From the Editor

T

he beginning of the calendar year is at its heart a fantasy of newness and clean slates—of the chance to do things differently and with more attention to purpose. In reality, it’s also one of the most challenging times of year for many of us, as we return from holidays and fly straight into the plate-glass window of an overfull schedule. As I talk with friends and colleagues about plans, the word “hectic” keeps coming up, and I think we should find that a little worrisome. A hectic fever is what you get when you have consumption. It looks a lot like excitement, but ultimately, you’re consumed.

The beginning of each calendar year at Desert Mountain does bring a little bit of “hectic fever”, as we navigate the Master Association Annual Meeting and election, Village Annual Meetings and the return to a more robust schedule with seasonal visitors and residents here to enjoy the perfect weather. But we ultimately need to take a breath and remember what it is we’re doing and why.

Last year at this time I wrote about the “science of New Year’s resolutions” and how those focusing on one thing at a time have shown to be more successful in reaching whatever goal they set for themselves. Being “consumed” by multiple goals or resolutions works against the brain’s chemistry. This ends up making you busy rather than effective. I’ve read a number of books and articles on the being “busy” versus being “effective”. For example, busy people fill time with tasks rather than prioritizing results. Effective people figure out how to spend less time on getting more done.

Busy people tackle tasks at random without prioritizing by importance or urgency. Effective people work on the most important thing first.

I’m sure we can agree that we would all rather be effective versus busy. Whether you are still working or retired – and wow, some retired folks have the most hectic lives! – our 24/7 culture and ever connected high-speed times have made being busy one of the highest valued currencies in our

social market. But being busy, or just seeming so, is considered an excuse for almost all of life’s demands. It’s considered a justification for not actually getting much done.

So this year, I resolve to not be busy, but instead be effective. Being effective means being deliberate, and in order to be deliberate, we have to pause, take a breath and remember what it is we’re doing and why. The more deliberate we are about how we spend our time and energy, the less likely we will get bogged down in trivial tasks, and the more likely we will build successful, meaningful engaged lives. The lineage of Zen meditators seem to have figured it out a while ago:

The Rear View Mirror... ...tells us where we have been and what we left behind.

Up close; perhaps also a time for reflection.

That said, 2018 “was a very good year” noting your HOA Board and staff are pleased with what was accomplished for our residents and homeowners. Many of these results followed the newly-developing HOA/Club Board relationship where common objectives and opportunities are being explored and addressed. An example would be the overwhelming (76%) membership approval of the HOA short-term rental amendment, clearly a complement to restricting non-resident use of DM Club facilities. And, as Kevin mentioned in his accompanying article, we also have developed several joint branding messages and a new HOA Community web site to be launched early in 2019.

As we begin the new year many carry-over initiatives will be concluded and new challenges will be addressed, including our efforts to promote safer bicycling in the Desert Mountain Community. None of this can be accomplished without the dedication and efforts of the respective Committee chairs and their hard-working members, three of whom are leaving the Board this year as their terms expire.

Kevin has appropriately recognized Bob, Danny and Mike for what they have contributed individually and as valuable members of our HOA Board. They will be missed! In that regard we are fortunate to have received a significant

outpouring of interested candidates with impressive experiences and diverse backgrounds; always desirable attributes for an effective Board. Please read their resumes and listen to their presentations; we need your involvement and support in selecting the best people to represent your interests.

So; in looking back we are also moving forward with a new Board and a renewed commitment in serving the needs and expectations of this wonderful place we call “home”...the Desert Mountain Community.

Executive Director’s Corner

T

he Master Board held their final 2018 meeting on December 3rd and I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a review of some of the highlights from the meeting and 4th quarter of 2018: First off, it was the last business meeting for three outgoing Board Members. We want to thank and acknowledge Bob Engelman, Danny Fullerton and Mike Dings for their dedicated efforts on behalf of the Association and its members. Bob has been Treasurer for the past few years and has been instrumental in keeping the assessments from increasing in 2018 and 2019. This is almost unheard of in our business as costs are always going up. Bob should be commended for his strong fiscal management. Danny has led two committees over the past three years, including Safety & Access and Communications. His efforts on the Communications Committee have resulted in new branding for the Association and, in 2019, a new community website. Lastly, Mike and his Ad Hoc Rental Parameters Committee navigated a very sensitive analysis with respect to the short-term rental vote. All three outgoing members dug their heels in and worked to ensure Desert Mountain remains the premier Association for years to come. Thank you Bob, Danny and Mike for a job well done.

