Вообще Гоголь питал слабость к женщинам «в теле, в соку». Недостаток дородности был для него весьма крупным изъяном. Он явно разделял вкусы Чичикова и Селифана, которым нравились «девки… белогрудые, белошейные, породистые», у которых походка павлином и коса до пояса. С этой стороны его «увлечение» Александрой Осиповной Смирновой-Россет выглядит вполне логично. Роскошная южная красота этой женщины не могла не тешить эстетический вкус Гоголя. В то же время незаурядный пытливый ум, глубокий интерес к искусству и блестящее остроумие делали ее интересной собеседницей и достойным оппонентом. Их познакомил Жуковский в 1831 году. Она была богата и знатна. В ее родословной Запад переплетался с Востоком. Герцог Ришелье соседствовал с грузинским царем Георгием XIII. Она была фрейлиной матери-императрицы. За ней ухаживал цать. У нее было несколько громких романов. Ей посвящали стихи Жуковский, Пушкин, Лермонтов. Великолепно образованную, умную аристократку неудержимо влекло к этому странному, одинокому, загадочному и, судя по всему, гениальному человеку. Она, знавшая самых блестящих людей России и Европы выделяла своим предпочтением именно этого некрасивого и неловкого человека. Она сама, кстати, дала наилучшее определение их отношений: «Светлая, исключительная, столь редко встречающаяся между мужчиной и женщиной духовная дружба». Со стороны Гоголя дружба эта к тому же была окрашена определенной долей чувственности. Смирнова, безусловно, влекла его как женщина. Впрочем никаких иллюзий на этот счет он не питал. Писатель понимал, что он явно не герой ее романа.
At the same time, Gogol was not in the least insensitive to female beauty. He expressed explicit interest in some parts of the female body in his literary works. This above all concerns breasts and legs. Gogol describes female breasts with exceptional passion: we find in his books “a townswoman throwing herself in her lonely bed with trembling young breasts”, who dreams about “a hussar’s moustache and spurs”, or “a naiad with breasts so enormous, that I suspect that the reader has never seen anything of the sort”. The youthful breasts of Gogol’s female characters are always firm and dome-shaped; they emanate bliss and quiver sensually beneath the blouse. The naked, fair-skinned leg of a young lady-witch in Gogol’s work Viy drives poor old hound-keeper Mikitka crazy. Gogol had a general weakness for women “in their bodily essence.” He perceived lack of corpulence as a fundamental fault. He clearly shared Chichikov’s and Salifan’s taste for “white-breasted, white-necked, pedigree” girls, with a peacock-like gait and braids reaching their waists. Considering Gogol’s penchant for the fair-skinned, well-bred young beauties, one should not be surprised by Gogol’s “fancying” Aleksandra Osipovna Smirnov-Rosset. This woman’s splendid dark beauty could not but delight Gogol’s esthetic taste. At the same time, her exceptionally inquisitive mind, profound interest in art, and marvelous wit made her an interesting conversation partner and a worthy opponent for debate. She was introduced to Gogol by Wasily Zhukovsky in 1831. Aleksandra Osipovna was wealthy and of aristocratic birth. Her genealogy included both Western and Eastern families, both Duc de Richelieu and Giorgi XIII [sic], king of Georgia. She was a lady-in-waiting to the Empress Mother. Even the tsar courted her.

She had several famous love affairs. Zhukovsky, Pushkin, and Lermontov have all dedicated some of their poems to her. And this highly educated, bright, aristocratic lady was uncontrollably attracted to the strange, lonely, mysterious and, as it would seem, brilliant man. This woman, who knew the most eminent personalities of Russia and Europe, chose this ugly and awkward man to honor with her favor. She left behind a most accurate description of their relationship: “A serene, exceptional friendship of spirits, so rarely occurring between a man and a woman.” As far as Gogol was concerned, to a certain degree this friendship was also enriched with romantic feelings. Ms. Smirnov undoubtedly attracted him as a woman. However, Gogol did not harbor any illusions on the subject of their prospects. He understood that he clearly was not the hero of her love story.
