‘Fire and fury’ Trump vows to answer North Korea’s nuclear threats with ‘ fire and fury’

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has yet again called for tough and decisive action over the “dangers posed by North Korea,” while praising the UN’s solidarity over the crisis.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon is

reportedly reviewing missile restrictions with Seoul.

“North Korea best not make any more threats to the US. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen,” Trump said on Tuesday afternoon.

Trump’s statement comes three days after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously voted to impose a new round of sanctions on Pyongyang in response to its latest ballistic missile tests.

KMIR News Staff Desert Hot Springs, CA - An 8-year-old boy has drowned in a Desert Hot Springs resort swimming pool.

Family members tell KMIR News, he was Isaac Moore of Desert Hot Springs, a student at Cabot Yerxa Elementary School. “Isaac was swimming and the, next thing you know, he was drowning,” said his Great-Aunt, Juanita Price.

“Isaac was the love of the family; he was very gentle; he loved football; he loved his brother, his sister and his mom; he was just a precious child,” said Juanita Price.

Many family members and friends were celebrating a Sweet 16 at the Vista Ventana Spa & Resort. Isaac arrived only

minutes before the tragedy. “He had been in the pool probably for a couple of minutes; he’d just been there for a span of time for 10 minutes, but in those 10 minutes somehow he drowned. What I gained from this, is as parents we really have to be vigilant,” said Isaac’s Great-Uncle, Samuel Price.

Issac’s family is speaking out now, in hopes of preventing this from happening to another family. “There were lots of people out, there were lots of parents out, there were lots of children in the pool, some young people, teenagers and things in the pool but somehow no one noticed this was happening,” said Samuel Price.

“It hurts anytime I have to hear about a drowning that

could have been prevented, which in most cases, many of them could have been avoided,” said Aquatic Safety Expert Rene Hickey.

Hickey encourages swimmers to use what she calls a designated pool watcher. “Even in a public larger place where there’s multiple people if no one is around the pool to hear or see us; we’re alone,” said Hickey.

“Even though they’re there for fun, that water can be dangerous and that accidents can happen,” said Hickey.

Isaac would have been in third grade this coming school year. His family has started a fund for funeral expenses.

“After many years of failure, countries are coming together to finally address the dangers posed by North Korea,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning, adding that “we must be tough & decisive!”

Black Women Reach Equal Pay Day

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – Black women have to work seven months into 2017 to be paid the same amount of money white men took home in 2016, according to a new report by the Economic Policy Institute.

Valerie Wilson, director of the institute, notes black women face both racial and gender pay gaps, and says because the U.S. economy depends on consumer spending the impacts are far reaching.

“When we have a significant portion of our population and our workforce being under-compensated, that has a direct effect on the growth of our economy,” she explains.

Critics of wage-gap studies frequently point out that women tend

to be employed in jobs that pay less than those traditionally held by men.

But Wilson says that even after controlling for factors including occupation, years of experience, and education level, African-American women still are paid less than their white male counterparts.

Wilson says progress is slowing for black women, who were paid close to the same as white women in 1979.

But in 2016, white women’s wages grew to 76 percent of white men’s - according to the report - compared with 67 percent for black women.

PAUL, Minn. - As the new school year approaches, schools and students are trying to make sense of the new transgender toolkit released last week by the Minnesota Department of Education. The guidelines have drawn fire from opponents who claim they threaten parental rights and student privacy, while others say they’re needed to help protect transgender students from bullies.

Gary Amoroso, executive director of the Minnesota School Administrators Association, said the scope and purpose of the guidelines isn’t well understood, but what’s important is the

relationships families build with schools, especially on sensitive issues.

“The toolkit is not something that districts are required to use, and it’s not something that a district must either choose to opt into or opt out of,” he said. “It is simply a resource that’s available.”

Among the new guidelines: are the suggestions that school officials not assume the gender identity of a student and not separate classes into boy and girl groups.

State education officials say the toolkit is a response to schools’ requests for guidance in dealing with the growing number of

transgender students.

LGBTQ advocates such as Eva Wood, antiviolence program director for OutFront Minnesota, pushed hard for the guidelines.

“We have an obligation to create safe and welcoming learning environments for them, so I think it absolutely helps, but it doesn’t finish the goal,” she said. “The schools where trans kids tend to have more trouble are probably going to be the same schools that choose not to adopt it.”

According to the most recent Minnesota Student Survey, about 2.5 percent - or more than 20,000 high school students statewide - identify as transgender or gender diverse.

Minority Populations Drive Growth in Rural California

-- All but one rural county in California has added population over the past quarter century - and a new report shows that minorities are a big part of that boom.

Analysts from nonpartisan research firm Headwaters Economics looked at census data from 1980 to 2015 across the West and found that 99 percent of counties saw an increase in Hispanics, other people of color and foreignborn residents. Kelly Pohl, researcher and policy analyst and a co-author of the report, said Sierra County, north of Lake Tahoe, lost 2 percent of its total population - but an influx of minority residents has been a stabilizing force.

“In places where overall population is decreasing, minorities are slowing that trend of shrinking communities,

and helping to sustain local economies and keep school districts open,” Pohl said.

As of 2014, Hispanics became the largest ethnic group in the Golden State, which now has the sixthlargest economy in the world.

