PSIFF’s ‘80 for Brady’

The Palm Springs International Film Festival started on January 5 with a sold-out gala. Movie stars arrived on a Red Carpet. Celebrities

were given awards, and presenters were also notable celebrities. This started a fifteen-day run of exceptional movies.

The excitement for me was the opening night film, 80 for Brady. This was

huge as six well-known celebrities came to promote the movie. First, Harry Hamline brought his wife Lisa Rinne to a roaring cry; look here, together please, and may I have a single photo as photographers

yelled at them to pose for the cameras.

The night grew even more exciting when the four actresses in the movie all came together. Jane Fonda, Lilly Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno posed in front

of the PSIFF backdrop; all four women have won Oscars for their acting. I was surprised at how beautiful they were at their age. Jane Fonda is 85, Lilly Tomlin is

Country Sensation Carly Pearce Heads to Morongo

The Kentucky-born singersongwriter, who has earned a bevy of awards since her 2017 debut, will perform with Jackson Dean and Tiera Kennedy at Morongo on Friday, January 27.

Morongo Casino Resort & Spa – Award-winning country singer-songwriter Carly Pearce will bring her blend of subtle modern pop and classic country arrangements to the Morongo Grand Ballroom on Friday, January 27.

Jackson Dean and Tiera Kennedy will join Pearce for the K-FROG concert hosted by Morongo.

Known for her earthy, powerful vocals, Pearce is

a three-time Country Music Association Award winner and a four-time Academy of Country Music Award winner. She also received a CMT Music Award and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 2021.

Pearce has been making music since she was a kid, performing bluegrass tunes at 11 and leaving her native Kentucky at just 16 to play relentlessly as a Dollywood performer. Her pensive 2017’s hit “Every Little Thing” kicked off a professional career that included the devastating “If My Name Was Whiskey” and the platinum-certified duet “I Hope You’re Happy Now” with Lee Brice.

“Carly Pearce mixes amazingly vocals with a little sass and steel guitar, just like the performers who inspired her - Dolly Parton, The Chicks, and Reba McEntire,” said Simon Farmer, Morongo’s Executive Director of Marketing. “With over 1 billion streams and 3.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify, she has quickly taken over the Country music scene.”

Tickets are on sale for $50 via Ticketmaster. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. All ages are welcome at the show; minors must be accompanied by an adult. For information, visit morongocasinoresort.com.

With the arrival of 2023 have come announcements about a number of just-released advance singles as well as forthcoming new full-length titles set for the early part of the year. Here is a roundup of notable new music releases.

Legendary singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel is back with a new song “Panopticom (Bright Side Mix),” the first track from a forthcoming album titled i/o — the LP will mark the artist’s first set of wholly new material since his September 2002 album Up.

The song recalls Gabriel’s groundbreaking and luxurious recordings of the 1980s as well as material from Danny Elfman’s most recent album Big Mess. It is a bewitching and impressive listen.

As noted in a news release, Gabriel worked with longtime collaborators bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes and drummer Manu Katché, as well as producer-musician Brian Eno. Gabriel noted

that he will release a new selection with each full moon.

“Some of what I’m writing about this time is the idea that we seem incredibly capable of destroying the planet that gave us birth and that unless we find ways to reconnect ourselves to nature and to te natural world we are going to lose a lot,” Gabriel explained in the release. “A simple way of thinking about where we fit in to all of this is looking up at the sky...and the moon has always drawn me to it.”

Supersuckers guitarist Metal Marty is set to release the tongue-in-cheek titled Metal Marty’s Greatest Hits on Feb. 3, 2023 via Acetate Records.

The album will feature 10 songs, and the 35-minute disc will provide listeners with a sonic tour of Magic City, Idaho, an “unusual lakeside resort town with a penchant for partying and no shortage of odd characters.”

“It’s quite a place if ya got

grit, which we have in spades,” notes Marty “Metal Marty” Chandler. Indeed, the artist is a resident of Magic City, a small Idaho community. “I think it sounds like a greatest hits record. There’s every kind of song on it, yet it still flows. And it’s a ridiculous title for a first record.” Information: Supersuckers.com.

Omnivore Recordings has just announced the forthcoming release of The Vogues At Co & Ce — The Complete Singles and More. The collection — set for release on Feb. 24 — will mark the first ever collection of the vocal group’s A and B sides from Co & Ce Records.

Formed while they were in high school as The Val-Aires in 1958, Bill Burkette, Don Miller, Hugh Geyer and Chuck Blasko recorded their first single on a local label. After high school, the members joined the military service or went to college, eventually joining forces again to record, this time as The Vogues.

