By Julie Pace AP White House Correspondent WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton spent nearly two years tiptoeing around a decision to run for president that much of the political world assumed was a done deal.

Clinton didn’t make a final call until the holidays. She spent her annual Christmas vacation last year in the Dominican Republic wading through 500 pages of

memos and polling analysis, and discussing the material with her husband, former two-term President Bill Clinton.

When Clinton returned to New York in the new year, there was no meeting with staff or email to friends to announce her candidacy. The former senator and secretary of state simply started telling advisers to move forward with hiring and find a campaign headquarters.

Clinton formally launched her campaign Sunday in an online video. The announcement cements her status as the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, back within sight of an elusive ambition and a history-making turn as the nation’s first female commander in chief.

Desert Spirit Presented by the American Cancer Society

This is the Deserts Premier Gala to fight Cancer. The gala honored several women in the fight against this terrible disease.

The Jackie Lee Houston Spirit Award honored Lisa Houston, President and CEO of Find. The caregiver Award was given to Patricia Carr-Bosley, who has lost family members stricken with cancer.. The Inspirational Award was given to Naomi Judd who was unable to attend. Naomi Judd was part of the Country duo, The Judds.

Naomi contracted Hepatitis C and uses her talents to help people by speaking out in many forums.

The Celebration of Life honoree was Sally West Brooks, RN, MA. Sally co-founded the Desert Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She has continued her fight against Cancer by being active with the American Cancer Society both

locally and nationally. Sally lost her beloved husband to cancer in 2013.

The entertainment featured the Tony Award-winning actor, Director, singer and Broadway star, Jason Alexander. Alexander is best known for his portrayal as George Costanza on the TV show Seinfield. Who knew that this Actor had this kind of voice and stage persona that could thrill an audience? He is a man of many talents, Entertainer, Director, producer, Author, Actor, magician and so many others during his career. He garnered seven Emmys, four Golden Globes and numerous TV and comedy awards.

The Coachella Valley is so fortunate to have a Symphony that could stand up to the best of them. The talent at this Symphony Concert is to be enjoyed by everyone in our community. The

Symphony played the first half of the night to the applause from the guests. They started the concert with Hooray for Hollywood and played a lot of contemporary music. They are considered the musical Gem of the Desert. They accompanied Alexander during his whole performance in the direction of Gary Berkson.

Alexander came on stage and told about his dreams as a child and how some never came true, but he tried. He sang, and the audience was so impressed with his voice and talent. He is a true song and dance man and has proven it on Broadway. He has a fantastic voice and still has a comedic tone to some of his act. That showed when he brought people from the audience on stage to perform with him. It was a hilarious skit that had the audience laughing out loud. He got a standing ovation at the end of his performance. Everyone

However, just because the condo tax break option makes sense in theory, that doesn’t mean it will work out, especially for highincome clients.

S o h e re a re s o m e considerations on how write-offs can be taken on vacation-rental property.

Rental property (aka, beach condo) is primarily identified in one of two ways: Property rented less than 15 days a year and Property rented more than 15 days a year as a vacation home. Property rented less than 15 days, is considered a nonrental property, therefore nothing should be filed on Schedule E of the 1040 relative to rental income or expenses. For these places, any income and expenses received from a vacation home are excluded from tax reporting (both income and expenses).

While this may be beneficial from an income exclusion standpoint, most beach condo purchasers are usually geared toward personal tax write-offs rather than the rental income production, leaving this option very limited as a true tax benefit against a client’s current income earnings.

The owner of these properties can deduct mortgage interest, property taxes or a casualty loss on the common Schedule A, however, all these write-offs are subject to the limitations of Schedule A or the specific line item limitations within the schedule’s deductions. The

deduct all expenses or not. If you had a net profit (including all rental expenses and depreciation), you’re allowed to deduct all of your rental expenses. If you had a net loss from rental activities, your rental expenses are limited (usually up to rental income), with all excess expenses allowed to carry over to future years.

When the rental property no longer becomes a personal use dwelling, the exception of passive loss write-offs allows up to $25,000 against nonpassive income. This write-off can be limited or excluded all together, based on modified adjusted gross income (MAGI).

