The Stars aligned in Saint Paul, Minnesota for the 15 Annual So the World May Hear Awards Gala.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Starkey Hearing Foundation held its annual So The World May Hear Gala at the River Centre in St. Paul, Minnesota. CEO and Founder Bill Austin and Tani Austin hosted this weekend event. The party begins on Sat. night with a private party and Golf on Sunday morning at the Meadows Golf Course. This is a star-studded event with major

entertainers, celebrities and sports personalities walking the Red Carpet before the evenings dinner and entertainment began.

Locals, Pat and Joe Manhart, are parents to Tani Austin and also go on missions to deliver free hearing aids.

Most of the entertainers and sports figures all spoke about why they were there to support this very worthy cause. They

praise Bill and Tani Austin and the Starkey Foundation for the work; they do worldwide in helping people hear again with free hearing aids. Their missions are mostly in third-world countries where hearing aids are not even heard of or at least not affordable.

Many of the celebrities have gone on these missions and know firsthand the joy of seeing a child or adult hear for the first time.

By KMIR News Staff PALM SPRINGS -- First Lady Michelle Obama pays a visit to the valley on the same day she opened the 2015 Special Olympics.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department tells KMIR they helped give an escort to the First Lady from the Palm Springs International Airport to an undisclosed location in the valley.

They couldn’t tell us what time they gave that escort on

Saturday, but earlier in the day, the First Lady spoke at the opening ceremony of the 2015 Special Olympics in Los Angeles.

It’s also not clear whether Michelle Obama remains in the valley Sunday night.

The sheriff’s department told us there was no road closures, but couldn’t say if she left.

It’s been a little more than a year since the First Lady visited the valley with her husband, President Barack

Obama, back in June 2014.

That trip they headed to a friend’s home in Thunderbird Heights in Rancho Mirage.

We reached out to the White House Media Office, but have not heard back from them.

Once again, the First Family makes a stop in the Coachella Valley.

the Four Seasons group were in attendance. Actors Kevin Sorbo, Julie Ormond, Frankie Muniz, Verne Troyer-Mini Me, and Cheech Marin to name just a few, walked the Red Carpet.

Other celebrities were the numerous sports figures that included, basketball, football, base-ball and boxing. Boxing legends were Levander Holyfield and Roberto Duran. Sports stars were dressed to the nines and brought their wives, friends or even their mothers to this large gala.

Some of the big names in sports included Jim McMann, Paul Molitor, Karl-Anthony Towns, Tyus Jones, Chuck Foreman, Robert Smith and Ron Harper, way too many to list them all. Lou Ferrigno, Incredible Hulk, said he has been hard of hearing since birth and is a big supporter of the Starkey Foundation. The Foundation hopes to raise more than last year, over 8 million dollars. The target this year was over 9 million to continue this wonderful work.

By KMIR News PALM SPRINGS -- Crews are still working on repairing power lines after a car crashed into a power pole in Palm Springs.

At about 2:15am Sunday, a car crashed into a pole at North Indian Canyon and East Vista Chino Drive.

Police officers found the car

on its roof with multiple power lines atop the vehicle.

One of the car’s occupants was able to escape without police assistance, but the other was trapped and could not be rescued until power was shut off.

That person was taken to a hospital.

Alcohol is believed to

be a factor in this crash.

Initially, about 1,700 people lost power.

Southern California Edison tells us it was restored for most customers by 5:00am, but 69 customers are still without power.

Dependent benefits, like spousal or survivor benefits for divorced spouses, are not widely known or understood by most people.

Benefits are available to dependent children until they turn 18, but can continue until they are 20 if they are still attending high school. Dependent children who themselves are disabled and who live at home can continue to receive disability benefits on a parent’s account until age 19, or beyond, if the disability prevents that grown child from working.

The amount a dependent child can receive is 50 per cent of the parent’s benefit amount, or 75 per cent of a deceased parent’s benefit. However, there is a cap on dependent benefits, which varies depending upon whether the parent (on whose account the dependent benefit is drawn) is simply collecting regular benefits or is disabled and has filed under Social Security Disability rules. The amount of dependent benefits available to a family also depends on the size of the benefit the primary beneficiary is receiving.

In general, the maximum available dependent benefit ranges from 50 to 75 per cent of the primary beneficiary’s own benefit amount. If there are two dependent children, or a spouse under 62 is also receiving benefits as a caregiver for a dependent child under 16, and the total exceeds the family benefit limit, the various dependent benefits are equally

The problem is the leaves that constantly fall into my pool and yard. The leaves are not degradable, can easily plug up the filters, and stain the pool. I attended a meeting, pleaded my case, and was told they would remove the tree and replant another type, and I would pay. I objected. It’s not my tree and not on my property. What can I do?

To qualify, the grandparent must have been caring for the child or children as legal guardian for a period of time.