Now here for the first time, the A- and B-sides to all eight original Vogues singles from 1965–1967 have been collected on The Vogues At Co & Ce – The Complete Singles And More. This compilation marks the CD and Digital debut of material that has been unavailable for nearly 60 years. In addition to those singles, the set also includes seven tracks from 1996’s outof- print You’re The One: The Best Of The Vogues (The Co & Ce Sessions), featuring songs written by P.F. Sloan/Steve Barri, Roger Christian/Barry Mann/ Cynthia Weill, and Don & Dick Addrisi. Produced for Release by Grammy® winner Lee Lodyga and Cary E. Mansfield, with restoration and mastering from Grammy® winning engineer Michael Graves, the set also contains new liner notes from Scott Schinder, which have been approved by both remaining original members of the band, Hugh Geyer and

Public Image Ltd. (PiL) is back with a wonderful new track, “Hawaii,” which is truly legendary band leader John Lydon’s most affecting original in memory. According to a media release, the song “is a love letter to John’s wife of nearly five decades, Nora, who is living with Alzheimer’s. A pensive, personal yet universal love song that will resonate with many, the song sees John reflecting on their lifetime well spent, and in particular, one of their happiest moments together in Hawaii.”

Indeed, known for his groundbreaking hard-edged approach with the Sex Pistols, along with PiL, the emotional ballad is a strong departure for Lydon.

“It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most,” says Lydon via the media release. “It’s also a message of hope that ultimately love conquers all.”

PiL are confirmed to take part in the competition to represent Ireland at the 67th annual Eurovision Song Contest with “Hawaii.” . The competition will take place at 9:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. Pacific Time) on Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 on Ireland’s “The Late Late Show.”

First grader (6) shoots a teacher in a school

In the U.S. state of Virginia, a six-year-old child shot and critically injured his teacher. The two had been arguing in a classroom on Friday afternoon when the elementary school child pulled the gun and pulled the trigger.

The incident happened at Richneck Elementary School in the small town of Newport News (population 185,000), an elementary school with about 550 children. U.S. authorities did not say whether the child was a boy or a girl. Little is known about the victim, either. According to police, it is a woman in her thirties.

According to the report,

the two were alone in the room when the trigger was pulled. Police Chief Steve Drew told WTKR that the other children were escorted into the gym by teachers after firing the shot. The sixyear-old child was taken into custody by police officers. Drew also confirmed that the incident was not an accident. Life-threatening injuries

“The most important thing now is that the children are safe,” Drew told U.S. reporters. And on the teacher’s condition, “Her injuries are still considered life-threatening, but the latest update we’ve received is that things have improved somewhat.”

An investigation is now underway to determine how the child could obtain the weapon. School shootings and rampages occur time and again in the United States. Not infrequently, children also become perpetrators: only in November, a ten-year-old shot his mother (44) when she did not want to buy him

expensive technology.

Critics have protested for years against the lax gun laws in large parts of the USA. Tragically, Richneck

Elementary School has metal detectors, but they are only activated on certain days. So now the security concept is to be revised.

It is unclear when normality will return to the shaken school. Classes on Monday are canceled.

According to the latest Census Bureau figures, a record number of women will serve in the next Congress. This means 73 women are expected to represent the country in the coming years. These women include women of color, State legislators, and Democratic women.

Black women: If you want to know the number of Black women serving in the 118th Congress, then you’ve come to the right place. This year’s upcoming Congress features a recordbreaking 149 women.

In addition, the 118th Congress will feature some new faces. For instance, there will be at least one

Native American, Muslim, and openly LGBT lawmaker.

There will also be a significant increase in Latinas in the 118th Congress. While not the most significant percentage of all lawmakers, these new faces will undoubtedly increase the overall diversity of the chamber.

The 118th Congress will also feature a record number of Republicans. Of the 41 new seats in the House, at least 33 will be held by Republicans. Among them are three Latinas.

These numbers generally parallel the broader expansion of women’s roles in society. But they remain below the overall population of U.S. residents.

Women’s numbers slowed during World War II and then plateaued. After the war, their numbers rebounded. However, until the mid1980s, they were largely absent from the Senate.

Democratic women of color: Women are becoming more visible in politics. Increasing numbers of women are running for office and winning elections. In 2020, 118 women were elected to the House. Many serve as leaders in the Democratic caucus.

The 118th Congress will include a record number of women. It will also have the most Latinas, the highest number of Black women, and

the first Gen-Z lawmaker. There were more women in the incoming freshman class of 22 House Democrats than at any other time since the Watergate era. Their backgrounds range from law and medicine to national security. They have also become leaders in their communities.

Some of the newest and youngest women to be elected include Rep. Sharice Davids, the first Native American woman to serve in the House. She was selected as the new chief deputy whip.

State

legislators:

Among the 82 new members of Congress set to take the oath of office on Tuesday are 13 women of color. These are part of an increasing number of states across the country recognizing the value of women in leadership positions.

A record number of women will serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and state legislatures in 2023. This includes the youngest member of the 118th Congress, Maxwell Frost.

Earlier this year, all five female senators in the Senate sought reelection in their midterm cycle. While most of them were re-elected, 59 races were too close to call.

