Neurology and Neurosurgery Northwestern Medicine’s Neurology and Neurosurgery specialties provide world class, comprehensive care for injuries and diseases of the brain, spine, peripheral nerves and arteries of the head and neck. Physicians Dimitri Krainc, MD Chair, Department of Neurology Dr. Krainc has been with Northwestern Medicine since 2013. His research in Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, neurogenetics and gene regulation focuses on developing targeted therapies for neurodegenerative disorders. Among his career honors, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine for his groundbreaking discoveries in the area of neurodegenerative disorders.

Maciej S. Lesniak, MD Chair, Department of Neurological Surgery Dr. Lesniak has been with Northwestern Medicine since 2015. His research interests focus on novel targeted therapies for human gliomas, including gene therapy, stem cell biology, immunotherapy and nanotechnology. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. He also received the NCI Outstanding Investigator Award, given to 50 scientists in the U.S. for transformative cancer research.

Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute offers leading-edge cardiac and vascular services, including niche clinical programs for patients with complex diagnoses and disorders such as atrial fibrillation, aortic dissection, high-risk aneurysms and advanced heart failure, as well as valvular heart disease.

The Northwestern Medicine Center for Vascular Disease within Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute was the first cardiovascular center in the nation to be granted Accreditation for Carotid Stenting by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).

The Northwestern Medicine Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program is a designated Pulmonary Hypertension Association “Participating Accredited Center for Comprehensive Care.” It is also one of the few programs in the U.S. that offers pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) and balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in Illinois to offer a comprehensive chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) program, which has completed over 90 pulmonary thromboendarectomies with a 99% 1-year survival rate and a 96% 3-year survival rate.

In 2018, Northwestern Medicine launched the Center for Augmented Intelligence (AI) in Cardiovascular Disease to use AI and machine learning to better study and treat cardiovascular disease.

Physicians Patrick M. McCarthy, MD Executive Director, Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Vice President, Northwestern Medical Group Dr. McCarthy joined Northwestern Medicine in 2004 and launched Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. Under his leadership, Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute has become a national leader in cardiology and heart surgery. He has performed more than 11,000 cardiac surgeries to date, and more than 5,000 of those involved heart valves. Dr. McCarthy invented the Edwards MC3 tricuspid valve repair ring, the most widely used ring for tricuspid repair in the world. He has authored or co-authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications.

Douglas R. Johnston, MD Surgical Director, Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute Chief, Division of Cardiac Surgery, Department of Medicine, Northwestern Medicine Dr. Johnston joined Northwestern Medicine in 2022. He is a nationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve surgery, aortic and endovascular surgery, complex reoperations, pericardial disease and radiation associated cardiac disease. Among his career honors, he received the Edward D. Churchill Fellowship, the American College of Surgeons Resident Research Scholarship and an NIH National Research Service Award for his research in the immunology of heart and lung transplantation.

Charles Davidson, MD Medical Director, Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute Clinical Chief, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Northwestern Medicine Dr. Davidson joined Northwestern Medicine in 1993. He has performed more than 20,000 diagnostic catheterizations, 6,000 percutaneous coronary interventions, and 1,500 transcatheter aortic and mitral valve interventions. He specializes in transcatheter aortic valve replacements, transcatheter valve therapy, coronary angioplasty, stents, cardiac catheterization and heart disease in patients with diabetes.

Dr. Davidson helped launch and lead the highest volume and most experienced transcatheter valve program in Illinois.

He served as research director of the Northwestern Medicine Lung Transplant Program from 2016 to 2018. His research focuses on interstitial lung disease and lung transplantation. Dr. Tomic is well-published on the topics of lung transplantation and pulmonary fibrosis, as well as other interstitial lung diseases.

Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern Medicine Dr. Schaeffer joined Northwestern Medicine in 2016. He is an internationally recognized physicianscientist whose discoveries have advanced the basic scientific understanding of prostate cancer and clinical care pathways. His laboratory is funded by the NIH, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Among his career honors, he is chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Prostate Cancer Guidelines Committee, member of the National Cancer Institute Genitourinary Cancers Steering Committee, and board member for the Society of Urologic Oncology Clinical Trials Consortium.