Therefore, if your MAGI is in excess of $100,000, losses are limited to 50 percent of MAGI

and $150,000. Once MAGI is over $150,000, write-offs are completely eliminated, but may be carried over as future losses, however can only offset future income. The rules of owning vacation properties and the writeoffs of losses and expenses are complex. High income earners face even greater limitations according to the amount of their modified adjusted gross income.

We have some service (and “companion”) dogs that are considerably larger. Dear M.S.: The association should be very careful in restricting the caregiver necessitated by your aunt’s disability. The board should consult its counsel regarding whether or not it must bend its rules and allow the caregiver to stay, in order to help your aunt.

Furthermore, under Civil Code 51.3(b)(7), the caregiver may qualify as a “Permitted Health Care Resident” and stay up to 90 days in the residence while the disabled person is hospitalized but expected to return to the care giver’s care.

The association is required under the Fair Housing Act to make reasonable accommodations for your disabled aunt, and accommodations may include reasonable steps to permit the caregiver. If the association unreasonably restricts the care giver, it may run afoul of the fair housing laws.

Dear J.C.: No, the association cannot discriminate against children.

Under fair housing laws, this is “familial status” discrimination. If the board desires to ban playing, skating or biking in the streets, it should ban it as to all residents, not only children. To single out children is a violation of the Fair Housing Act, and is frankly also unnecessary. Ban the unsafe activity, not the participants.

There are some particular places where children may need to be accompanied for safety reasons, such as at the pool or in the association gym.

Richard LaGravenese’s Journey to Success as Writer and Director

By Beverly Cohn Part 1: The Making of The Last Five Years Ask the average movie buff if he or she knows who Richard LaGravenese is and the answer is probably going to be no. In the same sentence add that he wrote Behind the Candelabra, Water for Elephants, P.S. I Love You, Freedom Writers, Paris, je t’aime, Beloved, The Horse Whisperer, The Mirror Has Two Faces, The Bridges of Madison County, A Little Princess, The Ref, Erin Brockovich, The Fisher King and Rude Awakening. Then, of course, the light goes on, as LaGravenese’s body of work is immediately recognizable as he written some of the most emotionally profound Hollywood scripts.

LaGravenese’s latest film is The Last Five Years. Originally a musical written for the New York stage by Jason Robert Brown, LaGravenese adapted and directed the material for his screen version. The film stars Anna Kendrick in the lead role of Cathy with Jeremy Jordan co-starring as her husband Jamie. Basically, the narrative told through songs, deconstructs the hills and valleys of their disintegrating marriage, each of who tells the story from a different starting and ending point.

Mr. LaGravenese recently sat down with your journalist for an exclusive interview to discuss, among other personal topics, his latest film. The following has been edited for content and continuity.

Among your vast list of screenwriting credits, you wrote two of my all-time favorite films – Bridges of Madison County and Horse Whisperer. All your characters are so fully fleshed out. There’s never a “cardboard” moment and that’s your signature. You write fabulous characters.

LaGravenesse: Thank you.

That’s so nice to hear.

“The Last Five Years” was performed off-Broadway in New York. Did you see the stage version?

LaGravenesse: I didn’t see the original production, which was in 2002, but I did see the last one in April of 2013, which was the revival that Jason Robert Brown directed. I had already written the screenplay by then and we started shooting in June.

How did you originally become familiar with the score?

LaGravenese: My friend Todd Graff directed a movie called Camp, which is the reason I wanted Anna because she was in Camp. He and I are best buddies and go to theatre all the time. I kept hearing about this score, but I had missed the show so he gave it to me.

Since you had written the screenplay before you saw

the play, what attracted you to the story originally?

LaGravenese: I heard the score and being a musical theatre fan, all I need is the score to fall in love with a musical.

There are many musicals that I’ve never seen but loved just because I heard the score. In the early part of the turn of the century, around 2004 or 2005, as I mentioned, I got the score and listened to it over and over.

I fell in love with it and started to imagine it a small, independent, little jewel of a movie.

