For the 64th time, the American Express Championship returned to the Valley this weekend, featuring many of the top players in the world and an $8,000,000 purse with $1,440,000 to the winner.

This year was truly a “duel in the desert,” with Jon Rahm winning his second straight event after winning the Sony Tournament of Champions in Kapalua in his most recent start two weeks ago. Jon is a former US Open Champion and world number one, with his current ranking third in the OWGR rankings and now first in the FedEx Cup standings. This is his 9th Tour victory, and he becomes the ninth multiple winner at the American Express Championship.

The final round began with Rahm and Thompson tied at 23 under par, playing in the final group. Rahm jumped out to a two-shot lead with great approach shots on the first two holes for consecutive birdies. Thompson, a University Georgia product and Walker Cup player, parred his first seven holes. After a monster drive on the par 4 9th, leaving Rahm only 106

to the hole. Rahm hits it to 10 feet, Thompson hits it to 29 feet from 132, and they both made spectacular birdies.

Rahm’s 27 under, 261 total, was sufficient to defeat PGA Tour rookie Davis Thompson by one shot, with Xander Schauffle and Chris Kirk tied for third. Schauffle holed his second shot on the par 5 5th hole from 261 yards for an Albatross to climb up the leaderboard on Sunday. Rahm shot 68 on the Stadium Course at PGA West on Sunday to edge Thompson, who shot 69. Rahm held on with pars on the last two holes, hitting a great shot from a fairway bunker on 18 to 10 feet to set up his victory.

As a tour rookie, Thompson really displayed his talent and perseverance by almost tying Rahm on the final hole with a chip that hit the flagstick and nearly went in. Thompson was the former world number one amateur and never backed down in his 20th Tour start.

He also hit the flagstick with a lengthy birdie putt on the famous 17th island green that would have tied Rahm. A win for Thompson would have been a life-changing event. However, his second-place finish vaulted him into the spotlight and is a preview of great things to come from the Tour rookie.

The deciding hole was the 601-yard par five 16th hole, where after a poor drive, Thompson laid up out of a deep fairway bunker and only managed to make par. After skirting the 25-footdeep “China Wall” bunker on his second shot from 245 yards out, Rahm holed out in two from 98 feet to make birdie and take a one-shot lead.

“It was tough, I’m not going to lie; he (Thompson) gave me a real battle today, and it was a lot of fun.”

The Stadium Couse was in great condition, with perfect weather, no rough, and receptive greens from a lot of rain the week before the event. The course has recently undergone phase one of renovations to bring back the original design intent of Pete Dye, and renovations will continue this upcoming offseason.

Pete referenced his concept of “creating the hardest golf course around, with dramatic desert views and multiple opportunities to hit great golf shots, which will be the reward.” The new ownership of PGA West is pursuing that vision with former Dye architects very familiar with the original design and construction.

Since 2012, there have been three playoffs, 4 one-stroke wins, and 4 two-stroke victories. Next year should be another event to remember, with as exciting a finish as this year’s American Express Championship.

Suddenly the clock at Arrowhead Stadium went on strike! Because the clock runs a few seconds before the Chiefs’ third attempt, there is excitement. The referees correct the clock. Curiously, the third attempt is repeated when the attempt is not enough for a first down. Huge chaos in the stadium, and Bengals coach Zach Taylor understandably foams. What an embarrassing incident.

This is how the thriller works: With 41 seconds left on the clock, the Chiefs regain possession of the ball. After a punt, Moore runs to the 47yard line.

With 17 seconds left on the clock, things get really wild: Mahomes runs out with his injured ankle. Mahomes gets a good one on the cap from Bengals defender Ossai. Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15-Yard Penalty! Ossai also injured his knee badly. Suspected cruciate ligament tear!

From this follows the excellent field position for the Chiefs: 45 yards for a field goal. Kicker Butker cleans it up. 23:20! The Chiefs are in the Super Bowl!

Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers (31-7)

Rarely has a semifinal in the NFL been clearer. The 49ers keep up for a half, then they almost have to stop playing.

Because: In the 49ers, both quarterbacks are injured in the game with Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy and his backup Josh Johnson; with Johnson out with a concussion, Purdy has to get back on the field. But since he can’t throw, the 49ers must unwrap every running play they’ve ever used. They don’t stand a chance without a passing game against the strong Eagles!

First diagnosis after the field: injury of the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. Sounds painful.

Also, a reason? Before the game, 49ers fans decorated the legendary Rocky statue in Philadelphia with a jersey from their team. That didn’t work at all this season.

Both the Giants and Vikings fans

had done this during the regular season. But it didn’t work! Both teams lost. That’s why the Rocky curse is already being celebrated on social media.