Gate Operators The gate operator project is near completion, with only a few warranty issues to resolve. The yearlong project touched every village on the Mountain and came in at budget and within the anticipated timeline. Kudos to our Operations Department team members Bruce Spilka and Norm Schmitz, as well as Maverick Gates, for completing this large project with so few hiccups.

Branding As mentioned above, the Community, working with the Desert Mountain Club, Inc. updated the community branding in 2018. The final touches will be complete with the new website design and its anticipated launch in early 2019. You will see an updated design, and as part of the project we reviewed community values, tonality, logos, colors, typography and photography. This is part of a continued effort between the Club and the Community to work symbiotically. One of the more important features of our new branding initiative was to create a new Desert Mountain Community logo. While our official legal name remains Desert Mountain Master Association, you will see us referred to as “Desert Mountain Community� moving forward.

Community Survey The community wide survey was launched on November 27th and almost 700 residents took the opportunity to respond within the first week. We anticipate the final numbers will be higher as we are producing this newsletter while the survey is still active. Our goal is to provide an update at our Annual Meeting in January and in the next edition of the Connection.

Bicycle Safety in Desert Mountain The Master Board continues its research and analysis with respect to safer cycling in Desert Mountain. A renowned expert in the field of cycling and road safety has been engaged and has performed onsite testing within the community. Michael Kuzel, Principal for 4M Safety, is a human factors and safety engineering consultant and faculty associate at ASU. Mr. Kuzel is an expert with regards to human factors, environmental evaluations and safety engineering related to cycling. He has committed to holding a town hall meeting in order to listen to the comments and concerns from the residents before providing a recommendation. Be on the lookout for an announcement and date for the town hall soon.

Short-term Rental Amendment You should have received a few detailed communication pieces recently with respect to the short-term rental amendment. A community wide email, website posting and statement mailer insert all addressed the new rule with respect to short-term rentals. Please visit our website at desertmthoa.com for all the information, forms and listings of available short-term rental properties available in Desert Mountain.

Desert Mountain Announces New Innovative Technology for Hiking Enthusiasts

A

t Desert Mountain Club, home to a 15-mile private trail system, members have a leg up when planning their hikes, thanks to new technology and a very dedicated group of members who are outdoor enthusiasts.

Members and their guests are taking more than 12,000 hikes each year on our trails, consisting of seven trail segments. The Desperados, members of the Desert Mountain community who raised the money to build the trails, just announced the installation of an innovative Interactive Trail Guide that is taking the hiking experience at to the next level.

The Interactive Trail Guide is a rugged and weatherproof 55” touch screen monitor that is mounted at the trailhead. Hikers are able to select their choice based on distance, degree of difficulty, or even based on which hike provides for the best views of the sunset. Once the hike is selected, a customized map is created and can be scanned from a code right off the screen and onto the hiker’s mobile device. Twenty of the most common routes and accompanying GPS data are pre-loaded into the system to assist in selecting each person’s ideal hike.

“When designing the guide, I felt like a kid in a candy shop because the technology, the richness of our trail data, and the demands of our users, allowed us to be first to broadly offer such a tool,” said Desperados member, Craig Mitchell.

The Interactive Trail Guide also has the capability to check current weather, view an informative species guide, scan interesting facts, and recommend specific hikes. Photos submitted by members from recent trailhead events will also be on display as well as information about the Desperados.

“This new Interactive Trail Guide is remarkable in that it democratizes the trail system with the touch of a finger on the digital flat screen,” said Desperados member, Troy Gillenwater. “Today’s hiker, without ever having stepped a foot on our trails, is able to sort and choose the ideal hike based on either distance, time, or elevation gain by using our digital guide.”

Treasurer's Report

A

s we approach the end of 2018, I would like to report on the financial status of the Desert Mountain Master Association. Through the first ten months of the year, the Association’s revenue has exceeded expenses by more than $200,000 - significantly better than we had budged some 14 months ago. As we have been reporting all year, net design review and construction related income make up the bulk of this number. The other large revenue variance is the collection of over $80,000 in traffic fines. While unanticipated fine revenue of this magnitude might be welcome in a forprofit corporation, it is not revenue your Board of Directors either plans on (the budget for this line item is zero) or desires. While such collections have been or will be spent on un-budgeted safety enhancing measure for our community, the ultimate goal is enhanced safety and security on our roads. Please slow down!

Expenses are slightly over plan for the year primarily due to expenses associated with four items - design review activity, last spring’s vote on the new short term rental policy, additional culvert cleaning costs as a result of the this fall’s storms, and income taxes related to higher than plan earnings on the Association’s long term reserves. During the first ten months of 2018, we also contributed $817,500 to long-term reserves, almost $70,000 more than plan.

