INDIO HILLS – Riverside County’s community cleanups start-up for the year with a bulky waste disposal and paper shredding event in Indio Hills on Saturday, January 21.

The event will give residents within the community of Indio Hills the opportunity to dispose of bulky waste items such as furniture, appliances, tires without rims, and more, and shred papers for free.

The items will be accepted at the Indio Hills Community Center in Indio Hills, 80-400 Dillon Rd., from 8 a.m. to noon.

Residents will need to unload their waste items out of their vehicles.

“These clean-ups help the community,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez.

“They provide a service to residents who want to dispose of items accumulated over the past few months. These events also help keep our communities clean and, as a free resource, they provide an alternative to illegal dumping.”

Accepted bulky items include tires without rims –up to nine per trip, furniture, appliances, bundled tree limbs and branches, and electronic waste.

Up to five boxes of documents will be accepted for shredding. No binders will be accepted.

Hazardous materials will NOT be accepted, including batteries, pool chemicals, transmission, brake fluids, herbicides, fertilizers, gasoline,

Local Police Departments See Decrease in Crime

Two deputy deaths within one month.

“With the data and the recent incidents, the loss of the two deputies, our officer safety is elevated,” Palm Springs Police Department Lieutenant Gustavo Araiza shared.

We’re seeing it here at home but also across the nation.

“More officers were killed nationally in the line of duty,” Indio Police Chief Mike Washburn explained. “This is really about society in general. There’s less respect for the rights of others.”

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 226 officers died in the line of duty.

64 of those were caused by gunfire.

This is a 21% increase in firearm-related deaths compared to the average number between 2010 and 2020.

“Whether it be through

social media or the news, you tend to see a disregard for authority, and that’s where a lot of the problem is,” Lieutenant Araiza continued.

In Palm Springs, crime was down in nearly every category last year.

But cases of violent assaults on officers were up by 72%.

“We ended up having 28 incidents where there was an assault on an officer,” Lieutenant Araiza said. “That’s 28 cases, but that involved 43 different officers during those incidents. Fortunately, we didn’t end up with too many officers that were out on extended injury, but what we saw, this is an increase.”

Palm Springs Police Chief Andrew Mills is already making changes.

“We’re doing an analysis and metrics to determine what the proceeds are to these events taking place,” Chief Mills explained. “Was it a mental health issue or a substance abuse issue?

On the other end of the valley, crime in Indio stayed steady.

Unlike PSPD and other areas across the nation, Indio did not experience any officer assaults in 2022.

“We did not see that,” Chief Washburn said. “If it was, it was so minimal.”

But following the deaths of Riverside County Deputy Isaiah Cordero and Deputy Darnell Calhoun, law enforcement agencies across the desert feel the impact.

“When we lose an officer, that’s like a brother or sister that we have lost,” Lieutenant Araiza said. “The loss of one, it’s hard to get over. The loss of two, you

know, a lot of our officers are a bit somber right now.”

“Whenever you have one, you’re not healed; you’re not done grieving,” Chief Washburn shared. “Then you have a second one; it’s very difficult for families as well…It’s a reminder that we just don’t know if we’re coming home today.” SourceCourtesy:

Presidential Major Disaster Declaration Expanded

SACRAMENTO –

Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that the White House had added the counties of Monterey, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara to the Presidential Major Disaster Declaration. He issued to support the state’s storm response and recovery efforts, joining the counties of Merced, Sacramento, and Santa Cruz initially approved for assistance

this weekend. Last week, President Biden also approved the Governor’s request for a Presidential Emergency Declaration to bolster state, local, and tribal government storm response efforts.

“I’m deeply thankful for the incredible support of our federal partners throughout this emergency as we’ve worked around the clock to save lives and help Californians whose lives

have been turned upside down by these storms,” said Governor Newsom. “As communities across the state turn towards recovery, we will continue to work closely with our federal and local partners to support them.”

The Presidential Major Disaster Declaration makes residents in impacted counties with damage or losses from the storms eligible to apply for federal disaster assistance. It

also includes public service to help state, tribal, and local governments with ongoing emergency response, recovery costs, and hazard mitigation. Additional impacted counties may be included as state, regional, and federal officials continue to assess the scope of the damage.

