FIFA: Blatter Resigns! That is a football hammer! Sepp Blatter (79) throws the towel and resigns as president of FIFA! By Desert Star Staff Now ‘Sun King’ Blatter has taken the consequences. After 17 years at the head of the world football’s governing body the FIFA, he resigns. However, until a successor has been found, he remains in office. At 6:30 pm Blatter appeared at the FIFA headquarters before the press and presented the breaking news bomb. Blatter

exhibited signs of extreme tension and spoke in French. Blatter: “I’ve been thinking seriously about my presidency, about the wonderful times at the FIFA. I love the FIFA more than anything else. I have decided to resign “He continued:” We need to initiate major reforms. We have to start these reforms immediately. We do not have control over the other FIFA

executive members, but we have a responsibility. I have fought hard for the changes, but I cannot do this alone. It needs new wind for these measures.” The Blatter resignation started at 6:30pm. Blatter was 17 years FIFA president; his resignation speech lasted exactly two minutes. Blatter: “I am so very connected to FIFA and its interests. I would like to thank all

Bruce Jenner debuts Caitlyn in Vanity Fair

After much talk, Vanity Fair covers Jenner’s transformation

By Leanne Italie Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - Bruce Jenner’s transition is complete. “Call me Caitlyn,” declares a headline on the July cover of Vanity Fair, with a photo of a longhaired Jenner in a strapless corset, legs crossed, sitting on a stool. Famed celeb photographer Annie Leibovitz

shot the image. Inside, more images depict Caitlyn in gold lame, a black bustier and an offthe-shoulder gown showing off ample cleavage. Jenner also debuted a new Twitter account with: “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.”

In about two hours, the account had more than 630,000 followers. According to the magazine, which took to Twitter with the cover Monday, Jenner spoke emotionally about her gender journey: “If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did Continues on Page 8

our supporters and companions. We now need time to find the best possible candidate for this office. “Blatter has been with FIFA since1975, first as a technical director, from 1981 then as General secretary. In 1998, he became the successor of President Joao Havelange. FIFA will convene an extraordinary congress to find a successor to Blatter. The

next scheduled Congress was supposed to be held in Mexico City on 12 and 13 May 2016. Much too late, the FIFA wants a new president as quickly as possible. The Congress will take place from December 2015 and March 2016. Until then, the Italo-Swiss Domenico Scala (50) is intended Continues on Page 11

PS Air Museum’s Memorial Day Flower Drop

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 18th Annual Palm Springs Air Museum’s Memorial Day Flower Drop honored 27 local families who lost loved ones that sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom. Banners with their names lined the parking lot. Their names were read in front of several thousand people that came for this annual event. Veterans and families brought young children to witness this special day to honor all our veterans from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. 3000 red and white carnations were dropped over the Palm Springs Air Museum. The white carnations were for those lost during the earlier wars, and the red carnations were dropped in honor of the more recent conflicts like Desert Storm, The Persian Gulf and of course the conflicts that are still raging like Iraq and Afghanistan. The day included a short program, Flight exhibitions by P-38s, P-51 and P-63, a Spitfire Supermarine and the T-28 and a Stearman-P-17 plus the B-25 that dropped all the carnations. The Heatwave Jazz Band entertained guests and there were many children’s activities plus Harpo the Clown was present for photos with the kiddies. It was a nice day for the Flower Drop and there were refreshments, a beer tent and plenty of food vendors to feed the crowd. A special honor was given to a 103-year-old flying Ace

from WWII. Fred Bell made the introduction. A local veterans group and Loretta Siani sang a couple of patriotic songs while the Color Guard made its entrance. Representative Raul Ruiz made the Congressional Gold Medal presentation to Gen. Fritz Payne, a local resident. 76 living Ace Pilots were awarded this medal in Washington D.C. on May 20th, but Gen. Payne was unable to attend that ceremony. He was honored in front of the several thousand people, many B-25 and Pilots local residents, who witnessed this great honor. Well, over 100,000 veterans have been killed in the line of duty defending our freedoms since 1775. That’s a heavy price to pay so we must always honor those who are still fighting to protect our freedom and our way of life. The Palm Springs Air Museum continues to preserve, educate and honor these veterans with the many programs they provide each year. The Museum houses many older airplanes and continues to restore and add to their collection. Many of the programs offered are for our younger children so the freedoms they enjoy will not be representative Raul Ruiz with Gen. Fritz Payne lost in time and those brave vets will never be forgotten.

By Desert Star Staff For couples planning a wedding, there is greater opportunity than ever to weave personal elements into every aspect of the big day. Many traditional “rules” of wedding planning have given way to let couples celebrate as they see fit – even including their four-legged family members and inviting guests to do the same. Whether you’re a bride whose furry friend will play a leading role in the festivities, or a guest bringing your pooch along for the party, these tips from the pet experts at PetSmart will help ensure your canine companions join the celebration in comfort and style. Put your pet to work. Think ahead about how your pet will participate in the fun: as a member of the wedding party, perhaps as ring bearer or flower girl? Give your pet a rehearsal run to be sure she’s up for the task. Choose a fur kid-friendly venue. If pets are welcome, make sure they’ll also be safe. For instance, avoid freshly fertilized lawns and plants, as well as flowers that are toxic to pets. Find out where your fur babies can go and where they need to be on a leash. If possible, give

your pet a few sneak peeks of the location. Don’t make pets suffer for fashion. Skip the puppy couture version of a tight pair of shoes or an itchy shirt tag, and choose a stylish pup-friendly ensemble instead. Made of lightweight, breathable materials, each piece of the Martha Stewart Pets® wedding collection for dogs features timeless design elements, simple color palettes and complementary accessories such as collars and leashes to help ensure your pooch puts her best foot forward. The limitededition line of dapper, sweet and sophisticated wedding attire, including elegant tuxedos to bow-adorned dresses, is available at www.petsmart.com and PetSmart stores. Remember, a “dress rehearsal” can help you make sure your fur kids can sit and stay comfortably in their wedding day attire. Pamper your pet. Now is not the time to skimp on pampering. From lush, oxygen-infused baths to haircuts fit for a show dog, nail trims to non-toxic chalking and decorative stenciling, let a groomer take the lead on your pet’s look for the big day. Keep everyone fed. Make sure your four-legged friends

have more than table scraps to nosh on during the reception. Serve food in a portable bowl and bring treats, too. Provide plenty of fresh water, and if the venue is outdoors, use a large block of ice to keep your canine’s water cool all day. (Family Features) Make sure your fur kid is the party type. Before committing your pet to a vibrant celebration, be sure he’s comfortable with commotion, loud music, crowds and strangers. Consider signing up for a training class beforehand; brushing up on your pet’s best behavior can only enhance the day. Assign a chaperone. If you have a leading role in the big day as the bride or a member of the wedding party, recruit a staff or family member to double as your pet’s dedicated chaperone. “The Talk” (with Loved ones who have signs of Dementia)