The 118th U.S. Congress will include a record number of women in the Senate and the House. These

THE DAYS AHEAD, MARS & MERCURY DIRECT, GANESH, REMOVER OF OBSTACLES

It’s several weeks since Christmas, almost a month since Winter Solstice, when the new light began. Each morning, we have increments of more and more light. The Sun is now on its way northward and right on schedule. Biblically and historically at this time Joseph, Mary and the child, following the instructions of the Angel, are on their way to Egypt in order to protect the holy child from Herod’s dictum of killing all male children. The Holy Family remains in Egypt for protection.

What is this time after Christmas season? For some, Christmas lasts till February 2, Candlemas day. The Bible says on that day the prophesied child was baptized & Mary entered into a purification (mikva) process after giving birth. So for some the Christmas tree is still in our homes & lit each evening. So now what is to come in the days ahead?

After Hanukkah, Christmas & the sign of Capricorn, we have Aquarius, Chinese New Year, Candlemas and Valentine’s day. Then Sun in Pisces, Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Lent. Then Aries begins and the Three Spring Festivals (Aries, Taurus, Gemini), including Wesak (preparations began with the NGWS and the Hierarchy at Winter Solstice). In the meantime we have retrograde planets (Mars & Mercury) beginning to move forward, the monthly new & full moon festivals, & all of life and livingness in between.

As the new year began, we had three retrograde planets – Mercury, Mars and Uranus. Until Mercury and Mars are direct, we can feel the new

RISA’S STARS

year hasn’t really begun. On January 12, Mars, retrograde in Gemini since October 30, turns direct. And on January 18, Mercury, retrograde since December 29, also turns direct. Mars is our energy and Mercury is our communication. Both have been internal for weeks and months. As Mars and Mercury move forward, we will have more energy, be more active, information comes out of the shadows. It has felt like a long drawn out weeks, months (actually several years) of obstacles, hindrances, impediments, barriers, and obstructions. We call upon the Lord Ganesh, God of the People, to eliminate all the barriers and hindrances. Ganesh is the wise god of new beginnings.

ARIES: Try and try again with all projects and endeavors. Keep trying. However, don’t expect everything to come to fruition until at least the end of January. Some things don’t manifest ‘til March and April. You can have many trial runs, planning and perfecting activities concerning health and well-being. Creativity will be inner focused and not outwardly seen. Recite mantrams, maintain kindness, optimism and a daily rhythm attuned to the Sun.

TAURUS: Everything will be about health. And about the correct foundations being stabilized. One must have patience too. This is an asset. All things may need redoing if at first the work is not completed with the needed harmony and balance. Think about spring now, building a greenhouse both large and small. Give yourself and others working with

you more than ample time for rest and gratitude.

GEMINI: Life itself, everyday communication, the mail, correspondence, messages, even people – all could seem a bit confused and disorganized and this leads to misunderstanding until you remember the retrogrades (Mars, Mercury, direct soon). What you must do is small tasks, undemanding and repetitive things including repeating information over and over. You will find your way through these interesting obstructions. You’re clever, a wizard, a trickster, a shaman in disguise.

CANCER: As the retrogrades shift and turn to direct motion, consider the many different projects you would like to participate in, get to know, encounter. Don’t think of just one. Attempt also to not waste time, which is something that could be occurring. Follow up on every endeavor with interest, curiosity, care and your best effort. Monetarily make no changes but when the planets turn direct, do tithe to those in need.

LEO: Remember that the energies have been quite internal and they remain so for a while and so adjustments will have to be made in terms of how other people’s responses and communications are interpreted. Remember to greet everyone with kindness, care and patience. Careful with fire and sharp tools and injuries to your head, hands and face. Don’t push the river, any person or event. Plans come and go. Be the tortoise not the hare. Trim your hair.

VIRGO: Many Virgos have been in contemplation and maybe in retreat and solitude, delving into their subconscious, tending to their inner lives, whether consciously or unconsciously. A study of astrology is a good plan for the new year. When studying astrology one studies archetypes and symbols and this bring an entirely new and different understanding to religion, spirituality and one’s real place in the world.

LIBRA: As the retrogrades happened these past weeks, the world slowed way down and the holidays were different and there was disappointment that things were not as usual. Some felt sad and impatient. Now that the energy is shifting its time for new gatherings, parties and pastimes that dislodge the prevailing blues. Libras are the best implementers of get-togthers, creating abundance, pleasures, happiness and beauty all around for everyone to share.

SCORPIO: In learning about ourselves, especially with Jupiter now in Aries, it’s good to study the lives of those you look up to and admire, those you would mentor, and those whose success reflects your aspirations for success. What we admire is already within us. So recognition is key. Always consider serving others. This takes the focus away from competition, survival, losing or winning. This is a time (year) of redirecting your creative ideals.

SAGITTARIUS: Everyone is on the Path of Hercules, in one or more of the labors. It is possible you may discover the Path this year, devoting yourself to

both its trials and triumphs. On the Path you will be called to have courage, wisdom and determination. Mars retro is the inner arrow in the bow of the Archer. Soon you will release that arrow, directing it toward the Capricorn mountaintop, the place of Initiation. Beforehand you will be tested greatly. Stay the course.

