Olivier Portfolio Product Development

Who am I?

My name is Olivier Deroo, I am 22 years old. I live in Tielt but went to high school in Ghent and finished a master’s degree Product Development in Antwerp. I moved a lot because independence and exploring attracts me. When I’m not behind my desk I love to go outside and explore the world. I am a leader in the boy scouts, a cyclist, a hobby photographer and my greatest passion is skiing. My adventurous attitude returns in my view on design.

Personal projects

Designing is an expression of ourselves and as I am particularly interested in the scientific part of designing the most of my projects are focussed on engineering or human interaction and therefore human sciences. The role a designer plays in the interaction that people have with and around their products is very interesting to me.

Sand casted steel

Coat hanger

For this assignment we had to design a modular furniture piece especially for a specific production method. I chose to design a coat hanger that is produced bij sand casting steel.

An intersection view of the molds and a view on the product as it is removed from the molds before post processing.

Party plate

The instruction for this assignment was to design a party plate specifically for a certain type of food. The plate must be producible with vacuum forming. To test the concept I made a real prototype with a vacuum form mold.

Structural Design

For this assignment we had to improve the structural integrity of a product designed for previous bachelor theses. In my case this product was a photobooth which we had to redesign to a production ready product.

To test the final design I ran a structural simulation to test the strength of my design.

Ergonomic nail clipper for dogs

For this project we had to design a product line of nail clipper for animals with a focus on ergonomics and safety.

We had to create a brand with a specific design language, brand identity, logo and a goal audience. The product line contained different types of nail clippers but they all have the same luxurious design elements. The final design was achieved with the help of sketches and real life models.

Inclusive Design Epilepsy monitor

A lot of products are stigmatising for their users. For example the EEG monitors which are used by epilepsy patients to predict an epilepsy attack. All the available options have a very specific and recognizable design causing a stigmatising effect on their users.

I tried to fix this problem by designing a discrete and sportive EEG monitor so that epilepsy patients can practice adventurous sports again.

Facilitate beach tourism

In summertimes the Belgian beaches are packed with beach clubs and accomodations where the tourists can relax. In wintertimes the beaches are completely desolate. Therefore I designed a seasonal solution for beach tourism for my Bachelor thesis.

On the next page you can find my presentation poster.

A Fender Shaving machine

For a design excersice we had to design everyday objects in the branding of iconic designs.

I had to design a shaving machine with the iconic branding of fender.

Helping out unemployed graduates

This is a tool to help graduated students with an academic degree to find a job. The challenge was to try to understand the problem of finding a job as a graduated student by interviewing the stakeholders. With the knowledge from the interviews we visualised the system of finding jobs and searched intersection points were you could connect with the stakeholders and try to help students find a job they love.

The result is a game to facilitate a conversation between the stakeholders and help the unemployed graduates to find a fitting job.

On campus wayfinding

Students get lost on campus all the time, they can’t find their classrooms and don’t know what is happening on campus. There are a lot of activities but the students can’t find them or simply don’t know they exist.

Trouver is a product service system that helps students find their way on campus. A kiosk is places on campus and in combination with an application and doortags this product helps students to move around on campus.

The qr-code is a link to a video I made which explaines the product.

Animation figure

For this design challenge we had to make a 3D-model of an existing cartoon figure. I chose Theo, the snail from the movie Turbo. This model was created in Siemens NX and was rendered in Keyshot

FAAST-Rivalon

The subject of my master thesis was the full immersive hometrainer. For this thesis I did research on the experience of cycling and how this experience could be simulated on an indoor cycling trainer. The result is an integrated smart bike that includes the virtual air risistance into the variabel risistance that is given by the cycling trainer.

This technology is combined with an immersive user interface that includes the aspects of speed perception into a virtual world. The perception of speed and the integration of air risistance create a dynamic and immersive indoor cycling expericence.