How did it finally morph into a film?

LaGravenese: In 2006, I was doing a movie called P.S. I Love You, and Sherie Rene Scott who played Cathy in the original production came in to audition and the first thing I said was, ‘Oh my God. That’s from The Last Five Years. I told her my idea and her then husband Kurt Deutsch had a company that makes original cast recordings for Broadway shows and they did the original album. I met him, loved the idea of doing this and then Kurt introduced me to Jason. It was not your usual idea of doing this kind of musical as a film, but Jason very graciously let me play with it. Over the years, I kept working on it with him and alone. I wanted to do it outside of the system. I didn’t want any studio involvement. I didn’t want to be told that I had to impose anything on it. I wanted to have the freedom to do it for a very small budget and to do it the way I wanted to. I knew being a musical theatre purist, I wanted to keep the show in its original form as much as possible, which was a risk, and I knew it was a risk, and the only way you can take a risk, is to do something inexpensively.

Did your script differ a lot from Brown’s original script?

LaGravenese: Script-wise no. It’s all Brown’s music and structurally it’s entirely his show in that all of Cathy’s songs start at the end and go to the beginning, and all of Jamie’s songs start at the beginning and go to the end.

The biggest difference is that on stage it’s done as monologues.

They do not sing to each other.

They sing to the audience. They only sing to each other when he proposes during a song called “The Next Ten Minutes.” My idea was to have them sing to each other when it was appropriate because then it became a playable scene and dramatically it was really interesting because it wasn’t just a person’s point of view who was singing the song, but it was also how you were hearing it – the effect it has on you and how men and women, although they love each other, can be singing different songs to each other and never really understand the meaning.

The idea of shooting the film in this way was a slippery slope as it could have been boring.

Steven Meizler’s cinematography is stunning and the film is never boring. How did you decide the look of the film to avoid that pitfall?

LaGravenese: I wanted the pacing to be organic. It isn’t about a lot of cuts being thrown at you. I wanted it to take its time and breathe.

When you were writing, did you have Anna in mind?

LaGravenese: You have to understand while I was working on this, I never thought it was going to actually happen. This was just something I was doing in my spare time for myself, but then when it did become a reality, yes, Anna was my first choice.

Generally, I tend not to write with specific actors in mind because it blocks my writing. But again, I didn’t write this. Except for little bits of dialogue I wrote here and there, the content is all Jason’s.

How did you find Jeremy?

LaGravenese: He auditioned. I saw him in Joyful Noise and in the television series Smash. It was very important that I had actors who could sing. I didn’t want actors who were good actors but worried about their voices. Because the parts are so emotional, and the characters go through so much, I wanted the actors to be very confident that they could perform. So the singing had to be second nature to them and for Anna and Jeremy, it is. Jeremy auditioned with the song; “If I Didn’t Believe In You.” I knew April 15, 2015

that if he could do that song, he could do the rest of the movie because that song is like a little one-act play. He starts off very supportive and loving towards his wife and then he winds up being very cruel and angry.

emotionally involved that they could hear, ‘Oh my God,’ after I said ‘cut.’ They would look at each other and say ‘Richard liked it.’ I would literally say cut through tears because I was so emotionally involved with it.

How long was the shoot and how did you set each scene with the actors?

LaGravenese: We shot the movie in 21 days from June to July in 2013. In April, I had them for five days and that was the first time they met. I had my cinematographer with his camera and a piano player in an empty room with blocks.

We went over every song. I had specific staging. I had very specific ideas and certain things came out of rehearsals like doing “If I Didn’t Believe You,” which was sung in one take. I said to them, ‘Improvise the argument and then just go wherever you want and Steven will follow you.’

When Steven and I looked at the rehearsal footage, we designed the movie based on that footage.

I would work with the actors on set who always had terrific ideas and were very collaborative.

That’s why your work is so wonderful.

LaGravenesse: That’s because I’m a nerd.

Did the script change in any way during the shoot?

LaGravenese: No, just locations and certain ideas. I remember I wanted a helicopter shot and that was going to be too expensive. So then it became putting the camera in the back seat of the car over the Verrazano Bridge.

