With direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne and music by Tchaikovsky, “Swan Lake” will play the Ahmanson

through January 5, 2020.

The role of ‘The Swan’ is performed by Will Bozier and Max Westwell. ‘The Prince’ is performed by James Lovell and Andrew Monaghan, while ‘The Queen’ is performed by Nicole Kabera and Katrina Lyndon.

‘The Girlfriend’ is also performed by Katrina Lyndon.

She is joined by Freya Field and Carrie Willis.

Written by predominantly women, the show hits the mark on many topics that will resonate with women of all ages, and even some men. From the first kiss to the first sexual encounter, job interviews, proposals, and eventually funerals,

the LBD has played an essential part in many lives.

In a nutshell, the story centers on best friends Dee (Danielle Trzcinski) and Mandy (Jennette Cronk), who at age 13 pledge to be BFFs for life and to take a dream trip to “Paree!” when they grow up.

When Dee’s mom (Jenna Cormey) takes the girls to a boutique to find dresses for their upcoming school dance, they are introduced to and fall in love with the LBD. The rest of the show covers the progression of

My Vacation ‘Down Under’

Story and Photos by Pat Krause After a 15 hour flight, we landed in Melbourne and off to our lovely hotel. We shopped at the marketplace, where hundreds of vendors showed a variety of Australian wares. I wanted to buy more but had to watch our luggage weight. We took two tours where we saw the 12 apostles, the London bridge, and more extraordinary scenery with ocean waves breaking on the rocks. We walked along the beach, and we’re awed by the magnificence of the rock formations. One tour was again along the coast, where we stopped and saw kangaroos in

the wild, fed colorful birds that ate from our hands and perched on our heads. The next stop was an animal sanctuary that allowed us to feed and pet kangaroos, take photos of koalas, dingoes, and more. Later in the tour was the sunset penguin parade.

Thousands of small penguins came out of the water and headed inland to their burrows.

They were so funny to watch!

The next day was our flight to Uluru, which was in the middle of Australia, the outback part, and was my favorite so far. We saw aborigines, some selling their artwork. We took the sunrise and sunset tour of

Ayres rock, which is over 6 miles around. My daughter walked it and said it was so amazing as her tour guide told her a lot about the rock and a significance in the faith of the aborigine People’s. The rock changes colors at both sunrise and sunset every couple of minutes.

We stop at the Kata-Tjuta range of stones that just came out of the desert floor. Uluru is a tiny community with essential stores and vendors. This part of the Australian outback was what I was looking for in my travels in Australia and would recommend it thoroughly. We were not to take photos of the

aboriginal peoples. I could write a book about all I saw there.

The plane flight to your Uluru was with Jetstar, and I would not recommend that you ever fly with that airline. We were not told we would have less luggage weight, including our carry-on and backpack.

Needless to say, we sat on the floor and continued to throw away anything that was not essential to make the required weight to fly without huge extra charges for overweight luggage.

Our next flight was with Qantas, and a nice change in airlines for out stay in Cairns, which is along the ocean

coastline. We again shopped at the Night Market the first night as we had a tour in the morning to see the rain forest, taste local fruits, and swim in the Davis River inside the lush tree-filled mountain areas. The last day in Cairns was another tour that took us out to the great barrier reef where I went snorkeling for the first time and rode a glass-bottom boat to see the beautifully colored fish and coral reef. This is an unforgettable first week in beautiful Australia. We ate a lot of local seafood in Cairns, and I eat calamari, emu, crocodile, and a variety of fish. Yum!

that child is eligible to open and contribute to a Kiddie Roth IRA. The Kiddie Roth IRA is technically established by a minor child’s parent (or grandparent) as a custodial account, with the adult acting as custodian and the minor as the account holder. Once the funds are transferred into the child’s account, the transfer is irrevocable (i.e., the funds cannot later be transferred into an account for another individual). Once the child is no longer a minor, the funds become his or hers to control.

As long as the child has Earned income, whether it comes from a self-employed job, like mowing lawns, etc., or from a W-2, if the child earned $6,000 in 2019, a parent or grandparent can fund the Kiddie Roth IRA for that child with $6,000.

