draw things. I write stuff. I am a member of the creative class. I am familiar with the bohemian, left-bank lifestyle of painters and poets and other moody types who smoke too much. I make money by making things, and I understand my kind is quite desirable to the leaders of the city. I hear they are working hard to make Des Moines more attractive to people of the creative class. Many ingredients make a jazzy place to live, one with lots of plays and shows and crazy people starting street food carts. The creative class needs cheap places to live, good jobs to keep them fed, galleries and venues and support businesses, By Cat Rocketship for starters. But the cafe is one business especially important to the fledgling scene. Ninety percent of the time, what I need to write or draw is a quiet room with a comfortable chair and, if possible, music to tune out. And I have that pretty covered: My home studio is wellequipped. On a small percentage of work days, however, I need a cafe — a studio can’t do everything. I mean, it is absolutely imperative that once in a while I can leave the house and use the atmosphere and services of a cafe to replenish my creative reserves. Otherwise they get all sticky and gummed up, and when I need to sit down and pour out a fresh piece of work, all that comes out the faucet is a parched, hacking idea. Cafes work particularly well. Working at a bustling shop offers a number of features my studio just doesn’t have. First, coffee shops and diners are full of people. People all over the place. People who look interesting and people who sound interesting and unpredictable people. It is important that I leave home for somewhere populated with interesting people, with whom I can distract

myself when I don’t have any ideas. Also, cafes have coffee. The hot beverage is essential — it is a soothing balm on the slowly rising anxiety of not being alone in my womb of a creative den. Lastly, the cafe contains an essential ingredient, and in Cafes work higher concentrparticularly ations than are well. Workavailable at a mall, ing at a sporting event or bustling any other public venue where I might shop offers a spend an afternoon number of drawing: an audience. Finishing features my studio just a creative work is hard. Doing creative doesn’t have. work in front of an audience is almost as good as having completed a creative work — and a buttload easier! The leisurely pace of a good cafe provides an atmosphere for a variety of people to gather. Inevitably, one or more of the people availing themselves of the cafe will notice the artist. She will ask the artist a question or say, “I like your drawing.” This is important to the cycle of creative work because it reminds the artist that he or she is great. This is hard to remember when one is working alone in a room or with people accustomed to being in the presence of such greatness. Artists are powered by validation and people to show their drawings to, and cafes are brimming with customers of exactly the right stripes: baristas, stoners, hippie families, other artists and the conventionally-employed. Lucky, Des Moinesians are coffeeaddicted, and the caffeine appetites of our student population, startup kids and gangs of young professionals have nurtured a rich collection of mom-andpop coffee and eats shops. As these shops help a growing creative class get its fix, civic planners will feel pretty jazzed.

Q: You listed claypigeon shooting as a favorite activity. Are you a good shot? Yes, as long as it is with the proper gun. I have to be relaxed and comfortable with the people I’m with.

Q: You seem to be a fan of guys with tattoos. What's your favorite spot for a tattoo on a guy? That would have to be chest or a sleeve. Not just a tribal sleeve either. The more detail or creativity really makes or breaks it I think. Shows originality.

Q: You asked if anyone wanted to see Steel Panther with you in Chicago this Friday. Are you still going to the show? I love Steel Panther and wish more people in Iowa knew about them. I have been to a lot of their shows and would love to go to another one. Since it is in Chicago I am not sure I will be able to make it.

For 30 years you’ve been able to cook your own steaks at Iowa Beef Steakhouse, 1201 E. Euclid Ave., but that might not be the case for much longer. Money magazine called Iowa Beef Steakhouse one of the top eight steakhouses in the country, probably because all dinners include baked potato, garlic bread and salad bar. Seriously, someone, buy this place.

See a beloved holiday story

See Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Quidam’

Saturday: Take the family to the musical production of a classic holiday tale, “Miracle on 34th Street.” The story, originally a 1940s movie, tells the story of an elderly gentleman named Kris Kringle, who must leave his cozy digs at the Maplewood Retirement Home because the staff deems him insane for claiming he is Santa Claus. Produced by Troup America Inc. (which has toured for 25 years), the musical features a set, costumes and choreography based on the original story, as well as popular scores like “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You.” 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $38-$50. Hoyt Sherman Place, 1501 Woodland Ave. Go to hoytsherman.org.

