Face-to-face classes resume after more than two years of Covid-19 lockdown
Words from the comrades
Team Seasmoke ascends to the Iron Throne
Learning with poor literacy is not learning at all.
With the aftermaths of the pandemic-induced school closure becoming more prominent than ever, we glimpse on a much larger scale how the reading skills of the Filipino youth have worsened
According to UNICEF in 2022, over 85 percent of schoolchildren in the Philippines cannot read simple texts at age 10 As this number is too staggering not to plunge, the new DepEd administration needs to invest more in programs that will truly amend the reading proficiency of the Filipino youth and have impacts that can last for a lifetime
In 2018, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) reported that only one out of five Filipino learners aged 15 achieved at least the minimum proficiency level in Overall Reading Literacy For a nation that enjoyed prosaic learning conditions before the Covid-19 pandemic unlike Niger and Burkina Faso, these statistics are irrefutably shocking Furthermore, it demonstrates that the urgent need to address the reading proficiency of the Filipino youth is not a new kid on the block
Adding fuel to the fire, the Duterte regime, which failed miserably to contain Covid-19 and emplaced Philippine schools in one of the world's longest hiatus, has atrophied the reading skills among our youth. According to a recent World Bank report, nine out of 10 Filipino children at late primary age are still struggling to read. The Philippines is one of the countries with the highest
rates of learning poverty in the East Asia-Pacific region the report further revealed
Given the current appalling state of reading proficiency in our country, it is fair to say that allocating more budget for programs that will resolve this matter is the exemplary option. Senator Sherwin Gatchalian and UNICEF are among those who urged the government to invest in such programs While the former called for strengthening reading among the youth, the latter recommended the "RAPID" learning recovery framework: a set of global proposals on resolving the learning losses provoked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The plea of both Gatchalian and UNICEF are not solely bestirred by the fact that Filipino learners' reading proficiency is declining, but as well as by the verity that this problem is making room for more troubles in the education sector. For instance, an American foundation has found that poor reading skills severely impact students’ academic success as well as their emotional and social well-being Hence, to address this issue means to likewise deal with the matters tied to it
The Department of Education has already proposed a knot of intervention plans for the learning crisis. The plan includes profiling and grouping students based on academic needs, extending learning time, conducting summer reading remediation programs, and involving parents and guardians in the learning process. These are easier said than done, however
DepEd's plans will theoretically address the learning losses in the country among which is the declining reading proficiency but will be impractical due to insufficient budget allocation for the education sector and, thus, lacking resources. The low education budgets continue to drive learning poverty down to the very depths.
While DepEd's budget always ranks high among the sectorial fundings, it is still below the standard set by UNESCO Not to mention that most of their proposed programs are nothing but geriatrics and have been adopted before.
DepEd's old, impractical responses add to it the resumption of inperson classes are inadequate solutions to the ever-growing learning crises felt across the country What our students need are programs that will efficiently improve their reading proficiency, along with their other necessary literacy skills To allot sufficient funds for these programs, however, must not remain a phantasm or a plea, yet an action to be taken now.
Now is the time for DepEd to step up their game They need to understand that they have to cultivate the Filipino people's potential, not hinder it from sprouting. They must make reading proficiency a ladder out of poverty, not something pushing us deeper into it
Enduring the prolonged school shutdown, the Filipino youth are left with nothing but wounds DepEd is meant to mend these wounds. They need not add some more
After more than two years of Covid-19 curbs, 960 students returned to HFA on August 1, 2022 as the implementation of in-person classes for the academic year 2022–2023 was approved on the same day.
On July 26, six days prior to the resumption of classes,
HFA staff invited the parents to an orientation which discussed the policies and agenda that are set for the upcoming school year.
As majority of parents coincided to resume in-person classes, teachers began conducting a deep cleaning and sanitation of classrooms and the entire campus.
HFA teacher Vercita Ramos said she was 'very enliven' to co-
Through a 380–116 vote, aspirant and former Vice President Alyza Rae Agustin won the SBO presidency against Solidarity Party's presidential bet, Cythie Jannah Dela Cruz.
In her campaign, Agustin aimed to promote a more peaceful and fun academic year through implementing platforms like Featuring You and Ako Naman Muna.
"Ngayong nagbalik ang face-to-face classes pagkatapos ng dalawang taon, gusto naming iparating na naiintindihan namin 'yong mga estudyante dahil kami rin ay mga estudyante tulad nila," said Agustin emphasizing the objectives of her party's platforms.
Agustin's running team, Empowerment Party, also won
big in the election as it occupied 16 out of the 19 SBO seats
The Visionaries when asked about what she felt toward her party prevailing in the election
Meanwhile, as the election results were released by the school page, Dela Cruz who lost to Agustin expressed her gratitude and congratulations in a Facebook shared post
"Thank you all so much for
mmence her class and conduct her lesson on every course and year level she is assigned to.
"We [made] sure that the teachers as well as the facilities were prepared to accommodate all the students enrolled," Ms. Ramos added emphasizing how the school prepared for the reopening of in-person classes
In the early months of the school year, students and teachers adjusted well to the new
yet old environment and transition of learning styles
HFA pushed for a safetier academic setting by requiring students to wear a face mask, line up for temperature checks, and fill up their health consideration forms
According to tenth-grader Paul Andrew Velilia, he is 'satisfied' with the school safety protocols as these are a great way to not only monitor the students' health on a daily basis but also to respond to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic
"One thing that I would recommend the school to improve would be its health services," Velilia told The Visionaries.
