Over 1200 people filled the Center to see two extraordinary people being honored. Dr. Shubha Kerkar was honored with the 100 Women Award.

Barbara Boxer was the presenter and gave a glowing tribute about this fantastic woman. Barbara said she had just renewed her 100 women dues for 2018 and was so proud to be in the company of such beautiful supporting

women. Barbara said she didn’t know how Dr. Kerkar had time to do all the things she does.

She was so instrumental in the fight against HIV/AIDS and was a big part of DAP from the start.

Dr. Kerkar gave such a heartwarming acceptance speech that I heard one person say it nearly brought him to tears. Both Barbara Boxer and Dr. Kerkar got a standing ovation when they came on stage. The clapping during both speeches lasted a long time and was frequent on many topics they talked about and

have the chance to enjoy a date shake toast by Queen Scheherazade, Keanna Garcia, and her royal court before everyone has an opportunity to enter the fairgrounds for just $5 thanks to Presenting Sponsor Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

was a party exclusively for Donors, Sponsors, Award Recipients and supporters of Desert AIDS Project, DAP. Guests arrived in beacons of light going into the sky.

Entertainment was provided by D J BAZ, and there were several bar stations for refreshments. Waiters wandered around with trays of food like Mac and Cheese, Meatballs and more. There was a huge banner that flashed across the top of the building and another on the opposite wall that made it such a festive occasion.

Guests mingled and greeted

each other as old friends do.

This party is a way to say thank you to so many that supported DAP over the years.

DAP could not function like it does without the help of so many in the Desert. Their contributions, dedication, hard work, volunteerism, and love have made it into the national entity for AIDS-related illnesses and their families. DAP is a model for other programs to follow. These VIPs were shown the love they deserve for all their support to DAP.

Dr. Kerkar said it had been a long time since she had to sign a Death Certificate regarding a patient with AIDS. That brought the loudest applause.

The second honoree was Tony Marchese who was given the Partners for Life Award.

Producing Sponsor Harold Matzner was the presenter. He spoke about the work Tony has done in the Desert. Matzner said that Tony’s Restaurants in the Desert had been the highest-grossing donors for the Dining Out For Life Event.

This event is now a National event. Tony spoke about all

the people that have made such an impact in his life.

He said there were so many mentors that have made him who he is today. Tony said that everyone has the opportunity to help in some way or another.

It always doesn’t have to be money but that is important, but they need volunteers like all those in the room. Everyone has something to give to show the love that is necessary.

CEO of DAP, David Brinkman, spoke about all the exciting news coming up for DAP. He brought all the honorees, Major Donors and board members on stage to ask for a standing ovation. He gave the microphone to Kyle Mudd and Louis Smith who were part of DAP over 30 years

ago and have come back to help. They announced they would donate 3 million dollars to DAP. In just a few years DAP has almost doubled the number of clients they serve. They now serve nearly 4500 people, and the statistics are staggering for those that need help in our Valley. They hope to be able to serve 10,000 by 2020 with the new buildings and services they are providing now to everyone, not only those affected by HIV/AIDS. The gala raised millions of dollars for DAP and the more people they help, the more money is needed.

The typical for-profit president is hired to be the boss, and can hire and fire, create or terminate contracts, and otherwise run the show. On the other hand, the HOA’s boss is not

the president, but its board of directors. Corporations Code 7210 confirms the chain of command in the common interest development – “the activities and affairs of a [non-profit mutual benefit] corporation shall be conducted and all corporate powers shall be exercised by or under the direction of the board.” In a for-profit corporation, the day to day running of the business is typically the responsibility of the president, along with hiring and firing staff. In most associations, day to day execution of board decisions is executed by the association’s paid professional manager.

The association president has just one vote on the board, and that vote is no more valuable than any other director. Directors who always automatically defer to the president are not fulfilling their responsibility to the association

– which needs each director to contribute. A “super-director” does not exist in the HOA world – each director is just as important as the others.

HOA presidents often feel that it is their responsibility to instruct the HOA’s manager, employees, or vendors on how they should perform their jobs. However, in doing so without express authority from the board, such presidents violate the role and disrespect their board colleagues since the group is the legal authority.

Furthermore, most associations with professional managers pay the manager to handle vendors and HOA employees. Such a president will often experience burnout and frustration due to all the extra time they put in the job (unnecessarily, if the HOA has a manager) and worse yet, can be exposed to liability because they are actually not acting as a director

any more, but become a manager or co-manager.

HOA presidents in associations without managers often take on much of the management function, but this still should involve express board authorization. However, presidents of professionally managed associations should not need to be involved in day to day association business.

Good presidents understand the boundaries between board work and management work. Good presidents do not confuse their self-worth with their position as an officer, and are team leaders not dictators. A good president helps the team (the board) stay focused on the decisions at hand, moving deliberations along smoothly and efficiently, but also graciously, fairly, and respectfully. A good president models respect for all directors, even those who disagree,

The long-term care question is the big risk factor in many retirees’ plan. Prices have increased significantly for those who purchased LTC plans, thus factoring this into your project is essential.

To achieve balance in your retirement plan, and your cash flow needs, it is essential to change your style of investing from “Performancebased” concepts to “Goal orientated” investing. Shifting your plan to focus less on performance and more on fitting your future needs will help secure your goals.

