From the Editor

“Spring” into Adventure…

W

e are all aware the main draw for many moving to Desert Mountain is golf related, but the outdoor amenities, particularly the hiking trails, have brought us a more diverse and adventurous home owner. The nature lover in many who have been here for years has been discovered. Ask any local real estate professional and they will tell you outdoor activities and adventure are key reasons more people are venturing to our Community.

I would classify myself as “adventurous”…maybe not as much as I was in my twenties and thirties but I still enjoy hiking, mountain biking and generally being outside and away from the crowds. And, our unique desert environment provides us the perfect playground.

There is a great quote in the Robert Edison Fulton, Jr. novel One Man Caravan, which chronicles the author’s solo around the world motorcycle trip in the early 1930s. He writes “the desert tells a different story every

time one ventures on it.” I find this to be so true, particularly in the Sonoran Desert. It changes with the seasons much more so than many people might think. We’ve been blessed with some winter rain…and maybe not so blessed with over a foot of snow, but the anticipated wild flower show in March and April should bring quite a change to our hiking trails.

By combining the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert with physical fitness, hiking can turn into a fun and adventurous activity. Enough stock of water and enthusiasm to keep going is all you need to accomplish this beneficial feat. There are several miles of trails right here in Desert Mountain with some of the best routes for hiking in the entire county.

They range from easy beginner trails to real lung busters! I encourage you to try them if you haven’t already.

Remember to hike in a group, or at least let someone know where you are going, dress appropriately and carry more water than you think necessary.

President’s Letter

On your mark, get set, go…

A

nd so begins the start of another productive year for your Community Board of Directors.

Our “mark” was recently established at our strategic planning session on February 4th where our Treasurer Derek Hill led the discussion to review and establish our board priorities for 2019. Many of these were carryover initiatives from the previous year, which required only a summary of progress and restating the challenges. New priorities were developed based on what we have “heard on the Mountain”, Desert Mountain Club, Inc. (DMCI) comments and those retrieved during our quarterly meetings with the Council of Presidents. All of our actions are measured and achievable; and considered to be a benefit to the community.

This was followed by assigning each subject to the appropriate Board Committee Chair and staff with progress reviewed at our subsequent Board meetings.

Each Board Committee Chair is identified in my annual report along with their committee members who were approved at our February board meeting of the 25th (refer to page 19-20).

And so another year begins with new members, new challenges and our continuing commitment to serve the needs of our wonderful Desert Mountain Community.

ne of the important initiatives for the Master Association in 2018 was the distribution of a community wide survey. Circulated on November 27, 2018, the purpose was to receive important feedback with respect to items under the responsibility of the Master Association… simply put, we wanted to hear what you thought about the Master Board, Staff, Security, Design Review and Desert Mountain Parkway maintenance.

We were pleased to receive 735 responses to our survey and over 1,100 written comments. Our Communications Committee will begin to tackle the job of digesting the comments submitted in order to better understand where the successes… and failures…are, and how we can improve in 2019. A snap shot of the results may be seen on the adjacent page.

Operations

B

eginning in 2019, the scheduling of projects approved in 2018 is in progress, the completion of the Desert Mountain Area Drainage Master Study is winding down, and planning will begin for the 2020 Road Preservation Project.

Operations is in the initial stages of work with engineering firm, Wood Patel, to review our RFP for patching, crack fill and seal coat projects to be scheduled during the first two quarters of 2020. The goal is to have the roads visually inspected by a qualified road maintenance expert. The expert will develop the scope of work, obtain vendor proposals to be reviewed by staff, and present proposals for approval at the October 2019 Master and Villages meetings.

Wood Patel would then provide project management oversight to ensure vendors perform the work per the bid specifications. In 2016, Wood Patel provided project management oversight for approximately 25 miles of pavement preservation projects in Saguaro Forest, Gambel Quail, Mountain Skyline and Rose Quartz and exceeded our expectations. There are some different seal coat products not previously implemented at Desert Mountain, however, we are testing a product called Onyx onsite, as well as inspecting an application of a seal coat product manufactured locally by Top Guard in

Mesa. More information on these pavement preservation projects will be provided in future Connection articles.