Saturday and Sunday: Experience “Quidam,” one of Cirque du Soleil’s most popular shows, which has been touring since 1996. Watch 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and characters perform and tell the story of Zoe, a bored youngster whose parents are distant. Seeking to fill the void of her existence, she slides into her imaginary world — Quidam — where she meets characters that encourage her to free her soul. 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $28-$75. Wells Fargo Arena, 730 Third St. Go to iowaeventscenter.com.

networking Spotlight: Young Nonprofit Professionals Network Michelle Raymer, 28, YNPN Des Moines startup chapter steering committee member Q: You have an event about volunteer recruitment and management on Thursday. How did you decide on this topic? We hold monthly discussions on topics related to nonprofit work and working with youths. Topics come from group discussions about what people are interested in learning more about, and who is available to present. In the past Carmen Lampe Zeitler and Janelle Mueller of Children and Family Urban Ministries shared about their years of experience working with youths, and Amy Croll, executive director at Community!Youth Concepts, shared about starting a nonprofit. Q: Who is this event for? What should attendees expect? This event is open to anyone who is interested in learning more

about volunteer management. Kaylee Williams with Volunteer Local will start the conversation with a short presentation, followed by time for attendees to ask their questions about volunteer management, to be answered by the group. It’s a time to network and learn, with each person bringing his or her own knowledge and experience to the table. We’re always open to suggestions for topics and presenters. Q: YNPN is a startup chapter of the national YNPN. What does the progress of this relatively new group look like now? Things are going well for YNPN as a startup chapter. We’ve held some smaller meetings and events, and have a growing following online. Coming up in January we’ll be hosting a big

Be Better At Everything

Make 3 homemade gifts your host will remember Forgo the proverbial bottle of red wine and give the party host something you made just for them. Lauren Pesta, 29, showed us three crafts that make perfect gifts. — Jess Knight

1.

An exfoliating sugar scrub. Whip up a soothing beauty remedy for a fraction of the cost by mixing together a few ingredients. Pesta said this sugar scrub is perfect for winter dry skin and smells great. To make it, combine about one cup brown sugar, four tablespoons of pumpkin spice, break open four vitamin E capsules (Pesta said buying capsules of vitamin E is cheaper), add a tablespoon or so of coconut oil and about a quarter cup of extra virgin olive oil (enough to combine the ingredients). When you have a consistency you like, put it in a jar and tie with ribbon or twine.

2.

A personalized recipe book. Pesta, like many of us, is obsessed with Pinterest, but said she often forgets about most of the recipes she pins. For friends and family, she makes personalized recipe books with recipes from their Pinterest boards. She finds the recipe and copies it onto craft paper, then decorates each page. The gift is meaningful, useful and fun.

LIVE MUSIC! NO COVER

3.

An easy apron. For friends who love to cook, Pesta likes to make aprons from funky and vintage tea towels. She finds most of her materials at craft stores. To make one, she uses about three yards of cord, rope or ribbon and stitch witchery, a fusible bonding web that will save you a step on sewing. Lay out your tea towel horizontally, center the cord over the back of the tea towel at the top, leaving enough room to fold the tea towel over the cord. Using stitch witchery, adhere the tea towel together around the cord and iron. And since no good cook is in the kitchen without wine, Pesta likes to wrap the apron around a bottle of the friend’s favorite bottle to complete the gift.

Juice 5-Minute Fiction Contest winning story

HOW IT WORKED We set a challenge out to readers: Write a short story, but with a couple challenging details. Stories had to take place in Des Moines, have a maximum of 1,000 words (it takes about five minutes to read that length). The story must have a character named Mike, the mention of a rope within the first 100 words, and somewhere in the story contain this line of dialogue: “This might be the wrong address.” After we received many impressive entries, we passed them on to five judges. Rankings were tallied, and this was the winning story. Read the second-, third- and fourth-place stories online at dmJuice.com.

