On Saturday, February 9, 2019, UCPIE’s “Team Freedom” rides/walks the

Tour de Palm Springs. Team Freedom consists of children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy, down syndrome, spina bifida, autism, and other special needs. UCPIE created it in 2012. Team Freedom started with just one rider.

This year UCPIE’s Team Freedom consists of 80+

special needs children and adults riding/walking the Tour de Palm Springs! 100% of the proceeds from Team Freedom at Tour de Palm Springs support UCPIE’s seven afterschool programs and their adaptive bike program! Thanks to the on-going support of our local communities UCPIE can continue to provide their adaptive bike program

and seven after-school programs for children and adults living with disabilities.

Community grants and fundraising efforts to fund these two UCPIE programs. Everyday special needs children all the way from Mecca to Desert Hot Springs attend the Skill Builders after-school program which helps program participants develop and improve five

vital skill areas: socialization, independence, communication, safety, and health.

Reining in Money in Nebraska Politics

By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. – It’s been nine years since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark Citizens United decision, and grassroots groups in Nebraska are

still struggling to limit the influence of money in politics.

Jack Gould, issues chairman for the advocacy group Common Cause Nebraska, says the ruling has opened up the floodgates

for so-called dark money, anonymous and unlimited contributions made through third party groups, to tilt U.S. elections.

“It seems as if people who have money get to

speak louder and more often than people who don’t have money, which doesn’t sound very much like the democratic process,” he states.

The 2010 Supreme Court decision, citing previous rulings, held that political spending is a form of protected speech under the First Amendment, and the government cannot limit corporations from spending money to influence the outcome of elections.

Overturning the court’s ruling would require a constitutional amendment, and Gould notes his group and others are engaged in a 50-state campaign to do just that.

By Desert Star Staff FBI agents captured a young man who allegedly became radicalized and planned to wage jihad by blasting a hole in the White House with a portable anti-tank weapon and massacring everyone inside.

Hasher Jallal Taheb, 21, from the Atlanta suburb of Cumming, Georgia, was arrested during an FBI sting on Wednesday. The man was charged with intent to attack the White House and a number of iconic landmarks in Washington, DC, US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Byung Jin Pak told reporters.

The agents apprehended Taheb in a parking lot as he was trying to sell his vehicle in order to buy weapons and explosives, according to the FBI. The suspect caught the FBI’s attention in March after

the agency was tipped off that he became “radicalized.” In August, Taheb put his vehicle up for sale, and an agent came into contact with him acting as a prospective buyer.

As the two entered talks, Taheb allegedly shared his plans of waging jihad and becoming a “martyr.” He expressed disdain towards the US and Israel, sought accomplices and wanted to eventually attack the White House, the FBI said. He is even said to have shown the agent a hand-drawn map of the White House ground floor and the West Wing, where the US president’s Oval Office is located.

In an affidavit filed to the court, the FBI alleged that Taheb sought to acquire semiautomatic firearms, hand grenades and a portable AT-4 anti-tank weapon, commonly known as a bazooka, to storm the White House with. The

suspect described how he would use the AT-4 “to blow a hole in the White House” so he could then enter and “take down” as many people as possible, FBI Special Agent Tyler Krueger wrote.

At some point, Taheb also said that he wanted to

target the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial and a synagogue as well, according to the authorities.

Nguyen Van Nhat, 48, was taken to the General Hospital in Vietnam’s Quang Tri province with a blood-alcohol level a staggering 1,119 times higher than the limit. Medics immediately transfused Nhat with three cans of beer to dilute the amount of methanol in his system and give his liver a chance to process

the toxic form of alcohol.

“The therapy with 15 cans of beer is rather unusual, but well understood,” emergency physician Hans-Jörg Busch from the University hospital of Freiburg, told German press agency dpa.

“Much more important [than the kind of alcohol used] is that the therapy is immediately initiated.”

Nhat regained consciousness after the 15th can of beer was administered and was discharged from the hospital three weeks later.

