The Junior Bowlers Tour's 25th season wrapped up with lots of Arizona bowlers capturing spots on the coveted All-Conference AllStar teams, and earning a large chunk of the almost $170,000 in scholarships to bowlers of all ages and skill levels.

lings finished 1-2 on this list. Zach Greim, TPC champ Brock Bivins, and last year's All-Conference champ Cerell Cardines round out the all-star team.

2021-22 All American Classic League The All American Scratch Classic is forming for the upcoming 2021-22 fall season. Contact the All-American Classic Facebook page, Joseph D. Sharp or Dave Cirigliano to reserve your spot!

The center pays lineage for the sweeper. Lineage maintained from last season $10 for 3 games! Last season over $600 added to prize fund from Bowling Dynamics donations!

The league has 4 person teams (any combination male and female) cap is 850.

New Mexico Open Week Starts August 16th at Tenpins and More in Rio Rancho Rio Rancho, NM: The 17th New Mexico Open bowling tournament, postponed from last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, hits the 24 lanes at Tenpins & More on Monday August 16 for a weeklong "kegfest" of near-major proportions.

Overall prize-money in the main event, running Friday through Sunday (August 20-22) has been increased over $ 5,000 to more than $ 60,000 and total pay-outs from the side events, including three separate sweepers, a threeday Pro-Am and bracket play will push the total available to more than $ 70,000, according to tournament manager, Steve Mackie.

"Sponsors have been generous, given business restrictions this past seventeen months, enabling us to add to the pot", said Mackie. "As well, Pitre Kia, Buick/ GMC will award a $ 20,000 Buick car to the first bowler to roll a perfect game of 300 in the four-bowler championship round on August 22", he added.

Defending champion is Duane Mellinger of Colorado, who, at 57 in 2019, beat Kloempken 461-423 in the two-game final. Mellinger is back to winning form again following a successful battle against cancer earlier this year.

Cesar Padilla totally dominated the U17 subdivision, winning 8 times to lock up the crown. He was joined by Californians Elias O'Hollaren and Daniel Hong, Oregon's Bud Sicard, and Nevada's Sebastian Huffman.

Madison Holman's 5 Girls Scratch wins were enough to get her on that division's All-Star team, which was led by New Mexico's Aileen Linares, and joined by Emily Cheesman, Katelyn Abigania, and Kendall Bollea, making a second All-Star appearance on the season.

Josh Williams and 9 year-old Araceli Hunt began the 26th season of Junior Bowlers Tour competition with exciting wins at the annual Desert Open Marathon, hosted by Glenfair Lanes. Over $4,800 in scholarships were earned by all ages and skill levels.

Bowlers competed on three difficult patterns to qualify for sixteenbowler matchplay. Keith Ylvisaker was the only bowler to manage a 200 average in qualifying, but match play did not go well for him, falling to #16 Noel Hernandez. Noel was then stopped by quickly improving #9 Madison Holman, who then went on to double in the tenth to beat #5 Skyler McGowan and advance to the final.

Amidst the usual chaos of matchplay, #10 Josh Williams rolled along on the other side of the bracket, eliminating #14 Mathew Adragna to set up the title match. Both finalists played well, but in the end Williams remained so steady in a 215-193 win, fourth career JBT title, the coveted glass cactus, a $650 top prize, plus brackets and raffle tickets at every season 26 season that could translate into thousands more for the talented righty.

Hunt led the field on pattern #2, then held off the contenders on a brutal third test (Wolf) to grab the top spot over Gabriel Ortega and Terrell Coates. While other high seeds fell, she was able to outlast #16 Xaden Todacheenie, #9 Chase Simmons, and #12 Jadeyn Mabry to reach the final. #6 Kamryn Wyman rolled through the other side of the bracket, beating Aiden Ruiz-Jimenez, Coates, and Dylan Donahue. This set up a long-awaited title match- the first in JBT history where both players are kids of JBT alumni- Kamryn is the son of 1996-97 JBT Bowler of the Year Matt Jones, and Araceli is the daughter of Tucson alum Matthew Hunt. Wyman had one of the better strike lines of any bowler, but a ninth frame error proved unrecoverable, and the 197-184 final gave Araceli a very memorable first career JBT title!