If you are old enough to receive Social Security benefits and have young children it could affect the decision as to when an older parent should start collecting benefits. While delaying filing for benefits does increase the individual’s own benefits in the future, along with potential survivor benefits, waiting may also permanently

forfeit children’s benefits that won’t be available down the road if the child (or children) ages out of eligibility before the retiree hits 70.

According to the government, some 4.4 million children in the U.S. receive about $2.5 billion in Social Security benefits every month as the dependents of parents who are retired, disabled or deceased.

The important point to remember is that the total benefits received are capped.

In the case of a deceased parent who was eligible to receive Social Security, there is also a family cap on total survivor benefits of 150-180 per cent of the deceased spouse’s benefit amount. This could mean 75 per cent to a child or to each of two children, or 75 per cent to a child and 75 per cent to a younger surviving parent caring for that child but not eligible to receive his or her own Social Security or survivor benefit yet.

If there is a second eligible child too, then the total benefits are divided equally with each of three recipients getting 50 per cent of the deceased’s benefit amount.

Dear G.I. and P.F.: Trees are a wonderful amenity, but the responsibility for trees is often misunderstood.

Ownership of a tree is established by the location of its trunk. Under Civil Code Section 833, enacted in 1872, the owner of the tree is determined by the property upon which its trunk rests. So, if the tree trunk is within common area, it is association responsibility, and if the trunk rests within the separate interest of the lot owner, the tree is owned by the member.

In similarly ancient legal precedent, California courts have ruled since 1886 that the tree’s owner is responsible for the damage caused by the tree, even damage off the tree owner’s property. Whether tree roots or falling branches, the owner of the tree is most likely to be held responsible for damage July 29, 2015

caused by the tree. This legal responsibility does not depend upon negligence.

If tree roots or branches intrude across a property line, the neighboring owner may cut the roots or branches, so long as the tree is not harmed. This means a consultation with an arborist is essential before getting out the chainsaw.

Thanks, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: Some years ago, several trees had died and we asked the Board for permission to replant trees from the approved list. We received approval in writing, and re-planted.

The board now has members who are tree haters. They have called us in for hearings, and we have shown them our approvals.

The association sent a final letter asking for trees/bushes to be kept at 10 feet, which is not part of the architectural guidelines, and CC&Rs, and it says we are non-compliance without specificity. Please let me know.

provide for view protection, unless there is a specific city ordinance or governing document providing for it. Some associations have limits on tree height, to protect community views. However, rules, including architectural or landscaping standards, must be written, under Civil Code 4350(a). If the association desires a height limit, it should pass a rule using the 30 day notice process required by Civil Code Section 4360, or better still, ask members to approve a CC&R amendment. Some associations have unwritten “house rules,” but those are traditions, not enforceable rules.

Lastly, disciplinary hearing notices should specify what rule or CC&R section is being violated.

IDF calling thousands for emergency-readiness war drills

By Desert Star Weekly Large-scale military drills have been launched in Israel with the aim of testing the IDF’s readiness to go into emergency mode. Hundreds of thousands of reserve soldiers are involved in testing the system.

They will all be receiving a telephone call to confirm everything is in working order, according to the General Staff’s plan for the drills, set to last for three days.

Thousands of others will be summoned to bases on short notice, according to the Jerusalem Post. An IDF source told the newspaper that this is “one of the largest telephone

call-ups we’ve had in an exercise.� “We want to ensure that the system is well-oiled and working.�

The Air Force, with its bases, and other facilities will also take part in the call-up. Among other activities, base personnel will be carrying out emergency intelligence data analysis for the purpose of conducting airstrikes.

The same goes for the Israeli Navy and their infrastructure. “For the first time, cyber defenses will be a part of a General Staff exercise,� the source also said.

Responses to potential attacks from Syria, Lebanon and

Gaza are the overarching theme of the drills, the IDF says. “It is part of our activities linked to working on our readiness,� the source added, saying the Southern Command will practice responding to mock rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.

Other units taking part in the war games include: the Operations Branch, which will practice coordinating emergency maneuvers; the Home Front Command, which will hold rescue drills, and others.

The IDF warns the MondayWednesday period will be marked by increased military activity, which will take in public

places such as schools. Several cities around the country will be affected, including Tel Aviv and the central locations there.

IDF war drills have been coming under fire – not just from Palestinians, but from Israelis as well. According to Haaretz, frequent activity in regions such as Lachish has led to widespread fires, causing serious ecological damage. This is exacerbated, according to the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, by the fact that the army doesn’t take care to fight the fires, nor does it have any firefighting equipment.

The number of fires has been especially high this year in the south-east. Satellite

photography was used to assess the damage. The nature authority says around 60 brush and forest fires since April have all been the result of IDF training exercises. Animals and plant life suffer immensely, the body adds.