Many of the scenes are very emotional. Did the actors have time to decompress?

LaGravenese: Yes, but you don’t want too much decompression because you want to keep it going and get more. For me, you hold your breath because of camera angles and because of the performances. Then you get that click like, ‘oh I got it!’ Then I would a say to them, ‘I feel like I have it; now do just for you.

Do what you want’ and often, wonderful things would come out of that because they were relaxed and had freedom knowing that I’ve gotten the take and that I’m pleased. That’s pretty how much it worked. I would get so

What’s the big advantage of wearing both hats and is there a disadvantage?

LaGravenese: The most wonderful advantage about this project is that I didn’t write the material. I was just adapting it into film. I had so much confidence in it and loved it so much. I had the freedom just to direct and I’d never had that experience before. When I’m doing both, because I’m primarily a writer, I worry about the script.

I’m always second guessing the script and not believing in it and I don’t have as much confidence. So with this, I had total confidence in the material and that was very liberating.

When I interviewed Woody Allen, he said that he writes notes on little scraps of paper and puts them in a drawer and once a year he goes through all the notes. How do you keep track of your ideas?

LaGravenese: I have little journals. I wish I more organized like him – like having a drawer – but they’re kind of all over the place and I go through them, which is what I’m doing right now. I’m going to be writing an original script so I’m looking at all my ideas in bits and pieces.

Sometimes you start with an idea for a scene or sometimes it’s a concept for a story. You have to have the discipline to write down your ideas because as I’ve gotten older I think I’ll remember this idea, but you don’t. It’s terrible.

Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway - Weekend with the King

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – This is a story about a house. While most houses don’t warrant a story, this one does. It’s a landmark known as the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway or Graceland of the West. Fans flock here to peek into the life of the King of Rock and Roll, and you can experience the grandeur and glory of this house, located at 1350 Ladera Circle in the Las Palmas district, at the 21st Annual Weekend with the King, May 2-3.

The house was built in 1960

by Robert Alexander, a millionaire developer of Palm Springs, originally known as the Alexander Estate. Later it was dubbed “the house of tomorrow” by Look magazine for its modernism design, high-tech appliances and vaulted windows.

Robert, and his wife, Helene, were lauded for their royalty status, support of civic events and philanthropy. The Alexander’s also were renowned for their “daring decisions, tall

tales and tragic end.” The highsociety couple died tragically in a plane crash in the mountains east of Thousand Palms on Nov. 14, 1965, along with six other people.

The tragedy made national news. The high-society of Palms Springs were in mourning. While many people admired and envied the Alexander’s, after their deaths many reacted in a similar manner to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The Elvis connection and the Alexander’s royalty status are not the only reasons this house is worth a visit. There’s a mystery behind who actually designed it. The architectural designs were never signed. The building permits and plans were not filed until after the house was built – both very unusual circumstances.

There’s debate over whether the house may have been designed by famed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright or his topstudent, John Lautner.

Architect Bill Krisel is credited

with the design, but many question whether that is in fact totally true, including the current owners. They agree that Krisel may have been involved with the construction, but believe that he may not have been the architect.”

will be baptized and become a Christian officially and a member of the Armenian church,” Shirvanian said, slightly perplexed by all the commotion. “All I know is that she’s a famous personality.

I don’t know her in person. In any case she is welcome with her family.”

There were no details on the ceremony, and the family left the church without speaking to reporters.

The members of reality TV’s first family arrived in a private jet at Israel’s international airport on Monday for what was described

as a private two-day visit.

All were captured on camera disembarking their plane and the images featured prominently on Israeli websites. They were quickly whisked away in a dark black SUV to a hotel in Jerusalem.

Paparazzi did their best to keep up with their movements.

The celebrities arrived from a high-profile visit to Armenia, where the Kardashian family traces its roots.

Conserve Time and Water While Growing a Garden

By Melinda Myers Reduce your workload, increase productivity and be water wise, whether you are planning, planting or already harvesting produce or enjoying beautiful floral displays from your garden.

