October Messages Editor’s Message Happy fall, y’all! October was replete with treats with only a few tricks: a couple events were

rained on. In October, we introduced committees and welcomed a new officer, our photographer

Sydney Weiss. We had our first board meeting with the committee chairs and Sydney on Sunday,

October 28. We also introduced the opportunity to earn service hours by writing about a service project we attended. The first week of November is Key Club week, so be ready for a week of

fun and service. Remember to wear you Key Club shirt/ colors on Monday for our Club picture.

Our next meeting is November 6. I hope to see you there.

General Meeting On October 2, we had our first general meeting where we broke into committees.

After we went over the general meeting business, we went to the committees that we were most interested in. The Project and Creative Committees began coming up with ideas for the UNT homecoming float. The theme this year was Mean Green Game show.

The Social Committee began talking about our upcoming social that will be in South Lakes Park.

The fundraising committee talked about the UNICEF Fundraiser and about distributing the boxes.

Dog Days of Denton On October 6 was 25th Annual Dog Days of Denton. The event was held at the North Texas Fairgrounds. Volunteers begin setting up at 7 AM. The event officially started at 9 AM. Tasks for volunteers, Volunteers filled up kiddie pools with water for dogs to drink out of and set about three near each water source. In honor of the 25th anniversary, about 6 of the previous spokesdogs came. Jazz won the Spokesdog Competition this year.

Stream Clean On Saturday, October 6, close to 600 volunteers gathered to clean up waterways in and around Denton at the City’s annual event, Stream Clean. As a result, 2,976 pounds of trash and 944 pounds of recyclable materials were picked up, as well as dozens of large items, such as tires, furniture, and building materials. Key Club’s site was at the International Skate Park. 14 DHS Key Clubbers dedicated their Saturday morning to cleaning up this site. We had to be at our sites at 9AM and cleaned till 11AM.

SCRAP 4R’s Halloween House Meetup On Sunday, October 21 was a Haunted House Meetup from 2-4PM. The week after was an open studio, meaning we could come in to work on it anytime. We planned out where all the stations would be. We worked on the Reduce Station.

The goal on the reduce station is reducing fabric waste. We built a fabric mountain with brown and green fabric. We also made a few fabric jahwas to place on it.

Interclub/ Social On Sunday, October 21 was the Denton Key Club Interclub/Social where we met up with other key clubs in Denton. Two people from Kiwanis came, one person from UNT, a few people from Ryan, but the majority was from DHS. The social started at 6PM. Fun Contests: Who Could Make the Most Dog Toys from Old Shirts (Service Project) Who Could Defrost A T-shirt First Toilet Paper Mummy Contest (People were voted on different areas such as most fashion forward, most out of the box, etc.)

We also toasted marshmallows over the fire. The social ended around 8:40.

St Jude’s Bike Rally On Saturday, October 27, what is the Saint Jude‘s bicycle rally. We started setting up at 5 AM. The bicycle rally was in front of Byron Nelson high school. The bicycle route went through some scenic routes throughout Trophy Club, Westlake, Keller, far North Fort Worth and the Alliance Gateway area, with 20+ mile, 40+ mile and 50+ mile routes. The last racer finished at 2PM. All the volunteers got together to cheer him on.

Different tasks included: • Volunteer Check-in- talk about St. Jude Hero program • Registration- check in cyclist and distribute their participant shirt • Bib/T-shirt- chick in cyclist and distribute participant shirt • Start Line set-up crew- assist with setting up registration area, putting up sponsor banners, and prepping cafeteria with Dr. Pepper beverages • Staging Area/Start Line Hospitality (Water and Fruit Bar)Set up area, assist cyclist with filling water bottles with water and distributing fruit/protein bars • St. Jude Heroes Tent- talk about St. Jude Hero Program • Start/Finish Line Cheer-Cheer on the participants as they cross the start and then as they finish; also direct then to lunch area inside Byron Nelson High School • Finish Line set-up crew- Assist with setting up finish line, keeping cafeteria area clean • Pit Stop- Set up area- assist cyclist with filling water bottles with water and distributing fruit/ protein bars and cheer them on, clean up area once all cyclist are through

Key Club International is the world’s largest student-led service organization in the world. Denton High School is the local chapter of this club of 270,000 members from 38 countries.

Our board, made up of the club officers and committee chairs, seeks out or creates service projects to address needs in the community. Our large member base helps us fulfill these needs.

Remind

The local chapter of Key Club at Denton High School has a lot of history. Key Club International was founded in 1925 based out of California. It has been adopted to stand for Kiwanis Educating Youth.

Kiwanis is the sponsoring parent organization of Key Club. It’s like Key Club for grown-ups. Our club is sponsored by Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Club, made up of community leaders in Denton.