‘The Post-Apocalypse Itch’ By Jeremy Rubin, 36, of Ankeny

T

hings were getting better between us. No really! They were ... little by little, every day. Then some yahoo from a country we pissed off launched that missile. It was a Saturday and we had been shopping at Merle Hay Mall. Shopping and not watching football, of course. Why on Earth would we want to relax and watch football!?!? Then the air-raid sirens went off. At first, I thought it was Bonnie’s annoying cellphone ringing; she thought it was mine. The next thing we knew we were climbing down a rope to a bomb shelter below JCPenney. Who knew!? Finally, a valid reason worth stepping foot in that dungeon they call a department store. We’ve been down here seven days — I think — eating Wheat Thins and canned mushrooms, talking politics with the only other survivor we knew of, Debra, who before the end of civilization had been a makeup artist in the cosmetics department. Debra ventured out of the shelter on day five, returning with reports of a desolate landscape, gray and lifeless. I joked that it sounded like Bonnie’s sex-drive out there, but this was apparently too soon, for both women opted to glare at me. Debra continued talking about how the entire selection of

merchandise had been turned to dust (THANK GOD!) and the air stung your eyes and burnt your lungs if you were exposed to it for longer than fifteen minutes. She went exploring again yesterday, hoping to find help or other survivors. We have yet to hear a knock signaling her return. Even if the postapocalyptic remains of what used to be Des Moines are full of toxic air and clouds of acid rain, possibly mutated predators looking for anything to eat (like Debra), I can no longer stay locked in this bunker with my wife. If she’s not complaining about how hot it is or how bored she is, she’s bitching about how her phone won’t connect to Facebook. While she stares into the glow of her phone like some stunned nocturnal animal, I’m busy worrying about less dire issues, like the fact that we are OUT OF FOOD! Now, just because my wife annoys the hell out of me, forcing me to ponder life without her numerous times, that doesn’t mean I’m looking to murder her and eat her carcass to survive. “Hey, Zuckerberg, we’re out of food.” She loves it when I call her that. “Huh?” without looking up, oblivious to my mocking. “We need ... to find ... some food.”

“Taco Bell?!?!” “What?” “That new Doritoshelled taco thing they have!! PLEASE??” She’s looking at me like a child asking for candy. She is clueless, so I play along. “We will see if it’s open.” I roll my eyes, turn away from her to open the steel hatch above that leads to the rope and freedom. “Wait,” she says suddenly alert, “you’re wearing that?” The shirt I had been wearing was ripped during the commotion to get to safety so I’d been

sporting a potato sack with arm holes cut out of it from the rations we devoured. “Bonnie, we may be the last two people on Earth, I...” Interrupting and pointing at me, “Yeah, and I’m still not going to be seen with you dressed like that.” “FINE!” As I change back into my tattered shirt, my mind wanders to all of the women I would rather be stuck in this predicament with: the cute Starbuck’s girl whose name I didn’t

know but who knew mine, always smiling and calling me “Mocha Mike” before I ordered my signature drink; Sarah our real estate agent — or, my real estate agent, I guess — who was supposed to show me a small house that I would possibly buy and move into after I left Bonnie but instead drove me to a country road, parked her Range Rover, whispered “this might be the wrong address,” then kissed me so long I forgot where we were; Jenna the

cover story once were also normal people ... people I’d rather be stuck down here with than Bonnie. I climb up on an empty crate to open the hatch. I step back down and gesture to Bonnie, handing her the rope, “Ladies first.” She starts to attempt climbing, but looks more like a helpless fish dangling on the end of a hook. I place my hand in the center of her 42-yearold rump (I can’t bring myself to call that thing an ‘ass’ anymore) and hoist her up as she climbs the rope. Outside the bunker, she struggles from all fours and looks down at me. “I just realized something,” she says catching her breath, standing in dust up to her ankles of what used to be quality women’s attire at affordable prices. I am halfway up, far enough for my head to peak out of the hatch. “What’s that, dear?” “I want you to take me somewhere nice. When’s the last time you did that?” She stands above with her arms crossed, uneager to assist my climb as I had hers. And that’s when I see it, not with my eyes but from between my ears, a vision not of present tense but of the past, maybe the future or both. I envision a beautiful sunrise, butterflies and bunnies, puppy dogs and ice cream, children laughing; a collection of scenes from what my life was or what it could be, but not of what it is now. I “accidentally” slip back down the rope, pulling the hatch closed as I fall. I might miss her, I might not. We might work it out, we might not. But right now, I don’t

