have ignored her admonition.

Regardless our actions or hers, the powerful emotion of ’Love’ is here to stay through all kinds weather. (now, that would be the basis for a wonderful song title).

CV REP Theatre, of Rancho Mirage, opened its second production of its 2017/2018 season with a delightful little four-character musical called “Romance/

They both made par on the 18th twice and the 10th hole once when they had to go back to 18 for the 4th playoff hole. It was getting dark with a huge possibility play would be canceled.

Rahm made birdie on 18 while Landry missed his putt. It was fascinating as fans followed them from hole to hole for the final win. NFL great John Elway won the amateur title with Low Gross, and

amateur David Colby won for low net. Phil Mickelson was the Host again this year, he did not make the cut to play on Sunday, but his fan base followed him around the courses for three days.

The Career Builder Challenge Golf Tournament, Formerly the Bob Hope Classic, was held on January 18th thru the 21st. The new tournament hosted some major changes to the event.

The tickets included the golf plus the entertainment. There is a new Vons Fan Pavilion for people to get food and rest.

The text follows the romantic inclinations of Josefine, (Conchita Belisle Newman) a single, successful, but shy, proprietress of a high fashion women’s wear boutique and Alfred (Christopher Carothers) a wealthy, but bored bachelor, who likes the ladies but is not interested

in marriage (he thinks).

Ms, Newman is the possessor of a lovely, classic, clear Soprano voice. In past musicals, soprano’s I’ve seen and heard, became a challenge to understanding the lyrics. With Ms. Newman, however, it’s a delight to listen and understand the lyrics when she sings in Continues on Page 19

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs International Film Festival, PSIFF, had a lot to offer besides some of the best motion pictures from 77 countries, some shown several times, a most impressive Gala with Red Carpet celebrities, and a Talking Pictures series. They had Movie Stars, Directors, and Producers arriving to do Q&As many times this year. This festival offers so much for everyone to see and do, including many afterparties.

The opening night film, The Post, had hundreds of people attending the after party at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

The food was fantastic, and guests were treated to music all evening by a pianist. Drink stations and a dessert bar were always busy. Everyone

had a chance to discuss the film and meet friends. Free valet service made it easy to come to the party after the movie. An opening night party is always a special event for many. The ticket to the film was your entry into the party.

The closing night film, The Last Movie Star, starring Burt Reynolds and Ariel Winter, held the afterparty at the Renaissance Hotel ballroom. The film attendance was so high they showed it in two theatres that night. The ballroom held several food stations, dessert bars, drink stations and a DJ for music and dancing. There were tables to sit and smaller tables to stand and talk. This is always a great way to end a superior Festival.

His young assistant was not into this old actor and busy with her own life that was, at the least, not a great one. She has to drive him to all the places he wants to visit and people he wants to see.

She ends up looking at this aged actor in a new light. She

Hello Mr. Richardson, I want to thank you for your articles dealing with HOAs. However, [in an article last year] these words you wrote stayed with me because it is in my opinion, the trouble with Davis-Stirling.

You wrote that there is no state agency that enforces the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act. I believe forcing people to hire their own lawyer to enforce this is simply disgusting because most people do not have the funds needed to hire an attorney. Do you support developing an agency to enforce DavisStirling? Thank you.

Dear C.R.: Our neighboring state Nevada has a state agency which governs common interest communities. By all

accounts, the arrangement is working quite well.

However, Nevada has 3,200 associations, while California has at least 45,400 associations (Foundation For Community Association Research 2016 Factbook).

The massive size of this housing sector in California would require a very large bureaucracy, funded almost certainly by a tax on all association residences. So, I think it is unrealistic to expect a state agency in our state to oversee all those associations.

I favor manager licensing in California, if properly established. Many states have manager licensing, and the Community Associations Institute has developed a model for licensing which has proven to work in a number of states. However, the massive number of managers in California makes the creation of a licensing body a major venture, with the many thousands of persons currently managing associations in the state.

Therefore, the best

protection for California homeowners comes from hiring and keeping very good managers and from homeowners becoming much better informed about their rights and responsibilities in their associations.

Thanks for your question, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: I live in a small condo which is unincorporated. One of my neighbors said that we are supposed to be filing papers and paying fees to the Secretary of State. But according to one of your recent columns, it sounds like only incorporated HOAs need to file papers. Is that correct? Do unincorporated HOAs need to file or pay anything? Dear A.D.: All associations, whether incorporated or not, are required by Civil Code 5405 to file two documents, the SI-100 and SI-CID, with the Secretary of State every

two years. The forms are available on line. Incorporated associations failing to file can be suspended pursuant to Civil Code 5405(d), rendering the corporation as not recognized as existing. A suspended HOA’s corporate name is unprotected protected, and it cannot appear in court to defend itself or to pursue a claim. However, there is no penalty stated if the unincorporated association fails to file, meaning there is no reason for those associations to file. Check association corporate status at www. businesssearch.sos.ca.gov.

Ten things you should know about RMDS

By Janice Gough 10. Owners of Roth IRAs do not have to take RMDs. Roth owners can leave the money in there for their heirs to enjoy if they so desire. Roth accounts are funded with after-tax dollars; therefore, when the time comes during retirement that you do need the money, you can withdraw all contributions along with earnings, tax-free. Now, with heirs: there are rules that govern their withdrawals from an inherited Roth, and they will be subject to taxes on the money and are subject to RMDs.

