Salvation Army Angel Tree First Friday Volunteering Starting November 2, The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree was put up at Golden Triangle Mall. The Angel Tree Program is a way for people to help out the less fortunate in the community. The program provides clothing, toys, etc. to those who regularly may not receive a gift for Christmas.

How the Angel Tree Works: • Families apply for Christmas assistance through the Social Services of the Salvation Army • During the application process, the clothing sizes and special needs of the children are determined and written on the application and is then transferred to paper angels along with the child’s first name, age and sex.

• Those paper angel tags are taken the nearby shopping malls, where they’re hung on a Christmas tree. Angel Trees are in 10 DFW area shopping malls and more than 250 churches, organizations and companies. Volunteers staff each location. Angel Tree will serve more than 45,000 children in the DFW Metroplex this year.

• An individual/ family will select an angel from the tree. Then, they take it to the volunteers to “adopt” the angel. They enter in their contact information and their angel(s). Then they can shop for their angel. They are encouraged to return with the gifts for their angel 10 days after the adoption or no later than November 7, the last day to bring back gifts as well as adopt.

Sign up for shifts to volunteer was available online on the Salvation Army website.

Divisional Council Meeting/Division Election Conference At the Divisional Council Meeting/ Division Election Conference (DCM/ DEC) our division, Division 8, elects next year’s lieutenant governor. The DCM/DEC was at the South Branch Library and was from 10:30-11:30AM. DHS Officers Who Attended: • Caden Young • Emily Young • Grace White • Kate Crawford • Mitchell Warnock • Nick Hines • I ran as DHS's candidate for lieutenant governor.

How It Works: Each Key Club may nominate a candidate and up to 4 delegates After the candidates have said their speeches, those delegates submit a ballot with their chosen candidate to the current lieutenant governor.

"I’m honored to have been elected the lieutenant governor for 2019. Key Club means so much to me. I can honestly say that volunteering is so much more than a hobby or something I do each

week. I don’t volunteer to just check off hours. I volunteer because there’s nothing else that I would

rather dedicate my time to doing. Volunteering is my passion. Serving others is the “key” to a better world. I’m so excited to see how the different clubs in TX-OK are serving. I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting or volunteer event. I hope you had a merry little Christmas and have a wonderful rest of the break."

Pictures w/ Santa On December 15, Health Services of North Texas had their Breakfast with Santa event.

Families could take a picture with Santa. Denton Health Services also provided families with a free breakfast. They offered breakfast burritos, fresh fruit, hot cocoa, and goodie bags. Smile Magic had a booth set up in the front. They gave pre-pasted toothbrushes and toothpaste to the families who came. There was a craft area in front for children to create snowflake ornaments with popsicle sticks and stick-on rhinestones.

DASF Santa Paws On Sunday, December 16, Denton Animal Support Foundation had their Santa Paws event. The event was at Eastside and was from 3-6 (2:30-6:30pm for volunteers). Pictures with Santa were $5 and all proceeds went to Denton Animal Support Foundation to subsidize costs of adoptions from the Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center. The funds helped cover the costs of vaccinations and the adoption fee which is paid for by DASF in December. Other ways to help were online adoptions and the giving tree where people could donate supplies.

Winter Social

On Wednesday, December 18 was our first Key Club Winter Social. It was held in Mr. London’s Room (Room 320) after school. It was from 4:20 to around 7PM. We watched the movie Elf and had several fun contests and games.

Gingerbread Man/ Woman Decorating Contest The winners were: • 3rd Place: Festive Gingerbread Woman and Her Christmas Tree - Made by Yisel Meza • 2nd Place: Sophisticated Gingerbread Woman in Orange - Made by Kathleen Thiele • 1st place: Festive Pink Santa - Made by Andrea Garcia

Winter Social Human Gift-wrapping Contest After teams covered a team member of their choosing in wrapping paper, all the contestants had to race down the hall to get a bow. The winner was Elena Summitt, rocking a festive snowman outfit and headband.

Mystery Canes Game The candy canes (around 12 different flavors) are mixed around in the different boxes. Each person tastes a candy cane from each box.

They then try to guess the specific flavor. It can’t be a general idea like chocolate. Each round the person who guesses the correct flavor got a ticket. The person with the most correct guesses got 3 tickets.

Cellophane When the game begins, try to unwrap the ball as fast as possible The person left of the ball rolls the dice until they get doubles When they roll doubles, they get possession and try to unwrap it, until the person on their left rolls doubles.

This continues till the entire ball has been unraveled. The last person to unwrap the ball is the winner. They got the candy in the center as well as 3 tickets.

Kiwanis Meeting and Courthouse Tour On December 19, Kiwanis had their meeting and courthouse tour. Unfortunately, due to a recent fire, many of the artifacts were out getting cleaned. The tour guide offered a Scavenger Hunt sheet for those who were interested. The tour guide showed us the court. She told us how it isn’t used for criminal trials but is used for civil court. Every Tuesday, meetings are held in it for civil court. People can go in and mention different problems they see in Denton, such as a hazardous hole in the road, and can petition to get it fixed. She also shared that the seats in the courthouse were donated from a high school auditorium. The seats have proved to be quite sturdy as they have lasted this long. Afterward, she gave us a tour of the top of the courthouse.

She showed us the mechanism of the clock and told us how it functioned. We then could choose to walk on the balcony. The view from the balcony is quite scenic. We could see the whole square and a bit beyond. Unfortunately, due to the fog, the view was not as vast as usual, but it was still, undoubtedly, resplendent.

DCON Reminder DCON may seem a long way away, but it is quickly approaching.

DCON will be from April 25-28 and will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Dallas.

Ways To Pay Off DCON: • Payment plan around $30 a month up until DCON, minus fundraising • Fundraise to pay off/part of DCON cost (Mug sales will contribute to your balance.)

- (Cost per person will be $120. )

Reasons Why You Should Go To DCON • It is such an enjoyable experience.

• Enduring friendships are made at DCON. • It is educational. There are several workshops and forums.

• It is enlightening. DCON shows you the big picture. You get a chance to meet with members from all over TX and OK. Every Key Club is unique, and that is demonstrated at DCON. • It is highly encouraged for officers and those considering running in March.

• Additionally, attending allows you to enter for scholarships and contests.

What is Key Club?

Key Club International is the world’s largest student-led service organization in the world. Denton High School is the local chapter of this club of 270,000 members from 38 countries.

Our board, made up of the club officers and committee chairs, seeks out or creates service projects to address needs in the community. Our large member base helps us fulfill these needs.

Remind

The local chapter of Key Club at Denton High School has a lot of history. Key Club International was founded in 1925 based out of California. It has been adopted to stand for Kiwanis Educating Youth.

Kiwanis is the sponsoring parent organization of Key Club. It’s like Key Club for grown-ups. Our club is sponsored by Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Club, made up of community leaders in Denton.
