Fashion Week at El Paseo Michael Costello designs Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 10th annual Fashion Week El Paseo continues to grow and grow. The event is held under a couple of huge white tents on Larkspur Lane off of El Paseo in the heart of the Valley’s most famous shopping district. Over 40 shops on El Paseo held in store events all week. The Shops offer a preview of new collections,

trunk shows, designer shows, food and wine samplings, hair and makeup techniques, food and refreshments by many of the shops and there is even a day to adopt a pet. There are discounts on purchases and styling events to make every woman feel more beautiful. Some shops had only a one-day event while most held daily events the whole week.

The event runs from March 21st to March 28th with even a few specials after parties.

On Sat. March 21st, they held the 10th anniversary reception and show with designers from past years featuring their new collections on the runway.

Sunday was the Canine Fashion show, and Monday was the El Paseo Runway Fashion

The event started with a 4-course luncheon on Friday the 27th. The Friends of James Beard luncheon showcased female celebrity chefs that gave demonstrations of the courses of food served to the guests. This is the fifth year this event has been held in the big white tent on Larkspur in Palm Desert. Coproducers for the festival were Dominic Peterson and Tony Marchese with the theme, A

Salute to Women.

Female Chefs, Cat Cora, Brooke Williamson, Lulu Powers and Gale Gand treated the guests to some of the fabulous dishes they are known for. Four different wines were served with each course provided by Wine Australia that are to enrich the pallets of the guests. Cat Cora from the Food Network, Award winning Pastry chef, Gale Gand with Restaurant owner Brooke Williamson and Author and caterer LuLu Powers each described the portion of the meal that was served. The guests enjoyed the music of the Michael Holmes Trio while they

ate. Catering was provided by chef Scott Robertson of New Leaf Catering.

Saturday and Sunday of the event will be two days of grand tasting of foods and Wines.

Wineries, local restaurants and chef demonstrations will be enjoyed by more than 3000 people. There is a market place for purchase of the wines tasted.

The designers showed their collections on Tuesday night with Costello bringing in a few of his new fashions. Wednesday, Costello held his own Spring and

Summer collection with a trunk show earlier in the day with his fellow designers. Costello had his fashions worn by Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and an A-list of Celebrities. Charles Krauthammer Q&A

Charles Krauthammer, Pulitzer Prize winner, Author, Columnist, Political Commentator and Fox News Analyst spoke to the guests at the sold out series. The event was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa on March 25th. Krauthammer first greeted guests for a one on one and then went into a room full of 150 high-school students at Desert Youth Town Hall.

Krauthammer did not give a speech to the students but instead answered their questions in a Q&A. Questions by the students included topics on Obama’s care, Immigration, his happiest moments and what is needed to get into a political news career. One of the main things he told the students was to always say what you believe, tell the truth, never lie, and you will be doing your country a service. He seemed pleased with the questions by the students who came from Coachella Valley High Schools.

He spoke to the audience after an introduction by Brian Harnik and Indian Wells Mayor Ty Peabody. His speech was very much about politics and his views on the state of the country under the Obama Administration.

I was truly amazed at his sense of humor throughout his speech as he had the audience laughing every few minutes. He mentioned that Mitt Romney would have

made a great President but was a weak candidate. He mentioned several names that are up for the nomination for President in 2016. When he mentioned Chris Christy, the audience was silent.

He said that what could hurt Christy was the bear hug he gave President Obama that was more like a lap dance.

He criticized Obama’s care, foreign policy and entitlements under Obama. He said the public was lied to about Obama’s care as its intrusive, arrogant and was shoved down the throats of Americans. He also said it would take years to undo the damage done to our foreign policies. We are lacking in the trust of our allies and have lost the fear from our enemies. The beheadings show a real contempt for us and they have no fear of retaliation.

Every time the U S withdraws from an area, there is a gap, and it is always filled with someone looking to do us harm. He said the good news is we just have 21 months left of Obama, and the bad news are we still have 21 months left.

He said if we close the border, there would merely be a trickle of illegal’s to cross our borders. He felt there should be a way for immigration to be fair, so they can work here. He feels that we are becoming a European liberal nation, and we should not help people by giving them handouts but by helping them stand on their own.

Health Science at Eisenhower Med. Center

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Jim Cook Day of Hope for Diabetes and Wellness was held at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences at Eisenhower Med. Center. Guest speaker’s Actor, Dancer, Singer, Ben Vareen and Etie Moghissi MD spoke in the Helene Galen Auditorium during the event. There were so many vendors and testers in the Annenberg Classroom that guests took advantage of all the benefits offered. A1C Testing for those with Diabetes, blood pressure tests, BMI results and new diets and treatment’s Vendors.

This event is a full day of information for those with diabetes or at risk for diabetes and for families and friends.