HFA is one out of the closely 90 percent of schools across the Philippines that resumed inperson classes in August.
The prolonged closure of schools has education experts worried that literacy rates among Filipino children which were already poor before the pandemic could worsen.
We [made] sure that the teachers as well as the facilities were prepared to accommodate all the students enrolled.

– MS CYTHIE JANNAH DELAIn the SSC election conducted by HFA on August 18, 2022, aspirants Reymar Enriquez and Aira Franzesca Aguilar of Empowerment Party won by huge margins against their respective opponents.
Based on the results released on the HFA Facebook page, Enriquez bagged the presidency through a 173–94 vote over Realyn Moises while Aguilar triumphed in the vice presidential race by a 184–81 edge against Catherine Dinio
During the campaign period, Enriquez uttered in a video presentation that he would ensure the maintenance of peace and order in the school

In cooperation with the municipal Bureau of Fire Protection to ready the students for certain catastrophes, HFA held an hourlong fire and earthquake drill at the school grounds, August 25, 2022.
BFP official Rogelio
Dimarucot expounded how awareness on severe fires and earthquakes could reduce panics and casualties
Meanwhile, to instruct the students the right procedures to follow during said disasters, BFP officials demonstrated the proper ways to use a fire extinguisher and to duck
Enriquez-Aguilar's running party failed to dominate both HUMSS-11 sections where most of their aspirants garnered less than 10 votes.
However, with the tandem's party leading in most SHS sections particularly in Grade 12 they occupied 10 out of the 13 SSC positions
When asked about what he felt towards his party winning big in the SSC election, Enriquez said, "I feel a mix of sadness and excitement."
"I feel a little bit of sadness because since almost all of us won, there's also a member who lost, them losing is a huge loss for our school," he said
"The part that I am excited is because since 90% of our member won the election, meaning adjusting to a new environment for new members isn't hard since the majority of the members came from my team," twelveth-grader Enriquez added.
In a Facebook post, Enriquez also expressed thanks to everyone who supported their
party.
Enriquez, Aguilar, and other winning officials will swear in on September 14, 2022

MR REYMAR ENRIQUEZIn a club day held on August 18, 2022 at HFA, 67 students affiliated with The Visionaries allowing it to become the most joined organization for the academic year 2022–2023.
According to Ms Cassie Ambrocio, one of the advisers of the said club, the large number is a result of students' likable to develop their skills in both writing and communicating
"At the same time, students want to learn and be educated enough on certain issues inside and outside the school," she added Ms Ambrocio appointed John Denver Pagarigan as editor-in-chief with Frenzy Calaranan, Kyle Dave Tamundong, Alyza Rae Agustin, and Leudin Ia Corre as the associate editors When asked about his plans for the club, eleventh-
grader Pagarigan uttered, "I want the school paper to stick to the common journalism principle: pen is mightier than the sword "
"In our era kung saan mas tinuturing nang journalism ang faux reporting at fake news, I want to encourage the readers to appreciate the real, fearless journalism "
On October 5, Pagarigan posted on Facebook the first online article of The Visionaries a poem for teachers by Lara Mallare entitled, "Pagaspas Paalapaap."
Pagarigan has been a campus journalist for nearly five years starting when he attended a schools press conference in grade school; he competes mainly in sports writing.

Creating a more developed system was the primordial aim of the faculty and staff of HFA in revising the fiveyear-old vision and mission statements of the school at STEM-11's classroom, September 16, 2022
Academic Affairs Vice President Narcy Ador Dionisio pointed out in the opening hours of the program the reasons why a school must have the said statements to observe
Following this, Principal Albert Norte delivered his remarks in which he discussed the factors he would like to include in the new school vision and mission statements
In the meantime, the staff and other attendees had the opportunity to list their insights and desires for the students and the school
According to a parent who is a member of the revision
board, student readiness and awareness of global matters must be taken into consideration
On the same day, the school staff agreed on what the context of the new vision and mission statements would be
Whereas the new vision enclosed the students' holistic formation, empathy, and readiness in life, the new mission emphasized the promotion of catholic education and 21st-century skills

PHOTO COURTESY | MULTIMEDIA ARTS CLUB CAMILLECell phones have become a part of who we are With them, you can do anything. There are several discussions regarding whether or not students should be allowed to bring their phones to school. During the discourse, its pros and cons are assessed Some argue that it may be a distraction; nonetheless, whether you agree or disagree, there are a lot of advantages to students bringing cell phones to school.