Container gardeners may want to invest in self-watering pots. These containers have built-in reservoirs to reduce watering frequency. Commercial and homemade self-watering devices can also reduce watering frequency. Just make sure to test their effectiveness before leaving town. Or consider a one-time investment in a drip irrigation system, like the 2014 Green Thumb Award-winning Snipn-Drip Pot and Planter Soaker System especially designed for container gardens.

Drip irrigation and soaker hoses are also a great way to water in-ground plantings. By Pam Price Career Transition for Dancers, a nonprofit organization enabling dancers to define their career possibilities and develop the needed skills to excel in a variety of disciplines made a desert debut at the beautiful residence of Denise Summers Kading on April 9. Guests were welcomed onto the spacious patio sharing the limelight with interior designer Gilbert Holmes.

The gorgeous sunset with shades of pink and lavender, in the distance, was the perfect, backdrop to the event. It was as if Mother Nature choreographed the setting, enhanced by a trio of young dance students from

the Valerie Mahabir Academy of Ballet and Performing Arts in Rancho Mirage. Narendra Patel, Valerie’s husband, was all smiles looking on. Patel was called “ the most spiritual architect in America” and also just happens to be a pioneer of green building at the high end of the luxury market.

Directions: Cut the peel and pith away from two oranges and cut into neat segments. Drop into a small saucepan with the marmalade. Add the pared rind from the remaining orange, cut into long fine shreds, plus the juice. Put the pan over low heat and simmer gently for to 2 to 3 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk the melted butter into the milk with the eggs, sugar and salt.

Sift the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl and pour in the liquid ingredients. Whisk until smooth.

Heat a large, nonstick frying pan and brush with a little melted butter. Ladle the batter into the pan, allowing one ladle per pancake. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Small bubbles will appear on the surface of the pancakes when they are ready to flip over.

Stir the marmalade until smooth, then drizzle 1 tsp over the uncooked side of each pancake before turning. Continue cooking for an additional 2 minutes before removing from the pan. Cover the cooked pancakes with a towel; this prevents them from drying out.

Alvin Ailey at the Music Center and PBS on DVD Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater originated from a now fabled March, 1958 performance in New York that forever changed the perception of American dance. The company, founded by Alvin Ailey, recent posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is now under the artistic direction of Robert Battle. Mr. Battle brings the company to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center Wednesday April 15 through Sunday April19 for six performances.

The company has performed for an estimated 23 million people in 71 countries on six continents, promoting the uniqueness of African American cultural experiences through modern dance. They first appeared at the Music Center in 1998 and over the years they have been one of the most popular dance companies to regularly perform in the Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center series. This year they will perform three different programs: The Power of Ailey, The Soul of Ailey (which will feature “Odetta” a new ballet) and The Joy of Ailey.

The dynamic Los Angeles season will feature a wide variety of premiere highlights and a tribute to a civil rights icon, Odetta Holmes, an influential singer, song writer, actress and civil right activist whose repertoire included American folk music, blues, jazz and spirituals.

When President Clinton honored the singer at the White House with the National Medal of Arts and Humanities he said, “Odetta reminds us all that songs have the power to change the heart

and change the world.” And Martin Luther King, Jr. dubbed the songstress “queen of American folk music.”

Blending propulsive honky-tonk, rootsy Americana and a dash of rockabilly, the Kentucky native’s “Second Hand Heart” (set for release by Warner Bros. Records on April 14) is a resounding success across its fast-paced 10-track run. Yoakam has written all but two of the songs on the disc, and his emotive drawl has never sounded better. The shimmering “She,” tender ballad “Dreams of Clay” and irresistible title track are among the authentic standouts on the exceptional release. And I can’t remember a cover of “Man of Constant Sorrow” I’ve enjoyed as the one on “Second Hand Heart.”

Fundraiser for Young Man Killed in Coachella

By Angela Monroe COACHELLA -- A Coachella family is trying to raise money for the funeral of Anthony De La Torre, who was murdered in Coachella last month.

20-year-old Anthony was shot and killed at a house party in Coachella in March.