There were extensive items, and services displayed that were geared or better manage the disease. The practical advice from this product fair was invaluable to make better choices with Diabetes. Melinda Read and President of the Desert Diabetes Club, Ron Cochran, welcomed the guests early in the day.

isn’t entirely clear, it is very likely that the Fed is going to raise short-term interest rates sometime this year. In anticipation of an interest rate hike later this year, there are some investors who instinctively want to sell out or lower their positions in bond ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) and other bond holdings.

Meanwhile, there are other investors that look at the equity market and think that they’re overheated and volatile and they’re seeing safety in bonds, annuities, and REITS (Real Estate Investment Trusts) .

There are some common misconceptions that many bond ETF investors are having right now.

Many might think that if the Fed is raising rates that the economy must be in pretty good shape. In a typical environment where the Fed is on the verge of raising rates – if you look historically – it means that the economy has really been doing quite well and heating up and there are signs of inflation, the employment picture looks strong, and the Fed is really trying to put on the brakes.

That’s not exactly the case for the current environment, though. The economy is certainly in better shape than it has been over the last couple of years and still has room to grow. However some of the problems are that people are taking a lot longer to find a job than they had in the past, almost two or three times

as long. The labor market really isn’t anywhere near as good as the Fed would like to see them at.

Labor force participation is comparing how many people are really working given how many people could be. As we know, the unemployment rate, which is on the lower side at 5.5%, only looks at the number of people that are looking for a job. There are so many people out there that could be looking for a job but have basically given up. Labor force participation rate, is a big concern for the Fed. The unemployment rate is low, but we’re still seeing wage levels that are below and not rising anywhere near the level

that the Fed would like to see them at. Wage earning levels still haven’t recovered.

Conventional wisdom says that if the Fed raises rates, longer term bonds will likely underperform. It’s one of the most common misconceptions out there in the marketplace. The important insight here, is that not all rates are the same.

The Fed controls shortterm rates. They have very little influence on longer-term rates (10, 15, and 30 year securities).

The yields on those securities, which we’ve seen come down significantly over the course of the last several years, could still stay at very low levels and there’s no reason to assume

that they’re going to rise. Longer term rates are driven by growth and inflation, thus the Fed’s actions should have little impact on longer term rates. If the Fed raises rates, short-term bond returns will only be negative if the Fed raises rates at a rate faster than what’s expected.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Common interest development associations are alliances of owners agreeing to share a tract of property and share the control and costs of that property. That sharing of expenses depends upon the regular payment of assessments, the lifeblood of every such association.

California law provides a powerful tool to compel owners to pay their part of the association’s shared costs - the ability to take away someone’s property.

Foreclosure is the power to take someone’s property away to satisfy a debt. Most owners understand that, if they do not pay their mortgage, their bank

can foreclose. Unfortunately, many owners do not understand that their association can do the same regarding delinquent assessments.

Associations can foreclose without court supervision (nonjudicial foreclosure), or as part of a lawsuit (judicial foreclosure).

The foreclosure process cannot begin until the owner is at least $1,800 or one year behind in their assessments, whichever happens first. (Associations can record liens or pursue money in small claims or regular court without waiting for that).

Foreclosure should be pursued only with careful consideration of the risks, costs and impact upon both owner and association. News stories abound of owners losing their homes amid alleged abuse of the process. Certainly the most notorious was that of the Radcliffs in Northern California, who lost their home in about 2002 over an arrearage of $120.

They regained their home after a lawsuit, and major legislative reforms of the collection process ensued.

The threat of foreclosure by recording a lien compels most owners to bring their account current. However,

when the threat does not work, foreclosure should not be automatic, but pursued only after careful consideration of this remedy as the association’s last resort. Before proceeding to spend association funds to take someone’s property, the board should consider the options and consequences of each with its attorney.

Is foreclosure desirable? The property may be so encumbered by mortgages and other liens that there is no reason to take it.

The association could find itself in the same situation as its former member - paying expenses on a worthless asset, wasting money and worsening its problem.

Therefore, balance the probable value of the property against the known liens against that value.

Before completing a foreclosure, consider the costs of selling the property (commissions, escrow fees), evicting the occupants, and the insurance and other costs of ownership. If these costs eliminate the property’s net equity, foreclosure might be a bad idea.

Some foreclosure companies argue that foreclosing on valueless properties still has value, because it will speed up

the bank’s foreclosure and bring in a new assessment paying member sooner. This may or may not be true. Nobody can guarantee when the bank will complete its foreclosure, wiping out the association’s ownership or its lien. Before foreclosing, make sure that it is truly in the association’s best interests.

Watch out for situations in which the homeowner does not respond to save a property with substantial equity. There may be something else involved the owner may have emotional or health issues, or may not understand that the law allows foreclosure. In such cases, explore whether reasonable alternatives exist - try not to take the home unless there really is no other reasonable choice.

Foreclosure is not an opportunity - it’s a last resort.