Gould says he hopes the ninth anniversary of the Citizens United decision will move more Nebraskans to join efforts to blunt the influence of money in politics.

“People need to start putting pressure on candidates – not only at the state level, but also at the federal level – letting them know that their voices need to be heard, and that they’re concerned about the fact that big money is speaking louder than their $20 donation,” he stresses.

Federal Employees to Rally Against Government Shutdown

By Desert Star Staff DETROIT – Federal employees fed up with the government shutdown are planning to brave the cold and rally in front of the Federal Building in Detroit on Friday.

About 2,000 Michiganders work for federal agencies, and a little more than half are working without pay, while the rest are locked out of their jobs until the shutdown is resolved.

Mark Coryell, president of the union that represents local employees of the Environmental Protection Agency in Ann Arbor, says the families are really starting to feel the pinch.

Best Of The Fest Concludes PSIFF

By Pamela Price The 26 films officially closing the 30th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Best of the Fest were screened throughout the day on January 14th at four theatres including the Mary Pickford in Cathedral City. These films ranged from Jury awards to others “popular with the audiences.” This mélange of movies ranged from Bath Tubs over Broadway to Kaye Ballard-The Show Goes On to several on the more severe side Such as Who Will Write Our History? This 90-minute documentary in

the category of New Jewish Stories delved into the horrific history of the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII where a team of Jewish archivists and historians secretly documented eye witness accounts of Nazi horrors which were so inhumane I won’t mention them here. The fact that this documentation was secretly archived surviving war-torn Warsaw, Poland is a miracle in itself. Director Roberta Grossman managed to reveal the backstory of this archival survival of what has now become identified as the Oyneg Shabes Archive. This risky project

was led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum, who managed with his colleagues to archive this collection of photographs and documents, undercover.

They were collectively risking their lives with the mission of archiving this legacy it was miraculously bombing and fires after being carefully hidden during the last days of WWII. Thousands of documents collected over three years were literally in hiding, archived, stored and subsequently secretly buried.

After the Warsaw ghetto was abandoned in 1943, the survivors were taken to concentration camps. Yet, the

Photo courtesy of Palm Springs International Film Festival evidence remained, hidden underground. Locating the Oyneg Shabes Archive was like an archeological expedition. Discovering how this traumatic time capsule survived bombings and the ravages of time, is an inspiring epic in itself.

The landmark documentary reveals the how this clandestine group of journalists, scholars and

community leaders came together to preserve the truth about this notorious ghetto.

They succeeded in defeating the Nazi propaganda machine with “ the pen rather than the sword” said Harvey S. Karten in Big Apple Reviews. The documentary is narrated by Academy Award nominee Joan Allen and Academy Award winner Adrian Brody.

“Incredibles 2” Is Action Packed Fun From Disney Pixar Movies have always been a helpful distraction under challenging times, whether it be war, economic depression, or personal trauma. My family suffered a loss of a loved one recently, and “Incredibles 2” gave me a chance to escape the sorrow, and be entertained if only for a couple of hours.

It’s been 14 years since “The Incredibles” made its Oscar-winning screen debut.

Now, this superhero family is back again in an animated sequel featuring the entire family headed by a superhero dad known as Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson).

His wife Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) who literally can get bent out of shape in the line of duty and their three children, teenaged Violet (Sarah Vowell), her brother Dash (Huckleberry Milmer) and baby Jack-Jack who is just discovering his superhero powers. One of the funniest scenes in the film involves the baby and his encounter with a feisty raccoon scrounging for food in their trash cans. Guess who wins!

The film was written and directed by Brad Bird (“Iron

Giant,” “Ratatouille” and the first “The Incredibles”).

Bird also gives voice to superhero suit designer Edna Mode, a takeoff on fashion designer, Edith Head.

Early in the story, the government decides to shut down funding for superheroes who often cause structural damage in pursuit of villains.