Cell phones, according to a statement, are about a lot more than just communication. It might be useful in the classroom
for students to investigate and dive further into a topic It also boosts their confidence in speaking in front of a large group of people because they gain new information that can be applied in their courses For students nowadays, a mobile phone provides numerous levels of learning support While in school, it provides them with access to a comprehensive collection of material on topics of interest to them
A student's access to a mobile phone supplies them with an additional degree of personal security Phones can also be useful in an emergency If the students sense they are in danger, they can contact emergency services for assistance In this sense, a mobile phone may benefit both parents and a child in danger
The presence of cell phones in the learning rooms provides students with a great chance to learn and build
THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS inevitably led to a suspension of college examinations last school year
Now that most universities have reintroduced their College Admission Test (CAT), prospective college students must take exams to be admitted to the university of their choice Entrance exams help institutions select students and assess their suitability for admission These exams are important for universities to evaluate students and their educational background
University exams bring out the potential of every student who wants to pursue their dreams This motivates them to learn and work hard towards their goals, giving them more reasons to improve their knowledge and learning while in high school As noted in an article, students take exams seriously to prove they can succeed in their chosen path Meanwhile, a study found that some students did well on their entrance tests, which predicted their success in their programs Taking college exams can also be a guide to which path you are good at as there are counselors who evaluate examinees' test scores and direct them to the college program that best suits them
life skills that will allow them to control their screen time and balance and regulate the time they spend online. Students are only permitted to use their phones at recess or lunch at school, and this teaches them to find time to disconnect from their phones and focus on their school works
On the other hand, phones can cause disruption in classes Cell phones in class are incredibly disruptive since they disturb the attention of the students throughout the instruction Ringtones, message alerts, and other reminders or vibrations interrupt the whole class and encourage users to to continue using their devices with each new notice. In addition, phones can also be used for cheating; hence, the huge quantity of debates bearing on this topic.
The majority of us can agree that students in the classroom are frequently distracted by cell phones due to their addictive nature The downsides of taking phones to school are considerable However, having a cell phone is essential in modern life It should not be treated like it is a burden
To prevent the drawbacks of bringing mobile phones to school from outweighing the benefits, it is essential to manage the device carefully, monitor student compliance with school rules, and educate them about the value of using their phones wisely and responsibly
“Exams have an important role in the process of learning and the whole educational institution ”
This quote shows that conducting examinations improves our way of adapting to new information from the tests we take With this in mind, college admissions test not only helps students determine which program is a better fit for them, but also supplies them with basic information about the course they wish to take
Some people do not want to take examinations because they think they cannot pass it or they have no means to be admitted to their dream school However, if they are struggling to study for their exams and are losing hope, there are many ways to improve their study habits They can start with sensible time management and be determined to acquire new knowledge for upcoming exams
Entrance exams at various universities are a great help for us to know which program suits us Remember: “Exams have an important role in the process of learning and the whole educational institution “ Let us not ignore its importance, especially now that we are slowly returning to normal
MAY K TO 12 O WALA, WE'RE ALL STARS!
‘Said I’m gonna be a really big star, uh-uh-uh’
Ever heard of that song? It is sung by singer Lauv That line always motivates me to study to dream about holding that college diploma and wearing a toga while smiling for pictures
Recently, it has been going around that the K to 12 curricula is ought to be removed soon, maybe in a few years
Although, despite this controversial news, the K to 12 curricula is being reviewed with the presence of Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte
To be frank, in this modern world, education without the K to 12 system would be much harder and more complicated For the past 11 years, the two-year program has served as preparation and more hands-on learning for students before entering college
The financial ability of children and their parents to sustain them through two more years of school is the main disadvantage of the K to 12 system here in our country, it also puts pressure on Filipino teachers, particularly in public schools
While some think that it is just a waste of time, it is essential for developing skills and acquiring knowledge that the 21st century requires This two-year program engages in practices to produce citizens who are life-ready and socially accountable
QUESTION
In November 2022, the Department of Education issued Department Order No 49 where teachers were told to avoid relationships, interaction, communication, including following social media with learners outside of the school setting, except if they are relatives What are your thoughts on this?
I agree with DepEd's decision to tell teachers to avoid interactions with students outside the school I think that it is important for teachers to maintain a professional relationship with their students and not become friends with them It is also necessary for students to focus well Becoming friends with students can lead to favoritism and other problems
I disagree with Department Order No 49 because I think it's made out of crack reasons School personnels show professionalism and I can prove that They have been hanging out with their students in public places or having conversations with them on social media, but still they work poised and at a hundred focus when they are in the classroom
“We will make the curriculum relevant to produce competent, job-ready, active, and responsible citizens,” said Duterte Aiming to be accessible for selfdevelopment education through participants' potential skills, the program also focuses on learning competencies
On the other hand, the absence of the curriculum is a huge drawback for students, particularly those who want to work abroad It would not be a good idea to skip this learning system, as it prepares us to be ready for our future jobs
Back in 2016 when Aquino said, “The credentials of our countrymen working overseas are already being questioned” because they lack K to 12 education With the help of K to 12 in regards to employment, it is a door to job opportunities internationally
The cornerstone of a student's academic career is their K–12 education It offers the fundamental information and abilities required for success in school and the workplace Moreover, it is crucial for creating responsible adults and preparing children for the challenges of adulthood
Yes, it is an additional two-year program and requires more money, but wouldn’t it be worth it for a bright and better future? Plus, I have my ultimate fave song that pushes me to study and scribble Taste the moment before it’s done, you should know I’ma be a really big star
I am against that order because kung pangalawang magulang natin ang mga guro, bakit nila pipigilan na magkaroon ng interaction between the teachers and students? Hindi ba't maaapakan nito ang right for emotional expression?

The lively screams of the locals that echoed within the streets of the town of Quezon penetrated my ears. The vendors I saw standing by their alluring stalls captivated my eyes. The fragrant aroma of the Nazarene oil directly pierced my nostrils and caught my attention Suddenly, every single thing began to shake up my bodily senses and in the middle of nowhere, I was reminded of the Black Nazarene's first visit to our parish. However, neither was I hallucinating nor did I travel back to 2020. That was real the Black Nazarene was back in our town!
