California’s biggest country music event, Stagecoach, arrives in Indio, California, April 24, 25 and 26,

2015.

The three-day event features a diverse lineup of famed performers ranging from contemporary commercial hit makers (Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton) and traditionalists (Sturgill Simpson, Merle Haggard) to bona fide Americana heroes (Steve Earle, The Lone Bellow, Nikki Lane)

and rock ‘n’ roll icons (ZZ Top, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Eric Burdon & the Animals) that collectively offer a lot of everything to everybody.

The 26th Annual Desert Spirit Gala

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 26th Annual Desert Spirit Gala was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on April 12th. The American Cancer Society sponsors the event.

This is the Premier Gala to fund cancer. The theme for the Gala was the Yellow Brick Road.

Guests entered on a Yellow Brick Road carpet to the Reception filled with silent auction items.

Some of the people attending wore Wizard of Oz costumes.

Will Donato with his beautiful saxophone playing entertained guests. Melissa Neiderman and Stephanie Bassanelli were the Advisory Chairs with Tristan and Teresa Rogers and Bobbie Eakes and David Steen as Honorary Chairs. Sponsors included Harold Matzner, H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation and Jan L. Bergman. Bobbie Eakes thrilled the guests with a couple of songs that had the people on the dance floor singing with her.

Guests enjoyed a variety of foods and desserts from some of the best local restaurants in the Valley. Restaurants were Cliffhouse, El Mirasol, Kasier Grille Restaurants, Pacifica, Wally’s

Desert Turtle, Rio Azul, The Old Spaghetti Factory, Smokin Burgers, Dish, Koffi, Over the Rainbow Desserts and Spencers that served 400 lobsters and 400 shrimp dishes. Over 400 guests ate these scrumptious foods served at each vendor’s table. So many other businesses provided the flowers, drinks and appetizers not to mention all the silent auction items.

The celebration of Life presentations went to three young children fighting Cancer, Desirae Cechin, Jacob Reyes and Juliana Rose Finazzo. The Inspirational Award went to Gloria Greer, and the Jackie Lee Houston Spirit Award went to Melissa Neiderman. Cancer survivors spoke to the crowd to help raise money to fight cancer with research and to help those who are in a battle with the disease. Patrick Evans was guest auctioneer and Brian Woznak, and Karen Devine served as emcees. Drew Davis was the Host Restaurateur.

Entertainment during dinner and for dancing later was the New Sensations Band. This is one gala that should not be missed.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The annual Opera Under the Stars was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa Rose Lawn on April 19th. The lush lawn was filled with opera lovers, and the weather was perfect for an outdoor event. The evening was dedicated to Palm Springs Life Magazine and to the memory of its publisher, Milt Jones, who passed away last year. Karen and Tony Barone honored Milt Jones and Palm Springs Life magazine with a 58” tall painted all aluminum sculpture that they created for this event.

The award was unveiled and given to Frank Jones, Milt’s

son, who is now the publisher and owner of Palm Springs Life Magazine. Frank said he was thrilled to receive this and would find a special place at the Magazine headquarters for it. Nancy Harris presented the award to Frank. The Sculpture was donated by, Artists to Opera Arts, as their 2015 St. Cecilia Patron of Music Award. Opera Arts is a nonprofit organization that brings musical performances, operas and operettas to the Coachella Valley Community and our youth.

The 2016 award will go to local celebrity Gloria Greer.

The Annual Opera Under the Stars Company and dinner music was provided by the renown pianist, Gale Enger. There was a delicious sit-down dinner before the Opera program began.

Music Director and Pianist Victoria Kirsch spoke to the guests about the opera being performed. She explained each song as the songs were sung in a foreign language that not all would understand.

The performers were Shana Blake Hill and Zachary Gordin. They made each song come alive so translations were not always so necessary. You understood their emotions by their performance of the song.

