Although it’s official that the recession is over and we’re in a recovery, it may not feel like it to those experiencing unemployment or fallen home values. However, Arizona’s economy is actually improving quite strongly; even outpacing the nation. The US economy is expected to grow at 3% in 2011. Local economists are predicting Arizona’s expansion to exceed that growth with a 3.3% to 3.4%. In fact, the Phoenix market leads the nation in private-sector job growth according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Phoenix’s year-toyear increase of 2.3% in jobs far exceeds other major markets, with some cities still losing jobs at a rate of 3%. More encouraging news, the number of distressed property owners is shrinking. The percentage of homeowners who are behind on their payments dropped to a new two-year low during the 4th quarter of 2010. Fewer loans are entering the foreclosure pipeline, helping to stabilize our housing market further. The worst is over and we are rebuilding, now actually at a pretty solid clip.