Two other people were shot, but survived.

There have been no arrests in the case.

This weekend they are holding a car wash at the 7-Eleven at Harrison and Sixth Street in Coachella.

It will be held again Sunday from 7am to 5pm.

Anthony’s brother spoke with us about their family’s tragic loss.

“He’d be happy to know that his friends and family are coming as one united to help our for the cost of my grandparents the ones that truly loved him a lot they raised all of us as their own kids ... The Lord always says forgive people so you know it’s hard to forgive someone but I do forgive the kid who did this to my brother cause it’s just a cycle that goes on, vengeance is not a thing that we want, it’s just love and peace for our family,” said Anthony’s brother, Steven De La Torre.

The family has also set up a gofundme account to help pay for the Anthony’s funeral.

Rock Hall Opening Doors to Ringo Starr

By David Bauder Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - The first few years after the Beatles split, Ringo Starr had bragging rights on his mates.

He was all over the radio with “It Don’t Come Easy,” ‘’Back Off Boogaloo,” ‘’Photograph” and other singles at a time that John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison went through some uneven stretches.

“I had all these hits and everybody was surprised,” Starr recalled. “I don’t know why they were, but they were.”

Everyone’s favorite genial drummer still has his pride. Already a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Beatle, Starr will be inducted this weekend as an individual, joining John, Paul and George with that distinction.

He keeps busy at age 74, touring regularly and promoting a justreleased new disc, “Postcards From Paradise.”

Besides Starr, new inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday will be Green Day, Bill Withers, Lou Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joan Jett, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the “5’’ Royales.

Starr wasn’t expecting the honor and, in fact, it has raised questions about whether there is a special Beatle entrance.

McCartney told Rolling Stone magazine recently that, when reminded Starr wasn’t in the hall

on his own, he vowed to see what he could do. “I talked to Bruce Springsteen and I talked to Dave Grohl, and they both thought he should be in. And I said I’d do the induction. That took care of it,” he said.

Rather than being nominated and voted upon by the full panel of musicians, journalists and others who choose most members, Starr was selected under a “musical excellence” category.

That category has been used four times, none before 2011.

Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said these honorees are chosen by committee. Although lobbying calls are taken, induction is a group decision. He said that any calls that come in during the process - including, presumably, McCartney’s - “are purely coincidental.”

“I only knew about it when Paul McCartney called me and said, ‘they want to honor you at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’ll be doing the speech for you. Will you accept?’” Starr said. “I said sure, how great is that?”

Only an occasional singer and lyricist with the Beatles, Starr has maintained an active recording career, particularly since getting sober in the late 1980s. Since 1992, he’s put out as many discs of original material as McCartney, his fellow Beatle survivor, even more if you didn’t count McCartney’s

classical excursions.

His “Ringo 2012” disc sold fewer than 20,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Numbers like that are why many artists of his generation stop making new music. Starr may joke onstage about how few people buy his new music, but he said making it is important to him.

“That’s where I come from you made records, you put them out,” he said. “Also, for me, it’s a great excuse to hang out with a lot of friends and a lot of great musicians. It’s part of my life. This is what I do.”

He expresses no interest in writing a book, but has written on recent discs songs that he considers mini-autobiographies looking back on slices of his life.

In “Liverpool 8,” he sang of leaving his hometown, “but I never let you down.” The song “The Other Side of Liverpool” name-checks old friends and talks about growing up poor. On the new album, “Rory and the Hurricanes” is about the band he drummed for before accepting an offer to join the Beatles, who then had less of a following than the Hurricanes. Starr had sat in for ex-Beatles drummer Pete Best a couple of times in Germany.

Could that be the best decision in rock history?

“I was as surprised as anyone when the phone call came - ‘do you want to join?’ - and I said sure, because I loved the band,” Starr said. “It was not a difficult decision

because I just loved to play with those three, not knowing where it was going to go, of course.”

Starr’s “All Starr Band” of rotating musicians, an ingenious device to keep an active live career, is already more than a quarter-century old. The current incarnation features Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather of Toto, Richard Page of Mr. Mister and Gregg Rollie of Santana. Being a featured player on at least one hit single is a job requirement, so band members can rotate in the spotlight with Ringo.