Everyone who works for a living is familiar with what can happen if they lose their job. On the other hand, the possibility of a serious disability is a risk few seem to consider. How likely is it that you will become seriously disabled? According to one study, 30 percent of all Americans between the ages of 35 and 65 suffered a disability lasting at least 90 days. The risk is real. The question is, “What to do about it? Unless this is a benefit provided through your employer, many people will not be covered other than State Disability Insurance (SDI).

Don’t count on Social Security! A few individuals do manage to qualify for disability benefits from Social Security.

However, even those who are covered by a group policy can still be at substantial risk.

Employer-sponsored disability policies seldom replace more than 60 percent of your monthly salary. Further, many policies have a monthly maximum benefit that may be far less than what some people earn.

Employers may sponsor plans which are purchased by their employees. These plans may offer short and long term disability, critical illness and hospital benefit plans. You can only purchase these plans thru your employer, thus these are great plans to purchase as you cannot purchase these in the open market.

Income taxes can also be an issue; if the employer is paying the full cost of the coverage, and not including it in the employee’s

balance sheets, income and expense statements, budget comparisons, general ledgers, executed contracts, board approvals of proposals or invoices, tax returns, reserve account balances, records of payments from reserves, agendas and minutes of member and open board meetings, membership list, and check register.

If you request a review of your association records, your request should be in writing.

The association can require reimbursement of the copy cost. Make your records request reasonably specific - it is not helpful to request a review of “everything”.

HOA boards should not keep financial information from their neighbors, except when it is truly necessary, such as financial matters related to closed session issues or neighbor delinquencies.

Richard LaGravenese’s Personal Journey – The Early Days

By Beverly Cohn Recap Part 1: Richard LaGravenese is one of those very successful Hollywood writers who very rarely is recognizable by the general public. However, his vast list of screenwriting credits speak for themselves and include, Rude Awakening, Behind the Candelabra, Water for Elephants, P.S. I Love You, Freedom Writers, Paris, je t’aime, Beloved, The Horse Whisperer, The Mirror Has Two Faces, The Bridges of Madison County, A Little Princess, The Ref, Erin Brockovich, and his break-out script The Fisher King.

In Part 1 we discussed the genesis of his latest film, The Last Five Years, starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordon as a young couple struggling with their marriage as told through a musical score. LaGravenese adapted and directed Jason Robert Brown’s musical, originally performed in New York, morphing it into his screen version.

The following is Part 2 of an exclusive interview with Richard LaGravenese and has been edited for content and continuity.

When did you actually start writing and did your parents influence your path?

LaGravenese: I wrote my first short story when I was nine in the ninth grade and have been writing ever since. I had parents who took me to the theatre at a very early age. My mom introduced

me to all the movies of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. In those days, when I was a little boy, they were showing them on television so I got to know all those movies.

My dad took me to the movies every Sunday. The 60s and 70s was an incredible period in film – breaking rules and ratings. My dad never cared about ratings so he took me to see everything. It didn’t matter if it was “R” rated. I saw The Wild Bunch when I was nine or ten. So, I always wrote and wanted to be in that world somehow - in theatre and film. I was from Brooklyn so New York was my goal. I never thought of Hollywood. I never thought of L.A. That seemed like a distant impossibility so I never thought of it as a career.

Are you concerned about the lack of the arts in schools?

LaGravenese: It is definitely a problem. Why don’t they value it? Being on this side of the equation, I just don’t understand why they don’t see how it enriches kids. There are so many creative kids who go through the system who don’t have the outlet to express themselves and to find themselves – my daughter being one of them. She went through a school that was very classically trained and not very supportive. She had a much more creative non-linear way of thinking and her singing in an A Capella group was really what got her through school.

What was your major in college?

LaGravenese: I was a theatre major at NYU in the early days of the Experimental Theatre Wing: Tisch School of the Arts.

For the first two years I was at Emerson College in Boston. I was writing all through those years, but primarily studying to be an actor. I went from summer stock companies to experimental theatre, which is a lot of writing.

I was also part of a comedy act and wrote skit comedy and a one-act play. I met my soon-tobe wife who really encouraged me to write a screenplay. It was Follies by Stephen Sondheim, who was also a huge influence for me. His music has taught me a lot about writing.