Meloni: Thank you for saying that.

By Beverly Cohn Christopher Meloni cut his teeth on episodic television beginning with his breakout role on “NYPD Blue.” Following that series, he had a recurring role on HBO’s “Oz” where he played a bisexual serial killer.

Doing a ‘360’ in the character he portrayed, he then co-starred with Mariska Hargitay in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” where he played Detective Elliot Stabler for twelve seasons, leaving the show in 2011. He also had a continuing role on the popular “True Blood” series where he played a vampire named Roman Zimojic.

Moving seamless from television to film, Meloni has racked up a number of credits including, “Man of Steel,” “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” “Twelve Monkeys,” “Runaway Bride,” “Nights in Rodanthe,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” “They Came Together,” “Man of Steel,” “Small Time,” “42,” and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.” His latest film, “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” is scheduled for an August 2015 release.

Meloni recently sat down with your reporter for an exclusive interview and the following has been edited for content and continuity.

The first episode of “Law & Order” was aired in September of 1990 and has been continuously successful for almost 24 years, spinning off several other shows.

To what do you attribute the success of this franchise?

Meloni: I think it’s the genius of Dick Wolf who came out of advertising and had a clear idea of what pushed people’s buttons. You have to get your message across in thirty seconds and you have to make things snappy so people recognize it. It’s almost like a jingle that brings people back.

I think he brought that concept into the series. But you have to have great story telling and his process was to make it intellectually stimulating. The stories were ripped from the headlines, which the audience instantly recognized. I think that’s what drew them in.

Christopher Melon, daughter Sophia Eva Pietra and son Dante Amadeo encouraged me to make my own decisions. As I got through my teen years it was “What college do you want to go to?’ Your decision.” “What do you want to major in? Your decision.”

“I want to be an actor. Your decision.” When I graduated college, I denied that acting was a viable career. I called a friend on a lark and asked him what he was doing with his life. He told me he was going to New York to study acting. I said, “Me too.”

Where are you going to study?

“The Neighborhood Playhouse.”

I said, “Great. What’s the number?” Once I committed, that was it.

You move seamlessly from television to film to stage. Which discipline is the most difficult?

Meloni: Without question the stage is the most difficult so it better be a project that you truly love because it’s a tough grind. When I did the Dublin gig, my family came to visit. We had plans to explore Ireland, but I couldn’t do it. I needed my off day to rest. I felt bad, but I couldn’t help it. Steptoe Inducted to Football Coaches Hall of Fame

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA— College of the Desert’s (COD) Head Football Coach Jack Steptoe was recently inducted into the California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA) Hall of Fame. Steptoe was recognized for his accomplishments as a player at Los Angeles Valley College.

“On behalf of Roadrunner Athletics I would like to congratulate Coach Steptoe for the very great honor of being inducted into the California Community College Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame,” stated Gary Plunkett, COD Director, Kinesiology & Athletics. “We are so proud that his excellence as a player has been recognized by the association. Our COD football players know they are learning from the best of the best, a Head Coach who excelled at the Community College, NCAA DI, and professional levels.”

Steptoe began his coaching career in 1984 as an assistant

football coach at College of the Desert. Steptoe has coached in the desert for more than 17 years for both the college and Palm Desert High School. Coach Steptoe works to develop players athletically and academically, preparing these young men to transfer on to four-year colleges.

His coaching skills have allowed him the joy of coaching many AllConference and All-State award recipients over the years. He was hired as COD’s Head Football Coach in 2014.

Steptoe played wide receiver at Los Angeles Valley College in 1974. In 1975 he was all conference and the Monarchs won the conference and defeated Fresno City College in the Potato Bowl and won the mythical National Championship. He was awarded the Most Valuable Player in the game and during that season caught 38 passes Matt Collins CCCFCA PresIdent and Jack Steptoe CCCFCA and 9 touchdowns. He continued his education at the University of Utah and was the Rookie of All American nominee his Senior a veteran of the NFL as a pro the Year, made All Conference year. It was undoubtedly Berke’s vision and dedication that led to the creation of a Gilda’s Club in the Coachella Valley. Her inspiration came when, some thirteen years ago, she visited her daughter, Beth Horton, at her home in Nashville. East Valley School Adding More Technology

By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, Calif.,– An Indio elementary school will add more than 70 new computers to its classrooms, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation.

Lyndon Johnson Elementary, one of 21 primary schools in the Desert Sands Unified School District received a Coachella Valley Spotlight grant to “close academic and resource gaps” at the school.

“These days, the use of computers is an essential part of the academic environment,” said Dr. Barry Stockhamer, Principal of Lyndon Johnson Elementary.

“This Berger Foundation grant will help us level the playing field for a low socio-economic area by providing needed computers to help ensure this group of youngsters can be competitive and successful.”

The computers will be used primarily in grades 1st-5th.