In the second and third weeks of October, the once-pale town of Quezon turned into a place shining in different hues of maroon as the replica of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo spent five days at the Holy Family Parish. Thanks to the church staff, the locals were able to glimpse
again this statue of Jesus wearing a maroon robe while carrying a cross on His shoulders.
This replica visited the parish for the first time in 2020 With its comeback this year, the hope of the devotees and the memories I had from its first visit also came back in an instant The all-day busy streets, the burgundy shirts and printed bandanas, the Hijos De Nazareno, and everything that we missed... we met them again
In just the first three hours of the replica's stay, the hospitality and the devotion of the locals were already evident. Nothing not even the blistering heat was potent enough to cease them from welcoming it. Singing deafeningly the song, "Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno" and swinging the replica until it would reach its precious site were only few of the many efforts they made for it
However, as I was perceiving all that the locals were doing for this mere piece of wood, the question as to what makes them so spirited to it started to squash in my head Miracles
Perhaps the eagerness for miracles is a reason for their matchless devotion As there are many testimonies of fortune, curing of a disease, and salvation attributed to the Black Nazarene, most Filipinos strengthen their faith in it hoping that they would also be brought off with a miracle in their life
his sacrifice when he wandered barefoot while carrying the cross to Calvary the cross to where he was nailed
As the queue where I lined up approached the replica, there emerged my confusion as to what I should pray or ask for it. Like withered leaves, my hands were shuddering before I even touched it. It was the feeling of jubilance, perchance, that caused them to tremble Also, it was from that point that I finally wised up to what makes millions of people so devoted to the Black Nazarene.
Eagerness for miracles. Repayment for His sacrifices Personal intentions. And whatnot.
We all have different reasons why the Black Nazarene is exceptional to us; yet, there is a lone notion that unites us all the Black Nazarene is our source of hope. Its revisit in our parish pigmented our achromatic lives maroon.
My innocent self used to reckon that maroon only signified the blood of Christ pouring through His garments while hauling the cross to Calvary. Howbeit, as both of my eyes caught sight of the strong devotion of our locals, I believe this splendid color is also now an epitome of faith, hope, and passion.
We are grateful for being #PaintedMaroon We will wait until your next coming, Black Nazarene.
Viva Poong Hesus Nazareno! Viva!Yet, not everyone is a devotee due to a desire for miracles. Some turned into a devotee to pay off Christ for
An array of candles that was laid out in the shape of the holy rosary emblazed the already-luminous gymnasium. A cluster of prayers was narrated over and over while a familiar hymn was playing in the background. It's October once again.
Every last week of the said month, HFA observes the living rosary It was my third time experiencing it, and I expected the usual Yet, this time, I found myself fancying the moment while harkening to the statement for each of the five sorrowful mysteries
The lectors spoke in their sweet voices that I gave my entire concentration on their readings As I came home, I just couldn't resist but search for the meaning behind each mystery of sorrows That was when I knew the third time was different Here's what I found out
The Garden of Gethsemane is a place of Christ’s agony and our gateway into life. As the Son of God, Jesus was confident of getting through His death. But as the Son of Man, He was bound to fulfill His destiny as the savior of the world.
In our place of agony where we suffer from anxiety, depression, pressure, and being left out, Jesus is always with us. The best thing we can do is to trust him that through His help, we can overcome any trials.
Second Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging of Jesus at the Pillar
is like to be physically scourged. However, we can all endeavor to picture how agonizing it must have been for Jesus. He was repeatedly and ruthlessly scourged while bound to a pillar. As His flesh was whipped, we have no idea of how many injuries He sustained. Even before He carried His cross, we are clueless about how much blood He lost.
Have we not felt emotionally belittled by the people around us? Perhaps there were instances when we heard unfavorable remarks which harmed our emotions. Or maybe there were junctures where we were blamed for something we never did. We must always remember that even though we may feel helpless, with God's help, we can still overcome our challenges.
Third Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns
As Christians, how often have you felt condemned before even saying a word? How many times have individuals in positions of authority viewed you as an outcast?
Being crowned with thorns entails more than the physical anguish of thorns piercing one's head It is to be humiliated It is to be mocked by people who have no idea of what you are going through
People desire to feel in command as if they have influence over others To accomplish this, they may attempt to put others down and harm anyone who is in their path
Nonetheless, in God's view, it is not the prideful who will be honored The Lord can be pleased by a humble man
Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: The
Let's not forget the way Jesus carried the cross Jesus did not deserve to be punished; He never did anything wrong He simply helped others gave sight to the blind, fed the hungry, cured the sick, and resurrected the dead Jesus freely abode His cross for us, for love
Remember that no matter how heavy the cross is behind your back, you never walk alone Your cross is carried by God Knowing what we could never bear on our own, He bore our burdens long before we were born
Fifth Sorrowful Mystery: The Crucifixion and Death
Jesus was nailed to the Cross and agonized for three long hours praying for His executioners. While He died for the sake of humanity, He promised heaven to the repentant thief and gave us His mother, Mary.
Jesus desires that we maintain our hand in Mary. He asks us to look to and rely on our heavenly mother and accept her as our true mother.