By Janice Gough Remember when you had difficulty when your parent decided to talk to you about the Birds and Bees. They gave you

what we referred to as “the talk”. But as we grow older the table is turned. Now, we must consider how to approach ”the talk” with our loved one about another important situation… signs of dementia. If one waits until older loved ones show signs of diminished capacity, discussions with them may be difficult or impossible.”It’s not an easy thing to say to someone…”I think you’re having trouble remembering”. It can also be difficult for one to know what to say because of a lack of knowledge about the severity or duration of a condition. Parents can get angry, defensive or depressed at the suggestion that they are having cognitive difficulties, even if you raise the issue with sensitivity and forethought. But this doesn’t mean that you should ignore signs of problems. Several factors, including

stress, changes in medications, lack of sleep, and an inadequate diet, can affect a one’s ability to understand or remember. They may seem confused or have memory lapses due to these temporary behavior or other health issues. It may also make it more difficult to gauge cognitive abilities. An older client, whose pain medication recently made her sound so unclear in the way she spoke, especially on the phone, caused her to be very concerned that others might misjudge her. Because she sounded confused, they probably thought she was a little flaky or difficult, but there was no problem with her intelligence or comprehension. Sometimes loved-ones themselves notice they’re slipping. They don’t say they’re suffering from dementia, but they may say, yeah,” I have a concern”.

PROPER PREPARATION The good news is that the most useful preparation for dealing with a loved one’s diminished capacity is also generally the easiest, because it should take place well in advance of signs of any problem. It is important to bring up their wishes for the future in detail, when they’re healthy and can discuss it without anger. It helps to observe their behavior over time, taking note of any indications of long-term decline. The family should apprise themselves of who their financial advisors, CPA, their Doctors and their lawyers are in event of a downturn in their health. Power of attorney designations should be reviewed and kept updated. Proper preparation will give you tools for caring for loved ones even if they develop problems making decisions or expressing them. Advance thought and

discussion can help to lay the groundwork for a trusted relative or friend to assist as a proxy. If your loved one, with the aid of the advisor, designates who will aid in their care, both financially and medically, the chances are greater that the proxy who is chosen will be someone who will safeguard their best interests. Preparations are likely to make conversations about a client’s cognitive decline less difficult, if it occurs. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Of the five governing documents of most associations – articles of incorporation, recorded map or plan, bylaws, operating rules and “CC&Rs the last, covenants, conditions and restrictions, is arguably the most important. Here are eleven things you may not know about your CC&Rs. CC&Rs are: 1) Public documents. When filed with the County Recorder (aka, “recorded”)

CC&Rs become a public document, and anyone can see a copy. 2) A contract binding all owners- regardless of whether they read it, understood it, or received a full copy of it. Once recorded, the CC&Rs document becomes a “covenant running with the land,” meaning a contract binding all owners. 3) Ordinarily not reviewed by buyers until too late. Most buyers regard CC&Rs as boilerplate, to be reviewed eventually. Even though buyers do not sign it, it should be read as carefully as the purchase agreement. 4) Your contract, not just the association’s. CC&Rs place rights and responsibilities not only on the association, but on each member. If a neighbor violates the covenants, you have the same right to deal with the problem. 5) Often distributed in draft or unrecorded format. “Official” CC&Rs will have a recording number from the County Recorder on each page.

Associations often mistakenly distribute unrecorded copies originally received from the developer. It is easy to obtain a copy of the official document. 6) Normally enforced by the courts, even if they seem unreasonable. The California Supreme Court ruled in 1994 that CC&Rs will be presumed enforceable, with some narrow exceptions (such as if they contradict a law). 7) Often not written with your HOA in mind. Original developer-supplied CC&Rs usually seem boilerplate and not tailored to your community. This is because the developer’s primary interest is to obtain approval from the Bureau of Real Estate quickly to begin selling the homes. Many developer attorneys submit preapproved form CC&Rs to the BRE, which speeds processing of the application – but also results in a document which is often sparse and ill-fitting to the unique aspects of the specific community. 8) Although normally amended by vote of all members,

can be amended in three circumstances by the board: To remove discriminatory language (Civil Code 4225(b) or developer access rights for construction or marketing (Section 4230(b), or to update CC&Rs statute number references to the new Civil Code numbers in effect since 2014 (Section 4235). Such amendments must be approved in an open meeting, and need to be recorded. 9) Sometimes called by other names, such as “maintenance agreement” or “declaration of trust” or other such title. What is important is not the title but the fact it is recorded on all of the properties in the association. 10) Sometimes expiring. In past times, developer attorneys would draft CC&Rs with expiration dates. Modern CC&Rs either have no expiration date or automatically renew. Do not let your CC&Rs expire if they still have a set date – renew and then amend that out of the document! 11) The glue holding your community together. CC&Rs can seem intrusive at times, as they place limits on owner autonomy. These limits are necessary to avoid neighbors harming other neighbors and detracting from the community. When your neighbor paints their garage with purple zebra stripes, that is when you appreciate your CC&Rs.

High court throws out conviction for Facebook threats By Sam Hananel Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court on Monday threw out the conviction of a Pennsylvania man prosecuted for making threats on Facebook, but dodged the free-speech issues that had made the case intriguing to First Amendment advocates. Chief Justice John Roberts said it was not enough for prosecutors to show that the comments of Anthony Elonis about killing his ex-wife and harming others would make a reasonable person feel threatened. But the high court sent the case back to the lower court without clarifying exactly what the standard of proof should be. The ruling was a narrow victory for civil liberties groups that had urged the court to make it tougher to convict people who make crude comments on social media that might be viewed as threatening.