All but one of California’s rural counties are growing, many due to an increase in outdoor recreation and tourism.

Calaveras County’s total population is up 116 percent, with many newcomers working at the dozens of newly legal marijuana growing operations that have popped up in recent years.

Pohl said that minority families are particularly beneficial to towns with an aging general population.

Segal, of the Steven G. Segal Insurance Agency in Sherman Oaks, observed there is “too much exposure both to the association and the individual unit owner.” John Sinner, of the John R. Sinner Insurance Agency in Alhambra, disfavors bare walls insurance, because “It leaves the responsibility of proper interior insurance on the owners.” Sinner said if a unit owner had insufficient interior coverage, the association might have a damaged unit left only partially restored.

Joel Meskin, Managing Director of McGowan Program Administrators, a national agency headquartered in Ohio, also does not recommend bare walls insurance, questioning whether unit owners will obtain their own HO6 insurance policies. He said further “I have much more confidence in the association taking care of the issues, and I think the [cost of] insurance obtained by the association will be ultimately

However, Michael Berg of the Berg Insurance Agency in Lake Forest, offered a differing view: “Bare walls is the most equitable sharing of the risk of damage to interior property.

It most closely aligns with the maintenance and repair responsibilities of the HOA and the unit owner.” Steven S. Grane, of Alante Insurance Services in Irvine, said a bare walls policy “eliminates multiple claims against the HOA master policy. The more claims, the higher the premium.”

Is the total cost of all the individual HO6 policies and HOA “bare walls” insurance less expensive than a more comprehensive HOA policy?

John Sinner believes it might not be, and could cost more.

Steven Segal agrees, saying the increased cost to each owner may be more than the difference between “bare walls” and full HOA coverage. Per

Michael Berg, the breakeven point will depend on the size of the insurance and how much the carrier is charging for coverage of property attached to unit interiors. However, Timothy Cline of the Cline Insurance Agency in West Los Angeles said that “simply adding an endorsement that broadens (“walls in”) or narrows the scope (“bare walls”) has virtually no impact on the rate.” Cline said the rate is more affected by the amount of property coverage.

The experts agreed that individual unit owners should have HO6 policies, regardless of the association’s insurance approach.

To save money on insurance premiums, Segal and Sinner recommended associations obtain a modification, or “endorsement,” to their policy which removes floor and wall coverings from the association insurance coverage.

All this brings three conclusions. First, HOAs should discuss the costs and benefits of each alternative with their insurance broker and legal counsel. Second, condominium owners should have their own individual HO6 policies, regardless of what their HOA does (or doesn’t). Finally, one approach does not fit all – each association’s approach should be tailored to its needs and unique characteristics.

The cannabis market in North America reached $6.7 billion by the end of 2016, and is projected to grow to more than $20 billion by 2021. Thus, the question is, “How can I be a part of the Boom?”

This is a new frontier in investing, while some investors concerned about the mixed legal status, great opportunities are being created by those companies providing services to these cannabis producers.

One of the more exciting facets of the industry itself is that there are just numerous investment opportunities.

As with every industry, this industry needs an infrastructure.

It needs technology, and that technology is not just advertising, but more industrial technology, similar to what is seen in more mature industries.

Product development, industrial development, biotech, and consultative services to other related industries (tobacco through cannibalization, alcohol through cannibalization, as well as the pharmaceutical industry) are all in demand.

Recalling the California Gold Rush, more sustainable businesses grew from business supporting the miners and their needs than the fortunes made from Gold, itself. In fact, some of America’s greatest industrialists got their start in the Gold Rush. Phillip Armour, who would later found a meatpacking empire in Chicago, made a fortune operating the sluices (a sliding gate) that controlled the flow of water into the rivers being mined. Before John Studebaker built one of America’s great automobile fortunes, he manufactured wheelbarrows for Gold Rush miners. And two entrepreneurial bankers named Henry Wells and William Fargo moved west to open an office in San Francisco, an enterprise that soon grew to become one of America’s premier banking institutions.

One of the biggest mercantile success stories was that of Levi Strauss. A German-born

tailor, Strauss arrived in San Francisco in 1850 with plans to open a store selling canvas tarps and wagon coverings to the miners. After hearing that sturdy work pants—ones that could withstand the punishing 16-hour days regularly put in by miners—were more in demand, he shifted gears, opening a store in downtown San Francisco that would eventually become a manufacturing empire, producing Levi’s denim jeans. Just as in Gold Rush, the businesses supporting the Cannabis industry offer great investment opportunities.

Cannabis businesses still does not have access to financial services. It remains a very cash-intensive business, which puts them at risk of violating anti-money laundering regulations. Some relief of financial management has come from Partner Colorado Credit Union who created Safe Harbor Services LLC to offer savings and checking accounts, specifically to the cannabis industry.

Use of digital currency and distribution ledgers may be the primary form of payment and purchase for the Cannabis industry. Bitcoins and altcoins are digital cryptocurrency, in which users remain anonymous and currency is not controlled

by any country, which makes international payments much easier. They are outside of control of banks and not tied to the Federal Reserve.

