LEARNING PROGRAMME

To mark the Poppies tour and the Centenary of the First World War, some of Derby’s leading cultural organisations are offering an exciting schools learning programme to engage and inspire your students in the local and national stories of the First World War. DERBY THEATRE - CREATIVE LITERACY WORKSHOPS Animals in the First World War (KS2) A practical workshop exploring the roles of animals, using extracts from Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse to look at the First World War from the perspective of the horses in conflict.

Tommy’s Tales - Life in the Trenches (KS3+) Exploring the life of a WW1 soldier, through active approaches to unlock and help students to connect with the language and poetry of the First World War. Monday 12 – Tuesday 20 June Monday 10 – Wednesday 12 July (selected dates & times) 2 hour workshop £4 per student (max. 30 students per workshop)

DÉDA - DANCE WORKSHOPS: REFLECTIONS AND REMEMBRANCE Reflections through creative movement (KS1-2) A practical workshop exploring feelings and emotions inspired by the First World War commemorations.

Reflections through dance (KS3-4) A practical workshop exploring themes and issues which have been inspired by Derby’s festival of remembrance.

Thursday 15 – Friday 30 June (selected dates & times) 2 hour workshop £4 per student (max. 30 students per workshop)

DERBY MUSEUMS - FIRST WORLD WAR JOURNEYS WW1 Bert and Agatha (KS2) Inspired by actual postcards written by a soldier at the front to his family in Derby, explore the changing lives of men and women during the First World War and the national impact the war had. Optional Make and Take – students will have the opportunity to create their own postcard to take away.

Hands on: Military object handling (KS2+) Learn more about the lives of ordinary soldiers from the past, through our military handling sessions with the Curator of the 9th/12th Royal Lancers Collection.

Available now 90 minute session at £3.75 per student 2 hour session (inc. Make & Take) £4.75 per student (max. 35 students per session)

QUAD - FREE SCHOOLS WW1 FILM SCREENINGS & DIGITAL OFFERS QUAD is offering FREE schools screeenings to see some of the most iconic films about the First World War, including: Asunder: Wednesday 21 June 10am (KS3+ running time: 72 mins) followed by 30 minute Q&A with the film’s director.

All Quiet on the Western Front: Monday 26 June 10am (PG. running time: 129 mins) Derby Remembers Free Digital Trail App: WW1 Derby Monuments & Stories QUAD’s FREE Derby Remembers Trail app for iOS and Android devices will help guide you and your students from The Silk Mill through the streets of Derby, to uncover stories from World War One involving the city and its residents. DERBY LOCAL STUDIES AND FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY – TEACHERS RESOURCE PACK Download a free pack of primary sources which can be used to explore how the First World War affected people in Derby from derby.gov.uk/derbyshistory

DERBY BOOK FESTIVAL – MEET THE AUTHOR An opportunity for Primary Schools in Derby to bring a group of Year 5&6 pupils to meet author Marcia Williams.

Marcia has written two books about the First and Second World Wars: Archie’s War and My Secret War Diary by Flossie Albright.

The dramatic sculptures Poppies: Wave and Weeping Window by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, are currently touring sites in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Previously seen at the Tower Of London as part of the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, Poppies: Weeping Window will be on display from Friday 9 June – Sunday 23 July at The Silk Mill.

To mark the Poppies tour and the Centenary of the First World War, an exciting learning programme has been devised for Primary & Secondary teachers in Derby.

FREE CPD for Primary & Secondary KS2-3 Literacy, Art and History teachers.

We are inviting KS2-3 teachers to participate in a FREE CPD, which will include a guided tour of the Poppies: Weeping Window, a visit to The Silk Mill and a chance to see some of the work produced by Derby’s Cultural Education Partnership.

Classroom strategies using the sculpture for promoting pupil talk Literacy, history and art-focused activities to generate rich writing outcomes Practical lesson plans platform to explore the First World War and local history units A take-away teacher’s pack with a raft of lesson plans across KS2-3 as well as opportunities for linked school visits