The Israeli Environmental Protection Ministry has accused the Israel Defense Forces of being the country’s top polluter, and one who doesn’t care to be told of the damage it causes. “The IDF today is the biggest environmental wrongdoer in Israel,� the ministry’s deputy director-general said, as cited by the Jerusalem Post.

By Desert Star Staff The Obama administration wants to step up transfers of 52 Guantanamo prisoners to foreign countries and bring in the rest to prisons on US soil, allowing the notorious militaryrun legal black hole to be closed, a presidential aide said. “Why hand over this albatross to the president’s successor?� Lisa Monaco, a leading national security aide for President Barack Obama told the Aspen Security Conference Saturday.

The White House renewed the effort to shut down the prison

on Cuban soil, where captives in the US War on Terror had been kept since President George W. Bush launched it after the 9/11 attacks.

Obama pledged to see the site closed on his first day in office, but so far failed to overcome congressional resistance. Nevertheless, the number of inmates in Guantanamo during his tenure reduced from 242 to the current 116.

Now operating the prison has become excessively costly per capita, Monaco said. “Today, right now,� she said,

the government is spending “$3 million per detainee, per year, to house them in Guantanamo. We can be spending that money on a host of national security threats that we’ve been talking about all week.�

The argument seemed to resonate with Senator John McCain, the chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, to whom the Obama administration is to present the new plan shortly. Speaking after Monaco, the hawkish lawmaker called Guantanamo “a blot on the honor of the United States of America.� McCain said he

wanted “to appeal to my fiscal conservative friends that you have to save taxpayers a couple of� million dollars a year.

The White House wants to expedite the transfer of 52 Gitmo detainees to foreign countries for resettlement. It wants to keep the 64 inmates deemed too dangerous to be released to ‘supermax’ prisons in the US, a move that is currently prohibited by legislation. “We are going to whittle down this group to what I refer to as the irreducible minimum, who would have to be brought

here to a secure location, held under the laws of war, continuing under military detention,�

Monaco said. “That’s the only way we’re going to be able to close Guantanamo.�

Some of the captives have spent more than a dozen years in Guantanamo prison without any trial or even charges brought against them. Human rights activists call the situation deplorable, saying that the prisoners were denied their right for fair trial and subjected to mistreatment by US officials.

Gas Prices Slowly Dropping Across Valley

By Angela Monroe CATHEDRAL CITY -- Gas prices are dropping across the area, but probably not as quickly as drivers would like to see after they skyrocketed a couple weeks ago.

Prices jumped 72 cents for drivers here in Riverside County in just nine days, and now have only decreased by six cents in the past week.

The Automobile Club of Southern California tells us the wholesale price has dropped, so there’s plenty of room for prices to drop here at the pump.

Right now according to AAA, the average price in Riverside, San Bernardino counties is $4.13 a gallon.

Compare that to last month’s price at just $3.52 a gallon.

We’re still paying more than last year, when the average was $4.01.

Wholesale prices dropped 80 cents in two weeks, so why

aren’t retail prices dropping dramatically for drivers?

The Automobile Club of Southern California tells us retailers say they lose a lot of money when the wholesale prices spike suddenly.

That’s why they say it is so important to shop around -- something drivers often stop doing when prices drop -because getting gas at cheaper spots encourages competitors to drop their prices.

We found drivers looking for deals at an Arco station in Cathedral City.

“That’s actually why I’m getting gas here because it’s actually 45 cents higher in Highland, and my business is out here in Palm Desert, so I always stop here to get gas because it’s always 30 to 40 cents cheaper,” said Highland resident, Ken Ambroise.

“It destroys my budget, this is a tourist town and I work off

commission, so I don’t have any money especially to be spending on $5 a gallon gas,” said Megan Brunning of Desert Hot Springs.

“I go back to when I was a kid for .25 cents a gallon, so nothing changes does it, it just keeps going up,” said Palm

Springs resident, Bob Young.

It should keep going down because experts say now that foreign imports resumed from overseas, that’s helping supply conditions in Southern California.

The Exxon refinery in Torrance is still down; they

believe it will be fixed by beginning of 2016.

California Group Asks President Obama to “Ban the Box”

By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO – Advocates for prisoners incarcerated in California are asking President Barack Obama to take action to ban the question about criminal convictions on applications for federal jobs, and positions with federal contractors.

Their calls come after the president’s recent comment that the country should “ban the box” on all job applications.

Doing so would delay a criminal background check until the applicant has had a chance to prove his or her qualifications.

Plane crashes into yard

By Desert Star Staff The pilot of a small singleengine plane has died after crashing the aircraft into the yard of a house in Riverside, southern California. The pilot reportedly attempted an emergency landing at the Riverside Municipal Airport after the engine malfunctioned midair.

No one was injured on the ground, according to reports, but the pilot of the Beechcraft BE35 aircraft was pronounced dead at the scene, ABC7 reports.

