California Dreamers California Adds 215,000 People As Population Inches Toward 40 Million NBC PS News Staff California’s population grew by 215,000 people but is still shy of 40 million, the state announced Friday.

The population of the most populous state hit 39.8 million as of July 1, 2018, according to numbers from the Department of Finance that began in July 2017. California’s population

far exceeds that of any other state; Texas ranks second with nearly 29 million people, followed by Florida and New York.

California’s growth was driven by about 200,000 more births than deaths and a net migration of 21,000, meaning more people came to the state than left. Inland counties such as Amador and Placer,

The population estimates come as the state and nation prepare for a new census

count in 2020. California has added 2.6 million people since the 2010 census. The decennial count determines how many seats each state gets in Congress and how much federal money it gets for various services.

3 Popular Eating Plans You’ll See in the New Year

By Desert Star Staff If you’re thinking about revamping how you eat in the new year, you might want to think twice about the trendy dairy-free plans that crop up on your social media feed – as they could leave you missing out on nutrients you need.

Three of the most popular and health-promoting eating plans of the moment – the Mediterranean Diet, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet and Flexitarian Diet – all include dairy milk as an important

component, and according to a study in the “Journal of the American Dietetic Association,” it’s hard to get nutrients you need without it.

New research also suggests adding an extra serving of dairy to the Mediterranean Diet makes it even more nutritious, boosting amounts of calcium, vitamin D and potassium without exceeding recommendations for nutrients to limit, like saturated fat and sodium, according to a study published in “The Journal

of the American College of Nutrition.” A second new study found not only does incorporating more dairy improve the quality of the diet, it benefits health, as well – specifically improving blood pressure and levels of good cholesterol (HDL) compared to a standard low-fat diet, according to research in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”

While the Mediterranean Diet typically includes around two servings of dairy a day, these studies built in 3-4.

The DASH Diet, long known for its positive effects on heart health, includes three servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy per day. Good

news for fans of whole milk: it may be just as effective when it includes full-fat dairy, too, according to recent research in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” Researchers found a DASH diet that included whole milk and other full-fat dairy products lowered blood pressure just as much as the traditional version.

As a high-quality, complete protein, dairy milk is also an important part of the Flexitarian Diet, which encourages more plants and less meat. Many plant-based proteins are incomplete, which means they don’t provide some of the building blocks your body needs. Dairy milk is also an important source

of calcium, as substituting milk with non-dairy calcium sources like fortified soy milk or leafy greens can lead to gaps in other key nutrients such as protein, vitamin D, phosphorus, riboflavin, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin B12, according to a study in the journal “Nutrition Research.”

Technology and Consumer choice could be the drivers forcing this change. With the possibility of a looming recession, consumers cannot afford the premiums offered under ACA and want other options.

In Seventeen states, excluding California, many people have elected temporary health plans, which are 1/3rd the price of ACA. They offer coverage for 364 days and can be renewed 3 times. That extra day of non-coverage allows them not to include Pre-existing conditions each renewable year. These are plans which offer protection on a “claims made” basis. They are great savings for healthy consumers who want the unexpected covered. With the luxury of changing to traditional ACA plans during open enrollment each year, a consumer with a newly developed Medical condition can elect to enroll in ACA for the coming year and have the protection of unlimited lifetime coverage.

More Healthcare products and services will be developed and offered to meet the

needs of the consumer.

Many consumers who have opted out of purchasing the current highly inflated ACA metal plans want to buy just the protection they need, as opposed to government model plans with all the bells and whistles. These are the benefits which have escalated premiums. To keep premiums affordable, the consumer is left to elect for high deductible plans and end up paying for most of the services they will use. The consumer no longer pays the penalty for not being insured. With the advent of a menu of stand-alone services, they could purchase these benefits to fit their needs and re-insure on ACA at annual enrollment, in the event of a significant illness.

Meanwhile, consumers want more choices in how they receive care. Most consumers polled said they would opt to receive hospital care at home if it cost less than an inpatient stay. In determining the results comparing patients in recovery in their homes vs. hospital care, patients have experienced excellent results. By healing from home, their immune systems are not subject to foreign bacteria which they are subject to in facilities.

It will help to reduce costs and contribute to expedite improved services to the patient.

Later, one of the non-executive committee board members sold their condominium and the executive committee appointed a replacement board member.

There are four remaining board members; three on the executive committee and one who is not on the executive committee. Since the Corporations Code prohibits the executive committee from “filling of vacancies on the board or in any committee which has the authority of the board” per Section 7212(a)(2), can the action be reversed, changed or modified, or nullified?