LaGravenese: I was part of a stand-up comedy act and I was trying to get an agent for us. The agent I got at William Morris happened to live with her brother. He was single and she was single so they would just go out together as friends and he brought her to one of my gigs and we connected.

Was it love at first sight?

LaGravenese: It was a connection at first sight. It was one of those nights where we would go to four different places and we connected even though I knew other people better. My wife Ann is the one I credit with my career. On our first date, she saw me do a one-act play that I written and acted in. She said you have to keep writing. I said, ‘Really? I was never a confident person. I wanted to do theatre and she said theatre is great but there’s no money in it. She said I should write a screenplay and that became The Fisher King, which I did as a writing sample to get work, never thinking it was

going to get made. The only reason I finished that script was to please her.

How long did it take to write “The Fisher King?”

LaGravenese: It took a year and a half or so. I’d put it down and not work on it for five months. Then I’d pick it up again. She’d come home after work. She was supporting us.

She’d make dinner and I’d wash the dishes. She’d go read. I’d stay in the other room. She’d come back in and tell me that I should finish writing the script.

Every creative person needs a muse. Is she yours?

LaGravenese: She’s the backbone. She’s the reason I’m here. Believe me.

They’re giving me the “hook” so I have to end our interview. It was so nice meeting you and I look forward to whatever your next project may me.

Earth Day cleanup in Twentynine Palms on April 25

This week marks the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, founded on April 22, 1970.

When Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, became distressed by the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA, he proposed a massive national outreach for environmental education. On April 22, nearly 20 million Americans demonstrated for a healthy,

sustainable environment in coast-to-coast rallies.

In honor of Earth Day, the City of Twentynine Palms Public Works Department and Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services are partnering with nearly 100 members of the Church of Latter-day Saints and volunteers from the First Baptist Church to clean up an area of downtown from the highway at Split Rock Avenue to El Paseo Drive on Saturday, April 25.

The City also encourages all residents and business owners to participate in the annual Earth Day efforts and help spruce up downtown by cleaning trash and debris from their yards and properties during Earth Day weekend.

Residents can also help by making a special effort to recycle cans, bottles, paper and plastic this week. For those who do not have curbside recycling, recycle bins are available in

front of the City’s Public Works building at 6994 Bullion Avenue, off Sullivan Road, in Twentynine Palms.

Considered to be the birth of the modern environmental movement, the first Earth Day in 1970 led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people

in 141 countries addressing environmental issues and prompting recycling efforts worldwide.

100-Carat Diamond Could Bring $25M at Auction

By KMIR News Staff NEW YORK (AP) - A “perfect” 100-carat diamond in a classic emerald-cut could fetch between $19 million to $25 million at auction.

“This 100.20-carat diamond is the definition of perfection. The color is whiter than white. It is free of any internal imperfections,” Sotheby’s New York jewelry department head Gary Schuler said in a statement, likening its transparency “to a pool of icy water.”

The internally flawless D color stone is the only classic emerald-cut white diamond of the highest color and clarity and over 100 carats to come to auction, according to Sotheby’s, which will sell the diamond on Tuesday.

The diamond was mined in southern Africa within the last 10 years and weighed over 200 carats before it was cut and polished, the auction house said.

The owner wished to remain anonymous.

Only five “perfect” diamonds over 100 carats have sold at auction in the last 25 years, with a 118-carat oval-cut stone fetching $30.6 million at Sotheby’s in 2013. It set a record for a white diamond.

A record for any diamond is $46 million for a 24.78-carat emerald-cut pink stone, set at Sotheby’s in 2010. It also set a record for any jewel at auction.

Joshua Tree Music Festival Returns May 14-16

How to get there: Drive east

on SR 62 also known as 29 Palms Hwy. through Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree to Sun Fair Road. Turn left and drive north a few miles to the campground entrance. A rustic, remote desert airstrip lies on the left and an eclectic metal sculpture garden is on the right.