9. RMDs must begin before April 1 of the year after the owner turns Age 70 ½.

In other words, if you turn 70½ some- time this year, you’ll have to begin taking money from your retirement account(s) before April 1 of 2019, unless you haven’t yet retired. If you are a 5 percent owner of the business sponsoring the retirement plan, RMDs must begin once you turn 70½, even if you haven’t yet retired. But if you are not a part owner of the business and you have retired, you need to take that first RMD before next April 1, the RMD you take before April 1 of 2019 is for the tax year 2018; and on December 31 of 2019, you have to take another RMD,

for the tax year 2018. This is because once you’ve turned 70½, the deadline changes and withdrawals must be made by December 31st of all subsequent years or you must pay a 50 percent penalty on the amount of the withdrawal.

8. RMD Rules Apply to All Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plans.

That includes profit-sharing, 401(k), 403(b) and 457(b) plans. The rules also apply to traditional IRAs and IRAbased plans such as SEPs, SARSEPs and SIMPLE IRAs. 7. The IRS provided Tables used to calculate the amount of the RMD for each account.

You must calculate the RMD for each retirement account you have. The tables provided by the IRS are for life expectancies: The Joint and Last Survivor Table is what you use if the sole beneficiary of the account is your spouse and your spouse is more than 10 years younger than you, The Unified Lifetime Table is used if your spouse is not your sole beneficiary or your spouse is not more than 10 years younger. The Single Life Table is used if you are a beneficiary of an account (an inherited IRA).

5 Things to Consider When Buying a Stroller

Last year, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation applied almost 900,000 tons of salt to state roadways.

While all that salt helps make icy roads safer, Harry Campbell, Pennsylvania executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, says it also alters the chemistry of groundwater, rivers and streams.

“That has the potential to affect what lives in that stream, like brook trout or certain types of species that require fresh

“These salts are changing the chemistry of these streams in the longer term,” he stresses. “These aren’t single event scenarios – these are changes that are being felt, even throughout the summer months.”

Amazon’s 100 plus cameras watch you while you shop

By Desert Star Staff Amazon has opened its first checkout free store, which instead of cashiers is manned by more than a hundred cameras that watch and tag every item you pick up.

The excessive surveillance is justified by the convenience that comes from avoiding lengthy queues and the ease that comes with putting your goods straight into your shopping bag and walking out the door.

Amazon Go opened its 1800-square-foot (167-square-meter) store in Seattle Monday.

Customers to Amazon Go must first download the app and provide credit card details, which will be charged after shopping is complete. In order to access the store, the app must be scanned at a gated turnstile, similar to a subway station.

The store has scores of cameras roughly the size of a 2.5-inch drive on a computer, with a tiny LED light, according to Ars Technica.

The much-hyped

opening of Amazon Go apparently prompted some to see if they could deceive Amazon’s all-seeing technology and successfully shoplift from the store.

A New York Times reporter given permission by the store to attempt shoplifting noted that despite his covert attempts to sneak out an item, Amazon charged him for it.

However, a CNBC reporter noted the store didn’t charge her for a yogurt she picked up during a shopping trip Monday.

Amazon says every time a customer takes an item from the shelf, it registers on their online shopping cart. If the customer puts its back on the shelf it is removed from the virtual basket.

Customers can put items straight into their shopping bag and walk out the door when they’re finished.

Amazon will then charge their card and issue a receipt.

Of course, like all technology, the system is a possible target for hackers.

Amazon, for its part, has

not divulged exactly how the operation works.

Amazon responded to accusations that they are replacing jobs with automation by suggesting it’s an opportunity to place employees elsewhere.

“We’ve just put associates on different kinds of tasks where we think it adds to the customer experience,”

Gianna Puerini, Vice President of Amazon Go, said.

The electronic commerce giant has staff on call behind the scenes, though, to assist when the system has difficulty making a determination, according to Recode. It also employs staff to stock shelves and to check IDs in the store’s wine and beer section.

Amazon, which also owns

grocery chain, Whole Foods, has said there are no plans to introduce the technology in any of its other settings.

However, speculation is already brewing that if the automated grocery store proves successful, it may sell the system to other retailers in the future.

Bezos’ net fortune amounted to $106 billion on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as Amazon market capitalization advanced

nearly 57 percent in 2017.

The surge was mostly triggered by enormous holiday sales. The Seattlebased corporation managed to make up 89 percent of online spending among major retailers in five days after Thanksgiving in the US. Apart from Amazon, Jeff Bezos also controls space exploration business Blue Origin, which intends to take tourists to space, and owns American daily newspaper the ‘Washington Post.’

Microsoft founder Bill Gates was overtaken on the rich list by Bezos by a margin of just $500 million as early as July 2017. In November, the head of the online retailer had outstripped the tech tycoon with $92 billion against $90 billion made by Gates.

Forbes, the other major tracker of the net wealth of the world’s richest people,

puts Bezos’ fortune at $104.8 billion. Gates is now worth $91.9 billion, according to Forbes, and $93.3 billion according to Bloomberg.

Bill Gates would reportedly own a fortune of at least $150 billion if he hadn’t given away nearly 700 million Microsoft shares, worth $61.8 billion at today’s value, and around $2.9 billion in cash, along with some other assets since 1996.

Other billionaires to have made impressive gains include Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, who has a total net worth of $87.3 billion, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whose fortune has reached $77.3 billion. Amancio Ortega, the Spanish business tycoon and founder of Spanish fashion retailer Zara, completes the top five on the rich list.

