RESOURCES FOR RESIDENTS - RECURSOS PARA RESIDENTES

Montbello FreshLo Hub Ramps Up Community Outreach with New Website By Jeff Howard, Gomez-Howard Group From its inception, the Montbello FreshLo project has involved the community every step of the way. Promotion is underway for what many deem as the most critical component of the build — involving community residents in creating jobs and capitalizing on small business economic opportunities. Groundbreaking for the new seven-story housing and commercial building is still months away. In the meantime, the project team is actively working to ensure Montbello residents and the greater Denver community are well aware of current and future opportunities through a dynamic, interactive, new website: www.freshlodenver.com. “We can’t emphasize enough our commitment to ensuring this community benefits economically from this new fresh produce, affordable housing and retail project,” said Donna Garnett, Montbello organizing committee executive director and FreshLo project director. “We view this project as a gamechanger in how communities can truly benefit in every aspect of an economic development project, from job training, apprenticeships, internships and work contracts to the final completion of the project and its use by the community.” Project organizers continued to put their money where their mouth is when they recently selected Kiewit-Gilmore as the

general contractors for the project. While both companies have done projects in and around Denver, Gilmore is a local community success story. Based in the 80239 zip code since its establishment more than two decades ago, Gilmore Construction has become known in the construction industry for consistently high standards, reliability and for creating the best possible construction experiences and outcomes for its clients. “While we are proud of the reputation forged by working on so many great projects in the Metro Denver area, our dedication to community is at the forefront of all we do,” said Edweena Gilmore, vice president of outreach and engagement for Gilmore Construction. “This project is one of the most important for us because of the positive impact we know it will make on the community now and for generations to come. When it is finally completed, it is our hope that we can all look back and know it was a collective effort lead by the Montbello residents who will benefit.” The notion of residential benefit has been the foundation for the various outreach platforms designed to engage the neighborhood. The new website serves as the primary portal for job opportunities, skills training programs, small business projects, youth engagement internships and initiatives, community feedback links and more. “Residents are beginning to see signage around the community that we hope will encourage a look at what the FreshLo project is all about. We hope it will be a catalyst for more economic devel-

opment led by our residents,” said Denise Burgess, president of FLO Development Services. “The website we have constructed and the digital media outreach we will undertake will give the community a sense of how serious our team is taking local involvement in all phases of the project.” FreshLo Hub components will include: •Grocery store •Retail space •Meeting and cultural community spaces •Affordable housing —97 units atop the grocery store and cultural hub space •Workforce Opportunity The groundbreaking for the FreshLo Hub project is slated for early 2022.