Risk tolerance is an important issue in retirement. If you know that you’re a retiree

who freaked out in 2008 when your stock portfolio went down, or if you have gotten uncomfortable by volatility in your equity portfolio or have sold equities at the bottom, you probably want to tilt toward a more conservative position.

The asset allocation that someone arrives at depends heavily on other, nonportfolio, sources of income in retirement, such as pensions.

A stronger need for cash-flow or someone is actively tapping their portfolio and relying heavily on those withdrawals plus Social Security to supply living expenses; you would probably want to have a more traditional collection, whereas someone taking very modest amounts from the portfolio annually would be able to support a higher stock weighting.

For those who are in a better cash-flow position, You may consider taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) to improve your portfolio positions and defer taxation. At the end of the year, look at the problem spots in your portfolio such as positions that are too large or risky or changes in the investment which may signal that you need to make a difference and include more diversification. In retirement, it is important to simplify and not get too fancy with tactical allocations. A well-diversified portfolio should match your anticipated cash-flow needs.

Many retirees in an

excellent cash-flow position also want to leave a legacy.

If you’re older than 70-1/2, by using required minimum distributions (RMDs), and by gifting them to a charity (up to $100,000), you gain the benefit of not having a change to your adjusted gross income. The key is to make a direct transfer without having it go through your hands.

I always advise retirees to think about being flexible about where they go for cash-flow needs and not get hung up on what their portfolio yields. I use

Appalachia Steps Up Effort to Make Clean Break from Coal

By Desert Star Staff CLINTON, Tenn. – At one point, roughly half of the counties in Tennessee were supported by the coal industry in some way. As the fossil fuel industry declines, efforts to secure new industries are increasing in parts of the state.

For more than two years, the Appalachian Regional Commission – a federal and state partnership – has invested $94 million in communities from New York to Mississippi that once were supported in some way by the coal industry.

Wendy Wasserman, the commission’s communications director, says helping these counties reinvent themselves is easier said than done.

“If you’re coming from a multi-generational family that has a long heritage stake in a certain industry and you’re told all of a sudden that you have to do something different,” she says, “that takes a lot of hard work both with yourself

and with your community to overcome. So, it’s not as simple as flipping a switch.”

A report released in late January confirms what the commission and other economic groups have suspected – that the declining coal industry will have impacts on communities beyond those specifically involved in mining.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, while coal had been declining in recent years, last year, during Donald Trump’s first year as president, coal production was 12 percent higher than during the same period in 2016.

This week, the commission is requesting proposals from private businesses with services that might help coal communities in areas such as workforce training, broadband expansion and business development.

It’s part of the POWER (Partnerships for Opportunity

and Workforce and Economic Revitalization) Initiative.

Wasserman says after two years of the effort, they’re seeing what’s working in the communities.

She says, “The industries that we’re really seeing take off with great interest: Manufacturing is one of them, local food is another one, entrepreneurship – lots of clever folks who are either starting their own small business or trying to figure out how to bring that entrepreneurial skill to life.”

There is currently $20 million available for the program. So far, POWER Initiative investments have created or regained almost 9,000 jobs and leveraged an additional $210 million in investment.

Tennessee counties Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Cumberland, Fentress, Marion and Scott are listed by the commission as heavily dependent on coal.

Groups Fight Proposals to Water Down DEQ

By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. – Some state lawmakers want to shift control of environmental rules from the Department

of Environmental Quality to state appointed boards, a move environmentalist say would put the fox in charge of the henhouse.

Senate Bill 652 would create an 11-member committee, mostly from industry groups like manufacturing, small

business, oil and gas, and agriculture, to oversee all DEQ rule making. And SB 653 would form another board with the ability to modify or reverse DEQ decisions.

Peggy Case, president of Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation, says there’s a very good reason those industries are regulated by the state.

“It’s the state’s responsibility to protect us, to protect our air, and our land and our water,” says Case.

“To do just the opposite – and turn it over to the people who have been, for years, polluting it – is a constitutional violation, as far as I’m concerned.”

A bill sponsor, Sen. Tom Casperson, R-38th District, says the purpose is to counteract what he describes as “unreasonable views and agency overreach” in denying permits. However according to a scorecard assembled

Report: Calif. Could Do More to Help Its People Prosper

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Golden State is generating jobs that pay well, but has one of the lowest home ownership rates in the country, according to a new report.

The 16th annual “Prosperity Now Scorecard” shows California slipped slightly – from 26th in the nation to 27th – as ranked by 58 measures of prosperity and 63 policies that could help people improve their prosperity.

The report says skyhigh housing costs affect minority communities most, with 65 percent of California’s African-American renters and 60 percent of Latino renters spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing.

Study co-author Solana Rice, director of state and local policy for Prosperity Now,

suggests the state should pass a law to prevent landlords from refusing to take renters who rely on Section 8 housing vouchers.

“So, we call that source-ofincome discrimination, and right now, California allows that,” she explains. “And so, we really recommend that the state look into protecting renters from that kind of discrimination.”

Only 53 percent of Californians own homes – the third-lowest rate in the nation, the report says.