We expect to end the year with a positive operating variance of at least $150,000 and to have contributed in excess of $1,000,000 to longterm reserves. This will bring our 2019 starting reserve balance to approximately $5,250,000…a very healthy sum. At the same time as your Master Association is reporting numbers like this, I am pleased to report the 19 unincorporated villages - whose financial management is overseen by the Master’s staff - are materially on budget, and almost half will have no increase, and in some cases a decrease, in their annual assessments in 2019. Likewise, for the second year in a row, there will be no increase in annual assessments for

I will be leaving the Board after six years at the January 2019 Annual Meeting accordingly, this will be my last letter as your treasurer. It was a pleasure to serve with so many fellow community members who volunteered their time as both Directors and committee members during that span. However, most of all, it was a pleasure to work with Kevin, Jake, Bruce, Bill, Dana and the entire staff of our Association. Their dedication and professionalism are exemplary. We can be proud to have this team working for us. To you all…Thank you!

Transport carriers will be permitted to drop off within the perimeter gates in order to prevent collisions from occurring on Cave Creek Road.

Safety & Access Update

Trail Safety

H

iking in Arizona is amazing and can offer you some of the most beautiful sites you will ever see. The Trails at Desert Mountain are no exception. During the winter months, we will still experience temperature swings at “The Trails.” The sun sets earlier and with that, temperatures will drop quickly at the higher elevations. We encourage our hikers to keep these safety tips in mind.

• Check the local weather forecast before you leave home. It is possible for weather changes to approach the Community from the north. In these instances you will not know a storm is approaching until it appears over the crest of the mountain. This may be too late from being caught in a weather change.

• Communicate – It is recommended that you never hike alone. However, if you are hiking alone be sure someone knows where you are going and anticipated time you will be returning.

• Take communications with you. Do not leave your cell phone at the trailhead in your vehicle.

Though cell service can be spotty in places on the trails, you are able to get service in most areas.

• Wildlife - Give wildlife a wide berth. Our trail system is adjacent to the National Forest and wildlife that lives there visits us here.

• Pets must be on leash, our trails are within the City of Scottsdale and leash laws apply. Also, be attentive to your pet. If they do not normally walk on rocks or for long distances, they may give out before you do. Are you prepared to carry your pet back to the trailhead?

• If you return to your vehicle and decide to leave with a friend in his/her vehicle, leave a note on your dash when you will return and that you have left the trails. When vehicles are observed in the parking lot—especially after dark—we presume you are still walking the trails or may have been injured and need assistance.

• Know where you are, each of the trails have Emergency/Rescue Marker posts with a number on them. They are approximately 1/10 mile apart and the numbers do not repeat on any of the trails. These markers have been GPS identified and are in the City of Scottsdale Fire Department GPS Marking system.

• Emergency Response - Should you need assistance, our security team will respond to the Trail Head and stage at that location. They will not respond on any of the trails. We will communicate any known information to Scottsdale Fire Department when they arrive on scene. The Fire

Department will not respond on the trail system until they have enough assets and resources Bill Fultz to affect a rescue. This can take valuable time.

Recently we have had two incidents with hikers Director of Security getting lost on the system requiring Fire Department response and rescue. If you have any concerns, please call our office to discuss.

Be safe and enjoy the spectacular views from our trail system.

This fall our security team attended continuing education courses.

Two of those courses were presented by outside agencies. The City of Scottsdale Crisis Intervention Unit, taught “Dealing with Traumatic Events.” This course educated our team on interaction with persons they encounter with during a traumatic event and how to recognize their needs in the aftermath of such an event.

The second course was “Superior Service” presented by Desert Mountain Club, Inc. This facilitated the understanding of customer service from “The Club” perspective and identified ways we can improve our service to the community.

We would like to remind everyone to drive safely on Desert Mountain streets in order to prevent unnecessary incidents.

Business Update

Master Association Finance

T

he Desert Mountain Master Association continues to perform well through October 2018. The Master Association ended October with excess revenue over expenses of more than $200,000. Total Revenue is over budget by $397,000 due to better than budgeted Assessments, Design Review, less than budgeted Bad Debt, Misc. Income and Traffic Violations. All other income lines are materially on budget. Additionally, total Operating Expenses are $153,000 over budget, primarily due to the short-term rental CC&R amendment legal and meeting costs and Professional Fees related to Design Review activity. Material areas of the budget such as Administration, Landscape Maintenance and Guard Service are all under budget and performing well. Scheduled Culvert Cleaning was complete in April. Due to rainfall in July - September, there will be an additional $40,000 or so expensed in Culvert Cleaning by year-end.