The Jayes’ worked hard over the past 18 years to revive the lake and campground to its present condition, offering dry camping, hot showers, restrooms, and plenty of porta-potties cleaned every morning. They also offer hot water from their own wells.

The campground also offers laundry, RV dump sites and 44 electric hook ups.

“Man Of La Mancha” Onstage at Palm Canyon

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic There are only a handful of musicals that one could classify as being bullet proof as far as audiences go. If the actors are breathing and the singers can sing on-key, then chances are good that the production will be a winner. “My Fair Lady”, “Company”, “West Side Story” and “Man of La Mancha” are among musicals I would classify as bullet proof.

The Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) opened a brilliant and highly entertaining production of “Man of La Mancha” last weekend.

As good as the musicals are at the Palm Canyon Theatre, this particular production raised the entertainment bar several notches kicking this terrific show to a higher level. There is really no substitute for great writing, wonderful melodies, and inspired lyrics. When good performers have the luxury of mixing these ingredients together, one will always end up with a delicious tasting award-wining production.

“Man of La Mancha” written

by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion had ‘Blockbuster” written all over it when it debuted on Broadway in 1965 (running for over 2300 performances). The show nabbed five Tony Awards winning The Tony for Best Musical, and Best Actor, making a star out of Richard Kiley for his Don Quixote portrayal.

It’s the second time around being Don Quixote for the valley’s

premiere Baritone and actor Mark Almy. He performed the role at the Palm Canyon Theatre some fifteen years ago and has only gotten better (if that is possible) over the years. When he makes an entrance… he makes a commanding entrance! The tone of this wonderful musical production, brilliantly directed

by Scott Smith, has enough energy to light up the entire Coachella Valley. The cast of twenty talented and dedicated cast members of actors, singers, and dancers bring to life Dale Wasserman’s inspiring Book/ Libretto in a winning fashion with style and flair.

In the role of the beautiful, fiery, cynical, serving wench Aldonza, is Svlvia Tethal, who also serves as the production’s choreographer. The possessor of a beautiful classically trained voice, Tethal brings an intensity and commitment to her portrayal of Aldonza, the world-weary parttime prostitute, which is riveting to watch. Her choreography highlights some of her best work to date, and her dancers are equal to her challenge of graceful, yet energetic dance movements.

Valley favorite Tom Warrick plays Sancho Panza, the squire and devoted servant to Don Quixote. Warrick is master of comic timing and his lyric baritone is just what is called for as the comic relief character. He never disappoints.

In large cast shows it’s always difficult to list everyone, but there are always standouts

and this splendid production is no exception. Allegra Angelo, delivers a winning turn as Antonia and when she’s onstage the audience can’t their eyes off her.

Douglas Paul as the Governor/ Innkeeper, brings his A game to the proceedings; displaying some his best work in the process.

Peter Mins as The Padre, is an actor who always delivers 100 percent whether he has the lead role or is carrying a spear, and the audience can tell that he’s enjoying every minute it. Ben Reece as Dr. Carrasco, brings his lilting tenor voice combining his character’s mixed emotions portrayal as Don Quixote’s friend and then his foe in the “Knight of the Mirrors” number.

There are 30 musical numbers and reprises in Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion’s incomparable score. The most memorable being the incredibly inspiring “The Impossible Dream” sung with power and poignancy

by Quixote and the haunting “Dulcinea” sung by Quixote and then reprised with Aldonza. It’s great stuff.

The cast is chock full of talented artists and boasts an exceptional company of gifted ensemble performers. The secret of successful musical productions is the dedication of the ensemble to always be in the moment; always focused and to be generous to a fault when it comes to sharing the stage with their fellow actors. There are no small parts in “Man of La Mancha”, everyone shines;

adding up to an exhilarating display of individual excellence within a team framework.

