Though some locals use parts of the land as illegal dumping sites (we’ve found old cars, horse carcasses and plenty of bullets and broken glass) the desert remains unspoiled.

It is alive and unyielding. A place for ants, beetles, jack rabbits, and coyotes alike. At night, the desert transforms into a moonscape. The pale, fine soil awash with the glow of the moon. The stars appear and the sky sparkles with a billion lights. Come morning yet another show awaits.

The sun peaks over the San Bernardino mountains, it washes the mountains in red and yet the moon hangs full and radiant on the horizon. I’ve never seen a sunrise so spectacular here, nor anywhere else.

CANAL DISTRICT | SEA LEVEL SITE PLANNING STUDIO PROGRAM OVERVIEW Our Fall studio, titled Ecological Urban Design, challenged teams to confront sea level rise head on. Our studio program “locked” us in to 10’ of sea level rise (SLR) by 2100 and placed us in disadvantaged communities that would be hardest hit by rising tides. At the left is a regional look at my team’s site the San Rafael Canal District.

Each team was given an SLR “technology” to study its potential implementation and effectiveness.

Our team was tasked with investigating how the Japanese Super Levee might be utilized to help San Rafael adapt.

While planning for future SLR, we were also to plan for increased density in order to offset the cost of the infrastructure.

How do you protect land from SLR and salt water intrusion, while densifying and ultimately protecting such a massive investment from future catastrophe? Can liveable infrastructure be a solution?

The solid yellow shows exisiting wetlands and marshes, while the light yellow area shows the historic wetland area from about 100 years ago. This also happens to match the area sea level rise will reclaim by 2100.

The canal district is a mix of commerical and light industrial buildings with what Marin calls “high density” residential. These are mostly 2-3 story dingbats built in the ‘70s and ‘80s.There is a lack of green space and the highest percentage of underhoused families in all of Marin county.

Our technology to investigate was the Japanese Super Levee, which is currently imployed in Tokyo to prevent catastrophic flooding on the Sumida and Arakawa rivers. What differentiates the super levee from a normal levee is the amount of fill behind the crest. Per the dimensions in Tokyo, the super levee must at least be filled 30 times in length as the height [See Figure 1 above]. Typically banks are 33% graded or shallower. There are three key advantages to using the super levee:

The Canal District is a highly active seismic zone, with numerous faults in relatively close proximity.

Earthquakes will compromise or completely destroy typical levees, but because of the large amount of fill, these SL’s can withstand seismic events without compromising the structure. In addition, the Canal District is mostly constructed on a thick geologic layer of bay mud, which goes 60 ft. below mean sea level, at serious risk of liquefaction.

Typical levees will fail if they are overtopped.

With the super levee, there is no danger from overtopping as the levee will maintain its functionality. The super levee in Tokyo is also graded so that any water from overtopping is first pooled in the stepped terraces before continuing down to the next. In our case, we don’t want the pooling on each terrace and instead want the water to continue to the “bottom” of the site near the freeway.

The other key advantage is the super levee’s capability to be built upon without compromising its integrity. This levee can be punctured with pilons for buildings, utility infrastructure and even trees.

17’ STORM + SLR SCENARIO

CURRENT EDGE CONDITION Much of the canal’s edge is currently inaccessible to the public. Lined with development right up to the water’s edge, the canal essentially serves as a private water playground for the significantly wealthier residents who live adjacent to the creek.

PROPOSED EDGE CONDITION Preparing for sea level rise also allows for a new adapative use of the water’s edge. Instead, a gently sloping grade allows for recreational opportunities and new connections to the Canal District’s new retail core. Reinforced steps provide bank stabilization to accomodate 10’ of sea level rise while the banked slope allows for wave dissapation during storm events.

The Commerical District is unable to adapt to the groundwater rise, so it is dismantled and the rubble is used to help build the area’s super levee. The ground floors of the southern buildings floods, however access is preserved by the buildings connection to the new Terrace Blvd, which is 10’ above the 2016 MSL.

COMMERICAL/ INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT The existing commerical and light industrial fabric is kept along the southern portion of the site. Though as the groundwater rises, their future is uncertain.

The same groundwater will also affect the adjacent communities. It is uncertain how they will respond to the SLR, but most likely they would plug into the Super Levee and continue along the bay edge until it reaches another high point.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW Nestled in the Berkeley Hills, Indian Rock Park is a neighborhood park that is very tightly tucked into the residential fabric.

Our program was to identify site issues and develop a resdesign that provided solutions to the issues we identified.

The park is split into two halves separated by a road and features a massive granite outcrop that has two very prominent histories:

1. OHLONE INDIANS For many years before the Spanish arrived, the Ohlone would gather acorns from the hills and process them using mortar holes in the rock, and others in this area. The hills were a rich resource that was part of the bounty of the east bay.