CAPRICORN: You have been service to others the past six months. It was unexpected and has taken much of your time. It has created an inner strength, hardiness and flexibility. You rose up phoenix-like meeting all the challenges. At the beginning of this new year, look to yourself. Renew, reawaken, revive, relight and rekindle your deeply held hopes wishes and desire. This will sustain you and set a new foundation for years to come.

AQUARIUS: Be grateful and generous with everyone especially with loved ones. Ask nothing in return. But do ask for what you need. Everyone wants to help but they need to know the needs in order to respond. Working together in close association creates strong bonds that assists everyone in rising above possible frustrations. Realize that success is linked to having goals, visualizations, compromise and bringing forth goodwill. You are a mentor to everyone.

PISCES: It is important, for your well-being, that you create and maintain a regular daily schedule. Tend to work early and do not change anything too quickly. Everything’s transforming itself, realigning to new inner and outer realities all over the world. Think of everything as an experiment, which it is. It’s stated in Ancient Wisdom texts that when one is in an Initiation they feel alone. However, know there are angels all around. Stay poised in this angelic atmosphere. Follow the movements of the stars, moon and Sun.

HOA Managers’ New Year’s Resolutions

[After previous columns proposing resolutions for directors and HOA members, here are ideas for managers. Next week - service providers]

As a community association manager, I resolve to:

NUMBER ONE:

1. Follow the Golden Rule. (“Treat others as you would like to be treated.”)

ATTITUDE CHECK:

2. Remember I am a professional. I will give the board the best advice I can. I am not employed to be silent.

3. Strive to give the board the answers and recommendations it needs to hear, not just the input the board hopes for.

4. Avoid reacting defensively to upset homeowners. I will try to provide the “why,” and not only the

“what” regarding HOA rules. 5. Try my best to please all, while knowing that I can’t.

BE KNOWLEDGEABLE:

6. Pursue professional designations with CAI and/or CACM and attend seminars to keep me up to date. 7. Be prepared at any board meeting to explain significant deviations from budget or unbudgeted expenses. 8. Confirm in writing my advice to the board if it disregards my advice. 9. Avoid giving specialized advice and will refer the board to the appropriate specialized professional service provider.

10. Help the Board follow the Business Judgment Rule, providing the board sufficient information to make each decision.

11. Encourage directors to join the local Community Associations Institute Chapter, knowing educated boards are better boards.

BETTER BOARD MEETINGS:

12. Protect the board from overly long or disorganized meetings.

13. Create agendas with consent calendars to quickly handle non-controversial items.

14. Alert the board when a proposed agenda becomes too ambitious.

15. Become comfortable with parliamentary procedure fundamentals.

16. Help the board stay on agenda and on topic.

17. Alert the board if it is handling matters in closed session that should be discussed in open session.

18. Bring the HOA governing documents to every meeting.

19. Be prepared to provide a recommended action or recommend hiring the appropriate specialized expertise on each agenda item.

20. Listen respectfully when homeowners in open forum criticize my work.

COMMUNITY BUILDING

21. Strive toward increasing meaningful and frequent

membership communication.

22. Focus on the association’s community needs as well as its financial, maintenance, and legal concerns while I advise the board and execute its instructions and policies.

ETHICS

23. Treat all members the same, regardless of how they treat me.

24. Communicate to the entire board when answering a director’s question or giving a report.

25. Remember my client is the HOA, not its board or president.

26. Not take sides in board elections or recalls, and not assist or advocate for or against any candidate. My personal opinions on those matters will remain secret.

27. Reject vendor offers of kickbacks, gratuities, or commissions and promptly disclose such offers to the board.

28. Not give my employer (or its related company)

any

advantage in bidding

on HOA contracts.

VENDORS

29. Advise the board when specialized expertise is needed on specific issues or projects.

30. Provide the board with two or three candidate service providers to consider, not only one favorite vendor.

31. Suggest the appropriate consultant before the board evaluates major or complicated bids to help them select the best and most complete proposal.

32. Recommend the best bid, not simply the cheapest.

LAST:

33. Follow the Golden Rule.

The fight over CA Black Bear Hunt Heats Up This Week

By Desert Star Staff

A controversial proposal to let individual hunters kill two bears per season instead of one is on the agenda at a meeting of the California Fish and Game Commission’s Wildlife Resources Committee tomorrow and Thursday. The state allows hunters as a group to kill 1,700 hundred black bears per year, and 1,300 were taken in 2022.

Judie Mancuso, founder and president of the group Social Compassion in Legislation opposes hunting.

“From an ethical and moral standpoint, we absolutely shouldn’t be hunting bears,” Mancuso said. “This is purely a trophy

sport. It’s not about being overrun with bears.”