Distributed ledgers, like blockchain and Ethereum, have potential to ease some of the cash flow pressure, and several altcoins have popped up that serve this industry, including PotCoin, MarijuanaCoin and CannabisCoin. Blockchain is a public ledger of all Bitcoin transactions that have ever been executed. The Bitcoin transactions are recorded similarly to how a bank would record a transaction.

The technological and business changes to relieve monetary pressure are only just starting to take place, which presents a huge opportunity for innovation. With the volumes of capital at play and the speed at which the industry is growing, we expect that as the industry matures we’ll be seeing a growth of many industries around it.

“Drive For Our Lives” Defends Healthcare in Phoenix, Tucson

today and Tucson tomorrow.

“Drive For Our Lives” is part of an 18-city nationwide tour that started last weekend with a day of action known as “Our Lives on the Line.”

By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – Montana is making progress in helping people prevent cancer but still has room to improve, according to a new report.

An annual report from the American Cancer Society’s “Cancer Action Network” gives the state passing grades for its smoke-free laws in buildings and for increasing access to Medicaid. But the state still has a higher-thanaverage smoking rate. One of the bedrocks to cancer prevention is making sure kids never start using tobacco.

Kristen Page Nei, the government relations director for the Cancer Action Network in Montana, says state lawmakers can help accomplish this goal in three ways.

“First, make sure

that there’s a smoke-free environment,” she says. Two, to adequately fund a statewide tobacco prevention program that also has an evidencebased cessation program.

And three, to frequently and significantly increase the price on all tobacco products.”

Nei says electronic cigarettes are a concern in the state right now because there’s no law against smoking them in buildings, and she believes they normalize smoking.

Montana also hasn’t raised its tax on tobacco since 2005.

Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable disease and death.

Nei suggests Montana should also restrict access for young people to indoor tanning beds. She says they significantly increase a person’s risk of cancer.

Bus tour spokesman Tim Hogan says voters need to stay vigilant.

“We’re hearing from healthcare providers, saying this would be sabotaging those markets,” he says. “It would be introducing severe uncertainty, something he’s already doing by playing chicken, saying, ‘Maybe I will, maybe I won’t, cut funding.’”

The “Drive For Our Lives” tour stops in Phoenix at 10 A.M. this morning at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center. Speakers will include State Rep. Kelli Butler and several health-care activists.

The Tucson event is Saturday at 10 A.M. at Planned Parenthood and features Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby

Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly.

Sen. Jeff Flake and all of Arizona’s Republican congressmen except Andy Biggs voted for repeal. Hogan says members of the bus tour are concerned that the GOP could revive its healthcare proposal at any time.

“Until there is a Democratically-controlled House of Representatives or Senate, I would not assume that healthcare repeal is dead,” he adds.

It’s estimated that 400,000 Arizonans would lose health insurance over the next ten years if Medicaid were to be cut drastically as part of an ACA repeal.

But ACA opponents say repeal is needed to bring down premiums and free people from the government mandate to buy healthcare.

This month, a new Missouri law goes into effect that increases the threshold for filing discrimination cases against small businesses and industries. Previously, discrimination only had to be a “contributing” factor under the Missouri Human Rights Act to be unlawful. Now, it has to be the “motivating” factor for a lawsuit to proceed against an employer.

The NAACP Missouri Chapter President Rod Chapel says this isn’t about political ideology.

“It’s not a political debate on whether or not people can have human rights,” he says.

“That’s not something that can be up for debate. What

we have is a departure from morality - now that can have political consequences.”

The law also limits damages awarded for employment discrimination to no more than back pay and interest on back pay.

Supporters of the law say it brings Missouri antidiscrimination practices into line with other states.

Chapel contends people who believe that have been sold a bill of goods.

Chapel points out that what’s outlined in Senate Bill 43 isn’t the law of the land in the United States, nor does he think it’s in line with the nation’s moral code. He believes the issue comes down to some key questions:

“Do Missouri citizens have the ability to get accurate information from people who they’ve entrusted with their leadership?” he asks.

“And are those leaders not only telling them the truth but actually reviewing the facts themselves?”

The Missouri NAACP chapter issued a travel advisory in the state in June, when Senate Bill 43 was first signed by Gov. Eric Greitens.

The advisory urges African-American travelers to exercise extreme caution after a state attorney general’s report said black drivers in Missouri were 75 percent more likely to be pulled over than whites.

Strong Job Growth Continues Even as Labor Market Tightens

Comment on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Situation Report By Brian Schaitkin, Senior Economist, The Conference Board

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - Employment increased by 209,000 jobs in July after increasing by 231,000 jobs in June.

The July employment report proved that the economy remains capable of creating 180,000 jobs per month even with the unemployment rate falling back to 4.3 percent, suggesting that the number of potential workers sitting on the sideline continues to shrink.

The good news on employment is consistent with strengthening economic growth, including from investment, entering the second half of 2017. More jobs and more investment are both signs that stronger global economic conditions may be lifting the ongoing expansion into a higher gear.

Where are all of these additional workers coming from? More than two-thirds of jobs created during the

past 18 months, and indeed since the Great Recession ended, have gone to college educated workers, even though this group constitutes slightly more than one-third of those employed. With employers competing keenly for the same pool of workers, wage growth, at least for the most desirable workers, may start accelerating again soon.

By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee skews older than the nation overall, and overall, the state’s disability rates are higher in rural communities, according to Census data analyzed by the nonpartisan think tank ThinkTennessee.