As usual, the technical credits at the Palm Canyon Theatre are first rate. The impressive set design by resident design wizard J.W. Layne is breathtaking in its overall visual impact yet functional when required for the actors, dancers, and singers to perform their magic. Whatever “sound bugs” that plagued “The Secret Garden” production thankfully have disappeared from “Man of La Mancha”. The costuming team led by Peter Mins includes: Delinda Angelo, Colleen Walker and Charles Rabb who provide the grunge and grit one would expect to see in the costumes of late 16th century Spain. Don Quixote’s costumes, however, are works of art in themselves.

Box Office Top 20: ‘Furious 7’ nears $300 million

With $1.15 billion in worldwide receipts, “Furious 7” has become the seventh highest-grossing film of all time, behind “Iron Man 3.”

Despite lackluster reviews, Sony’s “Paul Blart” sequel opened stronger than expected with $23.8 million on a $30 million budget, while Universal and Blumhouse’s micro-budget horror film “Unfriended” well surpassed its $1 million production budget, taking in $15.8 million in its first week in release.

It’s like moving a city into a city with about 100,000 concertgoers, and as the festival was maximum capacity on Sunday.

“She said that she had several other reports where people had Coachella related thefts and problems like that,” said Ross.

On the other end of the valley, Freda Landress lives near the festival and says, “It really doesn’t bother us, just that the traffic coming in on Monroe coming into our cul-de-sac gets a little heavy.”

Traffic on Interstate 10 was heavy as concert-goers left the valley, but it was flowing well appearing smoother than last weekend.

Indio police don’t have the arrest statistics yet for this weekend. he first weekend 93 people were arrested.

“I think it does excellent, you’ve got to understand just the numbers, you could say in three days do you arrest 93 people in the city of Indio, and no we don’t, but it’s a different atmosphere, there’s alcohol, beer gardens, it’s a party,” said Sgt. Dan Marshall with the Indio Police Department.

New this year, Indio Police also had a team out to enforce

scalping rules with people trying to sell tickets around the venue.

Indio police are now preparing for Stagecoach Country Music Festival to roll into town.

The Sanctuary Palm Springs Party Story and Photos by Pat Krause The kick-off Sanctuary Palm Springs Party was held at the private residence of Jeff Stanley and Alian Peracca, who were kind enough to open their home to over 100 guests on April 16th. L D Thompson and David Rothmiller are the founders of this much-needed venture. They are bringing an LGBT family home to young people that are in foster care and have no other place to go. It will provide safety and security to those that can benefit from a family type environment.

Many of these young people have horror stories of being kicked out of their homes when they came out to their families or have been

bullied mercilessly.

The Sanctuary will be a place to heal and get an education.

There will be counseling along with people who will mentor them in various occupations. Many locals have stepped up to help with this project. L D Thompson spoke about his own family rejection when he came out and even contemplated suicide.

One of the boys in the program spoke about how he has lived in four different foster homes, and each one was not a healthy environment for a gay youth. L D said this would be first and read emails from other people across the country that would like to follow this program and needed

advice on how to accomplish what David and L D have done.

Guests wrote checks to help with the expenses, and one gentleman even offered a fourbedroom home for their use.

David and L D also asked for volunteers and mentors, as that will be a big part of the program.

These kids need somewhere they feel safe and can start a productive life with education

and mentors. Terri Ketover and Barbara Keller spoke about the project, and Geoff Kors gave some insight into the program where kids can feel like family and where different is normal.

‘Mr. Selfridge,’ ‘A Most Violent Year’ and More If you love shopping, shopping, shopping, then the PBS Masterpiece series “Mr Selfridge” will be your cup of tea.

The popular British TV series, now in it’s third season on PBS, is based on the Lindy Woodhead biography “Shopping, Seduction and Mr. Selfridge.” Created for television by Emmy Awardwinning writer Andrew Davies (“Pride and Prejudice,” “Bleak House”), it tells the story of American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, the colorful and visionary founder of Selfridge’s, London’s lavish department store. Emmy Award-winning actor Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) stars in the title role. Frances O’Connor (“Madam Bovary”) plays his wife, Rose.