What is the appropriate venue for resolution, short of filing an action in court?

Dear R.D.: I am skeptical of so-called “executive committees.” In your situation, it appears the majority is freezing out the other two directors and doing business in secret. If a board majority meets on HOA business, whether calling it an executive committee, “working meeting,” or coffee klatch, Civil Code 4090 says it is a “board meeting” and its activities must be in the open, with advance agenda notice to members. The committee’s decisions made in violation of the Open Meeting Act could be considered illegal and outside the association’s corporate process. Yes, under Corporations Code 7212, the executive committee is exceeding its power. However, and more importantly, the majority approach violates the Open Meeting Act, rendering all of its actions subject to challenge.

Rather than expensive legal action to challenge this exclusive group of directors, perhaps the homeowners would rather elect directors who will properly serve and who are willing to work with the entire board as a team.

Dear Mr. Richardson: I am a board member. During the past year, our HOA has received invoices for [tens of thousands of dollars] from our attorney. The problem is that the invoices are being redacted before submittal to the management company who in turn pays the blacked-out invoice.

At one point the HOA was paying for a legal action of a board member against a homeowner and the reason for the blacked-out bills was it was confidential information.

That action ended but the redaction of invoices continues, and the management company continues to pay the invoices. Is this in any way legal? T.M., Anaheim Hills Dear T.M.: Under Corporations Code 8334, directors may view any association record. The board should see the entire bill, except for any director who is

The attorney works for the corporation, not any particular director, and should be providing sufficient information for the board to know why the association is incurring legal fees. Ask questions – that is your job as a director. It appears someone in association leadership may be controlling access to the information and keeping it from other board colleagues.

Without a very good reason, such an information embargo should not be happening.

Tsunami crashes into crowd as Indonesian pop band play live

By Desert Star Staff Chilling footage captures the moment that a giant wave crashed a live show by Jakarta pop band ‘Seventeen,’ as a tsunami wreaked havoc in

Indonesia. One band member died and several are missing.

The video, which lasts less than a minute, shows a packed audience at the Tanjung Lesung Beach Resort

in West Java, which overlooks the Krakatoa volcano.

Revelers can be seen seated at tables, applauding as they dine, oblivious to what is about to happen. Moments

later, band members and screaming spectators are seen being washed away as a wave appears from nowhere and pounds the stage.

In a tearful video posted in the aftermath of the incident, the band’s lead singer Riefian Fajarsyah said that one band member, bassist Muhammad Awal Purbani, 36, nicknamed Bani, and their road manager Oki Wijaya had died. Fajarsyah said his wife, Dylan, the two remaining band members and a crew member were still missing.

“Andi, Herman and Ujang have not been found, please pray for them. Please pray also that my wife will be found soon. Please pray also for Bani and Oki (who passed away),” the inconsolable Fajarsyah said in an Instagram post, as translated by Channel News Asia.

For his wife’s 26th birthday on Sunday, Fajarsyah posted

a picture of the couple in Paris on Instagram along with a heartbreaking caption urging her to come home.

At least 235 people have died and almost 900 have been injured after the tsunami ripped through the area in western Indonesia, off the coast of Sumatra. Twentyeight people are still missing.

Officials said that the tsunami was triggered by a combination of factors, in particular by volcanic activity at the Krakatoa volcano and an abnormally high tide due to a full moon.

Meanwhile, the death toll is expected to climb further as some remote areas are still be searched for survivors.

“This number will continue to rise, considering [that] not all places have been checked,” said National Disaster Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

By Desert Star Staff At least 235 people have been killed as a tsunami hit beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia on Saturday night, according to the country’s officials.

Dozens remain missing, and hundreds have been injured.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the wave was not caused by an earthquake but was possibly the result of an eruption of Mount Krakatoa.

The agency later explained that its early warning systems are mostly tied to tectonic activity, rather than volcanic.

The tsunami-like conditions were likely caused by undersea landslides resulting from volcanic activity at Krakatoa Volcano, according to the disaster agency. The volcano, also located in the Sunda Strait, has been spewing ash and periodically erupting for the past several months.

Proposed SNAP Rules: An “End Run around Congress?”

By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – After failing to get deep cuts to nutrition assistance through Congress, President Donald Trump wants to get them by changing the rules.

Trump had backed a Republican plan that critics warned would have ended SNAP or food-stamp benefits for two million Americans and school meal access for 265,000 children.

