Manchin’s Stance on Voting Bill Called Betrayal to Black Voters

By Nadia Ramlagan/PNS Black West Virginians are voicing disappointment and anger over Sen. Joe Manchin’s - D-W.Va. staunch opposition to the For the People Act, a bill that would overhaul voting procedures nationwide.

The legislation would expand voting access, restore portions of the Voting Rights Act, and boost transparency for political donations. Manchin is the only Senate Democrat who hasn’t co-sponsored the bill.

Cabell County resident Jennifer Wells, the senior organizer with Community Change Action, said Manchin’s decision felt like a slap in the face and said the Black vote pushed Manchin into office in 2018.

“He would not be in office if Black people did not go to the polls,” said Wells. “In his re-election campaign, we showed up.

We weren’t always happy with him or his decisions he makes at the federal level, but we showed up because we understood the threat.”

Earlier this week,

Manchin met with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other civil rights leaders in what appeared to be a futile gathering.

Manchin said while the conversation was, quote, “constructive,” his stance on the bill remains unchanged, arguing there isn’t enough GOP support for the legislation and instead of calling for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Critics, including many top Democrats, say that bill isn’t a replacement for the sweeping reforms outlined in the For the People Act. Clerks from 54 of the state’s counties have signed a letter opposing the For the People Act, but Former West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said amendments were made to address their concerns.

“That’s a little disheartening because it ignores what the people of West Virginia want,” said Tennant. “There’s poll after poll that shows that people in West Virginia - Democrats,

Tennant said allowing any voter to vote by mail in federal elections and other measures included in the For the People Act could be a game-changer for many residents trying to cast their vote in rural

regions where transportation access is challenging.

“This For the People Act is so important because it protects our freedom to vote,” said Tennant. “And it protects it many different ways.”

Manchin continues to get heat from his fellow

West Virginians, including the influential United Mine Workers of America. They on Tuesday re-emphasized its support for the For the People Act. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer D-NY - says he plans to move forward with a vote on the bill.

Despite world events over the past year, the watersports lifestyle is thriving – potentially due to the nature of personal watercraft riding and ability to practice social distancing. In fact, powerboat sales reached record highs, and while that momentum has slowed some in 2021, personal watercraft sales are still surging – up 77% over 2020, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

This growth means there are lots of new riders on the water, and that can affect the safety of riders both experienced and new.

Respecting riding etiquette, wearing protective gear and being conscious of the environment can help ensure riders have fun and continue to enjoy access to watersports. The team at Sea-Doo, a global leader in personal watercrafts, shares this advice to help keep everyone safe while having fun on the water: Know the rules. Rules can vary from one state or location to the next, so be sure you know what the expectations are before you head out on the water. Dress for success. Ensure you have a life jacket or personal flotation device that fits snugly but comfortably. Remember to connect the tether cord from the ignition of your watercraft to your life jacket to cut power to the engine should you end up in the water. Additionally, neoprene shorts can help prevent injuries and give you a comfortable layer between your body and the saddle. Gloves and boots provide protection and improve your grip, and sunglasses can help protect your eyes from the wind and water. It’s also a good idea to keep a windbreaker in a storage compartment in case weather blows in unexpectedly.

Gear up. Once you’re dressed for the occasion, you won’t need much other gear, but there are a few items that can help protect you. Always keep an anchor on board, along with a radio to call for help if you have trouble. A water bottle can help ensure you stay well hydrated on the water, where you typically sweat a lot due to the wind and sun.

Play nice. On gorgeous, sunny days, you can expect your local lake to be busy. Being respectful of others on the water helps ensure everyone can enjoy their water adventures safely. If you haven’t already, take a watercraft or boat safety course and brush up on the basics. Beyond that, pay attention to signs, especially ones that note restricted areas and no-wake zones, and keep a safe 200-foot distance between yourself and other watercrafts.

Be earth aware. Part of being responsible on the water is respecting the environment. You can do your part by committing to green habits like refueling on land and doing maintenance work well away from the shoreline. When you’re riding, getting too close to the shore can tear up your watercraft, but it can also be harmful to the fish and birds that feed on the sediment in the shallows, as well as the vegetation.

Be aware noise and movement of boats may disturb bird populations. Stay clear of posted bird nesting areas. Nesting birds may fly from their nests, exposing unprotected eggs and hatchlings to the sun’s heat or predators. Keeping to channels and deeper water also helps protect the wildlife and prevent shoreline erosion.

Auditions for “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” at Theatre 29

Lewis’ classic, set in the magical land of Narnia, faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion; his struggle with the White Witch; and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting never-tobe-forgotten Narnia.

US regulators approve Alzheimer’s drug targeting cause

By Desert Star Staff The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Biogen’s new

treatment for Alzhei-mer’s disease, making it the first medication to be given the green light to target

the underly-ing causes of the devastating illness.

Called Aduhelm, the FDA approved the drug after

clinical trials showed that the treatment suc-cessfully targets amyloid – the plaque that builds up in the brains of people living with Alzheimer’s – helping to slow the onset of the illness.

Developed by Biogen with Japan’s Eisai Co., the drug is the first treatment that directly targets the cause of the disease, using existing medicine instead of helping ease the symptoms of people afflicted with it.

Discussing the FDA’s approval, Dr. Patrizia Cavazzoni, the director of the organization’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, described it as “a hallmark finding” that is “expected to lead to a reduction in the clinical decline of this devastating form of dementia.”