Shanna Hughey, the group’s president, says she hopes ThinkTennessee’s study of the population data gives state lawmakers access to information that helps them help their constituents.

“So knowing who Tennesseans are, and who will be in decades to come,

is a really important part of that,” she states. “We’re hoping this information honestly inspires legislators from urban and rural areas to work together on issues that will affect them both.”

According to the report, 1 in 7 Tennesseans is older than 65, which is older than the national average of just above 15 percent. Additionally Hughey says ThinkTennessee found diverse populations in rural and urban areas.

Understanding that the state has an older population, and a high percentage of people with a disability living

in rural communities, may help justify investments in transportation or modifications of voting options.

“We know that these populations might benefit from policies like transit options or no-fault absentee voting or increased health care access, and those can be really important things both in our rural areas and in our urban ones,” Hughey states.

According to the data, 1 in 6 people living in rural communities in the state has a disability.

Gender gap is natural, Google employee says in 10-page ‘internally viral’ memo

By Desert Star Staff A 10-page memo that went viral inside Google and has been obtained by Gizmodo sees a Google software engineer arguing that women are underrepresented in tech not due to bias, but rather because of inherent psychological differences from men.The memo has been shared repeatedly on the internal network and Google+. Motherboard first reported that the memo existed, and Gizmodo published it in its entirety.

is essentially the personal opinion of a male software engineer working for Google.

In the document, the employee argues that he “values diversity and inclusion, am not denying that sexism exists, and don’t endorse using stereotypes.” However, some topics, he adds, now involve “shaming into silence.”

“This silencing has created an ideological echo chamber where some ideas are too sacred to be honestly discussed,” and the lack of discussion brings about “the most extreme and authoritarian elements of this

ideology,” the memo says.

This needs to change.”Following the heated debate that surrounded the memo both inside and outside Google, the company’s new Vice President of Diversity, Integrity & Governance, Danielle Brown, issued a statement saying, “Many of you have read an internal document shared by someone in our engineering organization, expressing views on the natural abilities and characteristics of different genders, as well as whether one can speak freely of these things at Google. And like many of you, I found that it advanced incorrect assumptions about gender.

US vs hackers: America’s crusade against cybercrime

By Desert Star Staff Cyberattacks across the world have grown everlarger in scale, inflicting billions of dollars of damage – and the US is spearheading the quest to make hackers pay, wherever they are, sometimes with exceedingly tough jail terms.

The US government is pulling no punches when it comes to prosecuting cyber criminals, often seeking extradition orders and, in most cases, dedicating countless man hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars relentlessly pursuing some of the world’s most notorious hackers.

Its latest catch, though, is a reputed white hat hacker — that is, a ‘good’ security expert whose hacking bears no ill intent. He helped stop a global cyberattack in its tracks, potentially saving the global economy millions of dollars in the process – and is now charged in a separate malware-related case.

Marcus Hutchins aka ‘MalwareTech’ (2017) Marcus Hutchins, 23, the young British cybersecurity expert who discovered the kill switch that stopped the global WannaCry ransomware attack, was arrested on August 2 by the FBI at Las Vegas International Airport as he was about to board a flight back to his home in London.

He has been charged in connection with “creating and distributing the Kronos banking trojan,” first discovered in 2014, which targets banking systems and harvests credit card data and private customer information once an email attachment has been opened on a target computer.

“He admitted he was the author of the code of Kronos malware and indicated he sold it,” prosecutor Dan Cowhig told the federal court.

Hutchins is accused of collaborating with an unnamed co-defendant who maintained and advertised the malware on the now defunct AlphaBay marketplace on the

Dark Web. The Malware was sold for $3,000 according to the indictment, though IBM researchers saw it advertised with a $7,000 price tag.

Hutchins has posted the $30,000 bail but Judge Nancy Koppe ordered him to surrender his passport and he has been banned from using devices with internet access upon his release on August 7, according to his attorney, Adrian Lobo, as cited by Reuters.

Lauri Love (2013 - present) Lauri Love, 32, of dual Finnish-British citizenship is alleged to have hacked the US Federal Reserve Bank, NASA, the US Army, the FBI, and the Environmental Protection Agency, and faces extradition to the US with multiple indictments for arrest spanning three different court districts in three different states.Love was initially arrested on October 25, 2013 and again on July 15 2015. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) tried to force Love to hand over his passwords and encryption keys so it could access his computers that were seized following his initial arrest.

He is currently appealing his extradition, granted by Westminster Magistrates’ Court in September 2016, with a hearing scheduled for November of this year.

Love faces up to 99 years in prison, and would be the first British citizen to be extradited to the US for cyber crimes.

Russian Roman Seleznev aka ‘Track2’/’2pac’/’nCuX’ (2009 - 2013) The son of a Russian member of parliament, Seleznev, 32, was sentenced to 27 years in prison, a US record for cybercrime, for his role in hacking thousands of US businesses and operating an identity theft ring based in southeast Asia.

He was arrested by the US Secret Service in the Maldives in July 2014.

resulted in up to $169 million losses for the 500 businesses that were successfully hacked, Reuters reported.

