‘Say a Little Prayer’ Music legend and undisputed Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin dies aged 76.

Soul music icon Aretha Franklin has died, surrounded by her family and friends at her home in Detroit, following a long battle with illness.

She was 76 years old.

The singer died at 9:50 am local time on Thursday.

Her representative, Gwendolyn Quinn, said in a statement that the cause of her death was advanced pancreatic

Fund Important for WI Recreation and Timber Set to Expire

By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – As the clock ticks down, conservation groups are calling for the permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program that’s won bipartisan support in the past.

Wisconsin has received more than $210 million since the fund was created more than 50 years ago. It’s set to expire on September 30.

Along with protecting areas such as the Ice Age and North Country National Scenic Trails, the executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, George Myer, says the fund’s Forest Legacy Program also is protecting the state’s forests from development.

He says this supports recreation as well as the timber industry, which is integral to northern Wisconsin’s economy. “[It] provides timber that’s

used by the important pulp and paper industry in the state, and also the many sawmills throughout the state, which provide timber for building homes and other buildings,” he explains. “Provides jobs for loggers, and really is critically important.”

Myer says the Forest Legacy Program has protected more than 100,000 acres of land in Wisconsin. It’s leveraged $28 million in federal funds to invest in easements and fee acquisitions in order to protect these lands. The fund also is used to build playgrounds, swimming pools, baseball fields and other facilities.

Myer says protecting lands for recreation is important for Wisconsin’s economy too.

Outdoor recreation contributes nearly $18 billion in consumer spending and supports nearly 170,000 jobs, according to the Outdoor Industry Association.

SD Farmers Have 60 Days to Discontinue Chlorpyrifos Applications

By Desert Star Staff SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Midwest farmers and other users of the pesticide chlorpyrifos can continue applying the chemical to crops for the next two months,

when the Environmental Protection Agency has been ordered to ban its use.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 last week that use of the pesticide must end, because studies show

it can harm the brains of children. Willa Childress with the Minneapolis office of Pesticide Action Network said studies show children exposed to chlorpyrifos suffer from reduced IQ, attention deficit disorder and

delayed motor development that can last into adulthood.

“The 9th Court of Appeals is really upholding the law to protect kids from a pesticide that harms their developing brains,” Childress said. “The EPA determined that infants were being exposed to chlorpyrifos at levels 140 times that that could be considered safe.”

Growers say the pesticide has been an important tool to effectively manage or eliminate pests from a variety of crops. South Dakota has a significant presence of the pesticide, but not as much as surrounding states, including Minnesota, eastern North Dakota, northwestern Iowa and northeastern Nebraska.

An EPA spokesperson said the agency is reviewing the court’s decision.

A lawsuit over the pesticide has lingered since 2007, even though the EPA’s own internal

McCain’s condition — dire enough that a recent HBO documentary on him was titled “John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls” — has not stopped Trump from deriding the Arizona senator at political rallies. Though Trump does not use his name, he tells crowds that he would have been able to repeal Obamacare if not for a thumbs-down sign from one senator — McCain.

The senator’s own statement included Trump’s name in the headline and in a preamble written by staff.

But the words attributed to McCain did not.

For communications professional Julie Warden of Charleston, freedom depends on having health insurance.

Warden was diagnosed with arthritis at age 21. She said without the ACA, she could lose the coverage she needs.

Scientists capture the speed of death as it rages through a cell

By Desert Star Staff For the first time ever, scientists have witnessed death itself moving through a cell and have measured its speed. The revolutionary

finding could hold potential for the future treatment of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientists from the Stanford University School of Medicine witnessed the wave-like motion

a rate of three micrometers per minute. A micrometer is equal to one-millionth of a meter.

These signals trigger apoptosis, a type of cell suicide or programmed cell death (PCD). It is the most understood form of cell death and is used by the human body to get rid of old or damaged cells.

“This work is another example of how nature makes use of these trigger waves – things that most biologists have never heard of– over and over again,” biochemist James Ferrell of cell death and published said. “It is a recurring theme in their groundbreaking findings cell regulation. I bet we’ll start in the journal Science. to see it in textbooks soon.”

The team found signals that Scientists used the egg trigger death to travel through of an African clawed frog, cells in a domino-like effect, at which is a single, large cell, to

conduct the experiment. After removing the cytoplasm and placing it in a tube, they then initiated apoptosis and used a fluorescent green protein that glows when apoptosis occurs.

The green glow moved at a constant speed which shows apoptosis was spreading through trigger waves rather than chemical diffusion. Scientists then conducted the same experiment with an intact egg.