Lastly, through October, $818,000 has been transferred to reserves on a budget of $750,000. The Desert Mountain Master Association continues to be financially sound due to outstanding expense oversight by your DMMA Board of Directors and CCMC Staff along with steady Design Review activity.

Village News - Fall Update

I

n the blink of an eye, 2018 has passed. It was a largely active and productive year for Village projects.

Every Village – Gate Operators

As Bruce Spilka has written about in the past few issues of this magazine, every Village entrance received new gate operators as budgeted and reserved for in their reserve accounts. This project is now complete.

Our partner, Maverick Gates, was great to work with and the project went relatively smoothly. The total cost of this project was approximately $650,000. With so many Village entrances across the Mountain, it was a very time consuming project for your HOA staff this year.

2018 Roadwork All 2018 roadwork is complete. Only the Villages of Rose Quartz, Mountain Skyline, Saguaro Forest, Gambel Quail, Gambel Quail Preserve, Sunrise and Eagle Feather had roadwork completed. While this is not a lot of Villages, they are some of the larger Villages we have on the Mountain. The cost of this roadwork totaled over $500,000 and was funded by the Village reserve accounts.

Lookout Ridge Unit Painting Every unit and common area wall is due for painting in 2019. The paint will be Dunn Edwards 100% exterior acrylic paint, Mesa Tan. Additionally, the rear patio metal railings and gates will be spot primed at rust areas and painted with Dunn Edwards Aristoshield Gloss Black.

This project will be completed in the first half of 2019.

Apache Peak Paver Installation Apache Peak will be upgrading their mailbox parking area to replace the existing asphalt with pavers and concrete curbing.

Desert Broom Removal So far, nine Villages are proactively removing Desert Broom from their common areas. The level of Desert Broom and work involved varies greatly across each Village. Arrowhead, Apache Peak, Cochise Ridge, Deer Run, Painted Sky, Renegade Trail, Lone Mountain II, Lookout Jacob Marshall, Ridge and Lost Star have proceeded.

PCAM, CMCA®, CAAM® This involves a one-time removal Community Manager and an annual maintenance program that removes newly grown Desert Broom plants each year. The plant is not eradicated, but it can be kept to a minimum each year. The HOA highly encourages all owners to survey their own private property and remove Desert Broom as well. It is deemed an invasive species by the City of Scottsdale and highly flammable. Please contact Bruce Spilka at the HOA office if you have specific questions related to your private property and Desert Broom.

Village Grass Areas & Use Please remember that grass areas within Villages are for those residents’ use only. Those Villages that have a grass area pay for those areas from their Village assessments. Residents should not bring their dogs to these areas for playtime. The Club has a beautiful dog park for your furry friends near the Cochise-Geronimo clubhouse.

Handyman and Home Caretaking Services

W

ith 2019 around the corner, the Owner Services Business (OSB) will be entering its eighth full year in business. For those of you who do not know, the Owner Services Business is available to all Desert Mountain Community members; even to renters with the approval provided from the owner. Since the OSB is located at the Fairways office and operated through the homeowners association, it is both convenient and reliable. OSB strives to take the burden off the homeowner when it comes to small repairs and maintenance of their home.

The Owner Services Business provides two services to the community—light handyman work and home caretaking. The term “light handyman” has an array of meanings for our residents which include, but are not limited to: replacing light bulbs and smoke alarm batteries, small stucco and painting jobs, minor plumbing and electrical work, and putting out and bringing in trash cans and recycle bins before and after pickup. We have even met vendors and delivery services at homes if the resident could not be present. Regardless of the service(s) you need, the cost is just $60/hour. Desert Mountain’s Handyman, Rick Fields, has serviced over 500 residents to date. Through October 2018, Handyman income is steady, down just 2% when compared to the same period in 2017, with nearly no customer service issues. Talk about great service!

The Owner Services Business also provides home caretaking. Scott McVay, Desert Mountain’s Home Caretaker, can take care of your home both while you are away and while you are here. Home Caretaking services consist of a detailed checklist for each visit with a report sent to the homeowner within 24 hours of each visit. Scott will also contact any vendors provided by the homeowner if he notices any issues; for example, dirty pools, landscaping issues, etc. He will then schedule them to come out and fix the problem after notifying the homeowner.

Through October 2018, Home Caretaking checks are up 43% when compared to the same period in 2017. That data is rewarding to see and indicative of the outstanding service Scott provides for his clients!