Despite the fanfare surrounding the approval, Dr. Ronald Petersen, an Alzheimer’s disease ex-pert

at the Mayo Clinic, warned that health officials “can’t overpromise” and need to be clear that “this is not a cure.”

Biogen, alongside Eisai Co., had previously halted the drug development in March 2019 over concerns that the treatment wasn’t working.

However, after reanalyzing the data, the compa-nies reversed their decision, finding that patients in the early stages of the disease benefited from higher doses over a more extended period.

According to Biogen’s estimates, following the FDA’s decision, some 1.5 million Americans will be eligible for the treatment administered via a monthly infusion. However, the continued availability of the drug is contingent on the success of post-approval trials to verify its clinical benefits among users.

America Talks kicks off the fourth annual National Week of Conversation, in which people on all sides of the political spectrum discuss the issues of the day in a respectful manner.

Kristin Hansen, executive director of the Civic Health Project in Palo Alto and a coorganizer of Saturday’s event, said this country needs to lower personal hostilities and break

the government gridlock.

“It can feel difficult if not impossible to bridge the divide, and we can feel really tempted to give up or not even try,” she said.

“However, this puts America on a really precarious path, because we then increasingly fall into the trap of seeing each other as less than fully human.”

She added that the National Week of Conversation is designed to facilitate interactions that are the antithesis of the insults and hatred often found on social media and in the online comment sections for news articles.

The Cowboys’ $1.15 billion 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium is the largest covered stadium in the world. In addition, the team’s 90-acre, $1.5 billion headquarters — called “The Star” — includes a 16-story hotel, private club, hall of fame, stores, restaurants, and event space.

In the last year, we’ve caught more glimpses of what stadiums will be like in the future.

Real Madrid’s plans for its stadium’s $700 million refurbishment feature a casino, fine dining, a museum, and shops.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hope to build what they call the “Stadium of the Future,” which would include developing

the surrounding area with a luxury hotel, parks, and more.

The first planned step is a $441 million football facility next to their stadium designed as a practice space that also offers fan experiences.

The Oakland A’s also proposed a neighborhood development plan as part of a $12 billion stadium proposal.

The team may move to Las Vegas, where a new stadium could cost around $1 billion.

New NFL stadiums typically cost between $750 million and $1.9 billion.

Major League Soccer, meanwhile, has encouraged stadiums explicitly built for soccer. FC Cincinnati opened its $250 million venues in May; St Louis SC’s and Nashville SC’s stadiums are under construction. www.desertstarweekly.com

EA’s ‘Knockout City’ Is the Next Big Game

a lucrative new venture.

“Knockout City,” a teambased dodgeball video game,

appears to be the next big hit for the game publisher.

The title has already amassed 5 million active players since its May 21 release.

McDonald’s French fries come from Bill Gates’ farmland

By Desert Star Staff The potatoes used to produce McDonald’s fries are partially sourced from farms owned by Bill Gates that are so vast they can be seen from space. But that is just one part of the land portfolio of America’s largest farmland owner.

In under a decade, Gates and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, have quietly acquired nearly 109,000 hectares of farmland – roughly the size of Hong Kong – across 18 states in the US, according to data gathered by trade publication The Land Report and NBC News.

The potatoes used by the fast-food giant are grown on an industrial farm spread across some 5,700 hectares in Washington state. The property, named 100 Circles Farm, was purchased by the couple for $171 million

in 2018, per the reports.

More specifically, it was purchased through a host of shell companies linked to their investment group, Cascade Investments, based in Washington.

Participating in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) in March, Gates confirmed as much when he was asked about his farmland purchases, adding that they were not related to his more publicized efforts to promote climate change awareness and sustainable agriculture.

“My investment group chose to do this. It is not connected to climate,” Bill wrote in response before segueing into topics more related to the focus of the AMA – his new how-to guide on avoiding a climate disaster.

“The agriculture sector is important. With more productive seeds, we can

avoid deforestation and help Africa deal with the climate difficulty they already face,” Gates continued.

“It is unclear how cheap biofuels can be, but if they are cheap, it can solve the aviation and truck emissions,” he added—wrapping up the topic and choosing not to participate in the discussion of the ethics of private farm holding by non-farmers that ensued.

Other produce grown on farmland linked to the Gates include soybeans, corn, cotton, onions, carrots and rice.

According to the NBC News report, there are locally registered firms in every state where the two own land with hidden links to Cascade in shared addresses and occasionally even email addresses within the Bill and Melinda

Gates Investment Group.

Cascade, which has been in the news recently after reports emerged about alleged toxic workplace behavior at the firm, declined to comment to NBC News regarding specific landholdings.

However, a spokesperson, Charles V. Zehren, told the publication that the firm has been “very supportive of sustainable farming.” He noted that the farmland owned by the firm had been part of a sustainability program since 2020 that audits the agricultural practices conducted on them.

According to the report, Leading Harvest – a newlyformed non-profit that markets itself online as the “vanguard of advancing sustainable agriculture” – created the sustainability program, which measures variables like soil health,

biodiversity, crop quality and water management.

Among the founding members of Leading Harvest is Cottonwood Ag, one of Cascade’s subsidiaries.

According to some farmers who own lands neighboring the Gates, however, there has been little done by way of reserving the effects of industrial farming on the environment.

Noting that he had hoped Gates would invest in new farming techniques, John S. Quarterman, a farmer in Georgia, told NBC News that “he never did anything that different from before he got here and what other farmers were doing nearby.”

However, Zehren told the publication that Cascade was indeed working to promote ecologically conscious agriculture on its holdings.