In light of the major snowstorm that occurred in our Community on February 22nd, we were able to Bruce Spilka coordinate with the City Director of Operations of Scottsdale Sanitation Department to service the community’s bulk trash needs on Sunday March 3rd. If you missed the pick-up date, please be advised that the next service week is March 25th. Please contact the Community Office for more information at 480-635-5600.

Lastly, when inspecting your property for storm damage, please make sure to follow all guidelines pertaining to NAOS (Natural Area Open Space). As a reminder, a fallen tree or broken branch in the NAOS is not to be removed as the area is to remain natural. You need specific approval by the City of Scottsdale to remove items in the NAOS. Refer to the City website for more information or call 480312-2500.

Safety & Access Update

W

hile the Community’s Annual Meeting was well attended, many of you were unable to be there. Therefore, I would like to provide a brief recap of what you missed.

Our 2018 Committee members were recognized for their efforts on projects: Safety and Access Committee members are Chairman Mike Klonoski, David Ostermeyer, Bob Mourad, Jim Scotti, and Jim Duffey; Covenants Committee members are Chairman Paul Sefcovic, Jim Hogshire, and Cathy Ostermeyer.

The projects addressed by Committee members and staff: • Shared Services Agreement with DMCI: this written agreement identified services provided between the community and club. Previously this was a verbal agreement.

• Emergency Operations Plan: a joint effort between Desert Mountain Club and the HOA and was started in 2018, and projected to be completed in 2019. An outside consultant has been contracted by both parties to assist in developing the plan.

A Community Survey was distributed on November 27, 2018 which covered several topics. I want to highlight the responses about security: 1) The level of security makes me feel safe: 95.3% satisfied.

2) The security staff is courteous and responsive: 94.6% satisfied.

3) The level of speed enforcement on Desert Mountain Parkway is appropriate: 79.4% satisfied.

The security team processed 1.06 million arrivals and answered 109,470 phone calls while maintaining a 94.6% satisfactory rating from you – what a tremendous feat!

GateAccess.net mobile app: usage increased by 15% in 2018 and we thank you as homeowners in utilizing this tool to increase efficiencies in our operations. eGo tags: as the volume of arrivals increase each year so do the number of

Currently we have 10,800 vehicles using the system.

Safety Rule Violations: speeding, parking, etc. may be appealed to the Covenants Committee.

This committee met five times last year, and heard 65 appeals in 2018. A total of 1,451 speeding violations were issued.

Safety & Access Update Ru2 Speeding Devices: these devices located on our roadways, gathered data and indicated positive results in deterring speeders. For the period of 2016-2018, speeding has dropped from 5.94% to 1.57% of vehicles traveling 10 MPH or greater over the posted speed limit. Given our current traffic counts we will estimate annually 3,000+ vehicles are traveling 10 MPH or greater over the posted speed limit on our roads.

The Town of Carefree released information stating they have requested Maricopa County Sheriffs Office (MCSO) to help reduce speeding in their town on the following roads: Cave Creek Road from Desert Mountain Parkway to Mule Train, Carefree Highway, Stagecoach Pass and Tom Darlington.

Speeding violations issued by MCSO can be a fine of $244 and (3) points against your Drivers License. (Source: Carefree COINS 02.04.19)

Anderson Security responded to 140 medical calls and it was confirmed one life was saved within Desert Mountain (note: Scottsdale Fire Department verifies report of lives saved). Additionally, Anderson Security responded to more than 25,059 general calls for service.

Javelina They are everywhere. One of the best places to get information about our wild animals is at the Arizona Game and Fish website: www.azgfd. com. However, here are a few things you can do to alleviate some of the visiting peccaries. Javelina love all types of fruit, prickly pear bushes, birdseed, garbage and dog/cat food.