On other measures, the state fares better.

Unemployment is at a record low, and California is 10th in the nation for having the lowest rate of low-wage jobs, an improvement from 18th last year.

Rice notes the Trump administration and Congress have dealt several major

blows to low-income people in the last year.

She maintains the vote to repeal the individual health insurance mandate will prompt many healthy people to opt out of the system. She warns that would drive up insurance prices, putting coverage out of reach for low-income families.

“We expect many, many to lose health care coverage because of that – about 9 million people over the next decade, nationwide,” she states. “And that also affects budgets eventually, so every state will be impacted.”

Rice adds the new tax overhaul, in the long term, amounts to a major redistribution of wealth from low and middle-income families to the top 1 percent of taxpayers, and to corporations.

“With the increase in influenza impacting many communities across the entire state, it is important to get a flu shot now if you have not done so already,” said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. “Although influenza season usually peaks between December and February, flu activity can occur as late as May, which means it is not too late to get vaccinated.”

For those at high risk of serious flu complications, getting vaccinated is especially important. It is also important for caregivers of anyone at high risk including children younger than 6 months, who are too young to get a flu vaccine.

Individuals in a highrisk group that experience symptoms of flu (fever, chills and feeling very tired accompanied by sore throat, muscle or body aches, headaches, or nasal congestion), should contact their health care provider early in the illness. Antiviral drugs can be prescribed by a physician, and work best if started within two days of getting sick.

Can Silicon Valley Help Save the National Parks?

By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO – This weekend, Silicon Valley is harnessing its brainpower to help devise solutions to the $11.3 billion backlog in deferred maintenance facing America’s national parks and monuments.

The Pew Charitable Trusts, along with the group CivicMakers, is hosting the ”Parks and Tech Challenge” at Fort Mason in San Francisco. Marcia Argust, director of Pew’s “Restore America’s Parks” campaign, says the event brings together technology experts, designers, sustainability specialists and park experts to ‘think outside the box.’

“What we’re looking for is thoughts that would provide cost savings to the Park Service,” says Argust, “as well as ideas that might come up with ways to generate revenue.”

She says the group will try to find energy savings, consider new materials that might have longer life cycles, or come up with ways to harness data so that park managers can catch repairs sooner, before they become more expensive to fix.

Argust notes that the parks are entering their second century, so much of the infrastructure is aging. That includes water and sewer systems, historic buildings, bridges, tunnels and more.

“Half of the backlog is attributed to roads. The Park Service maintains over 12,500 roads,” she says. “They are also responsible for over 28,000 buildings; and they also have over 18,000 miles of trails.”

Huge Marijuana Growing Facility in Cathedral City Now Under Construction

KMIR Vince Marino Cathedral City, CA - A marijuana growing facility in Cathedral City is starting to take shape and when the project is completed it is set to be the second largest marijuana growing facility in the state.

The company behind the huge greenhouse is

called Sunniva, a North American provider of medical cannabis and services. Chief Operating Officer Duncan Gordon says it isn’t your average grow operation.

“What we have here is three hundred and seventy five thousand square feet dutch style venlogreenhouse,

which is arguably that Cadillac of greenhouses around the world,” Gordon said.

The high tech growing facility will use a special diffused glass ceiling to maximize natural sunlight which will allow growers to use 90 percent less electricity than an average indoor grow.

Talk about thinking green.

“Makes perfect sense in the desert because in the high desert you’re talking about three hundred and fifty days of sunlight a year ... so it’s crazy not to draw on the capacity and the power of the sun,” said Gordon.

People who live in the area though have some concerns.

“I’m a little concerned if there might be a smell from the place coming over here because we’re down wind,” said Cathedral City resident Michael Hodgson “It would increase traffic, both car and pedestrian traffic and I like a quiet neighborhood,” said Cathedral City City resident Ron Pannell.

The facility will utilize carbon filters and a misting deodorizer system to control the smell of marijuana.

But that’s not all.

“Whenever we open a shipping door or loading dock or someone walks through the

facility, or opens and external door, it will have negative pressure which means the air will move into the facility and not out,” said Gordon.

Various aspects of the growing operation will be automated but a few months before it opens Sunnivaplans on hiring between 150 and 200 employees to run the day to day operations.

“At full production we estimate around about fifty million grams or fifty thousand KG’s depending on what measurement system you use,” said Gordon.

That’s a little over 110,00 pounds of marijuana every year.

To address residents’ security concerns, Sunniva will employ a 24/7 security company and armed guard along with motion detectors and around 360 surveillance cameras. The facility is scheduled to open in October 2018. Source: KMIR

Rocky Mountain high: Aspen marijuana sales outpace alcohol

By Desert Star Staff Legal distributors of cannabis in Aspen earned $11.3 million in revenue in 2017 compared with $10.5 million for liquor stores. It is the first time marijuana sales outperformed liquor for the year in the Colorado town.

The latest marijuana figures showed a whopping 16 percent increase over 2016, which registered just $9.7 million in sales, according to The Aspen Times, quoting the city’s finance department.

By comparison, Aspen’s total haul from the Food & Drug industry amounted to

$56.1 million in 2017, just a 1 percent change from 2016; the restaurant and bar sector, meanwhile, pulled in $129.7 million, a 3 percent change.