Both conservationists and the pro-hunting advocacy group Howl for Wildlife are rallying members to weigh in at the meeting. Hunters have submitted a petition to authorize a second bear tag for the Fall hunt and to allow labels to be resold if they are not used within the season. It starts in August with two weeks of archery hunting and then transitions to rifle hunting through late December.

The Wildlife committee will also take comment on the development of a new bear management plan, which was last updated in 1998. Mancuso wants the

hunt to be stopped until the new bear-management plan is approved.

“We don’t want to be killing any bears because this management plan hasn’t been completed,” she said. “And the department has no idea how many bears we even have in the state. “

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s 2020 bear take report estimated the population to be about 15,000 animals in the official hunting grounds. And bear tags are big business.

In 2020, California sold 30,000 tags and raised more than $ 1.5 million for wildlife management and conservation.

have been increasingly more Democratic.

The gender gap between Republicans and Democrats

A gender gap exists between Democrats and Republicans. This is a result of how people align their political parties with gender. Historically, male voters have been more inclined toward the Republican Party. However, women

Since 1980, when Ronald Reagan beat Jimmy Carter in the presidential election, women have been more likely to vote for Democrats. But the gender gap is not the only factor that has changed the electoral landscape. Research has also looked at the realignments of regional political parties.

The partisan gender gap is the most significant and pronounced among Democrats and independents. It is the product of long-term structural changes in the electoral environment.

In addition to the partisan gender gap, there

are major variations in party identification within various racial and ethnic groups.

For instance, while men are more likely than women to identify as Republicans,

Asians and African Americans are more likely to identify as Democrats.

Paintings by Jim Egan” Opens at Artists Center in Palm Desert

Jim Egan, a local artist with an international flair, can capture the personality and charisma of international celebrities, from Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe to local desert personalities, as in this case, Phyllis Eisenberg. This all came together on January 8 at the opening of Mr. Egan’s fascinating exhibit, “ICONS: Paintings by Jim Egan,” at the Artists Center at The Galen in Palm Desert.

This exhibit, comprised of 63 oil and acrylic paintings, reveals more about the personality of familiar faces than expected. The images are nostalgic and historical in context and open the door to the new genre of

“personalized portraiture.” Many of the portraits are of luminaries such as Lucille Ball, Gavin McLeod, and Elvis Presley with links to the desert, which made Mr. Egan’s visual interpretation of these personalities for the Collection even more fascinating.

The artist’s career in the oil industry had him traveling around the world, adding to his unique style of capturing the personality and flair of classic characters and his own heroes, as diverse as Queen Elizabeth II to Tom Hanks posing as Forest Gump.

As a painter, Jim Egan noted that after a ‘decade of doodling,’ he decided to delve into painting, creating

an exhibit comprised of personalities from Albert Einstein to “Phyllis and Mel.” The ICONS exhibition honors the people Egan admires the most, from famous entertainers, scientists, and athletes to respected philanthropists, doctors, and friends from the Coachella Valley.

Either by a plan accidental or intentional, the artist created a genre of art unique to Greater Palm Springs. The exhibit at The Artists Center at the Galen in Palm Desert is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10AM to 4PM and closes on January 22. Admission is free. PALM SPRINGS, CA

– Modernism Week, the annual festival highlighting midcentury modern architecture, art, interior, landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California, will offer exclusive tours of stunning architecture and provide opportunities for design professionals to earn learning unit credits. The 11-day event runs February 16-26, 2023, and offers more than 350 programs. Tickets may be purchased at modernismweek.com, and a portion of ticket proceeds benefit Modernism Week (a non-profit organization) and other local preservation, neighborhood, and community groups.

Some of the newly added events include:

Exclusive Tour of the Kellogg Doolittle House in Joshua Tree (2/20, $1,000; tour goes from 10 am – 3 pm)

Modernism Week is honored to offer an exclusive tour of the Kellogg Doolittle High Desert House in

Joshua Tree, one of the most intriguing and upscale residential properties ever built in Southern California. This private residence, designed by Ken Kellogg, is admired worldwide for its awe-inspiring organic details but is rarely open to guests. This Modernism Week tour is one of the first groups to experience the home’s interior rooms and tour it with the homeowner and the craftsman who has worked on it for more than 25 years. This unique tour is limited to only 20 guests and is exclusive to Modernism Week 2023.

The tour ticket includes registration for one person, roundtrip VIP motor coach transportation to and from Palm Springs, a gourmet boxed lunch, and a guided tour of the property with the homeowner, craftsman John Vugrin, and CEO of Modernism Week Lisa Vossler Smith. Purchase of this exclusive tour helps support Modernism Week’s ongoing educational and scholarship programs. In addition, $500 of

the ticket price is taxdeductible. Unfortunately, interior photography will not be permitted.