Congress rejected those changes when it passed the Farm Bill last week. So on Thursday, Trump proposed new rules restricting states’ ability to provide SNAP benefits to

childless adults living in highunemployment areas who are struggling to find work.

Rebecca Vallas, vicepresident of the poverty team at the Center for American Progress, says the rules would force hundreds of thousands of unemployed SNAP participants to lose the help they need to put food on the table.

“Ultimately, he failed to gut food stamps in the Farm Bill and so now, he’s sidestepping Congress and trying unilaterally to slash food assistance by fiat,” says Vallas. “And he’s doing that just days before Christmas.”

The administration points

out that unemployment is at record low levels and says the new rules would save $15 billion over ten years.

Vallas insists a better approach would be to raise the federal minimum wage, set at $7.25 an hour for the past ten years. She says raising it to just $12 an hour would make a huge difference.

“That would save $53 billion in nutrition assistance over the coming decade, and it would do so by ensuring that workers earn enough to afford food,” says Vallas.

The administration’s own numbers show that under the proposed rule December 26, 2018

change, more than 750,000 unemployed people would lose SNAP benefits.

Vallas adds research has shown that taking food away from workers who can’t meet strict workreporting requirements is counterproductive.

“When workers have access to basics like food

and housing and health care, they’re better able to work and they have higher earnings,” says Vallas.

Once the rules are published in the Federal Register, there will be a 60 day period for public comment before they could be put into effect.

Hardcore porn at school? Calls for sex education to get more graphic

By Desert Star Staff The internet has given teenagers access to so much porn, fetish, and experimental sex that schools may have to get a lot more graphics when addressing classes, a study has found.

Teenagers are becoming more adventurous and are moving away from ‘traditional’ intercourse, according to researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine(LSHTM) and University College London.

By monitoring sexual habits, the team found the number of 16-24s moving away from traditional sexual intercourse had doubled. Access to porn online was blamed as one of the problems.

“At a time when much sex and relationships education is being updated, keeping pace with current trends in sexual practices is crucial so that curricula are tailored to the realities of young people’s experiences” Dr. Ruth Lewis, who conducted the work

while at the LSHTM said.

“By shedding light on when some young people are having sex and what kinds of sex they are having, our study highlights the need for accurate sex and relationships education that provides opportunities to discuss consent and safety about a range of sexual practices.”

Researchers compared today’s sexual practice with what teenagers have been doing since 1990. They found sex was changing, but the age of the teens’ first-ever sexual experience has not changed much in almost 30 years.

The median age for loss of virginity among men and women born between 1990 and 1996 was 14, yet it is now 16 across for both men and women. However, it has got younger over the decades. The median age in 1950 was 20 for women and 19 for men.

“The changes in practices we see here are consistent with the widening of other aspects of young people’s

sexual experience and are perhaps not surprising given the rapidly changing social context and the ever-increasing number of influences on sexual behavior. It is important to keep up-to-date with trends in sexual lifestyles to help young people safeguard their health and increase their well-being,” Kaye Wellings, Professor of Sexual and Reproductive

Health at LSHTM, said. The research was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Last year the site Pornhub, which offers free content, revealed its videos were watched 92 billion times in 2016. It also boasted 64 million daily visitors.

Following devastating wildfires and catastrophic hurricanes, thousands of families are left in desperate need, and with the potential de-incentivization for middle-income Americans to give under the new tax code, year-end donations are more critical than ever.

“For more than a century, we’ve been blessed with

Despite positive economic news, it’s worth noting that the U.S. Census Bureau estimates

nearly 40 million Americans still live in poverty, with millions more living paycheck to paycheck. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, more than a half a million people nationwide are homeless on a given night, and that number is increasing for the first time since 2015.

Hotel in Russia’s Crimea named best in the world

By Desert Star Staff Russia’s Mriya Resort & Spa in the Crimea has been named the best holiday hotel and resort by the World Travel Awards.

The hotel won the award in the world’s leading leisure resort category.

Russia’s Aeroflot airline was

named the best brand and the city of St. Petersburg best tourist destination.

The Mriya Resort & Spa has won the award for the first time. Its competitors in the category were the Atlantis The Palm in Dubai, Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, the

Italian Forte Village Resort and Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort in Egypt.

The World Travel Awards doesn’t specify whether the Mriya hotel is Russian or Ukrainian. The Crimean hotel was opened in 2014. The resort is 30 kilometers from Yalta, and offers 422 rooms

“My wife and I spoke earlier this year and I decided I wanted to make it bigger and better so we’ve been buying toys throughout the year,” said Collins.