Javelina can be aggressive especially when they are protecting their young.

Should you come across a herd, turn around and walk the other way.

They have very poor eyesight. Please remember we have invaded their home.

Trash/recycle cans Please be aware that security is tagging cans that are out before or after the City of Scottsdale guidelines.

Cans should be located at the curb after 6 p.m. the night prior to pick-up and taken in by 6 p.m. the day of pickup. In addition, one day a month we have bulk/brush trash pick-up. This service is for homeowners only, not to be used by landscape companies.

Prepare for 2019 Storm Season Storm season will be upon us before we know it. National Weather Service in Arizona has identified Storm Season as June 15th thru September 30th, (formerly called Monsoon Season). Owners are encouraged to remove any dead debris from your lot, create a defensible space removing dead debris surrounding your home (10-15 feet) and raise the canopy of any trees you have. If you would like a free inspection of your home, you may call the Scottsdale Fire Department, Life Safety Division at 480-312-1855.

Master Association Finance

T

he Desert Mountain Master Association started strong for the first month of 2019. The Master Association ended January with excess revenue over expense of nearly $65,000. Total Revenue was better than budget by $79,000 due to Design Review Activity, Misc. Income and Traffic Violations. All other income lines were materially on budget. Total Operating Expenses were over budget by $19,000, mainly due to Professional Fees related to Design Review activity. Material areas of the budget such as Administration, Landscape maintenance and Guard Service were all on budget. Scheduled Culvert Cleaning will begin in February and last through June. Due to rainfall in late 2018, Culvert Cleaning in 2019 will likely be over budget by approximately $20,000. Lastly, through January $75,000 was transferred to reserves on a budget of $70,000. The Desert Mountain Master Association continues to be financially sound due to outstanding expense oversight by your DMMA Board of Directors and CCMC Staff and steady Design Review activity.

Seven Arrows The entry monument is due to be refurbished and painted this year. The common area stucco walls in Seven Arrows will also receive repairs with new stucco and paint application.

2020 Roadwork As Bruce mentions in his operations article, there will be a tremendous amount of road work in 2020. That process is starting now with RFPs being prepared and distributed.

The 2020 roadwork will be approved in the last quarter of 2019 for completion in February 2020 – July 2020.

Desert Broom Removal So far, nine villages are proactively removing Desert Broom plants from their common areas. DLC Resources is the selected contractor due to their knowledge of NAOS easement restrictions. The level of Desert Broom and work involved varies greatly across each village. The villages of Arrowhead, Apache Peak, Cochise Ridge, Deer Run, Painted Sky, Renegade Trail, Lone Mountain II, Lookout Ridge and Lost Star have already proceeded with the plant removal.

This project involves a one-time removal and an annual maintenance program to remove newly grown Desert Broom plants each year. The plant is not eradicated, but

Sonoran Cottages & Sonoran Ridge Staff is gathering proposals for irrigation and lighting replacement. We anticipate receiving the proposals by the 2nd quarter of 2019, with the project completed this year.

Sonoran Enclave will have the same project completed in 2020.

Village Grass Areas & Usage Please remember grass areas within villages are for those residents’ usage only. Those villages that have a grass area pay for those areas out of their village assessments.

Residents should not bring their dogs to these areas for playtime. The Desert Mountain Club has a beautiful dog park for your furry friends. The dog park is located just prior to entering the Cochise Geronimo Clubhouse.

Lookout Ridge Unit Painting Every unit and common area wall is due for painting in 2019. This project was approved in December 2018.

Painting is scheduled to begin in March 18, 2019 and last through August 9, 2019, weather permitting. Homeowners can expect the following: minor caulking and patching repairs, painting the rear metal patio railings, and removing and reinstalling the gate wood slats and repainting the metal gate surfaces. The paint will be Dunn Edwards 100% exterior acrylic paint, Mesa Tan. Additionally, the rear patio metal railings and gates will be spot primed at rust areas and painted with Dunn Edwards Aristoshield gloss black.