Yet the high court declined to lay out broad constitutional protections for such comments. “It is not necessary to consider any First Amendment issues,” Roberts wrote. Elonis, of Freemansburg, in eastern Pennsylvania, was prosecuted under a law that makes it a crime to threaten another person after he posted Facebook rants in the form of rap lyrics about killing his estranged wife, harming law enforcement officials and shooting up a school. One post about his wife said, “There’s one way to love you but a thousand ways to kill you. I’m not going to rest until your body is a mess, soaked in blood and dying from all the little cuts.” Elonis claimed the government had no right to prosecute him if he didn’t actually intend his comments to be threatening to others. He argued that his musings were protected by the First Amendment.

But the government said it didn’t matter what Elonis intended. It argued that if the comments provoked enough fear and anxiety to make a reasonable person feel threatened, that was enough to prosecute it as a crime. Seven justices on the high court agreed that it was not necessary to reach First Amendment issues in reversing Elonis’ conviction. Roberts said the reasonable-person standard is “inconsistent with the conventional requirement for criminal conduct - awareness of some wrongdoing.” Justice Samuel Alito agreed with the outcome, but said he would have made clear that a person can violate the law if he disregards the risk that comments will be interpreted as a threat. Justice Clarence Thomas dissented, saying he would have found Elonis’ posts to be “true threats” under the objective standard accepted by the vast majority of appeals courts prior to Monday’s ruling. Facebook was not a party in the case. Elonis had claimed his posts under the pseudonym “Tone

Dougie” were a form of therapy that allowed him to cope with the breakup of his marriage and being fired from his job at an amusement park. His lawyers said the comments were heavily influenced by rap star Eminem, who has also fantasized in songs about killing his ex-wife. Elonis’ wife testified that the comments made her fear for her life and she persuaded a judge to issue a protective order. After his wife obtained a protective order, Elonis wrote on Facebook: “Is it thick enough to stop a bullet?” Those and other comments led to his arrest. A jury found Elonis guilty under a law barring interstate communications that contain “any threat to injure the person of another.” He was sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison and was released last year. Elonis was arrested again in April for allegedly throwing a pot that hit his girlfriend’s mother in the head. Police charged him with simple assault and harassment. Steven Shapiro, national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the

decision “recognizes that the law has for centuries required the government to prove criminal intent before putting someone in jail.” “While today’s decision insists on fairness, it is not a license to threaten, which remains illegal when properly proved,” Shapiro said. While the ruling was seen as a minor victory for First Amendment advocates, University of Maryland law professor James Grimmelmann said it was also “not much of a loss for people concerned about harassment and domestic violence.” Elonis’ attorney, John Elwood, said he is confident Elonis will be vindicated when lower courts reconsider his case, possibly at a new trial. “We’re pleased that the Supreme Court saw the case for what it was: A criminal conviction for a “crime” of speech based on only a showing of negligence,” Elwood said. The Justice Department says 63 people were indicted on federal charges of making illegal threats in the 2013 fiscal year, up from 53 cases the previous year. Source KMIR

Families Nationwide Pushing for Affordable Broadband

By Desert Star Staff There’s no doubt about it, affordable broadband is no longer a frill; it is essential for most Americans. Unfortunately, there are many parts of the country where it is particularly challenging for carriers to offer high-quality services while keeping costs affordable for the average family. “ I n o u r i n c re a s i n g l y interconnected society, most people who live in urban areas can choose from a variety of communication services,” says Shirley Bloomfield, chief

executive officer of NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association, which represents nearly 900 independent, community-based telecommunications companies in rural and small-town America. “However, many rural consumers -- who deserve the same opportunity -- are being denied the freedom to choose their communications options in the same way.” The Issue: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC)’s Connect America Fund, which focuses on expanding

broadband, already supports larger carriers. However, the current support that small telecommunications providers receive is linked to a consumer’s purchase of traditional telephone service. As a result, many residents of rural areas are forced to pay for services they may no longer want, such as traditional landline telephones, to get the high-speed broadband services they need. “While consumers should certainly have the right to buy traditional telephone services

if they want, they shouldn’t be forced to buy them,” says Bloomfield, who says the answer lies in updating universal service policies to meet the needs of a broadband-oriented world, along with finding solutions that promote affordable rates for consumers, no matter where they live. With that in mind, NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association is working with the FCC and legislators to give the rules a makeover. “Rural telecommunications providers need a support mechanism in place to ensure

that consumers in their coverage areas are able to afford and receive telecommunications services of their own choosing,” says Bloomfield. “An outdated set of rules will represent an obstacle to a broadband future.” Take Action: Consumers can learn more about these issues at www.NTCA.org/broadbandfacts. To take action, they may also consider getting in touch with their congressional representatives to learn more about their positions on the issue. (StatePoint)

Celebrate Dad with Grilling and Golf PORK AND WATERMELON KABOBS

Servings: 8 Ingredients 6 tablespoons brown sugar 6 tablespoons soy sauce 6 tablespoons diced red onion 3 garlic cloves, minced 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme Pepper to taste 1 pound boned, lean pork chop, cut into 1-inch cubes (approximately 38-40 pieces) 32 cubes watermelon (1 inch each), plus extra for garnish if desired 16-24 zucchini rounds (1/2 inch) 16 pineapple chunks, fresh or canned (1 inch each) 24 yellow or orange peppers chunks (1 inch each, approximately 3-4 peppers total) Cooking spray Sesame seeds for garnish By Desert Star Staff This year for Father’s Day, skip the tacky tie and give dad something he truly wants – quality time with the kids who gave him such an honorable title. Plan an intimate family gathering with all his favorite foods and a few special touches that reflect his other passions in life, such as golf. Let dad savor some grilled goodness (and a healthy dose of antioxidants) with colorful fruit and veggie kabobs. Healthy, hydrating watermelon is the star ingredient of these colorful skewers, which also include marinated chunks of pork. Add a low-calorie, fat-free side by serving watermelon balls in a fun golf ball-shaped vessel carved from a watermelon rind. For more recipes and carving ideas using versatile watermelon, visit www.watermelon.org. (Family Features)

Combine sugar, soy sauce, onion, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, thyme and pepper in mixing bowl. Pour into resealable bag and add pork pieces. Seal bag, mix thoroughly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, turning bag periodically. Remove pork from bag and reserve marinade. Thread 5 pork pieces, 4 watermelon cubes, 2-3 zucchini rounds, 2 pineapple chunks and 3 peppers on each of 8 skewers, alternating the order. Spray cooking surface on heated grill and place kebobs on grill. Grill for 12-15 minutes, or until done, turning and basting frequently with reserved marinade. Garnish with sesame seeds and chunks of watermelon.