Jeremy Rubin, 36 On his start in writing: About four years ago he started writing down things that were humorous or life experiences. He wrote as a kid, but dropped the hobby when he got to college. On picking it up again: “TV got kind of boring — I’m not a big reality show person.” When inspiration for this story hit: His wife left for a run one morning on Saturday. His three daughters (10, 8 and 6) were quiet. He sat down and wrote — about 45 minutes. His wife proofread the story before he turned it in. On his real life: His wife is not like the woman in the story — he’s happily married. On his past work: He self-published a book, “Urgent Care,” in 2011. It’s a collection of essays on home improvement, going to the doctor, and the one time he went to a NASCAR race. “That was more toward a David Sedaris platform. But what I’m writing now is more like comedic fiction.” Where he would go if a missile was headed toward Des Moines: Smokey Row. “My wife and I go there every Sunday when our kids go to Sunday school — we like it there.” His full-time gig: Data analysis for Monsanto agriculture business. In his free time: He’s a hot air balloon pilot.

Sexy lip trend: Rich, oxblood red This hot winter lip color can be worn by almost all complexions, as long as you know how to apply it. Patrick Boltinghouse, makeup extraordinaire and owner of Vanity and Glamour, shows us how. – Jess Knight 1. Start with clean, exfoliated lips. If they need a little TLC, use a little sugar and a high-quality moisturizer – even your facial moisturizer – to gently exfoliate them. A clean toothbrush works well. Boltinghouse said dry lips can create small areas where dark lipstick collects, so buff them smooth. 2. Make sure your skin is finished to balance a lip this dark. Boltinghouse suggests evening out your skin with a powder that’s a shade or two lighter than you usually use. This will make red lips pop even more, and evokes a vintage look, which the trend is inspired by. 3. Using a brown lip pencil, trace around the edges of your lips. The brown shade will help the dark red blend with your skin color, making it more natural looking and less harsh.

4. Fill in your lips with the oxblood red color of your choice. (Boltinghouse used port wine from his own Vanity and Glamour line.) A lip brush will help you create even lines and fill in every last spot, Boltinghouse said, but you can use the makeup straight from the stick, too. 5. Blend the brown lip pencil and the lipstick if necessary. Finish with a little light powder around your lips. For an extra pop: Boltinghouse said the rule of only wearing light eye makeup with dark lip color is old hat. Instead, he said a darker eye will balance the lip. And if you’re feeling really bold, use a black eyeliner pencil to lightly trace around your finished lips, to create strong definition and a more theatrical look that would be perfect for a holiday party.

What I’m Into Chad Cox, 37 Why you should know him: Cox is an author, photographer, storyteller and the organizer of Story Mob, a quarterly storytelling event where anyone is invited to share a five minute story. The story must include a set prop (this month it’s a suitcase), and a panel of local storytellers judges and awards the winner a cash prize. The last good book I read was: “The Space Between” by Kali VanBaale My favorite storyteller is: Maureen Korte The key to a five minute story is: Find the exit ramp as quickly as possible. Rambling is boring. _____ is a site I visit way too often: artbeacondesmoines.com. This site promotes critical discussion on local art and fills a much needed gap in our community. My favorite bookstore is: Beaverdale Books. What a tremendous supporter of local talent. My worst habit is: Working at all hours of the night. Sleep is overrated.

See Cox tell his story by using the LifeInAction app.

On a weekend night you might find me: Reading poetry to my kids before bedtime. A song I haven’t been able to get out of my head lately is: “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men. After a Story Mob, I like to: Head next door to open mic at Open Circus (an open mic by the Des Moines Social Club) from 9 p.m. to midnight Thursdays at Java Joe’s. My hope for the new Des Moines Social Club location is: To see Des Moines Social Club become a premiere art institution that fosters social change and revitalizes the city.

