children by age 26, but she said God had a different plan for her. She knew already in second grade that she wanted to be a voice for the voiceless, animals and children. She loves the glitz and glamour of the Red Carpets and interviewing but knew she was put on this planet for more.

Rae created the Bianca Rae foundation to help animals by being adopted, and they transport animals all over the country to no-kill shelters.

The foundation holds a retreat

for middle school kids who started with 100 six years ago and now has over 500 this year. The foundation’s Fun, Hope & Pups, has raised more than $200,000 for local animal organizations. Rae has been given many awards and emcee’s events each week for charities and serves on a lot of local boards in the Desert. Rae speaks at schools and elsewhere to empower young kids. Rae wants to utilize her platform in TV to make an impact for something worthwhile in the Desert.

The awards give talented local high-school students a chance to compete and represent the Coachella Valley. Winners have an opportunity to go to the National High School Musical Theater Awards, NHSMTA, that will be held in June. The event was held on May 31st with five judges choosing the winners. The Purple Room donated their restaurant stage for this event.