The pilot was the only person on board.

Just minutes before the crash, the pilot radioed the tower about losing engine power, Fire Capt. Tim Odebralski told KABCTV. However, the pilot apparently could not make it far enough to make an emergency landing at the airport. www.desertstarweekly.com

The aircraft hit the yard of a house near the southeast corner of Adams Street and San Vicente Avenue, snapping power lines during the crash. The plane caught fire, but the fire crews

quickly extinguished it.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

“The process would be a lot fairer,” he says. “I don’t think you can get to public safety through force and fear. I think it takes rehabilitation and forgiveness.”

The American Civil Liberties Union is currently circulating a petition on the issue, which requires 25,000 signatures to force a government response. It has received 21,700 signatures so far. Source: Public News Service

Saving Armstrong’s moon suit: Crowdfunders raise $500,000

By Desert Star Staff It took a mere five days for a Kickstarter campaign to preserve the historic space suit, which Neil Armstrong wore during his moonwalk in 1969. In that short space of time it managed to reach its $500,000 target.

The Smithsonian Institution launched the campaign last week to conserve, display and digitize Armstrong’s suit in time for the Apollo 11 moon-landing anniversary in 2019.

On Sunday, the fundraiser entitled ‘Reboot the Suit’ reached its goal, with 22 days of the campaign remaining.

The Smithsonian will use the money to preserve the space suit so it can become “a centerpiece of a brand new exhibition, Destination Moon, at the Museum in Washington, DC. Planned to open in 2020, Destination Moon will show those who remember the 1960s, as well as generations born later, how an extraordinary combination of motivations, resources, and technologies made it possible for people to walk on the Moon,” the campaign description said.

Armstrong, who was the first man to set foot on the moon on July 21, 1969, described his feat

as a “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The astronaut’s moon suit was on public display at the National Air and Space Museum from 1976 to 2006. It had to be put into storage in 2006 because it was falling into decay.

It’s planned to exhibit the suit for a period in 2019 as part of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing.

The Smithsonian said its Kickstarter campaign will continue. They have increased the funding goal to $700,000.

According to the institute, the extra money will be used “to

Gov’t hits Fiat Chrysler with record fine, 500k truck buyback

By Desert Star Staff Fiat Chrysler will offer to buy back more than 500,000 Dodge Ram trucks, repair or trade in a million Jeeps, and pay a record civil fine of $105 million, after reaching a settlement with the US government over safety issues that have prompted over two dozen recalls.

According to terms of the settlement, made public

Sunday by the US Department of Transportation, Fiat Chrysler will offer to buy back or repair 578,000 Dodge Ram pick-up trucks, made between 2008 and 2012, that have defective steering parts. It will also have to offer trade-ins or pay for repairs for over a million older Jeep models with rear-mounted gas tanks the government says represent a fire hazard.

The buyback and fines were part of a larger settlement between the automaker and the US government over allegations of misconduct in 23 recalls, affecting over 11 million vehicles.

“Today’s action holds Fiat Chrysler accountable for its past failures, pushes them to get unsafe vehicles repaired or off the roads and takes concrete steps to keep Americans safer going forward,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement. “This civil penalty puts manufacturers on notice that the Department will act when they do not take their obligations to repair safety defects seriously.”

The total sum of the fines the company will have to pay may exceed $105 million, greater than the $70 million fine previously levied against Honda Motor Co. over the failed recall of exploding airbags made by Takata Corp. In

addition to the $70 million initial fine, Fiat Chrysler will have to spend at least $20 million to meet performance requirements detailed in the settlement, and pay another $15 million if the federally appointed recall monitor finds any further violations.

Dodge Ram models included in the buyback are from the 1500 series, made between 2009 and 2012, the 2008 Ram Mega Cab 4x4, and the 4x4 models in series 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 made from 2008 to 2012. The settlement also encompasses the 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango sport utility vehicles, and the Dodge Dakota pickups made from 2009 to 2011.

While the exact number of trucks the company will have to buy back is to be determined, AP estimated buying back just a quarter of the vehicles affected could set Fiat Chrysler

back $2.5 billion, based on the projected value of the trucks and accounting for depreciation. The company is allowed to repair and resell the trucks it buys back, however. Fiat Chrysler said more than 60 percent of the trucks have already been repaired.

Founded in 1925, Chrysler was one of the major US automakers for decades.

The company merged with Germany’s Daimler in 1998, but the alliance failed in 2007.

The company had to be bailed out by US taxpayers following the 2008 financial crisis. Italy’s Fiat later acquired a controlling interest in the company and officially merged with it in 2014.

Together with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors, Fiat Chrysler is considered one of the “big three” US carmakers, and one of the world’s top ten.

By Pamela Price If you’ve admired the statuesque Venus De Milo the Greek island of Milos will sound familiar. One of the most beautiful islands in Greece, surrounded by the Aegean this volcanic jewel is her legendary home, free of traffic jams but flowing in ancient history.