Get To Know . . .

Bringing balance to body and mind Mathew Koder, 26 Why I do what I do: A great teacher once told me that if you have the capability of doing something good for someone or something, not only should you do it, but you have the moral obligation to. The practices of yoga and meditation are essential to the evolution of human consciousness. When taught authentically, it has the power to shift people's awareness from the pursuit of happiness to the expression of joy. I do what I do because my heart tells me this is what I am here for, to help people regain sustainable happiness and peace.

Yoga educator Mathew Koder.

To get away from work I like to: “To get away from” implies an element of dissatisfaction with what you do. For me what I do is what I love and my work as

a teacher never ceases. The skills I have developed most while on the job: The ability to recognize the personality trait behind a person's body type and posture usually instantaneously. Your body is more of a reflection of how you see yourself mentally than your genetics will ever play a role in. Best business motivation book I have read lately and why I liked it: “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle. This is a true gift of a book and can help anyone who reads it begin to live with presence. When you live in the present moment life works with you.

One thing I would change about the Des Moines area: I would like to see more people pick up a yoga and meditation practice, but it is not my place to make a change, it is inside of the individual to change themselves.

percent supportive of me in every decision I have made and allowed me the freedom to make my own choices.

To be taken seriously as a young professional it is important to: Remember that how we do anything is how we do everything. Do each action of your life with quality and presence, from tying your shoe to navigating your career.

I can help you by: Guiding you along a path that will show you that if you bring balance to your body, you bring balance to your mind.

My mentor: I have always looked to my father for guidance and still do. His support and love throughout my life has allowed me to always follow my heart without fear of his disappointment or ridicule. He has been 100

Easton Corbin SPECIAL TO JUICE

Corbin keeps it country JOE LAWLER

joe@dmJuice.com

E

aston Corbin isn’t big on taking time off. He’s playing at 7 Flags Event Center in Clive four days before Christmas, and he’s got shows scheduled up until Sunday. If most of his audience didn’t have other plans (and his crew didn’t want a few days with their families), Corbin would probably keep on playing. “Christmas ain’t until the 25th, so I’m trying to get out there and work as much as possible,” Corbin said during a phone interview. “If I had a bunch of time off, I would get antsy to get back on the road. So we’ll take a little time off, but

not a lot.” Iowa fans last saw Corbin opening for a sold-out The Band Perry show at the Iowa State Fair in August. While the Perry siblings have more of a pop-friendly sound, Corbin is a little more country. In fact, that was the name of his first No. 1 song ( “A Little More Country Than That”). He followed that up with “Roll With It” (both off his 2010 debut “Easton Corbin”). Corbin’s sophomore album, “All Over The Road,” came out in September and features the top 10 hit “Lovin’ You is Fun.” Corbin is cut from a cloth that’s less Taylor Swift and more Merle Haggard, George Jones or Keith Whitley. Whitley is a name casual

country fans will be less familiar with, but the singer was a big influence on Corbin. Whitley had a string of hits in the ‘80s, including “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” “I’m No Stranger to the Rain” and “It Ain’t Nothin’.” Whitley drank himself to death in 1989 at the age of 34. “When you love country and listen to George and Merle and you’re finding that style, you can’t help but stumble over (Whitley’s) music,” Corbin said. “My sister and dad used to listen to that stuff, so I would hear the records when I was a kid. He had a great, timeless voice. I love the way he phrased his songs, it was one of a kind.” For his two albums, Corbin was looking for a similar

timeless sound. He found a formula that worked on “Easton Corbin” and didn’t try to deviate from it too much with “All Over The Road.” Corbin wants his songs to be fun (except when they’re sad), honest and to say something. Corbin doesn’t dislike the poppier side of country, it’s just not what he’s doing. He enjoyed his time with The Band Perry, but he’s also looking forward to going on tour with Blake Shelton (who Corbin referred to as “one of the countriest things out there right now”) in the new year. “Pop is just how people sound. It’s what they do and that’s OK,” Corbin said. “Country’s got a lot of different