“Eighty two percent of the new wealth created has gone to [the] top 1 percent, while 0 percent has gone to the world’s poorest 50 percent,” said the report.

WSU Researchers Develop Pesticide Protection for Bees

By Desert Star Staff PULLMAN, Wash.

– Two Washington State University researchers have been recognized for their development of a food supplement that helps bee colonies survive the toxic effects of pesticides.

Brandon Hopkins and Waled Suliman developed a carbon micro-particle beekeeper can add to meals that removes pesticide residue from the bees’ digestive system.

Hopkins, who is also an assistant entomology professor at WSU, says farmers may think they need pesticides for crops, but some are suspected of being major contributors to the collapse of bee colonies worldwide.

“It’s really just the agricultural system that we live in and so, this is a way of helping the bees adapt or live within the agricultural community that we are in,” he explains.

Hopkins and Suliman are the winners of the Honey Bee Health Coalition’s nutrition challenge, with a $10,000 prize for their research.

Beekeepers have lost about 40 percent of their colonies over the last decade, according to research by the Bee Informed Partnership and Apiary Inspectors of America.

Hopkins says pesticide levels that aren’t lethal can still hurt bees.

The WSU researchers say their product should be available for beekeepers in one-and-a-half to two years. And Hopkins adds its usefulness will stretch beyond simply adding it to bee feed.

“There are other potential uses for this really innovative idea, in that it could be used to remove pesticides from the bee products themselves, such as the wax or the honey that are produced,” he states.

“So, it has a lot of potential as a product in the bee

industry, and probably beyond the bee industry as well.”

About one-third of the

food Americans eat relies on pollination by honeybees.

Philadelphia Eagles fans go wild after team secures Super Bowl spot

By Desert Star Staff Philadelphia Eagles fans broke into wild celebrations after their team won the NFC Championship on Sunday, dismantling the Minnesota Vikings on their way to the Super Bowl.

Passionate Eagles fans confirmed their status as some of the most raucous NFL supporters once again by clashing with police hours before the start of the game at their home Lincoln Financial Field.

The clashes involving fans and police threatened to spiral out of control, with six officers on horseback being summoned to the scene to prevent further escalation.

Footage taken during the incident shows police detaining a man with a bleeding face.

The Eagles delighted the home crowd by outplaying the Vikings in a crushing 38-7 victory - a win that granted them a spot in their first Super Bowl since 2005.

That sparkled jubilant scenes among rowdy fans who filled the streets of Philadelphia to

celebrate the Eagles’ triumph.

Thousands of people marched down central streets setting off fireworks, chanting slogans and waving flags. Several fans ran in-between cars stuck in traffic with drivers honking in support of the Eagles.

Philadelphia police, who kept control of the heated crowd, registered several incidents involving Eagles supporters.

A bus carrying the Vikings team was also attacked by furious fans who hurled beer bottles and various objects at the vehicle.

Another group of fans nearly burnt down buildings on one street, which was engulfed by an uncontrollable fire in the middle of the road.

Despite Philadelphia authorities’ attempts to prevent disobedient fans from climbing lampposts by greasing them up, several men successfully overcame the challenge by shimmying up them.

Philadelphia police, however, reported no major disturbances, saying that

Disney’s ‘Aladdin -- ’A Magic Carpet Ride’

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The animated Disney film comedy adventure “Aladdin” starred Robin Williams as the voice for a good-hearted genie capable of granting three wishes. In the stage production, currently playing at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, the genie is performed by Michael James Scott who originated the role in Australia, “Aladdin,” based on a tale from the “Arabian Nights,” is the story of a poor young man living on the streets who becomes a prince with the help of a genie in a magic lamp. As the fairytale begins we learn that Princess Jasmine

(Isabelle Mccalla) is soon to be wed, but every prince who comes to ask for her hand is rejected. She is determined to marry a man she loves, even if he is not a prince. To make matters worse, Jafar (Jonathan Weir) an advisor to her father, the Sultan (JC Montgomery) plans to thwart any prince’s chances because he wants to marry her himself, despite the fact that she can’t stand him.

Jafar also wants the magic lamp, but he learns that only Aladin will be allowed to enter the cave where the lamp and countless treasures are stored.

This leads to the grand first act finale number ‘Friend Like Me.” In Act II Ali and his

entourage, led by the genie himself, arrive at the palace seeking the hand of the princess. Things don’t always go well for him however, thanks to Jafar who still wants the magic lamp and Jasmine for himself. Will he be victorious?

The big song number in this act is “A Whole New World,” sung by Aladdin as he and Jasmine fly off for an impressive magic carpet ride.

And there are many problems yet to be resolved before this magical story is completed. Will the genie be set free, or will he once again go back inside the magic lamp? Will Jafar marry Jasmine or will Aladdin

be her prince charming?

The music for “Aladdin” was composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman. Additional songs for the stage musical were written by Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin, who also wrote the book for the stage production.

All four singers got standing ovations after their performances. The singers included the audience on a few songs by having January 24, 2018

them clap to the music. These four singers showed their professionalism by the way they performed the songs of such famous singers.They owned the stage. The band had only a few artists, but they made the concert perfect. The finale had the students from the Musical Theatre University at Rancho Mirage High School come on stage to sing with the artists. The Richards Center was sold out again this year.

Childers said he was so proud of the singers and the event as it was so different from other games in the Desert.