Colorado voted for legalizing recreational marijuana in 2012, with sales starting in 2014.

Aspen, a popular skiing destination, is home to six pot shops and five liquor stores. The two industries taken together account for 3 percent of Aspen’s total retail sales for 2017.

To demonstrate the surging popularity of the resort town’s favorite weed, out of 12 retail

sectors, the marijuana industry clocked in the highest rate of growth last year. At the same time, liquor store sales were flat between 2016 and 2017, according to the city’s finance department in its year-end sales tax report for 2017.

“I think it’s meaningful for a couple of reasons,” said Matt Kind, a Boulder entrepreneur and host of the CannaInsider podcast. “One in particular is when people are visiting Aspen and adjusting to a high altitude, some don’t drink for that first couple of days. different from alcohol, which is essentially poison, and marijuana is botanical.”

Kevin Dunkelberg and Fritz Mawickie, employees at Carl’s Wine Cellar in downtown Aspen, provided mixed responses to the newly released alcohol and marijuana statistics. “People have always like both,” Dunkelberg said.

In some ways, Aspen, a year-round tourist destination, can be seen as a microcosm for understanding the significant impact marijuana is having on the alcohol industry.

A study put out by Georgia State University last year

showed a 15 percent decrease in liquor sales in states that gave the green light to medical marijuana sales. The paper examines statistics in a 10-year period from 2006 to 2015.

“Our findings clearly show that these two substances act as strong substitutes in the marketplace,” Georgia State economics professor Alberto Chong said in a statement.

“This implies that rather than exacerbating the consequences of alcohol consumption — such as an increase in addiction, car accidents or disease risk — legalizing cannabis may temper them.” www.desertstarweekly.com

Public Hearing, March Against Drilling Off CA Coast

Conservation groups say new offshore oil drilling on the Pacific coast would be especially harmful to whales, seals and sea lions. (BOEM)

– The Trump administration has proposed opening up almost all federal waters to oil and gas drilling, including the California coast – and the one and only public hearing in the state takes place Thursday afternoon in Sacramento.

A coalition of opposition groups is planning a march and rally on the steps of the State Capitol just before the hearing, which is being held by the Bureau of Ocean

Energy Management.

Analise Rivero, California program coordinator with the group Defenders of Wildlife, says new offshore drilling would be extremely disruptive for marine life.

“For example, the deafening seismic testing that precedes drilling exploration wreaks havoc on marine wildlife, disturbing their natural behaviors and impairing their hearing,” she points out.

No new drilling in state waters has been allowed

since 1969, when 100,000 barrels of oil fouled the Santa Barbara coast and helped launch the modern environmental movement.

No new leases in federal waters have been permitted since 1984. But the Department of the Interior wants to have the first lease sale in Southern California in 2020 and in Northern and Central California in 2021.

The Trump administration argues that the U.S. should fully develop the commercial

potential of undersea oil and gas reserves.

Opponents in California are hoping the public will flood a website, regulations. gov, with complaints before the public comment period ends on March 9.

Rivero notes that a catastrophic spill would ruin the $20 billion tourism economy and do severe harm to the fishing industry.

And she says, more drilling would take the energy sector backward, not forward.

“Expansion of offshore drilling operations would only increase our dependence on fossil fuels, exacerbating climate change at a time when California should be moving towards a low-carbon economy,” she stresses.

The Trump administration took Florida’s coasts off the list for drilling when that state’s Republican governor complained that drilling would hurt tourism and the environment.

Both Gov. Jerry Brown and State Attorney General Xavier Becerra have demanded that the Trump administration take the California Coast off the list for new drilling.

Pipeline Construction Resumes, as Groups Condemn DEP Decision

By Desert Star Staff PHILADELPHIA – Clean air and water advocates are angry that the Department of Environmental Protection has lifted its suspension of permits for the Mariner East 2 pipeline.

The construction permits were suspended in early January for what the DEP labeled “willful and egregious” violations. But on Thursday, the DEP announced that construction can resume after Sunoco, the pipeline builder, agreed to a $12.6 million civil penalty and a stringent compliance review.

Joseph Minott, executive director of the Clean Air Council, calls that too little, too late.

“If DEP had issued the permits properly in the first place, if DEP had done enforcement and monitoring all along, we would not have had the disaster that is the Sunoco Mariner East 2 pipeline,” said Minott.

Sunoco has said it is committed to complying with the terms of the agreement and considers safety a top priority.

In a statement, DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell said his department will continue to monitor and enforce the conditions of the permits and take actions when violations occur. But Minott says past performance is hardly reassuring.

There will be a handful of performances in California before the official launch, which will be during SXSW on Wednesday, March 14 with a full day of showcase performances.

Inspired by the gutsy life and legend of Belle Starr, the

Los Angeles-based partners with roots in California and Texas, are developing a local venue showcase series, a traveling Rebelle Roadshow, as well as a podcast and boutique music festival.

They are also developing a TV series based on several books they have optioned.

The trio is taking a page from the Bandit Queen’s life as they acknowledge studying and stealing from every venue series and festival concept, mostly created by men, to develop concepts that are infused with feminine energy.