This leaves the family without a job--a job they dearly loved. At this point, they are contacted by a multi-multi-millionaire Winston Deavor (voiced by Bob Odenkirk) and his sister Evelyn (Catherine Keener) who want to show the world that superheroes are a resource that must endure. However Winston. aka “Win,” wants to focus primarily on Elastigirl (Mrs. Incredible) which leaves her husband at home watching the kids, making meals and helping his son with the “New Math” which he has to learn as he mutters “What was wrong with the “Old Math?”

Seeing him cope with being a Mr. Mom is endearing as he tries to do his best and still be a good dad to all of the children. This also gives

the film most of its charming and comedic moments.

There is also plenty of fast and furious action as Elastigirl tries to take on crime singlehandedly, without the help of any other superheroes or her now stay at home spouse.

“Incredibles 2” is rated PG for action sequences and some brief mild language.

Running time is 1 hour 58 minutes. The Blu-ray extra

features include an animated short entitled “Bao” about an Asian mother whose son is her little “dumpling.” Another feature revolves around Aunt Edna (voiced by director Brad Bird) who is the superhero costume designer for the Incredibles family. And last, but by no means least, is “Strong Coffee: Animation With Brad Bird.” This lets us watch the director at work as he interacts

with the film’s animators. It gives us insights into how an animation film is constructed.

Local Media Speaks Out During Erica Meeting

Walker is the chairman for the Technical Advisory Committee for ERICA, that regulates the law enforcement radio communications systems says, he says they were ordered to cut off local media access or they would be cut off themselves, “We’re just at a point where we have to comply with the department of justice standards so that we can maintain our CLETS, California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System access which gives us the

ability to operate as a law enforcement agency so this has nothing to do with us trying to take away access from the media for some reason of punishment or to prevent the public from having information we have a duty to protect that information and that’s what we’re abiding by.

Makinen says the committee’s claims the department of justice ordered the shutdown are false, “The Desert Sun did some investigating we requested all the email communications between ERICA and DOJ and what we found is that is not true, that is not true, it was only after the access was cut off that then ERICA started talking to DOJ about whether or not this was in line with their guidelines, and in fact DOJ said they never ordered ERICA to do this.”

Trump cancels Pelosi’s foreign trips over shutdown

By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has canceled House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s upcoming

trips to Belgium, Egypt and Afghanistan, citing the ongoing government shutdown, one day after

your trip to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan has been postponed, “Trump wrote in a letter to Pelosi, shared with the press. “We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.”

“Of course, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative,” the president jibed.

Pelosi’s flight was due to depart at 3pm, while the White House circulated the letter around 2pm, according to Fox News.

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has announced plans for 20 new ground-based interceptors to be placed in Alaska which could “shield every city” in the country.

Speaking at the Pentagon on Thursday, Trump announced the details of a “Missile Defense Review” undertaken by his administration. The new report outlined “six major changes” in the US’s missile defense strategy, including the Alaska interceptors.

Trump said the goal is for the US to be able to “terminate any missile launches from hostile powers, or even from powers that make a mistake.”

“The world is changing — and we’re going to

change much faster than the rest of the world, ” US president declared adding that the country could not “simply build more of the same or make only incremental improvements.”

Trump pointed specifically to an Iranian missile launch test which failed on Tuesday and had been criticized by the White House.

Trump also said that space would be recognized as the “new war-fighting domain” and that his previously promised ‘Spaceforce’ would be “leading the way.” His upcoming budget, he said, would invest in a “spacebased missile defense layer.”

The president said that the US was a “good player” on the world stage, but that Washington

could be “far worse than anybody else, if need be.”

Half Staff Flags Honor Cathedral City Mayor Greg Pettis

NBC PS Max Rodriguez The flags flew half-staff at Cathedral City City Hall, Mayor Greg Pettis, dies at age 63, he was one of the longest elected officials in the Coachella Valley.

The loss of Mayor Pettis is truly being felt through the entire Coachella Valley and not just the city he served for more than two decades.

Councilmember Mark Carnivale was one of Pettis closest colleagues, he remembers the loss of a friend.

“What a loss just occurred at Cathedral City,” Carnivale said. “His thinking was from his heart, whether it was sanctuary cities, was it plastic straws, or a nude bike race he was always in the forefront of ideas in Cathedral City.”

