Opening Ceremony for the Riv. County Fair & National Date Festival By Desert Star Staff Indio, CA – The Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival invites the public to join in the fun as its gates open on Friday, February 16, immediately following the 9:30 am an opening ceremony. Fairground entertainers will be onsite amusing the crowds with street fair performances including Captain Jack Spareribs, Hilby the German Juggle Boy, DinDin, Jules the physical comedian, Engine Ken with his touring train and
a possible visit by a particular animal friend visiting from the new Rainforest exhibit. Keynote speakers at the opening ceremony will include 4th District Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez; Don Casper, Vice President of Marketing, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino; Becky Broughton, Chairman, Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival Board; and Rob Field, Assistant County Executive Officer/Economic Development Agency. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Convention Center was the host venue for the 24th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Gala on January 10th. Over 1200 people filled the Center to see two extraordinary people being honored. Dr. Shubha Kerkar was honored with the 100 Women Award. Barbara Boxer was the presenter and gave a glowing tribute about this fantastic woman. Barbara said she had just renewed her 100 women dues for 2018 and was so proud to be in the company of such beautiful supporting
women. Barbara said she didn’t know how Dr. Kerkar had time to do all the things she does. She was so instrumental in the fight against HIV/AIDS and was a big part of DAP from the start. Dr. Kerkar gave such a heartwarming acceptance speech that I heard one person say it nearly brought him to tears. Both Barbara Boxer and Dr. Kerkar got a standing ovation when they came on stage. The clapping during both speeches lasted a long time and was frequent on many topics they talked about and
have the chance to enjoy a date shake toast by Queen Scheherazade, Keanna Garcia, and her royal court before everyone has an opportunity to enter the fairgrounds for just $5 thanks to Presenting Sponsor Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. The festivities will take place outside Gate 1, South of Highway 111, near Arabia Street. The first 2,000 fairgoers who enter Gate 1 on opening day will receive a free midweek return ticket.