Catching up on 2017 with Potent Releases Before being fully immersed by 2018, I wanted to take a listen back at some terrific late2017 releases as well as an overlooked classic from 2012 deserving of renewed attention.

Tragically Hip ultimately was able to chronicle the end of their 30+ year run with both a documentary featuring rehearsals and glimpses of The Hip’s 15-date Canadaspanning tour (“Long Time Running,” directed by Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier) and a moving concert film captured at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ontario on Aug. 20, 2016 ( “A National Celebration”). Downie lost his battle fighting cancer on Oct. 17, 2017, but both “A National Celebration” (originally aired live by CBC, the concert was reportedly viewed by one-third of Canadians and is among the biggest events in the nation’s broadcast history) and “Long Time Running” prove to be lasting and profound reminder of his and the band’s important place on the rock landscape.

Career Builder Challenge Golf Tournament Continued from Page 1

at some of the more favorite holes. There was no more VIP seating at the 18th hole.

The event was trying to be more family friendly with loads of things for children to do.

This was all new and a way to include more people by having them bring the whole family to the tournament.

They brought in some top name entertainment to spice up the after golf part of the tournament. Huey Lewis

and the News are icons in the music industry and have been around for a long time.

Their fan base is enormous, so there were a lot of people that came to see them along with watching some great golf. The other entertainment at the tournament were the GOO GOO Dolls. They too have a large fan base and the people that stayed or came to watch them play was big.

The entertainment followed after play on a stage just off to the side of the driving range.

The tournament announced a substantial donation to 500 children of the Desert with scholarships.

They also announced that the competition would donate one million dollars to local children’s charities. They held a children’s

“Freud’s Last Session” An Intellectual Debate - Does God Exist?

Most of us have been well indoctrinated that in the interest of harmonious social interaction, that it’s best to avoid bringing up the two most explosive subjects - religion and politics - the latter being the most polarizing subject we face today. That said, based on the book “The Question of God” by Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, Jr., about Dr. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, and C.S. Lewis, a British intellectual and staunch defender of Christian beliefs, Mark St. German wrote the intellectually stimulating “Freud’s Last Session,” now on stage at Ron Sossi’s iconic Odyssey Theatre Ensemble.

Briskly, but sensitively directed by Robert Mandel, what unfolds is a play on an imagined lively debate on the existence of God, as well as thoughts on sex, love, and the meaning of life between two brilliant men wonderfully portrayed by Martin Rayner as Sigmund Freud and Martyn Stanbridge as C.S. Lewis.

The story takes place on September 3, 1939, the day Britain, joined France, Australia, and New Zealand in declaring war on Germany. The play begins in complete darkness as we hear radio announcements about an impending attack on London by Germany. When lights come up, we are in the study of Sigmund Freud, perfectly created by Scenic Designer Peter Hickok, who filled the room with the requisite couch, rows of books, a desk full of papers, photographs, vintage radio, and statues of gods and goddesses. It was so thorough you could almost

smell the scent of pipe smoke.

Freud is waiting for a visitor, 40-year old World War I veteran C.S. Lewis, a professor at Oxford University who has written books on the existence of God. An unseen dog barks as the professor rushes in, apologizing for being late, explaining that the trains were being filled with London’s students, patients from hospitals, and prison inmates to help protect them from the anticipated German bombing of the city. The witty Freud responds about Lewis’ tardiness with, “If I wasn’t 83, I would say it doesn’t matter.”

Commenting on the dog, Freud quips that he uses his dog, “To gauge the emotionality of my patients.” It also becomes clear early in the play that Freud is quite ill and it is revealed that he is suffering from oral cancer, the manifestation of which is a deeply gurgling sound followed by coughing up blood, which for me was an appetite suppressant. Too graphic perhaps? Now professor Lewis has written a book in which he described Freud as a vain, ignorant man, basically desecrating him and, as you can imagine, still remaining respectful of each other, as they do throughout the play, there is an amusing discussion around those comments.

With some niceties dispensed with, these two brilliantly articulate men fill the next eighty minutes with a fascinating scholarly debate on the existence of God, touching on sex and love along the way. Reference is made to “Paradise Lost,” the epic poem in blank verse written by the 17th-century English poet

Freud comments, “Satan is a beautiful creature and someone to blame everything on.” Other famous writers are invoked such as H.G. Wells, J.R.R. Tolkien, and G.K. Chesterton who Freud quips that, “He spoke badly of me so his intellect is questionable.”

Throughout the discussions, no matter which pro-God quotes are invoked, Freud steadfastly contends that the concept of religion is ludicrous and the belief in God absurd. A radio broadcast interrupts their discussion. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain talks about wanting an agreement between Britain and Hitler.

Freud’s reaction: “History is full of monsters but somehow we survive.” They discuss morality.

Lewis: “Moral conscience is something we are born with.” As you would expect in the presence of Freud, soon the discourse became more personal. He reveals that although he came from an Orthodox Jewish family, he was actually raised by a Catholic nanny. Lewis reveals that his mother died when he was nine and that he thought of

his dad as a tyrant and Freud confesses that he despised his father. So, the banter continues and one comment

by Lewis causes Freud to say with his dry sense of humor, “You might just have made a point. Your first.” To break up the constant flow of dialogue, the director incorporated off-stage action such as a siren warning of an imminent attack, a few phone calls from Freud’s daughter Anna, and a radio speech by King George VI declaring there will be no peace negotiations with Hitler.