Self-employed parents, hiring the minor child to work in the family business, can produce an additional tax

benefit because the parentemployers can deduct the child’s earnings as business expenses. However, if the company is organized as a corporation, the child’s wages will be subject to FICA and FUTA withholding even if the child is under age 18 (for sole proprietorships, husband-wife partnerships and certain LLCs taxed as proprietorships or husband-wife partnerships, the wages of the minor will be exempt from FICA and FUTA).

In general, Roth IRA contributions can be withdrawn at any time and are not taxed as the account is funded with after-tax dollars.

Despite this general rule, a ten percent penalty tax will apply to any Roth IRA earnings that are withdrawn within the first five years after the Kiddie Roth IRA is established, or that are withdrawn before the child has reached age 59½, died, or become disabled.

The penalty tax (as well

as typical income taxes) on Kiddie Roth IRA earnings up to $10,000 can also be avoided if the account owner uses the funds to purchase his or her first home. The penalty on earnings is avoided if the funds are withdrawn to pay for qualified education expenses.

Importantly, the actual funds that were contributed are not subject to the penalty or taxes upon withdrawal for any reason, and withdrawals from Roth IRAs are treated as first coming from the actual contributions.

The Kiddie Roth IRA can provide an attractive option for those looking to help children and grandchildren save for college, a first home purchase, or even their eventual retirement, this holiday season. When the account is adequately funded and maintained, the value of the account’s compounded growth– potentially over decades–

The best source for correction of a poorly running association? The answer lies with the membership. When the members’ dissatisfaction level becomes sufficient to override their normal complacency, a new board can be elected.

Associations can improve their operation by electing directors who will take the time to learn what the governing documents and law require, and who will govern the community as diligent servant leaders. Electing directors devoid of personal ego and agendas and who simply want to do things correctly is far better than all the court orders in the world.

Encourage increased volunteer involvement. Demand that

We have this valuable tool to help build security for our children’s future, but this may not always be the case.

Instead of a massive new state bureaucracy regulating HOAs and managers, or filing expensive and divisive lawsuits, the best approach is to increase participation and implement higher standards of involvement, governance, and service to improve associations.

5 Winter Home Safety Tips

While you often hear about cold-weather fashion and beauty essentials, there is some maintenance your home needs too. Give your sanctuary some love with these five steps from the home safety experts at Kidde.

Clean Your Oven: Ranges and cooktops are involved in 62% of home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Stovetops and ranges, in particular, caused 87% of home fire deaths.

Particularly in the winter when comfort foods are prominent, it’s necessary to clean your oven and stovetop to remove grease and fat, which can ignite. Always

keep towels and oven mitts away from hot appliances.

Keep a Kitchen Fire Extinguisher Ready: Research from the National Fire Protection Association shows about half of all home fires start in the kitchen, so it’s important to have a fire extinguisher handy. Look for one specifically designed for kitchen applications, and keep the extinguisher behind you when cooking.

In the event of a fire, there’s risk of burning yourself if you must reach over the fire to grab the extinguisher.

If you’ve forgotten when the alarms were installed, check the date on the back of the smoke alarm. If you’re interested in a long-term fix, alarms are available with a built-in 10-year battery. When times comes to replace the unit, the alarm will signal.

Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms: On average, one person dies each day from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the United States. CO is known as the silent killer because you can’t see, smell or taste this poisonous gas. During winter months, CO incidents spike but symptoms can easily be mistaken for the flu. Natural gas furnaces, water heaters, ranges, gasoline-powered tools, cars, wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and more produce CO. Because CO doesn’t rise like smoke, it mixes with the air and can go through drywall. From plugin to battery-operated and LED display, CO alarms are available in a range of options.

Federal Anti-Immigration Policy Hurting Children, Report Says

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – In California, 1.3 million children younger than age five may lose out on essential services because of a hostile immigration climate, according to a new report.

Researchers from two children’s advocacy

groups found that the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies and heightened law enforcement have had major impacts on children up to age five.

Andrea Lopez, family and community engagement coordinator at Para Los Niños, which runs Head Start child

care centers in Los Angeles, says families are dropping out of crucial programs for fear of being deported.

“That’s been the most heart-wrenching thing for us, is seeing their struggle and the fear that has been embedded in them,” she states.

are refusing all forms of public assistance, even for their American citizen children, mistakenly believing that this would be held against them when applying for residency.