Most students are now required to take Common Core state standardized tests electronically.

With the added computers, Lyndon Johnson Elementary will have a 1:1 ratio of tested students to computers. The computers will also be used for individual and project work, which will in turn teach the students how to navigate software and the Internet.

“Many of these students do not have computers at home, but they need to learn the skills of the 21st century,” said Catharine Reed, Senior Program Officer for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “By partnering with the school to bring computers into the classroom, we are preparing these young people for their futures.”

Lyndon Johnson Elementary opened in 2000. The student body consists of about 560 kids, ages 5-11, in kindergarten through fifth grades. At least 85 percent of the school’s student body is considered socioeconomically disadvantaged and living in poverty.

“With state standardized tests going digital, computers

are no longer optional classroom materials, ” said Mike Stutz, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates CBS Local 2. “The Spotlight grant will be put to a very practical

use quickly at Lyndon Johnson Elementary.”

Medicare Spending on Hepatitis C Drugs Soared 15-Fold

By Desert Star Staff The US government’s Medicare insurance program spent $4.5 billion in 2014 on hepatitis C drugs ‒ more than 15 times what it spent in 2013. The drastic increase is thanks to three recently approved drugs that hit the market last year, a new report shows.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Sovaldi for the treatment of hepatitis C in December 2013.

The drug, which costs $84,000 for a 12-week course of treatment, accounted for more than $3 billion of the government’s spending the following year.

Another drug, Harvoni, hit the market in October 2014, and accounted for $670 million in just three months.

Spending on a third drug, Olysio ‒ which is often taken in conjunction with Sovaldi ‒ reached $821 million, according to a joint report by ProPublica

The high prices come even though the government is able to secure discounts, with Medicaid receiving a 23.1 percent rebate on brand-name drugs and the Department of Veterans Affairs receiving up to a 44 percent discount on Sovaldi, according to Health Affairs. Those federal programs, as well as private insurers, took a more restrictive approach to the drugs, requiring patients be in advanced stages of liver disease before approving them for the expensive regimen.

Sen. Ber nie Sanders (I-Vermont) has criticized the costs of the drugs, calling the expensive price tag a “moral issue.”

“The cost of Sovaldi is not only an economic issue in terms of the impact of the cost of this drug on the VA, on Medicaid, on Medicare, it is a moral issue, and that is how many people in this country will suffer, how

many will die very painful deaths because of the excessive costs of this particular product,” Sanders said in a written statement to ProPublica.

Sovaldi falls under the Medicare Part D program, which requires the private insurance companies which administer Part D on the government’s behalf to cover all medically necessary drugs for any indication approved by the FDA or recommended in clinical guidelines.

Part D spent approximately $286 million on earlier-generation hepatitis C drugs in 2013, Sean Cavanugh, director of Medicare and deputy administrator at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), told ProPublica and the Washington Post.

The new drugs, combined with other expensive specialty medications for the disease that are expected to be approved by the end of 2015, are threatening April 1, 2015

to dramatically increase the government’s spending on Part D. In 2013, the government spent $65 billion on Part D, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. That figure doesn’t include monthly premiums paid by patients, ProPublica said.

Under Part D, patients pay $320 before Medicare’s standard drug deductible kicks in, and must pay $4,700 out of pocket ‒ or about five days of the 12-week Sovaldi regimen ‒ before they are covered by the program’s catastrophic coverage. At that point, Medicare picks up 80 percent of the cost, health plans pay 15 percent and patients pay the remaining five percent.

About 350,000 Medicare beneficiaries have hepatitis C, although less than half of them are aware they have the disease, Health Affairs reported, based on its analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Just under three million people in the US are estimated to have hepatitis C, according to a paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in March 2014.

That paper was also based on the NHANES. The ballooning price tag for the disease was predicted in a November report by the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, which anticipated that, by 2018, total global pharmaceutical spending will increase to $1.3 trillion. Of that, about $100 billion will be spent on hepatitis C drugs.

Medicare officials said they are watching the costs carefully, and early indications suggest that 2015’s spending is on track to match or even exceed last

year’s, Cavanaugh said.

“We’re all waiting to see when it plateaus or when it possibly goes back down,” he said in an interview with ProPublica. “When will that pentup demand be sated?”

States are also spending heavily on the new hepatitis C drugs. Preliminary data shows that state Medicaid programs for the poor collectively spent $1.2 billion on the drugs in the first nine months of 2014.

Despite the high cost, Solvadi (alone or in combination with Olysio) and Harvoni have a 90 percent or higher cure rate for hepatitis C, a much higher rate than previous treatments. They also have fewer harmful side effects. Many doctors believe that the better quality of life that the drugs provide justifies the high cost of the medication.

