You want your special day to be as unique as you are — and in Des Moines, you don’t have to be tied to a traditional wedding location. There are plenty of picturesque (and interactive) locations to make your special day unforgettable. Some venues not only make you and your other half look great, but they also

encourage your guests to explore Des Moines, connect with each other, and maybe even learn something. Check out these three quirky-cool spots to get hitched: Living History Farms, West End Architectural Salvage and The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates.

Living History Farms Whether you want an indoor or outdoor affair,

the classic agriculture vibe at Living History Farms is perfect for quirky Iowa couples — and there are several facilities to choose from. The Grand Hall in the visitor’s center is airy and open, with exposed beams and skylights — and it opens to a stone courtyard with evergreen trees. The modern William G. Murray Conference Center is good for small celebrations (about 50-75 people), with high ceilings and a balcony

that overlooks a pond. The Church of the Land is a “Prairie Gothic” church with a basement reception area. And the classic Flynn Barn is a historic wooden building constructed in the late 19th century. It features open beams, a white oak floor and large barn-style doors. What’s the wedding vibe: “It is a nice relaxed atmosphere that can be more formal with a few dmJuice.com

decorating to friends and other tasks to her mother. Embrace technology: Langel didn’t have mailed RSVPs. They set up a Google Voice account for guests to call, which is free, and a website. An electronic spreadsheet kept track of who had RSVPed, with no paper to deal with. Brooches and a hot glue gun: This combo can make any look cohesive. Langel used brooches for her dress, her bridesmaids and the flower girl. Hire a day-of coordinator: Doing a lot of things yourself means working with different vendors and not having built-in cleanup help, Danny and Katy Heggen said. Delegating to an organized friend so VIPs can take part in the day is a good idea. Put it on paper: Keeping in contact with multiple vendors is important, as is getting a contract written up, the Heggens said. Katie Langel’s mother created paper balls from old books. JUSTIN SALEM MEYER/SPECIAL TO JUICE

40 Wednesday, June 13, 2012

“Everyone was like, ‘I cannot wait to see what you’ll do for your wedding,’ ” Langel, of West Des Moines, said. So she started planning. One of the first big projects: The invitation. Langel hunkered down over a Fourth of July holiday and compiled 387 slides to create an animated invitation that told the couple’s story, set to music. She searched on Etsy for CD holders and found a maker who could create a holder from cardstock for an invite. A friend created the design for the invitation, which opens like a card to hold the CD and invite info. The DIY invites ended up costing less than $1.50 an invite, even less than she anticipated for traditional invitations. More DIY projects

developed with help from family and friends. The friend who designed her invite also created her cake topper. Next, chalkboard conversation bubbles were created for the photo booth. Then Langel decided she wanted something unique for the program. She spotted a paper-folded fortune online and decided to make one herself. “It was so cheap, it was just a matter of me and my mom going through and folding them all,” Langel said. Baskets held the folded programs at the ceremony for presentation. The next big project: The reception. Langel decided to go without flowers, and instead to carry the blue and bird theme that started with the invites through to the

decor. She found decorative birdcages, two for $24, and made them into centerpieces. Her mother made paper balls from old books, and doves and Dollar Tree candles rounded out the look. “When you walked in, it looked very whimsical,” she said, and it also saved money. She wanted to give painted glasses, like she’s known for, to her guests as favors. They served as table assignments as well, with a drawstring bag inside that indicated their meal, table and a note. Chalkboard spray-painted dollar store frames sat on each table for the table number. It saved Langel money, but going the DIY route gave her the wedding she wanted. “I wanted it to be different — I wanted it to be an experience,” she said. It also helped her bond with her bridesmaids and other friends and family. “I felt like I really had ownership over my wedding by doing it.”

knowledge to do something. “If you don’t know a lot about it, find someone who does,” Katy said. So they enlisted the help of creative friends — people who had the tools to make their DIY dream a reality. People want to help, Danny said. “It just means more,” Katy said. A friend helped edit their stop-action video save the date. Katy’s co-worker Erin Cusack helped design and source the invitations and programs. Instead of a guestbook, guests wrote their names and a piece of advice on the back of shipping tags hung around wine bottle necks. A screenprinted box held the notes, made with help from a friend, Sarah Wolfgang of Urban Posture. Katy’s dad arranged the flowers, which they picked up in a van from Tschetter’s Flowers in Oskaloosa. Old wine bottles also served as vases.

Danny and Katy Heggen Where they got hitched: Ceremony at Simpson Barn, 6169 Northglenn Drive, Johnston. Reception at Zart 1312, 1312 Locust St. When they got married: Aug. 27, 2011 For Danny and Katy Heggen, doing DIY decor was about highlighting what was important. “The most important thing for our wedding day was for it to be ‘us,’ ” Katy said. Katy dug in to research at the start of their ninemonth engagement. They quickly realized the difference between the ability to do something and the working

“We’re lucky that we have a lot of friends with a lot of different skill sets,” Katy said. Music was important to the couple, especially since Danny is a member of the band Seedlings. Friends Ryan Stier of the River Monks, sister Mallory and friend Nick

2012 WEDDING GUIDE friend Andy Cusack was run by friend Scott Gratton at the reception to keep people on the dance floor. At the reception, several cakes took the place of one traditional towering confection. Wine crates from Gateway Market, the caterer, set the cakes on different levels. They’d recommend enlisting help on the wedding day for those planning to go that DIY route so important friends and family can balance helping out and enjoying the wedding day. But good food, good people and good music was the motto for the couple’s wedding, so being able to pick and choose which vendors they wanted to use helped tailor it to what they wanted. “I think it was because we had our hands on everything,” Danny said.