GOLF BALL SERVING BOWL

Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on side and cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch from stem end, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind. This will provide sturdy base. Using paring knife, cut a 3- to 4-inch round circle in top of watermelon. Use melon baller to make shallow round divots into rind of watermelon to mimic dimples in golf ball. Next, use kitchen knife to peel thin layers of rind off to expose white underneath, being careful not to cut too deep or red flesh will be exposed. Try to get as much of green rind off so it will resemble a white golf ball. Hollow out watermelon with spoon or scoop. Place on tray and add watermelon balls to serve.

T R AV E L Deaf West Theatre’s Production of “Spring Awakening” BY BEVERLY COHN

The lobby of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts was filled with excitement as hearing-impaired friends greeted each other with hugs and kisses, signing their enthusiasm that almost translated itself for those of us who are not hearing impaired. This enthusiasm was only the beginning of what was an astounding evening of a rare, emotionally charged theatrical experience. Before the imaginary curtain went up, the cast milled about a dimly lit stage, stretching and do a variety of warm-up exercises. In the house, an usher held up a sign with a line through a cell phone signaling the direction to put away all electronic devices. Soon, with the musicians in place high above the stage, this unique production of “Spring Awakening” came to life. A Tony Award-winning rock musical, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, the play was originally performed on Broadway on December 10, 2006 and closed on January 18, 2009 after racking up 859 performances. The story is based on the 1891 German play by Frank Wedekind, who described his play as “a tragedy of childhood.” It was an

indictment of parents, teachers, and the clergy who emotionally paralyzed children by keeping them in the darkness as they discovered their sexuality and the confusion that set in as their bodies became alive with new feelings. The current production is masterfully directed by Michael Arden, who has elicited deep, compelling, sometimes wrenching performances from each of his actors. He also has made full use of every inch of the Wallis, including the orchestra pit, which symbolized a burial. The action takes place in a provincial German town in the late 1800s and revolves around a group of adolescent school children who are trying to find answers to their questions precipitated by their emerging hormones. This is an innocent time for these children – an innocence that is challenged by the mystical, magical feelings being awakened in their teenage bodies. They ignore the adults in their lives and try to find answers amongst their peers. Obviously, what is different about this production is that the cast is comprised of an incredibly talented ensemble of hearing and non-hearing actors who create their characters so thoroughly, that it almost takes your breath away. The principal non-hearing actors have a “twin” hearing actor. As one actor signs, the other actor speaks the lines or sings the ballad. They both have the same emotional content, whether signed or spoken, and act as one integrated person. The actors use the American Sign Language, which, in and of itself, becomes a highly theatrical, balletic component in its beauty, grace, and deep, soulful emotions as expressed by

Daniel N. Durant, Andy Mientus, Miles Barbee, Alex Wyse and Alex Boniello in “Spring Awakening”

the actors’ bodies. Wendla, beautifully played by Sandra Mae Frank, speaks and sings through her “twin,” a most talented Katie Boeck, who also plays the guitar. Wendla is an innocent and has no idea how babies are made and sings the lovely ballad “Mama Who Bore Me.” She insists she’s too old to believe in the stork and begs her mother for the truth, which her mother comically avoids by omitting some major details about the male/female babymaking procedure. The lack of this basic knowledge causes great pain later on with devastating consequences for both Wendla and Melchior, played intensely by Austin McKenzie. Their confusion and mutual “forbidden” attraction is illuminated in a striking duet, “The Word of Your Body,” sung by Melchior and Wendla (Katie Boeck.) The tender love scene between them is graphically, but

tastefully, acted out. A minister is giving a sermon as we watch these two young people grapple with their initial reluctance to surrender to their desires. Another outstanding performance was given by Daniel N. Durant as Moritz, with his songs sung by his “twin,” a very talented Alex Boniello, who also played the guitar. Moritz’s failure at school meets with strong parental disapproval resulting in an unexpected outcome. Other teen-age topics, which were explored, included; wet dreams, child abuse, incest, homosexuality, rape, suicide, and teenage pregnancy. A particularly amusing scene was the masturbation sequence, which was staged in a fun, stylized manner. Some of these subjects are as relevant today as they were in the 1800s. The balance of this highlytrained, versatile ensemble is comprised of Sean Barna (drums) (could lighten up a bit,) Joshua Castille (Ernst,) Kathryn Gallagher (voice of Martha/guitar,) Sean Grandillo (voice of Otto/bass,) Amelia Hensley (Thea,) Lauren M. Luiz (Heidi, voice of Thea,) Andy Mientus (Hanschen,) Daniel David Stewart (voice of Ernst/piano,) Ali Stroker (Anna,) Alexandra Winter (harp,) and Alex Wyse (Georg.) Also outstanding were Hillary Baack, Daniel Marmion, and Natacha Roi who were quite convincing in creating distinctly different adult characters. In a profusion of color, sounds, and dramatic lighting effects, the story is told through a strong narrative and haunting songs. While every number is outstanding, some of them include; “The Bitch of Living,” (Moritz and voice of Moritz,) “Touch Me,” (Company,) the rousing “Totally Fucked,” (sung by Melchior and Company,) “The Mirror-Blue Night, (Melchior and the boys,)” “I Believe,” (Company,) “And Then There Were None,”(Moritz

