Board Messages Editor’s Message This summer was one full of memories and smiles. For

meeting new people to reuniting with one’s already met. It

was full of fun but also some hard work. I can’t believe it’s already over! Schools here and we’re busier than ever.

With all our schoolwork and extracurricular activities, how can we find time to volunteer. I will do my best to find

volunteer opportunities that fit everyone’s schedule.

There are some volunteer opportunities after school at

SCRAP three days a week. Additionally, every Saturday

there are many events at various times. Remember you can email me anytime you like- if you have questions or if you want to sign up for an event.

Denton Back 2 School Drive On August 11, Serve Denton held a Back 2 School Drive at UNT Gateway Center. Shifts varied from 7:00AM to a bit after 4:00PM. Volunteers could sign up for one or multiple shifts. The shifts were on average 4-5 hours long.

These were the shift times: • 7:00AM to 12:00PM • 12:00PM to 4:00PM • And Clean up Volunteers could also choose what jobs they wanted to be assigned to. The jobs were: • Parking • Registration • Handing out Supplies • Preparing Supplies • Guarding/ Keeping Line Orderly and Going • Taking people’s passports before they came through to get their supplies

Another fellow DHS student was there: Ededi Adjagbodjou. She restocked supplies when we ran out. I took up families’s registration papers and handed them school supplies according to the grade of their kids.

Board Meeting

Denton High School’s Key Club Officers held our monthly board meeting on Sunday, August 12 at 1:30PM. It went on till 3:30PM. We met at the Teen Room in the South Branch Library.

Remember , the first general meeting will be September 4th @ 8:00AM and after school @ 4:10PM in the Lecture Hall.

Freshman Day

On Tuesday, August 14, there was a Key Club Booth at Denton High School’s Freshman Day. Our Key Club President, Caden Young and I manned the booth. Emily Young passed out information cards to the new freshmen. On the table, we had brochures, Denton High Mugs, our Key Club Scrapbook from last year, and additional information about Key Club. We also had Starbursts, Hersheys, Twix, Blow Pops, and Kit Kats with sticky notes on them.

Notes: • Blow pops: Service is cool, Service is sweet, (On Sour Apple) Service isn’t sour • Hershey: Choco-Lot of Service hours • Kit Kats: Take a break and join Key Club • Twix: Cara-Lot about Service/Key Club, Joining Key Club is the right choice A few people grabbed applications already and said they would come to our first meeting. Who knows we may get quite a few new members this year. We took the booth down at 9-9:30 (when the freshmen left to go to their first block).

RU Equine Therapy Volunteer Orientation .

On Saturday, August 18, I went to an equine therapy volunteer orientation.

Riding Unlimited’s Ranch was in Ponder, TX. The training started at 9:00AM. We watched a video made by PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) that told us about the rules and the responsibilities of each of the volunteer roles.

Divisional Council Meeting

On August 20, Division 8 held our Divisional Council Meeting. It was online through Zoom. It started at 6:00PM and ended around 6:30PM.

General Agenda: • September 8: The Division 8 Fall Rally will be at the Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville, TX. Bring $ for admission.

• The Youth Opportunities Fund is an opportunity for members to receive funding for service projects. Grants are awarded anywhere from $100 to $2,000. The ideas can be anything from collecting sleeping bags for homeless, school supplies, etc.

Durant High School used their grant to increase literacy in elementary schools. They buy books and read books to the students.

The application can be found at https://www.keyclub.org/youth-opportunitiesfund/ Applications must be submitted online by October 15 at 9:59 PM. Applications are reviewed by the Key Club board at the November meeting.

Grant applicants are emailed of outcomes the first week of January. A list of grant recipients is posted online the third week of January.To get the grant you have to make a cover letter. The project has to include detailed budget worksheets. There's an opportunity to create a video. The Youth Opportunity Fund gives Key Clubs an opportunity to expand our impact on our communities.

• DCON will be April 25-28, 2019. DCON is an opportunity to learn more about Key Club. It’s an opportunity to learn about the business side of Key Club through

SCRAP Fabric Pricing On Friday, August 24, volunteers helped SCRAP price fabric and rearranged their office. Fabric is one of the items that's most donated to SCRAP. Fabric Club is a volunteer opportunity that occurs every week on Mondays at 3-5PM. Volunteers price the fabric that’s donated to SCRAP based on length.

Kiwanis Hotter ‘n Hell Bike Rally

On August 25, Key Clubbers helped the Kiwanis Denton Breakfast Club promote the Turkey Roll. The Turkey Roll is a bike marathon in November.

Transportation was provided. We met up at DHS at 5:15 AM. We drove to the Kay Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls. We put Turkey Roll flyers under the windshield of cars in the parking lot and walked around handing flyers out. We left at 8:55AM.

SCRAP Haunted House Meetup On August 31, volunteers helped SCRAP brainstorm ideas for their Haunted House. Two other DHS Key Clubbers who went were Maya and Shea Beck. The Halloween House is going to be an interactive experience that teaches people about the 4 Rs through art. The 4 Rs are reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. The next meeting is September 14. I will have more information after the second meetup September 13. Email me (Kasandra Schroeder) if you're interested in helping out.

What is Key Club?

Key Club International is the world’s largest student-led service organization in the world. Denton High School is the local chapter of this club of 270,000 members from 38 countries.

Our board, made up of the club officers and committee chairs, seeks out or creates service projects to address needs in the community. Our large member base helps us fulfill these needs.

Remind

The local chapter of Key Club at Denton High School has a lot of history. Key Club International was founded in 1925 based out of California. It has been adopted to stand for Kiwanis Educating Youth.

Kiwanis is the sponsoring parent organization of Key Club. It’s like Key Club for grown-ups. Our club is sponsored by Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Club, made up of community leaders in Denton.