It would be impossible to find fault with the riveting performances by these two highly skilled actors as well as the spot-on direction. What is missing is real dramatic conflict.

The only very dramatic, albeit kind of stomach turning moment, is when Freud has a bad coughing attack.

However, I appreciated the refreshingly clever dialogue and although we may have heard these arguments before, we may not have heard them couched so eloquently.

Whether you’re a believer in the existence of God, an agnostic, or a pragmatic scientist, your specific point of view will be touched upon in this spirited debate between two highly

intelligent people, each of who is deeply entrenched in his unwavering personal beliefs. However, even if it lacks the overriding dramatic conflict required to be a play, it is refreshing to hear the English language spoken in all of its eloquent splendor.

In saying goodbye to each other, Freud said, “May we meet again” to which Lewis replied: “God willing.” As a footnote, Freud took his life two weeks after England entered World War II, but his legacy is everlasting.

Delightful Jules Verne Story “Around The World In 80 Days”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT) of Solana Beach, CA is gifting its audiences with a ‘master class’ in farce/comedy ensemble acting with its delightful, whimsical, tongue-in-cheek, production of the Jules Verne classic tale “Around the World in 80 Days”.

For those of you who are familiar with the eponymous 19th century novel you may ask yourself how can a story about circumnavigating the world in 80 days, not only fit onto the NCRT stage, but perform the miracle where 39 characters are played by just five extremely talented performers? As Sherlock Holmes always said, “Patience, Watson. All will be revealed.”

Audiences of a ’certain age’ will remember the epic sweep and grandeur of the 1956 Academy Award-winning movie where three extremely wealthy English gentlemen, while playing cards at their club one day, wonder if it is possible to for anyone to actually circumnavigate the globe in under three months now that railroads, sailing ships, caravans, and stagecoaches are accepted methods of travel?

As an inducement to find a candidate they agree to sweeten the adventure with a wager of 20,000 pound sterling to anyone who can accomplish the feat. If that sum feels paltry even for wagers in the 1870’s, the financial exchange rates in

today’s economy would make it little over $ 2 million dollars on the line. That level of wagering is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, it was so intriguing a proposal that one of the gentlemen, Phileas Fogg (Richard Baird), boasts that he will not only accomplish the feat himself, he will do it in 80 days. One would think that the idle rich of Victorian England would have come up with more interesting ways of spending their money.

“80 Days”, freely adapted from the Verne novel, is a visual delight for ages eight to eighty. One doesn’t have to be over engaged with the sprawling story to follow the absolutely creative execution of the story, by the actors thanks to five sensational Equity actors: Richard Baird as Phileas Fogg, Omri Schein as Fogg’s loyal French valet Passeportout, Lovlee Carroll as Auoda, the love interest of Phileas, Loren Lester as the non-threatening Scotland Yard Inspector Fix, (the opposite of Inspector “Javert” from ‘Les Miz’), and Will Vought as a wonderful theatrical general factotum of many characters.

Yes, there are echo’s of the play “The 39 Steps”, a farce/ comedy that also relies on the skill of its actors working at warp speed. One, however, is blown away by the energy and high octane performances and the impeccable timing of this cast and its pace set by director Allison Bibicoff.

Baird’s performance as Fogg, is a study in English discipline, manners, and

decorum. As Fogg, he’s calm, unflappable, completely in charge of every situation, and is a delight to watch him work his magic on an audience.

Schein is a bundle of controlled energy that lights up the stage, especially, when physical comedy is called for. The task of melting the stiff-upper-lip demeanor of Phileas falls to the dark eyed East Indian beauty Auoda, played by Lovlee Carrol. Lester is right there with his mastery of accents, as the redoubtable Inspector Fix and other characters. Vought, whose credits speak of him as a stand-up comedian, is the perfect actor to master many accents and costume changes; always in character even when he walks out of one door, only to reappear from another, maybe 10 seconds later as a different character.

One can only imagine the controlled mayhem taking place backstage with actors, dressers, and backstage personnel, who no doubt, work their derrieres off to insure the audience doesn’t miss a beat of this enjoyable production.

“Around the World in 80 Days” is a true ensemble creative effort led by director Bibicoff, along with resident Design wizard Marty Burnett who has designed NCRT’s last 175 productions. His cohort, and Lighting designer Mattt Novotny, incorporates his creative lighting plot and between them this creative duo knows every nook and cranny of the North Coast stage. The sound design by Dave Mickey lends that extra aural touch of reality; enhancing the overall visual experience. The Prop design by Holly Gillard,

is the icing on an already tasty divertissement. Technical teams and their attention to production details is what will separate a good production from a great production.

Farmers Should Look to Spring with Caution, Optimism

Jack Davis, field specialist at South Dakota State University, said farmers will need to manage top costs and reduce them by 5-10 percent without cutting yield to be profitable.

He said increasingly tight financial times are imminent for the region’s farmers, who are

Court Rejects Federal Quotas, Rules Anchovy Overfished

By Desert Star Staff MONTEREY, Calif. — A conservation group is declaring victory, as a U.S. District Court judge in Northern California has ruled that the federal government’s allowable catch for northern anchovies, set in November, is far too high.

The Pacific Fishery Management Council will now have to revise the catch limit downward, to protect other species that feed on anchovies. Geoff Shester, California campaign director and senior scientist with the nonprofit group Oceana, said the federal fishery managers opted to protect commercial fishing interests and have ignored current science that shows the anchovy population is collapsing.