Holman was consoled with the weekend's Girls Scratch title with a win over Aileen Linares, while Cesar Padilla beat Daryus Alo for the U17 subdivision win. Ebonite balls from our title sponsor were won by CJ Todeschi and Harper Schmidt.

Tucson Metro USBC Update

By Mark R. Kerr Your new Tucson Metro Board held their first meeting, Sunday, August 1 and began its work for the bowlers.

August 1, was the first day for the term for your new Board to officially meet and take action. I want to personally thank the new Board for their commitment to the bowlers and look forward to working with them all. A lot of great ideas were brought up and discussed during this first meeting.

The proposed schedule for Tucson Metro USBC Tournaments for the 2021-22 season was discussed, as well as potential prize funds and formats. This schedule will be discussed at the next Board meeting.

A working budget for the upcoming 2021-22 season was approved by your Board.

Bowling went through the pandemic and we all hope we are coming back in full.

As the Fall Season starts and leagues form, your Board will review the working budget monthly and make adjustments as needed because the question of how many bowlers are returning need to be answered and adjustments may need to be in order.

Your new Board will be meeting more frequently to discuss and take action on bowling items of concern.

Your new Board is working to recognize bowlers for their accomplishments and participation.

It was mine and your Vice President, Donna Hick’s pleasure to represent your Board on August 4, and presented Chip Foust, his 300 ring for his accomplishment on the lanes at Lucky Strike at the Dynamic Duos League.

Also, on August 4, at the Dynamic Duos League, Donna and I presented Matt Heichel for his historic bowling achievement on June 9, also in the Dynamic Duos League.

On June 9, Matt bowled 298-300290, for an 888 series.

Matt’s score is the current, highest sanctioned series in Tucson bowling history. I want to thank Sahuaro Trophy for their work on this trophy. Matt Heichel was also recognized by the City of Tucson, Ward 5 Council Member Richard Fimbres, with a Letter of Accomplishment and Ward 5 Medallion of Hope.

Your new Board also voted to create an award to be posted at the bowling center with the record which will be presented soon and will be moved to the bowling alley that holds it.

Phoenix's Dry Heat Wins Team Gold at Police and Fire Games

Dale Tupper, Chris Hemmen, Mike Grzybowski, and Raymond Johnson The 45th Annual Police and Fire Games was held in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 19th-25th, 2021.

Phoenix area team "Dry Heat", comprised of Dale Tupper, Chris Hemmen, Mike Grzybowski, and

Raymond Johnson won the Team Event Gold Medal in the Masters Division at The Orleans Bowling Center, edging out all other teams by 13 pins across 5 games, shooting 4400 scratch.

In the Singles Event, Chris Hemmen also won the Silver Medal, shooting an 1186 set in the Masters Division.

Next years event is scheduled for August 2nd-7th, 2022. Information can be found at www.npaf.net.

Bill Rhodman, Ted Rebain, and The Paradise

by Dave Williams This month’s issue of Bowlers Journal International contains a two page article by Dennis Bergendorf about The National Bowling Association (TNBA), and their rebound from the uncertain reported illnesses of the COVID-19 virus that have affected every bowling organization around the globe to some degree. But the association, once known as The National Negro Bowling Association, is up and running once again according to Bergendorf, with Bill Rhodman Classic Tournaments being held in Canton, Michigan, and Smyrna, Tennessee during the past couple of months.

The National Bowling Association is rich in history, as Bergendorf outlines in his article: “TNBA was formed in 1939 as The National Negro Bowling Association, an alternative for blacks that wanted to bowl sanctioned, well run competition. The American Bowling Congress (ABC) and Women’s International Bowling Congress (WIBC) were only open to caucasians at the time. They changed their name to TNBA in 1944 but continued the fight to fully integrate the sport of bowling.”