President Donald Trump says his policies are designed to reinforce the rule of law and save taxpayer dollars.

Mayra Alvarez, a report coauthor and president of The Children’s Partnership, an advocacy organization focused on children’s health equity, says many children suffer, terrified that their parents won’t be there when they get home from school.

“The kids are becoming more aggressive,” she points out. “There’s also greater separation anxiety. Social withdrawal, being more stressed out as a result of this environment.”

Patricia Lozano, another coauthor and executive director of Early Edge California, an advocacy organization focused

on early learning, encourages state policymakers to pass a law that declares preschools and day care centers off limits to immigration officers – something already in place at K-12 schools in the state.

“Early childhood programs should be safe places for families, and the providers and teachers need the support to provide the right resources to face this hostile environment,” she stresses.

California demonstrated its commitment to early childhood programs by allocating funds in the new state budget to train home visitors from the Cal Works program on ways to blunt the impact of federal immigration policies and help families connect to needed services.

7 Steps to Take Before Hitting the Road this Holiday

By Desert Star Staff If you’re among the millions of Californians who will hit the road for the holidays, you’ll want to make sure your car is road-trip ready.

Foster Care Advocates Press for Greater Focus on Education

By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS – Truancy rates are high and graduation rates are low – especially for Nevada’s 4,200 children in foster care – and child advocates say systemic change is needed.

Research shows that 47.5% of foster children in Clark County fail to graduate high school.

Kelly Venci Gonzalez, team chief of the Education Advocacy Program, part of the Children’s Attorneys Project at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, contends that many of those children have undiagnosed learning disabilities, which can lead to school absences, poor grades and despair.

“If they’re just either failing or passing kids through, and not really analyzing why a kid is failing, we think that’s contributing to the www.desertstarweekly.com

truancy issue,” she states.

Two laws passed this year may make a dent in the problem. One bill requires courts to appoint an education decision maker for each foster child. The other bill requires individual education plans to be attached to each child’s legal case file.

Venci Gonzalez says it should be standard practice for judges at each hearing to ask how a foster child is doing in school, but she says school is often an afterthought.

Venci Gonzalez notes that in 2018 the Silver State’s high school graduation rate ranked 49th in the nation.

“And I think it’s a symptom of that,” she asserts. “We need to take school more seriously, especially for our vulnerable kids.”

Bullitt County Public Schools superintendent Jesse Bacon recently announced his district will sue e-cigarette companies over their targeted marketing to young people.

“I want all of our taxpayers to know that we’re not using district funds to pursue this,” Bacon said. “This is all on the backs of the attorneys that have agreed to represent us, and so any compensation that the attorneys get would be based on any kind of favorable judgment or settlement that the district gets.”

Juul, the most popular e-cigarette manufacturer, maintains its marketing was geared toward people who already were smokers. Last week, the Fayette County

Public Schools board unanimously voted to sue Juul and other companies for sparking what it called an epidemic of nicotine addiction among students in the Commonwealth.

Bacon said because nearly 70% of his students have either tried vaping or are actively vaping, the number of infractions related to e-cigarette use has skyrocketed and taken up a huge portion of his administration’s time.

“They are so sophisticated now, where it’s almost impossible, or nearly impossible, for our teachers to be able to detect what’s going on,” he said. “Our teachers, we’re having to train them to be the vaping police, and that shouldn’t be their first responsibility. Their first responsibility should be to educate these kids.”

Legislators Seek to Curb Rise in Maternal Deaths

By Desert Star Staff The American Academy of Physicians and other groups are continuing to press Congress to pass two bills aimed at reducing the nation’s high maternal death rate. The U.S. continues to rank one of the most dangerous countries in the developed world to give birth, especially for women of color.

Monifa Bandele, senior vice president of Moms Rising, said medical biases often mean black women’s concerns during and after pregnancy are ignored.

“Too often, women, and especially black women, are in the hospital or they’re with the health-care provider, and the things that they’re raising, they are considered to be hysterical, their concerns aren’t being taken seriously, medically seriously,” Bandele said.

Legislators have introduced two bills, the Maternal Health Quality

Improvement Act and the Helping Medicaid Offer Maternity Services Act, that, if passed, would help close the racial bias gap and extend Medicaid coverage to new moms for up to 1 year.