Long before there was Harrods, there was Selfridge’s, founded in 1909 by an enterprising American who is credited for coining the phrase, “The customer is always right.”

He also created an amazing department store which has served as a model for all department stores, past and present. A master of innovative marketing and merchandise on display, Selfridge placed the perfume counters on the first floor which is still the way department stores do it.today.

Reckless, with an almost manic energy, Henry Selfridge created a theater of retail for early 1900’s Londoners, where any topic or trend that was new, exciting, entertaining or sometimes just eccentric was showcased.

Not only is the series historical, shedding a light on how the vision of modern shopping was developed; it is also lovely to look at with its

lavish period costumes. Season one begins in 1909, showing how the store was founded and developed. In season two, the time frame is 1914 as the world is heading toward the first World War. At present, season three is being aired on PBS, and the good news is, there will be a season four. Tune in now to PBS to watch the show on TV. Story and Photos by Pat Krause Cinemas Palme D’Or held an exclusive sneak preview screening of the film, The Water Diviner, before the films release in the U.S., The film was the first directorial debut by actor Russel Crowe that also is the leading actor in the film. The film is about an Australian man who goes to Turkey after World War 1 to find his three sons after the Battle of Gallipoli. There are many twists and turns in his effort to find his sons amid the unrest that still occupied Turkey. It is an in depth view of the country at that time and the beliefs of the people of Turkey that he had to deal with.

The Theatre held a Q & A after the screening with 5 of the main actors in the film.

Jacqueline McKenzie played his wife, with Steve Bastoni, Ryan

Corr and Ben O’Toole that played the three sons. Actor Yilmaz Erdogan played the soldier who helped him look for his sons. All the actors are excellent in the film and have been acting for many years and are well known actors in Australia. The film has won many awards already in Australia before it is brought to be distributed in the U.S. The film will be shown in over 350 theatres starting on Friday, April 24th. This is a must see film as it is very exciting and emotional.

Our own local Bill Finegold moderated the Q&A. Bill asked the actors about the film and then asked them to tell the audience what they are doing next after this film. The actors answered questions from the audience as well. It was truly informative, and the actors seemed extremely at

“A Most Violent Year” from Lionsgate was one of the films that LA Times film critic Betsy Sharkey said deserved a best-picture nomination.

Unfortunately, this gritty story of crime and corruption was overlooked in the past year’s Oscar race. If you missed seeing this gritty thriller in the theater, it is now available on DVD and Blu-ray as of April 7.

Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) turns in a fine performance as Abel Morales, head of a lucrative oil delivery service which he took over from his wife’s father. He prides himself on running his business without corruption or mob influence, unlike his father-inlaw. Things are going well for the company which he now runs with his wife (Jessica Chastain (“Zero dark Thirty”), but on the eve of a huge business deal, he finds himself snared in a web of danger and deceit. Suddenly, he is beset by rivals who want to take over his company and a D.A. (David Oyelowo. “Selma”) who wants to take him down for political reasons. This is unfortunate since Abel has done everything by the book, unlike his predecessor and many of

When the director was asked what was his favorite experience in directing the film he said, “Surprisingly, the editing.

The shoots were amazingly fun and funny as hell, but the sorting of the puzzle pieces, and trying to create a narrative that simply didn’t exist until I created one, was never dull and constantly surprising and enlightening. And, again, hilarious.”

According to Pollak, his film gives viewers the opportunity to “hear, first hand, what it actually takes to bare your soul in front of strangers and beg them to love you for it..”

Willie Nelson becomes Latest Celebrity in Marijuana Business

By Nicholas K. Geranios Associated Press SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Country music star Willie Nelson announced plans Monday to roll out his own brand of marijuana, capitalizing on his association with pot and the unofficial stoner holiday, 4/20.

The move makes the 81-yearold “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” singer the latest celebrity to jump into the marijuana marketplace.

“Willie’s Reserve” will be grown and sold in Colorado and Washington, where recreational pot is legal. Nelson said in a statement that he’s “looking forward to working with the best growers in Colorado and Washington to make sure our product is the best on the market.”