2. ROCK CLIMBING In the early 20th century, modern rock climbing was invented here at Indian Rock. The variety of routes allowed early climbing pioneers, Dick Leonard and David Brower to create a field climbing guide. Later, Galen Rowell, an outdoor photographer, practiced here and his images of the first successful climb of El Capitan opened the world’s eyes to rock climbing.

Most people tend to use Indian Rock, to picnic, to watch the views, to climb, to socialize.

I visited Indian Rock Park multiple times over hours and hours, but the study above is from a particularly warm Sunday afternoon, a very popular time for the neighborhood park.

Meanwhile, only a few visitors utilize the east side.

Meanwhile, the east side is quite overgrown, shady with an arcing path that awkwardly leads to the ends of the park.

GROUND PLANE | OHLONE Because Indian Rock Park had such a rich history with rock climbing and Ohlone culture, I wanted to marry the two. My parti (above) simplifies this dichotmoy to two planes, the ground plane as Ohlone and the vertical plane as climbing oriented.

Below I list the goals of the redesign and how new elements address the issues.

1. CONNECT THE EAST AND WEST SIDES Circulation is a key issue at this park. I propose a Rock Climbing Loop that serves a connector. The ground planes on both to be planted with Ohlone edibles and useful plants as well as shell pavers reminiscent of decorative Ohlone basket shells.

2. CREATE NEW ROCK CLIMBING OPPORTUNITIES There are multiple types of climbing, but only bouldering is present here. Training stations with ladder boards, hang grips and peg escalator will add new program to the east side. In addition, I propose adding new top-rope stations and carving into Indian Rock to create a whole new set of climbs on the very western end.

3. OPEN UP VIEWS ON EAST SIDE B The highest point in the park is actually on the East Side at B. I imagine this area to be a new overlook area, with carved in rock seating and overgrown vegetation removed.

CLIMBING COVE Neither used for climbing or viewing, carving into Indian Rock would create new opportunities for lead climbing and training. Below the surface would be a gravel pit to collect stormwater runoff for infiltration.

TOP ROPE STATION Many new climbers prefer the safety of top-roping and would make an excellent addition here.

STAGING AREA Provides a more level surface for gear set-up and manuvering when belaying climbers.

GATHERING ROCK Carved into the existing boulder, this space becomes a new area to hang out and catch the views from the highest point in the park.

CLIMBING TRAINING STATIONS Made from the removed Eucalyptus trunks, these stations will provide training opportunities such as hang boards, campus ladders and pole traverses.

OHLONE GARDEN Planted with Ohlone edibles and featuring plants such as Soap Root that the Ohlone used.

CHILDREN’S CLIMBING AND PLAYGROUND Naturally enclosed, this area is a favorite spot for kids to scramble in safety. Clearing brush and adding playground structure as well as a safety surface would formalizes the space.

ACORN WALK The Ohlone relied on seeds and acorns from multiple species of oak trees which would be represented here - White Oak, Coast Live Oak and Black Oak as well as California Walnut.

TULE PONDS Fed by seasonal stormwater runoff, the ponds would serve as dentention basins as well as hosts for one of the Ohlone’s most important plant material - the Tule reeds.

RICHMOND FERRY TERMINAL | 1st YEAR STUDIO The Richmond site has been a historical home to heavy industry, but is now primed for revitalization. Built on bay fill and adjacent to a heavy commercial shipping corridor, our project seeks to imagine its future by combining the site’s existing cultural resources - the Craneway Pavilion and Rosie the Riveter Musuem - with a new ferry terminal that enhances biodiversity and drives civic engagement.

The challenge was to activate the site and combine these elements in such a way that it truly became a destination worth visting, worth spending an entire day exploring. Based on my understanding of the site, three primary factors needed to be addressed: 1. the lack of “common space” between the pavilion and the musuem 2. More intimate access to the water’s edge 3. the expansive flatness of the site which leaves visitors exposed to the elements.

To accomplish this, I proposed the Richmond Cove. A cove that connects existing attractions with new space for programming. A cove that invites recreation and intimate interaction with the ocean. A cove that adds new opportunities to exploration and relaxation.

CRANEWAY PAVILION COMPLEX A historical landmark, the Craneway Pavilion is a relic of the East Bay’s WWII war machine complex.

Today, it’s become a highly coveted event space.

ROSIE THE RIVETER MUSEUM The legend of Rosie the Riveter was born here and her history, the herstory of working women during WWII, is captured at this National Park Site.

PIER AND FERRY TERMINAL The pier reaches out to the path of travel of the proposed ferry, towards San Francisco.