Villages and ‘settlements, ah as Pollonia, Trypiti Zefyna and

Adamas, the main port dots the landscape like a mythological string of jewels. The challenge is carving a few days from your itinerary to make the journey, which is my case was by ferryboat with a return by Aegean Airlines since the water was too choppy for the boat option.

North Coast Repertory Theatre Does Sondheim proud

Sondheim music and lyrics.

It’s really a treat to hear and see singers diaphragmatically breathe while performing. The tone and clarity of the lyrics is enhanced as well as the music when artists employ their training.

Alas, we don’t see enough that these days. If one sings in the shower and their friends tell them how great they sounded last night in the bar that apparently is all of the training they want to endure. Pity. Many a short career lies ahead for tyros.

Not so with this wonderful group of pros. There are so many beautiful, poignant, and memory-inducing moments in this dazzling production that it is difficult to list them all. However, there are always favorite numbers that hit their emotional marks and are felt by all audiences.

My personal favs in this show were: “If Momma Was Married” sung in two-part harmony by Angelina Reaux and Rena Strober; “Getting Married

Today” by Rena Strober is the breath-challenging number that never fails to get applause at its conclusion; “Can That Boy Foxtrot” by Reaux and Strober is a clever little ditty of double entendres that bring smiles to the faces of the singers as well as the audience. “Barcelona” by Dodge and Strober hit a chord with many in the audience if the knowing laughs I heard from the audience were any indication.

Angelina Reaux’s rendition of “I Never Do Anything Twice”, with more trills than a bird aviary, plus her emotionally-haunting “Send in the Clowns” number were two show stoppers among many.

Mongiardo-Cooper and Dodge made the number “Beautiful Girls” from Follies come alive once more. Reaux and Strober’s electrifying “A Boy Like That” from “Westside Story” makes the hair on one’s nape of the neck quiver with emotion. MongiardoCooper’s rendition of “Being Alive” is powerful and moving.

Strober’s “Losing My Mind” is another love song that goes to the core of love and marriage relationships; a leitmotif present in many of Sondheim scores and shows. It’s great stuff not to be missed!

The creative team led by director Ellenstein includes the North Coast Rep Company’s one-two punch duo of Set designer Marty Burnett, and Lighting designer Matt Novotny, along with costume design by Renetta Lloyd, and Sound design

by Melanie Chen; with Props by Benjamin Cole; and projection designs by Aaron Lumley. As usual the technical credits are first rate at North Coast.

It’s a splendid and entertaining evening of theatre that will last in one’s memory throughout the entire summer.

In May, however, he said at the BSA’s annual national meeting that recent events “have confronted us with urgent challenges I did not foresee and which we cannot ignore.”

He cited an announcement by the BSA’s New York City

chapter in early April that it had hired Pascal Tessier, the nation’s first openly gay Eagle Scout, as a summer camp leader. Gates also cited broader developments related to gay rights, and warned that rigidly maintaining the ban “will be the end of us as a national movement.”

The BSA faced potential lawsuits in New York and some other states if it continued to enforce its ban. And the

exclusionary policy prompted numerous major corporations to suspend charitable donations to the Scouts in recent years.

Boy Scout leaders vote on ending blanket ban on gay adults

By David Crary NEW YORK (AP) - The Boy Scouts of America’s top policymaking board planned a vote Monday on ending its blanket ban on gay adult leaders while allowing church-sponsored Scout units to maintain the exclusion if that accorded with their faith.

The new policy, aimed at easing a controversy that has embroiled the Boy Scouts for decades, would take effect immediately if approved by the BSA’s 80-member National Executive Board. Its members were convening for a closed-tothe-media meeting conducted by teleconference.

The stage was set for Monday’s vote on May 21, when the BSA’s president, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, told the Scouts’ annual national meeting that that the longstanding ban on participation by openly gay adults was no longer sustainable. He said the ban was likely to be targeted by lawsuits that the Scouts were apt to lose.

Two weeks ago, the new policy was approved unanimously by the BSA’s 17-member National Executive Committee. It would allow local Scout units to select adult leaders without regard to sexual orientation - a stance that several Scout councils have already adopted in defiance of the official national policy.

In 2013, after heated internal debate, the BSA decided to allow openly gay youth as scouts, but not gay adults as leaders. Several denominations that sponsor large numbers of Scout units including the Roman Catholic church, the Mormon church and the Southern Baptist Convention - have been apprehensive about ending the ban on gay adults.

The BSA’s top leaders have pledged to defend the right of any church-sponsored units to continue excluding gays as adult volunteers.