Moscow viewed Seleznev’s arrest and extradition as ‘kidnapping.’ A Foreign Ministry statement at the time said there had been no contacts with the Russian authorities normally required when a Russian citizen is being extradited. The Maldives don’t have an extradition agreement with the US, but local police helped the Secret Service get him anyway.

“This message the United States sent today is not the right way to show Vladimir Putin, Russia or any other government in this world how justice works in a democracy,” Seleznev wrote in a statement following his sentencing.

Seleznev also faces separate federal charges which are pending in both Nevada and Georgia.

Vladimir Drinkman (2005 - 2012) Vladimir Drinkman, 34, of Syktyvkar, Russia and four co-conspirators allegedly stole more than 160 million credit card numbers in what US authorities described at the time as the “largest known data breach conspiracy ever prosecuted.”

He and his crew hacked into the databases of companies such as NASDAQ, 7-Eleven, Carrefour, JCP, Hannaford, Heartland, Wet Seal, Commidea, Dexia, JetBlue, Dow Jones, Euronet,

Visa Jordan, Global Payment, Diners Singapore, and Ingenicard, among others.

Drinkman was arrested in the Netherlands on June 28, 2012 and extradited to New Jersey in 2015.

“This hacking ring’s widespread attacks on American companies caused serious harm and more than $300 million in losses to people and businesses in the United States,” said Assistant Attorney General Caldwell.

Drinkman faces up to 30 years in federal prison.

He was originally due to be sentenced in June but the verdict has been delayed until September 22.

He posted unofficial emails sent to former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as well as artwork produced by former US President George W. Bush, including self-portraits in the bathtub, online.He stands accused of hacking “into the email and social media accounts of high-profile victims, including a family member of two former U.S. presidents, a former U.S. Cabinet member, a former member of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and a former presidential advisor,” according to a federal indictment.

It is unclear what kind of punishment awaits Lehel if found guilty.

‘We’re after leakers, not journalists’ DOJ defends crackdown on leaks of classified info

By Desert Star Staff US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has said his office is to “respond appropriately” to the issue of increasing leaks in the US, and warned there is a possibility that reporters, not just their sources, might be held accountable.

“We don’t prosecute journalists for doing their jobs. We look at the facts and circumstances of each case and we determine whether somebody has committed a crime and whether it’s appropriate to hold them accountable for it,” Rosenstein said in an interview on ‘Fox News Sunday.’However, he

said, there might be some exceptions where a reporter might become a suspect in a leak case as well as its source.

“Generally speaking, reporters who publish information are not committing a crime. But there might be a circumstance where they do. You know, I haven’t seen any of those today, but I wouldn’t rule it out in the event that there were a case where a reporter was purposely violating the law, then they might be a suspect as well,” he said.

A new unit within the FBI has been created “to focus on those leaks,” he said, adding that the government

is “going to devote whatever resources are necessary to get them under control.”

“Criminal prosecution isn’t the only way to prevent leaks, but it’s an important part of the solution,” he said.

“We’re after the leakers, not the journalist,” the deputy attorney general claimed, adding that the Justice Department has not yet revised any policies with regard to reporters.Earlier this week, his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, described the issue of leaks in the country as a threat to national security, warning of a possible crackdown on those who are spreading

information illegally.“We respect the important role that the press plays and will give them respect, but it is not unlimited,” Sessions warned, promising to step up legal procedures to hold journalists accountable for disseminating sensitive information.

“One of the things we are doing is reviewing policies affecting media subpoenas” which would force journalists to testify in court and potentially produce evidence, Sessions explained.

Under the US’ shield law, journalists are protected under “reporters’ privilege,” which gives them the legal right not to reveal confidential sources or other information that would hinder news gathering activity.

The attorney general also revealed that the Justice Department has tripled the number of investigations into unauthorized leaks, charging four people with crimes so far.

The department has received almost as many criminal referrals over leaks as over the past three years combined, Sessions told reporters Friday.

Sessions also noted that it is the responsibility of government agency workers to stop leaking information which concerns national security.

“This culture of leaking must stop,” Sessions stated.

US Army bans Chinese drones over ‘operational risks

By Desert Star Staff The Pentagon has ordered an Army-wide ban on all consumer drones made by Chinese manufacturer DJI, citing “cyber vulnerabilities associated with DJI products.”

The US Army has been ordered to “halt use of all DJI products,” according to an August 2 memo from Lieutenant General Joseph Anderson, the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations.

Additionally, the Army was ordered to “cease all use, uninstall all DJI applications, remove all batteries/storage media from devices, and secure equipment for follow on direction,” Anderson wrote in the memo.The order applies to all DJI Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) as well as any products that use electrical components or software, including “flight computers, cameras, radios, batteries, speed controllers, GPS units, handheld control stations, or devices with DJI software applications installed.”The memo, which was obtained

No specific information was provided on what those threats and risks were.

An Army spokesperson later confirmed the order with the Washington Times.

“We can confirm that guidance was issued; however, we are currently reviewing the guidance and cannot comment further at this time,” the spokesperson said.

In the past, the off-theshelf DJI drones were the most widely used by the Army and the most popular consumer drones in the world, according to Drone Industry Insights.

The Army had issued over 300 Airworthiness Releases, authorizing the use of DJI products on aerial missions,

according to the memo.