Operations

A

s 2018 winds down, my staff is completing the year’s scheduled projects, and they are working on planning 2019 projects.

2018 Swing Gate Operator Replacement Project will be completed by year’s end—a month later than the anticipated timeframe and within budget. Along the way we encountered weather delays, a few equipment warranty issues and some unexpected excavations with conduit replacement. In 2019 the gate vendor will perform quarterly inspections at each of the installations as part of the contract to ensure the equipment is optimally functioning as designed.

The Desert Mountain Area Drainage Master Study is nearing completion and a Public Meeting is scheduled for February 26th at Cochise Geronimo Sunset Terrace from 3:00 – 5:00 pm. Maricopa County Flood District and the City of Scottsdale will present the results of the study to include large maps and the website link with the results. Information will include a flood hazard map identifying the risk level—low, medium and high for homes, roads, pedestrians, erosion and sediment levels.

Requests For Proposals were solicited from engineering firms to inspect our road conditions and update the assumptions for a 30-year Pavement Analysis to be used for a Reserve Study update. Approximately every 5 years the existing Reserve Study for each of the Villages and the Master Associations is updated that will be completed in 2019 for 2020 – 2050. For most of the Village and Master Associations, future road maintenance compromises about 90% of the Reserve Study.

Getting it right to the best of our ability is essential.

Our Landscape Service Provider, DLC Resources, is tasked with an annual inspection of our 700+ common area culverts that is currently

in process. Photos are taken of each culvert and the sediment levels documented. When the sediment levels of either the inlet or outlet is greater than 50%, then the locations are Bruce Spilka placed on priority maintenance to be Director of Operations cleaned in 2020. From January 1 – November 15, the five HOA maintained rain gauges recorded rainfall amounts ranging from 11.13” at Rose Quartz to 15.05” at Saguaro Forest Cintarosa Ranch.

The Villages of Apache Cottages, Haciendas, Lookout Ridge, Sonoran Cottages/Enclave and Sonoran Ridge include exterior stucco painting provided in the Supplemental Declaration of the Village Association as part of the common area expenses. Typically exterior stucco painting is scheduled every 8 years and wood surfaces every four years. Homeowners have the option to repaint exterior surfaces and or re-stain wood surfaces for their homes using the approved color(s) at their expense if desired beyond the scheduled painting. A FEW REMINDERS: Trash Containers – The City of Scottsdale provides pick up of black trash containers on Tuesdays and mauve recycle containers on Thursdays.

Antennas – Antennas are to be placed in an area that is least visible from other homes, lots and common areas.

Domestic Pets – The City of Scottsdale Ordinances and the

Desert Mountain guidelines require all domestic pets to be on a leash in common areas.

Signage – Our sign guideline conforms to the City of Scottsdale Alarm System Ordinance. Security signage as described in the Alarm System Ordinance is permitted if it is screened from view of adjacent lots, common areas and other open spaces.

Landscape – Boulders, mineral ground covers, and similar features will be limited either to materials indigenous to Desert Mountain or to materials similar in color and appearance to indigenous material. Note: The maintenance of an area around a home that is clear of vegetation is not allowed.

Candidates announced for Desert Mountain Master Board Six candidates are running for three open seats on the Desert Mountain Master Board.

You should have received your ballots in the mail. This year at the Desert Mountain Master Association’s Annual Meeting on January 21, 2019, you have the opportunity once again to elect new members to the Board of Director to represent your interests. Your Board members are elected for three-year terms with a two-term limit, ensuring that there are always new Board members with fresh perspectives joining the HOA Governance Process at the Board level. This year there will be three open seats on the Board.

Candidate Biographies

Franklin D. Brown Mr. Brown has over 40 years of experience in the healthcare field.

He has served on over 20 boards of directors of both private and public companies in the medical device/ biotech/diagnostic areas. He has been Chairman and CEO of three medical device companies. He took two of them public. In 1991 he was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year and in 2000 Director of the Year, Governance. He served as a Captain in the US Army from 1968-1972. He received his MBA from the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business in 1967.

While living at Desert Mountain for the past 15 years, he has been involved in the community. He has been very active in CARE, chairing committees, serving on the board, and raising money. He served two years on the Golf Club finance committee (2016-2018). He is currently on the Board of the GQ-SR-EF village board where he has served the last 10 years.

Mr. Brown was a founding investor in Endologix in 1997 and became President and CEO in 1998. He added the Chairmanship the next year.

Mr. Brown led the company through its early years, gained CE mark approval and US approval and several rounds of financing. He took the company public in 2002 through a reverse merger. When Mr. Brown retired as Chairman in 2012, Endologix (ELGX) had sales approaching $100 million and a market cap of almost $1 billion.