Mr. Bergendorf goes on to reveal that the mission of TNBA was accomplished in 1951, when the national governing body of ABC opened their doors to all races. It’s interesting to note that since their founding, TNBA has always been open to anyone, a fact that was brought to my attention by James Alston, National Tournament Director for TNBA, during my tenure with AMF Bowling Centers.

Mr. Alston would contact me often, perhaps at the coaxing of fellow AMF director Jack Graziano (an honorary life member of TNBA), to bid on their national tournament. It was a difficult balancing act, because AMF executives were always interested in maintaining the highest price per game in a particular market, but at the same time I realized the value of the tournament when factoring in the food and beverage aspects of the event.

It all came to a fever pitch when John Weber, son of bowling great Dick Weber and AMF’s Bowling Activities Representative for the midwest United States, was interested in hosting TNBA’s national tournament at AMF Dick Weber Lanes in St. Louis. John felt that in order to secure the event he would need to quote a price of 50 cents per game, and that was something that didn’t sit too well with AMF’s senior officials in Westbury.

John decided to get some figures together that would highlight the potential food and beverage revenue from the event, in addition to the lineage revenue. While

it was important for AMF to show the benefits of computerized scoring to increase pricing, John was able to show how it was difficult to take “price per game” to the bank.

Somehow he convinced the AMF hierarchy, and we were successful in securing the tournament. Incidentally, the revenue achieved was well beyond our calculations!

“We surprise everyone with our food and beverage revenues,” states Dewann Clark, President of TNBA. “On average, we generate $1,000,000 in revenue to a local economy per 1,000 attendees.

That’s one of the highest ratios of any national tournament.” Clark, who grew up in Los Angeles and began bowling at Midtown Lanes, now resides in Las Vegas, but the national headquarters for TNBA is in Cincinnati, Ohio.

When our conversation got around to the Bill Rhodman Classic Tournaments, I mentioned some of the previous articles that I had penned about Ted Rebain, Bill Rhodman and the High Five (the most recent was earlier this year, Another Visit With Ted Rebain, in which I outlined Ted’s involvement in helping to break the caucasian only bowling barrier, along with his father, at Detroit’s State Fair Recreation, a 70 lane bowling center with pinboys).

In an article from the Detroit Free Press (February 24, 1990), Ernest Wallace of the Paradise Bowl Old Timers Club remembered Ted Rebain from State Fair Recreation. “Ted and his father were among just a few proprietors who helped open doors. They operated the big Motorbowl tournament at State Fair and invited us to join,” Wallace said.

A group of black investors, headed up by professional boxer Joe Louis, opened the Paradise Bowl in 1942, according to Wallace. “It was really a special place, and became the mecca of black bowlers and the standard by which they measured other bowling centers.” Paradise lasted until 1960, when the roof collapsed during a snowstorm. It was never rebuilt, but remained such a major part of black bowling history in Detroit, that in 1984 Wallace and several others formed the Paradise Bowl Old Timers Club, as stated in the article.

Eddie Page, another veteran bowler from Detroit, remembers Paradise as a special place as well. “It was one of the nicest bowling alleys. The basement had a locker room with showers and everything. And there was a lot of space behind the lanes so that when they had a tournament or exhibition, they could set up bleachers.”

When I asked about Mr. Alston, Clark informed me that he unfortunately passed away last year at the ripe old age of 93. James was a resident of Richardson, Texas,

Rhodman also posted near-the-top with 719 and 1922 in the singles and all events respectfully as well as a 1278 doubles score. Earlier that same year, Rhodman had hung up the all-time all events record in TNBA's National Chammpionships Tournament in Toledo, Ohio with a 1939 and rolled a 300 game. He also posted a 689 series to capture the singles title and completed the sweep when he paired up with team mate Maurice Kilgore to win the doubles event.