On Sunday December 23rd at 6 p.m. Santa on Via Vista in Desert Hot Springs is expecting up to 350 kids to show up for a photo, gift, candy, cookies and hot cocoa to wash it down. The entire “Santa at the mall” experience free of charge for anyone who drops by.

“One lady said that she has three kids and it was going to cost her over a hundred bucks. I said ‘I don’t charge anything.’

They even offered to pay and I don’t charge anything for it,” Collins said.

Collins says he became accustomed to spoiling his own children. But now that they are adults, Collins shares the same spirit of giving with the children in his neighborhood.

Spinners, dolls, hot wheels and puzzles are up for grabs.

Some of it payed for out of his own wallet, some donated.

This year Collins is giving local malls a run for their money.

“My daughter in law is a semi-professional photographer and she’s actually going to be taking photos with her camera, she’s done a background and she will give people an email address where they get the professional photos from,” said Collins.

Nonprofit gives the “Gift Of Music” for the holidays NBC PS- Daytona Everett A nonprofit rock and roll thrift store called Music Heals is giving kids the “gift of music” this holiday season as they peak in their sales for the year.

“It’s kind of cool because people ask how much this item and I is say you decide the price of the item,” Jason Nutter, the owner of the store, said.

he’s picking up shifts at the busy store to help out.

“I was like, I’m going to work the Christmas season and I’ve been here since like ten in the morning till I’d say like nine at night and people have just been having fun and buying things and donating,” he said. “Its been great.”

“It’s a really good foundation,” Norah Adams, a musician and customer said. “I think it’s really cool, I like stores like this.”

In food processor, combine blue cheese crumbles and cream cheese.

Galilee Center Still Receiving Toy Donations

NBC PS Claudia Buccio Boxes at the Galilee Center in Mecca are all marked up with hundreds of toys ready to find a home on Christmas Day. The center is expecting more than a thousand children on their 8th annual toy giveaway, and each child will get 2 or 3 presents.

Lupe Torres is the office manager at the Galilee Center, who said the organization is still taking toy donations for families across the Coachella Valley.

“Most of them are low income, their parents work in the hospitality center or single parents like you mentioned, and they don’t have the funding to buy them bicycles or 2 or 3 toys to their entire family,” Torres said.

Organizers and volunteers have been planning this for

months. Torres said she has noticed that more families come every year. However, the event is only a few days away, and they are still running low on toys.

“We started in September asking for donations and asking organizations to help us,” she said.

Augustine Casino stepped in to help their desert community. Brett Hunn is the assistant manager at Augustine Casino, and he said it was important for them to help collect toys and food.

“It’s our way to give back to the community,” Hunn said. “It’s our little part to help the Galilee Center, they are doing so much for the families around our area, so this can only add to the help. “ Augustine Casino already delivered some toys to the

Trump to stay in Washington as government shutdown creeps over Christmas

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump will spend Christmas away from his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate due to the government shutdown, as the White House and lawmakers scramble to avert defunding key government agencies over the border wall row.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders announced that Trump’s wife, Melania, who had already left for Florida, would be flown back to the White House so the Trumps can spend Christmas together.

Trump is not normally known for skipping his Mara-Lago days off, which have come under media scrutiny for being too frequent and sometimes ill-timed. In February, he came under fire for “playing golf” at his estate in the wake of the Florida school shooting that left 17 dead, while funerals for the victims took place just 45 miles away.

While the Friday midnight deadline for the Senate to approve a bipartisan spending bill has already passed, federal workers won’t return to work until Wednesday, meaning the White House still has time to clinch a last-minute deal with the Senate Democrats.

If no decision is made, the shutdown will leave about 800,000 workers across nine government agencies without

pay, including NASA and the departments of State, Justice, Homeland Security, Agriculture, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

380,000 of them would be put on unpaid leave, while 420,000 would continue to do their job without pay. The shutdown would take its toll on national parks and landmarks, with many expected to close down at the height of the holiday season. The Statue of Liberty, however, will remain open to the public, with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) saying that the state would reimburse the federal government $65,000 for each day of the shutdown.

Closing a rare session on Saturday, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell told lawmakers to go home for holidays, saying that the Senate would convene for what most likely would be a “pro forma”session on Monday.

However, he did not rule out calling the Senators back if a deal is struck. Vice President Mike Pence said they are “still talking,” implying that the White House is bent on trashing out a compromise despite the odds.