Governor Newsom, in recent weeks, has met with evacuated residents in Merced County, assisted with storm

preparedness work in Santa Barbara County, and surveyed storm damage in Santa Cruz County and Sacramento County with state and local officials. As a result, the Governor has proclaimed a state of emergency statewide and issued an executive order to further assist the emergency response and support impacted communities across the state.

Aging, said people who do not respond to the renewal packet will lose coverage.

“Lots of individuals might have moved, might have had a change in income or a change in household size, or a new job or lost their job,” Huyenh-Cho observed. “It is really important to update contact information such as addresses and phone numbers with

the county office.”

The state has an ambassador program to educate community health workers on the resumption of renewals and about the unwinding of the public health emergency, which is expected to end sometime this spring.

Huyenh-Cho noted Justice in Aging is also part of the public education campaign to ensure people who meet

the income requirements don’t fall off the rolls.

“Now, individuals can be terminated from Medi-Cal benefits due to an increase in income or an increase in assets for older adults subject to the asset test,” Huyenh-Cho explained.

Last year, California increased the limit on assets a single older person can have and still qualify for MediCal, changing the amount from $2,000 to $130,000.

(TWW), such as fence posts and railroad ties, is also considered hazardous and is not accepted at cleanups or household hazardous waste collections.

Alberto Lopez, 26, Charged With Murder in Fatal Palm Desert Crash

old Coachella aficionado; he was arrested for DUI and other crimes. The crash has been upgraded to a DUI slash murder investigation. For now, it is not clear what led up to the accident. The Riverside County coroner’s office identified the victim as Sara Ahmadie of Palm Desert.

on suspicion of murder into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio, where he remains held on $1 million bail, according to inmate records.

A drunk driving crash in Palm Desert is not for the faint of heart. A speeding burgundy Dodge Durango

rear-ended a stopped red Hyundai Elantra in a fatal collision that killed a 36-year-old woman in Palm Desert. Fortunately, there

was only one passenger in the car at the time of the crash, and no other vehicles were involved. The driver is believed to be the 26-year-

Although there is no guarantee that Alberto Lopez was the drunken driver, his arrest is not all bad news. The incident could have gone much worse if it weren’t for the efforts of local law enforcement. One of the biggest threats to drivers is speeding tickets. So, if you are a driver in the Coachella Valley area, do your part to make the road less traveled a safer place to be. The best way to do this is to follow the rules of the road and keep calm. Lopez was subsequently booked

The other thing to keep in mind is that there is a dark side to being the victim of a driver who has been drinking. This can include lost wages and other financial woes. Fortunately, the RCSD offers traffic safety programs to help alleviate these accidents. Hopefully, this will help prevent more drunk driving accidents and save lives in the long run.

Anyone with information on the fatal crash was asked to call Deputy Claro Sanchez from the Palm Desert sheriff’s station at 760-836-1600 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-782-7463.

Sacramento – On the National Day of Racial Healing, Assemblymember Dr. Corey A. Jackson introduced House Resolution (HR9) to reform outdated attire policies in the State Capitol.

The following is a statement made by Assemblymembers Corey A. Jackson, DSW, and Ash Kalra, addressing the outdated attire policy in the State Capitol.

As the State continues its progress toward diversity and equity, it is essential to recognize that the work begins with the Legislature. Therefore, as members of the State Assembly, we unite to introduce a House Resolution (HR9) to amend the chamber’s rule on floor attire to include a definition of professional attire that reflects California’s

rich and diverse religious and cultural traditions.

According to Assembly Rule 118.1, “Members of the Legislature, officers or employees of the Legislature, accredited members of the press, or any other persons may be restricted from admission to the Floor of the Assembly if they are inappropriately attired.”

Eurocentrism, which refers to a bias on the vantage point of European and Western cultures, has played a role in establishing what is considered “appropriate” fashion, often forcing individuals to adopt various forms of professional attire that conflict with their ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Consequently, individuals who wish to wear ancestral garments are considered

unprofessional and prohibited from stepping onto the Assembly Floor.

With increased emphasis on anti-racism and inclusion, the Legislature and its members must adopt this House Resolution to

welcome professional attire of all cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities. Hence, we can serve the people in the State of California.

Assemblymember, Dr. Corey Jackson represents Assembly District 60,

which includes the cities of Riverside, Moreno Valley, Perris, Hemet, San Jacinto, and the unincorporated areas of Mead Valley, Nuevo, and Good Hope.