Nelson joins other famous

pot personalities, including rapper Snoop Dogg, who endorses vaporizing products; singer Melissa Etheridge, developing marijuanainfused wine; and reality TV star and self-help guru Bethenny Frankel, who is working on a strain of Skinnygirl weed that wouldn’t leave users with the munchies.

“Like other industries, branding and creative marketing is a big part of supporting legal cannabis products,” said Vicki Christophersen, director of the Washington CannaBusiness Association.

Christophersen said these connections continue a long tradition of celebrities endorsing the use of marijuana - even decades before it became legal for adult use.

Nelson, who was not available for comment Monday, is among

those with well-established connections to cannabis. He’s been a decriminalization advocate and has been busted for pot possession several times. He also appeared in the stoner comedy “Half Baked.”

Washington and Colorado made pot legal for adult use in 2012. Oregon, Alaska and the District of Columbia also have removed legal restrictions, and more states are expected to vote on legalization next year.

The moves have created marketing opportunities, but links to celebrity smokers aren’t always considered a positive.

This year, the National Cannabis Industry Association decided to drop actor Tommy Chong - co-star of the “Cheech and Chong” comedy team - as it prepared to lobby Congress

for pot-friendly regulations. The group wanted to move past the stoner stereotypes they say Chong represents in favor of positioning pot as similar to fine wine.

Others see it differently, however.

Chong has an endorsement

deal with Marisol Therapeutics, a pot shop in Pueblo, Colorado, that sells a strain in his name.

Store owner Mike Stetler called Chong marijuana’s equivalent of the Marlboro Man, and when it comes to pot pitchmen, he asked, “Who better?” Source KMIR

Compelling Story Of One Man’s Courage

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Courage, principle, and perseverance to stay the course despite all odds and pressure is not easily achieved by many people. Also, it’s very intimidating for any individual to stand up and legally challenge The United States of America, whatever the circumstances.

Following the December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor attack by Japan, war-time America and its people were in no mood to listen to reason concerning thousands of natural born citizens of Japanese ancestry whose loyalty was, not only being decided in the court of public opinion, but also in the government’s rush-tojudgment decision to suspend the Constitutional rights of all naturalborn and naturalized citizens of Japanese ancestry. Thousands of American citizens were placed in hastily built and isolated internment camps around the country. It was a shameful period in American history. “ H o l d T h e s e Tr u t h s ” compellingly written by Jeanne Sakata and insightfully directed

by CV REP artistic director Ron Celona is the journey of Americanborn Gordon Hirabayashi and his pursuit of justice for himself, his family, and for all people who stand up and fight for their guaranteed right during periods of national

hysteria, paranoia, and fear.

The condition that drives these actions is very much alive and well today, not only in America, but in countries and cultures around the world.

Sakata’s wide ranging play that affected many people and generated many stories is synthesized down into one real life character: Gordon Hirabayashi.

He is portrayed by talented LAbased actor Blake Kushi. It falls to Kushi, who plays multiple roles, to vividly bring to life the events that occurred over a four year time frame, and its aftermath.

First, is the disbelief by Hirabayashi that his government could or would actually round up some of its own citizens and place them internment camps for “their own safety and the country’s national security”. This is the very same activity that was going on in Hitler’s Germany.

This was America not Europe.

These abhorrent actions were the reasons the world was fighting in WW II. Hirabayashi’s decision to challenge the country’s extralegal law was a no-brainer. He respectfully declined to sign his own internment papers which launched him onto a historic legal battle and journey: Gordon Hirabayashi vs. The United States of America. It was a journey that would take over forty years for

him to be eventually vindicated.

He received the nation’s highest civilian honor The Medal of Freedom in 1989.

Director Celona very creatively utilizes existing photos, and documents by juxtaposing the material into projection images surrounding the various playing areas; reinforcing the narrative being performed by Kushi. It’s a creative blending of theatrical conventions that lend weight and heft to the captivating,

and at times, poignant onstage performance of Blake Kushi.