All Homeowners will receive a letter with the pertinent information and a tentative schedule.

Handyman and Home Caretaker Services

T

he Owner Services Business (OSB) is a service available to all Master Association members, even renters with approval from the owner. The available OSB services are convenient, and give owners peace of mind since our Handyman and Home Caretaker are familiar with the mountain and its residents. Our purpose is to reduce an owner’s burden when they are in need of small repairs or a home caretaking.

There are two main aspects of the business; Light Handyman and the Home Caretaker. Rick Fields is Desert Mountain’s light handyman. Rick has been with Desert Mountain for five years, has served well over 500 residences, which equates to nearly 30% of all homes in Desert Mountain. The term “light handyman” can mean many things for our residents, including, but not limited to: replacing light bulbs and batteries in smoke alarms, small drywall patching and painting, hanging of artwork and pictures, and even receiving deliveries. Regardless of the services our owners require, the cost is just $60 an hour.

The other aspect of the OSB is Home Caretaker service.

Desert Mountain’s home caretaker, Scott McVay, can take care of your home while you are away, or even while you’re here. Home Caretaker service consists of a detailed checklist that is gone through at each visit along with a report sent out to you within 24 hours of each check. Scott also arranges and coordinates any vendor visits that need to take place while you are away. For example, if there is an issue with the pool, landscaping, or water heater, Scott contacts your vendors to coordinate a time for them to meet at the house to repair/work on the issue.

“Several years ago, my caretaker moved out of state in midsummer. I had to get someone to take the job on short notice. I asked the HOA team to have my home monitored several times per month and it worked so well that I use them every year when my wife and I are gone. Scott has been great, as has Rick the handyman. We are used to working with people who care about us, and the HOA team makes us comfortable and they are on top of all the little things that need attention. Highly recommended!”

Design Review

We Live in the Most Beautiful Part of the Sonoran Desert… so let’s keep it that way!

A

s we all know, each owner is required to maintain the landscape on their lot in an attractive manner; but some may not understand the objectives and requirements for maintaining appealing landscape within Desert Mountain. One of the original design standards established when Desert Mountain was first envisioned is the objective that all of the landscaping located around the perimeter of the home and site walls shall have a natural, undisturbed desert character and appearance. The natural desert appearance shall wrap the built improvements so that the home feels seamlessly nestled into the natural desert landscape.

The desert landscape around the home should not be allowed to become visually unattractive, barren, sparse, or manicured. In general, the landscape area around the perimeter of the home should require little to no maintenance since this area is intended to appear the same as the undisturbed native desert. Owners can save money on their monthly landscape costs by simply instructing their landscaper to leave the desert area around the home alone.

To create Defensible Space around your home, the key is to remove only dead grass or dead plants that could fuel a fire. It is not an acceptable practice to remove live native plants or creating a barren swath around the home as it will create an unnatural appearance and may result in excessive erosion conditions. If the native vegetation within 15’ of the home is heavily overgrown or extremely dense, it is acceptable to thin some of the plants in order to allow a person to meander between the remaining plants. City of

Scottsdale Defensible Space JT Elbracht brochure specifically states Design Review Consultant that the “fire break should contain only small brush, cacti and trees…” Again, do not remove the live plants when creating a Defensible Space.

It is also important for owners to understand a significant portion of most lots is legally dedicated as Natural Area Open Space (NAOS) via an easement recorded on the property when the home was constructed. Per the legal language of the NAOS Easement, no disturbance of any type, including the removal of plant material, is allowed within the NAOS Easement. For most homes, the NAOS Easement is located about 5’ away from the site walls and buildings. Therefore, in order for an Owner to comply with the legal requirements of the NAOS Easement, they may not modify, trim, prune, groom, or remove the landscape within the NAOS Easement. (An exception allowed to the NAOS Easement would be the removal of desert broom and mistletoe which are considered invasive plants).