and voice of Moritz and the boys,)“Whispering” (Wendla, and Katie Boeck,) and the closing number “The Song of Purple Summer,” (Company.) Vocal arrangements are by Annmarie Milazzo, and the band consists of Christian Hebel (violin,) Diana Wade (viola,) and Tim Loo (cello.) This outstanding production, wonderfully choreographed by Spencer Liff, is framed by Dane Laffrey’s excellent, highly functional set design with movable set pieces that help drive the action forward. He also designed the period costumes. Ben Stanton’s light design drenches the stage with glorious rich colors, using a variety of lighting devices, bridging the past with the present. Finally, there’s Lucy Mackinnon’s imaginative projection design. She created beautiful backdrops of sparkling stars, snow, and assortment of patterns reflecting the current dramatic moment. One last observation: Obviously, the hearing-impaired actors cannot hear the applause. So, how the audience showed its standing ovation approval was by raising their arms high into the air and twirling their fingers. You owe it to yourself to see this rare production, as evenings of theatre like this don’t come around that often. You will probably leave the theatre smiling, but with a little lump in your throat. FILM PBS DVDs for Dad’s Special Day BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Sunday June 21st is just around the corner, a day to honor Dad in a unique way. One gift idea that will keep on giving throughout the year is a Blu-ray or DVD on a subject he is especially interested in. Here are a few suggestions from the PBS catalogue of fine programs. If dad is a history buff, there is the excellent Ken Burns film “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History.” Another history title is “The Sixties: The Decade That Changed the World” from executive producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman or the 2015 Academy Award nominee for the best documentary feature “Last Days in Vietnam.” You can also go further back in time to the court of Henry VIII and learn about the history of his reign, which was filled with danger, treason and intrigue. There are two titles on that subject: “Wolf. Hall” and “Inside the Court of Henry VIII.” If your dad enjoys a good mystery, check out

For the first time, their individual stories have been interwoven into a single narrative. It begins with Theodore’s birth in 1858 and ends with Eleanor’s death in 1962. The seven-part, fourteenhour film spans more than a century. Theodore becomes the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece Eleanor marries his fifth cousin, Franklin, who goes on to become our 32nd president. The series details the history the Roosevelts helped to shape from the creation of National Parks and the digging of the Panama Canal to the passage of innovative New Deal programs, the defeat of Hitler and the postwar struggle for civil rights at home and human rights abroad. The narrator is Peter Coyote, with Paul Giamatti as Theodore Roosevelt, Edward Herrmann as FDR and Meryl Streep giving voice to Eleanor.

Inside the Court of Henry VII Oscar’s nominee “Last Days hands to wage a desperate his desire to do what is right and in Vietnam” documents the final effort to evacuate as many South his instinct to survive. The DVD days of the Vietnam War as the Vietnamese as possible. has an additional 25 minutes of bonus video.

“Grantchester,” set in 1950’s England. The six-part series deals with faith, love and murder. And last, but by no means least, there’s “Animal Homes,” a 3-part series on how animals build a home for their families. In “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History,” Ken Burns chronicles the lives of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics.

“The Sixties” was a decade of great change in America, and the PBS documentary of the same name chronicles the events of that tumultuous ten-year period that reshaped America. During that time, television comes of age, space is conquered; President Kennedy is assassinated, war rages in Vietnam and the Beatles and their music come to America.

MUSIC Past, present riches celebrated on new collections BY ROBERT KINSLER

Great music never goes out of style or sounds dated. Look (and listen) no further than a fantastic box set featuring Little Richard’s ‘50s and early ‘60s recordings, a deluxe reissue focusing on classic heavy metal outfit Thor, as well as a Rhett Miller’s first-ever collaboration with Black Prairie and a great new celebration of the 2002 classic science fiction western TV series “Firefly” courtesy of The Fallen Stars.

Artist: Little Richard Title: Directly From My Heart: The Best of the Specialty & Vee-Jay Years (Specialty Records) You might like if you enjoy: Little Richard, Fats Domino, and early Beatles Tell me more: Listening to the wide-ranging three-disc set “Directly From My Heart: The Best of the Specialty & VeeJay Years” is to be transported to rock ‘n’ roll’s infancy. Little Richard is heard on 64 tracks spanning 1956 to 1965, singing

poignant ballads such as the bluesy “Wonderin’ and R&B standout “Maybe I’m Right,” as well as songs mining Mississippi blues (“Goin’ Home Tomorrow”) and the Memphis sound (“I Don’t Know What You’ve Got But it’s Got Me”). Along the way Richard is featured tackling soul – notably I’m Just a Lonely Guy (All Alone)” and “You Better Stop.” But the parade of hits featured across the seminal three-disc collection is the box set’s ace play, with timeless rockers such as “Tutti Frutti,” “Kansas City,” Ready Teddy,” “Rip It Up” “Long Tall Sally” and “Lucille” resonating with the force of the ages. Artist: The Fallen Stars Title: Leaves On the Wind, Vol. 2: No Power in the ‘Verse Can Stop Me (Kiss My Squirrel Music) You might like if you enjoy: Dawes, The Lone Bellow, the classic sicfi series “Firefly”

Tell me more: Although the science fiction drama “Firefly” only saw the production of 14 episodes in 2002 (and a subsequent theatrical film “Serenity” in 2005), the groundbreaking series has spawned an enduring following of fans known as “Browncoats.” The Fallen Stars, a Huntington Beach-based Americana band featuring husband-and-wife Bobbo Byrnes (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Tracy Byrnes (vocals, bass) has been busy setting the series’ Old Westmeets-cosmos mythology to music. The band has followed up 2013’s “Leaves On the Wind, Vol. 1: Still Flying” with the newlyreleased “Vol. 2: No Power in the ‘Verse Can Stop Me.” Each song is based on an episode of “Firefly,” with episodes 6-10 celebrated on the new EP. It’s not surprising that every track is a gemstone, with the tender mandolin-anchored “Goodnight Kiss,” rollicking “Miracle” and wistful “Open the Door” among the tracks blending top-tier

musical song craft and lyrical ties to Joss Whedon’s enduring tour de force. Information: TheFallenStars.com.

