The lineup of stars was again tremendous. It’s hard to believe that this festival is in its 29th year. I remember it from years ago and how big it has gotten thanks to the leaders of the
Festival and its staff. The festival was going downhill until Chairman Harold Matzner, and his friends got together and made it what it is today. The Honorees are all highprofile actors and actresses and well known to all film fans. Timothee Chalamet received the Rising Star Award, and costar Armie Hammer presented it. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One night, every year, the third largest film festival in North America honors the crème de la crème of the creative arts community with awards and tributes for their work in movies during 2017. On January 2nd, Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) officially launched its 29th Annual Film Festival and Gala. More than 2400 guests, attended, along with stars, celebrities, industry professionals, screenwriters, producers, directors, and
actors to rub elbows at the Palm Springs Convention Center, as they accepted their Awards for their artistic accomplishments during 2017. Two nights later, on January 4th, 1200 festival ticket patrons along with dignitaries and celebrities, were treated to the Festival’s Opening Night Film “The Post”, directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks as The Washington Post’s executive editor Ben Bradlee, and Meryl Streep, as publisher/ owner of The Washington Post, Katherine Graham, respectively. Allison Janney was honored with the Spotlight Award and submitted by Stan Sabastian. The new Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot, was given the Rising Star Award and presented by her Director, Patty Jenkins. Singer Mary J. Blige was given the Breakthrough Award and presented by another singer/ actor, Common. Common said that going from being
a singer to an actor is not as easy as it seems. Gary Oldman was given the Desert Palm Achievement Award for an Actor and presented by another actor, Peter Fonda. Gary Oldman announced that he will now be making Palm Springs his permanent home. Saorse Ronan was given the Desert Palm Achievement Award
for an Actress and was presented by actress, Laurie Metcalf. Both Ronan and Oldman have been in the Desert for the gala before. Sam Rockwell was honored with the Spotlight Award for an actor and presented by another actor, Colin Farrell. Holly Hunter was given the Continues on Page 9