“Belle Starr was a maverick of her time, an outlaw who lived by her own rules to survive,” they state. “If women need to step up to be heard and receive

parity, then that’s what we’re going to do.” With a nod to traditional booking standards, they emphasize that male artists will not be excluded.

As part of their mission, Rebelle Road also hopes to strengthen the identity for musicians from the “California Country” community. Artist KP Hawthorn, who runs

California Country Records and is one of the few female record producers in country music, created the annual California Country Social during Americana Fest in 2016 after realizing that the Golden State was underrepresented. “We have a rich history in country music that has been minimized over the

‘It’ and ‘Geostorm’ Now On DVD According to a Cole Porter lyric, “Be a clown, be a clown, all the world loves clown,” but that ain’t necessarily so.

Emmett Kelly and Clarabelle the Clown on “Howdy Doody” were endearing, but there are also clowns who can creep you out big time. Such is the case in “IT,” based on the Stephen King horror novel of the same name. In this unsettling tale the clown is named Pennywise, and every twenty-seven years he appears in the town of Derry, Maine where he reeks havoc on the city with his acts of violence and murder which date back for centuries.

As the story begins, an older brother makes a paper boat for his little brother. The next day, as the rain comes down, the little tyke takes his

prized boat out in the rain and lets it float swiftly down the street. Soon it heads toward a storm drain and falls in. As the child bends down to retrieve it, a white-faced clown with blue eyes peers up at him with the boat in his hands. But when the boy reaches for it the leering clown (Bill Skarsgard) pulls him into the sewer below.

After the child’s disappearance, his brother and his friends try to find him and in the process, they must overcome many fears and challenges.

Running time is 135 minutes. The film is rated R for violence/horror, bloody “It” Movie images and for language.

Artist: Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa Title: Black Coffee (Mascot Label Group) You might like if you enjoy: Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart Tell me more: When singer Beth Hart and guitarist Joe Bonamassa join forces it is best to listen up. The 2011 release “Don’t Explain” was a rousing introduction to the musical chemistry between the two artists. The duo’s 2013 Grammy-nominated collaboration “Seesaw” was one of the most exciting blues releases of the year and hit #1 on the Billboard Blues Top Albums chart. On the duo’s latest highly-anticipated outing “Black Coffee,” the pair unleash 10 high-octane tracks across 44 minutes honoring the likes of Ray Charles, Edgar Winter, Ella Fitzgerald, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James and Lucinda Williams even as the two talented artists push modern blues music forward by reworking the classics. Producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Rush, Black Crowes) has helped craft

an album where both artists shine brightly even while also ensuring their talents fortify the sound across the album; take the inviting power ballad “Damn Your Eyes” that features Hart’s powerful soprano as the song’s brilliant centerpiece even while Bonamassa’s astounding guitar work magnifies the song’s sway. Artist: Chris Hillman Title: The Asylum Years

(Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Eagles, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Desert Rose Band Tell me more: For those who discovered (or rediscovered!) singer-songwriter Chris Hillman via his Tom Pettyproduced “Bidin’ My Time” masterwork in 2017, the release of “The Asylum Years” offers the

chance to discover the earliest solo recordings from Hillman (who was founding bassist of the Byrds and then co-founded The Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram Parsons) that were released via two studio albums in 1976 and 1977. The breezy “Slippin’ Away,” lush “Falling Again,” rocking “Take It On the Run” and exquisite “Love Is the Sweetest Amnesty” are early standouts on “The Asylum Years.” There is much to recommend on the last part of the collection: “(Take Me In Your) Lifeboat” is an explosive bluegrass blaster showcasing Hillman’s virtuoso skills on mandolin and Herb Pedersen’s banjo playing as well as some marvelous vocal harmonies; the lovely “Fallen Favorite” and “Hot Dusty Roads” recall the commercial country rock of The Eagles. The wonderful booklet that accompanies the audio CD includes a recent essay from Scott Schinder featuring a new interview with Hillman. The 20-track collection ultimately serves as a showcase and perfect introduction of Hillman’s winning vocals and inspired strength in crafting material that blends country, rock, folk and Americana together. Artist: Fu Manchu Title: Clone of the Universe (At the Dojo) You might like if you enjoy: Queens Of The Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, Black Sabbath Tell me more: The 12th studio album from retro-leaning stoner hard rockers Fu Manchu is a glorious affair filled with

heavy riffs, loads of distortion and dynamic time shifts, and even a guest appearance from Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson.

While the band’s sound is a throwback to the 1970s, there is a contemporary power that has been a constant in the Southern California spawned rockers’ recordings stretching back to the early 1990s. “(I’ve Been) Hexed)” features a headbanging groove and layered lead guitar textures; the heavy “Nowhere Left to Hide” fuses heavy vocals and thundering drums. The 2 minute 4 second sprint “No Panic” has the feel of a punk rocker, but the heavy layers of guitar and thundering rhythm section clearly showcase the sound of the socalled “fuzz rock” pioneers in all their glory. The high point of the disc is “Il Mostro Atomico,” an 18 minute 8 second opus that is divided into four distinct sections and marks the quartet’s most ambitious piece to date. Artist: The Choir Title: Artifact: The Unreleased Album (Omnivore Recordings)

You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, The Zombies, the Raspberries Tell me more: The 10 tracks featured on the Choir’s aptlytitled “Artifact: The Unreleased Album” were recorded back in 1969 and each bristle with a timeless energy and creative approach that will never be dated. Things begin with the stirring British Invasion-spirited “Anyway I Can” and quickly extend with sonic seams that include psychedelic (especially “Ladybug” and the instrumental “For Eric”), as well as art-, folk- and melodic- rock styles.