LOWER PROMENADE Situated closer to the water, the lower promenade provides a walkable reprieve from the hustle, bustle of the ferry terminal.

RICHMOND BEACH The ramping walkway and proposed oyster beds protect the cove from wave action allowing for a small beach. A new program that would bring the community together.

OYSTER REEF AND EELGRASS BED The Richmond shore was once a prolific eelgrass and oyster bed. As away to further protect the cove and add new ecological function, I propose seeding a new oyster colony and eelgrass bed in the cove.

LOOKOUT DECKS Smaller scale decks reinforce the colonizing aspect of the design, providing moments for individual reflection and additional area for viewing esp. during Richmonds firework festivals.

TERMINAL DROPOFF The old roundabout is hardly used and is too far (about .5 mile) for convenient pick up and drop off.

Instead I propose a new roundabout closer to the pier for a smoother experience.

AMPHITHEATER AND VISTA POINT A grassy knoll provides an area for picnicing and stroytelling, while the gentle rise provides a new vantage point to enjoy the view of the bay and the terminal below.

Pratt Village is a suburb of Birmingham, AL and is severely underserviced. A tornardo ripped through the town just a few years back and many residents were unable to rebuild. Many of the once occupied parcels now lay empty. The Pratt Library is one of the few buildings that remained and now serves as the area’s storm shelter.

Pratt was awarded a $6 million HUD grant to develop a community center and park that would serve as a community resource and provide reinforced shelter against future tornados. TLS was invited to work with the community to develop the new park and collaborated with the architects to develop a cohesive vision for the new ONE PRATT.

This was one of my favorite projects to work on, first and foremost, because this was a community in need, both from underservicing and for healing. It also was an opportunity to learn about TLS’s community engagement process and how that materialized into a built form. Lastly, the accuracy of the deliverable, a fly-through, would be the determining factor in whether the community believed we got the design right, and ultimately, the greenlight to move to the CD phase.

The project involved a number of steps, first converting trace grading into CAD work; then, into a Rhino surface model.

Finally, into the Lumion engine. This project needed to happen quickly over the course of two weeks and there was constant revisions, to the paths, to the grading and to architecture.

We were constantly flipping between updating the rhino model and reimporting into Lumion. It was exhilirating and successful -- we ultimately received the green light to move forward with the CD development for ONE PRATT.

During my time at TLS, much of it was spent on Boulder Civic Park. The first Phase was approaching 95% CD and finally 100% CD. I updated the construction drawings after they were red lined. I also calculated plant counts with several o.c. spacings. I was responisble for filling out the plant schedules, lighting and tree coordinates as well as documenting the path arcs and chords.

During this time, we also developed many studies and used a lumion model to test plant and tree spacing.

Lumion’s tree’s were not accurate enough so I was tasked with developing 3D Rhino trees for four different tree species.

Below is the resulting model work. The trees were then planted into the Lumion model and rendered as a perspective. See right for the resulting perspective, which was used in the final promotional video for Boulder Civic Park.

I learned a lot from working on this project, but what stood out the most was how TLS used plantings to define space and program. And of course, I learned plenty of CAD and the process of developing a full CD set.

As part of the Boulder Civic Area design, many trees were going to be removed to increase sight lines and for improved security. Many of these trees were overgrown Black Locust. TLS wanted to reincorporated these trees and proposed a custom, cordwood bench covered with coreten steel and wooden planks, harvested from the removed trees. I built a full scale model out of foam core, museum board, chipboard and honeycomb cardboard.

LANDSCAPE AS NARRATIVE | PYRAMID LAKE PAIUTE RESERVATION STUDIO (IN PROGRESS)

REFRAMING THE DESERT My current studio is asking us to look at the semi-arid region of Reno, Nevada and develop our own program that will provide cultural, ecological or economic improvement for the area’s stakeholders. With downtown Reno and the Truckee Canal District as options, my partner and I beelined for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe reservation (PLPT).

We quickly discovered that the tribe’s once rich way of life was destroyed by wave after wave of western expansion. The PLPT and the Paiute Nation remain one of the most resistant tribes in the West, successfully defending their lands against white volunteer calvary and winning decisive battles in the Indian-American Wars.

Still, their lives were unequivocally altered and soon enough they were outmanned and under-resourced to combat the increasing volume of settlers heading west to make it rich in Nevada’s mines.

Their single most important resource was water - both the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake, which was the terminal water body of the water flowing from Tahoe Lake. They relied on the fisheries of Cui-ui and the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT), which existed millions of years ago until today and which set

records for 40lb fish. In 1905, the Derby Dam was completed at the behest of the Bureau of Reclamation and marked the crash of the PLPT fisheries. By the 1970s, the lake water levels plummeted by 92 feet and the LCT became extinct, while the Cui-ui was critically endangered.