Led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Eagles set the game’s pace. Thanks to four rushing touchdowns, there is a clear victory! The Eagles streaked for 148 total yards.

However, Hurts only throws for 121 yards. So the 49er’s pass defense is doing its job. Only with the offensive should it not work.

The Rancho Mirage Speakers Series brought its first guest, Hockey Great Wayne Gretzky, to the Agua Caliente Resort

Casino Spa SHOW on Monday, January 23. Wayne Gretzky is a four-time Stanly Cup Champion and winner of many titles and awards during his career. Over 400 people came to listen to one of the best Hockey players in the world. The show was a Q&A session with Christine Simpson as moderator, who is wellversed in Hockey.

Gretzky talked a lot about his father and how he fell in love with Hockey at the age of 4 when he watched Gordie Howe play. Howe became his idol, and he met him at age 10. His father and family were great supporters in helping him on his course as a superior hockey player. Gretsky said he loved other sports and played some. Playing different sports helped him with his Hockey playing.

He said Hockey was so different when he played. He loved the bus rides and airplane trips. The comradery of the players. Hockey was not a well-known sport, especially in Los Angeles. They worked hard to bring Hockey into a fan-favorite sport. He said they knew they had to start with the young kids first to get their parents to games and help them in this sport.

He played with the number 9 to honor his idol Gordie Howe but came to wear the number 99. He eventually became friends with Howe and his family. Gretzky spoke about some games where the lights went out and another where it was so cold the ice was not good. Ice must be kept at a

specific temperature to be suitable for skating.

He said he was talked into acting in a soap opera, and he was so wrong. He told me about other stints, like one on Saturday Night Live. He has a great sense of humor and had the audience laugh at his stories. When asked about other players, he mentioned greats like Bobby Orr, Grant Fehr, Patrick Kane, and some of the newer players making a name for themselves.

He said that the equipment was so different back then too. If you got a concussion, you took two aspirin and slept well. But, the love of the game kept everyone working to make it bigger and better. He was asked about the new Acrisure Hockey Arena. He said it was an honor to drop the first puck at the home game the night before. He was amazed at how the arena was built and how wonderful it is to have an ice arena here in the Valley.

He was asked how it felt to have a pro golfer in the family as his son-inlaw. He said they don’t talk Hockey or golf. However, he understands the passion one has for his choice of sport. There were so many stories that brought a lot of laughter, but there were too many to mention here. Simpson asked him some questions from the audience that brought more laughter.

Kretzky did a meet and greet after the show. Fans wore Gretzky Jerseys and brought items to get autographed. Acrisure Arena will bring even more fans to Hockey. The next Rancho Mirage speaker will be Football legend Emmitt Smith on February 21 at the SHOW.

BITTER END OF A WORLD CAREER

For this crap season, Brady sacrificed his marriage with Gisele.

NFL superstar Tom Brady (45) has once again announced his retirement on February 1.

Already in 2022, the quarterback decided to stop playing football. His official reason at the time was to spend more time with his family. Six weeks later, Brady’s fingers were still itching. Gone was the retirement; gone was the time with his family.

Especially to the annoyance of his then-wife, Gisele Bündchen! According to media reports, the supermodel had been pushing hard for the end of her career. Brady planned his life differently, however.

In the following preparation, Brady sat out, at times even 14 days, to settle for “a lot of crap,” as the best footballer of all time summarized it. What was meant was a crisis vacation

with Gisele in the Bahamas.

In the end, the last attempt did not work out. At the end of October, both announced their divorce.

From a sporting point of view, things didn’t go any better for Brady’s Buccaneers! He experienced the worst NFL season of his career, with only eight wins and nine losses. He made it to the playoffs only thanks to the lousy division of the Buccaneers.

But there was the end of the line in the 1st round! With 14:31, it gave

Local Community Commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On January 27th, 1945, the Russian Red Army liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest concentration and death camp. Of the 1.3 million individuals sent to Auschwitz, 1.1 million died.

In 2005 the United Nations designated January 27th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, urging world countries to honor the 6 million Jewish victims and millions of other victims of Nazism and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.

The day is meant to honor the survivors and the 6 million Jews killed in Nazi Germany, or over a third of the world’s Jewish population in 1939, which totaled 16.6 million, and to reaffirm people’s commitment to never forget.

On Friday, January 27th, 2023, The Mensch International Foundation held a community-wide commemoration at Palm Desert’s Civic Park, marking

the 78th anniversary of the liberation of AuschwitzBirkenau. Students from Sacred Heart and Palm Desert Charter Middle School were in attendance.

On Sunday, January 29th, 2023, the local community gathered together during a ceremony The Jewish Federation of the Desert held to remember the victims and pay tribute to the survivors and heroes of this dark chapter in human history.

Three women were shot dead at a party in a million-dollar mansion
