ACROSS-BORDER POLYCENTRICURBANSYSTEM

The Bay of Gibraltar/Algeciras is a cross-border polycentric urban area whose historical and contemporary development is deeply connected to two complex borders: a transcontinental maritime boundary in the Strait of Gibraltar, separating Europe and Africa, and a landborder between Gibraltar (a British Overseas Territory) and Spain.

Today, this intricate cross-border metropolitanregionfaces significant challenges due to a range of interconnected issues. These include the ongoing social and economic impacts of Brexit, the environmental

consequences of extensive industrial and extractive activities on fragile natural ecosystems and communities, and the lack of shared essential services and infrastructure among the municipalities along the Bay. Additionally, the absence of a cohesive public transportation network at both local and regional levels further complicates the situation. All of these challenges are intensified by the lack of a unified planning strategy and an effective cross-border governance framework at the metropolitan level.

Encorages

Encourages self reliance and balanced partnership with other cities.

Complete the fragmented public system, integrate both local and tourismservices.

This area was previously a strategic buffer zone. There are many historic sites and public facilities, but they are not completed as a single system. Therefore suitable for tourismdevelopment.

Maintain external vehicle circulation and enhance north-south and east-west internal connection. Using BRT can benefit convenient tourism activities, as well as the reduction of private cars in the rest of the areas. Encourage residents to use non-motorized methods.

Socio-cultural Space

Revitalize local and tourism activities through linkage with public open spaces.

WHY IS LIVINGINMILANSOEXHAUSTING?

Despite the architectural elegance that shaped the expansion and postwar reconstruction of much of Milan’s urban landscape in the last century, and even though its residential buildings are of a higher standard than those in any other Italian city, as well as recent positive examples, finding happiness in Milan still seems nearly impossible. The city is marked by haste, anxiety, and social inequality, with no sea, no mountains, no squares, and a lack of public spaces.

The transformation of the 1960s Gescal public housing in Quarto Cagnino, Milan, presents an opportunity to address these challenges in a bold and unconventional way.

AFTER TRANSFORMATION

Lack of public activity space

Surrounding the residential buildings is basically a green space above the underground parking, where people cannot do outdoor activities of the existing building.

Lack of connection to the community

Enclosed neighbourhoods that lack connections to roads and surrounding communities.

Overly closed building façade

The enclosed and excessively long façade lacks the necessary transparency and window opening elements, depriving occupants and viewers of the opportunity to engage with the external environment and diminishing the potential for visual openness of the building.

Increase public activity space

The addition of a new block with a roof that, together with the original building, provides a public activity space for the community.

Increase connection to the community

The addition is built at an angle to the original building, opening up towards the side of the road in a welcoming gesture.

The long and uninteresting façade is broken up by the public space on the 4th floor, which hints at the uniqueness of the space and attracts people to it.

Gap in façade

Transforms a part of the existing building into a living space for elderly people.

Subtracts part of the volume in order not to block the view and sunlight of the exisitng building.

Adds corridor and platform with a courtyard connectting the two living spaces then forms a multigenerational living space.

Inserts an elevated open space with an external staircase attracts people to use.

Introduces a volume along the face of the existing building for a living space for young people.

Rotates the new block, embracing to the exisitng abundant vegetation and the city.

Frees up the ground floor space penetrating and accessing open spaces fromtwo sides.

Wet Pour Rubber is a mixture of rubber granules bonded together with a polyurethane resin and laid over existing concrete to provide a continuous rubber surface with no joints or seams. It has a high impact absorption capacity and is ideal for outdoor sports surfaces and can be laid in any shape or pattern and is available in a wide range of colors.

One of the characteristic of the existing building is the “cleanliness” of the elevation, which is composited by the coarse-grained, striped cement plaster and the modular windows. In this case, metal mesh was used with waves for the new facade. It allows cross ventilation and versatile spaces (balcony).

The building is exposed to the surroundings, looks outward and makes the contact with the city, opening to it in a firmand coherent way. We use sharp colour to indicate the open space which allows people can visually identify from far away.

Different from the outer facade, the inner corridor is simple and transparent to emphasize its openness, so that young and old residents can go to the platform for communication and activities.

ALIVINGHERITAGEFOR FUTUREGENERATIONS

The Cicogna-Rampana Foundation is dedicated to safeguarding and revitalizing Villa Damioli, a historical landmark that reflects Palazzolo’s industrial past. Through research, preservation, and adaptive reuse, the foundation seeks to ensure that the villa remains a cultural and educational hub for the community.

By collecting and studying historical records, the project sheds light on the region’s industrial heritage, offering valuable insights into its transformation over time. Engaging young generations is a key objective, fostering creativity and awareness through artistic and educational initiatives.

Beyond conservation, the project aims to make Villa Damioli a vibrant social space, hosting cultural events that enrich the local community. Additionally, comfortable accommodations will welcome visitors, ensuring that the villa continues to serve as a bridge between past and future.

This initiative not only preserves a historical landmark but also breathes new life into it, making it a dynamic center for history, culture, and creativity.

REBIRTHOF CHÂTEL-ARGENT

Where Ancient Stones Whisper New Tales

Competition: Reuse Italy - Reuse the Fortress - Villeneuve

Team: KYUMHaelynn, LI Zhihao, XUZhaoming

Italy

Perched on a rocky terrace overlooking the Aosta Valley, ChâtelArgent, with its silvery stones, stands as a sentinel of time. The “Rebirth of Châtel-Argent” project envisions this ancient fortress as a vibrant refuge where history, nature, and modernity converge. By repurposing the cylindrical tower and chapel, we create a welcoming center fostering a deep connection between people and place.

This project enhances the fortress’s role as a focal point within the Aosta Valley, providing housing, shared bathrooms, and safety features like railings and walking trails. Châtel-Argent becomes a sanctuary for modern souls, bridging past and present in a timeless embrace.

The refuge shelters leverage the natural topography to ensure privacy while preserving scenic views. Polished aluminum panels,

inspired by the silvery hue of the historic stones, reflect the natural environment, blending the shelters seamlessly into the landscape. Slanted roofs respect the site’s characteristics and adapt to natural slopes. Positioned behind the fortress walls, the shelter modules maintain visibility of historic stones while providing essential accommodations. Lightweight steel frames and insulated panels ensure resilience and sustainability, harmonizing with the historic stones to create a sanctuary that merges modernity with history. The enclosed dining hall connects generations and cultures, while the reception area leads visitors through a blend of historical richness and modern comfort.