Prior to Endologix, he was Chairman and CEO of Imagyn Medical.

He joined the company in 1994, did a recapitalization of the company, fixed FDA issues, took the company public in 1996 and sold it 1997.

Mr. Brown was also CEO and President of Deltec Systems, which became Pharmacia Deltec from 1986-1994 when the company was sold to Smith Industries. The company had only 10 employees when it started, and he grew the company to over $150 million in sales, it was profitable, and the world leaders in ambulatory infusion care.

Prior to 1986 Mr. Brown was President of the Pharmacia Healthcare Group in the US, and held various positions in several other healthcare companies from 1972 to 1982.

Bill Eckholm I live year round at 11142 E. Tamarisk Way in the Village of Apache Peak. My wife and I bought our first lot in Apache Peak in 1998. In 2014 we purchased another lot on which we have built our principle residence.

For over 44 years I worked in the special hazard, fire suppression business. I have been the President and CEO of some of several of the largest global manufacturing companies in that field. In that role, I have learned what it takes to build teamwork, to listen to people of different opinions and to help build a consensus with all.

Working with volunteers can be different from a leadership position, such as a company President. I fully appreciate this as I also serve on the Board of Directors of a number of national charities. There it is even more critical to listen to everyone’s opinion and to work to reach a common goal.

I strongly believe that Desert Mountain is a great place to call home.

I believe in the Club’s vision that: “Our mission is to make Dessert Mountain one of the finest, private, residential and lifestyle communities in the world by providing superior service and outstanding amenities in an atmosphere of excellence.” This vision is one that I believe we should all be working to foster and build upon!

To participate in accomplishing that vision, I have served as the representative of the Village of Apache Peak to the President’s Council. During that same time I have attended most all Desert Mountain Master Association meetings to learn how the Master Association works and to offer my input, when allowed, on the matters at hand. When the Short Term Rental issue was being addressed, I served as a member of the Master Association’s Ad Hoc Committee which made recommendations to the Board on the matter.

In the 1990’s, I lived in Blue Springs, MO where I was the first President of The Parks, a large residential community, Home Owners Association.

I look forward to continuing to work toward making Desert Mountain something truly special!

Kevin Frawley My name is Kevin Frawley. My wife Joan and I live in the Village of Saguaro Forest. We became members of Desert Mountain when we purchased a lot in September 2005.

For the next 10 years, we visited often, then relocated to the area in 2015 as we began building a new home which we moved into in January, 2017. We are now full time residents and members and are committed to this community for many years to come.

My career spanned over 40 years in law and business. I spent 15 years in public service as a prosecutor and in senior roles in New York City government. Included were positions as Commissioner of Investigation and later as a member of the city’s Conflicts of Interest Board.

In over 25 years in the private sector, I first practiced corporate law with a major securities firm and was the first Chief Compliance Officer for a large insurance carrier. That role gave me the opportunity to work closely with senior management to rebuild an effective, compliant business following two serious regulatory crises.

My last full time position was as the CEO for the Americas for a global claims management company where I was responsible for operations in 10 countries. During that 10-year period, I had extensive experience in strategic planning, meeting demanding budget targets and working effectively with a wide range of corporate clients.

Finally, I was the president of the boards of two large cooperative apartment buildings on Manhattan’s west side for many years. These roles provided very direct and relevant experience managing the many complex and challenging issues of large residential buildings. We faced constant challenges in developing practical solutions for all residents while addressing the specific needs and concerns of individuals.

I believe my experience has prepared me to serve effectively on the DMMA. I am committed to maintaining the beautiful community we share and working to find ways to improve the quality of life for all members and homeowners.

I appreciate the opportunity to serve.

Alton Jones Tami and I purchased our first home at Desert Mountain in 1997.

We fell in love with the Sonoran Desert and made plans to retire to this peaceful and beautiful environment. To accommodate our interests, we built our second home in Saguaro Forest in 2007. Full retirement and leaving New Jersey prompted us to purchase and renovate our third and current home four years ago in Saguaro Forest. Enjoying our friends, the environment and an active life style make Desert Mountain an ideal location for us.

I spent 4 decades in the financial services industry, retiring as Chairman of Pershing, Division of Bank of New York/Mellon.

Spending 38 years with one firm provided me an opportunity to take on numerous and diverse opportunities and challenges from strategic and business planning, branding and meeting customer expectations to acting as a general contractor in the construction of over a million square feet of office space including roads, planning utilities and redundant power sources. However, nothing was more gratifying than working with my partners to build a world-class company and thus, providing value to all stakeholders.