House of Tomorrow Home Tour (2/16 – 2/21, $55 for tour, $100 for time and reception)

Exclusive to Modernism Week, tours will be available for the newly renovated Alexander Estate, known as the House of Tomorrow and popularly as the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway, where Elvis and Priscilla Presley honeymooned in 1967. Located in the historic Vista Las Palmas neighborhood, this extraordinary home was built in 1960 by architect William Krisel for Helene and Robert Alexander of the Alexander Construction Company. The architect designed a series of four interconnected circular pods, embodying Krisel’s view that “circles have no edge – you can approach them from anywhere.” In addition, many original and dramatic features have been restored, including the terrazzo floors, windows, ceiling-mounted fireplaces,

and the custom circular sofa in the living room. A twilight tour and cocktail reception for a limited number of guests at House of Tomorrow will be available each day at 4:30 pm. This tour is for ages 21 and older.

Festive Celebration of Permanent Nighttime Lighting of Palm Springs Visitor Center (2/16, accessible). Since 2012 Modernism Week has dramatically lit the glorious Palm Springs Visitor Center as part of its annual lighting of many important modern buildings. Its success inspired the Palm Springs

Modern Committee to secure funding to permanently light Albert Frey’s modern sculptural masterpiece. In late 2022, a combination of Measure J funds and PS ModCom contributions achieved this ambitious goal. At this special occasion, Palm Springs Mayor Grace Garner, the Palm Springs Modern Committee Board of Directors, and Modernism Week’s Board of Directors Chairman, William Kopelk, will be present for this exciting official lighting ceremony. The event is free, and no tickets are required.

Palm Springs, CA –– Walk of the Stars Palm Springs honored former President/ Executive Director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Craig Prater, with the 454th Star on the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs.

Prater began working with former Palm Springs Mayor and U.S. Congressman Sonny Bono as the executive director of the internationally renowned film festival in 1993. Founded in 1990, 33 years later, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is ranked among the world’s best film festivals and a successful predictor of Academy Award honors.

During his tenure as festival director from 1993-2000, Prater had worked with city officials and Walk of Stars founder, Gerard Frenzel, to secure placements of stars for a list of

high-profile film stars. Including Sophia Loren, Mickey Rooney, Debbie Reynolds, Roberto Benigni, Catherine Deneuve, and James Earl Jones.

Acknowledging this fullcircle moment, Prater stated, “After assisting the Walk of Stars board of directors for so many years, it’s humbling to be receiving a star of my own in the town that I love.”

Following his long and successful tenure at the Palm Springs film fest, Prater continued his festival career in Bangkok, Thailand, where he worked with the Royal Thai government, followed by other international events for Greek, Latino, and Jewish film festivals. He completed his film festival career after serving a 5-year term in 2021 as President/CEO at Heartland Film in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Before being tapped

by Sonny Bono to serve as Executive Director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Prater served as the Development Director of the Desert AIDS Project. During his term at DAP, he secured the international HEARTSTRINGS program as a fundraiser that featured top-ranking celebrities. He also produced the successful fundraising event featuring Dionne Warwick at the famed Elrod House, the Palm Springs film location, where a scene in the 1971 Diamonds Are Forever James Bond film was shot.

Prater recently retired and returned to Palm Springs, where he has previously resided for more than 30 years.

Since 1992, the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs has honored over 450 celebrities and local personalities on one of the world’s most famous sidewalks. Source: Pam Price

PSIFF’s ‘80 for Brady’

83, Sally Field is 76, and Rita Moreno is 91 and gorgeous, which shows age is only a number. All are still working.

These four women stood outside in the cold, talking to TV news anchors who interviewed them. Jane Fonda said she is in remission from her Cancer and doesn’t feel her age. The directors and writers also posed for the cameras. Everyone was hoping Tom Brady would show up as he is the producer of this true story. The four women held a Q and A after the film was shown. The film will be released on February 3 to theaters.

The movie is about four women who love Tom

Brady and are his fans. So they decide to liven up their lives and go to the Super Bowl, hoping to see Brady in person. Their mission took them to an eating contest hosted by Chef Guy Fieri and a dance contest with Billy Porter to get tickets. Tom Brady plays himself in the movie, and Harry Hamlin plays the part of Dan. These four women get themselves into all kinds of problems along the way.

The women loved doing this film as they are all friends. Fonda and Tomlin have made 3 movies together and had a 7-season run on TV with Grace and Frankie. Fonda has known Sally Field for 40 years and said that Rita is full of energy and never gets tired. She is

her new role model. They had so much fun making the movie that it was hard for the director to keep them focused on their parts.

Harry Hamlin said watching these four women work closely to make this film was terrific. He told People magazine there were no

words to describe it. Many of the comments were given to People Magazine interviews. I am looking forward to seeing this film in February.

A new year is a perfect time to consider the habits you want to keep and the ones you’d like to develop. This year, one resolution to consider is helping your children develop a growth mindset.