Michael Perry, DJI’s Public Relations Manager, sent an email to Small UAS News, saying that they had not been informed about the decision.

“We are surprised and disappointed to read reports of the US Army’s unprompted restriction on DJI drones as we were not consulted during their decision,” Perry said. “We’ll be reaching out to the US Army to confirm the memo and to understand what is specifically meant by ‘cyber vulnerabilities.’”

The Army is considering issuing a statement about the policy change, Army spokesman Dov Schwartz told Reuters.

DJI is estimated to have

secured around 70 percent of the global and consumer market for drones, according to Reuters. Analysts at Goldman Sachs estimate that the UAS market will be worth $100 billion by 2020.

They added that the largest market for drones is and will continue to be the military.

Brett Velicovich, a former Army intelligence soldier who runs Expert Drones, told Defense One that the memo “could have a huge impact on DJI.” “There are US special operators in Syria using DJI products,” Velicovich said. “So I get it. I’m glad [the Army is] finally doing something about this.”

By John Locher And John Rogers NIPTON, Calif. - Now that one of the nation’s largest cannabis companies has bought the entire California desert town of Nipton, a question remains: Will the new owners rename the place Potsylvania?

The name Weed already belongs to an old mill town in Northern California.

American Green Inc. announced Thursday it is buying all 80 acres of Nipton, which includes its Old Weststyle hotel, a handful of houses, an RV park and a coffee shop. Its plans are to transform the old Gold Rush town into what it calls “an energy-independent, cannabisfriendly hospitality destination.”

The town’s current owner, Roxanne Lang, said the sale is still in escrow, but confirmed American Green is the buyer. She declined to reveal price before the sale closes, but noted she and her late husband, Gerald Freeman, listed the property at $5 million when they put

Cannabis company plans to turn desert town into pot paradise

“I think he would find a lot of humor in that,” she finally said, adding that as a Libertarian Freeman had no problem with people using marijuana, and as a proponent of green power he’d be all in favor of energy independence. Over the years he’d installed a solar farm himself that provides much of the tiny town’s electricity.

American Green says it plans to expand that farm and also bottle and sell cannabisinfused water from Nipton’s plentiful aquifer, joint moves that would make the town green in more ways than one.

The buyers are also reaching out to edibles manufacturers and other pot-industry businesses, hoping they’ll be interested in relocating to Nipton and bringing jobs with them.

The small hotel has become a popular destination with desert aficionados and fans of the Old West, even though it’s located so close

to a major rail line that moves freight between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City that guests are handed earplugs with their room keys.

Carl Cavaness, who works at the hotel, said Thursday the sale caught him by surprise. He said he hopes the new owners will let him and his wife stay.

“We like the quiet and solitude,” the 53-yearold handyman said.

‘Shout Sister Shout!’ Rocks the Pasadena Playhouse

She was born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas in 1915 and became the gospel’s first superstar, the preeminent crossover figure of its “golden age.” Eventually her flamboyance, skill on the guitar and rhythmic showmanship influenced artists like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Johnny Cash.

Not bad, not bad at all.

life in “Shout Sister Shout,” currently playing at the Pasadena Playhouse through Sunday, August 20th. Their show is based on Gayle Wald’s book “Shout Sister Shout: The Untold Story of Rock and Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe.” It begins with a rousing musical number somewhere in the nether world—somewhere between heaven and earth. It turns out that Rosetta (Tracy Nicole Chapman) is waiting for God to bring her inside the Pearly Gates. Suddenly, a mighty voice informs her that she must return to earth to save the soul of Isaiah (Logan Charles) who, to her disdain, is a disheveled

looking white kid who looks like a bum. The voice of God gives her 24 hours to share her life story with him in order to give him hope and a reason to live. Since it’s God talking, she complies reluctantly. Isaiah isn’t impressed either, but he does remember that his mother had loved Rosetta’s music—her favorite song being “Jericho” which Tharpe also wrote.

Opioid Crisis Impeding Reunification for Ohio Families

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – When a child is removed from their home, the ultimate goal is to get them back with their families. But reunification is becoming increasingly difficult as an influx of kids enter care due to the opioid epidemic.

Paula Davis, the associate director of the East Region for the with Franklin County Children’s Services, says a child cannot stay in foster care for longer than 12 out of 22 months, which doesn’t necessarily align with a parent’s treatment for drug addiction.

“A lot of times we are fighting the clock,” she says.

“Because we have to have a permanent plan for these children within that time frame.

As more and more parents are fighting this epidemic it’s taking longer to get children home. And think we’re probably going to see an increase

in permanent custody or in relative care as a result.”

The average amount of time spent in foster care is about 13 months, says Davis. And of the over 24,000 children who exited foster care in Ohio in 2016, just 4,800 were reunified with their families and about 3,000 went to live with a kinship provider.

Wendi Turner, the executive director, of the Ohio Family Care Association, explains it’s in the best interest of the child to get them back living with their parents, as long as conditions are safe.

And she says getting to that point often takes the work of dedicated foster parents.

“It’s extremely important for foster parents who want to make a difference in a child’s life to be that gap, to be that person that will be able to give that child a safe environment so that hopefully that family can heal and become healthier

“There is currently a limit on the warhead size and missiles that South Korea can have and yes, it is a topic under active consideration here,” Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis stated on Monday, as quoted by Reuters.