T H E AT R E ‘Janis Joplin’ Rocks at Pasadena Playhouse and DVDs of Summer

Before the pulsating rock musical “A Night With Janis Joplin” went to Broadway it was presented at the Pasadena Playhouse, starring Mary Bridget Davies in the title role. Davies, nominated for a Tony for her masterful performance, is back in Pasadena once again as the rock and blues superstar, Janis Joplin.

The show, created, written and directed by Randy Johnson, was a phenomenal success in regional theater before it opened on Broadway on October 10, 2013 and Johnson is grateful for the input he received from

Joplin’s brother Michael and sister Laura. Both, according to Johnson, “shared their stories and provided a rare insight into their sister’s life.”

The show, a musical journey, not only celebrates Joplin’s contribution to music, it honors her musical influences as well.

They include: Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone (Yvette Carson), Bessie Smith and Odetta (Sylvia Maccalla), Etta James (Jenelle Lynn Randall) and Chantel (Sharon Catherine Brown.) The onstage band is also outstanding with music director, Tyler Evans on keys, Steven Gregory, guitar,

The show is filled with music, and Act I ends with a rousing “Spirit in the Dark” sung by Bessie Smith, Aretha and Janis along with the Joplinaires. Also, in Act I there are two versions of Gershwin’s “Summertime” sung

by Blues Woman and Joplin as separate solos. There are many songs that include “Stay With Me,””Cry Baby” “Me and Bobby McGee” and of course “Mercedes Benz” belted out by Joplin.

Mary Bridget Davies performs the role of Janis Joplin on Tuesday through Friday evenings at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m., Kacee Clanton performs the role of Janis Joplin on Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m.

Clanton alternated the role on Broadway and has countless theatre, film and TV credits. Report Finds California 38th in Nation in Kids’ Well-Being

By Desert Star Staff OAKLAND, Calif. – California is ranked 38th in the nation in overall child well-being, according to the Kids Count Data Book, released today by the nonprofit Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Researchers looked at federal statistics from 2008 to 2013 and ranked states on topics including health, education and economics in terms of how they affect children.

Jessica Mindnich from the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s California affiliate, Children Now, says the results are unacceptable in such a wealthy state.

“We’re the eighth-largest www.desertstarweekly.com

economy in the world and yet, we have one in four kids living in poverty,” she says. “In fact, we’re ranked 49th in economic well-being.”

One bright spot for California kids in the report is the Golden State is ranked 14th in the nation for children’s health, up from 26th the year before.

Mindnich says the jump in healthcare is due, in part, to California’s aggressive implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The state has also opted to allow parents of undocumented children to enroll their kids in Medi-Cal as of next year.

“As a result of policy decisions over the last few years, having all kids with health insurance is actually a possibility in this state for the first time, and that’s really exciting,” she says.

In education, the survey ranks California 38th, although Mindnich says the state has made significant progress in returning K-through-12 funding to 2008 levels, adding 21,000 additional pre-school slots for needy kids, and implementing Common Core education standards. Source: public News Service

Bobby Brown feels ‘completely numb’ after death of daughter

By Jonathan Landrum Jr. ATLANTA (AP) - Bobby Brown says in a statement that he feels “completely numb” after the death of his daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown.

Bobby Brown said in the statement Monday that 22-yearold Bobbi Kristina was an angel.

Bobbi Kristina died Sunday at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Ga., about six month after she was found, face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub in her suburban Atlanta townhome on Jan. 31.

A police report described it as a drowning.

Bobbi Kristina was the only child of Whitney Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office says an autopsy will be needed to evaluate what led to the death of Bobbi Kristina. The medical examiner said additional lab testing might take several weeks.

Feds: $2M in Bridge Repair Funds Available

T R AV E L Mark Sherman’s Explosive “Bent” on Stage at the Mark Taper Forum

The slaughter of 6,000,000 Jews under Hitler’s extermination plan is well documented and that, in and of itself, is the terrifying face of the Holocaust. It is also an historic fact that the Third Reich rounded up gypsies, the mentally retarded or handicapped, and intellectuals. What is perhaps a lesser known is that gays, referred to as “bents” or “fluffs,” also fell victim to not fitting into Hitler’s manifesto of a pure Aryan race.

Martin Sherman’s powerfully written play, “Bent,” shines a light on that more obscure piece of history, illuminating the treatment of homosexuals under the Nazi regime.

This riveting play, set in the 1930s, was first performed in London in 1979 starring Ian McKellen, followed by its Broadway debut in 1980 starring Richard Gere and David Dukes.

Subsequently, the award-winning play has been performed all over the world. This latest revival, exquisitely directed by Moisés Kaufman, is a welcome addition to the Taper’s family of excellent productions.

On rise, Max, powerfully played by Patrick Heusinger, limps on stage wearing a bathrobe. Following a night of drug-filled debauchery with a leather-clad biker named Wolf, Max is in pain from head to toe.

He has no memory of the night before and is not exactly sure how he got bruises all over his body. He turns his back to the audience to signify urinating, which we hear, but don’t see.