According to the nonprofit organization NC Child, 1 in 5 women of reproductive age in North Carolina is uninsured.

Bandele said health-care access for new moms following delivery is critical.

“Right now, in many states, Medicaid, once a woman gives birth, will continue to cover the child, but the mom drops off within weeks,” she said. “One of the big causes of death is postpartum hemorrhaging.

And so, if you’re not able to get your follow-up and see the doctor, then you are at risk of experiencing complications post-delivery.”

‘Marriage Story’--An Emotional Netflix Drama

Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” is a bittersweet drama about a relationship that is coming to an end. Charlie Barber (Adam Driver, “Star Wars” and Scorsese’s “Silence’) is a New York director, married to actress Nicole Barber (Scarlet Johansson, “Avengers,” “Jo Jo Rabbit’).

While they still care for each other, their career choices are driving them apart. He is a

dedicated New York theatre director while she is drawn to work in Hollywood films and television. During most of their married life, they both lived and worked in New York, but now she wants to be in control of her acting choices, which are limited in the Big Apple.

At this point in her life, she wants to return to Los Angeles so that she can resume her career as a film actress, In marriage counseling,

they are encouraged to write a letter to one another, describing why they once loved each other. Perhaps this might lead to an eventual reconciliation. He is willing to share what he has written, but in defiance, she walks out, taking her letter with her unread without explaining why.

In happier times, we see the couple interacting with their son, Henry (Azhy Robertson), who is now

Her choice is Norah (Laura Dern), a real barracuda in a skirt.

At this point, Charlie reluctantly hires Bert (Alan Alda). Bert is kindly and affordable but no match against Norah, who is definitely out to take Charlie to the cleaners. In desperation, Charlie then turns to Jay (Ray Liotta), who is as conniving and forceful as Norah.

Life becomes especially tricky for Charlie as he tries to maintain a Los Angeles residency while continuing

to direct in New York. And in Los Angeles, he needs to prove to a family evaluator (Martha Kelly) that he is capable of providing a suitable home for his son so that he can retain equal custody.

Writer/director Baumbach explored the pain of a broken marriage 14 years ago in “The Squid and the Whale.” He is now back in a similar territory.

This time he has created a film that has attracted critical approval and will most surely be an Oscar nominee.

“Marriage Story,” from Netflix, is rated R for language throughout and sexual references. Running time 2 hours, 16 minutes.

time where the two women’s’ futures diverge, but they hang on to their friendship despite many setbacks. Dee marries Mark (Clint Hromsco) and has a baby girl Madison, while Mandy remains defiantly single as she forges her own path in life.

There are times in the show where the actors call on audience members to share their own memories of first kisses and bachelorette parties, which leads to some unexpected shenanigans. The night I went, one woman was so startlingly raunchy that the performers struggled to keep a straight face during the “A Night You’ll Never Forget” number. There is always a risk in improvised segments, as they can often slow a showdown, but again the ladies (and gentleman) had

it under semi-control. LOL. The set is simple (perfect for roadshows and local theater companies), the LBDs could have been a tad more stylish, and some of the choreography and staging was a little dodgy. Still, overall, it charmed the audience who gave the performers a rousing, well-deserved ovation at evening’s end.

Kudos to all the talented folks who brought LBD to life, including creators Amanda Barker, Natalie Tenenbaum, Danielle Trzcinski, and Christopher Bond, who also directed.

Love Actually Live, a Sparkling Musical Gift for the Holidays

By Lisa Lyons Next to “It’s a Wonderful Life,” one of the most beloved Christmas big-screen films is “Love Actually,” directed by Richard Curtis, that counts down the drama-filled weeks leading up to Christmas in the lives of five separate yet intertwined Londoners.

The show is back after last year’s sellout run at the Wallis Annenberg Theatre in Beverly Hills and is now playing there through December 29.

In the tradition of the live sing-along nights at the Hollywood Bowl, “Love Actually LIVE” is a multi-media concert experience where the film and live-action seamlessly intertwine throughout the London setting.

The result is a satisfying trip down memory lane for the audience, and the opening night theatergoers responded with wild enthusiasm.