The rollicking “If These Are Men,” the lovely baroque-styled “Have I No Love to Offer,” the majestic “It’s All Over” and vertiginous “Boris’ Lament” could have all been radio hits at the time. The Choir was among the leading artists in Cleveland during the 1960s, and several of the musicians in the quintet would soon go on to help form Raspberries. Don’t stay at ‘Green Roof Inn,’ Florida sheriff warns

By Desert Star Staff This is one motel you don’t want to stay at! A sheriff in Florida has rebranded the local county jail as the ‘Green Roof Inn.’ The flashing neon ‘vacancy’ sign outside was bought with asset forfeiture money.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly unveiled the three new humorous signs at the facility north of Daytona Beach on Thursday. Staly has jokingly referred to the jail by its moniker “Green Roof Inn” for over a year, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

The new sign lists the amenities that “guests” who are “checking in”

can take advantage of, such as no privacy, group bathrooms and showers, and “no meal selection.”

On the upside, the sign quips that the facility provides free transportation to court and state prison, “Designer Jewelry – Handcuffs & Leg Irons,” and “Free Designer Clothing – Color Coordinated” such as a jumpsuit and shoes.

The retro neon motel sign was purchased with money from assets seized in drug arrests, according to the sheriff’s office. Staly says it’s meant to serve as a warning that jail is not a “5-star hotel.”

The inmate facility in Flagler went through a $19

million overhaul in 2016, increasing the capacity from 132 to more than 400 inmates. As of Thursday, there were 217 prisoners in the county jail.

“Hopefully when people see the signs and the list of accommodations offered, they will think twice about committing a crime in Flagler County,” Staly said.

The county, with a population of around 100,000 residents, sits about halfway between Orlando and Jacksonville, on the Atlantic coast of Florida.

Modernism Week Adds Exciting New Events to the Schedule

By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA– Modernism Week announced today that it has added many exciting new events to its schedule. The 11-day event in the Palm Springs area of Southern California will take place February 15-25, 2018, and will highlight midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture. The newly added events include a panel and home tour produced by Atomic Ranch magazine, a tour of the rarely-seen Raymond Loewy House, a fashion show, tours of the first-ever Modernism Week Showcase Home, a Palm Desert home tour, film screenings, talks, tours and many other events.

All events are open to the public and tickets are now on sale at modernismweek. com. A portion of ticket proceeds benefits local preservation, neighborhood and community groups.

One of the highlights is the opportunity to tour the first-ever Modernism Week Showcase Home - Moroccan Modern. This one-of-a-kind custom-built home from 1975 was designed by architect Hal Lacy and recently renovated to modern luxury by Thomboy Properties. When guests enter this stunning private property through majestic customcarved 10 high double entry doors, they are immediately transformed into a private and completely secluded world. While the house is thoroughly modernized, the architect created tremendous drama by adding magnificent touches that harken back to Morocco, including details in the entry and master doors, decorative medallion cutouts and metal screens visible from the street, and the geometry of the angled walls. This house represents a wonderful blend of design elements known as Moroccan Modern.

Modernism Week Showcase Home tours will be held on February 16,17,18, 23 and 24 at various times per day.

Workshops + House Tours (February 18, from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. priced at $45). Atomic Ranch, a trusted midcentury modern resource, returns to Modernism Week with a weekend full of expert advice on real estate, interior design and restoration, with a 3-part series moderated by Atomic Ranch brand leader Sarah Jane Stone. Each 90-minute session full of expert advice will be followed by a tour of local “mid mod” homes, where attendees will discover rescued features and treasured details, and meet the makers and experts that made these homes the gems they are today.

Modernism Week attendees will now have a rare chance to tour a brilliantly creative home designed for prolific industrial designer Raymond Loewy. Constructed in 1946-47 by desert modernist architect Albert Frey, Loewy’s home is a modernist desert villa with a low-slung pavilion and plenty of glass providing striking views of desert, mountains, the pool and garden – a completely private oasis. This rare house tour is an exceptional opportunity to experience this extraordinary home (listed in the National Register of Historic Places) while at the same time raising money for the 1931 Aluminaire House, designed by Albert Frey, and now stored in Palm Springs. When the new downtown park is complete, Aluminiare will be reconstructed there for permanent display.

Special guests will be Michael Schwarting and Frances Campani, the New York architects who have, for over 25 years, worked diligently to save, protect and document Aluminaire. This event is February 23, from 3 - 5 p.m. with tickets priced at $150 and $250. The event includes a reception and is a benefit for the Aluminaire House.

Iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright will be the subject of several talks during Modernism Week. Renowned architectural expert and author Alan Hess will offer a special presentation on the architect on February 18, at 9 a.m. with

tickets priced at $12. Marsh Davis, President of Indiana Landmarks will present Frank Lloyd Wright’s SAMARA: A Happy Collaboration on February 20, 2018 at 2 p.m. with tickets priced at $12.

The presentation will focus on Wright’s relationship with his clients, and how it culminated into SAMARA, the most fully realized of Wright’s famed Usonian Houses.

Fashion returns to Modernism Week with the new Modernism Fashion Show – “Spanning the Decades,” to be held February 18 at 2 p.m.

Attendees will step back in time as they “Span the Decades” through fashion. They will be transported through the eyes of Coco Chanel, Emilio Pucci, Christian Dior, and Pierre Cardin as Mitchells Palm Springs collaborates with M Vintage to display “Haute Couture” at its best. Guests will be escorted to the Warsaw Ballroom at Temple Isaiah to enjoy a glass of bubbly and view the amazing fashion retrospective.

Tickets are priced at $45.

There will be a new Palm Desert Signature Home Tour on February 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Produced and presented by Modernism Week and KUD Properties, this first-time tour of midcentury modern and “new century modern” homes will take in the beautiful neighborhoods of South Palm Desert. Until

now, many of these properties have been a well-kept secret in the greater Palm Springs area. The self-driving tour of 5-6 residences will feature a variety of neighborhoods and modern architectural styles and exclusive interior access to several fabulous homes never before seen by the public. This event is produced and sponsored by KUD Properties and benefit Modernism Week’s education, preservation and scholarship programs. Tickets are $75.

Modernism Week has teamed up with the American Documentary Film Festival (Am Docs) to host its firstever Architecture Design Art Film series. Held over three days (February 23-25) at the Camelot Theater in Palm Springs, the series will feature 26 films, documentaries and short films that cross 14 Modernism Week programs.

Gay US Olympic skier jibes VP Pence over LGBTQ stance

By Desert Star Staff An openly gay US skier, who threw shade at Mike Pence for his lack of support for the LGBTQ community, said any meeting with the vice president at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics would be a “distraction.”

Gus Kenworthy, one of the first openly gay US athletes to qualify for the Winter Olympics, indicated to reporters on Saturday that he isn’t keen on the idea of bumping into Mike Pence, who is leading the US delegation in South Korea.

“I don’t think that I have any inclination towards a meeting,” Kenworthy said. “I think that would be a much bigger distraction. For me right now, I’m just focusing on competing but I’m very excited to be here representing the US and the LGBT community.”

Kenworth’s statement comes after he posted a picture alongside American

figure skater Adam Rippon at the opening of the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, captioned: “Eat your heart out, Pence.”

The duo are both LGBTQ activists as well as Olympic athletes. The post was a thinly veiled hint at Pence’s past stance on members of the gay community.

Pence has been accused of being anti-gay, having signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which activists warned could allow businesses in Indiana to decline services to gay people on the basis of religion.

Pence tweeted to Rippon last week, declaring any reports that he at one time supported gay conversion therapy are “fake news.

In 2009 Pence also voted against the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. He later said the act could infringe on freedom of speech and lead to religious leaders being

KMIR Max Rodriguez Indio Hills, CA - Tragedy strikes the 20th annual Tour de Palm Springs, at least one cyclist was killed and a second flown to a local hospital after a driver crashed into the riders just a couple of hours after starting the race.

Sergeant Isaiah Kee with the California Highway Patrol said the accident

happened on the tour’s 100-mile route close to 9:30 Saturday morning.

“The vehicle behind me went into the west bound lane, entered the dirt shoulder where he lost control,” Kee said. “The vehicle veered back to the right and struck two passing bicyclists.”

The bicyclist were peddling through Dillon Road

in Indio Hills and reaching Avenue 30 when the riders were hit. Kee said the driver suffered minor injuries and they are still investigating if whether D-U-I was a factor.

Kee said, “Witnesses did place him at over 100 miles per hour and that information came from several other bicyclists,” An old surface with no

clear bicycle lanes make up Dillon Road, but Kee said, “In this situation the roadway had a long line of bicyclists so for a driver they should be able to see that they need to reduce their speed.”

There were no clear signs of the event on Dillon Road, although Kee said a van with the tour trailed after the riders, but, “The issue was that I

Family First: Saving Your Pets Life in a Medical Emergency

KMIR Patrick Price Palm Desert, CA - For many in the Coachella Valley, your pets are considered part of your family. So, what happens if your dog or cat has a medical emergency?

Would you know what to do to keep them alive until you make it to the vet?

Using a stuffed animal can help you learn how to do correct CPR on your dog or cat and even how to wrap wounds if they’re ever injured hopefully to save their life.

If you ask Gregory Meinherdt what matters most, it’s simple...a hug from his best friend.

“They’re our babies and we want to make sure they’re safe,” said Meinherdt.

His two dogs, Appy and Jellybean get into trouble a lot, like most dogs do, especially eating things they shouldn’t.

“You have to make sure they don’t choke,” he said.

But what if they or your dog did? Would you know what to do?

“I think I could probably ad-lib that situation,”

said Meinherdt.