Participating in the living rosary is never a waste of time Although it has come to a close, I am reminded of one thing I should continue to pray the rosary and summon the blessings of the Blessed Mother to strengthen the Christian faith and allow God to enter my heart
Jeremy Zucker is a producer and up-and-coming indie pop musician who first achieved popularity as a member of the band 3OAK On May 4, 2018, he released his debut EP, entitled "glisten "
Off that EP, the song "All The Kids Are Depressed" aims to confront the truth that many people experience depression and that the current generation of children appears to be the first to engage in a conversation about mental health This song is a tribute to them and the idea that we all encounter daily problems that call for assistance
It's difficult to define the song itself, like depression It has
BY | NIDAINE NATALIE VALDEZI have chased the ambrosial aroma. The dense smoke billowing into the air is a view of a panorama. Hotdogs, isaws, squids, and such are tasty to eat, as well as the pork barbeque with its freshest meat. Along the simplest elements of oil, salt, and pepper, the flesh is metamorphosed into a luscious savor for everyone's mouth to devour. Everyone is getting along at this hour, dinner is evidently at due. My stomach is growling, looking for a clue. No one hesitates to lit up the fire and conquer, it's a feast for us to share.
Happy 65th founding anniversary, Holy Family Academy! In light of the continuation of face-to-face classes, our school had inaugurated an impeccable program celebrated annually, entitled "Parilla Festival " Held on the school grounds, this year's fest has witnessed the special participation of the ACES superintendent with its whole organi-
both quiet and solemn moments and joyous and exuberant ones This dynamic effectively mimics the depressive state by demonstrating that there are ups and downs, as opposed to perpetual sadness, as many portrayals of melancholy would have you think In addition to complementing the song's tune and tone, Zucker's vocals are sympathetic and convey a calming depth of feeling
The music video is made to look like a short film and tells the tales of people struggling with depression by combining high-quality and grainy home video footage When he posted the casting call for this movie requesting people to share their struggles with depression, Zucker says in the intro that he had no idea what to expect He is standing by himself in the street He claims to have received hundreds of letters and messages from people detailing their most private and sensitive issues
While the song is playing, the video continues by sharing some of these stories through subtitles at the bottom of the screen Each tale is as unique as the people telling it. Yet they all revolve around the ongoing struggle each person has with depression One girl describes how her mother's second marriage caused her to lose all faith and how her father passed away on September 11, 2001, the day the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil occurred, when she was just five years old She and a few of the other folks in the music video are wearing Chuck Taylors, but their tales are what viewers should focus on They are the proper focus, and they are all equally important in showing other individuals enduring depression that it is possible to live a life full of joy and happiness
Find someone you can always lean on if you have depression. Feel alright, stay up 'til sunrise
zation giving tremendous support for the upcoming years of the institution
It has been two years since the awakening of the strenuous plight aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic It was a blast to experience such programs like this again I am deeply enraptured and overwhelmed that all I can say is that I am thankful for the experience It is indeed a reprieve from my daily grind
Furthermore, Parilla Festival is celebrated with huge enthusiasm, vivacity, and harmony in an extravagant, eye-catching atmosphere that everyone enjoys and delights Since we are becoming more progressively modernized and ameliorated, we are running out of time for leisure pursuits However, this celebration is an excellent excuse to terminate the monotony of school work, allocate some quality time with our family and friends, hang out with
different types of people of different features, and is ideal to freshen or rejuvenate our minds up
My gratitude knew no bounds as I fully romanticized and cherished my last high school days together with my remarkable classmates and educators with love, blithe and joyful feastings Oh Parilla what a
As students, can we help our planet grow and recover?
The heavens blurted out their tragic bereavement as the air is filled with the scolding haze of treacherous smog. The Earth's land is utterly polluted, indisputably stained with filthiness. The waters are occupied with countless debris that barricades the magnificent stream of life. Indeed, humanity can be so arrogant and ostensibly careless. But would we be given second chances? With the heritage we lost, how can we go back to the beginning with a diversity of natural resources? Does our school itself point the way?
HFA has deliberated a well-conceived plan of action to encourage all its students to generate a change. The school believes that even minor advancements in our daily habits can significantly impact our world. With the help of every student, we can inaugurate such environmental initiatives as collecting plastic bottles and segregating unwanted waste.
I see on my left a yellow trash bin. On my right is a green one Only a red one is missing to complete the colors of the traffic lights
Though as hilarious as it sounds, those yellow and green garbage bins
you see at every corner of HFA impose a huge impact on the environment They do not follow color coding for artistic purposes It is to guide students in separating their waste
Whereas the yellow trash bins are made for the non-biodegradables, the green ones are room for the biodegradables And soon, the red ones may as well come into existence
Waste segregation is carried out in the school to pile up garbage separately Biodegradable waste can be broken down through composting to catalyze rich fertile soil for plants Non-biodegradable waste, on the other hand, can be harnessed for recycling Apart from that, this waste segregation also helps in reducing health issues that can arise from improperly disposed waste and toxins Since the Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet, waste segregation may be very beneficial at this time
As caretakers of the environment, it is one of our top priorities to use this segregation technique to pave the way for a more pristine, better environment by circumventing its pollution level to an enormous extent
After the hazardous effects aggravated by all that harmful pollution, recycling has become known to humanity and has become more salient
Every Friday, students hand over their collected plastic bottles to the campus to produce plastic armchairs for public schools Through these practices, we can maximize the potential of used products to bring good tidings to the vulnerable
The more we recycle, the less garbage will land in our landfills, improving the terrestrial sphere Re-
using materials such as paper and plastic can hinder energy costs and the adverse effects that material production and processing have on the ecosystem
Have you seen the life-size belens made by the students themselves? Who would have thought that they are mainly created with reused and recycled materials? Yes, you heard that right! These belen artworks depict the nativity of Christ in an ingenious, eco-friendly way.