Artist: Thor Title: Unchained (Cleopatra Records) You might like if you enjoy: Thor, Kiss, Judas Priest Tell me more: Fans of early Kiss and classic Judas Priest will want to get a listen to the deluxe reissue of Thor’s “Unchained.” The two-disc collection features the Vancouver, Canada-spawned metal band’s original 1983 EP “Unchained” and 12 bonus tracks on the audio CD, while the second disc is a DVD is filled with two hours worth of performance and concept videos from 19821985. Riff rock resonates on the straight-up “Anger” and “Rock the City,” while the rapid-fire “When Gods Collide” recalls vintage Black Sabbath. Information: CleopatraRecords. com. Artist: Rhett Miller

with Black Prairie Title: The Traveler (ATO Records) You might like if you enjoy: Old 97’s, The Lone Bellow Tell me more: Rhett Miller has never been afraid to take chances and it continues to pay dividends. On “The Traveler,” a new collection where the Old 97’s frontman joins forces with Portland-based alternative Americana outfit Black Prairie, Miller’s honest and lyrical style of songcraft wields a dozen songs steeped in lyrical and musical riches. The lovely “Jules,” sweeping “My Little Disaster” and acoustic “Fair Enough” (where fiddler Annalisa Tornfelt’s vocals blend beautifully with Miller’s baritone) are early standouts. The indie rocker “Escape Velocity” (with Guster’s Ryan Miller adding satisfying backing vocals), stunning “Dreams Vs. Waking Life” and piano-anchored “Good Night” are among the potent tracks on the latter half of “The Traveler.” Information: RhettMiller.com.

Recycling Fraud Arrest: Second Trucker Busted at Border

$15,356 out-of-state haul stopped at agricultural checkpoint in Blythe, California

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – For the second time in as many months, the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) is announcing the arrest of a semi-truck driver on recycling fraud charges. Similar to the prior incident, this case involves importing out-of-state empty beverage containers for the purpose of defrauding the California Redemption Value (CRV) fund. “When criminals try to cash in on out-of-state empty beverage containers, they essentially try to steal from every

Californian who pays the CRV fee at the cash register,” CalRecycle Director Caroll Mortensen said. “We’ll continue to do everything it takes to stop fraud and prevent criminals from making elicit gains from our beverage container recycling program.” CalRecycle works closely with its enforcement partners at the California Department of Justice and the Department of Food and Agriculture to enforce CRV fraud-prevention efforts. On May 12, members of DOJ’s Recycling Fraud Team were conducting surveillance at a recycling center in Phoenix,

Ariz., when they observed a “B&S Transport” semi-truck out of Baldwin Park, Calif., being loaded with bags of empty beverage containers. The semi left the Phoenix recycling center in the afternoon and arrived at the Blythe border agricultural checkpoint in Riverside County that evening. There, according to the arrest report, the driver told the checkpoint inspector that his truck was empty. However, upon inspection, the trailer was found to contain the used beverage containers that were observed being loaded in Phoenix – a total of 8,548 pounds of aluminum

and 1,522 pounds of plastic with a potential value of more than $15,000 in illegal CRV refunds. After being interviewed by RFT agents, driver Ricardo Rodriguez of Colton, in San Bernardino County, was arrested on recycling fraud and attempted grand theft charges. His arraignment is set for July 14 at the Riverside County Courthouse in Indio. Califor nia’s Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act incentivizes recycling through a CRV fee paid by California consumers at the time of purchase and

refunded upon return of the empty containers. Since out-ofstate consumers do not pay the fee, out-of-state containers are not eligible for CRV redemption. CalRecycle aggressively combats fraud through enhanced training of recycling center owners, increased scrutiny of payment claims, daily load limits, and increased enforcement and inspection efforts with cooperation from California’s DOJ and CDFA’s agricultural checkpoints.

F FAMILY FEATURES

or many families, some of the most anticipated summertime activities happen around the pool. But before you dive into the fun, be sure you and your family know the many ways to practice pool safety.

Sun safety

Sunburns can cause a lot more than just an embarrassing red appearance on the skin; they can be the source of severe pain, fever and even dehydration. In fact, just one sunburn during childhood can increase the risk of developing skin cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, multiple events of extreme sunburn for individuals age 18 and younger can contribute to the development of melanoma. The sun’s harsh rays can also affect your appearance later in life, causing premature aging and wrinkling of the skin. For babies 6 months of age or younger, keep their sensitive skin out of sunlight completely. For all other ages, here are the do’s and don’ts for playing in the sun:

Do dress your baby in protective clothing n

n

n

Always cover baby’s arms and legs in airy, light-colored garments. Dark colors absorb heat, while lighter hues reflect it, keeping baby cooler. Look for shirts and swimwear made from sun-protective fabrics. These garments are especially great if your kids spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer. Choose a wide-brimmed hat or ball cap and sunglasses to protect your baby’s eyes.

Don’t forget the sunscreen! n n

n

Practice swim safety this summer

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that you avoid applying sunscreen on infants younger than 6 months. Individuals with sensitive skin should seek a hypoallergenic, chemical-free formula with zinc oxide or titanium oxide with an SPF of 15 or higher. If you use a chemical-based sunscreen, always test on a patch of skin first. Apply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and pay attention to the product’s expiration date as the active ingredients can lose their effectiveness over time.

Swimming is a lot of fun, but drowning is a real danger. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that drowning is the second most common cause of accidental deaths among kids. As an advocate for swim safety, Olympic gold medal winner and mom, Janet Evans, offers these tips to keep kids safe this summer: Enroll in swimming lessons. Many people lack basic swimming skills, and enrolling children in swimming lessons at a young age will help reduce the risk of accidents and drowning. Don’t allow children to swim alone. Drowning is silent, and it happens quickly. Always have a responsible adult watching while children are either in or out of the pool. Keep pool areas tidy. Cleaning up pool toys after play can help lessen the temptation of children to enter the pool area unsupervised. For more information on Janet Evans, visit www.janetevans.com.

Water safety

Once your skin is properly protected, it’s almost time to jump in. But before you do, make sure the water is clean and ready.