His experience of more than 20 years as an elected official is what many of his colleagues said they will miss.

Lisa Middleton, Palm Springs Councilmember worked closely with Pettis on a few projects.

Middleton said, “I would come up with a new idea and Greg would tell me how old my idea was in fact, and that it had been done this many years ago.”

Pettis also made Cathedral City history by becoming the first openly gay mayor.

Middleton said, “Greg was involved in the first pride event that took place in the CoachellaValley.”

Mayor Pettis shared with us his advocacy for the LGBTQ community who served in the military back in 2018 while speaking about the Desert Memorial Park’s LGBTQ Veterans Memorial in Cathedral City.

Pettis said, “We’re still hopeful President

The County Supervisor for the Coachella Valley, Manuel Perez said through a statement, “I considered Gren not only a colleague but also a friend and an ally in the struggle for social justice and civil rights.

North Coast Rep Theatre Puts Buffalo NY Back On The Map in a Zany Farce

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association If ever an American city received an undeserved bum rap just for being known as the “snow capital’ of America its Buffalo, New York. A hundred years ago It was an important, vibrant, port city, and a stop for every theatrical touring company in the country. It’s still a lovely city that attracts thousands of visitors every year to see the near-by famous Waterfalls at Niagara, one of nature’s great wonders.

It also became the location city where one of America’s most prolific and prodigious playwrights, the reigning King of comedy/farces Ken Ludwig, set his 1995 play “Moon Over Buffalo”, now on stage at North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT), in Solana Beach.

The madcap comedy play, solidly directed by Matthew Wiener follows in the tradition of Ludwig’s 1987 Tony Award-

winning comedy-farce “Lend Me a Tenor”. Once again a Ludwig play is in creative and capable hands at NCRT. Set in 1953 in Buffalo, NY the play centers on George and Charlotte Hay (Arthur Hanket and Katrina Ferguson, respectively) two fading stage actors who run a theatrical touring company. They’re currently performing two plays in repertory: “Cyrano de Bergerac and “Private Lives”. Comedy/farce is best performed in lots of ‘overthe-top’ stage moments.

The more slap-stick and slamming door performances, the better. Director Weiner provides a production chock full of pratfalls, backstage shenanigans, and mistaken identities to please even the fussiest of connoisseurs of the genre.

Elisa Benzoni’s costumes enhance the visual appeal, and 2019 San Diego Critics Circle Craig Noel Awards nominated sound designer Melanie Chen Cole provides the sound. Hair & Wig Design is by Peter Herman. Fight Choreographer Benjamin Cole completes the creative team.

The impressive production “Moon Over Buffalo”, performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach,and runs through February 10, 2019.

Children’s Groups Push for CA Governor’s Budget Priorities

California are pressing state lawmakers to fully fund Gov. Gavin Newsom’s budget

requests to expand access to early learning. Newsom is proposing to expand preJanuary 18, 2019

kindergarten programs to all low-income 4-year-olds in the state within three years.

Kim Pattillo Brownson, vice president for policy and strategy at First Five LA, said other states that have put money into pre-K find that the programs show strong return on investment almost immediately.

“And they’re seeing tremendous gains both in terms of academic achievement,” she said, “but also in terms of lesser rates of special ed in the K-12 system, and a lesser incidence of children being held back.”

Pattillo Brownson said studies have shown that too many lower-income children are mistakenly placed in special education when they just haven’t had enough exposure to reading and writing. The budget also proposes $750

million for building new classrooms so more school districts have the facilities to offer full-day kindergarten.

In his budget announcement, Newsom noted that about 25 percent of all school districts in California only offer a half-day kindergarten program, which can be difficult for working parents. Pattillo Brownson said the kids need the extra hours of instruction.

“A part-day program is not sufficient to get children ready to read with our new and more advanced standards,” she said.

Newsom’s proposal also includes new money for screening children for trauma or developmental delays, and seeks to expand home visitation programs for lowincome parents with newborns.