PBA Strike Derby Still Did Not Impress

by Dave Williams While everyone should be thankful for what Bowlero and iStar have done for bowling in the past few years (and we are!), the one event that falls short for me is the PBA Strike Derby. Following last year’s inaugural run of the Strike Derby, my comments were not completely favorable as the format seemed to be replacing the quality of shotmaking with quantity of shots.

It’s interesting that here in New Jersey the casual, or open play bowlers, have become more concerned in the past couple of years with the number of rolls of the ball that they can get, rather than their ultimate score, as they continue to roll balls and hit sweeps, and walk down the middle of the lane to retrieve a ball. A deskman at one of the local bowling centers calls it “speed bowling.” Another calls it “bowlers run amok.”

Could the Strike Derby be one of the causes of this new phenomenon? It certainly does resemble the New Jersey “speed bowlers,” complete with bowlers hiding other bowler’s equipment, and rolling balls at different speeds to see if they can somehow will the sweep bar into following their telepathic commands.

Last year Kris Prather impressed me when he commented,

“I really emphasized quality over quantity and it worked to my advantage.” What happened to him this year? He seemed to fall into the same “speed bowling” trap that has captured most of the competitors. However, there were a couple of notable exceptions in the event this year that commented on quality of shotmaking, rather than quantity.

the eventual winner of this year’s $25,000 first prize. Did anyone else notice that the prize money was just casually alluded to near the end of the telecast, and not even mentioned in the PBA news release? It took me about an hour of online research before finding the first place prize of $25,000 even mentioned, on the unofficial wikipedia.org site. Even fans at the bottom of the PBA release were asking about the first place prize; and the overall prize list, because they are tracking Kyle Troup’s assault on earnings of $500,000 in one year.

You could tell that Anderson had actually done his homework and practiced this 2 minute drill in the off season. One of his methods that was most impressive was how he jogged backwards to the ball return, in order to see the reaction of the bowling ball upon the lane and striking the pins. All of the other competitors seemed to be obsessed with releasing the ball, and then immediately turning around and running to the adjoining ball return to throw their next shot.

The other bowler that practiced quality over quantity was Norm Duke, perhaps because of his age rather than any specific game plan. At 57 years of age, Norm appeared to be winded after each round and even commented that he “was spent” at the end of his session with Andrew. “I know when I started, my very first shot (in the second round), I was spent,” said Duke. “My ball was going down there at half speed and I was just struggling.” Duke was also the only one of the group that looked down at the approach to set his feet in a particular position, rather than relying on instinct, as noted by commentator Randy Pedersen.

In an interview on the approach with former Miss USA Kimber-

ly Pressler, Anderson confided that he had been practicing the 2 minute drill and found that the optimal number of throws for him was eighteen, before the quality of his shots was affected. He did seem very much at home during the two minute drill, as though this was something that he had been doing for much of his life… most likely while growing up at the Holly Bowling Lanes in Holly, Michigan.

The Home Run Derby and the Slam Dunk Contest have tweaked their competition over the years and in most instances have made them better. Before the images of “speed bowling” become embedded in beginning bowler’s minds; with machines that cannot spot pins on time, and bowlers that are not concerned with where they position themselves on the approach, the following suggestions are made for next year’s contest: • Maximum of 12 shots in 120 seconds (consider on one lane, rather than two).

• 6 or more strikes in a row = an additional 60 seconds, and an additional 6 shots.

• Round begins when the ball is released from the bowlers hand on the first shot.

Either Colie Edison has been reading my editorials and acting upon my suggestions the past few years, or we are just on the same wave length when it comes to marketing a product, since this writer once held her position when AMF was a significant, but much smaller operator of bowling centers. Now the CEO of the PBA, Colie is in a position to address the changes that have been suggested for next year’s event. The bowling industry, and Bowlero in particular, have come too far, and we certainly do not want to set a “speed bowling” example for new bowlers to emulate.