Do test the water daily n

n

n

Whether your pool uses traditional chlorine or is equipped with a salt chlorine generator, make testing it a top priority, especially when your pool is used frequently. Make sure to read and follow the product label instructions closely when dealing with pool chemicals. Proper dosing of pool chemicals is important for swimmer comfort. Always test the water and make sure the free chlorine level never falls below 1 parts per million (ppm). Chlorine is the main sanitizer of your pool (and drinking water), and the more people in your pool, the more chlorine you may need.

Don’t assume “salt water” pools are better or easier n n n

n

What people call “salt water” pools are still chlorine pools; the salt chlorine generator just makes chlorine on-site. Both traditional chlorine and “salt water” pools contain chlorine. Some people believe pools with salt chlorine generators are maintenance free — but this is untrue, and neglecting things can lead to pool problems. No matter what kind of pool you have, it needs to be tested every day.

Tips for keeping water balanced n n

If your eyes are irritated and the pool water is cloudy or looks green — the balance is probably off. Here’s how to test: ú Use strips that show chlorine, alkalinity, pH and cyanuric acid levels. ú Follow instructions on the package for how to submerge the strip. Compare color readings on the strip to the range on the ú product bottle. ú Ideal water balance ranges: Chlorine: 1–4 ppm Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm pH: 7.2–7.6 Cyanuric Acid: 20–50 ppm

3 facts about “salt water” pools

While there are plenty of options available for pool owners, there are many opinions about pools equipped with salt chlorine generators and traditional chlorine pools. Check out these facts to learn more, and to decide which best fits your family’s needs: n In a “salt water” pool, chlorine is produced by a salt chlorine generator rather than adding chlorine to the pool directly. A “salt water” pool is still being sanitized by chlorine. So, a “salt water” pool is a chlorine pool. n The same amount of chlorine is required to maintain a “salt water” pool as a traditional chlorine pool. n “Salt water” pools require the same maintenance functions and still must be checked and balanced regularly, just like a traditional chlorine pool. Traffic circle project to close intersection By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA.– On Monday, June 15, the intersection of California Drive, Michigan Avenue, and Avenue of the States will be closed as construction begins on a new traffic circle there. The traffic circle, also known as a roundabout, will offer improved pedestrian access and lighting while reducing vehicle speed at the busy intersection. The first change motorists will notice is on Wednesday, June 10, when streetlights at the intersection will go dark as part

of Southern California Edison’s work on the project. Motorists are encouraged to use extra caution when traveling through the area at night between June 10 and the intersection’s closure on June 15. In the interests of safety and to minimize the length of traffic impacts from construction, California Drive, Michigan Avenue and Avenue of the States will be completely closed at the intersection for approximately eight weeks. A partial closure could have compromised safety and doubled the length of the

project to 16 weeks. Work has been scheduled during the summer, when traffic is lightest, to further reduce the inconvenience to neighboring residents and businesses. Detour signs will direct motorists away from the closed intersection to other routes including Hovley Lane East, Fred Waring Drive, Warner Trail, California Drive, and Idaho Street. The work is related to the construction of Carlos Ortega Villas, a new senior community being built on a nearby site.

Designed as a net zero project, one that generates as much energy as it uses, the 72-unit complex is on schedule to be completed in late 2015. The $288,000 cost of the traffic circle is included in the Carlos Ortega Villas project, which is being paid for with funds from the former Palm Desert Redevelopment Agency. It is anticipated that the traffic circle will be completed and the roads reopened in mid-August. For more information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 450.

S P O RT S Aztecs Fall Short of Return to Dodgers Stadium BY DANIEL MARINELLI

Redondo Beach – After losing in the 2014 championship game at Dodger Stadium, the Aztecs had all the motivation they needed to get right back to the Southern California baseball landmark this season. The team lost minimal talent from last year’s squad and brought back multiple players set to play for collegiate teams once they graduate. Yet, with a stacked roster, extrinsic motivation and two, stud pitchers – Andrew Bash and Jeremiah Estrada – Palm Desert could not hold off a top-ranked Redondo Union Sea Hawk team in the 2015 CIF quarterfinals.

In the top of the third inning, the Aztecs struck first blood when a Bash double scored Travis Moniot (University of Oregon) from first base. Up 1-0, with the bases loaded, senior Steven Schuknecht smashed a clutch RBI single. Cody Finley, the runner on second, got thrown out trying to score and the Aztecs walked off the field with the 2-0 lead. In just his sophomore year, Estrada has turned into a stud ace for the Aztecs. In 13 appearances, the UCLA commit went 10-2 and had three complete games. Additionally, the phenom ended the year with

a 0.31 ERA, 76 strikeouts and 68 innings pitched. Despite all his achievements, the stage might have been a bit too big for the young man. Estrada started the game but he did not last until the end. In the bottom frame of the same inning, the Sea Hawks came roaring back in a big way. Redondo Union scored four runs, knocking Estrada out of the game. “It wasn’t like they were hitting him,” Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar said in a post-game intrview. “It was too many bases on balls, and then a key hit. It hurts.” Bash came in to pitch to try

to keep the Aztecs in the game, and with no outs, did a solid job in a tough situation. The senior gave up one walk, however, and the deficit extended to 5-2. After giving up another run in the bottom of the fourth, the Aztecs tried to muster up one last comeback. Palm Desert added another run in the top of the when a Beau Berryhill double scored Johnny Cuevas to bring the DVL champs to within three. The Aztecs had the heart of the order batting in the top of the seventh but went quietly. “One of our strengths all year has been our pitching, and we just couldn’t throw strikes today,”

Coach Salazar said after the game. “It’s hard to come back in the playoffs when you get four runs behind, but they battled all the way, and I’m proud of them for that.” The Aztecs did battle, and they battled all season. They might not have reached the championship, which in the eyes of the Aztecs is a lost season, but it was still successful overall. Palm Desert won league for the seventh consecutive year, lost only on game and won over 25 – it was a great year. For more on sports in the Coachella Valley, follow Dan on Twitter @dsmarine7

By Desert Star Staff While obstacles can get in the way of pursuing your intended goals, if you’re resourceful, they can also present an opportunity to forge a new path. For Lani Hall Alpert, Grammy Award-winning vocalist-turnedauthor, this sentiment hits close to home. At the peak of her success in the mid-’80s, Alpert contracted a debilitating case of Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as the Epstein-Barr virus, forcing the singer to take a reprieve from performing. In spite of losing the physical energy required to sing and perform onstage, Alpert turned to writing to express herself artistically. In Alpert’s new audiobook, “Emotional Memoirs & Short Stories,” she deals with this debilitating period of her life, as well as themes like depression, adultery and self-preservation, in stories both fictional and autobiographical. The book is set to a score that includes music

by her husband, music legend Herb Alpert. Lani Hall Alpert, whose musical career was temporarily put on hold by a health crisis, is certainly an expert on turning hurdles into personal triumphs. She’s now focusing on sharing her story, which she hopes will inspire others to do likewise. Everyone’s stumbling blocks are unique, but here are three positive changes that Alpert made in her own life to improve her situation. • Accept change: Life is about changes. Sometimes they will affect your interpersonal relationships, and sometimes they will affect your health or finances. Defining those changes, speaking about them, and being true to them are the keys to being happy in the face of change. • Find your therapy: If you’re going through a hard time, figure out what will help you to self-actualize. For some it may be to create art, for others it’s

to achieve physical fitness or acquire knowledge. Everyone has his or her own healing mechanism, and if you’re lucky, it will choose you. “When I couldn’t sing, writing helped empty myself of the worry and fear that I was experiencing,” says Alpert. “I have always used creativity to find my own truth.” • Be skeptical: When you are most vulnerable, it can be easy to place your complete trust in a therapist or other person, practice or institution that is meant to be beneficial. But not all such relationships or resources are healthy. Be skeptical until you know you are in good hands. More information about the book, which is available on iTunes and Amazon, can be found at www.lanihallalpert.com. When stumbling blocks get in your path, don’t trip up. These moments can be the perfect occasion to break your own mold. (StatePoint)

Modern twist to classic drama in Old Globe West Coast Premiere

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Just as there are horses for courses, as they say in the racing game, there are actors for roles in the theatre game and Lauren Blumenfeld is the actor for the title role in The Old Globe’s West Coast Premiere of “Rich Girl” hands down. Henry James’ novel Washington Square, which became the stage and screen classic The Heiress, has now been smartly and sharply updated by Victoria Stewart into a modern-day, clever exploration of the mother-daughter, lovehate relationship, set against the backdrop of money – lots of it - dishing up a tasty feast for the actors called “Rich Girl” (and no, we’re not talking Paris Hilton). Solidly directly by James Vasquez, The Old Globe’s Sheila and Harvey White stage features four talented actors playing four interesting characters that draw one into the vortex of a play you thought you knew only to find yourself forgetting all about that dark old drama from the past. Yes, Olivia de Havilland was marvelous in the 1949 movie with a story suited to the culture of its time. But we’re now ensconced, for better or worse, in the 21st century and the events that capture the imagination of today’s audiences often reflect comedy and drama with a dash of the absurd all tossed into the mix in a single production. It’s a way of keeping audiences on their toes; waiting to find out happens at the end. “Rich Girl” features a sensational Lauren Blumenfeld as Claudine, the geeky, gangly, sweet and introverted daughter of mega star TV personality Eve Walker (Meg Gibson). Eve, the doyen of a successful wealth and management foundation has it all, except time for her underachieving daughter Claudine who is withering in the

shadow of her famous mother. Rather than interact with her daughter Eve assigns that chore to her personal assistant Maggie (Carolyn Michelle Smith) a savvy and empathetic friend of Claudine. Maggie acts as a surrogate therapist and business mentor to Claudine who is struggling to become a person of her own while working in the family business. Clever Maggie continues to enjoy the personal relationship she has with both Eve and Claudine, despite Eve’s maddening, at times, bad behavior concerning Claudine. Into this triangle of women in business seeking more out of life comes JD Taylor as Henry, a young, theatrical director in search of funds for a project he has been trying to produce. Red flags immediately spring up around Eve, but not for Claudine who is overwhelmed by all of Henry’s attention to her. Maggie is waiting to see what develops between Claudine and the handsome hunk Henry before she makes up her mind as to what’s really happening. But Eve is already onto the opportunistic pseudo-suitor Henry. Playwright Stewart’s adroit retelling of the James novel concerning the conundrum of whether love and money can ever coexist, especially when it comes to the romantic love choices made by children of wealthy parents, is particularly compelling in “Rich Girl”. Does the phrase “I’m only doing this for your own good”, sound familiar? Bette Davis, as Charlotte Vail heard it from her wealthy mother Gladys Cooper in ‘Now Voyager’. When Joan Crawford as Mildred Pierce utters the phrase, to Anne Blythe there were real dire consequences at stake. Mother love can be a two-edge sword. The talented cast are a delight to watch as each actor gets his or her moment to shine, however, the bulb that burns brightest is

Lauren Blumenfeld as Claudine and JD Taylor as Henry. Photo by Jim Cox turned on by the performance of Lauren Blumenfeld who grows from an introverted twenty something into a confident adult businesswoman. It’s an astonishing transformational arc to watch unfold on a stage. Her focus and in-the-moment performance is riveting in its nuances especially in the chilling denouement at the end. It’s great stuff. Director James Vasquez has staged his production in the round with nice pacing and good traffic management. However, if I

had to be picky about this splendid production it would be to ask the actors not to drop their voices when they’re just two or three words from the end of their speeches. I realize we’re no more than twenty feet from the stage, but we are watching a performance in the round. Someone at some time will have their back to the audience. We don’t want the audience to miss any of those dialogue gems or those emotional moments. In the technical department: Scenic Designer Wilson Chin’s

circular stage area is sleek, spare, and functional. It even allows for Meg Gibson to interact with the audience when she is on her TV program. Amanda Zieve’s lighting design complements the costumes of Shirley Pierson, along with original music and sound design by Lindsay Jones, and the video design of Mark Holmes and Paul Peterson. “Rich Girl” performs on The Old Globe Sheryl and Harvey White Stage and runs through June 21, 2015.