Students used a variety of discarded organic materials like wood, hay, cotton from old pillows, bamboo, coconut shells, and palm leaves to form the decorations for their belens. They also used discarded synthetic materials such as CDs, bottles, plastic cups, plastic spoons, cardboard, and pages from books. Truly, their creativity and resourcefulness are on another level!
The initiatives of the students must never be disparaged for however micro they are, they still inflict a macro aftermath on the environment. The world is still ruled by actions over words, by quality over quantity. That shall not change ever -more.
Thus,
has been answered. As students, we can help our planet grow... and recover.
the question
When one departs life, almost everything about him perishes likewise. But what he has taught the world stays. And in twilights, it continues to ray.
The whole academe is yet to cease its mourning over the loss of its student, Ken Ashley R. Cabalar. His very brief yet very wonderful existence is one of a kind stories. And like all other stories, it left us with the greatest lessons those that shall shine on through the obscurities of life.
In this segment, two of Ken's comrades pondered on the question,
thing Ken has taught you?"
To continue chasing for your dreams no matter the number of obstacles that may come in your way.
To love and to be loved.
Greatest niya sigurong naituro sa akin is 'yun to love and be loved as a person He made me realized that loving someone that didn't express is a wrong act of love and losing a wealth, and that in love, all things are involved Nawala man siya, ang pag-ibig na nagmula sa kanya'y mananatili
If he would ask me using that line from his favorite song, Wonderful Tonight:
"And then [he] asks me, Do you feel all right?"
I'd say yes, I feel wonderful tonight Ayos Komplikado Malungkot Pero masaya Masaya na naging parte at naging kapatid ka namin abayin, PLT Ken Ashley R Cabalar
BY | ALYZA RAE AGUSTINIt was a busy time for us students; the first quarter just ended and the second quarter followed. There are a lot of things going on; thus, when the teacher announced that there would be a belen-making competition, excitement was not the main thing I felt At that time, for me, it was just another work we must do, another task we must accomplish When the theme for the contest was enunciated as “Belen ng Pag-asa”, I never fully understood the reason behind it. But upon looking back and remembering the journey of making it, everything made more sense Indeed, God’s timing is always right. Indeed, Belen gave us hope and more than that “Belen” is a traditional Filipino Christmas symbol. It is a tableau depicting the nativity scene of Jesus Christ. Normally, it is a manger surrounded by the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, the shepherds, their flock, the Three Kings, and some animals and angels. It is usually seen in churches, buildings, and homes, but this year, it came in the form of a competition at HFA and became the light of Paskuhan on December 15.
As soon as you step through the school gate, the captivating view of the five life-size belens will welcome you. Created by different groups, each belen shined appealingly in its colors, artistic forms, and creative materials such as spoons, coconut shells, CDs, and bamboo! Its artistic finish did not make it look like it was made by students.
When it was time to judge, the belens' Christmas lights were lit up. Later, the winners were announced The cheers were so deafening, it made me think it could be because those are the screams after everything that happened before we came to this point. All the sacrifices of going home late at night and working on Saturdays were done and we made it All of this we are part of it.
Recalling it comes the realization of how excellent the timing is. This came during a tough time Upon making it, we encountered difficulties, but we persisted We trusted the process. We held on when reality was making it seem impossible. We hoped. Perhaps that’s the spirit of Belenismo in HFA giving hope amidst the span of despair

As of writing, the original music video for Katherine Lynn-Rose's hit track, "Top of My School" has received 2.5 million views on YouTube while its audio racked up over 9 million streams on Spotify. This song is about a female student who is strongly driven by achievement and determination in her studies to not disappoint her peers. Like the title itself, she is the top of her school.
Top of My School was officially released on February 20, 2021, with piano arrangements by Joshua Turchin. The song is classified as a musical theatre song since an ensemble is seen singing in the music video and can be heard on the track. Behind its upbeat rhythm and melody lies a dreary, realistic depiction of what students experienced during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
"I’ll go all out
Ace еvery test
No doubt
Outdo all the rest
Don’t pout
Or settle for second best"
This stanza is a statement of students' determination and perseverance just to make their parents and friends proud. With extreme optimism and ambition, they don't even have a place for second best. It's always the first spot they settle for
"Maybe my friends will say I’m overzealous
Maybe I try too hard
(Maybe she tries too hard)"
Everything has its limits, including academics It is never considered good if we pour too much into anything.
On October 2021, the same year
this song was released, Severe Tropical Storm Maring hit the northern portion of the Philippines. As school obligations grew too onerous in the wake of the pandemic and the said tropical storm, student groups in Baguio City urged the local government to declare an academic break. The SLU Supreme Student Council stated that reports of suicide among the students ensued due to the aftermath of recent devastating events at the time. Thus, to meet the students’ academic and nonacademic needs, the SLU Administration reached out to the local government for immediate notice of the unfortunate situation
"But if I hadn’t earned a dollar What would you think of your dear daughter? Would it be pity or dishonor
To ensue?