The easy way to view appropriate landscape maintenance is fairly simple…all of the landscape around the perimeter of the home should be maintained to look like the natural, undisturbed desert. The goal is to let Mother Nature reestablish around the perimeter of the home in order for the home to nestle quietly into the natural desert.

• Landscape maintenance around the perimeter of the home should be limited to the removal of dead plant material and the removal of defined weeds. Other than that, the native desert landscape should be left to grow naturally. It doesn’t need any more work than that!

• The area around the perimeter of the home should not have a manicured, trimmed, pruned, raked or groomed appearance. No need to trim or prune. No need to rake or groom.

• Allow the small native grasses and small native plant material to grow on the desert floor. It is important to let the small seasonal native plants provided by Mother Nature to fill in.

• Imported decomposed granite top dressing should not be used in any of the landscape areas beyond the site walls; instead the natural desert soil shall remain. Imported decomposed granite is only allowed behind the site walls within courtyards and enclosed rear yards.

• Only native and indigenous plants, as specifically listed in Section 8.14.1 of the Design Guidelines, are allowed beyond the footprint of the home and site walls. Remember, although some plants are arid-type plants, they may not be indigenous to our local desert, so always verify that the plants are on the List of Approved Indigenous Plants in Section 8.14.1 of the Design Guidelines.

• 75% of the plants around the perimeter of home should be the native dominant ground cover shrubs, such as “Turpentine Bush” or “Bursage.” These common shrubs are the plants that tie the desert landscaping together. It is not acceptable to remove the natural desert shrubs and only leave the trees and cacti. Remember, the goal is to match the appearance of the natural desert.

• It is not acceptable to clear or remove the native vegetation around the perimeter of the home.

• No landscape lighting is allowed beyond the footprint of the site walls, except along the driveways when specifically approved by the Design Review Committee.

• The landscape areas that are around the perimeter of the home should be maintained in such a manner that they resemble in appearance the undisturbed natural desert.

T

he Master Board of Directors celebrated a busy and productive year for the Community at the most recent Annual Meeting of the Members on January 21st. An overview of the year’s accomplishments was presented to those in attendance.

I am happy to report a number of significant initiatives and projects were addressed by the entire team last year.

Accomplishments included the passing of an amendment to restrict short-term rentals and completing a community wide survey, which our Executive Director Kevin Pollock discusses in his report. Other highlights included the replacement of all village gate operators, a collaborative branding initiative with the Desert Mountain Club and the Emergency Preparedness Project. Our presentation, which outlines all of last year’s successes, can be found on the Community website.

The Annual Meeting also welcomed three new Board Members; elected for three-year terms. Congratulations to

Frank Brown, Bill Eckholm and Kevin Frawley and a special thanks to all those who expressed interest in volunteering to represent the Master Association.

Our three new Board Members joined the rest of the Board for an Rich Sherman Organizational Meeting and a Strategic President Planning Meeting in the weeks following Desert Mountain the Annual Meeting.

Master Association The Strategic Planning Meeting started the conversation with respect to goals for the community this year. The outside Desert Mountain that following list identifies areas, among impact our residents, updates to others, the Board wants to focus on in the Design Review Guidelines, 2019: compliance issues and identifying • Services and Amenities – areas of improvement in relation to renovation of the front entrance our community survey results monument and review of contracts • Finance – meeting the approved for our service providers budget and proper reserve funding • Club Interaction – identify and • Safety/Security –road and bicycle discuss initiatives to collaborate safety with Desert Mountain Club • Homeowner Happiness and The full list of goals is challenging, Value –introduction of an updated yet achievable and relevant to our community website, tracking community. The Organizational Meeting allowed us to appoint a Chair for each committee.

Covenants – Paul Sefcovic will return to this Committee, to hear appeals from owners, residents and vendors with respect to compliance and safety violations.

Design Review – Paul Sefcovic, who enters into the last year of his first term on the Board, will take over the reins for the Design Review Committee.

This extremely busy and important committee strives to maintain the building and landscaping standards within the community.