The findings add to scientists’ understanding of cellular death, which could contribute to research on cancer treatment and for Alzheimer’s as well as other neurodegenerative conditions.

‘The Rider’--A True Story of An American Cowboy

“The Rider,” a moving western story set on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, was written and directed by Chloe Zhao, a Chinese-born, U.S. based independent filmmaker. Lauded

by Variety as one of the best films of 2018, “The Rider” won the C.I.C.A.E. Award at the Cannes Film International

Film Festival, the Grand Prix Award at the Deauville Film Festival and is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 97%. The film is now available on Blu-ray and DVD as of August 7 and is well worth seeing.

What makes “The Rider” such a compelling cinematic experience is the

fact that it’s based on the real-life experiences of Brady Jandreau, who stars in the movie along with his actual father and teenaged sister, Jim and Lilly Jandreau.

Brady, a young bronco rider, and rodeo star was violently thrown from his horse in 2016 and received a severe head injury as a result.

He returns home from the hospital with a steel plate in his head and a neurological condition that often causes spasms. His doctors warned him that he would never be able to return safely to the life and career he loves-- a job that defines him as a man and gives him a sense of purpose and self-worth.

Devastated by his doctor’s dire warnings, Brady plans to find a way to overcome his severe injuries. His friends try to console and reassure him as they sit and talk and smoke by a campfire on the range.

While he is healing, he finds work in a local supermarket. He also helps train and break horses for others. He is good at it, and it is evident that he cares about the horses in his care as he talks to them, strokes them gently and rides out into the South Dakota plains on horseback for solace.

Brady tries to continue with his daily life while recuperating, but will he eventually risk everything to ride a bucking bronco once again? As

he struggles we watch his 15-year-old sister Lilly try to comfort him. It is clear that they share a special bond. His father also loves him but is less able to express his feelings.

Watching “The Rider” the viewer can experience the lives of modern cowboys who, while not wealthy, live and love what they do in remote areas of the United States. And Brady Jandreau, playing out his own real-life story, gives a compelling performance. Perhaps a new star has been born.

Bonus features on the DVD include five deleted scenes, a Q&A with Chloe Zhao, Brady Jandreau, cinematographer Joshua James Richards and editor Alex O’Flinn for an in-depth discussion about the filmmaking process, and a Q&A with Brady Jandreau from the South by Southwest Film Festival.

Safe Disposal Resources for California’s Sharps Users

outside of a medical facility for treatment may have questions about how to get rid of their used sharps safely.

New information and resources from NeedyMeds, a national non-profit patient education organization, is

making it easier for people to dispose of needles safely no matter where they happen to be.

Research shows that people who use needles and lancets to manage their medical conditions believe it is their responsibility to dispose of their sharps safely, but may lack clear, factual information on what to do. Much of the existing information does not personalize disposal guidelines for people in every state.

“SafeNeedleDisposal.org will help Californians make sense of safe sharps disposal options nearest to their home, work or wherever is convenient,” said Ed Hawthorne, a Californiabased member of the National Diabetes Volunteer Leadership Council and former national

chairman of the board of the American Diabetes Association.

“This resource is much-needed for those who regularly use needles to manage their health conditions and want to do the right thing.”

According to the Food and Drug Administration, sharps that are not disposed of properly may cause injury.

In large saucepan over medium heat, heat butter.

Stir in marshmallows until melted.

Stir in popcorn until well coated.

Spread mixture evenly onto prepared pizza pan.

Drizzle red piping gel over “pizza” to make “sauce.”

Cut small circles (about 1 1/4 inches in diameter) from fruit roll-up and place on pizza for “pepperoni” slices.

Decorate as desired with jelly beans, coconut and candies. Allow to cool completely before cutting into wedges to serve.

Yield: About 30 pieces 6 cups popped popcorn 1 cup roasted and salted peanuts 1 package (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup honey Popcorn and Peanut Truffles In large bowl, stir popcorn and peanuts together; set aside.

In microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate chips 10 seconds. Stir chips and repeat, stirring after each 10 seconds, until chips are melted. Warm honey in microwave 10 seconds and stir into chocolate until well blended.

Pour chocolate mixture over popcorn mixture and stir until popcorn is evenly coated. With small ice cream scoop, push popcorn mixture into scoop and release onto wax paper to form truffles. Refrigerate until firm.

Note: Truffles can be stored in an airtight container up to 5 days.

Place cooked popcorn and turkey pepperoni in large bowl; spray lightly with cooking spray.