And if I failed to earn blue ribbon How could I ever be forgiven?"
This section of the song illustrates how a student's performance and daily life are significantly affected by peer pressure Unfortunately, one's fear of being rejected and disappointed by oneself or one's peers may also be the root of this.
"And who’ll love me if I’m not the top of my school?"
This mere line comes with a lot of stress and pressure whereas the entire verse describes how young people overwork themselves and try
too hard to be the best as their peers’ mindsets are blinded by overwhelmingly high standards and pride
Fortunately, this song became a hit due to its dark, sad, but realistic depiction of a student’s life in the real world. Also, the majority of its listeners are students who felt appreciated and validated that they share the same feelings as the idea of the song. They can relate to Katherine on this one! Her other songs like ‘Price of Perfection’ and ‘In the clouds’ have also gained attention for their relatable but depressing illustration of society, especially in the modern era.
In addition to the captivating vocals of the individuals involved in the song's creation, the words ‘Top of My School’ also contributes to the song's excellence. Although not all of the drawbacks of the academic community are covered, enough of them are addressed It successfully identifies the issue and offers a solution to it
The message of ‘Top of My School’ is intrinsically basic and uncomplicated to understand thanks to its directness and intelligent use of actual occurrences It also leaves room for listeners to share the same notion as the song It is to say that ‘Top of My School’ deserves the attention it is getting in the present
Everyone is aware of the obvious and contentious topic at hand, but no one wants to bring it up or engage in a discussion about it since doing so can be uncomfortable and is personally, socially, or politically
embarrassing, controversial, or precarious. The song serves as a message to set our minds and take action to cease this unfortunate circumstance
BY | LEUDIN IA CORREAt the announcement of HFA Intramurals 2023 winners on January 27, Team Seasmoke was proclaimed the overall champion after bagging a total of 1,609 points.
Despite failing to snatch the main awards Team Dance Competition, Best in Jersey Presentation, and Mr and Ms Holy Family Academy 2023 Team Seasmoke proved the intramurals are still about sports after being hailed as the champion, besting four other teams
The team is 23 points higher than Team Caraxes, the first runner-up, followed by second runner-up Team Sunfyre, third runner-up Team Vermithor, and fourth runner-up
Team SyraxFor the fifth time to theme its annual intramurals with a certain TV show, HFA through the decision of Student Activity Coordinator Riz Dianne Villaflor picked the HBO hit series House of the Dragon.
Five of the dragons from the show Syrax, Sunfyre, Vermithor, Seasmoke, and Ca-
raxes were used as names for the opposing intramurals team.
The Student Activity coordinator also decided on matching the school's stage design with the hit series, placing in the center of the stage a student-made iron throne.
In 2017, HFA themed its intramurals with House of the Dragon's sequel, Game of Thrones.
Aside from conducting games designed to develop students' physical and mental skills, HFA's five-day intramurals starting on January 23 also featured fresh and relishing portions, among which were the fireball and the color run
Arranged by Rod Adrian Villaflor and other tenthgraders, the fireball was introduced on the first day of the intramurals as a new way to
Although not a new portion, the color run, which has been in preparation since the year-end break, was also eagerly awaited at this year's intramurals
Outsiders were authorized to participate in the said portion conducted on Day 5
Other features of Intramurals 2023 include team dance competition, exhibition games, and jersey presentation
Team Seasmoke consists of five sections: Kinder - St. Jerome, Grade 6 - St Catherine, Grade 9 - St. Agnes, Grade 11 - St Padre Pio, and Grade 12 - St. Teresa of Calcutta
Among the five sections, Grade 6–St Catherine contributed the most points. Meanwhile, in his closing remarks during the announcement of winners, Sports Club Adviser Mark Duran delivered a message
“Everyone showcases their skills in playing respective sports, but this is a competition, a rivalry where in the end, only one will win and be on top," the club adviser said in English.
BY | TRISTAN JAY FEDERICO, KATHERINE JOYCE PAEZAfter impressing the jury with their graceful-likedragon performance and beat-synchronizing choreography, Team Syrax emerged victorious in the team dance competition held on January 23 at HFA Gymnasium, beating four other participating teams.
Choreographed by eleventh-graders Alexander
Ian Malubag and Andrei Parungao, Team Syrax's dance performance used a remix of songs such as 2NE1's I Am the Best, Chris Brown's Run It, and Soulja Boy's Crank That.
Icy Villanueva, a dancer from the winning team was asked about how she prepared physically and mentally for the competition.