“Curing hepatitis C will likely go on to prevent liver cancer, go on to prevent patients needing liver transplantation, go on to save healthcare dollars down the road,” Dr. Adam Peyton, a liver specialist at the University of Miami Health System in Florida, who prescribed $13.5 million worth of hepatitis C drugs in Part D last year, told ProPublica.

“It’s upsetting that there’s been so much negative publicity for such a positive breakthrough in medicine.”

But some reports show that the cost isn’t worth the longterm savings. To treat the eligible patients in the US with the new drugs could cost an additional $65 billion in the next five years, but the offsetting savings would only be $16 billion, a paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in mid-March found. www.desertstarweekly.com

New Campaign Provides Helpful Safety Tips

By Paul Netter Sometimes, a teachable moment can become a lifesaving one, too.

One such moment occurred recently in Montebello when the driver of a minivan apparently suffered a blown tire and crashed into a power pole, bringing 16,000-volt power lines down across the hood of his vehicle and over the crash scene.

With the driver trapped in his van by energized lines and nearby fences electrified, it was a scene fraught with danger. Or, in the words of Montebello Fire Department Capt. Fernando Palaez, the most “horrific” scene of its kind he has witnessed.

“I’m thinking because of the voltage that was around him and because there was a fire hydrant only a couple of feet from him that he could have taken out, he is very fortunate to be alive,” he said. “I mean water and energized … everything was there for a deadly disaster.”

For several crucial reasons, however, a disaster was avoided.

Most importantly, the driver stayed in his vehicle. Also, no one tried to approach the van, onlookers kept their distance and no one touched anything that was electrified. The police and fire departments also kept the area safe until Southern California Edison (SCE) crews arrived to deenergize the power lines.

“I think a lot of it was police education, immediately. Then fire getting there immediately,” said Palaez, stationed only about seven blocks away. “Nobody was approaching the car. They definitely knew the car was hands off.

There are lessons in the accident — which took about an hour to play out on a January night — for everyone. And one of the main lessons is to avoid coming in contact with power lines and to always assume that power lines are energized and dangerous.

SCE will soon launch a territory-wide campaign to educate its customers about these dangers. The utility is reaffirming its commitment to educate the public about power-line safety by encouraging customers to “Stay Aware. Stay Safe.”

Many things beside accidents, including high or Santa Ana winds, rainstorms

and even metallic balloons cause downed power lines. People should never approach or touch them or anything in contact with them and call 911 immediately.

On average, there are 400 electrocutions annually in the U.S., according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Of those, 9 percent occur when ladders contact power lines and 5 percent happen when people contact them.

Jose Mercado helped found the Hispanic Arborist Association and serves as its executive director. He partnered with SCE last year to increase awareness around power lines to ensure the safety of tree and landscape workers.

“Sometimes, only days after a session, we’ve been told about a job that involved trees and power lines where Edison was called,” he said. “[Edison] came

out and cleared the branches around the power line and we were able to do our job safely.

If not for that, we’re probably looking at a major injury.”

Mercado encouraged those who are considering tree trimming to call a professional.

People should also stay at least 10 feet away from power lines and never climb into trees near them.

“Whether they’re overhead or downed, safety awareness around power lines is absolutely crucial for our customers,” said James Mackenzie, SCE principal manager of Corporate Safety Programs. “We want our customers to be informed and aware so they can always make the right decisions around power lines.”

Navy Petty Officer Joshua Kouma, serves aboard Littoral Combat Ships

By Desert Star Staff SAN DIEGO – A 2001 West Valley High School graduate and Hemet, California native is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of a capable crew working aboard one of the country’s most versatile combat ships.

Petty Officer 1st Class Joshua Kouma is a mineman and a member of Mine Warfare Detachment 2, which can serve aboard both variants of littoral combat ships based in San Diego.

Kouma is part of a 20-person crew, one of three detachments that assist in the manning of both the Independence class and Freedom class of the littoral combat ship. Each detachment has a specific mission once they are aboard the LCS platform. MIW Det. 2 is responsible for mine search and destroy missions that the LCS platforms are able to conduct.

The LCS has a unique crewing concept called “3-2-1,” where three crews serve aboard two different littoral combat ships, one of which is deployed. This innovative manning concept allows the LCS to spend more time forward deployed without

overtaxing the crew.

As a 32-year-old with numerous responsibilities, Kouma is learning about himself as a Sailor and a person. He is also getting a firsthand look at the LCS, and its ability to deliver a lethal punch while operating in coastal regions as well as on open oceans.

Designed to defeat threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft, The USS Freedom is 388 feet long and 58 feet wide and weighs nearly 3,400 tons fully loaded. Twin gas-turbine engines push the ship through the water at more than 40 knots.

“So far, I have been on three mine hunting ships, been assigned to two repair facilities and been forward deployed one time,” said Kouma.

The path to becoming an LCS Sailor is a long one.

