This brochure describes our exciting plans to develop additional amenities and programs to enhance our club and community outdoor lifestyle.

And its not just about planning. It’s also about delivering on our promises.

Early this year we raised funds to deploy several projects that resonated with the community: the Ranch Mosaic, the new Cintarosa Trail and a new, cutting edge Interactive Trail Guide that allows any hiker to select their ideal hike. These projects and others are underway. We describe their progress in the following pages.

Our goal as Desperados is to help fulfill the mission of making Desert Mountain one of the finest golf, recreation, and real estate communities in America. Our focus is to grow and deliver our outdoor recreation assets and memorable experiences to our club and community.

P R OJ ECTS CO MPL E T E AN D U N D E RWAY QR T HE RAN C H M OSAI C Our Favorite Community Art Project!

The Ranch Mosaic is a stunning 50’ x 8’ glass and ceramic tile mosaic that will serve as Desert Mountain’s monument to its unique Sonoran Desert location. Regional artist Karen Knorowski, designed the stylized representation of sunrise-to-midnight in the Sonoran Desert.

Local artist Tammi Lynch-Forrest, is contracting the project. She has visited and assessed the site, fine-tuned the design, and ordered materials. Expect to see her this upcoming season as she sketches the mosaic design and begins the installation process. We hope all of you who donated and are interested in our community art project will visit the site and follow Tammi’s progress. Look for various upcoming events to showcase the development and dedication of this incredible one-of-a-kind work of art.

INT E RACTIVE TRAIL GU I DE A ND BULLETIN BOARD Plan Your Hike in Real-Time Choosing the hike you, your family, or guests want to take can be challenging; there are currently more that 20 available route combinations on our trails system. We designed and installed a large ruggedized outdoor touchscreen monitor at the trailhead that allows hikers of all skill levels and ambition to customize their own hike with a few taps on the screen.

The system will produce your own highlighted map for your chosen hike.

Only have an hour? Touch “sort by time� and pick a hike that meets your schedule. Sort and choose by hiking distance or elevation gain as well. Pick up your map via wifi right on your phone so you have your map with you.

The interactive trail guide system is mounted in a new bulletin board kiosk on the North (shady!) side of the Ranch restrooms. There is also a new white board where you can leave messages for friends, or report something you saw on the trails. The same map system will also be on the member website.

DES E RT MOUNTAIN BASE CAMP MAP Desert Mountain is at the Heart of a Recreational Wonderland Most existing maps show Desert Mountain on the outskirts of population centers, and do not display the most interesting outdoor recreation opportunities. This new map rightly places us in the center of the recreational action, highlighting top attractions and adventures close by and within a few hours drive. This is an extremely useful tool for our club and community members, as well as a terrific new marketing piece showing prospective members and home buyers how we are ideally situated near some of the best outdoor recreation in America. The maps will be available at Sonoran Clubhouse and various Club locations sometime during the winter season.

NEWLY COM P LETED A ND EN HANC ED TRAI L S Our Award-Winning Trails System is Expanding SONORAN FITNESS TRAIL: Conveniently

located at the Sonoran fitness center, this newly-signed and improved trail departs from the Sonoran Club and provides a two-mile round trip hike or jog. It was completed Spring 2018.

CINTAROSA TRAIL: This

newly completed two-mile segment connects to the existing Apache Skyline Trail to create a new 3 mile loop that is quickly accessible from our trailhead. Photo below is a first look.

UP COMIN G PROJ ECT S QR N EW TRAILS The Trails are Branching to New Destinations APACHE CITADEL TRAIL: A proposed new trail that will depart from the Apache Skyline Trail and provide high elevation, breathtaking views East and Southeast. Two mile estimated length.

SKULL MESA SHADOWS TRAIL: A proposed new trail that will depart from the China Wall Trail and provide access into Desert Mountain’s wild and remote Northwest, beneath Skull Mesa’s looming “eyes”. Two miles estimated length.

CARTWRIGHT LOOP: Two historical paths currently link Desert Mountain to the upgraded Maricopa Trail. Hiking access to the Maricopa Trail will provide our serious hikers a portal into 3 million acres of pristine lands, making Desert Mountain a singular, world-class outdoor recreation community.

TRAILS DESTINATION ENHANCEMENTS: This improvement package creates alluring destinations on our trails. Projects include a Butte Peak summit windbreak, a Grapevine Wash family picnic area nestled among historic corrals, the restoration of historic fresh water springs for wildlife conservation, and interpretive material for historic gold mining sites and equipment.

M OSAIC VIEWING E NV IR O NM ENT & EN HANCEMEN T S Maximizing the Viewing Experience • Viewing Platform: A proposed multipurpose platform near the existing Kiva will provide a gathering place to view the mosaic, in addition to providing a stage option for Kiva live performances and events.

• Landscaping and Approach Area: Adding cacti and desert vegetation near the mosaic will transform it into a three dimensional dynamic art form comprised of human handiwork and nature’s own art. Subtle ground lighting will enhance the nocturnal view by creating color contrasts and attractive illustration.

• Honoring Donors: Banditos donate $5,000 or more to help Desert Mountain realize its outdoor recreation potential. Artist Tammi Lynch-Forrest will create artistic panels on the mosaic wall, honoring Bandito-level donors.

THE RANCH MASTER PLAN Elevating The Ranch to the Next Level A general Master Plan for major improvements to the Ranch has been developed by a working committee of the Club and Tate Studios Architects.

This initial planning document is under review and discussion by the Club, and the suggested improvements are being considered. Some of these improvements may qualify as tax deductible donations.

D ESP ERAD O S & D O N AT IN G QR THE D ESP ERAD OS The Desperados are a volunteer organization of Desert Mountain Club and Community Members whose first mission is to have fun enjoying outdoor recreation adventures and activities with their like-minded friends. Numbering well over 150 members and growing, we help organize outdoor activities, promote and develop related amenities, and raise funds to realize our full outdoor recreation potential.

Our philanthropic organization is formally known as the Desperados Trail Scouts Fund, a part of the Desert Mountain Community Foundation.

We support other Arizona foundations engaged in nature conservancy, wildlife preservation, and environmental causes.

The Desperados are part of a broader ecosystem of partners and participants that include the Desert Mountain Club, Russ Lyon|Sotheby’s International Realty, Desert Mountain Community Foundation, and The Desert Mountain Community, all contributing to healthy outdoor recreation in our community.