He keeps adding dates, and

By Thalia Hayden It has just been confirmed that a Coachella Festival attendee was struck and killed by a train. 23-year-old Jannik Andersen was killed on Pacific Street in Indio early Saturday morning. The San Diego

resident was pronounced dead around 3:45 am. The tracks are about four miles northeast of the festival grounds.

It is too early to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The investigation is ongoing.

Will Drake Strikeout Again on Weekend Two?

By Dan Marinelli Indio – The last time hip-hop was awarded Coachella’s closeout slot was in 2012, when Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg set the bar at a peak-of-Mt. Everest level for all future headlining acts. The long-time Los Angeles duo played all of their classics, brought out a bevy of hip-hop superstar guests performers to sing collaborative songs and even dropped millions of dollars on a Tupac Shakur hologram.

In 2015, Coachella’s

promotion c o m p a n y, Goldenvoice, called upon rappersinger Drake to finish this year’s edition with a bang. As the most popular man in Hip-hip, Aubrey “Drake” Graham was a morethan worthy choice to close out the main stage at America’s largest music Festival.

Drake is an exceptional live performer, a Grammy winner, has a deep list of hit songs and strong relationships with other rappers that could have certainly rivaled the wealth of performers – and

the legendary show as a whole – that Dre and Snoop provided in 2012.

Despite receiving his first invitation to ever perform at Coachella, when the lineup was announced, common sense indicated Drake was going to be final artist of the two-weekend party in the desert.

Speculation immediately began about what the Toronto native would do for his lyrical opus on the highest stage of music festivals. What songs

would he perform? How many guest artists will he have? Will 2 Chainz, Nicki Minaj or possibly Lil’ Wayne arrive to surprise the crowd with guest performances?

Around 10 pm on Sunday night, the excited and tired crowd of more than 60, 000 gathered for the main headliner’s scheduled 10:15 appearance at the Coachella Stage – the largest stage at the Empire Polo Club.

Finally beginning at 10:40, Drake was already points behind with his long delay.

“I didn’t come here to talk, I came here to play the hits,” the Canadian rapper exclaimed after dedicating his performance to his mother Sandi. Drake did sing his hits, but failed to perform his most popular Young Money classics that the Coachella faithful had been singing to on the radio since 2007 and even before.

Other than rapping his verse from “Forever,” a song that features Eminem, Lil’ Wayne and Kanye West, Drake did not sing another song where he was a featured artist. That meant no surprises from the aforementioned superstars or any of his fellow YMCMB family – whom almost all of Coachella was expecting to see and hear.

There was one surprise, though, and it was not the unexpectedness of legendary Madonna gracing the stage to

perform Drake’s “Madonna” or her own “Hung Up.” When the 56-year-old singer was just about done with her spotlight, she walked over to Drake and planted an aggressive, 20-second kiss on the rapper – who is half her age.

Following the kiss, Drake said, “I don’t know what the (expletive) just happened,” and neither did the rest of the Coachella massive.

Madonna was the first surprise and sadly the last. That meant no Wayne, no Nicki – he did not even bring out Tyga – who along with Kanye were probably in attendance with their Kardashian wives and girlfriends anyway.

Most of the songs that the Millennials grew up listening to were passed up for the newer Drake. Which would be fine in any other show or tour, but this was not any other show or tour – this was Coachella.

Unfortunately, first weekend attendees were not treated to the type of sky-high, hype-worthy performance that the proud Canadian is capable of giving.

With another opportunity this weekend, hopefully Drake can bring what his first attempt was lacking.

Surf Air Expands Service to Four New California Destinations

Daily Departures Increase to 90 per day to Meet Significant New Member Growth Demand

By Desert Star Staff SANTA MONICA, Calif. – In a development that represents a 40 percent growth of its existing network, Surf Air, the nation’s first All-You-Can-Fly private membership club, has announced that it will begin service to four new California destinations in 2015 including Santa Rosa, Monterey, Sacramento and Palm Springs.