Following an 18-month training pipeline, Sailors have to qualify on a simulator that is nearly identical to the ship. This intense and realistic training pipeline allows sailors to execute their roles and responsibilities immediately upon stepping onboard.

“I am trained as a remote operated vehicle and a sonar operator. I have also completed the standard LCS training as well,” said Kouma.

But more than just their primary job, Kouma said it’s important for Sailors to work together and often do work outside their normal tasks.

As a crewmember aboard one of the Navy’s newest ships, Kouma said he knows they are building a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes.

“The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is designed to provide war fighting capabilities and operational flexibility that contribute to maritime dominance and provide improved access for the joint force,” said Capt. Warren Buller II, Commodore of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One (LCSRON 1), based in San Diego. “The ship requires the addition of a mission package comprised of the primary mission module plus the mission module crew and aviation detachment to conduct its primary missions. The Sailors assigned to them, epitomize the ‘can do’ spirit of LCS.” Kouma said it is an exciting

time to be in the Navy, but that it’s not an easy path to take.

“I love seeing different cultures and travelling around the world. I enjoy trying new foods and opening my eyes to see what is out there,” said Kouma.

Through innovative planning, the design of systems, and crew requirements, the LCS platform allows the fleet to increase forward presence and optimize its personnel, improving the ability of the Navy to be where it matters, when it matters.

Disney’s ‘Newsies’ and DVDs for Holiday Fun On opening night “Newsies” was greeted with cheers throughout in appreciation for some of the most spectacular dance numbers you will ever see performed on stage. The TonyAward winning choreography is by Christopher Gattelli with a Tony Award-winning score by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,“ “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin”) and lyricist Jack Feldman. The show’s book, inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899 led by newsboy Kid Blink against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers, was written by fourtime Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (“Kinky Boots”).

The original film “Newsies,” starring Christian Bale as Jack Kelly, leader of the newsboy strike, was not a success at the box office, but when it was released on home video it developed a cult following.

Young viewers responded to the grit and daring of these young teens who fought against the unfair practices of the major newspaper publishers who raised distribution prices at their expense. In 1899 these struggling boys had to pay for the papers they sold to the public and the rate hike, even though small, was crushing for them.

The stage version of “Newsies,” now at the Pantages, introduces seven brand-new songs by the original film team of Menken and Feldman

and includes a song written specifically for the tour called “Letter from the Refuge” sung

by Crutchie (Zachary Sayle).

Dan DeLuca, as Jack Kelly, opens the show on a New York rooftop singing “Santa Fe,” a song about a better place where he can live his dreams. When Jack rallies his fellow Newsies to strike he’s befriended by a young newspaper journalist, Kate (Stephanie Styles) who sings and dances with ease.

Angela Grovey plays songstress Medda Larkin, a feisty lady who can belt out a song. She, like Kate, is impressed not only by Jack’s spunk and drive, but also by his artistic talents.

The imaginative scenic design by Tobin Ost, with the original Broadway projection design by Sven Ortel, creates the feel of New York skyscrapers and city streets. And there is never a lull in the high-energy action under the direction of Jeff Calhoun.

Everyone on stage is dynamic and the dancers, too numerous to mention, are absolutely amazing as they leap, jump, tap and flip. The dance numbers throughout are show stoppers.

Family Wants Answers after Murder in Coachella

By Angela Monroe COACHELLA -- 20-year-old Anthony De La Torre is dead, and two other people are hurt after a shooting at a home on Mariana Avenue.

A 19-year old man remains in the hospital, a 20-year-old woman has been released.

The family of the man who was killed reached out to KMIR saying they’re worried about crime in Coachella, and what’s being done about it.

While investigating this weekend’s shooting, we learned that law enforcement is confirming an increase in violent crime in Coachella.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says beginning last year violent crime was on the rise according to FBI data, and it appears the trend is continuing.

Meantime, the family of this weekend’s shooting victim says they just want more done to

protect the people of Coachella, and for his death not to be in vain.

“Just a wonderful person, he was just always so happy. He didn’t deserve what happened to him, he wasn’t into gangs, you know he loved his family, he was all about his family,” said Anthony’s sister.

Anthony’s family fears retaliation, that’s why their faces aren’t on camera, but they do want answers and justice.

“They were at a party, and I guess some guys came in with a handkerchief on their face, heard they shot three times, told people to get out of there, and then they just started shooting, and unfortunately Anthony was hit,” said Anthony’s grandfather.

Anthony’s family believes his death is part of a growing trend of violent crime in Coachella.

Last month, a man was shot and killed in the city.

Then a couple of weeks later,

a 19-year-old survived a shooting there.

Four people, including a 15-year-old girl, were shot at a party on Bagdad Avenue earlier this month.

There have been no arrests in any of those cases.

Anthony’s grandfather wants to see the sheriff’s department do more, “We’ve had about nine calls to 9-1-1, and nothing’s ever done, they come in, write a report, they say we’re going to get back to you.

