Derby Labour, working for you

A message from Lisa Eldret Over the last eight months Labour councillors, candidates and members have been listening to Derby residents to find out what you want for our City. We’ve spoken with hundreds of people on the doorstep, in the city centre and in our communities. We’ve listened to people talk about what they’d like to see change on their street, in their local area and across the city. We’ve shared people’s hopes, fears and aspirations for themselves and future generations. We’ve heard a huge range of issues and priorities from dog fouling, to education standards, to pot holes, to affordable housing. The pledges in our manifesto have been shaped to reflect our conversations, and develop our vision for Derby.

Like you, we want Derby to be a safe, clean and welcoming city, which we can all be proud to live and work in. A vibrant and active city which attracts business investment and is a first class destination for leisure and culture. We want Derby to be a city with great transport links and a commitment to active travel, to reduce emissions and promote health and wellbeing. A city where nobody gets left behind and we work to reduce poverty and inequality. A city where everyone lives in good quality housing, has access to decent work and enjoys a decent standard of living.

Crucially, we want to be a city where our young people get the support they need to have the best possible start in life.

I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to talk to us and share their concerns and ideas.

A safe, clean and welcoming city Key Pledge: Increase the city centre cleaning resources to deliver an eective 7-day a week service

A safe, clean and welcoming city • Increase CCTV and monitoring in the city centre.

• Establish a High Street Helpers team of Police,

councillors and voluntary sector to provide regular support to people in need in the city centre.

• Support the introduction of an all year round Safe

Space in the city centre to support rough sleepers and drug users.

• Identify and advertise businesses in the city and in

district centres willing to open their toilets for public use in return for the Council taking responsibility for cleaning them.

• Introduce a hotline for residents to report fly tipping

across the City and make it easier for residents to report other issues online.

• Introduce free bulky waste collections and increase

the number of compactor days in each ward.

• Ban single use plastic from Council Offices and

events and seek funding to introduce drinking water fountains across the city to reduce plastic use.

A vibrant and active city Key Pledge: Invest in city centre culture and leisure facilities, including a swimming pool

A vibrant and active city • Promote and encourage city centre living initiatives • Work with partners to secure sustainable investment in

the city centre and encourage businesses to relocate to the city centre.

• Identify all empty buildings in the city centre and work

with partners to find innovative ways to bring empty and derelict city centre buildings back into use.

• Support Community Managed Libraries to make them

successful and protect all libraries from closure.

• Ensure that the Pear Tree Carnegie Library building

remains in public use.

A city with great transport links and active travel infrastructure Key Pledge: Invest ÂŁ2 million in our roads and pavements to fix potholes and improve road networks

infrastructure to encourage more active travel.

• Establish an Air Quality Commission with key

stakeholders to develop a comprehensive city-wide approach to improving air quality and reducing emissions.

• Expand the popular e-bike scheme.

• Create a fund to enable communities to address local

problem parking, such as outside schools and parking on pavements and grass verges.

• Work towards becoming a Vision Zero city,

eliminating deaths and serious injuries on Derby’s roads.

• Work towards bringing Derby’s bus network back into

public ownership and develop an integrated bus network across the city.

• Improve and expand Park and Ride facilities.

A city with high living standards and good quality of life Key Pledge: Campaign to make Derby a Living Wage city and support an increase in minimum wage to ÂŁ10 per hour

A city with high living standards and good quality of life • Campaign for secure jobs across the city and an end

to zero hours contracts.

• Encourage employers to introduce ethnic minority

pay gap reporting and develop action plans to tackle inequalities.

• Work with employers and key stakeholders to put in

place measures to reduce the gender pay gap.

• Fund meaningful and ongoing support and advice for

Universal Credit claimants and other services providing support to those in need.

• Ensure that people in financial crisis and debt are able

to access advice and support.

• Promote Credit Unions to reduce the use of payday

lenders and support people to save.

• Campaign to eradicate period poverty.

• Increase Council Tax Support for low income

families.

• Work to tackle the social care crisis.

A city with high quality, aordable housing for all Key Pledge: Introduce a scheme to raise standards in private rented accommodation and tackle rogue landlords

A city with high quality, affordable housing for all • Provide an additional 500 affordable homes to rent,

with a proportion reserved to support rough sleepers into accommodation.

• Campaign to stop landlords discriminating against

Universal Credit claimants.

• Support the establishment of a local not-for-profit

Letting Agency to provide secure tenancies and affordable rents in the private sector.

• Develop a Landlords and Tenants Charter of good

practice in the private rental market.

• Bring more derelict and empty housing back into

use.

A city where our young people get the best possible start in life Key Pledge: Provide every child in reception class in the city with a free Library Card

A city where our young people get the best possible start in life • Scrap plans to cut funding for Special Education

Needs support in schools.

• Establish a city-wide task force to tackle the growing

mental health crisis facing young people.

• Keep all Children’s Centres in the city open.

• Protect and expand the Breakfast Club initiative.

• Protect the Make More Music scheme so that

children can learn to play an instrument at school.

• Work with schools to tackle holiday hunger.