To briefly recap, the families and friends whose lives we enter are David, the newly elected Prime Minister of London and his workingclass assistant Natalie; recently widowed Daniel and his adorable stepson Sam; newlyweds Peter and Juliet and his lovelorn best friend Mark; lonely editor Sarah and her erstwhile crush Karl; Sarah’s cynical boss Harry and his wife Karen who suspects he is having an affair with sexy Mia; Billy Mack, a faded rock star angling for a comeback with the support of his longsuffering manager Joe; and jilted author Jamie, who is writing his newest book in France, and his beautiful Portuguese housekeeper Aurelia who speaks no English.

Original songs, as well as featured numbers from the movie soundtrack, are presented on a gorgeous set with a 10-foot-high decorated Christmas tree at the center and two side areas where scenes are played out. There is a fantastic live orchestra that plays both onstage and, at some points, in the auditorium that adds to the evening’s festivities.

The number of talented singers on stage is aweinspiring, and you’d be hardpressed to single them out, but I’ll try. Several performers

from last year’s production are back, including heartthrob recording artist Rex Smith (Billy Mack), Tomasina Abate (Karen), and Doug Kreeger (Harry), are among those who

give solid performances.

Huge kudos to the behind the scenes team who created a warm and welcoming world at the Wallis. They include director and adapter Anderson Davis, music supervisor Jesse Vargas, vocal designer AnnMarie Milazzo, musical stager Sumie Maeda, scenic designer Matthew Steinbrenner, lighting

designer Michael Berger, sound designer Ben Soldate, costume designer Steve Mazurek, video designer Aaron Rhyne, and the fantastic 15-piece orchestra.

The show is basically family-friendly, although be warned there are some naked body parts and suggestive actions in the filmed sequences, so maybe not great for kids under 10...just sayin’.

For fans of the film, this is a perfect kickoff for the holiday season. If you have never seen the movie, shame on you!

Many in the audience left the theater vowing to go home and watch the original film, so a whole new generation of “Love Actually” fans is in the making.

Democrats unveil charges in Trump impeachment

By Desert Star Staff US House Judiciary Panel chairman Jerry Nadler has announced that two articles of impeachment will be introduced against President Donald Trump, including one for abuse of power.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Nadler said Trump abused his power by pressuring Ukraine and that he has “declared himself above accountability.”

No one, not even the president, is above the law.

He said the second article of impeachment will be for obstruction of Congress.

The Judiciary Committee will meet later this week to consider the articles.

Nadler also claimed that lawmakers must “act now” because the integrity of the 2020 elections are “at stake.”

In a statement following the unveiling of the charges,

Trump’s 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale said impeachment was “too divisive” and Americans “don’t agree with this rank partisanship.”

The Democrats, he added, are “putting on this political theater because they don’t have a viable candidate for 2020, and they know it.”

Trump is now officially the fourth US president to face impeachment and, if impeached, would be the third to face a trial in the Senate.

Democrats launched impeachment proceedings on the back of whistleblower claims that Trump had tried to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to open a corruption probe into a gas company employing former VP Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.

They claim that Trump offered Zelensky a quid pro quo, offering military aid in return for an investigation that could

hurt Biden politically during the 2020 presidential campaign.

The first White House official to respond to the introduction of impeachment articles, Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney told the Wall Street Journal that the impeachment inquiry

was a “political process, not a legal process.”

On Twitter, Trump himself hit back, saying that the notion that he pressured Ukraine was “ridiculous” and that Nadler “knows that is not true.”

Groups Call Ruling a Win for Michigan’s Water, Democracy

By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. — Despite a legal victory against a major corporation, environmental and community groups are not letting their guards down when it comes to protecting Michigan’s water. The Michigan Court of Appeals last week ruled

Osceola Township had the right to deny a zoning permit to Nestle for a booster station to increase water extraction.

The company had argued local zoning officials were improperly influenced by public opposition. But Peggy Case, president of Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation, said

the court ruled that elected officials should be sensitive to residents’ concerns, and would be wrong to not take public opinion into account.

“It’s a beautiful ruling on democracy, on the rights of citizens to actually elect the people that they want and expect them to perform on

their behalf,” Case said.

The court also stated it was “erroneous” of the circuit court to rule Nestle’s water-bottling operation is an essential public service.