“So, we were fishing thousands of tons of a very scarce food resource at the

time when pelicans and sea lions were literally starving to death on beaches,” Shester said. “This is really a case of long-term versus shortterm, and how we actually prevent over-fishing.”

Shester said the feds set a limit of 25,000 tons of anchovies based on 30-yearold population estimates.

And last week, the National Marine Fisheries Service proposed making that catch limit permanent.

For now, anchovy fishing will continue as normal because the current fishing quota remains in effect until regional managers come up with a new one.

Shester said Oceana’s lawsuit has resulted in a rare win for wildlife in an increasingly hostile political environment.

While the report highlights how widely animal protection policies can vary, Dunn notes that more than half of all states have improved their laws over the last five years.

“We are recognizing now

as a society that animals are important beings who feel pain, who can suffer,” she states. “They are companions in our lives, and they deserve protection.”

Dunn maintains the findings can be an impetus for change and encourages Kentuckians to speak up.

“Contact your local representatives, because they really want to hear from you,” she urges. “And we’re very encouraged that in the past, because folks get involved, those representatives really hear your voices. And you can make a difference in affecting change for animals.”

Iowa, Utah and Wyoming join Kentucky at the bottom of the list.

The top three states for most effective animal cruelty laws are Illinois, Oregon and California.

On Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services released details of a proposed rule for a new division in its Office of Civil Rights. That division would more vigorously enforce laws protecting the rights of conscience and religious freedom.

refuse to provide abortion or contraceptive services, but also to those who refuse to provide services to LGBT people in need of medical care - and that can be life-threatening.

“Many of us who live in big cities say, ‘Just find another physician,’” Goldberg observed. “But for millions of people who live in smaller towns or rural communities, asking them to seek service elsewhere may simply not be an option.”

Supporters of the proposal say health care workers are being bullied into providing services that violate their religious convictions. But civil rights advocates see the new rule as a federal attempt to create

a “license to discriminate.”

Goldberg pointed out that 19 states have civil rights laws explicitly protecting LGBT people from discrimination.

“What’s troubling about the proposed rule is that, even in those states, the federal government is going to jump in and try to defend people who deny health care to LGBT people and other people,” she said.

The Movement Advancement Project has published a new report offering a comprehensive overview of federal, state and local protections against discrimination in public spaces.

The report comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to deliver a ruling on a case in January 24, 2018

which a bakery owner refused to make a cake for a same sex-wedding because he said it would violate his religious beliefs. Goldberg said a ruling for the baker could affect more than wedding cakes.

“It means that a business could say they don’t want to serve a person of color, or a woman or an interfaith

couple,” she said. “So, it could lead to the erosion of the Civil Rights Act and many other nondiscrimination protections that we have across the country.”

The HHS proposal would apply to hospitals, dentist offices, pharmacies, ambulance services and others.

Father’s kidney plea at Disney World goes viral

By Desert Star Staff A desperate father of five, frustrated over a sevenyear waiting list for a kidney donation, wore an “In Need of Kidney” T-shirt to Disney World over the summer. A Facebook post of the shirt went viral and a donor responded.

“I thought ‘You know, if I can get one person who’s my blood type to just respond

and maybe that’s my match…

You know it’s worth the $35 investment for the shirt,” Robert Leibowitz, 60, of New Jersey told WCBS News.

“This amazing couple, Rocio and Juan Sandoval, took a picture of it and said do you mind if I post it? Within the first week, 90,000 Facebook shares. Three days walking around the park… My phone

wouldn’t stop ringing.”

The kidney donation came from Richie Sully, 39, a father of two from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

“I have an extra kidney, it’s not like I need them both,” Sully told WCBS. After a series of tests and months filled with anxiety, Leibowitz received word that Sully’s kidney was a match.

By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. — Gov. Ralph Northam continues his longtime support for women’s reproductive rights, by rallying alongside women at the State Capitol today on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Despite the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that established a woman’s right to end a pregnancy, women’s rights groups say that right is constantly under threat. Ashleigh Crocker, program director at Progress Virginia, pointed to what she sees as ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to erode reproductive rights.

Crocker said she’s thankful for Gov. Northam’s strong support on the issue.

“We’re thrilled that we have

the support of the governor and all of our statewide elected officials,” Crocker said. “We really believe that women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and choose how and when to have a family.

And we are thrilled that the governor is supportive of that.”

In a speech to anti-abortion activists, President Donald Trump touted a plan to roll back legal guidance from the Obama administration that sought to discourage states from attempting to defund organizations providing familyplanning services, such as Planned Parenthood.

At least 300 members of the Women’s Equality Coalition are expected to attend today’s rally at the Bell Tower in

Capitol Square at 11 a.m.

Crocker said antiabortion groups are fighting a handful of pro-choice bills in the current Virginia General Assembly, including one that would protect women in cases of rape or incest. She noted the bill didn’t make it through a Senate committee.

“We wanted it to pass so that women who are victims of rape and incest can get access to an abortion without having to file a police report and go through all of that trauma,” Crocker said. “But unfortunately, it did not pass.”

Votes fell along party lines for that legislation, with Democrats for and Republicans against.

He and Sully were reportedly doing well after the surgery last Thursday at New YorkPresbyterian Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.

“There are no words, no matter how much I say how much I appreciate,” Leibowitz told WNBC before the surgery.