“We know one of the greatest boosts to parents’ confidence over the past year came from knowing their children’s whole selves are being nurtured, and we want to see that trend continue,” said Carter Peters from KinderCare Learning Center’s

education team. “A growth mindset helps children try new things despite fear of failure. It’s the kind of thinking that allows inventors and creative thinkers to get excited about trying something new and ensures they have the cognitive flexibility and problem-solving skills to work through hurdles.”

Adults can often easily spot when children are engaged in creative thinking and prideful of their work, but that confidence may be lost as failures turn into insecurities. Nurturing a growth mindset

and showing children they can learn and develop new skills in any area better sets them up for long-term success.

Consider these three tips to help children build a growth mindset:

Praise effort: It’s easy to fall into the habit of praising successes. However, praising effort encourages children to try new things without fearing failure. It also teaches children that personal growth and achievement are possible, even if their overall effort wasn’t successful.

“Young children often get excited to try something new,” Peters said. “By praising effort and showing children they’ll still be loved and valued despite the outcome, you can reframe how they approach challenges and teach them that difficult doesn’t mean impossible.”

Encourage the process: People often withhold praise until there’s a result, leading children to hurriedly scribble a picture to hold up for a “good job” instead of focusing on their efforts. When children know adults will encourage them during the process, instead of only upon the achievement, they’re more likely to try new things or master a new skill.

For example, try providing encouragement such as, “I can see you’re focused on drawing that tree. It looks lifelike because you’re putting so much thought into your actions.” Once their project is finished, continue the encouragement by hanging

up their artwork or school projects in a prominent place.

Model a growth mindset: You can model a growth mindset for children by narrating your actions when facing a challenge: “I am having a difficult time putting this shelf together, but it’s OK. I’ll take a break and then reread the instructions.” Remove negative words from your vocabulary, such as “I can’t” or “I’m stupid.” Children may be unable to tell the difference even when you are joking. You can also ask your children to join you in problem-solving. Take time to hear their ideas and try them even if you think they won’t work. This supports the development of their growth mindset, and the quality time and encouragement reinforce their sense of selfworth and build confidence.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

A new year is a perfect timMuch like humans, dogs and cats can struggle with aging- and weight-related health issues. In fact, 3 out of 5 cats and dogs are overweight or obese, according to Packaged Facts’ U.S. Pet Market Outlook.

Pet obesity can lead to several health issues and problems, including diabetes, cancer, and osteoarthritis, according to research published in “Veterinary Medicine.” While leading a sedentary lifestyle and overfeeding are common factors that can lead to pets becoming overweight or obese, these simple tips from the pet food experts at

Go! Solutions can help you manage your dog’s or cat’s weight to ensure he or she lives a happy and healthy life.

Exercise and Play Regularly: Just as important as your pet’s diet is ensuring he or she is active. For dogs, regular walks and hikes are a simple way to provide mental stimulation, improve muscle tone, increase metabolism and help reduce boredom while also getting necessary exercise. For high-energy dogs who need more inspiration, games like fetch, hide-andseek, and tug can help them burn off extra energy and tire more quickly on days when you don’t have time to spend hours outside with them. For cats, consider scratching posts,

flirt poles, obstacle courses, setting platforms at multiple levels, and simple toys like balls and fake mice to keep them active and engaged. Some cats can even be leash trained to go for walks.

Address Dietary Needs: Diet is a significant factor in weight management for dogs and cats. The ideal diet for your pet provides the right balance of macro- and micronutrients, including protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, as well as the proper portion size to help prevent obesity. Formulated by Petcurean’s expert nutrition team, Go! Solutions Weight Management + Joint Care Grain-Free Chicken recipe provides complete and

balanced nutrition featuring premium quality, functional ingredients with zero byproduct meals and artificial preservatives. To support a healthy weight and mobile joints in adult and senior dogs and cats, the formula includes L-carnitine to help burn fat into energy and fiber-rich psyllium husk to help keep pets feeling full. In addition, glucosamine and chondroitin in the recipe for dogs and chondroitin from chicken cartilage for cats help support healthy joints and good mobility.

An essential part of weight loss and management is limiting the additional calories you’re providing your pet outside his or her usual diet. Of course, a little extra can go a long way, so keep packaged treats to a minimum and be mindful of things like slipping your pet’s table scraps or letting him or her lick out the almost-empty peanut butter jar.

Election drama in Washington

Republican McCarthy, now elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives - Trump confidant, prevails in the 15th ballot with 216 to 211 votes.

It was a victory by the skin of its teeth! After a relentless internal party power struggle, Republican Kevin McCarthy (57) is the new Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives - it was the longest election for the so-called Speaker of the House since the 19th century.

At the end stand: 15 ballots - fourteen times his party friends let him run, fourteen times McCarthy was humiliated in public. It is the apparent legacy of the presidency of Donald Trump (76), who split the Republicans into two camps.

After the 14th electoral defeat (McCarthy was one vote short), there were even tumults in the Chamber. The mood among the Republicans: heated.

McCarthy went to the back of the Chamber and confronted Republican Matt Gaetz (40), one of his most formidable opponents.