Danny and Katy Heggen used shipping tags in lieu of a guest book. They asked guests to write their names on one side and advice on the other.

One of the things Danny Heggen is most proud of was the playlist at the reception: A mix of familiarity and danceability. JOE CRIMMINGS/PHOTOS SPECIAL TO JUICE

2012 WEDDING GUIDE

Mitchell and Brittany Smith held their reception at Zart in Des Moines.

Mitchell and Brittany Smith Where they got hitched: Ceremony and reception at Zart 1312, 1312 Locust St. When they got married: June 1, 2012 Mitchell and Brittany, both 22, decided they’d forgo cake for a s’mores bar. So they built it. The four-tier pyramid of graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate bars and a toasting station was a hit, they said. “We had people there pretty much all night,” Mitchell said. Other touches of DIY included the s’mores packets for favors. Their mothers tackled table runners, made from burlap and yellow material. The two also built a photo booth for guests that tied in with the

colors and patterns of the wedding. Another fun activity for guests was tying in the table numbers to facts about the couple. Mitchell said people walked around the tables to read the different facts. For the Smiths, going DIY wasn’t about saving money. “If there had been something that we had liked, we may have bought it,” Mitchell said. It was about creating higher quality items for their wedding. There was no pre-made altar for the ceremony at the venue, so the two found a dresser from Goodwill for $30 and painted it the wedding colors. “It served a great purpose and it was cool looking,” Mitchell said.

Embracing tradition

The couple: Samantha, 22, and Scott 24, Gratton SOPHIA AHMAD Special to Juice

Wedding Date: October 2, 2010 Eight Seven Central project manager Samantha Gratton first cast eyes on husbandto-be, Scott Gratton, at a battle of the bands show at Valley Church in West Des Moines. “When I first saw him, he was dancing while playing the piano, and I thought that was very cute,” she said. Turns out that Scott, a jack-of-all-trades musician for Canby and Mint, won her vote in the contest that night. They became friends and dated three years before getting married in the very church where they first met. “We had a lot of similar values, which was important to both of us,” Samantha said.

Proposal Samantha attended a play one night with a friend while Scott secretly decorated her house with lights, candles and flowers. “All of my roommates were out of town, so he left a flower on the door so I’d know something was up and wouldn’t get scared,” she said. When Samantha walked into the house, he plugged in the lights to reveal a CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Samantha knew she wanted a lace dress, but she was a bit indecisive at first. “I wanted to find the right balance between tradition and elegance but still wanted to look like

Wedding date: May 28, 2011 Wedding vows often include the words “in sickness and in health.” Jana Rood and Holy White Hounds drummer Steven Rood had that covered

within a few months of dating. Steven was hospitalized for Crohn’s Disease and Jana developed a digestive disorder that required her to have most of her colon removed. “We’re kind of two peas in a pod with our weird diseases. We became loyal early on,” she said. The couple met through

mutual friends during a concert Steven was playing at Cup O’Kryptonite. It was Jana’s dad who told her to date people with the same qualities she’d want in her future mate. “He (Steven) was the first person that didn’t make me feel like I was wasting my time,” she said.

Proposal Steven and Jana had been dating four years when they realized they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. But, they wanted to tie the knot in style: in Las Vegas with “Elvis” officiating. Their families caught wind of the plans, and the couple was “guilt-tripped” dmJuice.com

In Scottish culture, it’s believed that oaths taken near stone or water cast the promise into that element forever. Steven and Jana held a stone between their hands as they said their vows. For a guy whose wardrobe revolves around two pairs of jeans and four T-shirts, Steven was pretty picky about his tux, Jana said. He chose a black tux with black satin pin stripes, a black button-up shirt and an ivory vest from Weddings By Design. His groomsmen mirrored his look.

Rings Jana can’t wear jewelry at work, so the idea of a huge rock wasn’t for her. Before she passed away, her grandmother gave Jana her wedding ring, a simple gold band with three small diamonds that needed some restoration. Steven had the band replaced with an equally simple silver band. Steven didn’t want anything too shiny, heavy or dark, so his was harder to find. The last place the couple looked was Jared and they found a silver band with mother-of-pearl inlays. Jared, The Galleria of Jewelry, 101 Jordan Creek Parkway, Suite 12560, West Des Moines, 222-5351

The cake, with the exception of the top tier, was fake. Guests indulged in a dessert bar consisting of cheesecake, cake pops, fruit and candy. Treats were made by the couple and friends or purchased in bulk to make sure there was enough.

Neither the bride nor the groom wanted a DJ, so Steven compiled a special playlist that played over the stereo system. It was the perfect mix of modern rock, oldies, dance and show tunes, Jana said. The first dance was to “Baby, I’m Yours” performed by the Arctic Monkeys, which the couple had been planning to dance to even before they were engaged.

Food People’s Court didn’t require a particular caterer, so the couple purchased side dishes like potato salad, fruit, giant pickles and chips at Sam’s Club. They chose Jimmy John’s sandwich shop to cater the main meal. “It was easy, cheap and we didn’t have to order it until the day before,” Jana said. Sam’s Club, 1101 73rd St., 255-2252, samsclub.com
