For over three decades, we’ve partnered with families, neighborhoods, businesses, and community groups all over Denton to achieve our vision of a clean and vibrant city. Using the Keep America Beautiful model of community engagement, Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) works directly with Dentonites to inspire positive change and provide residents the resources needed to leave a lasting mark on their home.
Volunteers are the roots of KDB. By donating their time and dedication, our volunteers give us the support needed to plant free trees, clean up unseemly litter, maintain local gardens, operate special events, and much more!
For more information on volunteering, visit page 70.

Funding for our projects is received from various revenue sources provided by local, state, and federal levels of government. Here’s a little bit of information regarding each funding source.
Parks and Recreation receives a specific amount of budget each fiscal year from General Fund allocations which mostly come from sales and property tax sources. Most of this funding mechanism is used for the operations which include maintenance of our parks system. In addition, every fiscal year a certain amount of capital funding is provided to various departments for infrastructure/asset improvements. This source helps fund existing maintenance/improvement projects within our parks system.
This source is made up by Denton visitors, hotel rentals, or short-term rental in the city. State law requires that HOT funds be used to support and enhance local tourism. The Parks and Recreation Department uses HOT funds to support public art, a usage that is clearly supported by HOT fund guidelines developed by the Texas State Comptroller.
These fees are charged to developers to account for the additional parks amenities that residents in new neighborhoods will need. The Parkland Dedication Ordinance supports the opportunity for land dedication and supports charging developers a fee to offset the cost of transforming new or existing parkland to support additional users. Often, this funding source is referred to as 915/916 due to the respective accounts where the money is deposited.
The City uses bond funds - essentially loans taken out against the value of the City’s continued ability to receive tax revenue and voted on by Denton residents to fund capital improvements that will have a long lifespan. In the Parks Department, bond funding often support land purchases, the construction of new recreation centers, and similar vertical construction programs. Sometimes, bond projects have a public art component attached to each specific construction project to enhance the aesthetic design associated with that project.
Staff is constantly assessing opportunities for various forms of funding to maximize resources and limit the burden of our city’s tax dollars by applying for various grant programs that are offered from local, state, and national organizations such as: Texas Parks and Wildlife, National Park Service, Texas Department of Transportation, North Central Texas Council of Governments, Texas Commission on the Arts, and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
This organization occasionally receives private donations from individuals and foundations that can be identified for specific park projects. Past projects include the North Lakes dog park, Eureka 2 playground, and the Denia softball complex.
The department receives funding from two separate trust funds. McKenna Trust Fund & the Parks Gas Well fund. The McKenna Trust Fund was established by George McKenna, and upon his death this bequest provided for the continued maintenance and improvements at McKenna Park. The Parks Gas Well fund includes revenues accruing to the City for natural resource extraction from park properties. It is important to note that this does not mean that there are active gas wells on Parks properties, but instead that the Parks and Recreation department is receiving royalties for resources that lie beneath park lands.
Sometimes the Parks and Recreation department receives funding from the federal government for specific purposes. This was the case when Parks received funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), to encourage economic recovery after COVID-19.