I served on numerous for profit and non-profit Boards that required a collaborative, thoughtful and objective approach to the priorities of the organization and the expectations of its stakeholders. Those experiences and learning opportunities are valuable attributes I would bring to serving our community and working with other HOA Board members to achieve the priorities of Desert Mountain residents.

Undergraduate work was done at Long Island University, graduate work at Columbia and postgraduate work at Harvard and Wharton.

Much of my formal academic training was done in the behavioral sciences and finance.

Desert Mountain is home for us. Its beauty and serenity are appreciated every day and enrich our lives. That passion motivates me to want to serve and contribute to the community. Maintaining and enhancing a safe, secure and peaceful environment is paramount for all community residents.

Barbara K. Marsh-Wetherell Barbara Marsh-Wetherell, better known as “BMW,”moved to her new full-time home in Mountain Skyline in September 2017. She was searching for a quieter and more tranquil setting to continue her career compared to her decades of work and living in the frantic and hectic San Francisco Bay Area. Desert Mountain is the perfect location choice – the beauty and peace of the Sonora Desert offers serenity and calmness as well as a great place to explore and experience the out of doors to her.

BMW is a Silicon Valley high technology industry veteran with over 30 years of hands-on experience in the sales and marketing of software, hardware and supply chain / logistics services. She founded MarshWetherell Market Relations in September 1989. The company is known for its highly effective, innovative, “guerrilla” strategic marketing and public relations programs and has had a hand in the success of many organizations worldwide.

A native of California, BMW is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in political science and a minor in journalism. She has sat on a number of non-profit boards over the last twenty years, focused on care of abandon, abused and damage children and animals as well as supporting the arts, such as the Contra Costa Children’s Chorus and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society - San Francisco Branch with pro bono marketing communication and media relations programs.

BMW has intimate knowledge of and experience in all facets of running a business including financial planning / budgeting, staff hiring / management and client / vendor negotiations, etc. Her role while on the non-profit boards included budget creation and review, tracking expenditures, return on investment analysis, and governance and adherence to state / federal government non-profit rules and regulations as well as strategic marketing and communication programs.

Cathy Ostermeyer My husband Dave and I have been DM homeowners and Club members since 1999 and have lived here full time since 2004.

Prior to moving to DM, I served on the combined HOA and Club Board at our home in Kansas City and worked with the County government to incorporate that small community into an independent village when it was threatened to be annexed into a large city (The Village of Loch Lloyd, Missouri). That experience provided me a good understanding of the necessity of our DMMA Board working closely with the DMC Board.

My business experience was primarily in client service as well as sales and marketing of specialty financial services, which required interacting with high-level executives related to the mutual fund industry. I worked for a large financial services firm where I was responsible for the sales and marketing of our mutual fund services.

I have attended a number of the DMMA Board meetings in order to understand the issues that the current Board is managing and absorbed knowledge as to how the current Board governs. I have been on the DMMA Election Committee for two years, the Covenants Committee this past year and have shadowed the Design Review Committee in order to gain better understanding how that Committee functions.

I also served on the Ad Hoc Committee pertaining to the short-term rental issue.

I would serve on any committee and believe my business background and prior board experience would be beneficial to managing DMMA. I have good writing, presentation and oral communication skills, and I work well with other people.

I am interested in giving back to the community and I am willing to put in the necessary time and effort in order to be an effective member of the DMMA Board.

Desert Mountain Community Foundation

UN was the theme of The Home & Lifestyle Party benefitting the DM/DMMA Employee Scholarship Fund held on November 2. 200+ members attended and 32 vendors paid between $1,500 and $10,000 to sponsor scholarships. At this writing, the DMCF will net $60,000!

Seven of this year’s scholars greeted attendees and personally thanked the vendors for their contributions.

Each attendee is given a “Report Card” and visits each of the vendors to learn about services and receive a signature. The report cards are turned in and one is drawn for a grand prize. The winner was Maureen Brennan who received a Private Dinner prepared by a Desert Mountain chef in her home and a mixed case of wine. Congratulations, Maureen!

New this year was the addition of member Robert Seaton on guitar, a real treat for attendees.

he Flood Control District of Maricopa County (FCDMC), in partnership with the City of Scottsdale and Town of Carefree, is conducting an Area Drainage Master Study (ADMS) for the communities of Desert Mountain, Carefree Ranch, Carefree Ranch Homesteads, Carefree Shadows, Tonto Hills, and Quail Ridge.