By this time, the ill-planned practices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs combined with the Derby Dam meant that the traditional Paiute way of life was at its end. Over the years, the PLPT has won numerous court cases that increased the water flowing to Pyramid Lake as well as the restoration of their native fisheries. Constrastingy, reclaiming and reinvigorating their cultural heritage with the new generations has been much, much slower.

This is when we turned to their myths, their stories that pass on key learnings about their heritage, their creation and imbues the listener with tribal lessons. It is these narratives that have driven our inquiries, as we seek to connect the narratives to the landscape and, in turn, to the Paiutes and outsiders like ourselves.

PAIUTE POW-WOW We were invited by the museum director to attend the tribe’s pow-wow happening nearby at their high school’s gym. Colorful dancers moved to drums and chanting. We were surprised to learn that the music is borrowed and reinvented from other tribes, and that the vocals were not actually in the Paiute language or actually words for that matter. The tribe members are very open, friendly and in constant adaptation.

WATER BABIES MYTH (BY MY STUDIO PARTNER) Paiutes traveling back to the tribe discover that one of their companions has fallen in love with a mermaid, who he took with him during their travels along the coast. They group agrees to let him take her with them, but they discover she has a power— wherecer she goes, water appears. They travel back to the tribe and are outcast. Lake Tahoe is where the group initially slept, their route back to the tribe became the Truckee River and their final settlement after exile becomes Pyramid Lake.

STONE MOTHER MYTH A grieving mother, who separates her fighting children, weeps when she doesn’t see the fire of the separated kids. Her tears stream uncontrollably and gather to form a great lake beneath her. As the days pass, her grief becomes heavier and heavier until she turns to stone.

APPROACH AND ARRIVAL The mother heard about the father and began a journey to his camp. After she saw him, she was frightened but curious.Every night she slept closer and closer to his shelter, until the fifth night when she slept with him and fell in love.

SEPARATION AND DISPERSAL The first born fought constantly with their other children so the father decided to separate them. When they arrived at their new camp, the would light a fire to show their mother they were alright.

DEPARTURE AND ASCENSION After the father separated his children, he told his family that once they were ready, they could join him in the sky.

They would only need to follow the dusty road, the Milky Way.

ANTICIPATION AND DESPAIR The mother desparately waited to see the signals her children were alive. Soon enough she saw the light of the fire from her southern children, but she never saw the light from the north. Contemplating their doom, she began to weep until a great lake formed beneath her- Pyramid Lake

ISOLATION AND CALCIFICATION Left alone, the burden of losing her children grew heavier and heavier every day. Until one day, she waited so long and her burden grew so heavy that she and her basket turned to stone, standing guard as a reminder to the Paiute of the sorrow that fighting can cause.

MSPF | EAVESDROP STUDENT FABRICATION TEAM

FRONT The installation features three speakers with six listening options mapped in black, which includes Sunset Pianos among others.

I was recruited to join the EAVESDROP team from my fellow classmates to aid in the decision-making and construction.

BACK Facing the street side of Market St, it provides panel access to the internal system as well as a fun billboard for passerbys.

The installation was envisioned to connect visitors to the Market Street Prototyping Festival through the act of eavesdropping. Using microphones hidden inside the other prototypes, the project invited listeners to spy on their fellow visitors. EAVESDROP played on the irresistible impulse to listen, while raising questions about surveillance and privacy in the public realm. How does it feel while you secretly listen to the public lives of others? And how do you feel when you realize you are being listened to?

Working with other prototyping teams, we were able to convince six other teams to allow us to bug their installations with microphones, which would feedback into our switchboard. Using coax cables, we imagined listeners could switch to different locations much like switchboard telephone operators of yesterday.

EAVESDROP IN ACTION Pedestrians approach with skepticism, but once given the installation’s concept (and that no one is being recorded) they have fun eavesdropping on stranger’s conversations and the quirky sounds of the other installations.

Overall, it was an intense amount of work to fabricate the structure and work the three-day festival, but it was absolutely worth it. We received the exact reactions we expected: curiosity and uneasiness, with a bit of laughter mixed in.

I saw this photo of an unknown woman captured in the Andes near Cusco and it instantly struck me.

Her gaze. Her deeply fissured face. The juxtaposition of her light hat and saturated clothes. A body that moved forward, but a look that longs for the past. My father holds on dearly to his Peruvian past and it is never very far behind in his thoughts. When he unwrapped this painting, his emotion was instant and total.

Quietness, tears, and a fierce embrace. An emotional journey complete.