Landscape & Infrastructure – Tom Scavone, in his fifth year on the Board, leads the Committee to continue to focus on beautification of our common elements.

Communications – Sissy Sailors, enters her sixth and final year on the Board, and takes over Communications and its robust list of projects, which includes the new website and Connection magazine.

Owners Services Business – Frank Brown, another newcomer possesses considerable business experience to help grow our very valuable home caretaking and handyman business.

Elections – Sissy Sailors also Chairs this Committee, which focuses on recruitment and vetting potential candidates to run for Board positions.

Parkway Renovation – Our last newcomer, Bill Eckholm, assumes control over this extremely important Committee as we inch closer to the renovation of Desert Mountain Parkway.

Legal – Kevin Frawley, one of the newcomers on the Board, brings his experience as an attorney to head the Legal Committee.

Along with new Treasurer Derek Hill, this group will guide the Community in 2019 as we continue to make Desert Mountain one of the finest private golf and recreational Communities in the world.

Safety & Access – Mike Klonoski continues his work with this Committee. Already seeing improvements with respect to fewer speeding vehicles since he took over the committee last year, he will tackle implementation of the collaborative Emergency Preparedness Plan with the Desert Mountain Club.

ottom Line Up Front: 2018 revenue exceeded budget by over $405,000 (9%) and total expenses came in at $182,000 (5%) above budget. This allowed a total transfer to reserves of $1,115,000, which was $215,000 (24%) more than originally planned, and another year without an increase in the Master Association assessments! The last increase in Master Association dues was in 2017.

I would like to thank the past Board and the staff for the successful financial year the Master Association had in 2018. And, a special thank you to immediate past Treasurer, Bob Engelman!

Home construction activity on the Mountain was greater than anticipated and led to Design Review and construction access fees exceeding budget by close to $250,000. Also surprising was traffic fine income of slightly more than $95,000. Traffic fine income is unbudgeted and is spent on unbudgeted security-enhancing items.

culvert cleaning, professional fees due to the increased Design Review activity, income taxes and the Short Term Rental Restriction initiative. The Short Term Rental initiative added unbudgeted costs to legal fees, professional fees, meeting expenses and office supplies due to continuous legal review, auditor oversight of the vote and additional mailing costs.

At the close of 2018, we had nearly $5,270,000 in long-term reserves for the Master Association. This keeps us on path for the parkway reconstruction. Though budgeted for reconstruction in 2020, current thinking is that the project may be delayed a couple of years. The Parkway Committee will be reviewing this project in the beginning part of 2019.

The 19 unincorporated villages also had a good year and entered 2019 with reserves adequate to handle anticipated needs. Most villages saw no increase in dues and those that do will see a very small increase.

Is your irrigation system ready for summer?

Take a walk around your yard while the irrigation

Lockboxes available for senior safety.

Lockboxes for seniors allow police or firefighters to gain entry to a home without breaking in if the resident is unable to get to the door in an emergency.

The Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors, Scottsdale Police and Fire departments and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office offer free emergency lockboxes for seniors and others with special needs whose annual income is less than $25,000. Desert Mountain Area Drainage Master Study Thank you, Desert Mountain Community!

Community Meeting February 26, 2019 More than 50 Desert Mountain Community residents and staff attended the community meeting on February 26. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County (FCD) would like to thank those who joined us, and special thanks to the Community for hosting the meeting.

Information presented at the meeting included poster boards displaying information about sedimentation and erosion, potential roadway and pedestrian risks, potential structural flooding risks, and floodplain delineation. Participants also were able to view preliminary computer model results, where an individual can select their address and see what is projected to happen during a heavy storm.

Floodplain Delineation This study area has never been evaluated and modeled for flood risks. Since the risks are “unknown,” flood insurance is much more expensive than in areas where flood risks are “known.” Formally delineating a floodplain through FEMA can help make flood

insurance much more affordable. However, homes that are located within a formally delineated floodplain are required by federal law to have flood insurance, if they have a mortgage.