Under Trump’s pressure, the Republican-controlled House on Thursday passed a bill which includes $5.7 billion for the wall, thus setting the stage for the Democrats in the Senate to complete the shutdown, being as they are strongly opposed to what Trump now calls “artistically designed steel slats” on the US-Mexico border.

Some lawmakers still harbor optimism. Outgoing

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) said on Saturday he believes “cooler heads will prevail.” In case the parties bridge their disagreements, lawmakers might vote by “unanimous consent” without returning to Washington, he said.

Trump has ramped up his criticism of Democrats, accusing them of forcing the US government to a standstill.

“Shutdown today if Democrats do not vote for Border Security!” Trump tweeted on Friday, adding after McConnell refused to lower the threshold needed to pass the spending bill: “The Democrats

now own the shutdown!”

Without the nuclear option, Republicans need 60 votes in the Senate to pass the legislation, while they only have 51 seats.

Trump’s accusatory rhetoric is a U-turn from his statement last week. Meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, Trump said that he was “proud to shut down the government for border security.” “I will be the one to shut it down. I’m not going to blame you for it,” he said then.

Mattis to leave on Jan 1, deputy Shanahan to replace him

By Desert Star Staff Not willing to wait for the resigning US defense chief James Mattis to finish his term, President Donald Trump has announced that his deputy Patrick Shanahan will serve as acting defense secretary from January 1.

Mattis resigned from Trump’s administration this week citing policy differences and offered to stay in his post for two more months until the

end of February. While Trump himself had confirmed the time frame, he has now made it clear Mattis will be out of the team quite a bit earlier.

Reports and speculation emerged that the abrupt change was caused by Mattis’ resignation letter and the attention it received. Trump was irked by the letter, which implicitly criticized his policies and the decision to withdraw from Syria, and decided

to oust the Secretary of Defense immediately, Reuters

reported, citing a source.

Shortly after the announcement, Trump revealed that he held telephone talks with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which the two discussed “mutual involvement in Syria” and the “slow and highly coordinated pullout of US troops from the area.”

Mattis’ resignation may signal further changes in US foreign policy, as he was one of the last “old school” officials sticking to “alliances and stability” to maintain the “US-led world order,” former Pentagon official Michael Maloof believes.

Trump has come around and blown that all up. He looks at America first, while paying lip service to alliances such as NATO, but in reality, he wants

a strong America. Mattis did too, but in coordination with allies,” Maloof told RT, adding that such a stance on Trump’s part actually speeds up the emergence of a multipolar world, which ultimately further damages “US hegemony.”

The departure of Mattis certainly won’t help Trump garner support among the military, Maloof believes, saying that it might even damage the morale of US troops.

“He had a tremendous respect among the troops. I knew General Mattis – partially – and the respect that he engendered from the rank and file military was almost as though he was another General Patton,” he said. “I don’t think the military is going to be supportive of Donald Trump as a consequence.”

Under the Proposed Action, March ARB would provide ramp and runway space for the temporary relocation and operation of sixteen (16) C17As assigned to the 62d Airlift Wing (AW) at JBLM while their runway is closed for repairs. Temporary operation of these C-17A aircraft would occur from approximately February 22 through June 15, 2019. The Proposed Action also includes the relocation of approximately 331 personnel during this time. All 62d AW C-17As would operate in support of Tanker/Airlift Control Center directed missions only, and would use the same existing flight path routings, operating hours, hangar, fuel cell, and wash rack currently used by March ARB C-17As. Dept. of Education to cancel $150 million in student loan debt NBC PS News Staff The U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday it would automatically cancel $150 million in student loans connected to for-profit colleges that closed in recent years.

The move was made under an Obama-era policy that a federal judge in October essentially forced U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to implement. The story was first reported by Politico.

The discharge of loans applies automatically to about 15,000 students who attended now-defunct colleges that closed between Nov. 1, 2013, and Dec. 4, 2018, according to the department’s announcement.

About half of those affected attended Corinthian

Colleges, Inc., a chain that closed on April 27, 2015, the department stated. Other students who attended recently closed campuses or who believe they were otherwise defrauded can still apply to have their loans canceled, the department said.

The office of Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. the ranking member of the Health, Labor, Education and Pensions Committee, said DeVos was “still trying to rewrite the underlying rule” that sparked the loan cancellations.

In April, DeVos canceled memos published by the Department of Education under President Barack Obama that imposed tougher rules on how the federal government oversees student loan debt connected to for-

profit colleges. California and other states sued.

Murray’s office said more than 100,000 students have outstanding claims against the institutions in question.