Leibowitz suffered from chronic kidney disease and was undergoing dialysis treatment three days a week.

He had been in a need of a kidney for three years.

Leibowitz told WNBC he plans to take his donor and the Sandovals to Disney World to celebrate his “dream come true.”

There are more than 101,000 Americans waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant, but only 17,000 receive one each year, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

Groups Concerned Over Possible “Gifts” to Payday Lenders

By Desert Star Staff The payday lending industry has filed its first bill in the Florida Legislature in nearly two decades, as it tries to fight federal consumer protection rules made during the Obama administration.

And those lenders could be getting some help from the Trump administration.

Bureau announced last week that they will delay imposing new rules for short-term, highinterest loans commonly known as payday loans. Alice Vickers, director at the Florida Alliance for Consumer Protection, said she thinks it’s part of an effort to rescind the bureau’s most aggressive regulations.

“I am assuming that this is pretty much a gift to the payday lending industry and

that these rules are going to be severely eroded, in terms of the consumer protections that we were hoping they would provide,” Vickers said.

Meanwhile, Florida lawmakers have started moving forward with the proposal to revamp payday lending rules in the state, allowing customers to borrow larger amounts of money over longer periods of time.

Vickers said the federal rules that would have gone into effect were so proconsumer that it scared the payday loan industry into finding ways around them.

“The payday lending industry has filed legislation at the Florida Legislature to evade the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rules, and to create a product that would be outside of the

reach of the CFPB rules on short-term loans,” she said.

Vickers said no one knows what, if any, new rules might come from the CFPB under acting Director Mick Mulvaney. But in Florida, the payday lenders’ legislation - House Bill 857 - heads to its last committee stop, and an identical version of the bill, SB 920, is moving ahead in the Senate.

He made his way to the second-floor master bedroom where he found his wife in bed with her boss, Albert Lopez, 58. Donis also filmed two short videos of the shocking encounter - which he reportedly forwarded to his wife’s relatives.

The couple were granted a divorce in February the following year and Sean Donis thought the encounter was behind him. That is, until he received a letter from his ex-wife’s boss in July 2017, stating he had been indicted by a grand jury on charges of felony burglary and unlawful surveillance.

“I feel like it’s unjust what they’re doing to me,” said Donis to the New York Post ahead of his first court appearance in September 2017. “It’s like I’m being punished twice.”

He pleaded not guilty.

His trial began Friday and is expected to run

until Tuesday. He is facing a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Lopez testified in court that the encounter left him traumatized and unable to sleep. He also claims Donis’ wife told him they were separated at the time of the affair.

In opening statements, Donis lawyer Howard Greenberg argued his client “should be given a medal for the amount of restraint he showed when he entered that scene.”

Whereas Rockland county prosecutor Nabeela Mcleod insisted that even though her Lopez slept with a married woman, he is still the victim. “Sean Donis broke into his home and invaded his privacy” by using a cellphone to record the startled couple in bed “without their consent or permission,” she said.

Man facing 15 years in jail for catching ex-wife cheating

By Desert Star Staff A New Jersey man is facing 15 years in jail after he used an iPhone app to track his wife which led him to her boss’ bedroom.

Sean Donis, 37, says he was minding his kids in April 2016, while his wife

went to dinner with friends and he went searching for his son’s iPad. When he couldn’t locate it, he used the ‘Find My iPhone’ app to track the device and saw it traveling toward the New York state line.

Suspicious that the

iPad was with his wife of six years, Nancy Donis, 38, Sean tracked the device to an unknown location and arrived at his wife’s parked car outside a house he didn’t recognize.

Donis tried the front door which was left unlocked.

Kentucky school shooting: 2 dead, 17 injured, 15yo suspect in custody

By Desert Star Staff Two students have been confirmed dead and 17 other students were injured in a shooting at a Kentucky high school Tuesday morning.

Two 15-year-old students, one male and one female, were fatally shot by a fellow 15-year-old male student armed with a handgun. The shooter is currently in police

custody and will be charged with murder and attempted murder, according to Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin.

Out of the 19 injured students, 14 of those received gunshot wounds according to Gov. Bevin who gave an emotional press conference in Marshall County at 12:30pm local time. The female student died at the scene,

while the male victim passed away at a local hospital.

The shooter was “peacefully” apprehended at the scene by police according to Gov. Bevin. “It is a tragic day for all of us,” Commissioner for State Police Rick Sanders told reporters during the press briefing.

Family members of all affected students have been

notified, however further information pertaining to the case, including the shooter’s identity and possible motive, will not be released so as not to compromise the investigation.

The school had active shooting training a few weeks ago and “students did exactly what they were trained to do,” according to Sanders.

The school in Benton had over 1,000 students in grades 10 through 12. Marshall County has a population of about 31,000 people.

This is the second shooting at a US high school in the last 24 hours. On Monday, a teenage girl, 15, was shot by a 16-year-old boy in the cafeteria of Italy High School in Texas.

NAACP Investigates Racist Fliers Found in Iowa City

Racial minorities are a small percentage of the Iowa population, but hate groups apparently have targeted those living in Iowa City. (campusreform.org)

By Desert Star Staff The Iowa-Nebraska NAACP is investigating white supremacist literature found in several cities, including the most recent instance in Iowa City.

The flyer distributed in an Iowa City neighborhood showed a blonde, white woman under the heading, “Love your race.” It included

the logo and web address of the National Alliance, a white nationalist group.