The majority of people who attended the meeting indicated that they are in favor of floodplain delineation. FCD and the City of Scottsdale may move forward with floodplain delineation, and that process would entail additional public involvement.

Desert Mountain Community Foundation The Desert Mountain Community Foundation raises funds to benefit our employees, our places and our community.

2018 Raffle The DMCF Annual Raffle was a huge success, 300 tickets sold out in record time. A drawing and celebration party was held on January 14, 2019 at the Sunset Terrace.

Attendees included raffle ticket purchasers, CEO Damon DiOrio, scholars and DMCF Board members. $24,000 was raised from the raffle for the Employee Scholarship Fund.

CARE STARS Beacons of Hope in the Fight Against Cancer.

A history to be proud of…

I

t has been twenty years since Desert Mountain Members’ CARE tournament kicked off as a grassroots cancer fund raising effort by some exceptional caring and compassionate Desert Mountain members. In those twenty years, cancer research, detection, and treatment have advanced in leaps and bounds. Desert Mountain Members’ CARE contributors should be very proud that our community has played a meaningful role in funding these medical advancements.

As CARE has grown and matured, Desert Mountain Members have become significant contributors to the research efforts of HonorHealth and Mayo Clinic of Arizona. Over $6.9 million that CARE has donated to date. Your generosity has been amazing and the progress to intercept cancer made possible by your donations, is fantastic.

One of the programs supported is the HonorHealth Cellular Therapy Research Program. This program focuses on novel treatments that involve transplanting human cells to replace or repair damaged cells…similar to now-common cell therapies such as blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants. At Mayo Clinic of AZ, CARE is helping to fund the INTERCEPT Program. INTERCEPT testing will determine whether a patient has a sporadic or inherited form of cancer, a critical distinction which determines the appropriate cancer treatment for each patient.

Preparing Your Irrigation System for Spring By:Tony Amezcua, DLC Field Manager

S

pring is on the horizon and it is time for your landscape to wake up from a cold winter’s nap. As temperatures rise, your trees and shrubs will begin to bloom and grow again. That means it is also time to make sure your irrigation system is ready to start back up to support your plants in the growing season.

Typically from December through February, plants need little water because they are not actively growing.

When we receive good winter rain in the Valley, you can usually turn your entire irrigation system off in the winter for desert-adapted plants. However, when spring arrives, plants and trees begin growing again and you will need to turn your system back on to accommodate that growth.

Checking Your System Before turning your system on for the spring and summer months, you need to test it to make sure your plants are being watered effectively and water is not being wasted. If you are planning to add new plants to your yard this spring, be sure to make sure the system is checked and ready before putting anything in the ground.

Inspect your irrigation system by turning the system on and walking around your yard. Make sure water is only being used to water plants and is not creating wet spots where there are no plants.

Another great way to check for leaks is to turn off all of your water, including the water inside your house and then checking your water meter. If the needle in the meter is still spinning with everything turned off, there is a leak somewhere.

Making Repairs Be aware that even if your system was turned off all winter, there is still a chance that components could have cracked or been damaged. Make necessary repairs to fix

leaks, like replacing broken emitters that might be spraying out water.

While you are making repairs, decide where you need to add new drip lines or emitters to deliver water to any new plants you want to bring in.

Scheduling for Spring Once you have checked that the water delivery system is functioning correctly, move on to your irrigation controller. If needed, reset the controller and enter a schedule appropriate for the needs of your landscape.

Desert adapted plants and trees will typically only need to be watered once every two to four weeks. Non-desert adapted plants need to be watered every week to 10 days.

Keep in mind that new plants may need to be watered more frequently than other plants in your yard in order to help their roots establish.

Monitoring your Soil Make sure moisture from your irrigation system is actually reaching the root zone of your plants. You can probe soil with a screwdriver to find out if your plants are receiving enough water. If the screwdriver goes in easily to approximately 6’’, there is plenty of moisture in the soil.

If not, you need to give your plant material more water.