“I would tell you that we would be favorably inclined to do anything which furthers the defense capabilities of South Korea and we certainly have seen our alliance change and adapt over time before,” Davis said.

Groups Praise Decision to Leave Grand Canyon Parashant Alone

By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX -- People who prize Arizona’s public lands are breathing a sigh of relief that Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument is off the chopping block - after the feds announced Friday that no changes will be made.

There are 26 national monuments under review, and many feared Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke would recommend that Grand Canyon Parashant be downsized, as he did with Bear’s Ears Monument in Utah. Mike Quigley, state director for The Wilderness Society in Arizona, said he’s relieved at the decision but worries about the fate of the remaining monuments.

“Unfortunately, there are other monuments in Arizona including Vermilion Cliffs, Sonoran Desert and Ironwood

Forest National Monuments and others across the country that are equally deserving of such protection and still at risk,” Quigley said.

In late April, President Donald Trump ordered a review of all national monuments of more than 1 million acres that were created since 1996, with an eye to protecting the smallest area possible. Opponents worry that any lands taken from the monuments could be opened up for ranching, logging or oil and gas development.

Millions of Americans expressed their support for the monuments during the public comment period that ended in July. Quigley criticized the review process as too opaque, and said he hopes all the remaining monuments will be left untouched.

Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument’s pristine cliffs are notable for their fossils and human relics.

Britain’s Alan Ayckbourn, earns his Pantheon honor for his prodigious comedy output and brilliance in England.

American playwright Ken Ludwig, is currently the country’s reigning genius of comedy/farce, a specific form of comedy that requires practitioners that are equal to its source material. Theatre audiences are most familiar with Ludwig’s two hilarious Tony Award-winning farce productions: “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Crazy for You”; the latter running for five

years on Broadway.

His canon of comedies and plays include: “Moon over Buffalo”, “Falsettos”, “The Games Afoot”, “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, “, and “Twentieth Century”, among some twenty other plays. There is usually a Ken Ludwig play being performed every night of the year throughout the world, according to Samuel French, Inc. who represents him in the world of theatre.

San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre has the honor of mounting the World Premiere of Ludwig’s newest comedy/ farce “Robin Hood”, deftly directed by longtime stage and TV veteran Jessica Stone.

Robin Hood, the character, embodies all that appeals to the romantic notion that the world loves a hero and his struggle to win his young maiden. It also celebrates those waging the good fight in the battle to right the wrongs that take place in

all societies. In Robin Hood, the stories of heroic figures emerged from the troubadours and story tellers of 600 years ago. The quixotic knight errant Don Quixote, created by Miguel de Cervantes in 1605, is cut from the same cloth as Robin Hood. Both characters, one young and one old, are righting the wrongs as they find them.

Ludwig gathers all the Robin Hood stories, myths, and legends, and lovingly and absurdly fashions them into a comedy/farce production that honors the original intention of those unknown writers and their quests for better life for all by delivering a hilarious and entertaining evening in the theatre via the vehicle of comedy/farce. If you don’t know the story and legend of Robin Hood then you must have grown up living in a cave. Google it!

When I read that the production would be mounted in the Sheryl and Harvey White venue, my first reaction was how will that iconic adventure story fit into the ‘round confines’ of the White Theatre? Puck was right when he stated ‘what fools these mortals be’ (Me). Director Stone leads the skillful creative team of: Scenic Designer Tim Mackabee, who brilliantly solves the space staging issues of recreating Sherwood Forest with its trees and streams, the Castle of Prince John, and all the other locations so well remembered

by the 1938 movie starring Errol Flynn. I didn’t need to worry. Mackabee’s creative and terrific design works.

And so do the costumes created by Gregg Barnes. His Medieval period designs are colorful on the Nobles and appropriate for the archer/ soldiers, and rough-looking for Robin’s cohorts. The lighting design by Jason Lyons (no relation) enhances the moods and the action (yes, there are action scenes, but it helps to have a vivid imagination – remember, it’s a comedy/ farce performed by a cast of eight talented actors). Fitz Patton is responsible for the original music and sound design, and Jacob GrigoliaRosenbaum nicely stages the sword-fighting sequences.

And, now for the actors who bring Ludwig’s ‘Robin Hood’ yarn to life. This audience-pleasing production is a true ensemble effort by a cast of professional comedy/farceurs who know their way around funny material and how to perform it to the hilt. Everyone is always in the moment, strutting their stuff with flair and a sense of sincerity, It’s a pleasure to watch them create their magic under the direction and vision of the innovative Ms. Stone.

Hood legend. Daniel Reece portrays Robin Hood. Mr. Reece makes for a somewhat less roguish, but nonetheless, a dashing, earnest Robin who always rises to the occasion.

Meredith Garretson as Marian, is more like a take charge, refreshing Joan of Arc Marion, as opposed to Olivia de Havilland’s shy and compliant Lady Marian. A cautionary tip: never underestimate the power of a redheaded Maid Marian.

Reece and Garretson make a wonderful on-stage pair.

Officer escapes Las Vegas shootout unharmed as bullet hits his gun belt

By Desert Star Staff Las Vegas police have released footage of a Tuesday shootout. In a scene worthy of an action movie, a suspect whipped out a gun on the

two officers – one of whom escaped unharmed thanks to a sturdy gun belt.