For some reason, the stopping and starting of the “stream” gets a laugh.

Max’s devoted lover Rudy, beautifully played by Andy Mientus, appears and gets busy watering plants, making coffee, scrambling eggs, etc. A dancer at a local night club, he is quite deliberate in his movements making sure he makes as much noise as possible to signal his disapproval of Max’s behavior. In a very comedic way, the playwright allows the events of last evening to unfold, with Max’s awareness slowly creeping through the thick veil of a humongous hangover.

By and by, a stark naked Wolf, fearlessly played by Tom Berklund, walks on stage and positions himself in such a way that Max is staring straight up at his rather heavily endowed genitals. In Max’s drunken stupor, he told him he was a very rich baron and owned a car and a country house to which Wolf received an invitation. The truth is Max and Rudy can’t even pay the rent and are on the verge of being dispossessed from their modest Berlin apartment.

The action is light-hearted and the audience is lulled into a false sense of amusement, not knowing that a shocking one-two punch is looming just seconds away. And then it happens. With an abrupt transition, Nazi storm troopers burst into the apartment and slit Wolf’s throat, for plunging its characters into the world of Nazi horror.

Max and Rudy know they must get out of Berlin and temporally go into hiding in the

Sweet, lovable Rudy goes foraging for food and returns with cheese and an apple that don’t meet Max’s delicate palate developed growing up in a wealthy family who own a button factory. He left the family ten years ago to pursue his homosexual lifestyle. In a desperate attempt to escape, Max asks his Uncle Freddie, well played by Ray Baker, to get him two tickets to Amsterdam. But Freddie, who is discreet with his homosexual encounters, can only secure one ticket, which despite his ability to feel deep emotion, he refuses because of his wish to protect Rudy.

Eventually, Max and Rudy get caught and thus begins the unspeakable acts of brutality, beginning with the train ride to the Dachau concentration camp.

Rudy is dragged off and we hear his piercing screams. He

is brought back semi-conscious and bloodied. Another prisoner named Horst, hauntingly played

by Charlie Hofheimer, cautions Max not to react to the beating, warning if he does, he will be immediately shot. The Nazi officer asks Max if he knows Rudy and he says no. He is asked that question over and over and each time Max says: “I do not know him.” As a test, the officer hands him a club and tells him to beat Rudy. With his own survival at stake, Max executes the command with dire results. In another instance, he has to prove his is not a “fluff” by having sex with a dead 15-yearold girl. It should be noted that the gays wore pink triangles while the Jews wore the familiar yellow ones, with gays ranked even lower than Jews. Knowing this, Max passes himself off as a Jew and gets to wear the yellow triangle.

Act II, a trifle too long, takes place primarily in a yard at Dachau. Max’s job is to move a pile of rocks from one side of the yard to the other and when that’s completed, to move the same pile of rocks back to the original side.

At first Horst is not happy about his new assignment, but realizes it’s better than most other “jobs.” At one point, Max mentions that they are going to miss the Olympics to which Horst replies, “I knew there was a reason I didn’t want to be here.”

In a tribute to Sherman’s writing, he does offer occasional comic relief as otherwise it would be an unbearably painful theatrical experience, which it is not.

As Horst and Max build their relationship, without directly looking at, or talking

to, each other, Max begins to develop real feelings. Almost like peeling away layers of an onion, Heusinger’s Max slowly reveals a love and humanity that had been missing from his life. In an effort to have some semblance of human contact, in a moving, tenderly directed scene, Max and Horst, without touching or looking at each other, make love through their imaginations, using explicit verbal images of their bodies. This sexual fantasy reminds them of their humanity and deepens Max’s ability to feel real emotions. In a mesmerizing act of defiance, Max finally openly owns his sexuality and takes an action that will leave you speechless.

RivCo Roads in Poor Condition

By KMIR News Staff Nearly half of the roads in the Riverside-San Bernardino area are in poor condition, costing the average motorist more than $800 in annual vehicle expenses, according to a study released today.

The Riverside-San Bernardino area was ranked 14th-worst in the nation in terms of bad roads, with 46 percent considered to be in poor condition, according to the study

by TRIP, a Washington, D.C.based transportation research group. The area placed 12th for additional costs to motorists due to bad roads, at an annual average of $812.

The Los Angeles/Long Beach/Santa Ana region was second-worst, with 73 percent of roads in bad condition, costing the average motorist $1,031 a year in expenses such as vehicle deterioration and depreciation, increased maintenance, fuel consumption and tire wear.

Palm Springs POWER Win Fourth Straight League Title

By Dan Marinelli Palm Springs – There were showers in Palm Springs this weekend, but they did not fall from the sky.

Nope, these showers sprayed out of the champagne bottles in the Palm Springs Stadium locker room after the POWER clinched the its seventh Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL) championship (fourth straight).