And we never hear back.”

The sheriff’s department says there has been an increase in violent crime, and the majority of shootings are gang related.

They tell us they investigate each and every one thoroughly, but one of their main problems is getting viable witnesses.

Coachella has a lower ratio of officers to residents.

A sheriff’s supervisor tells us Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage,

Palm Desert and La Quinta all have about double the number of officers for their population.

Anthony’s family just wants his murder solved, for a young man who had much more life to live.

“He wanted to go into the Marine Corps, he was waiting for his younger brother to finish school, he didn’t want to leave him behind, they wanted a better life,

they wanted to get out of here,” said Anthony’s sister.

Anthony’s family says the community needs to do its part too, by reporting any violence particularly if people hear gunshots.

The sheriff’s department echoes that, saying they need the public’s help in solving these crimes. Source KMIR

Coachella Valley Hosts 53rd Annual Rotary Baseball Tourney COACHELLA VALLEY – It is not quite the Max Preps Holiday Classic basketball showcase that took over the desert a few months back, but the Coachella Valley is in for another treat of excellent competition with the return of the 53rd annual Coachella Valley Rotary Baseball Tournament.

The tournament runs from Monday to Friday, with a total of twelve teams playing three games against different teams between Monday and Wednesday. On Thursday, two semifinals will take place between the top three teams from groups A, B and C and the best second-place team.

Friday, the winners will square off in the championship.

Resident Palm Desert Aztecs, Indio Rajahs, Xavier Prep Saints, Cathedral City Lions, Coachella Valley Arab, Shadow Hills Knights, Desert Christian Academy Conquerors and La Quinta Blackhawks were scheduled to join the 2014 Rotary champion Palos Verdes Peninsula Panthers in the tourney. Unfortunately, the Panthers double-booked and are participating in the Anaheim Lions Tournament instead of an

opting to defend their title.

In addition to most of the desert schools, the Simi Valleybased Royal Highlanders, the Riverside-based Notre Dame Titans, the Perris Panthers and the San Jacinto Tigers have all signed on to be a part of the long-running baseball event.

Because it falls in the middle of the season, the tournament acts as the final, or among the final preparatory matches before league-play really takes off. This will be a great opportunity for the Aztecs, a team with to-the-moon expectations, to show how they stack up against good opponents in a high-stress, something-toplay-for atmosphere.

Palm Desert head coach Darol Salazar is looking to build off this tournament and improve some little things heading into the DVL season. “We like to play at a certain level,” Coach Salazar said, “and it doesn’t matter who we play. We want to work on some things.”

Not just a learning experience for some, the baseball meet will also serve as a measuring stick and a preview of which DVL teams are the contenders and which are pretenders.

First-time business owner, Vanessa Elaine Martinez, is sure to make a splash once Valley residents know what’s so special about her brand new store.

to persevere and keep moving forward. I’m honored to help the soldiers any way I can. It’s such a rewarding feeling,” Martinez said.

V’s Rack offers a variety of specialty items both new and gently-used from designer and local name brands to antiques.

Martinez, 27, is a certified Dermagraphic Permanent Cosmetic Specialist and also resides in Palm Desert. She has volunteered her expertise to help veterans remove their scars at Scars to Freedom since 2008.

Now she carries that dedication to her new business.

Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert

By Desert Star Weekly PALM DESERT, California - Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert, The Galen and the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden is pleased to announce its role as an activation site for the launch of Los Angelesbased artist Zoe Crosher’s chapter of The Manifest Destiny Billboard Project on Interstate 10. Crosher’s billboards, titled LA-LIKE: Shangri LA’d, form the ninth chapter of the Los Angeles Nomadic Division’s (LAND) crosscountry billboard art program. To celebrate the billboard unveiling in April 2015 on Interstate 10 heading west from Desert Center into Riverside County, the museum has commissioned a living floral wall that parallels Crosher’s billboards and there will also be a sound performance by Scott Benzel, a project hub, and an artist talk.

The Manifest Destiny

Billboard Project is a series of artist-produced billboards and activations that will unfold along Interstate 10 Freeway from Florida to California through spring 2015. The project was conceived by Crosher and is cocurated by the artist and LAND’s Director and Curator, Shamim M. Momin. Using the concept of Manifest Destiny - America’s territorial expansion across North America - the artists explore this problematic and layered history.

Crosher’s chapter, entitled LA-LIKE: Shangri-LA’d, was created by staging a lush landscape in Los Angeles. She photographed the entropic installation onsite to track its transforming and decaying façade. This wall of flora embodied the fantasy of Los Angeles and the promise of the western ideal. As the billboards unfold over space and time traveling west along Interstate 10

toward the Palm Springs area, the lush green foliage-symbolic of the promise of abundanceis in stark contrast to the barren desert landscape, and becomes increasingly withered and brown. The falsity of the romanticized notion of Manifest Destiny appears in her billboards as the promise of riches slowly degrades, just as the intangible American Dream can also slip away.