This is one of CV REP’s most technically ambitious productions to date. The blending of Jimmy Cuomo’s intriguing set design, with the splendid lighting design of technical designer Eddie Cancel is becoming a solid team effort. Ditto, the spot-on Sound designs of John Zalewski, along with the velvet touch of technician Karen Goodwin. Thanks to stage manager Louise Ross, the

production and action flows fluidly and smoothly.

“Hold These Truths”, is the last production in CV REP’s series of plays centered around the theme “America’s Melting Pot” - the plays and the stories of the American immigrant experience.

Yellow Cab of the Desert Donates Wheelchair

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Even in the midst of the desert’s busy music festival season, the drivers at Yellow Cab of the Desert are quick to provide a helping hand whenever they can.

In the case of little Shelby Huerta, a four-year-old Palm Desert girl, the ability to make her life and the lives of her parents and younger sisters a bit better, one Yellow Cab driver thought there was a way the Palm Desert cab company might be able to help.

“A driver actually brought Victoria and Shelby’s story to my attention, and as I watched it was just overwhelmed with compassion for what they’re going through,” said Michal Brock, general manager of Yellow Cab of the Desert.

With a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander van that is wheelchair accessible due to be retired at the end of May, Brock brought the story to the attention of the board members of the Yellow Cab Cares and asked if the van could be donated to the Huerta family. “The answer was an immediate yes,” Brock said.

Shelby, who was born with a Chromosome 6-Q deletion, has the mental and physical development of a six-month-old and is non-verbal. She needs her specially adapted wheelchair at all times. But with only a family sedan, it meant leaving the chair at home and either carrying her or using a stroller that does not give the child the support she needs.

The Yellow Cab of the Desert 2006 Chevrolet Uplander Van that will be donated to the Huerta Family in early June to make transporting Shelby more comfortable for the family.

The van is equipped with a ramp for easy loading and unloading of the wheelchair, tie-downs to stabilize the chair when the van is in motion and a higher than normal ceiling.

Although it has been driven more than 300,000 miles around the Coachella Valley, the van recently underwent engine and transmission repairs. It will be retired on May 31. Once it has been stripped of the cab decals, top light and meter, Yellow Cab hopes to give it a new paint job, “Hopefully white with pink sparkles,” said Shelby’s mother, Victoria Garcia.

If all goes as planned, Brock and other members of the Yellow Cab Cares board hope to give the keys to the Huerta family by June 5, just prior to Shelby’s fifth birthday.

“With this van, we can get her to all her doctors’ appointments and get her to the support that she needs,” Garcia said. “And we’ll be able to go to so many places as a family. It’s a real blessing for us,” said Garcia.

Aztecs Look to Put League Title Out of Reach PALM DESERT – Even with the glamorous Coachella music festival stealing the attention from the desert for the last two weekends, the Palm Desert High School Aztecs baseball team has kept its focus on winning a seventh-straight Desert Valley League championship.

Over the course of the previous month, the Aztecs (5-1 DVL, 15-7 overall) have been preparing for the final stretch of the season having purposely scheduled games against some of the best programs in Southern California.

After defeating Ca. top100 Royal High School out of Simi Valley on April 2nd in the Coachella Valley Rotary Tourney Championship, the Aztecs fell in extra innings to Ca. top-20 Alemany High School in the first game of the Boras Classic Tournament on the 7th.

The following day, the Boras tournament continued but the Aztecs fell again, 4-0, this time to powerhouse Chatsworth High School. Palm Desert did finish the tourney off with a bang, however, earning wins against Lake Balboa-based Birmingham High School and El Cajon-based Granite High School.

Last week, Coach Salazar’s boys started the final portion of the DVL season with a sweep of the lowly Cathedral City High School Lions (0-6 in DVL, 2-18 overall). The Aztecs welcomed the DVL’s second-place Indio High School Rajahs (3-1 DVL, 14-6 overall) to Palm Desert yesterday* for the start of a pivotal two-game, TuesdayWednesday series.