For the first time in five seasons, the POWER finished second behind the SCCBL’s newest team, the San Diego Force (14-4-2, SCCBL, 37-6-2 Overall). Despite failing to win

the league, the POWER (14-6 SCCBL, 36-13 Overall) still got the last laugh by reaching the playoff championship, while the Force did not.

The POWER went up against another league newcomer the OC Riptide in the series to decide it all. The Palm Springs did not know much about the squad from the O.C. before this season but after losing the first game of the three-game championship series, 6-1, the POWER knew the championship would not be a stroll in the park.

After failing to show up offensively in the first game, the

Riptide were just waiting for the POWER to break out. The next night, the POWER posted eight runs, winning the middle game 8-2.

Palm Springs scored first in game one, but when they scored first in game two, they never looked back. With Luke Barker on the mound for the boys in red and white the Riptide would not be able to mount a comeback like the previous night.

In a close, decisive game three, the POWER edged out the Riptide 4-2 to ultimately win the SCCBL title. Palm Springs pitcher Angel Landazuri

allowed a run in the first inning but settled down and finished a complete five innings to get the win.

The ‘Tide had opened the game shutting down the first nine POWER batters of the game. In the fourth inning, and error consecutive hits from Nick Jackson and Ian Mcoughlin put the home team up 2-1. In the seventh, Palm Springs received two more, much-needed insurance runs on a two-out single from Cody Gaertner.

The Riptide would score one more time in the ninth.

successfully get the close, and seal the title in front of roughly 500 loyal fans.

The POWER played the East Los Angeles Dodgers last night.* Tonight, Palm Springs will start the So Cal World Series against the winner of the Orange County Collegiate League.

While students need to take personal initiative when prepping for these crucial tests, families can lend a helping hand in many ways.

Prioritizing Study Time: Good study habits are important for academic achievement and will come in handy in college.

World premiere musical at Kirk Douglas Theatre

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Gay teenage angst may not be a mainstream issue for a lot of people but times are a changin’ in America. Growing up in America, or anywhere else for that matter, was never a picnic, however, growing up gay was definitely a private matter that led to a lot of alienation and confusion producing: hurtful, harmful, and ambiguous situations for many sons, daughters, parents, and friends.

Todd Almond’s new rock musical “Girlfriend”, with music and lyrics by Matthew Sweet is a vanguard production that addresses the issues of understanding, acceptance, as well as the hopes and dreams of two gay teenage boys who discover one another in rural Nebraska in the summer of 1993.

Tenderly and sensitively directed by Les Waters, artistic director of Actors Theatre of Louisville (ATL) KY, “Girlfriend” is a perfect fit for Waters, who directed “Marjorie Prime” at the Taper last October which I reviewed, and

who is also scheduled to direct “The Christians” at the Taper in January of 2016. I attended the Louisville Humana Festival in 2014 and reviewed the play “The Christians”, directed by Waters who blew me away with its brilliant inventiveness. Audiences at the Taper are in for a real treat come January of 2016.

“Girlfriend”, is a compelling two-hander that stars Ryder Bach as Will, and Curt Hansen as Mike. Will, acts as his and our Greek chorus. He sets the stage as to his own sexuality, pondering how he will ever survive another hot, dusty, Midwest summer of being miserable without any “real” friends to share the vexing issues of growing up in a predetermined, socially rigid, America.

Mike outwardly is a jock. A star baseball player a popular man on campus and well liked with a girlfriend. But he too isn’t fully integrated and ready for full entry into the fabric of American life.

No one wants to make a false assumption about the other.

Eventually, there is a crack in ice and two begin a journey of discovery. As in life choices must be made with decisions that are painful.

The performances of Bach and Hansen are riveting and mesmerizing to watch. Two young men at the height of their powers who have the talent to attack any situation the characters find themselves in and draw their audience right along with them. The youthful audience was noisy at first, but immediately quieted when the highly charged

on stage moments arrived. One could hear a pin drop from an audience of over 300 rapt patrons as the two young actors exchanged their first kiss.

The narrative and action of the story is punctuated by a red hot, four-piece rock band lead

by Musical Director Julie Wolf, featuring guitarists Vivi Rama and Janet Robin, and the Buddy Rich performance style of drummer Jyn Yates who really rocks the auditorium.

Waters’ low key, unseen directorial hand overall is right on.

However, if I had to be picky about the production it would come in the area of the glacial pacing and

pauses between Will and Mike in the scenes where each makes a decision to close the gap and space that guardedly separates them from full commitment to each other. The production which is performed without an intermission, could easily lose a full ten minutes from its current running time of 90 minutes.

Director Waters leads a creative team of scenic and costume design by David Zinn, a snappy lighting design by Ben Stanton and an approprate sound design by Jake Rodriguez.

“Girlfriend” performs at the Kirk Douglas Theatre and runs through August 9, 2015.