The company wants to increase pumping rates at its Evart well from 150-200 gallons per minute to more than 400 gallons per minute.

The permit to increase production still is awaiting a ruling in a Contested Case filed by Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation.

Nestle can appeal the case to the Michigan Supreme Court, or try to get the property rezoned.

Case observed the company wants the water, and she’s anticipating their next move.

“They were going to try to run trucks on these rural roads. There’s some possibility they might try to run another pipe,” she said. “So they have other options and, of course, we would attempt to counteract anything they might do to be even more

destructive to the environment than they already are.”

Since 2000, Nestle has extracted more than 4 billion gallons of water from Michigan. Case said her group has been struggling ever since to get the attention of local and state leaders.

“We just filed a complaint for the failure of the state to help us deal with Nestle’s grabbing of public water and forcing a small environmental group to spend buckets of money doing the kind of work that the state should be doing,” she said.

Meanwhile, a “Water Protection Package” was introduced in the Michigan House last week. It aims to clarify that the waters of the state are held in the public trust, and prevent Michigan’s waters from being privatized by corporations.

Driving Commutes Increase Stress, Risks to Worker Health

By Desert Star Staff More workers are stressed out before they even get to the office, according to a new survey of 2,800 workers conducted by the staffing firm Robert Half.

Half of the workers said driving to and from work is stressful. Stress has been linked to numerous negative long-term health impacts, and studies have shown long-distance commuters experience psychosomatic disorders at much higher rates than people with www.desertstarweekly.com

Eric Kimble, branch manager with the firm, said it doesn’t just affect workers’ health.

“It does impact bottom lines. It can impact productivity, it can impact morale,” Kimble said. “And at the end of the day, that’s something that businesses have to pay attention to.”

Among the 28 U.S. cities in the survey, respondents in Austin were the most stressed out about their trip to and from work, along with

drivers in Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix and San Diego.

Houston had the third-longest average commute time, at just under an hour, behind New York and Washington, D.C. Kimble said some businesses have turned to strategies such as telecommuting, while others are more reluctant, fearing unsupervised employees will be in their pajamas reorganizing their refrigerators on company time.

organizations can’t afford to ignore the situation facing workers and risk losing their best team members to other opportunities. Many companies are open to shifting official work hours, flexible scheduling and other ways to ease the stress of the rush-hour commute.

“Sort of staggered work times around busy commuting times; telecommuting is growing. Company-sponsored car-pooling is another thing we hear about, or discounted train or bus passes,” he said.

Kimble said a few organizations pay workers who are productive during commute times, as long as they have a laptop.

Workers clock in when they board the train in the morning and clock out when they step off at night.

The survey found nationally, workers spend more than 48 minutes commuting each day, and nearly 1 in 5 said commutes are more than an hour long.

Ratepayers Rebel Against Utility Fossil Fuel Investments

By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – Montanans plan to rally in Helena against Northwestern Energy’s 20-year plan to invest heavily in fossil fuels.

The Public Service

Commission holds two public hearings Monday on Northwestern Energy’s resource procurement plan, which includes its intention to run the Colstrip coal plant through 2042 and build

four natural gas plants.

It doesn’t include any investments in renewable energy sources.

Jeff Smith co-chairs the climate action group 350 Montana, which is organizing

the Ratepayers Rebellion Rally.

He notes the utility company’s vice president recently said all of Colstrip’s units would be retired “within a decade.”

“So, which is it?” he questions. “Is the Colstrip plant going to be open until 2042, or is the vice president correct in saying that Colstrip is going to close down within the decade? That’s a big issue.”

Most of Colstrip’s owners – utilities in Idaho, Oregon and Washington – are pulling out or predict they’ll stop relying on the plant within the next eight years.

Smith says more than 100 people are expected at the Helena rally, with some arriving on buses from Bozeman, Billings and Missoula, beginning at noon. The first PSC public hearing begins at 1:30 p.m.

Northwestern Energy says investment in Colstrip and natural gas is cheaper than in renewables.

Beyond Coal Campaign in Montana, says relying on fossil fuels is a dangerous gamble for the planet.

“The reality is, we are facing a climate crisis right now, and throwing new fossil fuels into the mix that we could get attached to as rate-paying customers for 20 or 30 years is really going backwards in terms of trying to address the crisis we’re facing,” he states.