Fingers were pointed at him, and words were exchanged.

However, fisticuffs were apparently just averted.

At one point, Republican Rep. Mike Rogers, 59, of Alabama, yelled at Gaetz before another Republican, Richard Hudson, 51, pulled him back.

Someone shouted: “Stay civilized!”.

It was only after all the humiliation, the tumult, several rounds of negotiations with the ultraconservatives, and concessions that McCarthy’s election was made.

McCarthy is now the new number three in the state rankings - behind U.S. President Joe Biden (80) and his vice president Kamala Harris (58). He succeeds Democrat Nancy Pelosi (82) in office.

The party’s internal rebellion against McCarthy paralyzed the House of Representatives for days and plunged it into chaos.

After the parliamentary elections in November, Congress met for the first time on Tuesday in a new constellation. The Republicans took control of the House of Representatives – in the Senate, President Joe Biden’s Democrats still

have a narrow majority.

The House of Representatives should have chosen a new chairperson on Tuesday. The inner-party rebellion against McCarthy, however, dramatically lengthened the process.

Usually, the election to the chair of the Chamber of Congress is a formality. But several party colleagues from the faction’s right-

wing wing rebelled against McCarthy and refused to support him. Given the narrow majority of Republicans in the Chamber, McCarthy did not manage to get enough votes on various ballots.

It was a humiliation of historic proportions for the Republicans: not since the 19th century has it taken so many attempts in the House of Representatives to choose

a new leader as this time. The last time there were more ballots was in 1859/1860. At that time, Republican William Pennington was only elected chairman of the Chamber of Congress on the 44th ballot. The process took several weeks at the time. In McCarthy’s case, the voting marathon dragged on for four days.

For many families, cars are huge, long-term investments second only to homes. Many are looking for ways to keep their cars on the road longer and make them safer to continue to serve their needs for years to come.

No matter what or where you drive, you can keep your current vehicle looking and performing its best – and even update it to make it safer – with these tips inspired by eBay Motors’ Parts of America tour, a cross-country tour exploring unique car cultures across America.

Choose the Right Tires

If it’s time to trade your tires in, take the time to learn what options are available for your vehicle. For those in fair weather states, summer performance tires offer the best possible fuel efficiency all year round. Families living in milder states with occasional snow may consider all-season tires that trade efficiency for safety on a variety of surfaces. Finally, when it comes to driving in a winter wonderland, there is no substitute for specialized rubber and tread patterns – purchase a dedicated set of snow tires to ensure you’re safe all winter long. No matter your situation, a new set of tires can maximize safety and extend the life of your car.

New Look, New Ride

One way to breathe new life into your ride is to take it to the next level aesthetically. With enthusiast communities growing around nearly every make and model of vehicle, it’s easy to find parts to make your vision a reality. One of the most eye-catching additions is a new set of wheels, and there are thousands of brands, styles and sizes to choose from for every car. The addition of front, side and rear aerodynamics kits, such as front splitters or rear spoilers, can give any ride that athletic look. Upgrading stock headlight and taillight units – many fitted with high-visibility LEDs – has never been easier.

Upgrade Your Tech

Safety and creature comforts alike can add to your enjoyment of your vehicle, even if you’ve been

driving it for several years. Many cars can be updated with the latest and greatest features available in new rides, including high-tech infotainment equipped with digital assistants, front and rear cameras, parking sensors, blind spot warning and even collision avoidance systems. As families look to extend their cars’ lifespans, these technology upgrades can make driving comfortable and safer.

Power and Performance

While looks and tech can bring new experiences to your car, no change has quite the same impact as improving its performance. Options abound for those looking to improve the power and handling of their ride, such as replacing the exhaust system, lowering springs, adding a coilover kit or conducting a full suspension replacement.

Find Purpose-Built Parts

Whether you’re an amateur DIY-er looking to maintain and make small upgrades to your vehicle

or an expert looking to make bigger modifications, finding parts and accessories that fit your vehicle is crucial. From hardto-find performance modifications to made-to-fit cosmetic accessories, eBay Motors offers parts and accessories for nearly any vehicle, skillset and project.

The app offers an entire catalog of inventory with 122 million live parts listings at any given time, giving auto enthusiasts the ability

to purchase from an expansive inventory from the convenience of a smartphone. What’s more, features like Buy It Now, My Garage and Fitment Finder enable users to easily search parts and accessories, verify the items fit their vehicle and make immediate purchases for what they need.

Skip the Wait

The global supply chain continues to recover from disruptions that have stretched back several years, and many customers are feeling the strain when it comes time to upgrade, maintain or repair their vehicles. Some shops around the country are quoting waiting times of several months just to have the right part delivered for service.

However, families can find relief and get their car back on the road quicker by looking online to source their much-needed parts.

In fact, many technicians work with customers to have parts delivered directly to their shop from online sources to expedite and simplify the process.

Auto enthusiasts can find more helpful tips, tricks and resources at ebaymotors.com.