The launch of these billboards is presented in conjunction with Crosher’s installation at Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert. The installation, titled Expanded LA-LIKE: The Actual Shangri-LA’d Disappearing Wall, includes various activations and events taking place during the opening weekend celebration in Palm Desert and Desert Center on April 3 and 4, 2015. A new version of the flora wall as depicted on Crosher’s billboards

will be installed on the museum’s grounds in collaboration with Palm Desert floral artist Briana Burt of Eventscape. The wall will be unveiled to the public on April 1, and will degrade over time.

In addition, Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert has commissioned Scott Benzel’s Desert Center (Composition I-10, Mvmt IV: Dusk), a sound composition designed to respond to the traffic patterns and harmonics of the Interstate 10 freeway. The first iteration of the performance takes place in the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden during 1st Friday at The Galen from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 3. The second performance will take place at the site it was originally conceived for, a remote palm tree-studded location in Desert Center, at dusk on Saturday, April 4.

Religious Freedom Laws not Used Against Gays

By Rachel Zoll and David Crary AP National Writers NEW YORK (AP) - Religious freedom laws like the one causing an uproar in Indiana have never been successfully used to defend discrimination against gays - and have rarely been used at all, legal experts say.

However, past may not be prologue in these cases, since gays have only recently won widespread legalization of same-sex marriage, and religious conservatives are now scrambling for new legal strategies to blunt the trend.

“There’s an inability to look to the past as a reliable predictor of the future on this,” said Robert Tuttle, a church-state expert at George Washington University School of Law. “If what you’re saying is that it can be certain it won’t be used - you can’t know that because this is now a different situation.”

Last week, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed the state Religious Freedom Restoration Act, giving heightened protections to businesses and individuals who object on religious grounds to providing certain services.

The law triggered a swift and intense backlash from gay rights supporters, businesses such as Apple, and some states, which barred government-funded travel to Indiana.

Critics of the law say the intent is to discriminate against gays. They fear, for example, that caterers, florists, photographers and bakers with religious objections to same-sex marriage will be allowed to refuse to do business with gay couples.

Supporters of the law say it will only give religious objectors a chance to bring their case before a judge.

On Tuesday, Pence said he wants the Legislature to present him a bill by the end of the week clarifying that the new law does not allow discrimination against gays.

Pence said he does not believe lawmakers intended “to create a license to discriminate.”

But he added: “I can appreciate that that’s become the perception, not just here in Indiana but all across the country.”

Douglas Laycock, a constitutional scholar at the University of Virginia Law School who helped win passage of the 1993 federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, said no one has ever successfully used such laws to override nondiscrimination statutes. He expressed frustration that gay rights advocates seem to be ignoring this in their attack on the Indiana law.

“I don’t know if they don’t know that, or whether they’re pandering to their base,” Laycock said.

an increasing number of states over the past three years. Rho noted that when Indiana’s bill was moving through the Legislature, its supporters rejected amendments that would have limited its potential to allow discrimination.

She also noted that Pence signed the bill at a private ceremony attended by several leaders of conservative groups that have campaigned against same-sex marriage.

“The language reflects the desire to use these laws in a certain way, to be able to discriminate and cause harm,” Rho said.

The federal law was enacted in 1993 with near-unanimous bipartisan support and was aimed mainly at protecting religious minorities from laws that inadvertently infringed on their practices. Among the few recent cases to invoke the federal law: an Apache leader who protested government seizure of eagle feathers that he used in a religious ceremony, and a Sikh woman who sued after the IRS fired her for wearing a ceremonial 3-inch dagger to work.

States began passing their own Religious Freedom Restoration Acts after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1997 that the federal law didn’t apply to the states. Twenty states now have their own Religious Freedom Restoration Acts.

Yet, the number of cases involving these laws has remained small. The laws, while of intense interest to religious groups, weren’t widely known, and many state judges didn’t understand them or interpreted them very narrowly, so “they’ve been under-enforced,” Laycock said.

“The bottom line is very few cases - and even fewer wins for the religious side,” Laycock said.

Tuttle said many people assumed that the protections applied only to religious nonprofits, not for-profit corporations, which further limited the potential for claims under the laws. That changed last year, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Hobby Lobby case that some private businesses with religious objections could opt out of the birth control coverage requirement in the Affordable Care Act. Partly in response to that case, conservative lawmakers in several states proposed a new wave of religious-protection legislation aimed at shielding people from private discrimination lawsuits if they felt that doing business with same-sex couples violated their religious beliefs.

Arizona passed such a law in

2014, but Republican Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed it amid intense criticism from major corporations and political leaders from both parties.

Now similar national pressure is being applied to Indiana and Arkansas, where enactment of a religious freedom law is expected soon. Source KMIR
