Bob Hope USO Palm Springs Named One of the Top USO Centers in United States

Left to right: Bob Kurkjian, Executive Director, Bob Hope USO, Teresa Cherry, Manager, Bob Hope USO Palm Springs, Sgt. Major Bryan Battaglia, USMC, Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman, Joints Chiefs of Staff.

T

he Bob Hope USO at Palm Springs International Airport was named the Top “Small USO Center” in the annual “Tell USO” survey. The award was presented to Center Manager Teresa Cherry by USO President and CEO, J.D. Crouch ll, who was joined by Sergeant Major Bryan Battaglia, the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the most senior enlisted member of the United States Armed Forces. “This is a huge accomplishment for our Palm Springs team, and is based on worldwide survey results from troops and military families,” said Bob Hope USO Executive Director, Bob Kurkjian. “They are the ones that provide USO with the feedback, and that feedback said that among the 105 USO Centers in the Unit ed States, our Palm Springs Center was the best small center in the country!” The USO center recognized their many volunteers with a celebration at the Palm Springs American Legion. The event was catered by Loco Charlies the new Mexican Grill at 1751 N. Sunrise Way.

Key_1_25_June_2015.indd 12

Along with the festivities, Teresa Cher ry thanked the volunteers who were responsible for making the Palm Springs USO place top in the county. Top USO Center award recipients received the highest overall scores in satisfaction, value, staff helpfulness and friendliness in their category. In the United States, awards were handed down to top scorers in three categories based on size: small, medium and large. These categories were based on the total number of annual visits to the location. Unbeknown to many, the USO is a private, non-profit organization that is not a part of the government or Department of Defense. It relies entirely on donations from the pub lic and support from philanthropic ad patriotic groups and businesses. To find out how you can support the USO, or volunteer, please visit www.BobHopeUSO.org. Office is located at 210 N. El Cielo, 100 yards North West of the airport terminal.

“Both Sides Now: Robert Heinecken Photograms” Palm Springs Art Museum May 23 through September 11, 2015

A

pioneer in the exploration of media iconography as cultural critique, Robert Heinecken’s photograms high light female sexuality in the 1980’s as it is exploited in the media. Heinecken’s Recto/Verso series of photograms (1989) in this exhibition are made without the use of camera or film. A single page is appropriated from a mass circulation magazine, placed in direct contact with color photographic paper, and exposed to light. The result ing image superimposes the visual and verbal information from the front (recto) and back (verso) of the magazine page. When commercial fashion photog raphy in the 1980’s focused on female models posing with various products, Heinecken created pictures portraying complicated combinations of visual and verbal information revealing the fusion of vanity and consumption that under lies advertising. Narcissism, decadence,

Key_1_25_June_2015.indd 20

eroticism, passion, spirituality, and family combine to expose the ways that the bodies of women are used to support cultural assumptions. Twelve photographic writers and curators were each asked to address one of the Recto/Verso Cibachrome photograms. Their comments, printed on document-grade vellum and framed, are exhibited next to the prints. This portfolio is a generous gift to the museum’s permanent collec tion from Jerome and Elaine Morgan. The exhibition is in the Marks Graphics Center and Jorgensen Gallery at Palm Springs Art Museum, located at 101 Museum Drive in downtown Palm Springs. Lyons English Grill bought by Birba group … now called Mr. Lyons Steak House

I

t’s the beginning of a new era. Come taste the New Classic at Mr. Lyons, where we give steak a conscientious modern update with a menu that puts local small farms first. You may know our space, family-owned and operated for over 70 years by David Lyons as Lyons English Grill. Reimagined in 2015 by Tara Lazar, Mr. Lyons is the newest offering from the Foundation 10 family, taking the same attention to detail we’ve brought to Cheeky’s, Birba and Alcazar to a new vista on the South end of town. Evoking the old Hollywood glamour that Palm Springs is famous for, our dining salon is black and white marble, wood, brass, and luxurious velvet booths; a fine dining experience steeped in classic elegance. The menu is steak-centered with an endless choice of sides, and the tableside service--a hallmark of classic steak house dining--offers the kind of personalized experience you won’t soon forget. If you’re looking for an informal night out, sample the laidback menu in our lounge, a more casual setting for savoring a true classic cocktail or something seasonal and new. We also have two private dining rooms for special events and will soon be offering patio seating. Located at 233 East Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs. 760.327.1551

East Coast Deli with West Coast Style Sherman’s Deli and Bakery is a true culinary landmark in Palm Springs and Palm Desert. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this Kosher-style family restaurant has been the “meeting place” for locals, vacationers and celebrities for over a half a century. Sherman Harris came to the desert in 1953 to visit a friend at Lawry’s Steak Ranch. He fell in love with the area, stayed on to manage the ranch and realized his true calling when he opened Sherman’s Deli and Bakery. A true family restaurant, it is now run by his son Sam and daughter Janet. Sherman may not be with us anymore, but his presence is felt every day in every way. Sam and Janet remember bussing tables and waiting on tables and listening to their father’s frequent reminders to “treat every one who came through the doors as though they were a guest in your home”. He loved his customers and his community and they loved him back. Sherman’s loyalty and dedication to customer service is as evident today as it was then, carried out by Sam and Janet in the same caring manner as always.