This is a long-term project to beautify medians throughout the city of Denton, especially along state highways. These projects are made possible by funding from the Texas Department of Transportation’s Green Ribbon Program, which funds landscaping improvement along state highways in order to provide beautification, traffic calming, and to improve air quality by reducing the spread of traffic-related soot and fine particles. Planting trees in highway medians also helps increase the City’s overall tree canopy coverage, helping to reduce the urban heat island effect. The latest Green Ribbon project will place trees, landscaping, and irrigation on medians along Fort Worth Drive / US377 between Roselawn Drive and Country Club Road. Estimated completion is March 2025.
Four additional traffic boxes in Downtown will be wrapped in the next couple of months. Art submissions have been requested. There are currently 17 other boxes in the Downtown area that feature art by Denton high school students, UNT and TWU students, Denton seniors, and local artist Jude Landry. The traffic box wrap program will soon expand outside of Downtown.
This project commenced in the summer of 2023, with Mesa Design hired as the design consultant that April. The goal of the project is to create a sensory-rich play space where children of all ages and abilities, including those with physical, mental, vision, and hearing disabilities, can play together. Parks and Recreation staff has received public input to shape the project through a public survey that launched in March 2024, and in a with a virtual public meeting on March 28. Parks Planning staff anticipate a summer 2026 start date for construction, barring any unforeseen delays.
Parks and Recreation Planning staff continues to work on the alignment study of the Hickory Creek Trail Master Plan. This plan was authorized to begin by the City Council on March 1, 2022, and the total trail length is anticipated to be approximately 12 to 16 miles. Upon completion, the trail will run from US 380 to Guyer High School. Staff is currently working with the design consultants to clarify alignments for the trail and will be conducting public meetings by end of year.
The City of Denton originally acquired this 6.5-acre property in far southeast Denton in 2016. In 2022, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) approved a Denton Parks and Recreation grant in the total amount requested of $621,563. Parks Planning staff anticipate starting construction by summer 2025.
In 2023, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department approved a grant of just under $600,000 to support improvements at Bowling Green Park. Plans for park improvements include additional trails and connectivity along Windsor Drive, the addition of a parking lot, habitat restoration, and an ADA accessible garden space. Parks and Recreation planning staff is currently finalizing construction documents and hope to start construction by the end of the year.
In May of 2022, Denton Parks and Recreation hired a design consultant to help develop the Briercliff Master Plan. A series of public engagement opportunities followed that determined the scope of the project would include a skate spot, picnic tables, shade, seating, new playground, and new splashpad. In February 2024, Parks and Recreation staff received news that the Briercliff redesign received $750,000 in grant funding support from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2025.
In 2022 Parks and Recreation applied for a grant through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Boating Access Grant Program. The grant program offers a generous 75 percent match of municipal funds for projects that renovate existing boat ramps or construct new ones that provide access to public waters for recreational boating. In March 2023, staff was notified that they were approved for the grant. The grant is separated into two stages, Planning & Construction. Staff is currently working on contracting with a design agency to initiate phase 1.
The City of Denton acquired the 5.19-acre Audra Oakes property in 2021 through a local partnership. In May of 2024, Parks and Recreation staff secured a design firm’s services to design a park space that will ultimately include items such as a loop trail, playground, pavilion, and other park amenities.
As part of a developer agreement, the City of Denton received parkland near Denia Park. The developer will construct a trail connecting Parvin Road to Roselawn Drive, which is currently under construction. Final plans for the trail were developed in October 2023 and work on the project continues. Staff anticipates the project to be completed by summer 2025.

In Late September a mural-sized adaptation of the art Jude Landry designed for the Design Downtown Denton initiative was installed at the Development Services Building. Landry’s design was previously adapted to a traffic box wrap outside Old City Hall (at the Elm/McKinney street intersection). This new mural is visible through a large window over the Development Services Building foyer that is illuminated at night.
The North Pointe Playground project involved replacing the old playground with brand-new play structures designed for children aged 2-5 and 5-12. The renovations also included the installation of swings, a shade structure, and engineered wood fiber play surfacing to enhance safety and play quality for visitors.
This project focused on upgrading and expanding the skate park. A ramp was replaced, and new features were added, including a concrete flatbar, wedge-towedge ramps, and a manual pad. These enhancements introduced professionalgrade skate elements, significantly improving the park’s functionality and value.
The Shady Oaks project involved planting trees and installing an irrigation system along the median between Woodrow Lane and Highway 288. These improvements added shade, greenery, and enhanced the overall aesthetics of the roadway, contributing to a more pleasant environment for the local community. Pictured.
At Denton Parks and Recreation, we believe in the power of play. We’re not just about swing sets and splash pads; we’re about building a stronger community, one child at a time. Our Recreational Care division understands the crucial role of enriching experiences in a child’s development, offering more than just childcare – we foster growth.
“Play is the highest form of research,” Albert Einstein famously said. And at Denton Parks and Recreation, we couldn’t agree more. Our diverse programs, from summer and spring break camps to holiday programs, Kids Day Out, Kids Rock, and our innovative Mobile Recreation program, all emphasize the importance of play in a child’s development.
We’re particularly proud of our Mobile Recreation program, a testament to our commitment to equity. By bringing activities directly to underserved neighborhoods, we ensure every child has access to enriching experiences. “Every child deserves the chance to play and connect with their community,” says Recreation Coordinator, Pypr Brueland. Park and Play events transform local parks into vibrant activity hubs, supervised by our dedicated staff. We’re also developing rental options for the Mobile Recreation Unit for birthday parties and other small events.
At Denton Parks and Recreation we’re investing in the future. We’re creating a community where children thrive, friendships blossom, and lasting memories are made. We’re nurturing the next generation of leaders, innovators, and community members. And that’s something we’re incredibly passionate about.
“Parks
and Recreation is a top provider of spaces that foster community connections.”

National Recreation and Park Association Gold Medal
Winning the gold medal is the ultimate award for a parks and recreation department. Denton has been awarded the gold medal three times; 1985, 1989, and 2003. The department was a finalist in 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002. Today, an organization must wait three years before reapplying for the gold medal. Only a handful of departments have won the award more than three times since its inception.
Winning the TRAPS Texas Gold Medal is the ultimate award in the State of Texas for a parks and recreation department. Denton has been awarded the gold medal two times; 1989 and 1994.
We are excited to announce that Denton Parks and Recreation has been awarded accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).