These new destinations provide desirable access to underserved markets that offer tremendous business and leisure opportunities—including state and local government, wine country tourism and seasonal vacation traffic. Along with new membership options and benefits, these are the first of many changes taking place in 2015 for the rapidly growing company, which plans to nearly triple its fleet to meet the increasing demand of an expected 3,000 members.

“To continue to make our travel experience as convenient as it can possibly be, we’re building a network that’s as well connected as our members,” said Jeff Potter, CEO of Surf Air. “We are responding to the desires of our members and prospects to expand our daily service to key new markets

By adding new destinations and frequencies, Surf Air is poised for significant growth in 2015 and plans to acquire five additional new Pilatus PC12 aircraft for 45 new daily departures—double its current capacity—to accommodate the additional members the club expects to add this year.

New destinations include: • Santa Rosa – Charles M. Shultz / Sonoma County Airport (STS) – Starting May 22 to/from LA Metro (Hawthorne) and San Carlos • Monterey – Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) – Starting July 20 to/from LA Metro (Hawthorne) and San Carlos • Sacramento – McClellan Airfield (MCC) in McClellan Park, CA – Starting August 24 to/from LA Metro (Hawthorne), San Carlos and Santa Barbara • Palm Springs – Bermuda Dunes Airport (UDD) – Starting November 5 to/from Burbank and Oakland As Surf Air expands to more of California’s most desirable destinations, the company also wants to enhance the membership value to both

current and prospective members.

As such, the company is introducing a new annual membership option that includes the benefit of at least four complimentary roundtrip guest flights each year.

Members also have the option to purchase round-trip guest flights at a reduced rate for a limited time. Currently, Surf Air membership starts at $1,750 per month for unlimited flights.

Individual, Family, and Corporate memberships are also available.

“We’ve had proven success with business travelers in our existing network. What makes these new routes so ideal is their equal appeal to leisure travelers,” said Sudhin Shahani, Executive Chairman of Surf Air. “Not only will our members have a convenient way to attend meetings and expand their businesses in other key California cities, they’ll also have the freedom to fly spontaneously from LA to Monterey or Sonoma for the weekend. The combination of new routes and expanded guest privileges with our new annual memberships will make our service even more valuable to members.”

The Classic Thriller, “Wait Until Dark”

By Desert Star Staff “Wait Until Dark” had audiences raving as it opened at Theatre 29 in Twentynine palms for a 5 week run April 10th to a sold-out full house.

For Director Ben Bees the drama, while not, “his first rodeo”, as a director, it was his Theatre 29 directorial debut.

Bees said “The details are what killed me. You don’t quite realize until you’re on the other side of the script just how many details need to be addressed to make a show work. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the details so I made sure to surround myself with a production staff and crew that was good at catching all the details.”

The Director has high praise for his Cast and Crew, saying, “Their excitement and desire to be there even when they weren’t required to, built the comradery and ensemble that has made this show such an incredible thing to watch night after night.”

Bees also praised his lead performers, mentioning two in particular, “Lizzie (Elizabeth Schmelling as Susy Hendrix) got so into her blind character that she missed the laundry basket she was supposed to throw a glass vase into and shattered

it across the stage during rehearsal. We were tempted to have the first two rows wear goggles just so we could shatter a vase every night. I’ve known Cyrus (Cyrus Short as the villainous Roat) for a couple of years now and he is a dear friend as well as a respected colleague, yet he still terrifies me with his nuances and his command of his vocal faculties.

In Wait Until dark”, which opened on Broadway in 1966 and was made into a hit film in 1967, sinister con man, Roat, and two ex-convicts have traced the location of a mysterious doll which conceals heroin to the Greenwich Village apartment of Sam Hendrix and his blind wife, Susy. The con man and his ex-convicts, through a cleverly constructed deception, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in a murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights leaving her and her captors to maneuver in the dark.

“Wait Until Dark” will run weekends through May 9th , Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 pm and Sunday Matinees

at 2:30 pm on April 19th and May 3rd.