Smith adds Northwestern Energy hasn’t done a comprehensive study of the cost of renewables. He maintains the economics of solar and wind look more favorable than either coal or natural gas.

“We’re a climate action group, and we think that they should give wind and solar in Montana – given the resources, the natural resources that we have – a fair shake,” he stresses.

But as we saw with the recent homicide at the Sunbrook Residential Care Facility, a license doesn’t necessarily mean your loved ones are safe.

“Everyone has come for a

piece of this pie, not everyone with the best intentions, unfortunately, and so, therefore, you want to find the reputable ones,” said Omni Senior Services Executive Director, Brett Shepard.

Under state law, background checks are required.

“They’re required for every employee. FBI background check, DOJ background checks, fingerprints. If you’re going into someone’s home,

they also have to be registered with the home care aid registry with the state,” said Lowry.

“Background checks are just the first step. I find that the administrator or owner of the home needs to do their due diligence.

Has the employee had their references checked? Has their employment history been verified?” said Shepard.

The elderly are among the most vulnerable population.

The incident took place as the Tesla CEO was pulling out of the parking lot of the highend Nobu restaurant, where he was dining with his girlfriend Grimes and other friends.

When experiencing a change in health, knowing when to visit the emergency room, understanding your care options, and having access to other resources available can save an unnecessary and time-consuming trip.

The number of hospital emergency departments has remained steady since 2001, while utilization has grown about 33 percent in the last decade. This means the time spent in the emergency room is getting longer. The California Health Care Foundation report, which tracked use over ten years, found the average stay for patients not admitted to the hospital was almost three hours in California. For patients being admitted to the hospital, they spent nearly six hours in the emergency room beforehand.

In fact, the Office of Statewide Planning and Development reported in 2017 that about 352,000 California visits ended after seeing a doctor, but before care was complete, as a result of crowded hospital emergency departments.

For life-threatening illnesses and injuries, you should always dial 911 or go to the emergency room. If you aren’t sure if a visit to the emergency room is appropriate, your insurance company may offer a nurse line on the back of your insurance card to help you determine where you should get care. You also contact your

health plan customer service department to find a nearby urgent care clinic or set up a time to see your primary care doctor. It’s essential to understand when a visit to the primary care doctor, urgent care or emergency room is the most appropriate.

A primary care doctor helps manage your health and provides the preventative care you may need. Your doctor can also treat minor illnesses and injuries—and refer you to a specialist if needed.

Urgent care offers treatment for non-emergent injury and illness, like allergies and the flu, asthma attacks, broken bones, and cuts requiring stitches. They are first-come, first-served, and provide a one-stop option for unscheduled, time-sensitive care.

Emergency rooms help people with life-threatening or dangerous conditions first.

The emergency department is recommended for things you can’t control, like bleeding that won’t stop, or if you lose consciousness or have trouble breathing. If you go there for a minor illness or injury,

you may have a long wait.

Once you identify a care option, the timing is really up to you. Along with medical cost savings, avoiding the emergency room for nonemergent health concerns can help build a long-term relationship with a primary care doctor who can provide preventative care, treat minor illnesses and injuries, connect you to specialists and understand medical history for improved health outcomes.

Whether you can schedule a visit with your primary doctor to address your health issue or it requires immediate emergency room attention, it is crucial to have your photo ID and insurance information ready (don’t leave home without it!). If you are

visiting the emergency room, be prepared, and have a list of medications you take on hand, a list of your allergies readily available, your phone and charger, and your health record. Emergency rooms also carry the potential for higher germ exposure, so don’t forget a medical face mask (check the front desk) and hand cleaner (usually available throughout the department).

Wildlife Bill Advancing in Congress

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK - More than a third of America’s fish and wildlife species are at increased risk of extinction, but a bill advancing in Congress this week could help.

The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act is scheduled for markup Thursday in the House Natural Resources Committee. According to Collin O’Mara, president and chief executive of the National Wildlife Federation, the bipartisan bill would provide more than $1.3 billion a year to implement federally approved wildlife conservation efforts.

“The goal,” he said, “is to invest in proactive, collaborative conservation in all 50 states and all the territories to try to save the full diversity of America’s wildlife.”