Officers responded to a call about a suspiciouslooking vehicle and when

they interviewed the occupant, he opened fire, hitting both officers.

The person who made the call to the police claimed that their house had been

burgled two days prior and that they had tracked their stolen cell phone to the location, according to an official police statement.As the two responding officers interviewed the suspect, later identified as Miguel Salas, 25, he began acting suspiciously and attempted to start his vehicle and flee the scene several times. After refusing to comply with multiple requests to exit his vehicle, he opened fire on the officers with a handgun.Both officers returned fire while taking cover and requested armed backup to deal with the situation.

By Desert Star Staff MCALLEN, Texas – A coalition of immigration and conservation groups is planning a major protest over plans to build a portion of the border wall in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Trump administration already has begun site preparations for a 74-mile stretch of the wall in Hidalgo and Starr counties that would block much of the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.

Scott Nicol, co-chair of the Sierra Club’s Borderlands Campaign, says even though

the refuge is a haven for endangered species and rare birds, there are few legal remedies to stop the project.

“They have the authority, or at least the secretary of Homeland Security has the authority, to waive any laws – not just environmental laws,” Nicol states. “And so, when they do that, the Endangered Species Act doesn’t matter anymore. Anything they feel like they’re probably going to violate, they just waive and they don’t have to worry about any legal repercussions.”

Congress has yet to fully fund the wall, but Homeland Security has shifted money from other programs to begin the project as early as November.

Nicol says the wall, meant to stop illegal immigration and drug smuggling, would block endangered ocelots from crossing the Rio Grande and interfere with the migration of more than 400 species of birds.

Nicol says the wall would fill a gap in a border fence left a decade ago by the Bush administration designed to

protect Rio Grande access to regional wild lands.

“Santa Anna National Wildlife Refuge is in the middle of a larger wildlife refuge system, the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, which runs along the Rio Grande and creates a wildlife corridor for federally endangered ocelots,” Nicol stresses.

Nicol says he and other advocates believe there is no scientific or rational basis for building the wall.

But while the Win Butler-led group’s latest effort lacks the anthemic firepower of the band’s earliest efforts (2004’s “Funeral” and 2007 sophomore effort “Neon Bible”), it is simply ludicrous to ignore the joys of the Canadian troupe’s 2017 effort.

An intelligent exploration of today’s obsession with the here and now, as well as a growing detachment of deep human connections courtesy of a dependence on technology and instant gratification make this an important album.

Society’s obsession with remaining young at any cost is artfully explored on the pulsating “Peter Pan,” and there are other points across the 13-track disc where the dangers of celebrity culture, empty nightlife and suicide are explored amidst dance- and disco-minded soundscapes.

Croce has fully escaped all but passing nods to his late father Jim Croce (who sadly died in a plane crash in September 1973 at the age of 30). On his ninth full-length album “Just Like Medicine,” A. J. Croce puts his virtuoso talents at the keyboard and strong lead vocals on display in the service of 10 soulful songs that recall the sounds of Memphis and New Orleans. DOJ: Miami no longer a ‘sanctuary city’

By Desert Star Staff Florida’s most populated county is no longer considered to be a “sanctuary jurisdiction” by the Justice Department.

As a result, Miami-Dade will be eligible for certain federal grant money denied to other immigration “sanctuary cities.”

On Friday, the Department of Justice sent a letter to MiamiDade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez (R), notifying him that the county was in compliance with federal immigration requirements and would therefore be eligible for Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance

However, the letter sent by Alan Hanson, acting assistant attorney general, also warned that the Justice Department will continue to monitor the county to ensure they remain in compliance with the rules.

On Saturday, Gimenez wrote a memo to the Miami Board of County Commissioners, informing them that the county will spend the $481,347 JAG grant to “enhance the [MiamiDade Police Department’s] intelligence gathering and police operations with investments in technology

and specialized equipment.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has threatened to cut federal funding from any cities that do not comply with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests. statement. “[Donald Trump] will continue working with allies and partners to increase diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea to end its threatening and destabilizing behavior.”Russia and China backed the USdrafted resolution which bans exports of coal, iron, lead ore and seafood from North Korea.

By Desert Star Staff NOGALES, Ariz. – Minorities are increasingly becoming the lifeblood of rural Arizona counties - helping many grow and slowing the economic decline of others, according to a new report.

Analysts from Headwaters Economics, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research firm, crunched the numbers from the U.S. Census and the American Community Survey from 1980 to 2015 and found that 99 percent of rural counties in the West saw an increase in populations of Hispanics, other people of color, and foreign-born residents.

Kelly Pohl, a researcher and policy analyst at the firm, and the co-author of the report, says in places where the overall population is down, the influx of young minority families is keeping

the school districts open and bolstering the labor force.

“Because minority populations tend to be younger on average than non-Hispanic white populations, they inject youth and cultural diversity and economic vitality into places, some of which would otherwise be shrinking,” she explains.

The data show that since 1980, Santa Cruz County, which includes Nogales on the Mexican border, grew 130 percent in total population. La Paz County, which includes Parker, grew 147 percent.

One outlier is Greenlee County on the New Mexico border, which shrank by 21 percent.