"Physically: warm up and practice; mentally: one night before the competition: pray,"
Villanueva expressed Led by tenth-graders
Cythie Jannah Dela Cruz and Mayrich Joy Domingo, Team Sunfyre bagged the runnerup placement
Fan favorite Team Vermithor finished second runner-up, Team Seasmoke third, and Team Caraxes fourth
Both the costume and the actual dance performance were considered in selecting the champion
Points gained from the dance tilt were added to the teams' overall intramural score
BY | HEZTIA REESE ALIPIO, CHELLAN DICIONTHE FIREBALL IGNITED for it was driven into embers, symbolizing the beginning of the most anticipated part of the school year the intramurals This year's event was inspired by the exquisitely titled series, House of the Dragon The sections were grouped into five teams, and each was given the ensign of the name of the dragon The teams thrived and channeled themselves into a dragon, yet that metamorphosis shocked the crowd for no one didn't see it coming
We had been caged for two years out of the fear of Covid-19 Fortunately, after years of waiting, we were set free We again swarmed back on our Alma Matter and the events it had were cherished and enjoyed by us Though, what happened was the contrary of ineffable as the Intramurals 2023 was a bittersweet
A touch of sweetness for conducting the most awaited event, not through phones where we barely see what's happening The bitterness jumped off too as what happened was a disaster There were wounds out of the nail scratch, crippled due to being pushed away by the opponents, heightened emotions, and such Like those dragons known for breathing fire, there were students who spewed words such as cuss, profanity, and cheating allegations that burned one's feelings Those who used to have mad love ended up having bad blood for each other Everyone unleashed their inner dragons in just one event
Intramurals 2023 made us represent dragons, but not to be one of them In the first place, we should not have adopted their behavior as the aftermath would be undesirable Although it is too late to regret, we can still heal the wounded the relationship between us and our mates
The intramurals have concluded While there may have been conflicts, we are also left with lessons After all, the Iron Throne belongs to sportsmanship It must be the one prevailing, leading us all to victory
Ang bawat kilos ay kalkulado Nang masabayan ang pag-inog ng globo;
Oras ang kalaban ko sa lahat; Sa batalyang ito, hindi ako pwedeng malingat Lalo't naghuhunos na ang kaniyang balat;
Babel could lose its lenience
For this pile of paper is taller; A house, it can't piece yet, But eventually, it shall soar
Once the torch lit the cave, and the enigma was riddled, I lived in disbelief.
All the years, I've been fooled, I've been burned; the leads, as it turned out, were just tricks. Vacuity won't go back to the tract where it dwelled. Hoax won't work again 'til senses halt; fables have blurred.
I hate the nasty echoes of cameras clicking, I'd rather hide behind screens, bleeding; Weep 'til all the blood runs out; Perish in peace, chase no clout.
If you were given the chance to travel back in time, where would you go?
Hear me out first
If I were granted the chance to travel back in time, I would probably go back to 2012. I was seven years old at that time and I didn't have to live with others' expectations I didn't have to start my day carrying too much pressure or end it thinking about academics All I had to worry about was what game would we play the next morning or what shirt should I wear on Christmas Day If only I could experience childhood once again, I would cherish it more than I did before.
If I could travel back in time, I would also go back to 2009. As both of my grandparents were still alive during that year, I would tell them everything that I couldn't tell them. All the questions that have been lingering in my head, all the I-missyou ' s and I-love-you's that have been stuck in my lips for years I would say it to them
However, those answers I gave you, they are only delusions and they are metaphors for my regrets in life.
REGRET. Regret is a six-letter word, yet there are millions of emotions, millions of stories that lie behind it But if you would ask me how I cope with it -- I do not just hallucinate over time travels, but I also listen to that Katy Perry song which says, "In another life, I would make you stay." Who knows, in another life, I could make that thing work?
Nevertheless, these ways of dealing with regrets -- to hallucinate over time travels or to jam to a Katy Perry song -- they won't do anything good to us They won't heal the pain of repentance within us. Or maybe, instead of regretting, why don't we embrace our flaws and learn from them? Our faults, our past, why don't we perceive them as major factors that created who we are in the present?
Perhaps I shouldn't have asked you that question in the first place and should have told you this instead: "The chances of traveling back in time or living another life aren't guaranteed, but we are already given a chance... the present is our chance."
The present is our chance to recover from the past and our chance to shape the future Let's appreciate what we have in the present. Let's turn our regrets into lessons. Let's not look back but look up
Just so you know, everything happens for a reason You missed those opportunities for a reason. You didn't take those risks for a reason Those experiences you have they made you braver and they created who you are today.
My dear readers, let us not create time machines or be delusional over another life or another universe because in fact, there is something worth doing, and that is to make every present moment count I am encouraging all of you to cherish what is in front of you... because after all, all we have is now.
Sa panulukang puno ng karimlan, nahanap nila ang tunay na mundo; Mundong kailanma'y 'di masusulyapan ng ibang tao;
Sa bawat pagtungtong ng aking mga paa sa labas ng silid, Mga huradong tainga't mata ang bubungad, mistulang nagmamasid;
Kayrami-raming napupuna, Bakit daw si ganito ay ganiyan at ako ay ganito lamang;
Pinili kong manahimik at mapag-isa Sa madilim na kwartong ako lang at ang aking sarili ang kasama;
I was there, holding my breath; I was there, fixing myself; You were there, watching me; You were there, enthusiastically.
You were there, when the glass broke; You were there, shrugging it off; Oh yah, what's new?
You think you won ' cause I'm broken too?
I will hold this broken glass; I will bleed, but I will fight! Be in pain or be in comfort; Look at me, I will survive.
Am I worthy to be loved?
Cause I can't even understand what love is; I can't even define it; Am I worthy?
Am I worthy to be loved?
Cause I am here, denying this uncontrollable feeling; Feeling of in love, they said. Am I?
Am I worthy to be loved?
If I can't even open my heart fully?
Cause I am afraid deeply; Am I worthy?
Am I still worthy? If I kept myself in a far distance; Distance from them, distance from you. Am I?
Am I still worthy?
If I told you this...
"Am I worthy for your love?"
Am I worthy?