New York state has identified 366 “Species of Greatest Conservation Need,” 166 of which are designated as high priority.

The bill has more than 150

co-sponsors, including six members of the New York congressional delegation.

O’Mara said efforts to conserve wildlife species that are hunted or fished have been very successful, but few resources have been steered toward other species.

“So right now, we have populations of amphibians and reptiles, of songbirds – and grassland birds and forest birds, and shorebirds – that are plummeting,” he said, adding that more than 1,600 species are listed under the Endangered Species Act and another 150 are presumed extinct.

More than a decade ago, the federal government began requiring states to formulate wildlife action plans to qualify for small state wildlife grants.

O’Mara said states came up with some very good plans.

“The problem is they’re [an] unfunded mandate,” he said. “There’s never really been the resources put behind them

“As someone who was raised in the Quaker tradition, I find it extra appalling that this is happening in the holiday season, that we are taking food off the tables of our neighbors at the time when we are supposed to be at our very best selves and taking the very best care of our communities,” she states.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue points to the country’s low unemployment rate and the goal of moving people toward self-sufficiency as the reasons for the rule change.

The Agriculture Department estimates the change will save the government $5.5 billion over five years. It’s scheduled to go into place on Apr. 1, 2020.

The new rule affects able-bodied people ages 18 to 49 without dependents.

Morgan says about 24,000 Oregonians will be impacted and the rule will result in $18 million in lost revenue to places such as grocery retailers and agricultural producers, largely in rural areas.

“So of course, we are most interested and most centering those 24,000 people who may be affected, but do also want to mention that this is a larger benefit to the rural economies as a whole that will also go away,” she states.

Morgan says the rule could be challenged in the courts.

It’s one of three rule changes the Trump administration has proposed to SNAP. According to a study from the Urban Institute this week, those rules taken together would drop 3.7 million people from the program nationwide.

The finalized U.S. Department of Agriculture rule undoes the ability of states to issue waivers on the three-month limit for SNAP benefits to people who aren’t either working or in a training

program for 20 hours a week.

An estimated 688,000 people are expected to lose assistance because of the change.

Half of the workers said driving to and from work is stressful. Stress has been linked to numerous negative long-term health impacts, and studies have shown longdistance commuters experience psychosomatic disorders at much higher rates than people with shorter commutes.

“It does impact bottom lines. It can impact productivity, it can impact morale,” Kimble said. “And at the end of the day, that’s something that businesses have to pay attention to.”

Among the 28 U.S. cities in the survey, respondents in Austin were the most stressed out about their trip to and from work, along with drivers in

Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix and San Diego. Houston had the third-longest average commute time, at just under an hour, behind New York and Washington, D.C. Kimble said some businesses have turned to strategies such as telecommuting, while others are more reluctant, fearing unsupervised employees will be in their pajamas reorganizing their refrigerators on company time.

BLM Ordered to Redo Climate Reviews on Utah Oil Leases

in a rush to fulfill the Trump administration’s goal of “American energy dominance.”

“BLM realizes the error of their ways,” Dascalu-Joffe said. “Their rush to lease hundreds of thousands of acres completely violated the law which requires an in-depth analysis on the future impact of the development of oil and gas on those lease parcels.”

BLM officials have said once the new reviews are complete, they will issue a decision for each lease that will either cancel it, modify its terms or lift the suspension without any changes.

The leases were among about 240 the BLM issued from 2014 to 2018 under the National Environmental Policy Act. Dascalu-Joffe said one of the goals of the lawsuit was to change the way the bureau evaluated oil and gas leases.

“We want the agency to be able to do this analysis at a programmatic level as to how all of this leasing and the energy-dominance agenda

of the Trump administration is impacting the climate as a whole,” she said.

Landon Newell is an attorney for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.

He said the BLM is not doing a complete job of considering the effects of other environmental factors, such as wildlife, water quality or air quality.

“BLM has become so focused on getting the climate analysis right that it essentially punted on any analysis for these other resources,” Newell said; “which is really problematic for the agency and is creating an entirely new mess that the agency is going to have to deal with in the future.”

Newell said since the Trump administration began in 2017, the pace of selling access to public lands has accelerated after BLM officials were ordered to identify and remove regulations that were restricting the issuance of oil and gas leases.