Holidays bring Euforquestra home JOE LAWLER joe@dmJuice.com

T

he members of the reggae/jam act Euforquestra moved to Fort Collins, Colo., four years ago, but they remain Iowa boys at heart. The quintet still has a lot of family around Des Moines and Iowa City, so it only makes sense that it would come back to visit over the holidays. And while here, why not play a couple shows. Friday marks the band’s third annual Home for the Holidays concert in Des Moines (it’s also playing one Saturday in Iowa City). The Des Moines show is a benefit for the Food Bank of Iowa. The past two concerts have raised more than $6,000 and 600 pounds of food for the charity. Besides family, the holidays are also a good time to spend with friends. Joining Euforquestra for the Des Moines show will be Mr. Baber’s Neighbors and Bright Giant. Expect to see members of the various groups dropping in and out of each others’ sets Friday night. “We usually try to get people to sit in with us,” guitarist Mike Tallman said. “I used to play in Baber’s for a long time, and they’re still some of my best friends. We’ll probably get Jeff (Blanchard) to sit in for a tune or two. We haven’t worked out any special themed sets or arrangements for holiday tunes, but if you’re paying attention we’ll throw in some teases of Christmas melodies.” Euforquestra has been doing a few themed shows in recent months, specifically performing as a Beck cover band for a series of shows. The idea got its start at the band’s annual multiday summer music festival, Camp Euforia, in Lone Tree, Ia. Since then it’s been playing more and more Beck cover shows, with a focus on songs from “Midnight Vultures,” though Tallman thinks a show last week in Denver was likely the last playing the material. “We’ll probably keep some of the songs in our repertoire, but I don’t know that we’ll keep doing the full tribute,” Tallman said. “We just thought a lot of Beck songs would translate well to our band. There were

Earlier this year the group released its first live album, “Let Us In,” featuring songs from the last three studio albums. The band recorded nine different shows, including stops in Iowa City, Des Moines, Denver and Boulder, but ended up using material from shows in Fort Collins and Davenport for the actual release. “Let Us In” was Euforquestra’s first album in three years, and while it captured what the band is doing live very well, the recording included mostly time-tested songs fans were already familiar with. Tallman thinks the group will be headed into the studio for a proper album in 2013. “We’re all really happy with how the live album turned out, but we’re getting antsy to record another studio album,” Tallman said. “We’re itching to try some stuff out, because we’ve added some new members since we recorded ‘Soup.’ Hopefully it will be sooner, rather than later.” Next year also will mark the 10th annual staging of Camp Euforia, and the band is already making plans for the summer festival. The 2012 edition was the best attended to date, and Euforquestra wants to build on that momentum and keep drawing jam fans to its old stomping ground near Iowa City. “Camp Euforia will definitely be the centerpiece of our year,” Tallman said. “Hopefully we can do a decent amount of touring and keep working to connect with other bands. “Aside from that we’re going to

Fresh, tasty options at New World Cafe

HAIKU

East Village vegan restaurant offers delicious food, even for carnivores. — Sophia Ahmad, Special to Juice The scene: I thought I’d avoid the lunch crowd by arriving at New World Cafe around 2 p.m. on a Saturday. But, it was the first weekend, and the cozy spot, which fits 33, was nearly full. Still, I managed to snag a counter seat by the window.

What I ate: I ordered the ginger lemonade ($4) and watched as an employee made it with fresh ingredients (lemon juice, ginger juice and fresh agave). It was deliciously tart and very refreshing. I tried the green burger ($8.50), crafted from vegetables and green lentils, then topped with a creamy avocado spread,

spinach, raw pickles and sprouts. It had a nice, spicy kick and a meaty texture with a good crunch. I was especially impressed by my side, a kale salad. The greens were topped with dried fruit and smothered in a maple vinaigrette — a delicious dressing with a flavor I had never tasted on a salad before. Who I met: I couldn’t help but notice how much the woman next to me was enjoying the new mac and cheese ($6 for a small, $8 for a large), with macaroni coated in a cashew-based “cheese” sauce. She made several “mmmm” sounds as she savored her final bites. A couple next to me shared the hummus plate ($6) and

The menu: I’m not a vegetarian or a vegan, but I appreciate the cuisine. As I looked at the opening weekend menu, I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to try, since everything looked so appetizing. (Selections from that menu will be integrated into the regular offerings.) Smoothies caught my eye, however, the restaurant could not keep up with the demands of making them that day, I was told.