Betty Andrews, the president of the Iowa-Nebraska NAACP branches, said such fliers often appear to have a mixed-message. They could be interpreted as harmless, but their intent is to intimidate.

“So, on the surface, being ‘proud of your race’ doesn’t

sound like an issue,” Andrews said. “But if your group is actually promoting being proud of your race to the detriment of others, that’s a problem.”

She said Latinos are Iowa’s largest ethnic minority, at 6 percent of the population, while African Americans make up 3.4 percent.

Andrews said racebaiting groups often recruit

people who are lonely and want to feel like they are part of a community.

“Of late, our state has seen a number of incidences, many of them involving young people,” she said. “And these organizations are notorious for recruiting young people.”

What’s more, by distributing the “whitesonly” message in the southeast side of Iowa City, the National Alliance chose one of the state’s most racially-diverse areas.

Andrews said she believes some of the racist rhetoric now reportedly used at the highest levels of the U.S. government has emboldened similar actions in places like Iowa.

“Not only is probably Iowa fertile ground,“ she said, “but also, our country is becoming more and more of a place that makes people like me, in my position, concerned.”

In the past year, she noted, Iowans have seen cross burnings and racist graffiti on college campuses, and heard racially charged banter by radio announcers at sporting events.

Needle Exchanges Called Powerful Weapon to Fight Opioid Abuse

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – With Ohio still in the grip of the opioid crisis, new data suggests better education is needed about the benefits of one harm reduction tool.

Needle exchange programs allow injection drug users to exchange used syringes for new, sterile syringes.

In a recent poll, 6-in-10 Ohio adults who said they are familiar with the programs were more likely to be in favor, to just 4-in-10 who were less informed about the exchanges.

Melissa Green, harm reduction manager at Columbus Public Health, which operates an exchange, says people who inject drugs are about five times more likely to enter addiction treatment when they engage in harm reduction efforts.

“The intent is to keep clients alive and as healthy as possible until the day that they are ready for treatment,” she explains. “This is a really critical avenue in being able to empower clients to think about behavior modification and ultimately get them into recovery.”

There are nine needle exchanges operating in Ohio, but the poll, released

by Interact for Health, found less than half of Ohio adults are somewhat or very familiar with the programs.

“It’s really meeting people where they are with addiction and helping them keep from getting further sick by preventing the secondary infections of Hepatitis and HIV while we are educating them and testing them as

well as getting them into treatment,” he states.

Hamilton County last week announced it is expanding its syringe exchange program, which Ingram says is another step toward ending the opioid epidemic.

“We have to face this monster,” he stresses. “Saying it’s not in our backyard

and not in our community is just absolutely wrong.

This is such a pervasive problem in our society.”

Opponents maintain needle exchanges enable those who are addicted to continue using.

But research shows the programs help reduce the spread of infectious diseases without increasing drug use.

Her co-star Mr. Carothers, is a handsome Lyric-Baritone, with the voice that perfectly complements his leading lady. Together, they make a handsome turn-of-the century couple engaged in the time honored European tradition of romantic love in Old Vienna.

Two musical numbers, for me, stand out: “I’ll Always Remember the Song”, sung as a duet reminiscent of old MGM days of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy, and Ms. Newman’s poignant solo number “The Night It Had to End”.

Act One flows seamlessly, thanks to nice directorial touches by Celona, where he punctuates and bridges scene changes by having dancer/actors Robyn Cohen and Eric B. Anthony gracefully waltz across the stage at the end of each scene; sweeping the audience along with them to the next scene.

Act Two, titled ‘Summer Share’ is from the French play “Pain de Menage” and flashes forward some 118 years to two homes in The Hamptons, on Long Island. Two married couples Barb (Robyn Cohen) and Sam (Christopher Carothers) ; Monica (Conchita Belisle Newman and Lenny (Eric B. Anthony) both with families are neighbors and longtime friends.

Romantic love is still in Vogue, but the world has seen some social changes.

No longer is divorce a stigma.

We’ve seen the changes that wars bring to society. Old strictures and traditions begin to slip away. We’re under the spell of the digital age now.

for those illusive arrows of Eros’ to hit their targets, if only for a short while.

Lenny and Monica and Sam and Barb are trusting, grounded, couples who are happy and content in their marriages. Monica and Sam have always enjoyed each other’s company in a Platonic way. Both love to flirt and share fantasies, sort of probing each other’s inner fantasies; testing the waters of infidelity with the possibility of a future affair. But, love affairs between married friends is a recipe for disaster.

Two of the non-participants are bound to be hurt, and two families will never be the same, despite the short term adrenaline rush one may get from the experience. Guilt, remember, also is a powerful and destructive emotion, and it corrosively remains for years. Let the buyers beware. But, no spoiler alerts from me here. One must come and see this splendid production for oneself.

Ms.Newman and Mr. Carothers have great on stage chemistry which is displayed throughout, but shines in the Act Two musical numbers: “It’s Not Too Late”, and solos by Ms. Newman, “How Did I end Up here?” and Mr. Carothers with “Moonlight Passing Through a Window”, are all rendered with tenderness and aching poignancy.

Ms, Cohen and Mr. Anthony’s rendition of “Small Craft Warning” and “Think of The Odds”, hits its mark informing the audience there’s dangerous waters ahead.

And the numbers “So Glad I Married Her”, and “Romantic Notions”, sung by the entire company are all winning musical numbers, thanks to the four-person band of accompanying musicians:
