World Giraffe Day! By RoxAnna Breitigan/ Director of Animal Care June 21st is known for being the start of summer and the summer solstice, which is the longest day. For us, here at The Living Desert, this date

marks the day we celebrate our longest-necked animals that call the zoo home, the giraffe. Today is World Giraffe Day, a worldwide celebration for the tallest animals on the planet. This is when all the

giraffe lovers in the world spread awareness for these long-legged beauties and share the challenges they face in the wild. We hope you will join us in supporting these efforts today.

Two Teenage Girls Die, One Suffers Major Injuries In DUI Crash

By NBC PS City News Service Two teenage girls were killed and another suffered major injuries when a car went off a road north of Indio, hit a tree and overturned at a high rate of speed in a crash blamed on driver intoxication, authorities said Monday. The crash was discovered at 5:15 a.m. Sunday on eastbound Dillon Road west of Berdoo Canyon Road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer S. Zatarain. A 17-year-old girl was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima at 80-90 mph while intoxicated and veered to the right off the road into the open desert area, Zatarain said. The car crashed into a tree, then

overturned in the air, causing the front seat passenger to be ejected and causing the right rear seat passenger to suffer chest trauma before it landed back on its wheels. The two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said. The Riverside County coroner’s office identified Valerie Castellanos and Jade Torres, both 17 and Indio residents. The 17-year-old girl driving the car was taken by paramedics to Desert Regional Medical Center with significant injuries and was subject to arrest, Zatarain said. Source: NBC Palm Springs