A large purple turnip logo sign caught my eye as I walked into the sunny space punctuated by yellow accent walls and vintage-style vegetable prints. A pleasant buzz of excited customers filled the restaurant. The staff was helpful and friendly, and the service was very prompt.

Happy Hour

Welcoming start to the night at Sakari Stop by the sushi lounge for $2 drinks and sake bombs, and $4 house rolls — Jess Knight The scene: Sakari isn’t just a place for great sushi and cocktails, it’s a genuine gathering spot — the kind of place you can go when you want to run into someone you know. The scene during happy hour is a perfect example of Sakari’s friendliness and ability to make you feel at home. It’s a sleek spot, with modern, streamlined furnishings and decor, but it’s unpretentious because of the people who go there. The happy hour window is a small one (just 5-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday), but the deals and the atmosphere are enough to draw people in. When we stopped by at 5:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, the bar was lined with people and several tables were already taken.

What we got: We calmed our lateafternoon stomach grumbles with a couple house sushi rolls, which are just $4 during happy hour (most are about $5.50 regularly). My spicy tuna roll was made with fresh tuna and cucumber, and lightly topped with a spicy sauce. It was simple and tasty — a perfectly sized snack that paired well with my draw of Kirin Ichiban, which was only $2. My friend had the shrimp tempura roll, tempura-fried shrimp rolled up inside seaweed with sticky rice and topped with eel sauce. It was crunchy and delicious. She washed down her roll with a $2 bottle of Miller Lite. Other specials: $4 house rolls and $2 draws of Kirin, bottles of domestic beers and sake bombs are the only specials, but they draw a crowd. Worth leaving work early for: Sakari is a small restaurant, so the earlier you arrive, the better seat you’ll get. The bartenders take care of those who belly up by offering frequent sake bombs, making it a great place to kick off a rowdy evening. Anatomy of a drink: Pumpkin spice martini

You can give her a Merrier Christmas! Please give generously to the Red Kettle campaign.

DAVE MURPHY Special to Juice

T

he pumpkin spice martini is a seasonal sipper in the middle of the holiday swing. While the drink certainly taps into the spirit, the taste seems more akin to lazy Saturday mornings and drinking the leftover milk from your cereal than the classic pumpkin pie. Born from the mind of Cattoor’s bartender Frank Rhum, the pumpkin spice martini is one of the new downright indulgent drinks being rolled out at The Ridgemont in Windsor Heights, Cattoor’s on Grand and The Keg Stand in West Des Moines, a trio of bars that share the same management. Pinnacle’s pumpkin pie vodka is a twist on the dessert vodka craze. While the liquor can be drank by itself or on the rocks with its high alcohol and decadent sweetness, it works best when mixed with some of fall and winter’s most well-known favorites: cranberry, apple cider and cinnamon. What makes this particular drink work is that the sweetness of the pumpkin pie flavor is met with its natural sidekick, whipped cream, or at the very least, its closest alcohol equivalent, RumChata. I had the drink at The Ridgemont in Windsor Heights, but it is available at all three of

the local bars. Bartender Lindsey Wathen, 25, starts with a shot of RumChata, the spiced, rum-based creme liqueur, two shots of Pinnacle pumpkin pie vodka and two shots of half and half. The ingredients are shaken together. The concoction is then poured into a chilled martini glass and topped with ground cinnamon. While definitely sweet and certainly noticeable, the pumpkin pie was actually the faintest of

the three flavors. While the cinnamon was somewhat strong, it was mostly the half and half and the cream of the RumChata that dominated — almost like putting a sliver of pumpkin pie directly in a tub of whipped cream. The hint of pumpkin is what makes this a drink wholly different from just your normal RumChata. While not a huge favorite just yet, Wathen mentioned the drink debuted at the recent