Tabitha Davies, a certified dog trainer says many clients have no clue what to do.

“The owners should know where to place their hands, how to do compressions and how frequent,” she said. “So if there’s a dog fight and they’re bleeding, you need to know how to stop the bleeding. If your dog stops breathing, you need to know how to give CPR while your en route to the vet.”

If they don’t, injuries could worsen within a matter of minutes and death could come quicker.

“There’s chances that there’s more damage or loss of life on the way to the vet’s office especially when there’s not a lot of emergency clinics,” said Davies.

Other dog owners like JD Lewis has some knowledge when it comes to tending to his dog, Tosh.

“I wouldn’t know what the depths would be for compression on a dog versus a human but the breathing i think would be through the snoot,”

He’s right. Breathing through the dog’s nose once every five compressions while the animal lays on a flat surface on its side, compressing the chest for one inch to one-quarter at a rate of 100 compressions in a minute.

Those exercises that could save Lewis’s dogs lives.

“I don’t have any children, so my dog and my cat are

my children,” said Lewis.

For Lewis and other dog owners, a class that could show them the proper way to save their dogs life is imperative. Luckily, Davies teaches that class for pet parents who know their dogs lives are priceless.

“That is family, that’s extremely important and when something happens you

don’t want to be in a panic, you want to be able to know what to do,” said Lewis.

The class starts at 11am on Saturday morning and goes until 2pm at the Palma Village Park off San Carlos Avenue.

The class is free, and several spots are still available.

Warren Stanley New Commissioner to the CHP

– Warren Stanley, 56, of Sacramento has just been appointed Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol (CHP)

by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., where he has been serving as Acting Commissioner since 2017. Commissioner Stanley

has been employed with the CHP since 1982 and is one of the distinguished few to hold every position from Officer to Commissioner within the CHP. While working as a patrol officer, he served as a member of the Protective Services Detail and worked as a Field Training Officer. He excelled through the

ranks, supervising the CHP’s Border Division Investigative Services Unit as a Lieutenant, and served as the Commander of the CHP Academy, where he was responsible for the leadership of 191 employees and the training of approximately 1,700 cadets. He promoted to the rank of Chief in 2008 and assumed command of the CHP’s Coastal Division followed by the CHP’s Southern Division. Stanley was appointed to the rank of Assistant Commissioner, Staff, in 2010, followed by the rank of Assistant Commissioner, Field, in 2012.

Prior to his appointment to Commissioner, he served as the Deputy Commissioner and was responsible for the day-today operations of the largest state law enforcement agency in the nation; a Department with more than 11,000 employees.

Commissioner Stanley released the following statement following today’s appointment: “I would first and foremost like to thank Governor Brown for placing his trust in me and giving me this incredible opportunity to lead the California Highway Patrol. I am extremely honored and proud to accept this appointment and serve as

your Commissioner. I vow to continue the CHP’s long and distinguished legacy of providing Safety, Service, and Security to the people of California, and lead a Department committed to earning the public’s trust every day.”

Commissioner Stanley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Los Angeles, and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Executive Institute.

Palm Canyon Theatre delights with The Importance of Being Earnest

By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, Calif., – Oscar Wilde’s classic The Importance of Being Earnest will grace the Palm Canyon Theatre stage February 2225. Premiering on Valentine’s Day in 1895 at the St. James’ Theatre in London, the story has stood the test of time, and arguably become Wilde’s most enduringly popular play.

Subtitled, “A trivial comedy for serious people,” The Importance of Being Earnest has received critical acclaim for centuries for its high farce and witty dialogue.

The comedy centers around two bachelors who create personas, each called Earnest, to escape their tiresome lives and burdensome social obligations. The two attempts to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Earnest. The duo struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure.

Phillip Hubler will play John Worthing – one of the friends calling himself Earnest. The other Earnest (Algernon Moncrieff) will be played by Tobaiah Wilhelm.

The two women they are wooing, Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax, will be played by Ashley Davies and Chandra Smith, respectively.

Other cast includes Peter Mins as Lane, John Holton as Rev. Canon Chasuble, and Kam Sysco as Lady Bracknell.

Set in late Victorian London, the play repeatedly mocks Victorian traditions and social customs, marriage and the pursuit of love in particular. The play’s original Broadway production opened at the Empire Theatre in April 1895. Its cast included William Faversham as Algy, Henry Miller as Jack, Viola Allen as Gwendolen, and Ida Vernon as Lady Bracknell. The Importance of Being Earnest opens at the Palm Canyon Theatre on Thursday, February 22, and runs through Sunday, February 25.

Show times are 7 p.m. on Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Sunday

matinee starts at 2 p.m.

By Desert Star Staff Eighteen-year-old Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva has set a new world record for the short program at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games in South Korea, breaking her own record.

Medvedeva scored an 81.06 in the short program, putting her way ahead of Italian figure skater Carolina Kostner, who earned a 75.10. With her performance, Medvedeva not only scored 10 points for the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) figure skating team, but also broke the world record of 80.85, which she set last year at the World Team Trophy in Tokyo.

skaters have traditionally dominated pairs events since 1964, when Ludmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov claimed the first gold for the USSR at the Innsbruck Games.