The Team has been working to prepare a computer model that will identify and evaluate existing flood hazards and risks, and will present the results at a public meeting on February 26, 2019 at Sunset Terrace at the Cochise/Geronimo Clubhouse, 10333 E. Rockaway Hills Drive, Scottsdale AZ 85262.

An additional public meeting is being scheduled for the project in February and will be held outside the Desert Mountain community and within the overall study area. After the public meetings, results will also be available on the project website at fcd.maricopa.gov/dmadms.

CARE STARS Beacons of Hope in the Fight Against Cancer.

A history to be proud of…

I

t has been twenty years since Desert Mountain Members’ CARE tournament kicked off as a grassroots cancer fund raising effort by some exceptional caring and compassionate Desert Mountain members. In those twenty years, cancer research, detection, and treatment have advanced in leaps and bounds. Desert Mountain Members’ CARE contributors should be very proud that our community has played a meaningful role in funding these medical advancements.

As CARE has grown and matured, Desert Mountain Members have become significant contributors to the research efforts of HonorHealth and Mayo Clinic of Arizona. Over $6.9 million that CARE has donated to date. Your generosity has been amazing and the progress to intercept cancer made possible by your donations, is fantastic.

One of the programs funds raised supports is the HonorHealth Cellular Therapy Research Program. This program focuses on novel treatments that involve transplanting human cells to replace or repair damaged cells…similar to now-common cell therapies such as blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants. At Mayo Clinic of AZ, CARE is helping to fund the INTERCEPT Program. INTERCEPT testing will determine whether a patient has a sporadic or inherited form of cancer, a critical distinction which determines the appropriate cancer

treatment for each patient.

It is you especially, our generous CARE STAR donors, that make it possible for CARE to provide seed funding for these innovative cancer research projects. CARE will continue to donate net profits directly to HonorHealth and Mayo Clinic of Arizona Cancer Research.

How to Attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds to Your Yard By: Tony Amezcua, DLC Field Manager

B

utterflies and hummingbirds bring a sense of beauty and wonder to your landscape. Watching them fly and feed from your flowers can be a major highlight of spring and early summer.

Now is a great time to start planning and preparing your yard to attract these creatures through the winter and early spring.

There are many types of butterflies that you might encounter in your yard. The Monarch Butterfly, which has bright orange and black wings, migrates from Canada and the United States down to Mexico. You might also find Snout Butterflies, which have huge population surges in the summer and fall as well as variations of Swallowtails that are usually encountered from March through October.

In order to create an environment suitable for butterflies, your garden should be sunny and protected from the wind. Butterflies tend to be most active on sunny, calm days when temperatures range from 65 to 95 degrees. Planting trees or shrubs provides the needed protection from the wind while butterflies are feeding. Butterflies also need to warm their bodies in order to fly. Placing some rocks around the garden provides added areas for the butterflies to heat themselves before flight.

Butterflies not only feed on nectar, but also need water provided by streams and morning dew. Create depressions in your garden where water can pool providing a water supply between irrigation cycles.

Adult butterflies feed on the nectar of certain flowers, while caterpillars feed on specific plants. Therefore, it is important to have an adequate mix of plants that will support larvae and other plants available for adults. For instance, nectar plants include the Desert Willow. Caterpillars like to eat sage varieties. Plants like the Desert Milkweed and Pink Fairy Duster are good options for both caterpillars and butterflies.

Hummingbirds are among the smallest birds in the world and there are over 330 different species. Some of the hummingbirds we see in Arizona may come from Alaska or Canada and then migrate to Mexico and Central America.

Their beaks have evolved to be ideal tools for extracting nectar, which they obtain from many different flowering plants. They find flowers by sight rather than smell, so the brighter the flower, the better. Try to find native desert plants that have red, orange, or dark pink flowers for the best results. Some plants we recommend are Lantana, as permitted in patio areas, and Yucca.

You can also use hummingbird feeders. If you choose to make your own hummingbird feeder, be sure not to use honey, sugar substitutes, brown sugar or red dye, as these are all unnatural and unhealthy for hummingbirds to consume.

Hummingbirds are unlike butterflies in that they prefer to feed in shaded areas. Put your flowers and hummingbird feeders under shady trees so that the hummingbirds have a protected place to rest and search for insects to eat.

Before planting hummingbird and butterfly-friendly plants, make sure to check with your community’s residential design guidelines to see if those plants are permitted.

With a few accommodations, hummingbirds and butterflies are easy to attract to your landscape. Once they arrive, you can enjoy observing them from the comfort of your own yard.