Robert E. Brannigan, MD Vice Chair of Clinical Urology, Department of Urology Chief of Male Reproductive Medicine and Men's Health in the Department of Urology Dr. Brannigan joined Northwestern Medicine in 1999. His clinical concentration is male reproductive medicine and surgery. He is an expert in performing micro-TESE and increasing the likelihood of fertility preservation in adolescent and adult male patients with cancer. Physicians John E. Pandolfino, MD Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, Northwestern Medicine Dr. Pandolfino joined Northwestern Medicine in 2001. He co-developed the Chicago Classification System for esophageal disorders, which is the standard of care in the U.S. He has been recognized as an international leader in the clinical care of patients with esophageal diseases and gastrointestinal motility disorders related to gastroesophageal reflux and swallowing disorders.

Stephen Hanauer, MD Medical Director, Northwestern Medicine Digestive Disease Institute Dr. Hanauer joined Northwestern Medicine in 2014. He specializes in Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

He received the AGA Fiterman Foundation Joseph B. Kirsner Award in Gastroenterology in 2001 and the Janssen Award for Clinical Excellence in 2004.

A. Aziz Aadam, MD Interventional Gastroenterologist Dr. Aadam joined Northwestern Medicine in 2015. He is an interventional endoscopist who specializes in gastrointestinal oncology, complex pancreas conditions, and biliary disorders. He is an internationally renowned expert in third space endoscopy and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Dr. Aadam is the Director of Interventional Endoscopy and Director of the Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship program.

Physicians Serder Bulun, MD Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Northwestern Medicine Dr. Bulun joined Northwestern Medicine in 2003. His research focuses on estrogen biosynthesis and metabolism in hormone-dependent human diseases, such as breast cancer, endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Basic data from his research led to the introduction of aromatase inhibitors into endometriosis treatment. Widely recognized for pioneering molecular medicine in the field of gynecology, he has published more than 180 scientific articles including reports in top-ranked journals such as the New England Journal Medicine, Nature Medicine and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as several specialty journals in reproductive endocrinology, and is the editor-in-chief of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine.

Mary Ellen Pavone, MD Medical Director, IVF Dr. Pavone joined Northwestern Medicine in 2010. Her clinical interests include infertility, fertility preservation, assisted reproductive technology, minimally invasive surgery (hysteroscopy, laparoscopy), and recurrent pregnancy loss. Her research interests include improving surgical outcomes in patients with infertility, optimizing IVF outcomes, fertility preservation and endometriosis. Among her career honors, she was named one of the Chicago Top Doctors in 2021 by Chicago Magazine.

Interventional Radiology Northwestern Medicine’s Interventional Radiology department is a world leader in performing radioembolization (yttrium-90, or Y90) procedures to treat liver cancer, and its physicians are pioneers in developing and perfecting clinical protocols for this treatment.

Y90 is a safe and highly effective treatment for cancer in the liver that targets tumors with a high dose of radiation without impacting other healthy parts of the body.

The seminal randomized control trial, which established superior outcomes of Y90 compared to traditional Transarterial Chemoemoblization, TACE, treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma, was published based on research conducted at Northwestern Medicine.

Y90 is increasingly used to treat additional conditions including those in the prostate gland.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Therasphere Y90 Glass Microspheres, developed by Dr. Riad Salem, as the standard of treatment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, following a landmark 15-year study with 1,000 patients.

Physician Riad Salem, MD Vice Chair for Image Guided Therapy, Department of Radiology, Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology Dr. Riad Salem has been with Northwestern Medicine since 2003. He is the pioneer of radioembolization (Y90) procedures, and his research led to the development of a joint protocol between transplant and interventional radiology to improve the likelihood of liver transplantation. He received the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation Leader in Innovation Award in 2017.