“It’s disappointing that it took a court order to get Secretary DeVos to begin providing debt relief to students left in the lurch by predatory for-profit colleges,” Murray said, “but I am pleased the department has finally started implementing this rule and that some of the borrowers who attended schools like Corinthian Colleges and ITT Tech are finally getting their loans canceled. By Desert Star Staff It may be the season to be jolly but that’s not going to stop witches wanting to get a piece of the press pie to tell President Trump to stop using his beloved ‘witch hunt’ mantra.

The community of wiccans are utilizing the festive season to share what means the most to them – and that’s criticizing Trump for using the offensive term ‘witch hunt’. Of course, the politically correct mainstream media has felt obliged to listen to their plight.

The witches say Trump’s repeated use of the term throughout his presidency, and

most recently to describe the Russia investigation, fails to recognize the “worst period in our history,” according to witch Kitty Randall.

If Mueller’s investigation were truly a ‘witch hunt,’ then Donald Trump would be hanging naked from chains in a cold barn somewhere, being tortured into admitting his pact with Satan, before being burned at the stake …

Instead he’s golfing at Mara-Lago,” Randall adds.

It appears their endeavor to clear the good name of witches has been somewhat of a success. Their plight has

been covered by CNN, The New York Post, USA Today, Fox News, The Daily Beast.

Trump has reportedly used the phrase more than 60 times on Twitter alone, leading some witches – including this Brooklyn coven – to take the drastic step of casting a spell on the president.

Some may not realize that Trump could in fact be referring to the McCarthyist sort of witch hunts rather than the actual bloody medieval practices, but then again, the 45th president is not always helping his critics with the context.

Portland Airport Workers Win Wage Raise

By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland International Airport workers have scored a major victory and will start receiving a minimum wage of $15 an hour starting in 2019.

The wage increase from $12 to $15 will go to passenger service assistants, who transport passengers through the airport. Workers have been calling for a wage increase and better conditions for years, and held a day of action in October, in tandem with airport workers around the globe.

Maggie Long is executive director of the Service Employees International Union – or SEIU – Local 49, which represents about 450 contracted PDX workers at different companies. She says these workers have struggled with poverty wages for years.

“To be seeing a $3 wage increase is just going to have a profound impact on people’s lives,” says Long. “And so, very excited to see workers be able to move forward.”

The wage increase brings PDX closer to other major U.S. airports. This year,

(SEIU Local 49) San Francisco approved raising contract workers’ minimum wage to $17 an hour, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved a $19 per-hour minimum wage for 40,000 workers at three airports that serve New York City.

Hernandez says making $12 an hour, she’s had to make tough decisions between necessities like medicine and housing – and a $3 increase will make a big difference.

“I was speaking with my husband, ‘We cannot pay the mortgage with $12 an hour!’

But 15? Yes, and we still can pay electricity. We can pay all the bills,” says Hernandez.

While hundreds of passenger service assistants will see a raise, Long says other workers, such as baggage handlers and aircraft cleaners, still are fighting for an increase.

“Airlines continue to make record profits and workers who help fuel those flights, clean those flights, keep the airports running, need to not be left behind,” says Long.

Cuomo’s “Green New Deal” Draws Praise

Cuomo outlined his legislative agenda for the first 100 days of 2019 on Monday, including a call for addressing climate change by achieving 100 percent carbonfree electricity by 2040. New York’s clean-energy standard currently calls for 50 percent renewable energy by 2030.

“We think that’s exactly what New York has to do to lead the nation to get off of fossil fuels as rapidly as possible, and make the transfer to a clean-energy economy,” he said.

Last January, the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority released an Offshore Wind Master Plan to develop 2,400 megawatts of offshore wind power by 2030.

Proposals for constructing the first 800 megawatts of offshore wind are due

in February and contracts could be signed by June.

Martens said a second procurement process could begin right away.

“They’re very much on track for offshore wind,” he

said, “and their procurement schedule for land-based renewables has been also very much on track.”

He noted that siting and construction of onshore wind farms has been slow, and the state is being urged to accelerate that process.

However, some critics have said the governor has fallen far short of providing the funding needed to reach the goal of 50 percent renewables by 2030, let alone 100 percent a decade later.

Martens said he thinks a detailed plan should be the next step in the process.

“Hopefully, the administration in this 100 days is also going to spell out a plan so that we can accelerate renewables generally,” he said.

“And now, having set this new goal, we’re confident that New York is actually going to get there and lead the nation.”
